MAN IN THEMIRROR Perhaps he’s not an accurate reflection

Why do dogs chase their tails, even after they’ve caught them? Why do people with expensive cars intentionally take up two parking spaces in crowded parking lots?

And why does my aging body still do daily battle with acne?

That’s a question I asked myself the other morning while contorting my face in the mirror right before I gummed my oatmeal and applesauce. It’s not exactly a traditional resolution, I suppose, but surely there must be a way to rid myself of facial blemishes in the new year.

The fact that acne is a problem that just now has risen to the top of my list probably says a lot about my life, especially since the issue continued to clog my brain on the drive to work and even as I fired up the computer to see what had filled my inbox overnight.

And then I read the short email: A good friend was apologizing that a golf outing we were planning a few months down the road probably wouldn’t be happening because he just found out he had esophageal cancer.

I read the few sentences in the email a couple of times, not so much because I didn’t understand what he was saying but because I didn’t want to understand. And then I did what most people would do — I Googled “esophageal cancer” because I didn’t know much about it.

And a few clicks into my research, after soberly noting that the most recommended form of treatment involves finding a “clinical trial”, I saw the numbers: About 16,640 new cases of esophageal cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year, and about 14,500 people die of the disease each year.

As my friend, a real estate investment guy who single-handedly pulled me through our MBA accounting class, noted wryly when I talked with him later: “I’ve run the numbers, and they aren’t very rosy.”

His wife of 15-plus years took the news fairly well, he said, but their two teenagers sobbed uncontrollably. Surgery was out because his cancer already had snuck over to

surrounding organs, so he was pinning hope on four progressively more aggressive rounds of chemotherapy, four 10-day blocks of hell that my friend said he “hoped to survive” in order to buy enough time for cancer researchers to find a cure for his at-the-moment virtually uncurable disease.

“There are still some things I don’t want to miss in my life,” he said, choking a bit as he spoke the words into his phone.

Hang in there, I told him; I couldn’t think of much else to say. Dealing with cancer is a mostly personal crusade, as much mental as physical, particularly when you know the odds don’t favor the outcome you want.

The conversation ended, the obligatory endof-call greetings were exchanged, and we both cursed his situation without swearing or crying or raising our voices.

I worked my way through the rest of the day, completing my regular tasks and booking future meetings on my calendar and discussing future stories for our magazine. And I went home to fill in my wife about the day’s events.

As the day wound down, I found myself in the bathroom again, staring at the same blemished face that had given me so much pain that morning.

And I decided that maybe I wouldn’t spend so much time looking into the mirror tomorrow, because the reflection looking back at me seemed to be pointing in the wrong direction.

BACK TALK: MORE CONSIGNMENT TROUBLE?

Last month, as neighbors began to call us about another potential consignment store scam, Advocate editor Rachel Stone checked into the accusations. Excerpts from her original post on the Back Talk East Dallas blog are below; to read the post in full and to comment, visit lakewood.advocatemag.com and search: Heavenly Consignments.

In the wake of the Red Cat scandal, another neighborhood consignment store owner is being accused of misleading her clients. Some clients say Lisa Massena of Heavenly Consignments on Garland Road accepted their consignments but never paid, even while admitting, in some cases, she sold the items.

“As far as I know, 90 percent of the people have been paid,” Massena says.

The only ones she hasn’t paid out are those who she cannot reach, she says. But Heavenly Consignments, which opened in August 2009, has an “F” rating from the Better Business Bureau because of two unanswered complaints. It has negative ratings on consumer websites. And several clients say she stiffed them.

Massena sent out a letter to clients stating that the business is closing because of her husband’s recent death, and clients should pick up their consignments. The letter states they will be paid within 45 days for anything that has sold. In the summer, Ellen Quinn of East Dallas says she consigned “a ton” of costume jewelry that had belonged to her grandmother to Heavenly Consignments. Six of the pieces were sterling silver, one with a pearl and one with an emerald chip.

“Of course, those were the ones that came up missing,” Quinn says.

When Quinn went to retrieve the jewelry, Massena told Quinn she couldn’t find it. Massena came up with some of the jewelry on a second visit, but the most valuable items were missing, and Massena didn’t have sales receipts for them, Quinn says, adding that she hasn’t been paid for the

jewelry or for two pieces of furniture Heavenly Consignments sold for her. Massena, however, says Quinn has been paid in full.

“She’s clearly lied to me,” Quinn says of Massena. “I don’t think I’m going to get a penny out of it.”

Another client, neighborhood resident Julia Woodard, says she brought antiques, including a shoeshine stand, to Heavenly Consignments.

“They told me it sold [around mid-October]. I said, ‘So where’s my check?’ ” she says.

Woodard says she is still trying to retrieve other consigned items that are now missing. Massena says it takes about 45 days from the time an item sells to the time the check is sent out. She admits that payments were slow after the store first opened, “and I apologize for that,” she says.

She is closing the store because she says it is too much to handle. Her husband was near death for two months, and she could not focus on the business. Massena resents the comparison to Red Cat, which closed without notice and is accused of selling clients’ consignments at estate sales and keeping the profits.

