Feature BUYING A CARAVAN

Top tips you need to know when buying a caravan at a show

B

uying a caravan can be both a thrilling and confusing journey. It’s exciting because you’re on the cusp of a lifetime of new adventures exploring our great country, meeting new people and creating amazing memories. Yet it can also be overwhelming because there are so many things to consider, and the market is literally brimming with t antalising options. Before you even think about opening your wallet, take some time to work out exactly what you need in a caravan. Chances are if you rush out and buy the first model you fall in love with, you’ll wake up in three months and realise you’ve paid for features you don’t use, the storage is inadequate or perhaps the layout just isn’t working for you. Some owners spend more than a year researching caravans on the market. But, as they say, knowledge is power, so with some careful planning, lots of research and a fair bit of tyre-kicking, we have no doubt you’ll find your perfect caravan. Here are out top tips for what to do before you go to a caravan show:

1

THE PASSENGER LIST

Consider how many people will use the van. Are you a family with young kids or a young couple planning on growing your brood? Perhaps you are a retired couple who might occasionally welcome guests on your ‘Big Lap’. You need to know how many to sleep, where everyone will put their stuff, and how you will use the internal and external spaces. There are many varied and wonderful layouts available for all manner of uses, but at a minimum make sure your dinette can seat everyone, there’s ample storage and everyone can see the TV when seated. Some beds are aligned along the length of the RV (north-south), others run across the width of the vehicle (east-west). This can influence storage options as well as access to and manoeuvrability within the van. Are there tall people in your crew? If so, pay close attention to the internal height, taking into account low points such as light fittings and air-conditioners, to be sure you can walk freely inside.

Above: RV features reflect our diverse needs, so take the time to figure out what matters to you.

YOUR TOURING TYPE

What kind of touring do you think you’d like to do? If you and your family are new to the caravanning lifestyle and you like the comforts of home, you may be perfectly happy touring the country hopping from one caravan park to the next and enjoying the facilities and comforts on offer. Thus, you may want a full-sized fridge to keep your tribe fed and air-conditioning to beat the heat. Conversely, it may also mean you have no use for a large space-taking internal bathroom, which requires about 1m in length and adds up to 400kg, or heavy-duty independent trailing arm suspension since you’ll be cruising the highways. If you are looking for something light to tow, consider a camper trailer or pop-top. They make a great start point for a life of caravanning. If you are want to get off the beaten track, you’ll need something off-road complete with larger water tanks, undercarriage protection for rougher terrain, more solar panels and a battery management system that can take you off-grid for an extended time.

3

THE EXTRA GOODIES

Make a list of what you desperately can’t live without, and put them in order of preference in case you need to cut from the bottom. This might include air-con and heating, a trick solar panel and power storage option, a four-burner stove instead of a two-burner, leather interiors, washing machine, an external slide-out barbecue or rear view cameras and a good navigation system like a Hema HX-1 Navigator, which provides a detailed road mapping system, including the ability to search for caravan parks.

WHAT WILL I GET FOR MY MONEY? The budget van

Up to $50,000 This is about the price you’ll pay for an entrylevel price range that’s a great introduction for newbies to the caravanning lifestyle or for those on a tight budget. You’ll most likely be buying a smaller, base model caravan or pop-top (a van with a retractable roof) and, although you’ll get the majority of mod cons such as a small kitchen, probably a combination bathroom and toilet and a double bed, there’ll be fewer bells and whistles.

Mid-range vans

$50,000 to $70,000 More money means more of everything – length, weight, interior space and features. You’re likely to find so-called family vans in this category – more room for everyone at a bigger dinette, lots of bathroom space, and better finishes throughout. Items that are optional on budget units will start to become standard such as aircon, TV and capacity for carrying water and gas.

