IS ENOUGH ENOUGH?

Let the man in the mirror answer that question

Quite a few years ago, a couple of us were talking with our pastor about how our church was going to fund the coming year.

It was a small church, membership was stagnant, dollars were hard to come by, and the two of us had been tapped to devise a plan to squeeze more blood from the same turnips, so to speak.

As these things tend to go at a church, the discussion turned to the “tithe” and whether talking about donating a specific percentage of members’ income was realistic, given our daily living expenses and the responsibilities we have to ourselves and to our families, much less to something or someone else.

The “how much” part was pretty clear, since 10 percent is the generally

referred-to magic number. But the “how much is enough” question was harder to answer.

And then the other guy threw the pastor a curve.

“Do I calculate my tithe before or after taxes?” he asked the pastor. “And which taxes count?”

He had a point: There are property taxes and sales taxes and gasoline

better parent or spouse.

We’re expected to break new ground in a new year, so it seems, and we generally give it a game effort for a week or two or three.

And then those eternal questions arise again: How much is enough? How much do I really need to do differently, and what difference will it really make?

Why can’t I just eat what I want? Do I really need that much exercise? Does my boss deserve my best effort? Can I be a better parent or spouse?

taxes and all kinds of other taxes, and surely we should get a “discount” for some of these taxes as part of the tithe equation.

And as it turns out, “how much is enough” is a question that never goes away, particularly this time of year.

Every January, most of us at least toss a glance in the direction of doing something different with our lives. Maybe it’s eating less or eating better. Maybe it’s exercising. Maybe it’s putting in more effort at work or trying to be a

If only there was a concrete answer to those questions, so you and I and everyone else could just get on with the business of doing what we need to do to live our lives correctly.

As it turns out, thinking back to how the pastor answered the guy’s tax-andtithe question that day, there is at least one take-it-to-the-bank answer.

“Well,” the pastor told us, clearing his throat and leaning forward ever so slightly.

“When you’re trying to figure out how much is enough,” he said, “look in a mirror, smile widely, and ask yourself what you need to do to keep looking that way all year long.”

THE ROCK FROM THE SIDELINES

The White Rock Marathon is one of the few occasions in your life where you can actually yell to tell someone “where to go” and they appreciate it [Advocate Back Talk blog, “Ways to Give”].

—Mike, ViA ADVOCATeMAG.COM

Not many things in this city promote more civic pride then the marathon. This is a great thing to volunteer for.

—CHRiS, ViA ADVOCATeMAG.COM

As soon as the runners began flying through the intersection, neighbors started filing in. Everyone was cheering on the runners — by name, if we could see their bibs. And, most remarkably, the exhausted runners thanked the officers and crowd as they continued through Lakewood.

LIGHTS OUT IN LAKEWOOD

My son came home last night saying he heard the power outage was caused by the big beautiful tree that’s all lit up on the corner of Lakewood and Lakeshore [Advocate Back Talk blog, “Power out in parts of Lakewood”]. Too many lights! I take it with a grain of salt, but it makes for a good rumor.

—LAkeWOODeR, ViA ADVOCATeMAG.COM

I told my husband that there must have been a “brownout” due to all the Lakewood yard and home decorations! They are all just beautiful this year. Seems like everyone went all out. I guess high electric bills are no problem for Lakewood residents. What recession?

—SHARON, ViA ADVOCATeMAG.COM

SNOW? BAH HUMBUG!

For the love of god. Snow flurries? [Advocate Back Talk blog, “Video: The neighborhood’s first snowfall”] What would happen around here if we really got some snow?

Remodeling Talk...

Aging in Place (AIP) and Accessibility Changes for Your Home

What you need to know…

During the holiday season, it’s common to experience accessibility and safety challenges in our homes that affect our guests, and even residents. Now is a great time to begin thinking long-term about accommodating the changing needs of the people who live in and visit your home. Creating the right environment requires what’s known as an Aging in Place (AIP) plan.

We’ll help you get started in this month’s issue of Remodeling Talk. You’ll learn about safety and accessibility modifications, and ways to make your home more adaptable as your needs change in the future. We’ll tell you who to talk to, and why only certain remodelers like Bella Vista Company are able to make modifications according to NAHB standards.

The possibilities for AIP modifications are infinite. An experienced remodeler can assess your particular needs and offer a variety of solutions to accommodate them. Here are some of the most common AIP modifications:

Depending on the health and physical ability of residents and visitors, you may need to widen doorways for more clearance, eliminate steps for wheelchair accessibility and maneuverability, and possibly install a ramp. Vertical lifts, platform lifts, chair lifts and residential elevators can make two-story homes more accessible. Driveways and garages are another consideration. Slippery surfaces can be changed to textured, non-slip surfaces that are easier to maintain, and the garage can be renovated for better maneuverability.

To improve maneuverability in the bathroom, space can be expanded, bath and shower grab bars installed, and specially designed

bathing facilities can replace standard units.