“I’m doing this the right way. I’m not closing in the middle of the night. I’m telling people to come get their stuff,” Massena says. “If you want to put a negative mark against me, I really don’t care because I lost my husband. I took care of him while he was sick with cancer for five years, and I had to take him off life support. We were married 30 years.”

“I was trapped in my neighborhood nearly all day. Thanks a lot, White Rock Marathon. I’m sick of it — it happens every year for a full day, plus several knock-off races doing the same thing. We live in this neighborhood. It is ours. This is our city. We need to make the decision-makers pay attention to our very legitimate complaints. Have you ever noticed the way people treat us when we try to stand up for ourselves on this issue?”

QUESTION OF THE MONTH

We asked our Facebook fans

WHAT’S SOMETHING NEW AND POSITIVE YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR THE NEW YEAR?

This is going to be our low-key, local year. Instead of big trips, it will be small indulgences to support the local community. More tiny dinner parties with friends, more cooking together, more day trips.

—MELISSA GROVE

As a human rights lawyer and activist, I’ll be joining the worldwide campaign to eradicate sexual violence toward women and children.

I’m going to help my dear Nigerian friends build a school in rural, middle-belt Nigeria. We broke ground last summer, and this year we hope to build so the Mary Penelope Academy can open in the fall of 2011.

BOOKSTORE ANNIVERSARY

Thank you for the article on Paperbacks

Plus [ Advocate Back Talk blog “Paperbacks Plus celebrates 36th anniversary”]. It is such a great store. I was volunteering at a library book sale last night, and one of the buyers was going on and on about how nice the owner is. I thought we were going to wind up forming a Paperbacks Plus fan club.

ONCOR TREE TRIMMING

This would be a positive change [ Advocate Back Talk blog, “Oncor to change treetrimming practice after meeting with Sen. Carona”] for the existing old stately trees if Oncor will really do this. Future butchering can be avoided if contractors would research the proper growth of trees. Just a suggestion for someone who wants to plant a tree: Go to the Dalas Arboretum and find that species in full growth and then take a glance at your area and visualize that tree in your yard. There are so many varieties of trees and shrubs to choose from. It just takes some research.

Good, I guess, but a little late for those of us whose trees have already been butchered. On the other hand, at least our power didn’t go out on the last high-wind day like it usually does.

—QUENTIN, VIA

If the residentswould just take care of their trees, Oncor wouldn’t have to do it. I hope they charge the residents individually for the tree trimming service they are providing.

FIGHTING TO MAKETHETRAILSSAFER

This story [“Enough is Enough”, December Advocate ] makes it sound like the tragic fatality on the Katy trail is the cyclist’s. The author labels the “speeding cyclist”, but why wasn’t the runner labeled as “irresponsible” or “erratic” for turning abruptly

without looking behind her? As far as I know, the cyclist hasn’t been charged with anything, and most stories I’ve seen acknowledge the runner bears much of the blame, so why does your story paint it in this light?

—WILSON, VIA

One thing I will say regarding Ted Barker’s position — families with children use the trails. Unfortunately, children are not going to stay on their side of the trail and understand all the rules associated with a hikeand-bike shared lane like this. As a cyclist, it is frustrating, but it is what it is. Folks view high speed cyclists as the one thing they can regulate off the trails, though the issue to me, as a cyclist, is that there aren’t dedicated bike lanes in Dallas and most roads are simply not safe to share with cars because Dallas folks also feel the road is for cars only, and at the end of the day, as a cyclist I will not play chicken with a two-ton machine. I’d rather be alive than right.

—BRIAN VIA

I agree that the wording in the story does imply fault with the cyclist. However, I don’t think we need to assign fault to either side of this tragedy. The Katy Trail incident is not representative of the problem that needs to be solved at White Rock; it simply brought the spotlight.

—STUART,

VIA

Editor’s note: The line about the cyclist hitting the runner wasn’t meant to imply fault. We didn’t want to ignore what happened on the trail in this story, since the accident brought the speed issue to the forefront, but we didn’t feel this story was the place to go into detail about the Katy Trail accident. Read what we had to say about that by searching “busy trails” at lakewood.advocatemag.com.

Small Budget, Small Space Big Improvement!

Maybe it’s the economy. Maybe it’s the rising costs of maintaining a large home. Whatever the reasons, homeowners are using their homes’ existing footprints to meet their changing needs, with practical ideas that could work in your home. . .

Reconsider the Use of Your Space

You can use almost any space in your home in any way you see t. Need a home o ce, a library, or a sunroom? Rather than incur the greater cost of expanding your home, consider reinventing your existing rooms. A formal dining room which now occupies prime real estate at the front of the home could become that ideal o ce space. A fourth bedroom, now vacated by your college student could become a sunroom. Or two bedrooms could be joined to create a second master suite, perfect for multi-generation families.

Turn Your Kitchen into a Social Hub

No longer is the kitchen merely used for cooking and serving meals; it’s now used for entertaining, lounging, homework, work, and even TV watching. No matter what your kitchen currently looks like, it can usually be transformed into the modern social center you want. It may mean moving walls and

adjoining rooms. O en the result is something even more satisfying than what you’ll nd in newer homes, because you’ve lived there and you’re intimately familiar with the ow, the useability, and even the storage areas. You can walk the remodeler through your home, describing how you want to retain the boundaries and intimacy you enjoy, while opening the space to create a more useable “great room”.