The luxury Van

$70 to $100K+ From full off-road capability to all the tech you’d see in your own home, this category is where caravanning dreams come true. Think top-of-the-line suspension, kitchens with things like soft-closing cabinetry, a washing machine, luxury upholstery, solar power and even liquor cabinets. 18 TradeRVs.com.au

TIME TO TALK TOWING

Obviously if your budget is wide open and you can afford a new tow vehicle, the sky’s the limit. But if you already have a tow-tug and don’t want to upgrade then you’ll need to find a van to suit. Generally speaking (and assuming the vehicle and towbar ratings are acceptable) four-cylinder cars with 2L engines or more are generally suited for towing caravans around 1000kg to 1200kg. Some six-cylinder or V8 sedans and wagons can comfortably tow lighter single-axle caravans and campers up to 1600kg to 1700kg. The many medium to large 4WDs are generally suited for caravans up to 2500kg before they begin to feel the strain. There are fewer vehicles around for the heavyweights of around three tonnes and more – Ford F250s and LandCruisers come into their own here. When matching a car’s towing capacity, make sure it exceeds the caravan’s Aggregate Trailer Mass, which for tandem models is usually around 400kg more than the unladen (Tare) weight of the van. More powerful 4WD models can pull 3500kg, which obviously gives you more options. Check your vehicle’s manual to be sure. The weight of the van alone is one thing, but you need to add on everything you’ll carry too. The vehicle manufacturer

“If you are looking for something light to tow, consider a camper trailer or pop-top. They make a great start for a life of caravanning.” may also recommend using weight distribution hitches. This may influence your caravan choice because a prospective van with a heavy towball download may require one. And check the owner’s handbook for the rear axle load for your vehicle. If you have a heavy trailer and load up the cargo area of your vehicle with heavy items, you may overload the rear axle. This is illegal.

5

Above: There are a lot of vans at a show, so know your needs before you go.

KNOW YOUR BUDGET

This one’s a biggie. Not only do you need to know, and stick to a budget, but think about the other costs associated with owning your own caravan. As mentioned above, you may end up needing an entire tow vehicle and then there are those extra goodies to consider. Your budget should also take into consideration maintenance expenses. Also, the bigger the van and the more features it has, the heavier it is - and that costs more to tow. Also consider your travel costs and the fees associated with staying in a caravan park.

FIXING UP YOUR FINANCES

The best thing to do before you go to a caravan show is to have pre-approval on your finance. This provides you with piece of mind, and it means you’ll get on the road much faster. Specialist caravan finance brokers can arrange quick approval with a wide range of lenders, and usually cheaper rates than personal loans. Brokers such as Credit One offer no-obligation pre-approval, calculating your budget based on all your living expenses, so you can negotiate with a private seller, knowing that you have a pre-approved limit and you’re more likely to stick to your price range. Make sure you compare all available options on loan term, interest rate, pre approval and any early termination fees. Caravanspecific loans can offer flexible repayment structures

over two to seven years so you know upfront how long it will take to pay off.

7

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Read reviews in magazines such as Caravan World, check out as many layouts as you can online. Research the manufacturer, there are both imported and Australianmade models available across the country, and there’s much online about a manufacturers quality, design and any industry awards they may have won or accreditations they hold. Also, ask other users for their feedback. There are multitude caravan clubs all across Australia and a plethora of Facebook groups that are bottomless pits of great, practical advice from the people who actually use the vans.

MODERN-DAY

NOMAD The KEA Nomad 2+1 is an archetypal entrylevel RV pitched at young families and downsizing motorhoming retirees. WORDS PETER QUILTY PICS STUART GRANT

ot every retiree wants to go on the road permanently, some just want to hop from one destination to another and back home again and, in that respect, the aptlymonikered KEA Nomad 2+1 three-berth is ideal for those who like to roam from place-to-place. It’s also perfect for a couple with one child wanting to hit the road for two to three weeks, or grandparents wanting to take a grandchild away for a short holiday. I only had a couple of days to check out the 7m (23ft) Nomad during a two-day sojourn in Victoria’s Mitchell Shire, so I left the grandkids at home and flew solo. I enjoyed exploring the region’s military and railway heritage, but the archetypal entry-level motorhome Nomad impressed just as much. RV Sales Centre (based

