Barbara Bush Wedding
Former president and Preston Hollow neighbor
George W. Bush’s daughter Barbara got married. Bush walked his daughter, who attended Hockaday, down the aisle at the family’s Walker Point home in Maine. The bride’s grandfather, former President George H.W. Bush, also attended. “Barbara is named for a unique and strong woman — and rightly so, because she is unique and strong,” CBS quoted Bush speaking of his late mother, former First Lady Barbara Bush, who died in April. Barbara Bush, 36, is the co-founder of the public health nonprofit, Global Health Corps. The groom, Craig Coyne, 37, is the screenwriter behind the 2005 film “Jarhead,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

Mail For The Mailman
Neighbors gushed about our story on postman Johnny Brown, the “tender-loving carrier.” He is beloved for his extra attention, including checking on elderly residents when he hasn’t seen them for two to three days. Among the comments:
Angela Kapelski McKee: “Thanks, Johnny. I wish you were my mailman! Also, you look good in shorts.”
Gabe Hirsch Sorrells: “Best mail carrier ever and a great friend.”
Ron Smith: “He’s not very good looking, but I think he does a very good job delivering the mail. Keep your shorts pulled up.”

Bacon, Please
Slater’s 50/50, a West Coast chain, is opening at Preston and Forest. The burger joint’s claim to fame is its halfbeef, half-bacon patty and creative toppings like grilled pineapple and Fritos. Options include the enchilada burger and the p.b. & jellousy, with thick-cut bacon, peanut butter and strawberry jelly on a honey wheat bun.
A few weeks after Snooze, an A.M. Eatery and Civil Pour started serving customers at The Hill, four more restaurants announced they would join the shopping center’s lineup. The mixed-use development at Walnut Hill Lane and Central Expressway has undergone a $90-million makeover. Dallas-based owner Capref Manager LLC incorporated green space, revamped each storefront facade and added about 19 tenants. Here are the four new restaurants slated to open in 2019:
Empire Baking Co., a Dallas-based artisan bakery; Pokeworks, which serves Hawaiianstyle poke; Sauce Pizza and Wine, a pizzeria that also serves pasta, salads, wine and beer; Sushi de Handroll, a fast-casual joint that serves sushi and tempura.

Think “The Bodyguard” or “Guarding Tess.” Now replace the leading men with a tall, slender woman in a conservative suit and the strength to take you down. Kathleen Flatley Hickman’s 1976 Ursuline graduation photo shows her among many in white gowns and hats. The photo belies the fact that she will spend 31 years in the United States Secret Service, protecting everyone from former First Ladies Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama to former President George W. Bush, Pope John Paul II and foreign dignitaries. In 1999, The New York Times documented her role as coordinator of security for the NATO leaders gathering in New York for their 50th anniversary celebration. The article’s title was “In Her Hands.” Now a security consultant, Hickman will receive Ursuline’s 2018 Alumnae Award Nov. 11. Her home office on Echo Brook Lane is crowded with photos of those she protected as well as her 20-year-old son, who attends Texas A&M University.
What happened after your graduated from Ursuline?
I went to Texas Tech. I graduated and was looking for a job, and my dad said, “There’s this new hotel downtown called the Anatole. Why don’t you go apply there?” I started working there as a concierge. At the time, that’s where a lot of the Secret Service agents stayed. One of the recruiters approached me and said, “Why don’t you fill out an application?” A year later, I was hired. About 10 percent of the agents were female.
Were there any dangerous moments?
Once we were conducting a search warrant for credit-card fraud in an apartment complex. One of the suspects bolted and got in a tussle with me and another agent. But all was good. Another time I was driving past El Fenix, and this car went flying out of the intersection, airborne, and landed on top of a Volkswagen on Cedar Springs. I called on my radio, “Get an ambulance!” The next thing I know, the guy gets out of the Volkswagen. He’s fine. The bad guy tumbles out of his car. He’s only got a T-shirt on and runs up the street. I’m thinking, “I’ve got to go chase this guy.” He collapses in the street. I pull up my car, get on my Federal Agent jacket and tell him, “I’m calling an ambulance.” Then he jumps up and starts choking me. A good Samaritan came out and helped me, so that was interesting.
How did you stay in shape?
I was always a runner. I work out. And that’s big when you’re traveling and on protective detail. The days are long, and it’s important
to keep healthy. When President Clinton used to jog, I was like, “Oh my God.” It’s one thing jogging when you’re in your shorts and t-shirt, but it’s another when you have a gun and a radio. When I was Michelle Obama’s detail leader, I started working on core and yoga, just for my lower back.
What advice would you give your younger self? Just to not worry so much. Keep a journal.
What recommendations do you have for others who want to have a similar career?
I fell into it. It’s competitive. You don’t have to be a criminal justice major to be with the Secret Service. It helps, but if you’re really interested, go into law enforcement. Some of the federal agencies don’t hire right out of college. And then just go for it. I had a really good experience working for the government.
What was your uniform?
If it ’s a black-tie affair, the men wear tuxes. Females wear a black suit and a white blouse. If the presidents go golfing, you wear khakis. At the Bush’s Crawford ranch, you wear blue jeans.
What personal sacrifices did you make for your career?
You miss family events and holidays. Fortunately, I only missed one of my son’s birthdays, but he remembers that. I was home the next day but it still didn’t count. He was 11. You must have the support of family and understanding. I never complained to my son or talked badly about the job. He understood that’s just what I did.
How did you balance work and home life?
I was one of the first three females that had been hired in the field office. I was already a supervisor when my son was born. When I was pregnant, our shift was supposed to go