Connect the Indoors with the Outdoors

Being indoors in a comfortable environment feels intimate, safe, and cozy. Being outdoors gives us feelings of connectedness, expansiveness, and serenity. By bringing in light, and by connecting the visual design cues of indoor space to the outdoors, we can create the ultimate in comfort – spaces that provide the best feelings of both worlds. Sunrooms are an ideal way to do this, but it’s just as possible with kitchens, living rooms, and even master suites that open to your outdoor environment.

Create Atmosphere with Coordinated Details

ink of your home as a composition. Your nishes don’t need to be luxurious, but try to tie in subtle elements from room to room to improve the ow. The repetition of similar materials, colors, and textures will produce a more complex, yet integrated space that feels satisfying, engaging, and better reflects your personal style.

Remodeling within your home’s existing footprint can help you maximize your home’s current value while minimizing your expense. When feasible, it offers initial material and labor savings, as well as ongoing heating and cooling efficiencies. If you’d like to learn more about whether an addition or footprint remodel is the best solution for your home’s design challenge, just call us. We’ll be happy to schedule an informational visit.

You might recognize his face from “Good Morning Texas”, which airs at 9 a.m. weekdays on WFAA, or his voice from Texas Lottery or Taco Bueno commercials, or some Englishlanguage versions of Japanese anime films. Or maybe you’ve just seen him hanging around the White Rock area with his daughters. As busy as his schedule keeps him, performer extraordinaire R OB Mc cOLL uM was prepared to “move heaven and earth” for the opportunity to star in one of his favorite musicals, “The Drowsy c haperone”, which runs through Saturday, Jan. 8 at Theatre Three.

Did you always plan to be an actor or performer?

No. I acted in junior high and high school, and definitely had the bug, but I never knew you could do it for a living. So I took business classes at Trinity University in San Antonio — leave it to me to take business at a liberal university, huh? What was I thinking? I got to Dallas and took a job in sales and marketing. It was during that time that a group hired me to help market their actor’s showcase, and I got to know a little bit more about agents, casting directors and that world. I got an agent, and started doing some part-time work. I really liked it so much that I became a licensed stockbroker, which eventually allowed me more time for acting pursuits. And eventually, I was able to make a living on acting.

SO YOU CAN MAKE IT AS AN ACTOR HERE IN DALLAS?YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO TO HOLLYWOOD OR NEW YORK?

It was a complete surprise to me how many actors are here in Dallas. You won’t get those big glamorous roles if you stay in Dallas, but you can make a very good living as an actor. I always would try to convince the guys who got the parts I wanted that they were ready to go to LA and make it big! I was content trying to be the big fish in the little pond.

SO YOU NEVER WANTED TO MOVE AWAY TO DO THEATER IN THE BIG APPLE?

Well, my family is here. When I first got into this whole thing, I took some improv classes. I ended up marrying Krystal, the teacher. We had two girls, Manon and Lily, who are now 7 and 9. We are no longer married, but we get along wonderfully. She is also a pretty well-known actor who lives in this area.

ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT YOUR PART IN THE AWARD-WINNING MUSICAL, “THE DROWSYCHAPERONE”?

I am completely excited. I first discovered the musical when my wife brought home the soundtrack after she saw the show on Broadway. Every member of our family knows all the songs. The show is an absolute love letter to musicals and expresses the way we feel about them: As much as we love musicals, we — us theater types especially — love to make fun of them and how silly they can be with their schmaltzy songs and such this show allows us to comment on that, yet revel in it. I also love the idea that my children will be able to see this. They know all the music, and they will get to see their dad as “the man in chair”.

WHAT DOES THE “MAN IN CHAIR” ROLE ENTAIL?

He is a musical theater geek, the narrator and not a part of any of the musical numbers, which works out well because I don’t sing particularly well.

WITH YOUR GIG ON WFAA, IT MUST BE TOUGH TO MAKE TIME FOR THEATER, NO?

The director called me for the part because he remembered me from a role I auditioned for two years ago. During the audition, we talked about “The Drowsy Chaperone”, and he remembered that. Despite my busy schedule, when he called, I knew I would move heaven and earth to be able to do this.

HOWDID YOU WIND UP AS THE “GOOD MORNING TEXAS”CO-HOST?

About two years ago, they put out the call for auditions. In the beginning, we didn’t even know what it was for. As we got deeper into the audition process, I learned that the former co-host, Gary Cogill, was moving to another role at WFAA, and that I was trying out for GMT.

WHATDO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE JOB?

