India

Overview

India

Taj Mahal, Agra

Bamboozling. There’s simply no other word that convincingly captures the enigma that is India. With its in-your-face diversity, from snow-dusted mountains to sun-washed beaches, tranquil temples to feisty festivals, lantern-lit villages to software-supremo cities, it’s hardly surprising that this country has been dubbed the world’s most multidimensional. India promises to jostle your entire being, and no matter where you go or what you do, it’s a place you’ll never forget.

VARANASI

DELHI

A strip of land between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats, its perfect climate flirts unabashedly with the fertile soil, and everything glows. An easy-going and successful socialist state, Kerala has a liberal hospitality that stands out as its most laudable achievement.

India’s capital is sprinkled with glittering gems: captivating ancient monuments, magnificent museums, a vivacious performing-arts scene and some of the subcontinent’s yummiest places to eat. A vibrant melting pot, you’ll hear a jumble of vernaculars spoken in Delhi, the most common being Hindi, English, Punjabi and Urdu. In terms of its layout, Delhi encapsulates two very different worlds, the ‘old’ and the ‘new’, each presenting deliciously different experiences. Visitors can easily dip into both, spending half the day immersing themselves in history at the dramatic Red Fort, Jama Masjid and medieval-flavoured bazaars of Old Delhi, and the other half reviving themselves over frothy cappuccinos or frosty cocktails at one of New Delhi’s swanky cafés and bars.

RAJASTHAN From the cackle of its colour-charged cities to the luminous splendour of its sun-kissed desert, Rajasthan is romantic India wrapped in gaudy royal robes. Here the fearsome Rajput warrior clans ruled with gilt-edged swords, plundered wealth and blood-thick chivalrous codes. A vast and wonder-laced state with treasures more sublime than those of fable, the Land of the Kings paints a bold image. Compiling a must-see list in Rajasthan can cripple the fussy traveller: Meherangarh looming over bright blue Jodhpur, the giant gold sandcastle at Jaisalmer, the palaces and pageantry of Udaipur, Pushkar’s reverent yet carnival charm, the storybook whimsy of Bundi and the havelis (traditional, ornately decorated residences) sprinkled through Shekhawati. Like a microcosm of Mother India, there’s also abundant wildlife and warm people, glitz and camels, soulful music, glittering saris, tottering turbans and a surprisingly rich cuisine.

AGRA Agra’s magnificent white marble Taj Mahal stands like a bulbous beacon, drawing tourists like moths to a wondrous flame. Despite the hype, it’s every bit as good as you’ve heard. The legacy of the Mughal empire has left a magnificent fort and a sprinkling of fascinating tombs and mausoleums, while the Yamuna River provides a suitably sacred backdrop. Agra’s attractions are much more than can be seen in a day, and if you have the time you can enjoy several days’ sightseeing with side trips to Fatehpur Sikri and Mathura. 6

Few places in India are as colourful, charismatic or spiritual as the bathing ghats lining the Ganges in Varanasi. The city of Shiva is one of the holiest places in India, where Hindu pilgrims come to wash away a lifetime of sins in the Ganges or to cremate their loved ones. Varanasi has always been an auspicious place to die, since expiring here offers moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death). The city is the beating heart of the Hindu universe, and the Ganges is viewed as a … river of salvation.

KERALA

Resting on low hills in Southern Kerala is the capital Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), used as a gateway to nearby resorts by many but boasting some of its very own attractions and dreadlocked faithfuls. The emerald jewel in South India’s crown are the backwaters that meander throughout Kerala. Here, spindly networks of rivers, canals and lagoons nourish a seemingly infinite number of rice paddies and coconut groves, while sleek houseboats cruise the water highways from one village to another. Along the coast, slices of perfect, sandy beach beckon the sunworshipping crowd, and far inland the mountainous Ghats are covered in vast plantations of spices and tea.