Tested KEA NOMAD 2+1 Presented by The Wanderer

“The driver’s cabin has generous storage capacity with heaps of nooks and crannies for all your road-trip gear” in Braybrook, Vic) supplied the Nomad, and its sales and marketing manager Simon de la Mere told me he’s noticed many long-term motorhomers downsizing to the Nomad, as it’s easier to handle than a larger motorhome. Indeed, I found that to be exactly the case while traversing Seymour and its surrounds. The Nomad’s base vehicle, a 2.2L turbo-diesel Mercedes 313 LWB Sprinter, proved a super-smooth ride as I roamed the local tourist attractions including the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk, Seymour Railway Heritage Centre, through the quaint township of Tallarook, and also the Seymour Heritage Drive towards the Australian Light Horse Memorial Park and the Great Victorian Rail Trail. And with a seven-speed fully automatic gearbox, the agile Nomad has more than enough grunt, distributing maximum power of 95kW @ 3800rpm and maximum torque of 305Nm @ 1200-2400rpm. I thought the Nomad was a pleasure to drive with its ergonomic swivel seating, which is also afforded to the passenger, and the driver’s cabin has generous storage

Clockwise from main: Nimble enough to tour around town; visibility is excellent in the cabin; table rails increase benchtop space throughout; the u-shape lounge offers a comfortable work or play space during the day; the cabin converts to an extra berth if required.

boast a comprehensive camp kitchen, but courtesy of the Nomad’s external slide-out barbecue, I easily whipped up an impromptu meal of lamb chops with a side-dish of salad. The separate cooking plate ensured everything was cleaned and put away in a jiffy. It bodes well for easy catering on the road. Further to that, an external table with fold-down leg, to assist with meal preparation, is packed neatly away just inside the rear doors and, when needed, slides into position on the kerbside wall of the van. I also appreciated the safety aspect of a single 9kg gas cylinder being concealed in a driver’s side hatch. But I could just as easily have cooked up my feast in the Nomad’s compact and cleverly designed internal kitchen with its Dometic three-burner gas cooktop, sink with filtered water tap, 100L Waeco fridge-freezer and 700W Tiffany microwave. The galley also has excellent storage capacity, with user-friendly slide-out drawers, while a pantry cupboard is ideal for non-perishable items and I reckon the additional flip-up benchtop space is a real winner.

BRING A CROWD The Nomad’s dining area quickly converts into separate sleeping quarters to make up the extra berths. First, the rear lounge, with minimal rearranging of the seat cushions, becomes a cosy double bed (2000x1780mm). Meanwhile, a passenger seat with a table behind the driver’s cabin can be changed into a sideways-facing single fold-down stretcher-type bed (1850x800mm) that would comfortably accommodate a teenager or small adult. This seating and de-mountable table arrangement also allows you to catch up with any work commitments along the journey, which certainly came in handy for yours truly. The Nomad has a smart and spacious interior, with a bathroom with shower-toilet combo, washbasin and a 12V hatch and there’s also a deep compartment (robe) that’s made to measure for hanging clothes. In-house entertainment is provided by a satellite television, built-in DVD player and AM/FM radio/CD player.

capacity with heaps of nooks and crannies for all your roadtrip gear. My tour was only short, but hitting the bitumen and beyond for more than a few days won’t be a problem for the Nomad, given its battery (1x105Ah), solar (1x80W) and water levels (1x90L fresh; 1x110L grey). All of this is complemented by a roof-mounted Aircommand Sparrow reverse-cycle air-conditioner with a 2.4kW cooling capacity, and a gas hot water system. However, I found the Nomad’s external storage lacking somewhat.

HOME-COOKED FEAST I was stationed at the tranquil Big4 Seymour Holiday Park - along the picturesque Goulburn River - which does

THE BOTTOM LINE You could live or stay anywhere you want in the Nomad. It’s a quintessential home-away-from-home, albeit for relatively short stints. I really liked its attention to detail and innovation, resulting in an external cooking facility (rare in a motorhome), intelligently designed internal kitchen, and pragmatic bedding configuration. Obviously this KEA meets its brief, and will appeal to those who want to skip from campsite to campsite, and I reckon downsizing motorhoming retirees and a multitude of young couples (each with a little tacker in tow) will be queueing up to secure a quality RV at an enticing price.