In the kitchen, the workflow design can be improved, counter top heights may need to be lowered, and cabinetry can be redesigned to make the area more user-friendly. Entry to the kitchen may need to be widened and ramps can replace single steps for better access.

to make controls easier to use and filters easier to maintain. The electrical system and lighting can be revised to address the new requirements of other AIP renovations around the house.

To create the right AIP plan for your home, start talking early on with a remodeler. Look for the (CAPS) Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist designation, which indicates specific training in the needs of aging adults and the disabled, AIP modifications, and solutions to common problems. CAPS professionals have training in the strategies for designing and building aesthetically enriching, barrierfree living environments.

Most CAPS certified remodelers, including Bella Vista Company, would be glad to answer your questions even if you’re just beginning to consider an AIP plan. We’re especially happy to take your calls early on – to ensure you stay in your home and remain our friend and neighbor for many holiday seasons to come.

Around the house, contrasting colors can be used to show subtle differentiations in level changes, edges, hot, cold, or danger. The HVAC system can be modernized

KERA recently launched a new all-music station, KXT FM 91.7. Little Forest Hills resident JOE KOZERA is the station’s afternoon and evening DJ. To gain more members, KXT expects to have free concerts and discounts for its members, and the station just might be advancing a musical renaissance for Dallas.

How did you get into radio?

Well, how far back do you want to go? I had a love for radio when I was little. We lived in Las Vegas, way out of town, and I could only pick up one station on AM. I wrote to them, and they let me come to their station in downtown Las Vegas.

But you didn’t go into radio after that. When did your radio career start?

I moved to Texas in 2003 or 2004, and I found a little country station in Bridgeport, and so I wrote to them, and they said, ‘Come on down.’ And they let me on the air on the second night. I didn’t know the music at all, and that’s how I really learned, from being thrown into the fire like that. About a year later, I found another station in Weatherford. I wrote to them and asked if I could do anything — sweep floors, whatever. And it turned out their Sunday guy had just quit, so they hired me for that.

So persistence paid off?

And that’s another case where I didn’t know the music at all. It was an adult contemporary station, but on Sunday it was all Christian music, and they kind of threw me into it.

anD tHen You moveD to keRa?

I got a job at keRa in 2005 on the production side. and now I’m at kXt It’s the afternoon and evening show.

tell us about tHe kX t FoRmat.

It’s a mix of what’s called triple a — adult album alternative, alternative country, singer-songwriter, independent and local stuff.

Do You get to plaY WHateveR You Want?

I don’t make the playlist; I bring in music, but our music coordinator, gini mascorro, makes the playlist.

WHY Is tHat?

eventually, I’ll be moving my own playlists. I’ve brought in a bunch of music, but not nearly as much as she has. I’m developing my own playlists, and that will come, but I am always so pleased with what they give me that I have no complaints. gini’s listened to so much music, and she appreciates all kinds of music, so that’s what makes her such a good music coordinator.

I knoW a lot oF people aRe veRY pleaseD WItH kX t WHY aRe You eXcIteD about It?

there was nothing like it in Dallas, Fort Worth, Denton where independent and local artists could be heard. there are college stations and the other community station that’s here, but really there’s a whole lot of commercial radio in Dallas. so there was a huge hole in the market. there’s always been a big music scene here, but I’m expecting it to become as big as seattle in the ’90s as far as our music scene goes.

WHat aRe YouR FavoRIte local banDs?

oh, there are so many. I like bubba Hernandez, andrew tinker. the Deathray Davies are outstanding, little black Dress. all this stuff is just so different than anything you’ll here anywhere else.

WHat kInD oF musIc aRe You Into peRsonallY?

the beatles are my all time favorite band. I love anything with vocal harmony.

anY tHIng You can’t stanD?

I don’t really care for hip-hop and rap that much. some of it’s really good. a lot of the hard-core hip-hop and rap, I don’t care for.

? How can I request a bus stop closer to my house? What if I’m not able to make t H e Walk at all?

It’s easier than you might think to get a bus to come closer to you, as opposed to you walking block after block just to get to the nearest bus stop. the entire process may only take a matter of weeks, so it might be to your benefit to inquire about a new bus stop closer to your home. Here’s how it works:

(such as a history of vandalism, damage, etc.). t he surveyors will then come up with an assessment of why the neighborhood doesn’t have service, and present those findings to city council. It will then take 10–15 business days for the city to determine whether or not to add the bus stop.

1.

First, contact D a R t You will need to complete a request form, which will ask for information such as where you would like the bus stop to be, and why it would be beneficial to have a bus stop at that particular location. If the new location is within a pre-existing bus route, then the process will be a lot easier and less time-intensive. If the location is outside the boundaries of D a R t bus routes, your request will go to city councilmen, who ultimately will decide the outcome.

3. s enior citizens and people with disabilities are able to avoid all the hassle and take advantage of D a R t ’s paratransit program. t he paratransit buses are wheelchair accessible, and offer curbside service to anyone who can’t easily make it to the nearest bus stop. It’s not a service for the lazy, however; paratransit riders must submit the necessary forms (available on D a R t ’s website) and provide a doctor’s assessment. a nyone approved simply needs to provide a schedule of when and where he will need picked up at on specific days and hours.