train with the New York emergency response team. I never, ever called in sick or anything, and I told them, “Okay, here’s the story. I’m pregnant. But I still want to work. I still want to be on the shift. Don’t say anything to the bosses.” My supervisor was so good. He said, “You can go do a desk day and miss the training.” For the next month, I worked the shift and did my thing. And then the last day, I told my boss, who hadn’t been there, “Sir, I’m going to have a baby.” And he said, “Yeah, I know.” And I said, “Well, thank you for not freaking out and pulling me off the shift.”
What is your most memorable experience?
When Pope John Paul II visited the U.S., I was a fairly new agent and they put together jump teams of agents to leapfrog to the next stop. I was on the jump team when the Pope started in Miami, went to New Orleans, California and Detroit. I came in a day later so I thought as a new agent I wouldn’t see anything. I was just happy to be a part of it. When I went to my assignment, the site supervisor agent said, “Okay, so you’re going to be in this chapel and there’s going to be a still photographer and a camera man, and then the Pope’s going to come in here with his detail leader and pray.” As a Catholic girl, that was a big deal for me. I was kneeling for eight or nine hours. I called my dad that night and said, “Dad, I think I’m good to go if I miss Mass for a year.” There were so many opportunities and places that I went to that I would never have had the chance to experience otherwise. I rode an elephant in Nepal in the jungle with Mrs. Clinton and Chelsea. Working at the White House was a privilege.