OUR TOP PICKS FOR INDIA 1 Darjeeling Wrap your chilly hands around a hot cuppa in this quintessential Indian hill station. 2 Varanasi Take a soul-soothing dawn boat ride along the ghat-lined Ganges River in this sacred city. 3 Khajuraho Blush at the erotic sculptures embellishing these exquisitely carved temples, a Kama Sutra in stone. 4 Agra Imbibe the legendary beauty of the milky white Taj Mahal, the ultimate monument to love.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL India has vast climate changes from north to south. The more comfortable time to visit most of India is during the cooler months from October to March. The summer months between April and June are hot, with temperatures in central India reaching 45ºC. This is the time to visit the hill stations such as Shimla, Darjeeling and Ooty for a cool retreat. The monsoon commences in the south from June and moves northwards, finishing around September, when more humid weather is experienced. AVERAGE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE (°C) – based on Delhi JAN

Sights not to be missed... VARANASI – MORNING BOAT RIDE ON THE GANGES Sunrise on the river Ganges is indeed magical and has a mystical quality about it. The early morning boat ride along the banks of the Ganges has become a modern-age ritual. Every morning at dawn hundreds of worshippers can be seen bathing in the sacred waters.

EROTIC TEMPLES OF KHAJURAHO If you want proof that the Kama Sutra originated in India, Khajuraho in Central India is the place to see. Erotica abounds here with over 20 temples devoted to sexuality. Erotic or not, the level of detail is quite magnificent and depicts scenes of mythical lions, gods, and erotic couples. Brace yourself…

BACKWATERS OF KERALA Kerala is a land with a huge necklace of canals, lagoons, lakes and rivers. There is no other place in India as exotic and spellbinding as Kerala and the best way to experience it is by a kettuvallam cruise. Sailing down the rivers of Kerala watching the world slip past is great way to unwind and relax.

THE TAJ MAHAL – AGRA Probably the most famous building in the world and everyone has probably seen a picture of it, but nothing really compares like the real thing – the Taj Mahal looks a lot better in reality than in any image. Even those who come to see the Taj with high expectations never fail to be overwhelmed by its beauty.

AMBER FORT – JAIPUR This huge fort with rugged exteriors and stunning interiors is a must see. Built in 1592, it has wonderful palaces, courtyards, and gardens that reflect the royal wealth and glory associated with the Mughals. Ride an elephant along the ramparts to reach this magnificent fort.

RANTHAMBORE NATIONAL PARK Considered to be the best game reserve in India, Ranthambore National Park is a fascinating blend of history and nature. This national park is very popular due to its proximity to Delhi and the fact that tigers are relatively easy to spot here. Animal sightings are best during the months of March and April. adventureworld.co.nz

CountryOverview Nepal Tour Accommodation Type

Nepal Draped along the greatest heights of the Himalayas, Nepal is where the ice-cold of the mountains meets the steamy heat of the Indian plains. It's a land of yaks and yetis, stupas and Sherpas and some of the best trekking on earth. The Himalayas' most sophisticated urban cultures took shape here, in the three great mini-kingdoms of the Kathmandu Valley – Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur – home to a world-class artistic and architectural heritage. Behind the Vishnu shrine of Ichangu Narayan, northwest of Swayambhunath in the Kathmandu Valley, rises the 'Abode of Snows' (Himalaya in Sanskrit), a magnet for trekkers and mountaineers the world over. Only in Nepal can you trek for weeks without the need even for a tent. No longer does your name have to be Tenzing or Hillary to set foot in Everest Base Camp. Out of the mountains, get your adrenaline kick from world-class white-water rafting, kayaking and mountain biking, or from the spine-tingling sight of your first tiger or rhino in Chitwan National Park.

Nepal is not just a bungee-jumping, apple-pie eating Shangri-la. It's also one of the poorest countries on earth. However many visitors, drawn to Nepal by the promise of adventure, leave equally enchanted by the friendliness and openness of the Nepali people. From the natural rhythm you ease into on a trek to the rhythm of a tabla drum at one of Kathmandu’s palace restaurants, Nepal is an amazingly diverse country that offers something for everyone. One journey through this land is rarely enough. The first thing many people do after a visit is start planning the next one.

