STAY CLASSY, DALLAS
Pedestrian friendly doesn’t necessarily mean friendly pedestrians
I keep seeing on television that Dallas is becoming an urban mecca, a place where it’s easy and fun to walk everywhere. Well, almost everywhere. OK, maybe between the car and the house, and vice versa, as well as inside NorthPark Center.
Anyway, the point is it’s not all that unusual — or at least it’s no longer out of the question — to see a real, live pedestrian on a Dallas street these days. You know, the type of sophisticated, sleek pedestrian looking to cross the street or walk from one retail location to another just like in all of those TV commercials for new cars.
All of this is pretty typical in large cities. In New York, pedestrians basically have the right of way, and drivers know to beware of people walking everywhere, ignoring street lights and signs at will. The same is true in Chicago, in Boston, in Washington, D.C., in San Francisco — all places with dense urban development and a city environment that favors walking from here to there.
One of these days, we may get there in Dallas, but I’m not thinking that day will occur before I’m fitting myself for a flash-fried resting place in a pine box.
I did, however, encounter a single said pedestrian on a city street the other day. This bearded walker had a backpack and seemed content to be traversing the city afoot, at least in as much as I could tell from my vantage point in the driver’s seat of my car.
It was late in the day, and I had on my wrap-around, cool-a-few-years-ago sunglasses. I was sitting at the stoplight, patiently waiting for the light to turn green.
The street wasn’t crowded. This guy was the only dude around, in fact.
So I was surprised when, as he passed along the crosswalk in front of my generally unremarkable vehicle (a Mini Cooper), he decided to salute me after what he probably assumed had been a hard day for both of us.
Only his idea of a salute was a little risqué for a PG-oriented magazine, and it was lacking a couple of fingers that typically denote an indication of respect.
He was rather blasé about the whole thing as he crossed in front of me, too. He stopped precisely in the center of my car’s hood, turned intentionally toward me, pulled out the digit of respect, and made it clear he wasn’t “pointing” at the car next to me or the one behind me — no, this salute was clearly intended for me.
Then, just as deliberately, he holstered the weapon, turned back in the direction he was headed, and crossed the street in plenty of time to beat the signal change.
I have to admit the whole thing caught me off-guard, and I was glad my reflective sunglasses hid the at-the-moment bulbous whites of my eyes.
I thought about reaching for my opencarry weapon until I remembered I don’t have one, for that exact reason. I considered rolling forward a bit to ensure he knew I wanted to provide a salutation of my own. And I wondered if I should have rolled down the window and given him some directions about the next place he could go.
But by the time all of this had floated through my brain, the light turned green, and the driver behind me also seemed to believe I was in need of a salute, this time of the audible kind.
So I slid through the intersection and continued on my way home, marveling at the wonders of living in what is becoming a truly urban city.

SURVEY SAYS: WIDE SWATH OF OPINIONS ON LAKE HIGHLANDS TOWN CENTER
“I think these are key, critical answers for people who are clinging to the original concept – the market is simply not drawing young professionals and upscale condo buyers, for any number of reasons. If they were, the Lake Highlands Town Center would have been built years ago. Let’s be flexible on what we can realistically get built out in our neighborhood and not be dogmatic about this.”
LHDad0206
“The money went to the DART station, building the fountain, and the streets and other utility improvements. We chose to invest in those things believing that the developer was going to build a high-density mixed-use development. We would not have chosen to spend the money if we knew that it was going to be an average suburban grocery store-anchored strip center.”

Flying furballs
Atop Flag Pole Hill on a Sunday morning, a commanding voice interrupts pleasant picnic-table banter.
“Everyone out of the shade to do Antar patrol,” trainer Melissa Sheehan shouts. “Places!”
Members of the No Big Woof Flyball team, uniformed in fluorescent yellow shirts, rise and form a wide perimeter around a small-scale obstacle course.
Antar the whippet-Labrador mix is something of an “escape artist,” team member Howard Jackson explains.
“She doesn’t mean to run away. She just sort of wants to take a victory lap to celebrate being unleashed. She usually
only does it on the first run.”
At the starting line, Antar’s tail is a frantically ticking metronome, yet the newbie remains razor-focused. At her handler’s command she sprints and clears four hurdles en route to her destination — a box featuring a spring-loaded pad that, when pressed by paw, releases a tennis ball.
In a single motion the dog snatches the spherical prize, pivots and darts back to her expectant owner, Aafke Brouwer, a local artist who joined the team last spring.
Cheers erupt from the outer circle. Treats are awarded.
In actual competition, Antar would be part of a four-dog relay team. Those
who drop balls or miss hurdles have to restart, forfeiting valuable seconds. The fastest foursomes win or move on to the next round.
Antar is fast and driven by an obsession with balls. Whippets are bred for speed.
But this is no elitist flyball organization.
“Melissa allows every dog on the team. There’s a dog with three legs there’s little Bandit.” Brouwer gestures toward a dachshund-mix whose legs are no more than 2-inches long.
Another member calls Bandit a secret weapon, because hurdles are lowered to accommodate a team’s shortest member.
Jackson’s dog Huck isn’t as fast as