BEYOND Knowing when to call in the professionals and when to do it yourself. WORDS MALCOLM STREET

DIY

I

think the popularity of doing DIY maintenance on our vans is declining. This is due, in part, to the fact that vans and vehicles have become more sophisticated in recent years. But despite technological advances, you can still successfully complete a DIY project if you know when to leave it to the professionals. In fact, just about anyone with basic mechanical/handyman skills can build, repair or maintain a caravan or camper trailer without falling foul of the law. The Federal Government’s Vehicle Standards Bulletins outline what you can and can’t do, and the one of major interest here is VSB 1 (small trailers under 4.5t). If you build a caravan without any gas appliances or 240V power supply, for instance, by installing diesel or methylated spirits-fired cookers, water and space heaters, then all you have to comply with to get your caravan/camper trailer registered are the relevant essentials in VSB 1. Motorhomes must meet a few more regulations, though, including the need for Second Stage Compliance on the original cab chassis.

Feature: DIY LIMITS GAS MATTERS That said, most modern RVs do have an LP gas system and, consequently, the entire gas system has to comply with Australian/New Zealand Standard 5601. That means any work done on the gas system needs to be performed or signed off by a licensed professional. I recently read on a forum about someone wanting to add an external LP gas outlet to their van for a barbecue. In many ways it’s a simple job but, legally, it has to be done by a licensed gas fitter.

12V SYSTEMS

“Manufacturers often run mains 240V cables through the walls and across the roof, so a mistake here can be costly”

12V systems in caravans are becoming increasingly complex but, strangely enough, there are no applicable standards to adhere to, so anyone who knows what they are doing can work on them. That’s the caveat here, though – it’s very important that you know what you’re doing. ELECTRICAL AND SOLAR Many 12V devices are quite complicated and, Like an LP gas system, most RVs also have a 240V consequently, quite expensive. And while a mains electrical system and you are required by mistake might hurt your bank balance and your DRILLING HOLES law to have that installed and maintained by a pride, it could also start a fire! Drilling holes in caravan walls and cabinetry to licensed electrician to the requirements of AS/ mount shelves or fittings is perfectly legal, but NZS 3000 and 3001 – both electrical standards. you must think about what’s behind or in the And there’s another, lesser-known standard, AS/ wall. Caravan manufacturers often run mains NZS 5033, which applies to the installation of 240V cables through the walls and across solar panel systems. the roof, so a mistake here can be costly! And All mains electrical work must be signed off by personally, I’d avoid drilling holes in the roof of a licensed person. your RV - it’s just one more place for water to leak through! Peter Mannfolk from AL-KO explains how social media, technology and buyers are impacting the Australian caravan industry WORDS PETER QUILTY

RATE OF CHANGE

W

e put some questions to the head of AL-KO, a market leader in the RV sector, which manufacturers high quality running gear, to get his thoughts on the latest caravanning innovations, issues and trends. Peter Mannfolk is the Australia/New Zealand managing director, like his father Sven before him, and has a long history in the business, having worked in marketing, mail-outs and on the factory floor during his years studying commercial law. TRADERVS: I can imagine you having a hectic work schedule; but what are your hobbies and passions? Peter Mannfolk (PM): My hobbies and passions

48 TradeRVs.com.au

are around spending time with my family. I’m a very proud father, I have two young children (two and six months) and I just like getting out into the outdoors with them, and making the most of time with family. TRADERVS: The caravan manufacturing industry is constantly evolving. What do you see as the seismic shifts since you’ve been involved? PM: The big shift is the pace of innovation. I think consumers, more than ever, are well informed and researched about what they want and what they want to see in caravans, and the manufacturers are in close contact with them, feeding that back to the suppliers. So we are really focused on local research and development of products to meet the demand in the market [from buyers].

Feature THE FACTORY FLOOR TRADERVS: So, in a way, you’ve adapted to those changes? PM: Absolutely, and as a market leading supplier we see our role to be interacting with the market; understanding what the market is telling us and responding quickly to bring products into the market to meet those needs. TRADERVS: Can you give us an example of how you’ve met those adaptations? PM: Looking back a couple of years, we saw the trend towards the trailing arm suspension system and we knew that we needed to be in that market. So, in late 2015, we launched our first trailing arm suspension, which was the Enduro Outback – a form of offroad rugged suspension for outback conditions – and, as we received feedback from the market, there was a demand for a lighter version, a sort of rough-road version of the suspension. So we then launched our Enduro Cross Country and more recently the final instalment in that series of suspensions – the Enduro Touring – which now brings the comfort and the ride of the independent suspension to the on-road caravan market.

Top left: Peter Mannfolk walks journalist Peter Quilty through the AL-KO factory in Dandenong South. Below: Mannfolk says the key to success is innovation.