4.

a fter receiving the request, D a R t begins investigating the new location. Its surveyors look at factors such as the number of riders in and around your neighborhood that the new bus stop would benefit. t hey also will be looking for potential reasons why a bus stop wasn’t in that location to begin with

2.

For more information about this or any other transit issue, contact D a R t at 214.749.3333 or visit dart.org.

the shock of a lifetime

Avid runner Roland Melton planned to jog around White Rock Lake, but at the last minute, he decided the December air was a little chilly, so he hit the treadmill at the neighborhood YMCA instead. A short time into his workout, his chest and arms grew achy, so he slowed to a walk. “That’s the last thing I remember,” he says. Hours later, Melton regained consciousness in the Baylor emergency room, where he learned he’d suffered from a heart attack, which he would not have survived had it not been for a well-prepared and quick-witted YMCA employee. Isaac Lunger, a 23-year-old University of Texas at Dallas student, was working at the front desk, teaching a fellow White Rock YMCA employee to fix a spin bike, when he heard the thud.

“I saw him there on the ground by the treadmill,” Lunger says. “I told the guy at the desk to call 911, and then my training kicked in.” He grabbed oxygen, and attached the defibrillator machine to Melton, who was no longer breathing.

“I was shocked. I mean, this guy was in good shape. He’d been coming here the 6-plus years I’ve been working here,” Lunger says. “The Y requires [emergency response] training once a year, and that just took over, I guess. After it was all over I thought to myself, ‘What just happened?’” It took CPR and three shocks with the defibrillator to resume Melton’s breathing and pulse just before the paramedics arrived. Lunger says a nurse, who happened to be working out at the time, and other employees helped him save Melton’s life. “It was a life-changing experience for me, too,” Lunger says. “It’s something I know I will never forget.”

THE WHITE ROCK YMCA starts its annual fundraising campaign this month. Visit whiterockymca.org for more information.

Waltz (or fox trot or rumba) into the theater on a night when The Singapore Slingers are onstage, and you’ll feel transported back in time to a world where men sport bowties and heavily pomaded hair, and women wearing soft golden locks and deep red lipstick smoke long cigarettes with impunity. The 18-piece orchestra, wearing only black and khaki-colored clothing (they’re going for the look of a sepia-tinted photo, the leader explains), performs ditties on strings and horns that haven’t been mainstream since the First World War. Frontman Matt Tolentino might be on the tuba, sax, ukulele or, most likely, the accordion. “The accordion is my main squeeze,” he says. You might expect this purveyor of early 1900-1935 era tunes (or of that joke) to be an old guy maybe someone who remembers ragtime records from his childhood, for example. But Tolentino is just 25 — a 2003 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. “I know nothing about pop music,” he says. “But when I was a kid, a neighbor gave me a recording of the house band from A Prairie Home Companion, and I enjoyed that. I learned to play clarinet in elementary school the sax, tuba and accordion in high school. I’ve always listened to this type of music.” He came up with The Singapore Slingers’ name, he says, from a cocktail popular in the 1920s. “I thought it was pretty clever. Later I learned there was an amateur basketball team by the same name,” he says laughing. “If there’s anything I know less about than pop music, it’s sports.”

Nearly four months after their launch party, the folks who formed Live Local East Dallas have recruited more than 200 members to join their cause. That’s a number they consider a success. But now that the initial hoopla is over, the nonprofit’s goal is to continue explaining to both neighborhood businesses and residents the importance of becoming a member. When telling people about Live Local, a common response is “Oh yeah, I live there,” says founding board member MaryBeth Shapiro of

Republic Title. “I tell them, ‘I know, but how do you live there?’”

The organization’s purpose is education, encouraging neighbors to “think local first while recognizing the economic, social and community benefits of doing business locally.” In that sense, anyone can live local, member or not. But Shapiro points out that the group fosters networking and encourages loyalty to our neighborhood. “What they’re getting out of it is helping join forces,” says Elaine Starkey, also a founding board member with Republic Title. “I have honestly thought, ‘I have to put my money where my mouth is now,’” she says. Through the organization, neighborhood business owners have discovered each other and embarked on new enterprises. “It’s like a jigsaw puzzle that can come together, and learning what people are doing that you didn’t even know about,” says Holly Greef, Live Local publicist.

JoiNiNg Live LocaL e ast DaLLas costs as little as $15 annually for a neighborhood resident and $50 for a business. Another networking get-together and membership drive will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 5-7 p.m. at Capitol Pub. Visit livelocaleastdallas.com for more details.

Some people drink booze or pop antidepressants in order to stave off the blues , but East Dallas resident Jessica Bullock deals in another way. “I could never be in a bad mood while I’m hula hooping,” she says. Bullock is a fan of String Cheese Incident, a jam band widely credited with spawning a modern day hooping craze among its followers. “My husband and I used to go to their shows 10 years ago, and I loved to watch the people in the hula hoop pits, but I never took part myself back then,” she says. Eventually she came around, though. At one of the shows, her hubby bought her a brightly colored hoop, and she immediately craved more. She even learned to make them herself —

Contemporary in 1966, the years were not kind to its styling or the tan-and-brown brick beginning to separate from the framing. “When you walked in, it looked like Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra would be standing at the bar, smoking a cigarette, drinking a drink,” Julie says.

