Two pandemics and two World Wars later, Jondaryan State School has stood the test of time and celebrated its 150th year servicing the local community.Queensland Governor Jeannette Young attended the school’s celebrations last weekend and thanked the school staff, the P&C and volunteers for their tireless efforts in organising such a momentous event. “The longevity of the school and the attendance of some many people here today, is testament to the affection in which Jondy is held,” she said. “Jondaryan Provisional School opened its gates on February 12th 1872 to the children of the workers of Jondaryan Station and since that date, over 3,100 students have passed through those school“That’sgates.what makes the P&C’s gift of new school gates to commemorate their 150th anniversary so fitting. “The gates are a beautiful symbol of the enduring welcoming that Jondy has given to children of the district for a century and a “It’shalf.my great honour to be here with you all today and inspiring to hear what a classroom education looked like over a century ago!” the Governor said. The newly improved Highfields Library opened its doors on Monday morning, with an official opening scheduled for Monday 19th September. Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Environment and Community Committee Portfolio Lead Cr Tim McMahon said while the new facility won’t officially be open until 19th September, as of this week residents will be able to borrow and return books at the new building, as well as access the public computers and free Wi-Fi.

Oakey Hospital’s McDonald House has received funds that were collected from the Community Chest Raffle during the month of August. The Community Chest raffle, sponsored by the Bernborough Tavern, raised $580 for residents at McDonald House. Elissa Hoerler of Oakey Hospital said the residents will get to decide what to spend the money on at their next meeting at the end of the Residentweek.Mick Haddy said he was very grateful to members of the Oakey community for their support and to Michael and John for their continued efforts.Raffle Coordinator John Webster said next month’s proceeds will be going to the Oakey Information Centre. Raffle tickets are on sale every Saturday from 11am to 1.30pm at the Bernborough Tavern, Campbell Street, where winners drawn from the raffle have the chance to win meat trays, bar tabs and other goodies.

“Although these services will be available from 5th September at the new library, some technology and facilities, including the community rooms, won’t be available for the initial period,” he said. The older library closed its doors last week on Monday 29th August 2022 to enable the remainder of the books and equipment to be moved to the new facility.“We thank the community for their patience and cooperation during this process and hope they are as excited as we are about the new facility,”Cr McMahon said. The origin of Inverness: Part I

Portion 61V (490 acres) was selected by Angus McKinnon, who named his property “Inverness” after a town in his homeland of Scotland.Whether he was resident on the property the whole time is unknown because for all of 1907 he was the proprietor of the Jubilee Hotel in Leichhardt Street, Brisbane until he passed away in that Hotel on December 1, 1907, aged 61. In 1908, Alexander Archibald came to Queensland from Smeaton, Victoria where he owned a property.Hecame north with a view to buying property and while here he found that his distant cousin, the late Angus McKinnon’s dairy farm was on the market by

He didn’t want to miss this bargain so he paid a deposit and returned to Victoria to sell his home property. Here he met some resistance from his wife and five younger children who wished to remain in the South.Hewrote to his two older sons, John and Jim, who were working in New Zealand to manage the Queensland farm in order to save his deposit. They immediately agreed and sailed from New Zealand.Jimenlisted in WWI and went to fight in France where he paid the ultimate sacrifice for his Johncountry.remained on “Inverness” as he had married Isobel Gordon (Sister of Andrew Gordon, his neighbour, who had selected Portion 60V and named it “Helmsley”) on October 5, 1910. They became parents of 7 children who all attended the Kelvinhaugh school. The Kelvinhaugh Cheese Factory was built by 1919 on the corner opposite “Inverness”.DuringWorld War II, in 1941, John sold “Inverness” for £8 an acre to Edward and Edith Thomas from a dairy farm at Tangham, a siding on the Oakey to Cecil Plains railway.

‘After careful consideration I have approved the mining leases for stage three of the New Acland project. The project also requires an associated water licence from the Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water.’

Goombungee Gallery: What’s on this month

After 15 years campaigning for the development of New Acland Stage 3 the approval for the mining leases has been given. There has never been a justifiable reason given by the Palaszczuk Government for this approval not to be granted and the result of them dragging their political feet has been the loss of 450 jobs, businesses closing and families having to move away from the Oakey community to find Allemployment.theconditions have been met several times over with the Federal government having approved all aspects of the leases and the associated water licence. It now lies in the hands of the Minister for Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water to grant the associated water licence to get the community up and running again, the mine operational.

Ken and Sandra, who have a rural background working with cattle, moved from the town of Gayndah to Oakey to seize a great business opportunity.

The people of Oakey have been treated like political pawns and it is time this state government provided some certainty for the Oakey community’s future development, employment opportunities, small businesses and families. I call on Minister Butcher to make this decision sooner rather than later, the decision could be made today. Do not let the people of Oakey hang on to false hope, provide them with a certainty for their future and grant the approval for the associated water licence.

Mr Mellon said the rise of cellular agriculture (the science of growing meat and dairy products from animal cells and singlecelled organisms) will completely up-end the $1161 billion global dairy industry within the decade, as he hopes consumers turn to ‘‘ animal-free milk’’, bioidentical but made in a lab.‘‘It’s my honest opinion. I know it’s not very popular,” he said. He explained that a lab-grown milk product is already approved in the US and consumers are already comfortable with alternative milks, whether oat, almond or dairy across the world.

Morrissey & Co, a family owned and run business which manufactures cattle handling equipment, is set to expand its operations thanks to a state government grant.