“Buyers more and more see themselves as consumer advocates and are prepared to be on social media or be involved in providing feedback of their experiences”

CaravanWorld.com.au 49

TRADERVS: What do you see as the biggest influence on the caravan manufacturing industry? PM: Definitely the conversation between the end user and the manufacturers, particularly with social media; now there’s a dialogue. So the rate of change and innovation is speeding up and I think that’s good for the industry and the consumer because it means we, as a supplier, and the manufacturers are looking more and more for how to meet the needs of the end user, which helps grow the industry and which is, ultimately, good for everyone involved. TRADERVS: How have buyers changed over the years? PM: Buyers have become better informed than ever. They do their research, they come to caravan shows or they go to caravan dealers. They understand the market and the options that are available and are very prepared to talk to the manufacturers and seek out those options for themselves. And I also think buyers more and more see themselves as consumer advocates and are prepared to be on social media or be involved in providing feedback of their experiences and, ultimately, that’s a big shift, not just in the caravan industry but in all industries and sectors. TRADERVS: How are buyers influencing the caravan manufacturing sector? Are they more influential than ever? PM: One market segment that we see growing strongly is younger buyers entering the caravan industry, in particular, young families, and their needs are quite different than maybe the more traditional market. They tend to look for the lighter caravans because they have constraints around tow vehicles and tow vehicle capacities. And they’re also more engaged with technology, so they’re looking for connectivity and the ability to

50 TradeRVs.com.au

Feature THE FACTORY FLOOR

remain connected wherever they are, even while off-road adventuring throughout Australia. TRADERVS: Do you see a lot of positivity in the industry? Is it still as buoyant as ever? PM: The industry is changing and I think the key to success is innovation and being able to read market trends and meet consumer demands, which are changing and evolving quickly, and we and everyone in the industry need to be in front of that wave. TRADERVS: What do you see as the industry trends at the moment? What’s in vogue? PM: With the rise of social media we’re seeing people caravanning and motorhoming, and enjoying the great outdoors, wanting to be connected. And that means being connected on social media, blogging and publishing their journey, posting it on Facebook and Twitter and having the ability to stay in touch while they’re away. There’s also a demand for consumers to be able to use a mobile device to control their caravan so that if they’re coming back from the beach on a hot day they can already have the air-

conditioner switched on, or if they’re returning at night they can have the caravan’s external lights turned on in advance. And I think that’s a trend we’ll see more and more of as the technology develops. TRADERVS: If you could gaze into the proverbial crystal ball, what do you see ahead for the industry? Will the future largely be technology driven? PM: The future of the industry is technology driven and it’s driven by innovation, research and by development of new products to meet changing consumer demands. I think more and more we’ll see a focus on safety in caravanning and we’re working on safety products and safety innovations to continue to lead that field. I also believe the future for our product range is lighter and stronger. So in other words offering manufacturers flexibility by reducing the weight of the axle system or chassis system that they’re using to build their caravan. And giving them more payload, and also the ability to build lighter products that are attractive to young families, who tend to have smaller tow vehicles and for whom the ability to tow a lighter vehicle is very important.

Clockwise from top left: The AL-KO Enduro suspension comes in three variants; Sven Mannfolk with former Victorian Minister for Manufacturing, Exports and Trade, Richard Dalla-Riva; inspecting axles up close.

T

he greatest compliment you can pay any caravan manufacturer is to buy another van from them. So when a Sunshine Coast businessman came back to buy his second Zone RV, the top-of-the-line Z-21.6 Off-Road, it’s fair to say the team at Zone RV were nothing short of thrilled. Marketing Manager Denise Missen says of the owners, “the second time around they had more time to think about the additional upgrades and options they wished they had ordered on their original Z-20.6 Off-Road.” The upgrade is a further acknowledgement that the Coolum Beach manufacturer has tapped into a niche in the Australian caravan market, where customers are looking for automotive or marine-standard materials and manufacturing in caravans, and are prepared to pay for it. In this case, the end cost of $141,465 (May 2017) for the Z-21.6 is around $28,500 above the model’s base price, but those shopping in this market will know this is within the ‘ballpark’ for a tough off-roader with this level of features. The fact that Zone RV can already play in this lofty league after only a couple of years on the market is testament to the quality of its craftsmanship, and the word-of-mouth endorsement the company’s customers have given it to date. The Z-21.6 Off-Road we saw showed what this new kid on the block is capable of. From the outside it looks smart, with its smooth white walls with curved edgecapping, but is disarmingly conventional. That said, the the ‘beaked’ drawbar did catch my eye. It tapers towards the hitch for improved clearance, and is gusseted for extra strength.