AFTER/ Julie Squibb and custom home builder Larry Havens initially didn’t intend to change the house into a villa; the Squibbs wanted a relaxing home, one that felt like a vacation spot. The final 5,130-square-foot design — complete with Tuscan-influenced rock-face masonry, Italianate eave details and decorative, grapevine ironwork — answers their call for a place to get away. Inside, the wine-country theme continues with knotty alder and metal straps covering original heavy steel beams that hold up the roof in the Squibbs’ family room, a vast space perfect for entertaining family and friends. Two sets of French doors, set into grand arched windows, mirror one another on each side — one set opens to the pool area, an expansive space with a field of stamped, colored concrete. The other set of doors opens to the front courtyard. The kitchen and master bathroom are of a showhome size and finish — the home was, in fact, featured in the 2007 Lakewood Tour of Homes. Carl Squibb now has a place to soak in a state-of-the-art tub with granite surround next to a gas fireplace under a flatscreen TV. “Some nights, I have to go in and make sure he has not drowned,” his wife says. The Squibbs’ furniture is formal with a soft side: wood with classic capitals and tall-backed chairs with tapestry fabrics. In the dining room stands a massive, custom granite-topped table that can comfortably seat 10.

01.14.10-01.30.10 MILAREPA

$10-$15 Milarepa is the most beloved figure in Tibetan Buddhism, and he told his stories and taught his lessons in song. The 11th Century man was a real person, but his fantastic life story involves magic and myth. Playwrights Fred Curchack and Laura Jorgenson tell Milarepa’s stories of enlightenment through suffering with performances of their new play, “Milarepa”, at the Bath House Cultural Center. They use elements including music, lighting, dance and acting to tell the stories. The show is Curchack’s adaptation of two Tibetan texts, “The Life of Milarepa” and “100,000 Songs of Milarepa”. And it incorporates blues, rock and rap music. It’s not a somber show, says Curchack, who teaches at the University of Texas at Dallas. “It’s light-hearted and a lot of fun,” he says. fIRESIdE fARE

SITTING fIRESIdE ON C ApITOL pUb’S pATIO, it’s easy to forget you’re in Dallas, if even for just a moment. That’s thanks in large part to owner Peter Kenny. He left his native Scotland several years ago, with the intentions of starting in New York City and ending in Southern California. “I made it halfway across the country and fell in love in with Dallas.” The pub he created reflects his European roots. Soccer is always on TV, the menu features more fine whiskies than wines, and the pub serves a mean shepherd’s pie. “I think a lot of people also forget that we offer a weekend brunch,” Kenny adds, which you can enjoy by that cozy fireplace with one of the dozens of imports, or $12 bottomless mimosas.

OSBORNE SOLAZ ($10) SPAIN>

We are in mourning as we celebrate the Advocate annual Cheap Wine extravaganza and $10 Wine Osborne Solaz, the Spanish red blend that has stay of the Hall since its inception, is being fazed porate term is “selectively distributed in stores throughout U.S.,” but the reality is that the wine won’t be for stores where you used to buy it. (Osborne is replacing the Solaz with a brand called TempraTantrum; hopefully, it tastes better than the name.)

Otherwise, despite the weak dollar, 2009 was a banner year for cheap wine. The only other wines to drop out did so because the weak dollar pushed their prices above $10 — Falesco Vitiano, which produces a solid rosé, an even more solid white blend and a stunning red blend made of sangiovese, cabernet and merlot.

The Hall added five wines: A California chenin blanc from Vinum Cellars called CNW; Notorius, a white wine from Sicily; a red Rhone wine, La Ferme de Gicon; and vini merlot from Bulgaria, which may be the best cheap merlot I’ve ever tasted. Also, look for the 2007 Bota Box cabernet sauvingon, which at $5 a bottle, is a steal. I can’t, however, recommend any newer vintages.

Here’s the rest of this year’s Hall of Fame:

and especially the petite sirah. the Spanish sparkling wine, which comes in brut (dry), extra dry (sweeter than brut) and rosé.

about $12 for a 1-liter box). which can be found for as little as $6. and especially the sauvignon blanc, from southern France.

New Year’s black-eyed peas

Eating black-eyed peas for New Year’s is a Southern tradition that is supposed to bring good luck. But you don’t have to settle for canned beans. Put this on the stove to simmer after lunch, check on it periodically, and you’ll have dinner without much effort. Serve this with your favorite $10 wine.