It is a great job, and I get to meet so many interesting people. Meeting Eddie Izzard, for me, was a huge thrill. I had a total nerd moment meeting C3PO.I’ve met wonderful authors like Daniel Silva and, recently, the two gentlemen from John F. Kennedy’s secret service team who wrote a book about the Kennedy assassination. Then there are all the local people doing great things with local businesses and nonprofits. I also like that the position has allowed me to get the word out about local theater. Since coming to GMT,I have tried to be a voice for the Dallas arts community. The quality of local productions and talent is amazing.

artist in residence

When he was offered an art-teaching job at St. John’s Episcopal in 1990, artist Martin Delabano gladly accepted, mostly because he wanted out of his job at the iron foundry, where he labored in close proximity to 3,000-degree metals and had once seen a man’s legs crushed by a cage of motor blocks. “It is hard, nasty, dangerous work,” he recalls. He had gone to school at St. John’s, and thought it would make a nice (safe) “transitional” job. “I remember thinking, ‘Hmm, middle schoolers, yeah right! I will be looking for another job in two years,’ ” he says. “Then I looked up and 10 years had passed. Turns out I love it.” Delabano, a sculptor of colorful expressionistic pieces, comes from a line of artists. His grandfather, whose inherited tools Delabano uses in his craft, was a woodworker. His father, Barney, was a staffer at the Dallas Museum of Art for 30 years and a painter. His parents’ art collections shaped his early interests. “I grew up in a house stuffed with paintings; drawings; and Pre-Columbian, African and New Guinea sculptures and baskets, which had a profound influence on me. I almost didn’t have the choice to not be an artist,” he says. Over the last couple of years, Delabano has taken up mandolin making, and he plays quite well (search his name on YouTube and hear for yourself). “I’ve played guitar since I was about 13, but I’d gotten bored with it. I was stale, and I wanted to learn something new.” For his talent, teaching (he also taught part-time at Brookhaven College for 18 years) and his avid commitment to the Carter Blood Center, he received the 2010 Distinguished Texas Artist Award. Delabano has donated about 21 gallons of blood to date. It started, he says, after he donated for a student with cancer. “They said I was good for platelets.” So he continues to give.

by donating to Baal Dan, a charity that cuts out the middle men and sends dollars directly to the poorest people in India. Richards Group employee Tanya Pinto founded the charity in 2006 after finding inspiration volunteering at Mother Theresa’s orphanage in Calcutta. She realized that charities in India typically only give a small percentage of donations to their causes. And a little bit of money can go a long way. Through Baal Dan, $1 can feed a child for one day, and $365 can send a child to school for one year. More information is available at baaldan.com or 214.566.8926.

working dogs

Paige Anderson is a talent agent who represents “rock stars” with names like Butters, Rookie, Othello and Oreo. They might not trash hotel rooms, but they’re still animals. Anderson owns an agency called Beast, and her critter clients have appeared in print ads for Neiman Marcus and Pier One Imports as well as TV spots for PetSmart and Western Union. Anderson was a photo stylist for eight years, and she’s been an animal-lover all her life. At home in Forest Hills, she has four rescue dogs, and she usually has one or two foster pups, too. In 2007, she realized she could combine two things she loves and make a niche for herself. Anderson describes a recent commercial where the producer wanted a dog to take a bag of potato chips from an actor’s hand, carry it in its mouth to a dog bed, drop the chips, and lie down in the bed. “That’s a lot of behaviors that have to be all in one sequence for the shot,” she says. “People don’t realize how much goes into it.” Anderson says she realized early on that it’s better to call for the behaviors producers expect rather than calling for a certain breed. Most of the dogs she represents have agility training because they’re focused, obedient and svelte. Just as runway models have to be skinny, so do canine models. “Most people’s pets are overweight,” she says. “I’ve had to tell people their dog is too fat.” Just because a dog is photogenic doesn’t mean it can be a model. Anderson says she receives about 10 emails a day from people asking her to represent their pets. Most of them are rejected. Anderson also represents cats, including Cadbury, who stars in a hilarious new Western Union commercial. She works with lizards, skunks, monkeys, bunnies and horses. But she draws the line at alligators: “My only rule is, I won’t work with anything that can eat me.” —Rachel

HealtHy Home cooking

Darlene rosen bustles arounD tHe small kitcHen inside her Junius Heights home. An enchilada frittata simmers on the stove, filling the air with the smell of roasted Hatch chilies, onions and chicken sausage. This is where Rosen feels most at home. “Since I love it, time disappears,” she says. About two years ago, Rosen turned her passion into an online catering business, Honey Girl Kitchen, preparing meals using organic ingredients and hormone-free meats. From orders for individuals to those topping 75, Rosen does it all in her own kitchen. The business grew out of her neighborhood playgroup. Other moms loved Rosen’s food so much they started asking her to cook for birthday parties, baptisms and other family events. Most of the recipes Rosen uses came from her mother. “I never tasted Hamburger Helper until I was out of the house,” Rosen says. “She never cooked out of a box.” Along with regular menu choices, Rosen features a different item each month — wild mushroom shepherd’s pie for January.

In 2012 Rosen plans to start operating out of a food truck downtown, offering home-cooked meals during lunchtime. For now, she’s savoring her time in the kitchen.

It’s difficult to sum up the state of cheap wine as we celebrate the Advocate’s ninth annual Cheap Wine extravaganza and $10 Wine Hall of Fame. More people than ever are drinking cheap wine, thanks to the recession, but I tasted way too much flabby and dull $10 wine over the past year, especially from California. Producers, apparently, were throwing anything in a they could sell for $10 or less, regardless of quality, in order to lure customers.

