THE Hands of Exp E ri E nc E

Improving Dallas Neighborhoods for Over 50 Years

Dallas’ historic homes – and many landmark businesses – are in some of the area’s most experienced hands with The Burke Company. Since its founding in 1959, the design, build, remodel firm has won numerous national awards for its work in Dallas neighborhoods. Groups as prestigious as the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and various industry publications have recognized their work over the years. Owner Jason Asmar is a Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and Project Developer Abby Keyes is a Certified Green Professional (CGP) and Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) with NAHB. These certifications affirm The Burke Company’s dedication to providing homeowners with the highest levels of integrity and quality – from pre-construction planning to project management to saving

money down the road. With in-house designers, architects, builders and project managers like Keyes and construction veteran Clay Knight, The Burke Company is uniquely able to manage projects seamlessly from start to finish, with an emphasis on communication and strong personal relationships. Says Asmar, “We treat each project like it were our own home and neighborhood. We are able to make our clients’ modern visions a reality while maintaining the historic integrity of the building and the whole neighborhood.” The Burke Company is known for its respect to the surrounding homes throughout a project. “We know how important our work is to the homeowner as well as their neighbors,” says Asmar. “On each of our projects, the whole neighborhood is in good hands.”

BACK OF THE GROCERY LINE, AGAIN

STUDIES SHOW THAT I’LL BE A REPEAT VICTIM OF LINE JUMPING

A few months ago, I wrote a column about ethics, or what I perceived to be lack thereof, in the grocery store checkout line.

Without belaboring the point, I talked about how I was waiting in a long line when a checker opened the line next door; a free-for-all of people jumping from the back of the current line to the front of the new one ensued, and I wound up exactly where I was originally (stuck in a long line) and with a bit of a sour attitude.

Quite a few of you emailed and called me with your thoughts. Many were sympathetic and, as fellow line-jumping victims, glad to hear the problem didn’t just happen to them.

Several suggested I should have contacted the store manager and set in motion a series of events that might have freed the cashier to take control of the situation next time, rather than letting the inmates run the asylum.

A few were less sympathetic, indicating that maybe I needed to “man up” and move more quickly next time; otherwise, I should just keep my mouth shut.

And a few suggested that what happened deserved something akin to armed rebellion, and that at a minimum, I should have confronted the offenders right then and there to teach them a lesson.

MAKE

Lose

As it happens, I did nothing then, and I’m still queasy about doing something “next time”. After reading a recent study conducted by the Josephson Institute of Ethics, however, I suspect there will be a next time. And a next time. And a next time ...

The Josephson study, which surveys more than 40,000 high school students every two years, attempts to identify the ethics and integrity of our country’s students and, by extension, the direction of our country’s honesty and morals.

I’ll let you digest these facts from the survey:

• 59 percent of high school students say they cheated on a test during the past year;

• 21 percent of students say they have stolen from a parent or relative;

• 80 percent say they lied to a parent about “something significant”; and

• 92 percent of these same high school students say they’re satisfied with their own personal ethics and character.

So one in five students has stolen from a parent, four of five have lied to a parent, and three of five have cheated on a test. But nine out of 10 believe their lives still exemplify good morals, ethics and character.

There are a lot of things I could say about what it means when 90 percent of students believe they’re honest even as almost all of those same students have lied to their parents and most of them have cheated (and probably lied about that, too!).

But there’s really not much I can add to this discussion from my perch at the back of the grocery store checkout line, watching people push by to beat me to the newly opened line next door.

I’m starting to think that even if I open my mouth to complain next time, most offenders won’t understand why I’m upset because they don’t consider what they’re doing a breach of ethics, integrity or simple manners.

If they weren’t brought up to understand what they’re doing is wrong, nothing I say is going to change their minds.

As Election Day approaches May 14, Advocate editor Emily Toman and publisher Rick Wamre sit down with each of the major candidates for an Advocate video podcast series, going further than the 30-second sound bite to help reveal more about the candidates in an unedited discussion. In several short segments, we explore the big issues with District 12 Councilman Ron Natinsky, former police chief David Kunkle and former park board president Mike Rawlings. Visit prestonhollow.advocatemag.com/elections to find all of our 2011 election coverage, from city council to Dallas ISD, along with commentary from Advocate contributing editor Jeff Siegel.