HOW FORMER COLLEGE BASKETBALL PLAYER AMY STEWART CHANNELED THAT FIGHT INTO A NEW FIRM

Interview by LISA KRESL / Photography by DANNY FULGENCIO
BLUFFVIEW RESIDENT AND LAWYER Amy Stewart started a women- and minority-owned law firm with partner Sarah Bradbury at One Arts Plaza in September 2017. Passionate about helping women and minorities, Stewart uses her experience as a former Division 1 college basketball player to do battle for clients. She is the author of a chapter in “Her Story: Lessons in Success From Lawyers Who Live It.” Husband, Ed, works for the Big 12 Conference. Her 13-yearold daughter, Ava, attends Trinity Christian Academy.
Tell me about yourself.
I’m originally from North Carolina. I came to Texas in 2006,
when my husband got a job with the Big 12 Conference. We moved here with our daughter, Ava, who was 2 at the time. Fast forward until last September, when my partner Sarah Bradbury and I decided to start a law firm. We’re exhausted, but we’re having a good time.
How long have you lived in Preston Hollow?
We moved here last year in May. We live in Bluffview. It didn’t look like Dallas. It looked very green. It’s a quiet bedroom community. We got lost in the neighborhood and thought, “We’ve got to find a house over here.”
How did you and your husband meet?
Before I went to law school, I played basketball at Wake Forest, and then I didn’t really know what I was going to do with my life. I coached college basketball for a few years and then I worked for a company that was a consultant for the NCAA. I met Ed through work. He was working for the University of Missouri, and it’s just one of those “met him through work”-type of deals. He snookered me, and then I moved to Columbia, Missouri. We are so grateful to be here in Dallas for his job with the Big 12 Conference.
What made you want to start your own firm?
We wanted to serve our community. We wanted to provide top-notch legal skills in commercial litigation, labor employment and product liability, but also help people, especially women. From the beginning, we had a tagline that we support women. Period.
Sports played a big role in your life, tell me about that.
If I hadn’t gotten an athletic scholarship, I wouldn’t have gone to college. I needed that scholarship to get out of Five Points, North Caroina and get a degree. It was survival. The skills
“From the beginning, we had a tagline that we support women. Period.”
I learned as a student athlete — how to be a competitor, but doing it with grace, coming up with game plans, working with teams. We want to team up with our clients and help them get the best resolution that they can. There’s no other career where being in trial gives you the same sense as being on the basketball, volleyball or tennis court.
How much gender discrimination do you face?
There is a part where you have to prove yourself. I’m not going to lie. I lead with the fact that I was a student athlete with clients because people perceive that female athletes work hard and are dedicated to team work.
What challenges have you overcome?
My father was African American and my mom is white, and I was born in the south in the ‘70s. Do I need to say anything else? Walking around with a mother that no one thought was your mother was awkward. But it made me stronger. It made me able to get along with people from different backgrounds.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Be patient.
What’s your typical day?
On my best day, I get my work-out in. I get Ava ready for school, get Ed ready for work. I get to the office at 8 or 8:30. I run the legal business of the firm and handle business development. Depending on the night, Ava plays club volleyball. If it’s my best day, I’m ending the night with my husband and we’re having a glass of wine and getting ready for the next day.
What would surprise people about you?
We’re passionate about supporting two women’s groups in town. We support a group called Mothers Abandoned or Widowed. It’s a non-profit that helps women that are trying to turn their lives around and help their kids. We sponsored a golf tournament this year for them. And then the other one that’s very dear to my heart is helping the female veterans at a group called Honor Courage Commitment. I was at
a conference and I heard very heartwrenching statistics about women when they come back from being in the military and trying to assimilate into civilian life. In March, we had an event where I invited women from all professional areas. There were more than 150 to 200 women there, and we created these vision boards. In the fall of 2019, we plan to create a mentorship program between the female veterans that attended and
professional women.
What are your plans?
I’ve had an article published by the American Bar Association. I’m starting a series called “The Girlfriend’s Guide to Negotiating.”

HILLCREST’S TOP SPOT
THE NAME TOP POT came from an accident involving a vintage neon sign that hung above a Seattle-area Chinese Restaurant.
Mark and Michael Klebeck came across an amazing deal: a used neon sign that once hung above Top Spot Chinese restaurant. They didn’t know what they might use it for, but they had to have it. When they loaded the sign in the back of the truck and drove off with it, they heard a loud “thud” from the truck bed. The “S” fell off while they were driving, and “Top Pot” was born. But they still had to develop the concept, so the sign sat rusting in their parents’ backyard for four years before they finally put it to use.
During that time, the brothers experimented

with recipes that were passed down from their grandmother.
“One recipe in particular was a yeast-raised dough that had a slight sweetness to it,” Mark says. “This could be fried on the stove top and it was fantastic with jam fillings as well as a variety of simple glazes and icings.”
From there, their recipes got better until they were ready to launch their café concept.
When it was time to branch out of their home state of Washington, they knew Dallas was their next stop. They opened three locations in the Dallas area: one in Preston Hollow, one on Greenville Avenue and one in Richardson.
The store on Hillcrest is cozy and inviting. With warm wood and bookshelves lining the walls, customers sit and stay awhile. It’s comfortable for working on a laptop or bringing the kids in for a snack. The smell of warm sugar mingling with coffee intoxicates. This location makes the doughnuts for all three Dallas-area locations.
Not much is different between the Dallas locations and the ones in Washington. Dallas stores use coffee beans roasted in small batches in Seattle. Dallasites do have particular tastes. Blueberry is a year-round flavor in Dallas because it is so popular, but it’s a seasonal flavor in Washington.
“It’s interesting the popularity of the doughnuts are different in Seattle than they are down here,” district manager Karla Fife says. “Like in Seattle, maple bars are really popular, and down here? Not so much. Maple’s not a thing in Texas? “I don’t know.”