CHINA

Annapurna

TREKKING IN NEPAL Anyone who is moderately fit and has a sense of adventure will enjoy our Kathmandu Valley and Annapurna foothills trek. Though relatively easy-going, there are physically demanding steep uphill and downhill sections. Some preparation is recommended. Trekking is private with your own guide and porter. Accommodation in tea houses is basic but still comfortable.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL Nepal has a typical monsoonal two-season year. The dry season is from October to May and the wet season is from June to September. Country Overview Bhutan Tour Accommodation Type

Bhutan

Taktsang monastery

Bhutan, the Land of the Thunder Dragon, is no ordinary place. This is a country where buying cigarettes is illegal, where the rice is red and where chilies aren’t just a seasoning but the entire dish. It’s also a deeply Buddhist land, where men wear a tunic to work, and where Gross National Happiness is deemed more important than Gross National Product. Tourism in Bhutan is also unique. First off, there are the early Buddhist sites in the cultural heartland of Bumthang Dzongkhag and the undisturbed traditional Tibetan-style culture that sets Bhutan aside as the last remaining great Himalayan kingdom. Then there are the textiles, outrageous trekking as well as the stunning flora and fauna of Phobjika Valley. Trashigang is an interesting town and also useful for launching into a trip in Eastern Bhutan. Thimphu, the capital, has a youthful exuberance that constantly challenges the country’s conservatism and proud tradition. The ever-present juxtaposition of old and new is just one of its appealing qualities. Thimphu is also the world’s only capital without traffic lights. A set was installed, but the residents complained that it was impersonal, and so gesticulating, white-gloved police continue to direct the ever-increasing traffic. As well as being a classic Bhutanese anachronism, it may well be the city’s most photographed spectacle.

CHINA BHUTAN

It is also a country of surprises. This is not just a nation of saintly, otherworldly hermits. Bhutan is straddling the ancient and modern world and these days you’ll find monks transcribing ancient Buddhist texts into computers as traditionally dressed noblemen chat on their mobile phones.

Punakha THIMPHU

Paro

If you do visit Bhutan, you will become one of the few who have experienced the charm and magic of one of the world’s most enigmatic countries – the ‘last Shangri La’ – and you’ll be playing your part in this medieval kingdom’s efforts to join the modern world, while steadfastly maintaining its distinct and amazing cultural identity. Most of all, Bhutan offers an opportunity to glimpse another way of living, an alternative vision of what is truly important in life.

Country Sri Lanka Tour Overview Accommodation Type

Sri Lanka When the noted writer Sir Arthur C Clarke made his home in Sri Lanka in 1956, he claimed the island jewel of the Indian Ocean was the best place in the world from which to view the universe. The author of 2001: A Space Odyssey passed away in 2008, but no doubt the futurist would have logged on to Google Earth to gaze back at his island home from an online universe. And concealed in the sky-high imagery of this teardrop-shaped nation, he would have recognised an amazing diversity for somewhere so compact.

Trincomalee Sigiriya

Fringing the coasts is an array of gently arcing golden-sand beaches, now making a comeback after the devastation wreaked by the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. Zoom closer to spy the giant tanks (artificial reservoirs) built by the first Sinhalese rulers around the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Pollonaruwa. In the Hill Country, a layer of cotton wool clouds obscures the view, mirroring the misty mornings travellers often experience in this area of verdant tea plantations.

SRI LANKA Kandy

Irrespective of their cultural background, Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim locals will welcome you with pride. Pride in their criminally underrated cuisine, pride in their national parks and wildlife, and – especially – pride in their national cricket team. The sport that frequently stops the nation is always worthy of discussion. How will the boys do in the upcoming series against New Zealand? Faced with funding a war and weathering a global financial crisis, Sri Lanka’s proud population has been doing it tough for a few years. But equipped with a stellar combination of scenery, culture and history, a growing focus on sustainable tourism and (hopefully) a more settled society, Sri Lanka is firmly back on the radar for curious travellers seeking unique experiences.

