EVENT GUIDE – SNOW BIKE FESTIVAL 2016

ROUTE DETAILS Stage 1: GSTAAD-Rougemont-Saanen-Chalberhöni-Eggli-GSTAAD (29km and 933m climbing) On the first day, riders cross the so-called Röstigraben, which is the border between the French and the German speaking parts of Switzerland. “Rösti” as you may know, is a famous Swiss German dish that is not traditionally served in the French part, hence the word “Röstigraben = Rösti ditch”. A nation divided by a traditional dish. The route takes the riders from the main road in GSTAAD (the “Promenade”) through little roads and trails along the Saane river to Rougemont. In Rougemont the riders will reach the turning point and from there they will take a different route back to Saanen. The historical village of Saanen is known for its famous ancient chalets as well as the little airport, which is one of the coldest areas in the valley. Once the riders pass through Saanen the route will guide them to Chalberhöni which will then lead them up the Eggli. The climb up the Eggli consist of a distance of 7km and with an altitude of 590m. It tends to become harder and steeper towards the end, but the effort is well rewarded as the view into the Alps around GSTAAD is breathtaking. The downhill is on the sledge trail and it requires concentration and skill. When the rider crosses the finish line at the station of the Gondola “GSTAAD-Eggli”, they can be sure to feel the nice fatigue intermingled with happiness that comes after a great effort!

Stage 2: GSTAAD-Eggli-GSTAAD-Gsteig-GSTAAD (35 km and 1009 m climbing) On Stage 2 the riders will once again start on the Promenade in GSTAAD and from thereon head to the sledge tracks of the Eggli Ski Lift where they finished the previous stage. The riders will climb 475m over the 4.7km distance of the slope. This time there might not be as much time to enjoy the view while passing the spectator point as the climb heads into a challenging downhill on one of GSTAAD's famous ski slopes. From thereon it is a combination of uphill and downhill to Feutersoey and Gsteig followed by a little climb and then by a tricky downhill. The best spectator points on the route will definitely be on top of the Eggli and in Gsteig. Once the riders have conquered the downhill they will ride back to GSTAAD on a winter hiking trail. The finish line is once again at the station of the Gondola “GSTAAD-Eggli”.

EVENT GUIDE – SNOW BIKE FESTIVAL 2016

Rocky Mountain Eliminator Night Race: Wispile The riders will all gather under the lights at the bottom of the Wispile Ski Lift for the Rocky Mountain Eliminator Night Race. The slopes of the Wispile mountain, also known as the local mountain of GSTAAD, will be transformed into an oval of elimination and excitement which promise to provide excellent entertainment. Stage 3: GSTAAD-Lauenen-Lauenensee-Lauenen-GSTAAD (25km and 487m of climbing) The last and final stage brings a scenic ride to the Lauenensee. From the start in the Promenade of GSTAAD the route leads the riders through narrow roads, past big chalets and the Grand Hotel Park to Gmünte, where, for a while, the climb gets steep and hard. After the climb there is time to recover on a flat section where the riders can enjoy the spectacular view into the valley of Lauenen. Once the riders enter Lauenen a very steep challenging uphill awaits, it is not called the “wall of Lauenen” for nothing. Even though Lauenen is quite picturesque, it should however not be underestimated as it will be challenging to say the very least. All the more it is a really good spectator point where good photographs are guaranteed. Just after the village the climb to the Lauenensee (Lake Lauenen) begins. It is 3.5km long climb with an altitude of 150m. On the day of the race, nobody but the riders, supporters and spectators can access the area, a little paradise in nature. From there hiking trails, little roads and small single tracks brings the riders back to GSTAAD at the Eggli Ski Lift to the finish line.

EVENT GUIDE – SNOW BIKE FESTIVAL 2016

Swiss eBike-Motor for steep climbs From Marsmobile into a Mountianbike: The Obwaldner drive specialist maxon has developed a compact rear-wheel drive, which converts ordinary bicycles and Fat Bikes to powerful eBikes. Even the former downhill world champion is impressed. Many bike enthusiasts wished they had more power in the climbs, but even so, they would never want to swap their bike. The solution: the maxon BIKEDRIVE system kit, comprising a rear electric motor, a battery and a power grip. This allows you to instantly convert your bike into a powerful e-bike. BIKEDRIVE is more efficient and powerful than any of the motors on the market, which is not surprising, as the company has developed electric drives for Nasa’s Mars mission. “Now that I have tried it out, I am even excited about climbing!” says 52 year-old Ex-Downhill champion Albert Iten, who gave all his advice and experience to maxon’s engineers. Available in more than 20 shops in Switzerland The motor supports the cyclist till a speed of 25km/h, hence it is not needed to have a motorbike tag in Switzerland. A faster version will become available this year. The motor (with battery and powergrip) is available in more than 20 shops in Switzerland. We’re happy to announce, that the motor can be tested in the Race Village during the Snow Bike Festival in Gstaad. The technical specifications of the motor and battery and other interesting information, as well as customer’s feedback you can find on www.maxonbikedrive.com.