So call the 2011 Hall of Fame a mixed bag. We four wines, but also lost several: La Ferme de Gicon, a red blend from the Rhone, which was lacking this year; vini merlot from Bulgaria and the Lockwood sauvignon blanc, which apparently aren’t available here anymore; and Meridian’s chardonnay, which tasted nothing like last year’s vintage and neatly summarized California’s problems.

The new members are: Chateau Barat, a French rosé that is fruity and minerally; the Casamatta Toscana, perhaps the best $10 sangiovese I’ve ever had; Chateau Boisson, a white French wine with a little lemon and a lot of minerality; and the Anne Aimee Muller-Thurgau from Oregon, a sweetish wine that is also spicy.

Here’s the rest of this year’s Hall of Fame, all available at Central Market: CNW, and a chenin blanc-viognier blend, Chenin Vio, from Vinum Cellars in California. One caveat: These wines are not $10 everywhere, and the CNW seems to be in short supply.

a white wine from Sicily, that is just one of almost a dozen Sicilian wines that cost $10 or less and offer spectacular value.

and especially the petite sirah. the Spanish sparkling wine, which comes in brut (dry), extra dry (sweeter than brut) and rosé.

TAQUERIA LOS ALTOS FOR LUNCH

12.05 I finally went to the (sort-of) newly opened Fuzzy’s Tacos and it lives up to the hype — good, cheap, fast food. It would be perfect if not for the crowds at peak hours, especially lunch. Don’t get me wrong — I am glad they are finding success, but it got me thinking about alternatives for those afternoons you just don’t feel like dealing with the mob.

For example, nearby at Abrams and Northwest Highway, tucked behind a billiards bar and bound by burglar bars, is Taqueria Los Altos, where you can order the $4.99 taco lunch special that includes three tacos with your choice of meat plus rice and beans, plus free chips with a selection of mild to hot salsas. The place is not as trendy as Fuzzy’s, and you probably won’t see all of your friends there, but it’s clean, roomy and authentic. If it’s dinnertime, stick to Fuzzy’s; Los Altos is open only on weekdays from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. and closed at dinnertime. Weekend hours run until 4 p.m. 6012 Abrams, 214.361.6769.

KROGER REMODEL INCLUDES SUSHI, OLIVE BAR

11.22 T he Kroger at Northwest Highway and Plano, bordering the Dixon-Branch neighborhoods, recently was revamped — it looks more like the fancy Kroger at Mockingbird-Greenville now, but not quite as big. The first thing I noticed following the redo, aside from the colorful flower section, is the cute little sushi bar staffed full-time (or at least every time I’ve been in) with sushi chefs. The Kroger sushi bar offers dumplings, kelp salad, edamame, and cooked and raw fish sushi, but nothing overly adventurous. I picked up a spicy tuna roll ($4.99), a nigiri-style devil roll with salmon ($8.99) and a tempura fried shrimp New York crunch roll. The chefs prepared them fresh while I stood there — that gives me warm fuzzies about the food. By the way, the Kroger remodel also features an olive bar right behind the sushi station. Build your own olive or antipasti platter for $7.99 per pound. The other thing I’ve always loved about Kroger is its decent organic and vegetarian food selection, much of which can be found in the same spot it was before the remodel (the left-hand side of the store when you walk in, near the produce). As soon as they stock the wine and beer, this place will have everything.

GARDEN

CAFÉ NEWS

10.24 The patio plants are looking good — beets and spinach are sprouting, and the folks at Garden Cafe have planted Swiss chard, kale, collard greens and romaine lettuce to use in the upcoming season. And they have a new chef on staff. Mark Wootton has worked for Social and Central 214 where he learned from our friend, celebrity Chef Blythe Beck.

A collection of neighborhood gems th

At A re better th An the ‘best’

Creating a “best of” list isn’t really our speed. At the end of the day, who’s to say what is truly “best”? Highlighting one neighborhood shop, restaurant or experience as better than another based on votes or our (ahem) expert opinion tends to be subjective, and it doesn’t allow us to fully appreciate the countless gems in Lakewood.

instead of deClaring the “best” this month, we’re calling attention to the things we love about Lakewood — the kinds of things that wouldn’t make it on a broader “best of” list because those of us who live here are among the few who know they exist and who understand their worth.

t his story is only the beginning of our list . We’ll be highlighting the things we love weekly on the Back Talk blog; visit lakewood.advocatemag.com . We want to hear about the things you love, too. Send an email to thingswelove@advocatemag.com , and you might find your description of a neighborhood gem on our website or in the magazine.

We have no beef with Starbucks, but it’s nice to have our own flavor in the coffee scene. Pearl Cup, at N. Henderson and McMillan, is known for its signature latte. And White Rock Coffee opened a drivethrough kiosk at the northeast corner of Mockingbird and Abrams. Legal Grounds in the Lakewood Shopping Center has been around the longest and is significantly improved under new ownership. It’s a good place to sit and stay awhile.

1 Backyard chickens

Dogs are great — man’s best friend and all — but can they make your breakfast? Several White rock area residents keep chickens, which produce an average of one egg each per day, as pets.