Serves 4, takes about 2.5 hours

1 lb dried black-eyed peas

1 onion, chopped

1 carrot, chopped

1 celery stalk, chopped

1/2 bell pepper, chopped

2 cloves garlic, chopped

1 jalapeño, chopped

2 bay leaves

Salt and pepper to taste

Optional: Ham hock, pork neck bones or turkey neck bones

1. Combine all ingredients in a large pot. Add water to cover the beans by an inch or so.

2. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to simmer, cover, and cook until beans are tender. This could take as little as an hour or as long as three or four hours, depending on the beans. You may also need to add water if the beans look dry.

ask the WINE GUY?

Q. WHAT IS THE AVERAGE PRICE OF A BOTTLE OF WINE?

A. A lot less than you think — about $6, according to Nielsen, which tracks U.S. retail wine sales. Most of the wine sold in the U.S. costs less than $10. —JEFF SIEGEL

THE MEDIA PERPETUALLY FEEDS THE PUBLIC’S HUNGER FOR LISTS.

There are useful lists, such as Oprah’s “Top 10 Superfoods”, Time ’s “25 People to Blame for America’s Credit Crisis”, or Esquire ’s “Best Bars in America”. Then there are more gratuitous tabulations — Star magazine’s “Best and Worst Beach Bodies”, or TheEnquirer ’s index of gay and not gay celebrities, for instance. Maybe it’s the order and brevity lists inject into our overwhelming lives, or that they make large quantities of information more digestible. Whatever the reason, the masses enjoy consuming info in the form of neat numbered and bulleted boxes, and the Advocate is here to oblige. In fact, we love lists so much that we’ve compiled a list of lists (sometimes useful, sometimes superfluous) for readers who can’t get enough of them.

The ultimate guide to those off-the-wall yet good-to-know finds in our neighborhood

Their personalities are so magnetic that they can’t carry credit cards. Their charm is so contagious that vaccines have been created for it. The grass is greener on whatever side of the fence they are on. They are

THE MOST INTERESTING PEOPLE INEAST DALLAS

1. ABEL GONZALES. This guy is the master of deep fried foods. He’s brought us, via the great State Fair of Texas, fried Coke, fried cookie dough and, most recently, fried butter. Those grease-dripping goodies have garnered him a spot on “The Tonight Show”, a mention in Rolling Stone magazine and many a Big Tex Choice Award. And every year, Texans wait with watering mouths to see what he’ll fry up next. >>

3. Peter Snell. In New Zealand, the three-time gold winning Olympic runner holds the title “Athlete of the 20th Century”. There, he has his image on a postage stamp, a statue in his honor, his shoes on display in a museum, and he was recently named second on an annual New Zealand Reader’s Digest “Most Trusted Person” list. Here in our neighborhood, Snell enjoys relative anonymity. A Ph.D. now, he has turned his physical genius into scientific practice as an associate professor of medicine at the UT Southwestern medical center. His name still appears regularly in Running Times magazine.

2. Andi Comini. She displays a 9-foot dinosaur in her front yard and dresses it in a rotating assortment of hats, sunglasses and scarves, depending on the season. The Forest Hills resident also was a co-founder of the White Rock Lake Dog Park, and she started the Animal Alert program which helps reunite lost animals with their owners.

4. Bill Young. As programming director and president of KERA television station, Young has been analyzing the (relatively sophisticated) public’s television-watching appetites and habits for more than 30 years. He likes the British humor, music programs and documentaries he airs on KERA, but he reveals some surprising sensibilities as well. “I shouldn’t admit this ‘The Family Guy’ is one of my favorite shows. ‘The Simpsons’, too. My appreciation for comedy can go to both ends of the spectrum.”

It’s carwash time. You start with the inside, dropping 50 or 75 cents into the vacuum cleaner slot and ... you’re off to the races. Vacuuming furiously, you move hurriedly from one side of the vehicle to the other when the hose gets hooked on a door — oh no! — wasting precious seconds. Will you finish before the time is up? Or will you need to drop another 75 cents on that one measly remaining floorboard? To better your odds of beating the car vacuum clock, we’ve checked out neighborhood carwashes, stopwatch in hand, to find

This is all about the unexpected. You are at a standby eatery and discover some item on the menu — something you did not intend to order — that throws you for a pleasant loop. Here are

1. MATCHA LATTE AT WHITE ROCK COFFEE. Most of us hang here for the live music, homey atmosphere, free WiFi and ready access to our favorite legal drug — everyone knows this coffee shop on Northwest Highway and Shoreview has some of the best java this side of Columbia. But I know a few coffee drinkers who have turned to tea after trying the rich, foamy and honey infused matcha tea latte hidden deep within the “other hot drinks” section of the menu.

Our neighborhood is teeming with creative minds. In fact, it’s home to several inventors — not the nutty mad-scientist ilk (though we claim and love some of those too), but real inventors whose creations have earned them a pretty penny and a place in history. We’ve come up with a whole list of THINGS INVENTED

IN EAST DALLAS

1. PEDAL PUSHERS. In 1951, a clothing designer named Maryon Van Gilder ran into a production snafu that left 100,000 pair of pants too short. “Thankfully, it occurred to me the pants would be excellent for bike riding because they wouldn’t get caught in the spokes,” Van Gilder says. “I told one of my assistants to go ahead and put in a hem, and we’d call them ‘pedal pushers’.”

