Oakey Police Senior Constable Paul Holgate said a member of the public alerted emergency services to a car which had crashed on the Warrego Highway near Aubigny Road. He said the vehicle was empty when police, ambulance and an Oakey Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) crew attended at 10.25pm. The QFES team remained on site for 15 minutes to make the scene safe and to ensure Ergon Energy was aware of the damage to the light poles. Senior Constable Holgate said preliminary inquiries indicated the Nissan X-Trail was travelling west on the Warrego Highway when it crossed onto the other side of the road. “The driver narrowly missed hitting one light pole, collected a second and dragged it for about 20 metres before coming to rest at the base of a third pole,”
Emergency services located the empty vehicle on the northern side of the Warrego Highway near Aubigny Road. he said. Police located the driver of the vehicle at a Bowenville address. The 53-years-old Bowenville man is reported to have received a lift from the scene
shortly after the crash. The man was transported to the Toowoomba Hospital with minor injuries. Senior Constable Holgate said investigations continue into the crash.
He said it was lucky for both the man and fellow motorists that no one was seriously injured or killed. He urged drivers to take due care and attention at all times.
Local man critical after fight
A 51-years-old Oakey man sustained critical injuries to his head and face following a physical altercation with another man at an Oakey residence on Saturday evening. Toowoomba detectives allege that a 51-years-old Dalby man was visiting an associate in Oakey when the pair became involved in a physical altercation. As a result, the Oakey
man sustained critical injuries. He was transported to the Toowoomba hospital for treatment and was later airlifted to the Gold Coast University Hospital.
The Dalby man was charged with causing grievous bodily harm and was refused bail. He appeared at the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Monday and was
remanded in custody. He will next appear in court on October 12. Anyone with more information on the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the testing site was needed to support the mandatory testing regime that came into effect on 30 July for freight and logistics drivers coming into Queensland. “These are challenging times for everyone and the freight industry has continued to step up to meet the additional requirements that have been asked of them since the pandemic began,” he said. “The heavy vehicle industry ensures shop shelves remain stocked and vaccines reach their destination, so I thank them for continuing to work with

Proposed Voluntary Assisted Dying laws
Member for Condamine Pat Weir is inviting all local residents to have their say on prospective Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) laws which will be debated in Queensland Parliament next month.
Mr Weir (pictured right) said he has opened a survey giving locals an opportunity to voice their opinion on the bill. The proposed bill would give eligible people the opportunity to choose the timing and circumstances of their death. VAD would only be offered to a narrow population of the community and would be restricted to people who: have been diagnosed with a disease, illness or medical condition that is advanced, progressive and is expected to cause death within 12 months are suffering intolerable pain from the condition; - are at least 18 years of age; - have decisionmaking capacity; are acting voluntarily and without coercion; - are an Australian Citizen; permanent resident; or have been residing here for at least three years; and - have been a resident of Queensland for at least 12 months. Two medical practitioners who have met training and
eligibility requirements will need to assess the person and class them as eligible. Mr Weir urged all Condamine residents to have a full understanding of the bill and process before taking part in the survey. “Unless you are diagnosed with a terminal issue with less than 12 months to live and in intolerable pain you are not eligible. It’s constricted down to those who have a serious disease, an advanced disease,” he said. “There seems to be a perception that people with a disease like dementia are included, they’re not. “It doesn’t cover them. “It doesn’t cover mental illness. “You have to be in complete control of your faculties and assessed as being capable of signing the document to say that you want to end your life. “It’s very narrow.” Mr Weir said he will take into account the results of the survey when voting on the legislation. “I’m taking feedback from Condamine residents alone,” he said. “We are getting a lot of emails and phone calls on

Concert a victim of COVID
Fans of country artist Tracy Coster will be disappointed to hear that a concert scheduled for the Gowrie Little Plain Hall has been cancelled. Organisers made the call after the COVID-19 situation in New South Wales continued on a worsening trend late last week. Although Tracy Coster remained optimistic, there was considerable doubt that she would have been able to come across the state border. The concert, part of the country music singer’s Southerly Change Tour had been scheduled to take place at Gowrie Little

TO THE PAST
Bunya Mountains trip
During the August school holidays in 1961, with no cows to shepherd and all the school windows washed, the Weise family of Cory Street, Oakey took a trip to the Bunya Mountains - a pleasure we’d never indulged in prior to this.
Our only outings had been to the Oakey Show each year and to the picture theatre on Saturday nights. When we arrived at the Bunyas, we only made it to the bottom of the Soldier’s Road, which at the time was only a very steep graded
gravel road, because the radiator of our 1957 FE Holden ute boiled. So we spent an enjoyable day in the company of Fred Klein “the last of the Bullockies” who lived nearby in a galvanized iron hut.