Antar or team member Angela Miles’ Staffordshire bull terriers, a breed born sturdy and built for swiftness.
But the silky amber-and-white Australian shepherd-mix is diligent and eager to please.
Jackson, a Lake Highlands resident, happened upon the flyball practice three years ago while walking Huck, then a skittish and fearful recent rescue. They returned the next week to the beginner session, which precedes team practice each Sunday.
“Huck wouldn’t even let people pet him before,” Jackson says. “He had no confidence, no ball drive. Melissa had

to find out what motivated him. Turns out treats make him tick, but it took a year.”
Since starting flyball, Huck is a new animal, Jackson says.
“It’s been so rewarding to watch him grow into the dog that he is today through coaching and socializing at practice every week.”
Coach Sheehan started 20 years ago, looking for something to do with her Jack Russell terrier Jake.
She is the dog whisperer, the team members concur.
“Most of the old-timers have been through more than one dog with Melissa,” says Nancy Howse, whose border collie Moss is a veteran flyballer.
With any breed, she can glean success. That doesn’t always mean winning.
No Big Woof has two competition teams: Dogs at Work and Dogs Under Construction.
Sheehan points out that they have the most diverse breed roster in the entire United Flyball League International.
“We are the street team,” Jackson quips.
But this lovable band of misfits is gritty and hardworking enough to steal the show at events.
“People start out watching the fastest teams, but they wind up watching the interesting ones,” Howse says. “We are interesting — the whole place stops just to watch Bandit.”
Still these dogs and owners are serious when it comes to training and competition.
“It is not easy to make a perfect run,” Howse says. “Timing is important. Avoiding collisions and false starts.”
No Big Woof-ers are driven by a rewarding combination of hard work and recreation, she says.

American dog
While his humans aren’t exactly sure of his breed, they do know that Russell is an All-American dog that overcame a rough upbringing. He ended up in the Lake Highlands home of Taylor Graetz after he was rescued from the street as a puppy. Now he’s content to spend time with his humans and is always quick to pass out puppy kisses. “Look at that face, how can you not love him?” Graetz says. Readers do love Russell, naming him the winner of the 2015 Advocate Pet Contest out of 614 votes.

Bloodbath and beyond
Interview with writer, producer, actor David Park
David Park’s early experiences in Lake Highlands — writing for the high school newspaper, taking Nancy Poynter’s drama classes and working at Premiere Video — helped shape the person he is today, a thriving writer, actor and producer. While not yet a household name, the ‘98 Lake Highlands High School grad is sinking his teeth into Hollywood. Plus, he gets paid to do fun things, which is his personal definition of success. His first feature movie, a humorous horror called “Bloodsucking Bastards” hits theaters and Video On Demand this month. From his car — idling outside a Los Angeles studio where he has a meeting later — Park talks about the new film and discusses his past, passions and plans.
22 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com SEPTEMBER 2015
David Park visited Dallas last spring for the 10th annual Texas Frightmare Weekend, where his movie “Bloodsucking Bastards” premiered: Photo by Danny Fulgencio
Let’s start with your most-current venture, “Bloodsucking Bastards.” It feels at first like a typical workplace comedy, but it becomes atypical very quickly. Vampire takeover. All-out bloodbath. “Shaun of the Dead” meets “Office Space.” I belong to a comedy group called Dr. God [they perform all over the country and produce TV/film content] and we co-wrote and acted in the movie. It has a couple of bigger stars, like Fran Kranz, who you might have seen as the goofball in “Cabin in the Woods.” Pedro Pascal, Red Viper on “Game of Thrones,” plays the lead bad guy. It was just awesome to get him on board. He came on the heels of “GOT” [following Red Viper’s brutal fictional demise] and we shot the whole movie in 18 days. There is Joey Kern from “Super Troopers” and “Cabin Fever” and Joel Murray from “Mad Men.” Murray, who [like brother Bill Murray], is droll and hilarious, is also well known in the
improv community. Female lead Emma Fitzpatrick is great and a has a real pedigree in the horror genre. I play Dave, a pushover who gets bullied around the office, a real dork with a troubled cat named Puddles. Without giving too much away, I think people will enjoy seeing a shift happen for my character who gets pushed too far.
You are on a TV show too, right?
Right. The TV show MOCKpocolypse is on AXS TV, the station owned by Mark Cuban. Neil [Garguilo] and I executive produce it, and the whole Dr. God troop is in it. It’s in the same talking-heads genre as VH1’s “Best Week Ever,” but it’s about music. There’s been two seasons and a new cycle starts this month.
Have you met Cuban?
He’s a little busy with “Shark Tank” and the Mavericks and a billion other companies for direct contact, but he is involved in
every aspect of what goes on the channel.
You approach your craft from all angles — writing, producing, acting. What is your favorite of those?
It’s hard to say. Performing live provides such immediate gratification. I spent time sailing with the Second City Tour Company doing live shows for cruise passengers. Second City is where a lot of great comedians got their start [think Bill Murray, Amy Poehler]. I had a hand in the production, and I really enjoy affecting the big picture. When you do something for screen, you work more and wait longer but the payoff of seeing the final product is overwhelmingly awesome. One of my favorite things has been seeing “Bloodsucking Bastards” in a theater full of people — like when it screened here at Frightmare. The hilarity is infectious. This movie is a dish best served shared. I recommend watching it with a crowd. But, yeah, I love doing it all. It helps to see all sides. All of us in the group, we all