2. FROZEN MARGARITA MACHINE. The bartenders at Mariano’s Tex Mex restaurant, formerly located at Old Town shopping center, were peeved at the constant frozen margarita orders because they took so long to make. Owner Mariano Martinez -

mous margaritas so, he turned an old Slurpee machine into a frozen margarita maker and everyone was happy. Today his original margarita maker is on display at the Smithsonian Museum.

3. “GRANDMA GOTRUN OVER BY A REINDEER”. If an original song can be considered an invention, this is one so catchy that — though it might drive you crazy once a year — it will never go obsolete. The mind behind the zany ditty about an alcohol-fueled accident involving an old lady and a reckless reindeer is that of Hollywood Heights singer-songwriter Randy Brooks. Though he must have heard the campy carol a zillion times over the past 30 or so winters, it still warms his heart. “I can’t remember when the emotional high of hearing the song wore off,” Brooks says. “Now it’s more of an intellectual response — one of gratitude for how it has enriched my life.”

4. MARSHMALLOW GUN. For their son’s birthday party, Beaver and Kim Raymond of East Dallas rigged up a toy pump gun that shoots marshmallows. As soon as they saw how the kids reacted, they knew they had a smash hit on their hands. In 2009, their Marshmallow Shooter company saw $7.9 million in sales. They sell internationally at major toy retailers such as Toys R Us, and have appeared on “Ellen” and the “Today” show.

5. FLETCHER’S CORNY DOG. Neil and Minnie Fletcher owned and operated the theater company known as the Madcap Players. People came from all around Dallas to the Fletchers’ Haskell Avenue theater. One night Neil wanted to prepare a snack for the crowd and improvised with what he had laying around his tiny kitchen — wieners and corn meal. He wrapped a wiener in the corn meal, fried Corny Dogs to his audience.

HOME SALE PRICES ARE STILL DECLINING, BUT WE MAY BE ON THE VERGE OF A TURNAROUND

There’s good news about housing prices in our neighborhood. The final six months of 2009 weren’t quite as bad as the first six months, as measured by the fifth Advocate Home Price Snapshot, compiled with the help of Ron Burch at Coldwell Banker.

The news still isn’t great, but it does look like residential real estate prices have bottomed out. Single-family home sale prices fell in four of the five zip codes where we deliver magazines in East Dallas and Lakewood, compared to falling in all five through the middle of the year. Four areas declined in 2008, and just one zip code fell in January 2007. (We compile the snap shot every six months.)

Meanwhile, the average sale price declined in 15 of the 22 zip codes where we publish

zip codes, but mostly in the low single digits and not at the rates that showed up in the June numbers. The number of days a home spent on the market increased in all five East Dallas zip codes.

magazines. That compares to 17 declines in the first six months of the year, and 14 declines in the 2008 numbers. (For this snapshot, we used sales figures through Nov. 30 reported to the North Texas Real Estate Information System. A chart with complete figures for all 22 zip codes is on our website at advocatemag.com/home_price_snapshot.)

Overall, it looks as if the least expensive neighborhoods did the best.

That was true in East Dallas and Lakewood, where home prices increased 16 percent in 75223. Prices declined in the remaining four

Read all about the guys who say journalism and news reporting, as we know it, are dead

Reporter Manny Mendoza is faced with evidence that he is a member of a dying breed of journalists. Mark Birnbaum is a filmmaker specializing in probing documentaries about people and their plights.

When the two paired up on a project, it was a match made in media purgatory. Their movie, “Stop the Presses: The american newspaper in Peril”, which examines the condition of the american newspaper business, garnered accolades and nationwide buzz after screening at the 2009 aFI Film Festival.

Loss of newspaper advertising dollars to the Internet might be a threat not only to the newspaper industry, but also to americans’ quality of life, Mendoza says.

“‘Stop the Presses’ is about what is happening to print journalism. So much advertising has gone to the internet that it has become difficult for newspapers to perform the kind of in-depth watchdog function, that protective function, that it has provided in the past,” explains Mendoza, a White rock area

resident. “The question that comes up in the movie is, ‘If newspapers are in trouble, is democracy in trouble?’”

Through interviews with reporters, editors, media critics, professors and readers, “Stop the Presses” documents the historic role of newspaper journalists as public watchdogs. The Washington Post’s Ben Bradlee and Anne Hull, the New York Times’ David Carr, the New Yorker’s Ken Auletta, Ed Asner, TV’s Lou Grant, and former mayor Laura Miller, who once worked for the Morning News, are a few of those interviewed. Dallas Morning News execs don’t appear in the movie, which lays out the industry’s problems and explores possible

Birnbaum. “That seemed like hyperbole at the time, and we changed it. We could have stayed with the original title because, sadly, that’s what appears to be taking place.”

To back up his point, he reminds us that the Chicago Sun Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News all filed for bankruptcy protection this year, and that TheTribune Co. media group filed for bankruptcy in December 2008.

The filmmakers also have updated numbers since the original screening, effectively hammering home their point.