“But wait,” you might say. “Chickens aren’t pets; they’re dinner.” Try telling that to neighbor Brenda Sanchez, who recently spent cash and time treating one of her cluckers for an eye infection. “Sure, we should have just eaten Fuzzy, but instead I paid $150 at the vet,” Sanchez admits. “We kept Fuzzy in the house and nursed her back to health, giving her antibiotics and eye drops for a week. I even snuck the bird into the elementary school one day because my daughter was

the only one in the family who could get those drops in.” note: once you’ve named a chicken Fuzzy, you most certainly cannot have it for dinner.

Bill and Barbara Katz, frontiers of the urban chicken movement in our neighborhood, aren’t typical farmers either. “a hen will produce eggs for two or three years. Once they stop, usually a farmer would end it, but I just don’t have the heart to,” Bill Katz says. To the Katz family, chicken farming is about more than just eggs.

The“chickenculture”ismorethan a hobby or fad, Katz says, but a way of life that sets the “chicken people” apart from the crowd. “Most people bring wine to parties; we bring a dozen eggs — you get used to it.”

A LIFE IN bloom

52 JANUARY 2011 lakewood.advocatemag.com

A depressed retiree suffering

from a degenerative muscular disorder finds hope amid the flowers

Since he moved to Tyler, Texas, from the White Rock area in 2005, he has logged more than 40,000 miles driving to and from his volunteer job (about 200 miles per round trip).

Seems excessive for a gig that doesn’t pay, but David Gary says what he has gained from his more than 3,000 hours at the Dallas Arboretum is worth a king’s ransom.

It started when Gary had all but given up on life.

At age 28, after a tour in Vietnam, he was diagnosed with a slow-progressing form of muscular dystrophy.

“It didn’t impair me too much at the time,” he says. “I could get around fine with a cane.”

He worked for 30-some years at a photography company he owned with his brother (mostly in the darkroom, Gary says, because he was awkward around people). In 2002, they sold the business and retired, after which Gary commenced to sit on the couch, watch TV and sink further each day into an utter funk.

“Something happened in retirement — a lack of purpose. Like the end of work meant the end of life in some way, or at least a large part of it.”

One warm day, Gary’s wife, Linda, attempted to rouse him from depression with a trip to the Dallas Arboretum, which was close to the couple’s White Rock area home. Gary was no stranger to the Arboretum; he’d photographed countless weddings amid the gorgeous gardens, but something about this particular trip touched him and changed the course of his life.

As he sat on a bench and watched the Arboretum’s tram tour pass, his wife nudged him.

“She said, ‘See, you could do something like that,’ ” Gary says.

But since he knew nothing about foliage or horticulture, save reluctantly mowing his lawn once every couple of weeks, he says he verbally dismissed the idea, even as he was quietly considering it. In fact, upon returning home to his couch, he couldn’t stop thinking about it.

“I didn’t know enough,” he recalls of his thoughts. “I couldn’t walk well, and I was no good at talking to people …”

Though he had plenty of excuses not to do it, he returned to the arboretum days later and asked a tram driver how he found his job. The driver directed him to the volunteer office, where he met Cris Emrich, volunteer coordinator.

“I went in and told her all the reasons I thoughtI’dmake a terriblevolunteer,”he quips, “and without so much as looking at my cane, she says, ‘Good. We need people.’ Then she gave me paperwork, including a thick manual outlining the arboretum’s collections.”

reflecting on that day in May 2003, Emrich, who now works in marketing, says she found a gem in Gary.

“Some people look at disability; others look for ability. If you are turned off by a disability, you might miss out on a great possibility,” she says, adding that it didn’t matter to her

that he had a lot to learn when it came to plant life.

“I could see he was a good man with a good heart, and that is the kind of people we want here.”

Gary spent hours and long nights poring over the manual, absorbing as much information as he could about features at theArboretum.

His first passenger was a tourist from NewYork City. She enjoyed his tour, she told him, and she even laughed at his joke. The sadness and shyness that had plagued Gary disappeared. He continued to study, and he learned to garden. In a way, gardening was similar to working in the darkroom, he says. The way you coax beautiful plants from the ground is similar to the way an image emerges from a developing photograph, he says.

Today, he lives in Tyler, where his wife accepted a teaching job in 2005. He gets around by wheelchair these days, but thathasn’tslowedhim.Emrichsays that “need causes a person to become creative,” and that was evident in Gary’s case. He designed and built a wheelchairfriendly garden in Tyler.

“The decomposed granite pathways are perfect for gardening on wheels,” he says.

Gary still drives the tram tours at least twice a month — he just slides from the chair to the vehicle seat.

“The MD hasn’t affected my ankles or calves yet,” he says.

In addition to continuing to log volunteer hours at the Arboretum, Gary lends his time speaking to groups, including aspiring gardeners, retirees and veterans.

“People who know me now would never believe I spent most of my life being shy,” he says. “I think that when they see what I have been able to do, they see that they can do something similar.”

Emrich says Gary’s case is evidence thatvolunteerismenricheslives, and maybe even saves and extends them.

“So many people have worked hard all their lives, they retire, they go home, they sit down, and they die,” Emrich says.

Volunteering, giving, doing and finding a passion can keep you alive, she says. Gary is living proof of that, and through his work as a tour guide, his late blooming gardeningprowess, andhiscircuitspeaking, Emrich says, “he makes people believe.”

TheSamuellGrandTennisCenter was built in the 1960s with 20 courts, and it was a happening place until the late ’80s.