wear a lot of hats regarding production and performance.
When did you know you wanted to spend your life entertaining people?
I’ve always been drawn to this. My parents were incredibly supportive and nurtured my creativity. I acted and took classes from the great retired drama teacher Nancy Poynter at LHHS. I worked and interned at the Kitchen Dog Theater in Dallas — at the time I did not think about how special it was that managing director [and former LHHS teacher Tim Johnson took such a serious approach to local theater. And working at Premiere Video in East Dallas was a big part of my education. The owner, Sam Wade, turned me on to these wonderful obscure movies. I used to write a segment for the school paper called “Five minutes with a Wildcat” where I would highlight different students and interview them, with a comedic twist. I think I always knew the goal was to get paid for doing these types of things. The Internet age has sort of caused an explosion of improv and comedy and made it easier to find an audience.
Do you miss Lake Highlands?
My mom [Lynne Park] still lives there. She just visited LA. I actually just put her on a plane back home. I miss family, though my sister [Emily Park Dragun] now lives in Kentucky. I hope to come back for the release of the movie Sept. 4 and see it with a neighborhood audience. Can’t wait for ya’ll to see it.
Anything else in the works, either professionally or personally — significant other, kids, etc.?
Dr. God is working on a pilot presentation that I am really excited about but can’t say much about. I’m working on several other movies. I do some hosting on my own. I’m starring in a series of promos for cable TV channels Pivot and WE tv. I’m not married, and no kids yet. Maybe once I slow down a bit on the career. Why, are you asking me out?

There is the nifty tagline, “RESP3CT TRADITION,” printed across smartly designed cans, the contents of which are universally praised by aficionados who have sipped
them and the 50-plus retailers and restaurateurs who peddle them. A group of investors from Lake Highlands recently provided enough capital to put makers 3 Nations Brewing Co. on the map.
No matter how good the inventory — and 3 Nations microbrew, by all accounts, is the top-tier product of extensive craft brewing expertise — one cannot sell aggressively or produce properly without startup money.

3 Nations Brewing Company investors John Morrow, Brooks Purnell, Steve Stutsman, John Royer and David Solomon with brewmaster Gavin Secchi: Photos by Rasy Ran
THE STORE IN LAKE HIGHLANDS
That’s where Lake Highlands’ John Royer, John Morrow, Brooks Purnell, Steve Stutsman and David Solomon come in. A few of them already co-own a hydroponic farm in Austin that grows lettuce sold in organic grocery stores. Royer likes to say that they “invest in Main Street, not Wall Street.”
The Lake Highlands guys comprise a majority among several new 3 Nations shareholders whose financing, a portion of which went to a marketing and design firm, made the slick packaging and standout online presence possible.
“Candidly, we got involved because this is a fun industry, and because we know the beer is great,” Royer says. “We are a bit north of the typical age of craft beer drinkers, but we’ve all really immersed ourselves in the culture.”
Gavin Secchi, whose parents own Ferrari’s Italian restaurant chain, understood when he founded 3 Nations that it takes more than a unique German American fusion ale with a well-rounded malt profile (which his signature German Pale Ale boasts) to make it in Texas’ flooded craft beer market.
He started out like any other aspiring brew master might. After graduating from Jesuit High School in North Dallas he began homebrewing and tinkering with recipes. He studied at the Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago and eventually led big companies including Franconia Brewing and Rahr and Sons. But he was thirsty for more. Branding and marketing would make the difference, he knew.
If he wanted to launch his microbrewery company full throttle, he’d need investors.
The investment team and Secchi were fortunate to find one another, says Royer, the principal and most hands-on of the Lake Highlands stakeholders.
“Gavin has never run a business. I have never run a brewery. We are putting together the best of each of our experience to make something special out of Gavin’s idea.”
The corporate guys and the brewer took a few weeks to reach an agreement, but they eventually settled on a business strategy and began brewing. Cans hit store shelves in July.
Secchi has been working 60-80 hour weeks to make the most of the opportu-