OUR TOP PICKS FOR SRI LANKA 1 Ancient Cities Visit Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya – the magnificent relics of Sri Lanka's golden age 2 Yala National Park Take a wildlife safari – it's your best chance to spot the elusive leopard 3 Kandy History and culture, delightful old shops, lush green hills and a touch of urban buzz – all this and the country's most spectacular annual festival 4 Galle Join the locals in their sunset stroll around the old ramparts of this charming historic town 5 Southern Beaches From popular Unawatuna to sleepy Mirissa, you're sure to find a long stretch of white sand to suit you 34

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL Climatically speaking, the driest (and best) seasons are from December to March for the west coast, the south coast and the Hill Country, and from April to September for the ancient cities region and the east coast. December through March are also the months when most foreign tourists visit, the majority of them escaping the European winter. Travelling between May and November has its advantages as the beaches and attractions are less crowded and many hotels reduce their prices.

Country The Maldives Tour Accommodation Overview Type

The Maldives A geological eccentricity nestled in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives are a series of ancient coral reefs that grew up around the sides of towering prehistoric volcanoes. These immense structures have long since sunk into the ocean, leaving behind coral islands of incredible natural beauty, now themselves being colonised by travellers seeking unbridled pampering and romance, from the modernity of Male’ to the idyllic paradise of the Southern Atolls.

MALDIVES Makundu Vivanta By Taj – Coral Reef Coco Palm Bodu Hithi Huvafen Fushi

This is life stripped down to simplicity – bright blue skies, all-year sunshine and fantastic diving and snorkelling in lagoons the temperature of bath water. So superior are its beaches, so cobalt blue its waters and so warm its welcome that the country has become a byword for paradise whether it be for honeymooners, sun worshippers or divers.

Adaaran Select Hudhuran Fushi Sheraton Full Moon Resort & Spa MALÉ Taj Exotica Resort & Spa

The Maldives demands the attention of anyone looking for a uniquely indulgent break, breathtaking nature and sheer beauty that stays with you long after your tan has faded.

OUR TOP PICKS FOR MALDIVES

WHEN TO GO The Maldives has a tropical climate distinguished by two seasons, or monsoons: the dry northeast monsoon from December to March, and the wet southwestern monsoon from May to November, with more strong winds and rain. April is a transitional period noted for clear water and heat. The temperature remains remarkably consistent at around 30°C. The Maldives specialises in winter sun for Europeans, making high season December to April, when the islands enjoy the dry monsoon with little rain and lower humidity while Europe shivers. February to April is the hottest period and resorts are almost all operating at capacity during this period. Mid-December to early January comes at even more of a premium due to Christmas

38

adventureworld.co.nz

and New Year and prices are even higher. Easter and the Italian holiday week in August also attract peak prices at most resorts, especially the Italian-oriented ones. From May to November is the period when storms and rain are more likely. It’s still warm, but skies can be cloudy and the humidity is higher. This is the low season, with fewer people and lower prices, with the exception of August. Diving is good year-round, although a basic rule is that life on the reef is more varied and visibility better on the western side of any atoll from May to November and from the eastern side of any atoll December to April. This means you’d be wise to choose your resort accordingly. The surfing season runs from March to October, which is great as this is when resorts are cheapest. There is no bad time to visit the Maldives, although if you’re interested in spending time in Male’ or any other inhabited islands, Ramadan is a time to avoid as restaurants are closed and people aren’t always at their most receptive. Responsible Tourism At Adventure World we promote responsible travel to areas that conserve the natural environment and improve the well-being of those indigenous people. Working closely with our local ground operators, several who have won the prestigious AITO (Association of Independent Tour Operators) Responsible Tourism Award, we aim to promote responsible, sustainable tourism in all areas we visit. Tourism can be a positive force; notably providing income for poor communities and backing conservation by demonstrating those delicate habitats and their animal inhabitants are worth more to local people intact.