HANDICAPPING THE MAYOR’S RACE: YARD SIGN EDITION

Drove around Dallas north of Northwest Highway for 90 minutes on Sunday in search of mayoral campaign yard signs. We’ve had several discussions over the years about whether yard signs matter; the general consensus seems to be that they’re one indication of who is doing better than someone else. In this case, I learned that if yard signs matter, this election is a huge yawner.

“ THE ONLY REASON THAT A POTHOLE DOESN’T GET FILLED IN DALLAS IS SOMEBODY DOESN’T CALL IN TO REPORT IT. ”

After a massive heart attack at a small town trade fair, Melvin Jones was rushed to a nearby hospital. His heart had suffered major damage. “They determined that I needed to go to Baylor for further care, which turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me,” Melvin says. It took four years for a heart to become available, but when it did, the Baylor transplant team had him in the operating room within hours. The transplant has given Melvin a second chance at life. It was like being reborn. “I’ve been very fortunate to be around for the birth of my five grandchildren. I’m back to being able to do what I like to do all day long.”

Each Monday on the Back Talk blog, we bring you Restaurant Talk, highlighting new neighborhood gems or reminiscing about old favorites. Here are a few recent excerpts:

03.14 RESTAURANT TALK: GOFF’S HAMBURGERS

Most people, especially those who have lived in Dallas all their lives, have probably been to Goff’s Hamburgers at some point. I’m not one of those people – well, I wasn’t until a few days ago when I stopped by the 60-year-old burger joint to try it out. I guess the food has been quite consistent to remain open for all those decades. However, I hear that back in the ’70s, they refused to serve “rebellious” teens with long hair. At least that’s what one colleague of mine said when I asked if he’d been to Goff’s, and he hasn’t returned since being kicked out as a kid. But I’m pretty sure scruffy teens are welcome now. —EMILY

03.07 RESTAURANT TALK: TRY THESE DESSERTS

We have no shortage of sweet shops in Preston Hollow, and if you haven’t tried the desserts at these few, now’s the time. Creme de la Cookie at Preston and Royal has introduced French macaroons, which are almond flour-based instead of coconut based. So, they’re good for our gluten-free friends. Blue Mesa Grill has debuted three new desserts: dark chocolate empanadas with sangria sauce, guajillo-apple pan dowdy with dulce de leche ice cream and sweet potato pan dulces with roasted banana, dark chocolate and dulce de leche fondue.

AVANCE HELPS STRUGGLING DISD FAMILIES, VICKERY MEADOW RESIDENTS

In the March Lake Highlands Advocate we wrote about how homeowners in neighborhoods such as Lake Highlands, East Dallas and Preston Hollow can assist residents of neighboring community Vickery Meadow, which is perhaps Dallas’ highest density and most crime-ridden neighborhood. It is home to 36,000 people, many of them school-aged children.

We visited Hotchkiss Elementary, a DISD school in the Lake Highlands area that offers the Avance program. Avance holds preschool for children — Vickery Meadow is shockingly lacking in preschools — and classes for parents.

A 24-year-old mom at Hotchkiss Elementary told us that Avance changed her life and the way she values her family.

“The most important thing I learned in Avance is that I am my child’s first teacher,” Paula Sanchez says, “and that you only have one life to enjoy time with your children. Now we spend time together. I read to them. I never used to do that. I realize now that they need me.”

The North Dallas Early Childhood PTA has partnered with Avance, and we are so impressed with the programs they create with their mothers. Just like our group, we all want our children to succeed and thrive in the future. I would encourage anyone thinking about volunteering to consider Avance.

—BROOKE GREEN, VIA

LAUNCH

Home is where people should feel most comfortable, especially when it comes to the bedroom and bathroom. Preston Hollow resident JOLIE CARPENTER has found the best of the best in interior design across the state and showcases them in her latest book, “Beautiful Bedrooms and Baths of Texas”. Readers might be surprised to discover much more than the traditional — and stereotypical — ranch-style home. This is Carpenter’s eighth title highlighting Texas, and in addition to being on the cutting edge of interior design, she has also written a children’s book to help kids deal with one of America’s growing issues.

Where did you find your knack for interior design?