nity, Royer says. “He’s been knocking it dead.”
Secchi doesn’t mind the hours. “This is exactly what I wanted.” He adds that he is a little surprised, six weeks in, to see packages outselling draft. “This is another thing that’s different from other brewers. We found a way to do packaging right off the bat and it is working out.”
Royer says it is a thrill to see neighbors and friends enjoying cans of 3 Nations German Pale Ale or Belgium style American Wit.
It’s also fun, he notes, to be partnering with Purnell and Morrow on 3 Nations — the trio have been friends since childhood. They all graduated Lake Highlands High School in 1974. “We have a long history of doing business together and a very long personal friendship.”
As fun as it is, it’s a business and Royer expects that if they “follow the plan” and keep expenses low, they expect to “be financially vibrant within the first year.”

Meat.
It’s what’s for dinner, always, at One90 Smoked Meats. One90 offers a variety of small-batch craft meats at its recently opened storefront in the shopping center at Northwest Highway and Easton. The business was the brainchild of a group of friends who all attended Bryan Adams High School. It began as a hobby, simply smoking meats together. “We started by doing that for a while, and then we just kind of realized that it was really, really good smoked meat,” says partner Herman Guerra. So they decided to launch One90 and start selling meat online and at local farmers markets. They began with barbecue and eventually added things like smoked duck and lamb. Then they opened a physical location in July. “We’ve only been here a few weeks and it has been a tremendous start,” Guerra says. They’ve been up to their offal in business, and they’re also partnering with local restaurants such as Goodfriend and Greenville Avenue Pizza Company. At the storefront, neighbors can buy smoked meat to-go that is packaged and ready to be heated and consumed. One90 also offers a variety of sandwiches that can be eaten on the premise. Either way, your next meal will be so tender that it just might make you cry like a grown man.

Best Place for Kids IN LAKE HIGHLANDS
And the winner is … White Rock Skate Center. With its glittering disco balls and funky tunes, the rink offers a modern-day taste of the 1970s, and it’s a draw for families across Lake Highlands. It’s no surprise that Lake Highlands Advocate readers voted it their favorite place for kid-centric entertainment. It’s hard for anyone to not feel like a kid when they slap on a pair of wheels and head to the center of the rink for the “Hokey Pokey.” Keeping that retro vibe is good for nostalgia and business, owner Chuck Connor says. Patrons love rolling in and finding exactly what they remember from childhood. “I see so many parents come in and show their kids around, saying ‘I used to come here,’ and they tell me, ‘I’m so glad you’re still here’.” Then there is the famed money machine, where dollar bills whip around in a frenzied gust of wind as excited birthday boys and girls (and adults) try to capture the cash. Connor’s dad built the rink in 1973. He’s been running the place for some 40 years now. The roller rink is open Thursday through Sunday during the summer, and Friday through Sunday during the school year.

If George could talk, he might tell us why the man, without any explanation, left him at the Sachse Animal Shelter three years ago. The gentle hound, while skinny for his hulking frame, was housebroken and responded to simple commands.
“Why anyone would leave him is a mystery to me,” says Andie Loftus. “But we got lucky. It is ridiculous how much I love him.”
At the Loftus’ Lake Highlands home, the Great Pyrenees mix expanded to a healthy 150 pounds as he became all things — horse, table, bed — to his new human brother, a preschooler named Brody. “George has this
flat, wide back that you can set things on, and he’ll walk around with whatever it is, and Brody crawls up there, lays on him, rides him.” These days George accompanies Brody on his morning treks to Moss Haven Elementary. In the schoolyard, George is a child magnet. Superficially, George impersonates a guard dog. He delivers the baritone “woof!” of a protective beast. But he would not hurt a gnat. George spends most of the day sleeping at the feet of Russ Loftus, Andie’s husband who works from home. Conference calls sometimes are interrupted by George’s explosive snoring, Russ says.
Massive amounts of fur are of concern during hot summer months, so home haircuts are a happy necessity.
“It takes two hours, but he just lays his head in my lap while I cut and buzz him. When I stop, he paws me. He doesn’t want me to stop.”
He is easily pleased. To throw him an ice cube is to induce the sort of glee most mutts reserve for hambones.
He sleeps between the Loftus parents, snuggling up to Andie, one colossal leg draped over his rescuer.
“Yep,” she laughs. “He likes to cuddle. Ridiculous.”