Foaling season begins in region
With the first foal arriving in the hospital earlier this month, the team at Darling Downs Vets is urging all local horse owners to know the signs of a healthy foal and be able to identify when an animal needs additional medical attention.
Darling Downs Vets veterinary nurse Alex Walters said the first few hours of a newborn foal’s life are critical and it is important to be able to identify those foals who may benefit from early veterinary intervention. “Normal foals show a reasonably predictive pattern of behaviour after birth, and any deviations from this can be an early indication of a problem,” she said. Ms Walters said after birth a foal should: - be able to sit on its chest within 5 to 10 minutes; - have a strong suck reflex within 20 minutes; - be able to stand within

one hour and nurse within two hours of birth; - urinate within 12 hours; and - begin to pass meconium (first manure) within 12 hours after birth. Ms Walters said early recognition of abnormal foals allows us to increase the chance of successful treatment and in turn a healthier foal. She said it is important to seek veterinary care if the foal doesn’t follow the above timeline, is born prematurely, shows altered behaviour, has diarrhoea, has respiratory distress or becomes lame. “It is advised that both the mare and foal be checked by a vet within 24 hours of foaling,” Ms Walters said. “A blood sample can be taken at this time to measure the immunity (IgG) levels of the foal.

24/7 Safety - Airfield Operations Team
The Airfield Operations team may be based at Swartz Barracks but you’ll more likely see them on the road to any one of nearly seventy locations ensuring that all airside runways, taxiways and aircraft movement areas are safe for use.
A committed and dedicated team, the Airfield Operations members are responsible for maintaining the safety of all the airside areas of the Oakey Base and two satellite aerodromes at Brymaroo and Wyoming. As well as this they look after 65 remote landing points that are critical for the simulation of real-world activities and remain grateful to the many land owners in the area for supporting this work.
Throughout each working day and night team members conduct inspections by driving up the runways or around the airside roads (with lights flashing!) looking for FOD (Foreign Object Debris.) FOD can be anything from rubbish, deceased wildlife or other material and poses a major hazard as it can cause substantial damage to aircraft. Wildlife also pose a threat to the safety of the

aircraft. Birds and wildlife are carefully monitored, with counts completed twice each day. The Airfield Operations team also coordinates and reports all airfield maintenance to make sure that workers are kept safely away from any aircraft and can communicate directly with the Air Traffic Control Tower and sometimes directly with aircraft to maintain safety.

Airfield Operations also coordinate all airfield activities, both military and civilian, from organising airspace clearance for local drones, managing crop dusting aircraft in the area and coordinating visiting military aircraft from all over Australia as well as
facilitating Search and Rescue efforts in the event of an aircraft emergency. Vehicle driver training is another task handled by the Airfield Operations team, including the on-base emergency services. Remember, you will often see the Airfield Ops team out
testing and maintaining these areas, and you may also see them at the regional FarmFest event as they help Army colleagues with community liaison activities. If you have any concerns they are always up for a chat, call on 4577 7136 and they will do their best to help.
Clear, blue and 22
Based at Swartz Barracks the Bureau of Meteorology’s Oakey office has been providing specialised weather support to AAVNTC for nearly half a century, and while the average Oakey winter forecast is “clear, blue and twenty two degrees” the team is always on the lookout for rapid changes. Meteorologist Bronwyn Duncan says the Bureau is responsible for preparing half hourly weather observations and hourly updates to the Terminal Aerodrome Forecast that keeps Singaporean and Australian military aviators informed. “We make use of a range of tools including a network of automatic weather stations, satellite imagery and RADAR to track how the weather is evolving,” she says. “Additionally, with the Bronwyn Duncan keeping a close eye on the weather. - Photo, Bradley Richardson aid of computer models we can determine how we expect the weather to change over the next few days.” The Met Office issues weather warnings when needed as well as ad-hoc briefings and discussions that allow personnel to determine what weather phenomena may impact their objective and safety during a mission, as well as providing weather support during times of crisis and natural disaster, as was evidenced during the 2019 bushfires. “Weather watch forms a significant part of the job,” Bronwyn notes. “While an Oakey winter is known for being ‘clear,
blue and twenty-two’, severe thunderstorms, hail and damaging wind in summer provide a significant danger to crew both in the air and on the ground. “On a storm day, the atmosphere in the office is electric as we track thunderstorm cells using RADAR, satellite and lightning data, and relay this information through weather warnings, face to face briefings and telephone calls.” The work doesn’t end with the sun setting, with the team also providing night briefs with the latest weather information enabling military aviators to make informed decisions regarding mission profiles.