The all-fibreglass composite body has impressively clean styling and is relatively unencumbered, devoid of the ‘bling’ of many of its rivals. Grey Raptor urethane coating is used liberally on the lower body sides, instead of checkerplate, to repel stones and the same two-pack heavy-duty coating has also been applied to the chassis, the A-frame, toolbox, stoneshield frame, wheel arch moulds, rear bumper and pole carrier – in fact, anywhere that could be vulnerable to stone or scrub damage. Zone RV co-founder Dave Biggar said the Raptor coating adds less weight than the equivalent amount of checkerplate, and can easily be touched up if scuffed or damaged. It certainly looks smart and complements the Zone RV’s exterior styling.

UNDER THE SKIN It’s not until you see how these caravans are put together that you begin to appreciate their significant difference to other caravans. The millimetre-perfect accuracy to which Zone RVs are being built is truly impressive. Each van begins with a CAD drafting, from which all key components are CNCcut – nothing too radical there – but it’s what happens next that makes the difference. In most caravan factories, the caravan moves along a production line, with each team adding more parts.

But in the case of a Zone RV, the chassis is anchored to a rigid metal jig – just like a chassis aligner in a top-quality automobile repair facility – to ensure all key dimensions are maintained during the construction phase. All supplies are then brought to this bench on movable trolleys and the caravan is only unbolted when the major exterior and interior components have been fitted. This avoids any potential movement of the structure, ensuring that the finished product remains true to its original CAD dimensions. Zone RV boasts about its ‘timberless’ construction with good reason. In most caravans, a plywood floor is glued to the steel chassis, the vinyl flooring is then applied and the walls are then framed and screwed or bolted to this base. With the Zone RV, the floor is 32mm thick infused fibreglass, reducing the number of chassis crossmembers required. Instead of timber, the furniture is framed from aluminium extrusions and when it is all in place, the walls and roof are bonded directly to both the floor and cabinets, ensuring that the result is a very rigid, monocoque structure. You might ask why this is important, given that more conventional caravans from other quality Australian manufacturers seem to do pretty well, but the difference can be appreciated on the road.

A basic Z-21.6 tips the scales at a Tare weight of around 2535kg and can offer a payload of close to a tonne or more, if required. Because of its many upgrades, the Z-21.6 we reviewed was 285kg heavier at 2820kg Tare, but still boasted a good carrying capacity of 680kg. What this means on extreme rough road conditions is that you can tow it all behind a large, locally-available 4WD like a LandCruiser or Land Rover, providing a very rigid platform for the tandem trailing arm suspension to deal with the undulations. In swapping to the longer Z-21.6, our test van’s owners took the opportunity to upgrades from already rugged Cruisemaster ATX coil spring to Vehicle Components’ premium XT Air Bag Suspension Stage 4, which also comes with twin telescopic shocks per wheel, and incorporates automatic level control to make it easier to set up on a sloping site.

Clockwise from below: Ample drawers keep you organised at camp; hinged overhead kitchen cupboards conceal the entertainment system; a light and bright interior; Dometic security door.

“It looks smart, with its smooth white walls with curved edge-capping, but it’s also disarmingly conventional” DETAILS, DETAILS While looking underneath, I took time to appreciate other Zone RV details, like the efficient configuration of cross-members, the steel aluminium-shielded water tanks, and the way all vulnerable piping is tucked away high and well out of harm’s way from snagging or stone strikes. It’s also interesting to see the way Zone RV deals with the mandatory ventilation for caravans fitted with internal gas appliances. Instead of ‘breathing’ through the lower section of its solid Dometic security door, there are twin circular extractors to the rear of the water tanks that are designed to minimise dust intrusion. Other details, like the way the enclosure for the large 218L Dometic compressor fridge is fully dust-sealed from the interior of the van, using a large chimney behind it ‘to breathe’ in hot weather, shows an impressive eye for detail.