Don’t tell Daphne she doesn’t have it all
With one misstep, Daphne was sinking like a stone to the bottom of the Corporons’ swimming pool. Born blind and with vestibular disease, which impairs balance, the dog’s first few years were difficult. But this plunge was especially petrifying. Bill Corporon was right there — heard the splash and caught the last glimpse of cotton-white fur as it disappeared beneath the surface. He dove in after her, performed CPR, rushed her to the emergency clinic and paid the
tab. It wasn’t the first or last of Daphne’s hefty medical expenses, but Corporon and his wife, Kathy, say this “incredible creature” is worth every cent. “She is a friend, a family member and an investment,” says Kathy, a former physical therapist with a soft spot for people and animals with disabilities. “They have always tugged at my heart,” she says.
At an adoption event almost 17 years ago, Daphne stood out in an otherwise healthy litter of mixed-breed spitzes. She clung like a Koala cub to Kathy’s shoulder. For four hours straight, Kathy says, “we didn’t let go of each other.”
Daphne developed glaucoma and needed both eyes surgically removed. The glassy prosthetic replacements, unnoticeable at a glance, serve purely cosmetic purposes. When Daphne was 11, the vet removed her inflamed gall bladder, a $5,000 procedure. A few years ago her hearing began to go; now she’s totally deaf.
But Daphne doesn’t seem to know she has so many ailments. She is perky despite the aches and pains of age; her sense of smell helps her navigate the world and recognize those she loves, Kathy says. “We now refer to her lovingly as our little Helen Keller.”

[Disabled animals] have always tugged at my heart.”
A dose of Shorty eases anxiety and elevates mood — he’s like Zoloft, without the negative side effects.
If you’ll have him, the caramel-colored Chihuahua will seek your lap without delay. White Rock Valley resident Susan Wehe found him curled up in hers several years ago, after a friend scooped him off a busy road.
“This itty bitty creature was strutting around in traffic like a lion,” recalls Wehe, who then adopted him. Her aging dog Os-

car was dying of congestive heart failure, and her cherished cat had recently absconded.
“It was such a sad time,” Susan says. Her voice cracks a little from remembering it. Shorty’s restorative vibes swaddled her and stretched to Oscar.
“Shorty became Oscar’s hospice dog. I swear he extended Oscar’s life by a year.” The older dog perked up for Shorty and joined him on trips to the park.
“They would ride side-by-side in the car,
both sets of ears flapping in the wind, so happy. Shorty brought our lives hope and love when we needed it.”
When Wehe’s father wound up in a physical rehabilitation center this year, Shorty provided.
“He would sit in my dad’s lap, and then we would walk around and visit the other residents. He would go up to the people in wheelchairs, and if they wanted, I would sit him in their laps. What he does is replace tears with smiles.”

FETCHINGPERSONALITIES
Rustie: Eyes of the tiger
There are few legal things that bring humankind as much joy as watching cats in boxes (just search the term on YouTube if you don’t believe it), and this 12-pound Persian will stuff herself into a square like nobody’s business. “You put down a box of any shape or size and she’s getting in,” Donna Mason says. Rustie can’t talk. She’s a cat. But her eyes will say, “I love you” just as soon as they will “tell you to go to hell,” Mason says with a grin.
“She can burn a hole through you or melt your heart with those beautiful copper eyes.” She’s shaved down for the summer; still those highly praised peepers peek out from a downy mane of amber and white. They belie the fate that was predicted more than a decade ago — Rustie had a heart murmur and would not live long. She paces herself and plays, only when she feels like it, with gusto. For almost 13 years she’s been entertaining Mason, her husband, Wes, and visitors to their Merriman Park/University Manor home. “If someone comes over, she doesn’t hide like other cats, she’s right in the middle of everything,” Mason says. “She is so expressive, so funny and sometimes just nuts.”