“New data by theProject for Excellence in Journalismshows that 10,000 journalists have been laid-off or bought-out since we concluded production of this project in 2008,” Birnbaum says. “That means some 14,000 journalists have lost their jobs nationally since 2001.”

As Birnbaum knew well and Mendoza learned quickly, making a documentary is no easy feat.

“It’s definitely a hard way to go. It’s a labor of love,” says Birnbaum, who has another film, “Champ: The Steve Mitchell Story” in release, as well as other projects in the works.

solutions without ever drawing any real conclusions (“If we had the answers, we could retire,” Mendoza quips).

Mendoza has worked at newspapers since 1979 when he was a copy boy at the Miami News He first met Birmbaum, aNorth Lake Highlands resident, while covering arts and entertainment for the Dallas Morning News Along with many other Morning News staffers, Mendoza in 2007 accepted a voluntary severance offer from the paper, after working there for 14 years. Birnbaum had several friends in similar positions.

“I was drawn to their struggle. I thought it would make an interesting film,” Birnbaum says.

The movie made its American television debut on KERA last October, and American Public Television will distribute it nationally beginning in early 2010.

Mendoza and Birnbaum have made a few changes to the film since its inception, including changing the subtitle.

“We originally subtitled the film‘Death of the American Newspaper’,” says

The sweet success of Stop the Presses, for Mendoza, is tempered with the film’s sad foundation. After all, the newspaper biz is in his blood.

“I pick up and read the Dallas Morning News and the New York Times every day, but I realize that the price will continue to rise and it will become a luxury item.

“I love newspapers,” says Mendoza, who still freelances for the Morning News “If there was one out there who would hire me, I’d go in a minute.”

tHe 12 HaBItS OF 2010

O NE YEAR TO A BETTER YOU

It takes 30 days to form a habit. So here are 12 habit-forming resolutions in the New Year with overt or covert spiritual character. Start one each month, and keep the previous ones going. By year’s end, you’ll have to introduce yourself to yourself.

January: Get healthy. Losing weight or getting in shape is almost always first on resolution lists. Diets don’t work long term; smaller portions do. Your motto: Eat less, move more. Even if you know your going to live forever in heaven, earth could use you a little longer and a little stronger.

February: Nurture romance. Valentine’s month makes this a natural. Even if you’re single and uninvolved, you can perk up your romantic soul. Read poetry, try a cool new place in town, and take a risk by initiating or stepping up a relationship (women can initiate, too). Imagination can change routine into romance.

March: Reach out. Spring brings new hope. Meet a neighbor. Find a community ministry to volunteer in. Ask forgiveness of someone you hurt, or offer it back to someone who hurt you.

a pril: Pay dues. You’ll file income tax returns mid-month and likely pay Uncle Sam. Do it carefully and cheerfully. Consider what you get for what you pay: national security, social security and subsidies of many kinds that underwrite our generally peaceable way of life. While you’re at it, pay all your bills on time to help your neighbors’ businesses.

May: Celebrate graduations. No matter how old or young you are, you know someone who is graduating from some level of school, military training or vocational preparation. Make sure they hear from you with a note or a gift or a party. Achievement should be praised. And if the graduate needs a job, marshal your contacts. Good time to make a calendar of birthdays and anniversaries to remember.

June: Grow something. Plant or join a community garden. Or just till a plot in your own yard. Vegetables or flowers, or both. Even a small potted indoor plant. Put your fingers in the dirt, and tend the soil. Learn patience and gratitude for nature’s mysteries and your place in it.

July: Wave flag. Go to a parade, install a flagpole on your front porch, buy a John Phillip Souza CD to play in your car, pray for the troops, send a care package to someone on the battlefield, read the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution all the way through. Loving the world starts at home; it just doesn’t end there.

a ugust: Commit spiritually. Whatever your faith tradition, decide to practice it faithfully. As school routines begin for some, make Sunday school and worship non-negotiables in your schedule. Put God first this fall, and watch everything else fall into place.

September: Read books. As kids break open textbooks, read alongside if not along with them. A book a month is good nourishment for mind and soul. Consider alternating fiction and non-fiction. Include reading about your own faith or someone else’s. Your conversational life will improve.

October: Unclutter life. Before the cold of winter, clean out the closet of anything you haven’t worn in a year. To keep it unworn is to keep it from someone who would wear it. Deliver it to a benevolence organization. Same with knickknacks and doodads and treasures laid up where moths and rust corrupt.

November: Practice gratitude. Get a running start on Thanksgiving by writing a personal note each day to someone. Don’t let the art be lost on you. A handwritten note means more now that few do it. Being a grateful person grows out of doing acts of gratitude. Start with a prayer of thanks before each note.

d ecember: Give unexpectedly. Double tip your waitress. Double tithe to your congregation. Slip the mail carrier and hairdresser something extra. Overdo it with people you love. Defeat materialism by lavishing nonmaterial gifts of love such as acts of service.