My major in college was interior design. It’s always been my passion. I love furniture, art, fabric, lighting. I always redecorated my room growing up. My degree is in communications from Texas Tech [University]. I feel grateful now because interior designers have to deal with the cranky homeowners. I get to deal with all the fun stuff.

How did you choose the homes for this book?

I keep my finger on the pulse of what’s going on. I know a lot of people in the industry. I find these through networking. I keep up with who has won awards. I try to keep myself in the know. It’s like fashion — it changes all the time. I do see a lot of people with talent who have been grandfathered in. And they’re not housewives that have so much money. These are women who are super talented. And men. Interior designers are like musicians — you either have it or don’t.

WHAT MAKES TEXAS HOME DESIGN SO UNIQUE?

One thing that shocks people is how modern and contemporary these homes are. There’s a misconception about Texas having old, ranch-style homes. This book shows that our designs are as good or better than those around the country. They’re keeping up with what’s going on. I love to have a variety of styles. People pick these up for inspiration — from small, high-rise apartments to sprawling mansions. Some people are intimidated by this book and may think that it’s for people who are wealthy. But that’s not true. There are plenty of things you can do that don’t cost a lot of money.

WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF LOW-COST DESIGN?

The use of paint and lighting. Anyone can paint a wall, and it can change the whole mood. Take a color you love, and slap it on the wall. Be bold, and surround yourself with what you love.

HOW DOES ALL OF THIS PLAY INTO YOUR OWN PERSONAL DESIGN?

I have colors I feel comfortable in. I like whites and neutrals. I think your surroundings affect you. The homes of my aunts, grandmother and myself were nothing fancy [growing up]. I use the resources around me.

YOU’VE ALSO WRITTEN AND PUBLISHED A CHILDREN’S BOOK, “CHANGE IS OKAY WITH KACIE SHAY”. WHAT INSPIRED THAT?

That’s my little pet project. Kacie is my niece. She thinks she’s famous now because her name is on the cover of a book. I wrote it when my sister got a divorce. It’s for all the kids whose parents have divorced. To show them that, if they’re ever in Kacie’s shoes, things will get better. I plan to write another children’s book, a series about caring for animals.

BEFORE/ Several traditional ranch-style homes in North Dallas have one — a solarium designed to create an “outdoor-in” style. But the 1960s trend became outdated and impractical for Preston Hollow residents KEN AND LISA MILLER . They have lived in the 3,600-square-foot house for seven years with their three children who attend St. Rita Catholic School, Jesuit Preparatory School and Bishop Lynch High School. “It was wonderful in that it let in lots of natural light,” Ken says. “But it was space that we never used.” And that wasn’t the only problem. Rodents would scurry around on the roof and fall into the open space. “We had flying squirrels,” he says. “And they couldn’t get out, so I would have to go trap them and set them free.” Precipitation also cluttered the area, causing a constant chore for the Millers. They aren’t sure what purpose solariums served decades ago, but Christy Ricketts with Servant Remodeling speculates that people might have used it as a smoking area. “No homebuilder would recommend that today,” she says.

AFTER/ Both Ken and Lisa work from home, so it made sense to replace the solarium with an office. That also freed up space for their two daughters, who had been sharing a room. The remodelers removed the bulky stone pillars surrounding the solarium and enclosed the space with glass and wood paneling. They lifted the roof and lined the sides with windows. This way the family has more square footage while retaining natural light. Bookshelves extend about 12 feet up the wall, and the room is about 19 feet high. “We think it looks more like an office and a library,” Ken says. For its work on the Miller house, Servant Remodeling won the 2010-2011 Contractor of the Year Award from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry Greater Dallas Chapter for a residential addition under $100,000. The Millers also renovated their living room, foyer and master bathroom. —EMILY TOMAN

