Durbanville was founded in the early 19th century around a fresh water spring and was primarily a watering station for travellers between Cape Town and the interior. Durbanville was originally known as Pampoenkraal (from the Afrikaans words pampoen meaning pumpkin, and kraal meaning corral - an enclosure for livestock).During 1836 the inhabitants of Pampoenkraal petitioned the Governor of the Cape Colony, Sir Benjamin d’Urban, for permission to rename the village D’Urban in his honour. Permission was duly granted and the new name persisted until 1886 when it was renamed to Durbanville in order to avoid confusion with Durban. Meerendal, situated in Durbanville just 20 kilometres from Cape Town, is one of the oldest wine estates in South Africa. The unique location and terroir of Meerendal, in one of the coolest wine regions in the Western Cape close to the Atlantic Ocean, is ideal for the variety of noble cultivars that have been planted; Shiraz, Pinotage, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Meerendal is proud to treasure one of the oldest vineyards of Pinotage bush vines in South Africa that were planted in 1955 and produces a limited number of bottles from this Heritage Block. Meerendal has scooped up many top wine awards over the past five years and is exporting its quality wine to more than 12 countries. The estate first held a Cape Epic prologue in 2012 and has since strengthened it’s mountain biking offering with club memberships and have expanded it’s trails built by Bennet Nel and is owned by Meerendal Multisport. The Meerendal leg forms part of the Tygerberg Mountain Bike Club trail network. NATIONALMTBSERIES.COM

NATIONALMTBSERIES.COM
The Meerendal leg of the Ashburton Investments National MTB Series is owned by Advendurance. The trails on Meerendal Wine Estate have been built by Bennet Nel over the last four years and is owned by Meerendal Multisport. Two of arguably the favourite trails is the staircase to heaven and the Burry Stander tribute trail. The event makes use of some of the mountain biking trails on the neighbouring farms like Hillcrest, Contemanskloof and Hoogekraal which form part of the Tygerberg Mountain Bike Club trail network. Some of the trails are unique to the event and the properties have exclusively agreed access to some wonderful and private areas. Some of these include; Fair Cape, Rondekuil, Adderley Farm, Vrymansfontein, Capaia Wines, Haven Hills Wines farm amoung other private land. Special thanks to Meerendal Wine Estate and all of the landowners, without them the race will not be possible. The event supports local business and the local community. Ultra marathon Year Men Time

Half-marathon The half-marathon is a combination of Meerendal, Signal Gun, Hillcrest and Contermanskloof with some other land in between. The route follows the lower lying routes on Meerendal for approximately 8km before crossing the road just after the first waterpoint, with a slight drag towards the vineyards on rolling land. After entering a reserve riders will be greeted with game as they work their way towards the first climb of the day at around 10km called Signal Gun, this 5 kilometer long climb will enviably show who is here to race! After the climb the route enters some more wine lands and descends sharply into Hillcrest before hitting the next proper climb at 18km. This is where the men from the boys will be separated, at just under 6km and mostly single track, climbing slowly up to the tower and then down onto single track into Contermanskloof past the last waterpoint and climb back out and back to Meerendal for the finish. Marathon The marathon is a combination of Meerendal, Hoogekraal, Oatlands, Fair Cape, Adderly, Alexandria, Herholdt, Capaia Wines, Havana Hills wine estate and Vrymansfontein with some other land in between.

The route follows the lower lying routes on Meerendal for before climbing straight up to the top of stairway to heaven where the riders will descend into Vrymansfontein on some loose gravel, watch out! After entering the new river section riders will be greeted with meandering trails as they work their way towards the second climb of the day at around 30km mark, just after the first FTA zone. At just 3.4 kilometers long it will enviably show us who is here to race! After the climb the route enters some more wine lands over undulations before hitting the next proper climb at 50km just after a river crossing into Hoogekraal. This is where the men from the boys will be separated, and the start of five major climbs till the finish. After waterpoint three, the route turns back up to the start venue to Meerendal for the finish. Ultra marathon The ultra marathon will be a combination of the marathon & half marathon routes. If you demand 100% from your beer, choose
*based on Bavaria 0.0% Regular Malt
Bavaria 0.0% is brewed naturally, but with a unique, patented process creating no alcohol at all from the get go. It’s a genuine 0.0% alcohol malt drink and a flavour taste sensation! The claim ‘non-alcoholic’ or ‘alcohol free’ is often a misnomer. How can any beer with up to 0.5% alcohol content claim to be non-alcoholic? Most ‘alcohol-free’ beers are brewed as normal alcoholic beers, with the alcohol extracted at the last stage. Is it possible to remove all of the alcohol? No ways! These beers can have up to 0.5% alcohol by volume remaining when they reach the shelf. But by law it’s still ‘alcohol-free’? Who’s kidding who? ‘Alcohol-free’ should mean zero alcohol, nothing, nada, zip! Zero alcohol for Bavaria means Halaal too! Looking to reduce your waistline? Bavaria 0.0% uses only the purest mineral water, barley malt, wheat, and hops and has only 25Kcal, 6g carbohydrates (of which sugar 3.1g), 0.2g protein, and 0g fat per 100ml. It’s good for the figure and your confidence gets a kick! Bavaria 0.0% also has isotonic values and contains 68% less sugar and 41% less calories than the average soft drink or fruit juice. WOW!* We’ve sacrificed none of the flavour to bring you Bavaria 0.0% – you’ll love its malty, smooth, refreshing taste! And if you like your alcohol-free experience with a twist, Bavaria 0.0% is available in the following natural flavour taste sensations: Regular Malt, Raspberry, Lemon, Apple, Peach, Pomegranate and Pineapple. Enjoy!