Be it so resolved

The suite includes three parking passes, 12 tickets for each game and a $300 credit per game (first year only) for food and beverage service in the suite. Games will be allocated in a lottery process prior to each season, with each shareholder selecting games and receiving an equal chance for Yankees, Red Sox, weekend and other premium games. Email rwamre@advocatemag.com or call 214-686-3595 with questions.

The Victim: Jeff Venable

The Crime : Theft

Date : Monday, Nov. 16

Time: Between 5:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Location: 6500 block of Anita

THE PORCH FURNITURE VANISHED.

Jeff Venable and his wife enjoyed the furniture on their front porch. The shady area made for a nice afternoon of relaxing with a glass of wine and some time outdoors in their North Lakewood home. As darkness approached, Veneable regularly would light a couple of Tiki torches to provide some extra light and help keep mosquitoes at bay.

“We used to sit out and watch everyone walk their dogs,” he says. “Rather than sit out back behind a fence, we would sit out front and watch people go by.”

The couple had gone to several outdoors stores to find just the right furniture to fit their porch. They chose a couple of metal rocking chairs, and had them painted the perfect shade of sage green.

On Nov. 16, Venable followed his normal routine, catching the bus for work. He noticed the furniture was in its usual place on the porch before he headed off.

“I came home [at 4:30 p.m.] and we had a naked front porch,” he says. “It’s always annoying that someone would come onto your property and take something.”

The Venables have not yet replaced their furniture, but plan to do so in the future — with more security.

Lt. Gloria Perez with the Dallas Police Northeast Patrol Division says this type of crime is not very common, but she recommends locking all pieces of furniture together or bringing them inside after use.

“Unfortunately anything left outside, be it porch furniture, lawn furniture or lawn equipment, if it is easy to take, it will be taken,” she says. “Keep the area well-lit and provide any foliage that can provide a barrier from potential thieves.”

TOO MUCH, TOO LATE?

T HE T IMBE r C r EE k DE v ELOPMENT MAy

Ten years ago, if a major real estate developer had said it was going to tear down aging apartments to put up a shiny new shopping center with two Walmarts and a Penney’s, plus 60,000 square feet of smaller retailers (not quite the size of one of the three corners at Casa Linda), most of us probably would have been thrilled at the prospect.

Today, though, the world and Lakewood and East Dallas is a much different place than it was a decade ago. Which leads to the question: Is the Timbercreek development at Skillman and Northwest Highway 10 years too late, a 20th-century project in a 21st-century world? Is developer Trammel Crow putting this thing up just in time for it to fail?

The thing that struck me is something that one of the developers told Dallas’ Only Daily Newspaper: “East Dallas is an underserved market and has seen very little retail investment.”

Which was true 10 years ago, but has been increasingly less true since. We’ve actually seen plenty of investment, whether of the mega-store variety like the Target at City Place or of the smaller, more local variety,

BE A DECADE BEHIND ITS TIME

like the renovations at Casa Linda or Mockingbird Station.

What we haven’t seen is the over the top, Frisco-style investment, which, at its heart, is what Timbercreek is. The developer is cramming almost one-half million square feet of shopping into the intersection which is across Central Expressway from 2 million square feet of shopping at NorthPark, 200,000 square feet or so in the Container Store center across from North Park, and one-half million more if you include the Bed Bath Beyond and Best Buy centers up Central.

I’m not sure we ever wanted that kind of development, even in the bad old days. That’s why we decided to live here and not in Frisco. And given the changes in the world since then, I’m not sure we want it or need it now. I have been told by almost every urban planner and development expert that I’ve interviewed over the past couple of years that large, shopping centerstyle developments are a thing of the past, and especially for in-town areas like ours. We’re supposed to be building smaller, more versatile mixed-use projects like Mockingbird Station. This has become such conventional wisdom that even the city’s updated planning code, the infamous Forward Dallas!, plays lip service to mixed use. (Which just adds to the irony, given that the city council had to approve pages of zoning changes to make Timbercreek possible.)

In addition, we’re supposed to be interested in shopping more locally, and not with large, multi-national chains. Talk to residents, and the complaints they have about retail aren’t that there isn’t a Walmart around here, but that there aren’t more Lakewood Shopping Centers.

The other disadvantage to Timbercreek? It’s going to cannibalize existing retail to fill its storefronts. Walmart has already announced that it will close its Park Lane Sam’s Club when Timbercreek opens, which will leave a gaping hole on that part of Greenville Avenue. Will Target finally abandon Medallion Center, given that its reason for being was to keep Walmart out, a reason that is gone now? And what will happen to Medallion if Target leaves? And that 60,000 square feet of smaller retail is not all going to be new; it’s going to come from chains that want to share a parking lot with two Walmarts instead of sitting in a strip center on Greenville or Mockingbird or Garland roads.

Failure, of course, is relative. The Timbercreek Walmarts, and probably Penney’s, will likely do enough business to justify their existence to their corporate bosses. But whether Trammel Crow can lease that other 60,000 square feet, even after the recession ends, and whether anyone will shop there — those are the questions. And if we end up with a monstrous shopping center and parking garage and not much else, no one wins.