In 1965 Dallas hosted the Davis Cup, aninternationalteamtennistournament founded in 1899. ArthurAshe had just turned 22, and he was the first AfricanAmerican on the United States Davis Cup team.

No country club in Dallas would allow a black man to play on its courts. So the tournament was held at the Samuell Grand Tennis Center, which was brand new at the time.

In the opening match, Ashe was “near flawless” in a win against Rafael Osuna ofMexico, the DallasMorningNews reported. The crowd was standing-room only. In the end, Australia won the tournament, but it gave Dallas a place in tennis history.

The team at Samuell Grand would like to raise enough money to resurface the courts and plan a major tournament to commemorateAshe’sperformanceon the 50th anniversary, in August 2015.

But for now, they are focused on the fundamentals.

Stoney’s Fine Wines recently moved from its Lower Greenville spot to Oram and Skillman, and will hold two free wine tastings on Saturdays in January, both thematic: “Out with the Old, In with the New” on Jan. 8, and “Affordable White Burgundies” on Jan. 22, both from 4-7 p.m. Call 214.953.3067 for information.

In other wine news, Times Ten Cellars (6324 Prospect) will reinstate its Wednesday night pizza in January with wood-fired pizza from Il Cane Rosso , beginning at 6 p.m.

A Lower Greenville resident is on a mission to convince people his crumb cake is the tastiest in town. “The name of the game for me is ‘just try it’,” says J-Stephen Sadler, owner of Crumbzz 4 “Once you’ve tried it, you’re hooked.” Sadler once owned a café in New York, eventually selling it because, as he says, he wanted to have a life again. He put aside his baking hat until he ran into a fan of his cakes at DFW airport. In March 2010, he started rebuilding his company, but this time built it online instead of opening a shop. His crumb cakes and toppers (mini cakes) come in three flavors: cinnamon streusel, chocolat de la terre and fruit of the seasons. Dallas residents receive free shipping on their orders. Sadler’s cakes also are sold locally at The Cultured Cup , Maudee’s Café and Tea Room and the Four Seasons Resort and Club For information call 214.541.9665 or visit crumbzz.com. —ElizabE th Knight En

C ELEBRATING THE HISTORY OF THE KJV

Happy Birthday to you, King James Bible.

Four hundred years ago this year, the Authorized Version was printed. It was authorized by King James, who had ascended to the English throne in 1603 after the death of the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I. James I, formerly James VI of Scotland, the son of Mary Queen of Scots, inaugurated the Jacobean Era (from Jacob, which is the Hebraic form of the name James) by selecting 47 Church of England scholars to work on a new English translation of the Bible. They worked from 1604-1611, producing a translation that has sold 5 billion copies in these four hundred years, and has shaped both the faith and the language of the faith for the faithful for all this time.

Along with Shakespeare’s works, the King James Bible has set the standard for how a language might appeal to commoners and elitists at the same time. The beauty of it, the poetic sound of the words chosen, rings in our heads so clearly we have a hard time accepting more precise, duller translations.

Consider the Shepherd’s Psalm (23). When I perform funerals or memorial services, I often invite those gathered to join me in reciting it. They only know it in the King James Version; and it’s low treason to forcefeed them something modern.

I normally prefer the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) to the better-selling but wooden New International Version (NIV); but listen to the differences of these to the KJV in just Psalm 23. “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing” (NIV), lacks much compared to “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want” (KJV). “Even though I walk through the darkest valley” (NRSV and NIV) feels less ominous and therefore also less comforting than “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death” (KJV). The clincher though is “I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long” (NRSV), which may make better sense of the Hebrew but offers little at the graveside compared to “I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (KJV).

There are King James complications due to changing word meaning over time. “Let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ” (Phil. 1:27, KJV), doesn’t just refer to speech as we might read it today. The NRSV better catches the sense of conduct with “Live your

life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.”

Perhaps the most astonishing aspect of the King James Bible achievement is that a committee produced it. Little-known divines put themselves to the task, putting the task before their egos. They emerged from cloister with a marvel that endures. Thomas Jefferson authored the Declaration of Independence, and he chafed under every recommended edit by the Congress that set itself to act as a committee of the whole. Not so with the King James Bible. The final concord among the scholars is all we know, as they left no minutes of their meetings.

Any Bible we have today is a translation

of translations, including the King James. No original manuscripts of the Bible’s authors have survived the hardships of history.

A few other salient facts: The first 39 books of the Christian Bible were written in Hebrew and are shared with Jews, who arrange the order somewhat differently (Torah, Prophets, Writings versus Torah, Writings, Prophets). The New Testament was written primarily in Greek. St. Jerome’s Latin Vulgate translation aided King James’s translators, along with previous English efforts by John Wycliffe and William Tyndale.

No translation is perfect, and ye people of biblical faith believe that the words of the Bible translations we have may render effectively God’s Word to the world by the power of God’s Spirit. Some translations more than others, though, eloquently carry the sound of the divine to the ear of the human.

The King James Bible still tops that list.

THE CAR BREAK-IN RUINED THE NIGHT OUT.

“I had just gone out to dinner with my kids to Luby’s,” Jay Spence says of the night he became a victim.