A super pastel calico ball python is part of Klayton Mai’s collection.
MR. PYTHON
MMA master, snake breeder and expectant father Klayton Mai squeezes the most out of life
Story by Christina Hughes Babb | Photos by Danny Fulgencio
At a glance, it looks like your grandma’s arts-and-crafts room — tidy with wall-towall tiers of clear plastic drawers, but sans the beads and yarn.
Closer observation might reveal subtle movement inside. That’s the snake.
Klayton Mai is raising more than 50 nonvenomous ball pythons in an intentionally warm room of his Lake Highlands home.
He has steadily grown his snake breeding side-business over the past decade, though he was just a kid when his dad gave him his first.
This is not to say artistry isn’t taking place in this room. It is. As art often does, Mai’s work draws inspiration from nature and biology. His ball python collection is a result of meticulous design and genetic engineering.
“They are like a living painting, a work of art, each one unique,” Klayton says. His largest snake hangs around his neck like a beautifully patterned boa. “This one’s a champion,” he says of the female (typically the larger sex), who, if extended, would be almost as tall as her owner.
A ball python can make a fine pet, Mai says. They are low maintenance — they eat once a week, if that, and defecate infrequently.
But his pythons don’t have names, and he doesn’t consider them pets.
“They do not think like dogs, which think more like we humans do. They have a very different psychology,” says Mai, who also owns two cute canines, BB and Buster; the pups pay little mind to the snakes, though they are obsessed with the mice that the snakes eat.
Snake husbandry to Mai is more com-
parable to gardening than pet ownership.
“Like tending to plants, the work is relaxing and rewarding and you enjoy what you are nurturing and raising.”
There are more than 100 ball python mutations (“morphs,” in industry speak). Breeding for unique traits is a gamble, Mai explains, but understanding an animal’s history, as well as basic genetics, makes it less so.
American Reptile Breeders Convention in Arlington. Mai relishes those events and the opportunity to spend a weekend showcasing and selling his snakes as well as sharing his expertise with attendees.
“All kinds of lifestyles, personalities and incomes attend the shows. I like helping people overcome fear and spreading knowledge about the animals, about breeding, about conservationism,” he says.
“A lot of people fear these snakes might hurt you. But they only bite if you get in the way of their food, or defensively. I’ve been bitten a couple times. It doesn’t hurt. They are constrictors, but they don’t get big enough to harm anything larger than a rodent,” he says.
Some states have enacted laws restricting exotic animals as pets, mostly due to dangerous reptiles absconding and terrorizing the public.
Index cards placed at the base of each drawer contain detailed information such as gender and genealogy as well as breeding, feeding and shedding schedules.
To produce an albino, ivory, piebald or any of the scarcer variations is exciting and potentially lucrative. Take the lavender albino ball python, for example. One sells for upwards of $40,000 today. But with many breeders working to replicate it, the morph eventually will become more common and drop in price — basic supply and demand. A normal, the most basic ball python found in pet stores, runs $40.
Mai and dealers like him sell their inventory through web stores and at herpetology expos such as last month’s North
Mai notes that owners of reptiles, like owners of dogs and cats, can be irresponsible.
His own collection is secure and fastidiously cared for.
Klayton’s wife Hannah Mai, now six months pregnant with the couple’s first child, is circumspect but game when it comes to the snakes. She opens one of the drawers, reaches in, but retreats when the reptile hisses.
“He’s just letting you know that you are disturbing him,” Klayton says.
She replies, “Why don’t you get him.”
Klayton expertly seizes the serpent. It folds itself into a protective orb (that’s why they are called ball pythons, Mai explains).
He places the yellowish lesser in his

wife’s outstretched hands, and she thanks him.
“This one is my favorite,” she says. “I love the eyes.”
Both Klayton and Hannah graduated from Lake Highlands High School, but they didn’t start dating until college at the University of Oklahoma. Back then he had just a few snakes, she recalls.
“But gradually more started to appear,” Hannah says. “Over the past three years, since we moved in this house, it has turned into a full-fledged snake raising business.”
And more snakes meant more snake food: mice.
Pointing to a neatly painted backyard shed, light illuminating its win-
dow, Hannah explains the mouse house, where her husband raises rodents that eventually become the snakes’ meals.
“They have very good conditions out there,” Hannah says. “A person could live in there.”
Buster the Boston terrier patrols the rodent shed, hoping to nab one for himself, she adds.
When it is time to make mice into dinner, typically he humanely kills and freezes them. A few snakes only eat live mice, he says, and mumbles something about the “circle of life.”
Despite his skill and passion for snake breeding, it isn’t Klayton’s full time job. He has worked years for his family’s plumbing business, Mai Plumbing.
He also is a professional, highly ranked mixed martial arts fighter.
The latter — unlike dealing in snakes or dysfunctional toilets — makes Hannah uneasy. Still, she supports him.
“I love this man, maybe to a fault, because when he’s doing what makes him

happy, he lights up and I could probably accept anything.”
The hard part is seeing him lose. “It’s crushing, not just seeing him hurt, physically, but he takes it so hard when he puts so much effort into something and he doesn’t win.”
Luckily, he has only lost once. He won seven of eight of his last fights.
His nickname in the ring? The Python, of course.
“I do learn something from watching my snakes,” he says. “In all of my wins, I’ve had one knockout, and the rest have been takedown by constriction.”
Klayton is on the precipice of becoming a member of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) — the world’s largest mixed martial arts promotional company. It would mean more TV appearances and more income from MMA fighting.
Klayton and Hannah, neither yet 30 years old, agree there is nothing wrong with dividing interests for a while.
Klayton “never half-asses anything,” Hannah says. She believes he could make any of his three professions a successful full-time endeavor.
“If he put everything into snake breeding, for example, I am sure we would have a warehouse and that it would be a well-oiled machine of a business.”