GREEK OUT

PEOPLE VISIT TO STRATOS GREEK TAVERN for the authentic cuisine — from the standard gyro to the grilled kabobs and gourmet moussaka. “Before you know it, everyone is jumping on the tables,” owner Nick Rizos says. That’s because at night, the restaurant transforms into a vivacious nightclub, complete with a DJ, belly dancers and shouts of “Opa!” filling the air. Rizos, a native of Nafpaktos, Greece, has been in the local restaurant scene since 1970, starting with Olympic Pizza on Greenville Avenue where he says he introduced the gyro to Dallas. Rizos says Americans’ love for Greek food comes naturally, considering that the main ingredients of nearly every dish are olive oil, garlic, oregano and lemon. “Everyone loves those spices.” While most entrees range $10-$15, the restaurant offers regular specials, including half-price dinner on Mondays and Tuesdays and half-price wines after 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Sundays. As you can see from the road, Rizos designed the two-story patio out front, which makes for pleasant open-air dining. “In Greece, everyone eats outside,” he says. —EMILY TOMAN

it’s not all the same

KING ESTATE SIGNATURE PINOT NOIR ($30) OREGON >

There’s an old joke among people who don’t like red wine: The reason they don’t like it is because all red wine tastes the same.

These days, that’s become less joke and more truth. For any number of reasons, American red wine is becoming blander. There’s less varietal character in the wine and more of a one-sizefits-all style, where merlot tastes like cabernet sauvignon, and pinot noir tastes like syrah.

I noticed this when putting together the 2011 $10 Hall of Fame. Too many wines, particularly those from California and particularly if they were red, were flabby and dull. That’s also eminent wine writer Dan Berger’s conclusion, and he has written extensively about this change.

“It’s about playing it safe,” Berger says, “and about wholesalers and retailers needing to sell wine. It’s about getting that 85 as a score, which is like manna from heaven if you’re trying to sell wine.”

So what do you do if you want wines to taste like what they’re supposed to taste like? Try these, which are good examples of wine with varietal character:

• Most inexpensive Italian wines, which still taste like they came from Italy. Consider the Falesco Vitiano Rosso (about $12), a red blend.

• Pinot noir from Oregon. This can be pricey, but is usually worth the cost. I especially like King Estate’s Signature pinot (about $30).

• Many French producers, faced with too much wine to sell, have really improved the quality of their products. Look for La Vieille Ferme Rouge (about $8), which not that long ago wasn’t all that well-made. These days, though, it’s a red blend that tastes like it was made from the grapes used to make it.

ask the WINE GUY?

Q. WHAT IS “SPICY”, WHICH I HEAR USED TO DESCRIBE WINES? HOW CAN SOMETHING MADE WITH GRAPES BE SPICY?

A. Spicy includes flavors and aromas such as pepper and cinnamon. These flavors can come from the grapes (mostly red) used to make the wine, and the winemaker brings them out during the winemaking process. But many spicy flavors are also imparted from the oak used to age the wine.

Cornish hens with lemon and balsamic vinegar

This is about as simple as dinner gets, and uses the balsamic vinegar that most of us have, but have forgotten about. Cutting the hen’s backbone is much easier than it sounds, and the broiler in a toaster oven works well. The hens and a well-made pinot noir, like the King Estate, are a nice match.

Serves four, 30-40 minutes (adapted from Mark Bittman)

2 Cornish hens

2 lemons

2 Tbsp best quality balsamic vinegar salt and pepper to taste

1. Preheat a broiler and adjust a rack so it’s 4 inches from the heat source.

2. Use a sturdy pair of scissors, and cut the hen at the backbone. It should cut without any trouble at all. Flatten each hen and put them in a broiling or roasting pan, skin side down. Liberally sprinkle the exposed surfaces with salt and pepper. Slice one of the lemons as thinly as possible, and put the slices on the hens.

3. Broil for 10 minutes or until the lemon is browned and the hens appear cooked (they’ll start to brown). Flip the birds over (including the lemon slices) and season the skin side with salt and pepper. Return to the broiler and cook for 10 minutes until the skin is nicely browned.

4. Pull the hens out. Slice the remaining lemon, and put it on the hens. Put it back under the broiler, and cook five minutes until the lemons start to brown. Drizzle with the balsamic and serve.

How a Hillcrest Forest couple updated their abode to adjust to life as empty nesters

26 APRIL 2011 prestonhollow.advocatemag.com
STORY BY Emily Toman PHOTOS BY Benjamin Hager

You won’t find a sofa in Bruce and Cindy Bernbaum’s living room — only a clean, artistic style that they previously couldn’t sustain amid their daughters’ dance practices and sleepovers.

bruce Bernbaum remembers the day he moved into his new house.