The Victim: Jay Spence

The Crime: Burglary of a motor vehicle

Date: Thursday, Nov. 11

Time: Between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Location: 6400 block of Mockingbird

Luby’s is only a short drive, maybe a mile, from his Briarcreek Lane home. The cafeteria-style eatery seemed like a nice choice for his family that night. A chicken-fried steak with mashed potatoes or a Luann platter might be nice. Maybe they’d grab a piece of pie or cake for dessert. He and his children spent maybe 30 minutes dining before heading back out to the car to return home.

“I parked in a really well-lit area,” Spence recalls. “I came out about 7:30, and saw the radio had been taken and that wires were hanging out.”

The burglars had pried open the front passenger door, and then tried to access the ignition to take the car. In the process, they ruined the starter and damaged the steering column.

Police told Spence that this was the second car break-in they had responded to at that location recently. Spence estimated the loss would set him back a couple thousand dollars. In addition to the stereo, the burglar also made off with some headphones and an iPhone charging cable.

“I feel really lucky because in the back of the Tahoe, I had my $1,000 laptop hidden in the rear of the car with all the pictures of my kids,” he says. “And I’m lucky to still have the car.”

Dallas Police Lt. Mackie D. Ham of the Northeast Patrol Division says that in most instances it takes only about 30 seconds or so to break into a car, and fewer if they break the window.

“Most of these criminals walk the parking lots looking into vehicles,” he says. “When they spot items inside of the car such as a laptop or other item, they then break out the window or pop the lock on the door. This only takes a few seconds.”

The easiest prevention method is to not leave any items inside.

“Criminals do not readily stand out. They dress like everyone else, so therefore they blend in and hope that they are not noticed. When they are breaking into a vehicle, they will stand by the door and act as if they are the owner and are just about to unlock the car They try to bring very little attention to themselves. When no one is looking, they will punch the door lock or quickly break the widow.Once inside of the vehicle, they usually take less than a minute or so to get what they want. We have actually had undercover officers watch these criminals as they break into vehicles, and sometimes it is so fast that the officers cannot readily tell if they actually broke into the vehicle or used a key.”

YOU COUNTTH e UNDe RGROUNDRUMBLINGS ( AND I DO )

The mayoral election is just five months away, yet there has been very little news surrounding it.

We’ve got one candidate, Jim Moore, and he is (as even he will admit) relatively unknown. That so little has happened so close to the election — even a local election — is increasingly rare. It seems that as soon as one election ends, the campaign starts for the next one.

Yet the mayoral campaign hasn’t started yet, and the reason is simple: The two leading candidates haven’t said whether they’re going to run. Mayor Park Cities has been acting so coy for so long about running for reelection that I half expect someone to cast him as the ingénue in a Broadway play, and then he can flitter his eyebrows for the run of the show.

Meanwhile, M Streets councilwoman Angela Hunt, who is thought to be the leading anti-Leppert candidate, hasn’t said anything, either.

Because, as long as Leppert and Hunt haven’t said what they’re going to do, no one else is going to say what they’re going to do, either. It’s kind of silly to say you’re going to run for mayor, spend a lot of time and money, and then watch as everyone ignores you after the incumbent and his arch-enemy say they’re going to run.

Complicating matters further is that Leppert and his cronies in the city’s ruling elite have already designated the mayor’s successor if Leppert decides not to run. He’s Mike Rawlings, the former Pizza Hut chief executive who became president of the Dallas Park Board last year. I met Rawlings years ago (though I doubt he’ll

to raise the property tax rate in August, and he probably doesn’t want to have to deal with any more rebellion like that.

But if Leppert runs, it will be mostly because it doesn’t look like there are any jobs that fit the high-flying profile he has created for himself, and not just because Kay Bailey Hutchison is going to be a senator for at least another couple of years. Which, of course, is the job for which Leppert has been angling since he was elected mayor.

remember being interviewed by a reporter for a trade magazine), and he’s Leppert Mark II, though without the mayor’s charm and yes, I’m being facetious.

In other words, Rawlings, if he runs instead of Leppert, will have Leppert’s political and financial support, so it would be more or less like running against Leppert.

So is Leppert going to run? I think so, even if he doesn’t especially want to be mayor any more. For one thing, Leppert has done most of what he set out to do, including winning the Trinity and hotel referendums. For another, he suffered his first major defeat when the council voted

But the main reason there isn’t anything else for him to do is that the Republican party lurched rightward while Leppert was mayor. Leppert has been a Chamber of Commerce Republican, which means he cares more about doing bidness than about ideology. But these days, ideology is the currency of the GOP, and Leppert’s record as mayor is not very Tea Party. He spends money, for one thing, and his stance on social issues is remarkably progressive. The city of Dallas offers insurance to unmarried partners; how will that play with the new GOP? That leaves only one other question: Will Hunt run? I haven’t much thought so, if only because she is a new mother, and who has a baby a year before running for mayor? But I keep seeing signs that she may run anyway, including a highdollar fundraiser in November. “Thank you, Angela, for giving all of Dallas a voice,” read the invitation, and that seems a bit much for someone who is running only for reelection to the council.

So good luck to anyone else who wants to run for mayor. I think you’ll need it.
