Wait for Stage 3 mining approvals

Minister for Resources Scott Stewart said the Queensland Government will “thoroughly consider” findings from the Land Court after Member Peta Stilgoe OAM recommended New Acland Stage 3 be approved, during the last Land Court sitting for 2021 on Friday. Mr Stewart, whose department will have the final decision on whether Stage 3 mining leases and environment authority (EA) is approved, said the State Government has always committed to waiting until the legal process was concluded. “We’ve always said we will let the legal process finish before any decision was made,” he said. “As a government, we will now thoroughly consider the recommendation from the Land Court of Queensland.” Member Stilgoe OAM said she understood the “frustration” of Oakey Coal Action Alliance (OCAA) members who resided near the mine and respected their views but said the recent behaviour of New Acland Coal (NAC) showed the business would and could follow any environmental conditions placed on Stage 3. “If NAC had taken no action to address noise and air quality concerns, I would have no hesitation in recommending against the grant,” Member Stilgoe OAM said.