The Jandowae-based company will build a state-of the art agricultural manufacturing facility which is set to create good jobs thanks to funding under the Queensland Government’s Rural Economic Development (RED) Grant scheme. Morrissey & Co is one of 16 businesses approved in the fourth round of the (RED) Grants program. These 16 projects are expected to create more than 217 direct long-term jobs across Queensland.

Lab-Grown Milk will wipe out Dairy Farming, says investor

Lamb and sheep prices are lifting as well as sheep slaughter, which has lifted 22 per cent week-on-week with strong numbers coming out of Victoria. The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) has held firm over 1,000¢. Tamworth and Singleton traded at the largest premium on the national average, operating at a premium of 109¢ and 104¢ respectively. Varied quality and strong prices across saleyards are allowing plainer types to fetch higher prices while boosting restocker demand for cattle of good quality, especially for young cattle and vealers. Other saleyards across NSW and Victoria are still seeing very mixed quality with the wintery conditions from the last few months, while Queensland saleyards are seeing larger yardings pulled from a wider area as demand improves moving into the warmer months. The strengthening in sheep and lamb prices and quality across other parts of the country gives a promising picture of what is to come for the spring season as restockers look to increase their numbers. Cattle slaughter is back week-on-week after a softening in numbers in NSW by thirteen per cent, with national cattle slaughter currently sitting below year-ago levels at 93,570 head.

average husbandry costs of managing self-replacing rangeland meat goats is around $0.56/head per annum which is relatively low compared to other enterprises and part of their profitability story. “Through the research, we found that existing rangeland meat goat production systems typically work on fairly minimum management to achieve a successful system. “The results from our analyses are a guide and give insights using locally relevant data and longterm price expectations, however individualised economic analyses should ideally be conducted to give insights based on each manager’s own circumstances, expectations and available resources, to support decision making.”

Goat enterprises out performing beef cattle?

New research has found that self-replacing meat goat and meat sheep enterprises in the semi-arid parts of Queensland are profitable and resilient alternatives to beef cattle enterprises. An assessment of the profitability of different livestock enterprises in the semi-arid rangelands of northern Australia found self-replacing meat goat enterprises produced the second greatest rate of return on total capital per annum (3.7%), only just below self-replacing meat sheepThe(3.9%).major overall finding of the paper suggests farmers changing from a predominantly beef enterprise to rangeland meat goat production could substantially improve the long-term profit of the property, despite increasing financial risk andHowever, indebtedness. other alternative enterprises including steer finishing, self-replacing beef cattle herds, self-replacing Merino wool flocks and a wether wool production enterprise all produced lower returns. Facing high climate variability and periods of severe drought, a research project started in 2019 by Dr Maree Bowen and Fred Chudleigh from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (Queensland), sought to find out how livestock operations in the semi-arid rangelands of northern Australia could build resilience and profitability through diversifying livestock.

Infamous UK investor Jim Mellon predicts that by the end of the decade lab-grown milk will make dairy farming completely redundant.

Dr Bowen said researchers worked with different businesses in the region to assess the economic benefit of diversifying income streams or changing enterprises. She said the operating profit and return on capital were very good for existing sheep and goat enterprises based on the predicted future prices that were estimated in 2019. “For goats, there has been a relative increase in meat price over the years, and we found that the

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has introduced a new Australian Fire Danger Rating System (AFDRS) that brings all States into line with the same rating system to avoid confusion and create unity. This new nationally consistent rating system better describes the overall fire danger risk at a finer geographic scale. It improves the reliability of fire danger forecasts by using the latest scientific understanding about weather, fuel and how fire behaviour behaves in different types of vegetation.TheBOM developed new fire behaviour models and a new fire danger calculator that now includes eight major fuel types in the models: forest, grassland, grassy woodland, spinifex, shrubland, mallee-heath, buttongrass and pine. BOM spokesperson Nina Bowbridge said under the new system, the Bureau will provide a whole new suite of products and tools for fire agencies and the community to inform better decision making, including multi-week and seasonal forecast weather outlook“Theseservice.changes will drive improvement in our current fire weather services, including our Incident Weather Forecasts and warnings, that inform crucial decision making by emergency service agencies and the wider community during bushfire events,” sheThesaid.Bureau has been working closely with its emergency service partners, AFAC, and the trialcompletingtheGovernmentCommonwealthtodevelopAFDRS,includingasuccessfulserviceinlate2021, completing internal training and developing the products in preparation for the September 2022 launch.“Communities can keep up to date with fire weather warnings on the Bureau’s website and through their relevant state or territory emergency service website. The information will soon also be available on the BOM Weather app, under the forecast description in both text and as a visual marker.”

Oakey Float organiser Zoe Grainger said the float is expected to be complete by this “We’reFriday.just adding the finishing touches this week after we had a big working bee last Saturday,” she“Allsaid.of the big tasks are out of the way now. “We have made model buildings of Oakey businesses who have sponsored this year’s float, including the Oakey Pharmacy, Oakey Electrical, Ray White Rural Oakey, Oakey Family Dental, Oakey Newsgency, Oakey CWA and Great Country Pies Bakery. “Little model replicas of their premises will be featured on the float, which will be great exposure for these local businesses and for Oakey in general as the event is televised nationally.”MsGrainger wants all of Oakey to get along to the Parade in Toowoomba on Saturday 17th September at 10am. The Oakey Pharmacy is the first of the sponsoring businesses’ model replicas to be built and placed on the float.

Dedicated volunteers have been spending countless hours preparing and decorating this year’s Oakey Float for the Carnival of Flowers Parade, which is happening next Saturday 17th September.