Understanding the potential harm that can come from promoting tourism through many of the delicate environments in which we operate is reflected in our ideology of 'leave no trace' tourism and we are continually monitoring our ground operations to ensure they meet with our high standards. Adventure World also offers a range of Volunteer Tours to various destinations, where you can combine a rewarding volunteer program with an exciting holiday.

However no surcharge in respect to cost or currency fluctuations will be made to the arrangements of your holiday once full payment has been received by Adventure World, unless any changes are made to your booking in accordance with these terms and conditions. This price guarantee does not apply to: (i) fares, charges or levies imposed by airlines up until ticketing; or (ii) any taxes, charges or levies imposed by any government or their agencies. 4. AMENDMENTS One change per booking is permitted free of charge. Each subsequent change will incur a fee of NZD75 per amendment to cover extra administrative and communication costs. In addition, cancellation and/ or amendment fees may also be imposed by service providers such as accommodation providers and other service providers depending on the nature of the change. To the extent we are able to do so, we will advise you of all applicable cancellation and/ or amendment charges at the time of confirmation of your booking. Separate conditions apply to air arrangements and are set out in Section 9 of these terms and conditions. 5. LATE BOOKINGS A fee of NZD75 per booking will be levied for bookings made within 10 working days of departure from New Zealand. Any booking request made within 10 working days or within any relevant supplier’s cancellation period cannot be processed until full payment has been received by Adventure World. 6. CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS – LAND ARRANGEMENTS If you decide to cancel your holiday or you are unable to travel Adventure World will refund the amount you have paid less (i) our reasonable costs and (ii) any cancellation fees imposed by other suppliers. It is likely that other suppliers’ cancellation fees (which we will pass on to you) will be greater when cancellation takes place closer to the departure date. If you notify us of cancellation more than 60 days before departure, then the cancellation charges are likely to only be the loss of your deposit. If you notify us of cancellation less than 60 days before departure, the cancellation charges may be up to 100% of the total booking cost. Regrettably cancellation charges cannot be waived. No refunds are available for unused services after departure from original city.

7. CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS – AIR ARRANGEMENTS Cancellation fees will apply as required by airlines regulations and will vary dependant upon the type of airfare utilised. Airfare prices and conditions are subject to change or withdrawal without notification until ticketed. Full payment is required before tickets can be issued. Adventure World cannot be held liable for any increases in prices or changes in any airline regulations. Foreign currency airfares and airport taxes may fluctuate and are subject to the rate of exchange on date of ticket issue. Increases in airport taxes are not the responsibility of Adventure World and can be imposed up to departure. To the extent we are able to do so we will advise you of any increases of which we are aware at the time of confirmation of your booking. 8. CONSUMER CLAIMS Should you encounter any problems on your holiday it is always better to try and solve it directly with the supplier. If it is not possible to do so and you wish to lodge a complaint please do so in writing within 30 days of completing your Adventure World arrangements. 9. NOT INCLUDED IN THE TOUR COST Visas, insurance, excess baggage charges (over applicable airline allowances), extra meals, laundry, drinks, souvenirs, and items of a personal nature are not included in the tour cost. Any pre-paid airfare taxes and surcharges are clearly identified in your booking confirmation if not included in the tour cost. 10. VARIATIONS Considerable care has been taken to compile the information in this brochure but circumstances not within Adventure World’s control may necessitate changes in itineraries, accommodation and costs in which case you will be informed as soon as possible. When it is necessary to change a hotel Adventure World reserves the right to substitute accommodation of at least a similar standard. Adventure World cannot be held responsible for any changes which may occur and reserves the right to increase the price of any travel arrangement up to the date of payment in full (or the date of ticketing in the case of airfares). This includes adjustment for fuel surcharges, airfare increases as well as international exchange rate fluctuations. To the extent we are able to do so, we will notify you of any applicable change in price prior to you making payment in full. Adventure World may update these terms and conditions at anytime. Any changes to these terms and conditions made after booking will be advised to you. The current version of terms and conditions will always be found on the website www.adventureworld.co.nz