Good beer to go
The owners of Goodfriend Beer Garden & Burger House on Peavy and the Blind Butcher on Lowest Greenville, Josh Yingling and Matt Tobin, will open a package store in the shopping center across the street from Goodfriend. Located near White Rock Lake on the outskirts of Lake Highlands, the new shop is a deli/convenience concept with togo sandwiches, packaged meat and cheese, other groceries, beer and wine.
Ta-ta, T. Hee
T. Hee Greetings, the go-to neighborhood gift store eight years running, closed at the end of August. Said owners Tony Doles and David Farris in a farewell email to customers: “We are seeing it in other local retailers like Gecko Hardware and Brumley Gardens (which closed its Oak Cliff location only) — it’s just tough to compete in this word of Amazon and Walmart.” The Lake Highlands residents opened the boutique in 2008 at the southwest corner of Walnut Hill and Audelia. They opened a second store in East Dallas in 2010 and a third in Preston Hollow in 2012. Less than three months after opening the Preston Hollow shop and “unable to create enough traffic to make it sustainable,” it closed, followed by the closing of the Hillside Village store last year.
Local ice cream
Lake Highlands Creamery , purveyors of homemade ice cream in a variety of note-
worthy forms and flavors, will open shop soon next door to Atomic Pie in the Lakeridge Shopping Center at Walnut Hill and Audelia.
Something to marvel over
Frontrunner Comics specializing in comic books, collectibles and trading card games — will open soon at the southeast corner of Walnut Hill and Audelia. Co-owner Andrew Johnson used to be a partner at Urban Thrift in the same center. He and business partner Baxley Beckham live in the Highland Oaks neighborhood. “We are hoping to help bring more local business to the area and provide a place that some of the neighborhood junior high and high school students, and their parents, will enjoy frequenting,” Johnson says.
Fuzzy Dream
Fuzzy’s Taco Shop served its last burritos on Abrams Street in July, although the manager says the taco chain plans to open another location in the immediate area within a month or two. The space at the corner of Mockingbird has been leased to Dream Cafe, which plans to remodel to add a play area for children. The goal is to finish with construction and begin serving breakfast, lunch and dinner sometime in November. There are two Dream Cafe locations — one in Uptown and one in Addison. The East Dallas location is owned by White Rock area resident Christine Lott.

A BEAUTIFUL, WASTEFUL CHAPEL
On a recent sabbatical, I saw firsthand the work of a master, considered the motivation of the benefactor, and reflected upon its meaning then and now.
At the beginning of the 14th century, the brilliant Italian painter, Giotto, was commissioned to fresco a new chapel in the city of Padua. A “banker” named Enrico Scrovegni had purchased a plot of land adjacent to his palace that had long ago been the site of a Roman arena. Scrovegni’s father, Reginaldo, also had been in the money lending business and had died without reckoning with his sins of usury. The son had followed in his father’s footsteps, but fear of eternal damnation moved him to build a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary as a sin offering to God in hopes of gaining mercy on his soul.
Giotto’s works are carefully preserved in this small but beautiful chapel. In themes typical of the day, the painter depicted the life of Christ, along with that of Mary and her parents. A scene of the Last Judgment depicts some souls being welcomed into heaven and others being consigned to hell. Scrovegni is pictured on the side of the blessed, rendering his chapel to the Blessed Mother. He hoped that this gift would compensate for the riches he gained by cheating poor people out of money through the charging of interest on loans. (At that time, charging any interest at all on loans to the poor was considered a sin.)
Did it never occur to him that the better way would be to stop oppressing the poor and to give back what he had taken from them? I mean, what good would a chapel do to correct the misery on others of wealth gained unjustly?
The prophet Micah said: “With what shall I come before the Lord? Shall I come with burnt offerings? Will the Lord be pleased
with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?” And then the answer: “He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”
When Jesus spotted the crooked tax col-
lector, Zacchaeus, up in the sycamore tree one day in Jericho, the man’s repentance led him to give half his possessions to the poor and to refund four times what he had defrauded anyone. Jesus said in response: “Today salvation has come to this house.”
Today we have predatory lenders (payday and auto title lenders) in our community who charge exorbitant interest (often more than 400 percent) to the most vulnerable people in our society. They are, by any reasonable definition, usurers. Yet some of them, and the politicians who defend their outrageous practices of legalized loansharking, go to church on Sundays, and some even make big charitable donations that curry human praise.
God is no sucker. Ill-gotten gains liberally given to salve one’s conscience never move the heart of God. Only simple acts of right dealing in the first place and repentance that leads to reparations when wrong is done bring God’s favor.
And now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go consider what ways I, too, have been fruitlessly engaged in spiritual bribery.