SUSTAIN YOURSELF Inside, Zone RV has taken full advantage of the Z-21.6’s length to make it roomy and workable for long-term travellers. Unlike most caravan manufacturers, which use the term ‘off-road’ to refer principally to the caravan’s strength, damage proofing and ground clearance, Zone RV also uses this terminology to encompass sustainability in remote areas.

62 TradeRVs.com.au

Upgrades, including a third 120Ah AGM battery, a fourth 100W roof-mounted solar panel and a 2000W Enerdrive inverter, ensure that the owners of this Z-21.6 will be able spend quality time off the grid; although, if it was mine, I would prefer the extra solar panel to be portable rather than roof-mounted, allowing it to follow the sun if camped in the shade. An extra 100L of fresh water storage takes the total volume of the review van to 300L and, combined with 100L of grey water storage, should be plenty for stays of a week or more. The optional Shurflo 12V water isolation system is able to deliver fresh drinking water even if you fill your tanks from a river. Good storage space is another thing you need in a true off-road van, as the nearest supplies may be weeks away. The large A-frame storage box is large enough to hold a generator on one side, which can be accessed through a side door, plus room for hoses and power cables and a single jerry can

holder on the other side. The fuel tank for the optional Eberspacher diesel space heater, twin 9kg gas cylinders and the optional Thule bike rack are protected on the 500mm extended A-frame by a truck-mesh stone screen with large mud flaps that are hanging beneath. A Bushman RV Explorer stainless steel barbecue slides out of the front left-side locker to supplement the inside kitchen, while the corresponding locker on the other side of the body provides more storage room. Unlike some caravans, the Zone RV’s upper inside walls aren’t lined with the cupboards that you find in most other caravans and this, combined with its large windows front and sides, gives the Z-21.6 an open, airy feel inside. Zone RV prefers drawers to cupboards because they locate things better in off-road travel and thanks to optional four-drawer cabinet under the foot of the bed, a similar optional chest of drawers in the ensuite and a huge triple-

decker pantry beside the 218L Waeco compressor fridge, there is no shortage of space for the supplies or clothing that you might need on an extended remote area trip. The furniture is also smart and modern with PVC coating over aluminium making it light, yet attractive. Quality hardware is used on the cabinet drawers, while concealed catches are fitted on the upper cupboards. Another feature specified by this van’s owners with their upgrade was an infill cushion for the U-shaped dinette to convert it quickly into an additional, large single bed.

THE BOTTOM LINE It was interesting to review a caravan that has been built specifically by its owners to further improve on what is already a quality off-roader, and we applaud their choice and good taste. Quite simply, Zone RV with its option list gives anyone looking at the serious end of the off-road caravan market another ‘must’ to add to their shopping list.

IN FOCUS:

STOP LEAK!

A

lthough usually reliable, caravan hot water systems (HWS) are still susceptible to issues, with the most common being heater anode failure or a leak in the tank. This HWS had sprung a leak so it was time to pull it out and check out what was going on. Caravan HWS run on either 240V mains power or gas. Now, many DIYers won’t have the necessary qualifications to certify any 240V or gas fitting repairs, but you can save some costs by doing the bulk of the work yourself.

FINDING ROOM TO MOVE Replacing a tank can take little more than an hour or many, many hours, depending on how the HWS was built into the van. Caravans are usually built from the inside out, meaning items such as a HWS can be hard to access.

All you need to know about replacing a hot water system tank. WORDS PHIL LORD

In this case, the HWS was built into a lower cabinet in the corner of the bathroom. The toilet was removed, improving access, but depending on your situation, cutting out the cabinet shelf may be the only option. The HWS air inlet/exhaust cover (necessary for gas operation) and securing plate were removed from the van’s exterior. Back inside, the screws securing the HWS to the floor were removed and the water inlet/outlet pipe connections were disconnected. You need to use a sliding collar to ensure a positive connection, so they can be a bit tricky to disconnect. Once removed, the HWS was free to slide out from the enclosure providing access to disconnect the 12V electrical connections (12V is for gas ignition only) and unscrew the gas inlet pipe. In this case, 240V was disconnected by pulling out the plug from the 240V mains socket in