So if you pop into Top Pot, be sure to order a blueberry fritter like a real Texan.

STEVE GREEN loved living on Rosa Road so much that not only did he and his former partner, Kenneth Craighead, build a house there in 2000, they also constructed a similar one next door in 2016.
The new house has a few tweaks. It’s one-story instead of two. The distance from the garage door to the kitchen is fewer steps, and there’s a serving counter in the butler’s pantry for entertaining. Most appealing to Green: the ceiling is raised above the roofline, so there are more vertical windows.
Architect Paul Pedigo designed the house, which recently was featured on the AIA Dallas Tour of Homes. Green credits Craighead for the interior design.
The house is built around Green’s two great passions. “Art and wine are two big things with me,” says Green, a lawyer and co-owner with Craighead of Craighead Green Gallery in the Arts District. “They’re good habits to have and bad habits, too.”
The new house has more linear footage of walls to showcase their art. “We have more walls to use, and the light is more natural because there’s a lot more windows here as well.”
Enter the house and you’re greeted by Wallace, a 5-year-old Scottie, and a painting of a gorilla. The look on the gorilla’s face reminds Green of his two Scotties’ expressions when they’re naughty.
Every room is filled with art. Even the laundry room houses a collection of colored glass plates. His favorite piece is in the living room and is called “Die Massen,” which means “the masses” in German. “I like it because what is it?” Green says. “Is it people walking on the street or in a subway or are they sitting in a stadium? It’s mostly

men, but there are about 12 women interspersed. It’s always been a piece that sings to me and evokes lots of conversation.”
Next, he excitedly points out an abstract piece in the hall. Peer through a small ball in front of the painting, and you see Mona Lisa. “It’s interesting because of the engineering and the thought process behind it. It’s so cool when you realize what it is.”
He also loves the trompe l’oeil by Yrjo Edelmann. “It’s a favorite because he and his wife were such good friends [of ours].”
The wine tasting room is decorated in black and white with an entire wall dedicated to the wine collection, all 1,200 bottles. The chandelier is made of red grenadine bottles.

instead of grass — easier upkeep with the Scotties. The landscaping, minimal with drought-tolerant, native plants, highlights sculptures. Green describes the grass in the other half of the backyard as so soft it’s like walking on carpet.

PUMPED ABOUT PUMPKINS
MEET THE PYLE FAMILY, PUMPKIN PURVEYORS TO THE REGION

IF YOU PROCURED A PUMPKIN from North Haven Gardens or Calloway’s Nursery this season, they were probably hand-picked at the Pumpkin Pyle of Floydada, north of Lubbock.
The family farm has been supplying some neighborhood nurseries and the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden for years. The three-generation family farm started growing pumpkins in 1991, when Louis Pyle gave his 16-year-old grandson Jason 10 acres. “Pop-Pop” asked him what he wanted to grow and Jason said pumpkins. That year the teen, parents Paula and Robert Pyle and Louis raised 10 acres of pumpkins each. They started selling them off the road in front of their home.
Now the family has 660 acres, employs about 150 and loads between 15 to 20 semi-trucks a day during the season. The family mainly sells pumpkins in Texas and Oklahoma, but they also send trucks to Arizona, New Mexico, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana.

“It’s been a really good supplement to our farming,” Paula says. The family’s main crop is cotton.
Paula and daughter-in-law Lindsey take orders and run the office. The most popular pumpkins, she says, are the Jack-o-Lantern, the minis and the pie pumpkins. After that they receive the most orders for the Crystal Star, a large white pumpkin, the Fairytale, which is green and turns buckskin, and the Cinderella.
Her favorite pie? Pumpkin, of course. She says the best pumpkin to cook with is the Cheddar variety.

Unusued pumpkins are good for fertilizer and cows. The website is done by the Pyle’s son-in-law, a software engineer in Amarillo. “We try to keep it in the family,” Paula says. “I pay him in babysitting.”