New staff members have contributed further to the exciting changes at the facility.
“Justin Walters, our new strength and conditioning coach, runs our Baylor Sports Performance Academy for elite athletes. Walters has worked with Olympic medalwinning athletes and served as an assistant coach for the Chicago Cubs,” Eaton says.

TIMELESS HEALTH AT MONTICELLO WEST
Advancing in years is no reason to give up on staying healthy and active.
Since 1970, Monticello West has provided a community for aging adults to stay fit, active and mentally sharp.
“Monticello West staff envisioned that, as baby boomers aged, they would need to provide a place where people felt at home and have access to personalized medical care,” says Nan Mulvaney, Monticello West Director of Community Relations.
The staff provides a foundation for high-quality care, earning Monticello West the industry’s coveted fivestar rating.
Caregivers at Monticello West understand that families work to gain advance knowledge and expertise about care for their loved one.
Two outdoor courtyards provide opportunities for seniors to stay active while strolling amidst nature and beautiful flowers, right in the heart of Highland Park.
Monticello West offers at least five scheduled activities daily, providing numerous opportunities for intellectual stimulation.
“Our goal is to enable our residents to live an active, independent lifestyle while our dedicated team members and licensed nurses provide assistance with medications, transportation and other specific services depending on the needs of our residents,” Mulvaney says.

THE MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE OF ALEJANDRO ARZOLA
On the afternoon of June 20, Alejandro Arzola of Oak Cliff was driving along Northwest Highway toward the Interstate 635 onramp when he crashed and rolled his blue Dodge Ram truck in an apparent single-car accident. Afterward, he called his girlfriend and told her he’d been in an accident. He was OK, he told her, and he asked her to pick him up. According to 32-year-old Arzola’s family, the girlfriend did not have a car and could not reach him. He’d have to find another way home. When Dallas Police officers arrived at the scene, they found the wrecked truck but no Arzola. At first, everyone assumed he’d found another ride, but hours and days went by and no one heard from him. Arzola’s family is still searching for answers.
“It is not like him to disappear, and for over a month, it is just not something he would do,” sister Yadira Arzola says. He has two children, ages 13 and 5, and the eldest is worried to tears some days, she says. “We are trying to stick together and support the kids,” she says, “but it this really hard, and confusing.”
Arzola says her brother drinks alcohol occasionally but has no known history of substance abuse or mental problems. She says she “has no idea” if he was drinking the day he disappeared. She says she thinks he might have been shaken or shocked following the accident. During that last phone call, when his girlfriend asked where he was, he seemed initially confused, Arzola says.
He grew up in Dallas, in Oak Cliff mostly. The close-knit family has always lived around the central and northeast Dallas region, so he should be familiar with the area, she says. Anyone with information is asked to call Dallas police at 214.671.4268.

NORBUCK PARK
As told to Keri Mitchell by Sally Rodriguez, retired Dallas Park and Recreation Department historian. All photos are courtesy of the Dallas Municipal Archives and curated by Rodriguez. She authored the books “White Rock Lake” and “White Rock Lake Revisited,” available at area bookstores and through arcadiapublishing.com.
Norbuck Park was named for Northwest Highway and Buckner. It is part of the original tracts of White Rock Lake that were acquired in 1909-10, then transferred to the Park and Recreation Department in 1929.
The eastbound lanes of Northwest Highway were added in the 1950s. Here, the photo shows the early development of the park and construction of the ball fields. Where crews are working is actually the old Buckner, which they moved slightly to the west, where it is now. So the parking lot in Norbuck is actually the old Buckner Boulevard. You can see that there are no trees where it went through. Next to it is the old East Lawther, which is now on the other side of Buckner, but used to be part of the lake. In 1932, you could still see water there.
1950s
As you can see from their small size, all of the trees were newly planted. The only houses are new and to the east. You can still see the old well that was at the corner of Buckner and Northwest Highway, where people used to get water during the drought in the 1950s. And look how small Audelia is coming into Northwest Highway, when it was just a twolane road.
1960s
See that little triangle to the west of the houses? The developer gave that to the city. The city’s property line used to angle through where the houses are today. So we swapped land and gave them this land on the other side of the residential street [Classen] for this little triangle of land here. If you look at the aerials, there’s still a tree line marking the triangle.
In the bottom photo from the ‘60s, we’re looking south. You see the ball fields are fully developed and the trees have grown. Even here, you can still see the scarring from the old route of Buckner to the east of where they constructed it in the ’50s. There is Hexter Elementary School near the top left corner, and you can see Audelia is still a little two-lane road. Mockingbird now comes across the creek to meet Buckner — look how white the concrete is. You can tell it’s before they dredged to create Mockingbird Point [where the dog park is now].