the adjacent cabinet wall. The HWS could then be removed from the van to be further dismantled on the work bench. The printed circuit board enclosure was dismantled and removed to allow the cardboard enclosure to be taken off. The exhaust outlet/air inlet assembly was removed, as was the heating element. You can see the water stains that were left from the leaking tank on image 13. Next the tank’s retaining collar was removed, followed by the tank itself. Installation is the reverse procedure, but certified fitters must be involved with the gas connection and, in cases where 240V is hardwired, the electrical connection. With thanks to Barnes Caravans, 121 Hume Highway, Lansvale NSW 2166, (02) 9728 6366, for their assistance with this story. CaravanWorld.com.au 69

Tested PATRIOT X2 Presented by Camper

Left to right: A removeable tent for all your adventures; pantry items at your fingertips.

W

If camping is the antidote to the mayhem of modern life, the relaxed Patriot X2 lets the medicine go down easy. WORDS EMMA RYAN PICS JACK MURPHY

hat is it about camping we humans seem to love so much? We willingly leave the comfort of four walls behind to immerse ourselves in the wild unknown of the great outdoors. We seek a simpler existence, to liberate ourselves from the hustle and bustle of our industrialised world – if only for a few nights. If the nine-to-five, mortgage repayments and school drop-offs are life’s inhalation, camping has long been its exhalation. Surely a camper trailer, then, should mirror this ethos of doing less. The Patriot X2, with its unobtrusive dimensions, easy going attitude and affordable price point, does just that. Add to the mix a highly customisable format that enables you to create a camper that suits your lifestyle, and you might just have found your perfect partner in weekend tomfoolery. The X2 has evolved from Patriot’s original and best selling camper trailer, the X1. But rather than getting bigger and bolder like most things that evolve, the X2 has gone the other way and become smaller and more discreet. Reverse evolution, if you will, but the move is far from backward. Despite the staggering success of its flagship X1, the team at Patriot heeded the call of its customers for an entry level product, a camper with the same go everywhere, cop anything attitude of its big brother but with less bells and whistles. If the X1 is dux of the school and captain of the cricket team, the X2 is the quieter younger brother who wins people over with his charm and good looks. But the family resemblance is undeniable. Both campers share the same concept: rooftop tent accommodation riding above a functional, solid off-road trailer that houses the things you need for fuss-free camping. The result in both cases is a compact, easy to use camper that celebrates outdoor living. The difference with the X2 is its customisable format, in which you only pay for the things you really need.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE The Rhino-Rack rooftop accessories platform plays host to your choice of tent, be it a sleek James Baroud pop-up hard shell tent with a 10 second setup time, a more traditional folding TJM roof topper or a family-friendly integrated tent complete with change room/kiddies’ quarters. Your call. Best of all the tent can be removed altogether for daytrips; strap on the boards to play in the surf or snow or bring the camper along to help cater family picnics or to service worksites. If you’re heading away on a camping trip with mates instead of your partner you can use the platform to strap down swags or tents. Versatility is the name of the game here. The X2 has a rear slide-out kitchen drawer with space for a 50L fridge (BYO fridge or tick the options box to have a Waeco fitted), a pantry cabinet, cutlery drawer and space-saving silicone pop-out sink fed by a 70L water tank and pressurised water pump. This outdoor living and entertaining area can be protected from the elements by an optional Foxwing awning, which lifts above head height on gas struts and wraps around the side and rear of the camper. Dirty boots, soiled recovery gear, wetsuits, towels and more can be shoved into the wet storage compartments at the rear corners of the camper. THE WRAP The X2 is a rock solid off-road tourer with a no bull approach to camping. It will strike a chord with young (and young at heart) adventurers who like to cook with grass beneath their feet and eat beside the campfire with mates. Those who see camping as an opportunity to reconnect with nature and a more simple way of living, and prefer not to be weighed down by heavy machinery that limits where they can go and what they can do. True to its family lineage, the X2 is a beautifully finished, superbly engineered camper trailer conceived by an industry-leading brand who dare to do things just a little bit differently. Anyone who has ever expressed admiration for Patriot’s original X1 camper but couldn’t quite cough up the money should take a look at the X2. At $24,990 for the base platform, it’s an affordable and reliable camper that can be tailored to suit your needs and your budget.