Paula Pyle says the best way to preserve a pumpkin is to keep it out of the sun. The Fairytale and Porcelain Doll varieties last the longest, especially if you keep them in the house. “I had one that I threw out in March because I was tired of looking at it,” Paula says.

WHAT STARTED AS A BACKYARD PASTIME BECAME A DESTINATION, BUT NOW THE BLOOM IS GONE
NANCY PIERCE, “THE TEXAS ROSE LADY” OF TULIP LANE, has left the neighborhood — and she’s taking all 225 of her rose bushes with her.
After 21 years, she’s moving. Bulldozers are removing her 1953 ranch-style house, and she’s donating 200 rose bushes to the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, taking the most coveted of her collection with her to a new home.
Preston Hollow neighbors are left wishing they had taken more time to stop and smell her roses.
Pierce’s collection, which was documented by the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Gardens, became a destination. “People would leave me notes, take photos of the roses, tell me their stories and ask for rose growing advice,” she says. “The real joy of my rose garden was

Pierce began raising roses after moving to Georgia. She was trying to grow vegetables, but local critters kept nibbling them. Taking pity on her, her mother suggested she grow roses instead. Six weeks later, the plants bloomed.
When the family moved back to Dallas, Pierce was pregnant with her second son. Her mother created Pierce’s first rose bed, which had about 30 bushes.
“I started digging myself, and we ended up with several beds in the
backyard and my husband said, ‘Why are we doing this in the backyard where no one can see them except us?’ We started tearing up our front yard. We had two small kids. We lived in our little house, and it was the time of our lives.”
Pierce substitute teaches at Good Shepherd Episcopal School. “Folks from Euless-Bedford came to see the roses every year,” she says. “That was motivation for me to grow them for so long.”

She says she’s the only one who touches the flowers. “My husband sprays them for me. But I prune every single one of them.” It takes her about 20 hours to prune them in the spring.
She has an Excel spreadsheet documenting fragrance, form, petal count, vendor and cost. Her husband is 71, she says, and he’s tired of dragging around the sprayer. Two
years ago, she started a note-card business highlighting the photos she’s taken of her roses through the years. She now has five collections of notecards. On the back of each is a fact about the flower.
Pierce’s new passions are herbs, hydrangeas and butterfly gardening. She gives rose talks at gardening clubs and plays poker with her 90-year-old friends.
“One of the reasons I continued to grow the roses for so long is because it touched so many people,” she says. She remembers a neighbor who came over the morning of her mother’s funeral and asked for a flower to place on her grave. “I got the clippers and out we went,” Pierce says. “That was probably the most touching story I’ve had about my rose garden. Now anyone who goes to the Arboretum can enjoy them.”
Local holiday gift guide
Since 1951, Dallas’ horticulture mecca North Haven Gardens has put the city on the map, designing lavish landscapes both big and small. Most notable is the famed DeGolyer Estate, where North Haven Gardens’ founder Ralph Pinkus worked to help establish the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden back in the day.
Sure, North Haven Gardens is widely known for incredible plant selection, plant education, workshops and garden coaching for newbies. But neighbors talk up North Haven Garden’s gift shop, a quiet mother-lode of finds for that special person all year long. With the holidays – or just a regular Tuesday – approaching, General Manager Cody Hoya says North Haven Garden’s gift shop items are anything but ho-ho-hum.
Hoya says North Haven Gardens’ third annual Holiday Art and Gift Market Saturday, Dec. 1, is a primo opportunity to score especially unique items. Nearly 40 local artisans will be onsite offering handmade items such as original ceramics, textiles, paper goods, wall art and quilts, for starters. The event, slated from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., features live music and samples from the Gardens’ Café.
SOY CANDLES
USA-made Flaire soy candles featuring garden-inspired fragrances bring the outdoors inside. Choose from rosemary mint, orange clove, fresh fig, citrus coriander, cactus & sea salt, or bamboo.

A variety of handmade cards from local artists are available. Some are inspired by the Japanese tradition of wabi-sabi, the art of appreciating detail in found objects and honoring the beauty in every day. Other selections, also USA made, celebrate traditions and modern living.

THANKSGIVING PRESTON HOLLOW-STYLE
SHOW GRATITUDE WITH THESE NEIGHBORHOOD IDEAS
When it comes to the holidays, there’s giving thanks and then there’s amazing grace.
We asked neighborhood professionals for help. Eduardo “Lalo” Ramirez, executive chef of Lover’s Seafood & Market, starts each Thanksgiving morning with restaurant team members playing soccer against co-owner colleagues at Shinsei Restaurant. Sons Joseph, 13, and Derek, 9, join in. (Shinsei usually wins.) They have tamales after the game and then go home to prepare the meal. He and wife, Sujey, cook together at home for the holiday.
Meanwhile, restaurateur Jon Alexis of TJ’s Seafood says, “I always think of Thanksgiving as kind of like the first big fall meal. It’s about fall vegetables and fall herbs. All summer in Texas,

we want to eat meals that cool us down. By the time Thanksgiving rolls around, I want food that sticks to my ribs and warms my belly.”
At home, Jim Severson, owner of Sevy’s Grill, roasts a 20-pound turkey with herbs. He also prepares gravy and brown-butter mashed potatoes. His brother Mark makes “stuffin’ muffins,” a variety of dressings baked in muffin tins. This technique offers crisp edges and variety, including sausage and cornbread. Brother-inlaw Brad is a cranberry-relish expert, offering up half a dozen types.
Alexis suggests serving beef tenderloin or seafood. “We love that people think of seafood on the Thanksgiving table: shrimp, oyster stuffing, crawfish dressing – those are all delicious things.”
Story by TAYLOR ADAMS Photography by DANNY FULGENCIOWHAT TO EAT
Ramirez, who is from Mexico City, suggests that you lead with the sides. Turkey is served at Christmas rather than at Thanksgiving in his family. He showcases apple salad with pineapple, enchiladas with roast chicken and tomatillo salsa and roasted sweet potatoes with marshmallow.
WHAT TO DRINK
“The nice thing about the Thanksgiving table is there are so many bold flavors that there are no wrong answers,” Alexis says.
Drink what you like, whether that’s a medium red, an oaky chardonnay or a locally brewed lager.
“The spicy notes in whiskey are beautiful with Thanksgiving,” Alexis says. “Have fun with seasonal cocktails. Make a pitcher of cranberry old-fashioneds. Play with the ingredients of the Thanksgiving meal.
“If you like cab, drink cab. It’s a happy day. People should drink what they like.”
HOW TO FAKE IT
There may be negative connotations with having takeout for Thanksgiving. But in 2018, it’s time for that perception to change. At least, that’s what Joanie Thompson has learned from the clients of Preston Hollow Catering.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230621181227-02eff30a6b0cbf60750fe274b0bbee15/v1/8d72c3a2cf50660e9a140742f4ff003a.jpeg)
“Many people started doing this with us years ago and said, ‘This year I just can’t do it. This will be my only year.’ Then year after year after year, they say, ‘How would I have ever
thought about doing that myself?’ ” Thompson says.
Eighty percent of the catering business’ Thanksgiving orders are repeat customers.
Plenty of places provide entire meals or portions of the meals to go — Eatzi’s or Central Market, for example.
Preston Hollow Catering takes the “wholemeal-deal-or-nothing approach” with turkey, the sides, rolls and pies.
“People love it. They enjoy their lives with their family instead of cooking,” she says.
MAKE IT LOOK ELEGANT
“Bring out all your china and your things that you just sit on during the year,” says Kristen Larkin of Larkin Events and Weddings. “Make it look like an inviting table.”
Larkin, who does much of her work in the Preston Hollow area, suggests a fall scent. Bring water to a boil with orange, pineapple and lemon; add a cinnamon stick and cloves to the mixture, then let it simmer all day.
That adds to the sensual appeal.
“Having a beautiful centerpiece on the table is important. That can be a shelled-out pumpkin with blooming mums or some candles,” she says. “Have the floral start at your front door. Use the same floral at your table outside, greeting your guests. Walking in, they’re hit with that scent, then they see the table.”
Karen Elizabeth Watts contributed to this story.Roasted sweet potatoes are a standard holiday recipe in the U.S., but Chef Ramirez says in Mexico the dish is considered dessert.