He was hot and tired after shuffling boxes around, so he decided to try out the steam shower — a 4-by-5-foot area of blue slate that continues up the wall, making the space appear even larger.

As he let the hot water run over him, he reveled in the joy of what he had just accomplished: a new home, perfectly personalized for him and his wife, Cindy, as they embarked on a new phase — life after kids.

“I just stood there and started giggling,” he says.

Of course, the Bernbaums love their two daughters, Abby and Zoe, who have gone

on to college after attending Kramer Elementary, Franklin Middle School and Hillcrest High. But Bruce and Cindy also love coming home to a quiet, uncluttered house free of chaos. So in spring 2009, after their youngest headed to the University of Texas, Bruce began sketching out designs to de-baby proof their home and incorporate a more sophisticated artistic style, updating the kitchen and expanding their master bedroom and bath.

“We made a decision to stay here and make it more comfortable for us,” he says about their mid-century modern home located within walking distance of the Jewish Community Center and North

Haven Gardens.

Bruce is an architect by trade with his own firm, Bernbaum Magadini Architects. But that doesn’t mean he’s immune to the challenges that come with a major renovation.

‘Remodelcide’

Bruce has a word for it — that sinking feeling you get when you realize you’ve wholly committed to having your rooms gutted and the floor torn apart. It’s remodel suicide, or “remodelcide”. But it doesn’t have to be that stressful, he says.

“Stuff is going to happen, and it’s how you deal with it. We don’t have any preconceived notions about how the

house should be designed.”

Take, for instance, the Bernbaums’ air conditioning debacle. The house, which was built around 1956, had an AC system that ran underneath the foundation. When they decided to replace the flooring, they discovered that the ductwork had collapsed.

Solution: Drop down the ceilings and re-install the AC there. Crisis averted. Luckily, they contracted out all of the major construction.

“We’re not stupid enough to do that [ourselves],” Bruce says.

But you can find Bruce’s design vision all around the house, which is lined completely with windows on the east side to merge the indoors with the outdoors. Make no mistake — this is a house for adults. The spacious living room has clean modern lines and no sofa — only a large, glass dining room table for dinner parties.

“We love to entertain,” Cindy says. “We’re trying things that we want to try. Like art.”

living room, including a sculpture by George Tobolowsky and landscape prints by Jim Doughty and James Surls, who has exhibited at the Meadows Museum.

The Bernbaums had their kitchen completely gutted, bought new appliances and installed a green marble countertop for a splash of color.

A few feet down the hallway is a high-traffic area that has gone from playroom to dance room to den. That’s where the girls spent most of their time while living at home, but Bruce and Cindy took back some of the space by cutting off seven feet of the den to expand their master bath on the other side of the wall.

Considering they would have fewer clothes to wash, they converted the laundry room to an office where Bruce showcases his miniature model trains, which line the walls inside glass cases. He has been collecting since 1985.

“I’m fascinated by the detail of the trains,” he says.

Only an architect could be so detailoriented.

The Bernbaums’ new steam shower benefits from the extra square footage in the master bathroom. Before, they could barely turn around and

Born and raised in North Dallas, Bruce became interested in architecture at age 15. He spent half of the day attending W.T. White High School for regular subjects and the other half at Skyline High School, which had just begun offering career classes, including architecture.

Bruce has redesigned several extravagant Preston Hollow homes, but his more modest, 2,300-square-foot abode proves that bigger isn’t always better.

“It’s about how a space can be used differently,” he says.

But it also comes down to small, functional details, such as giving Cindy a vanity where she could plug in both her hairdryer and straightener at the same time.

“That was the one thing I had to have,” Cindy says.

The next phase

No more teenagers traipsing through the house. No more rushing to dance practice. And no more girl drama. Now that life has slowed down for Bruce and Cindy, the two spend most of their time cooking dinner and watching their favorite television shows.

“After the girls moved out, we got HBO and Showtime. We call ourselves ‘TV-stupid’,” Bruce says.

And their new kids are two dachshunds, Tamale and Lola, who have the run of the house. The Bernbaums still miss their daughters but enjoy the calm.

“I was prepared,” Cindy says about the girls’ departure. “It’s bittersweet when your kids go off to college. You want them to have those experiences. You’ve done your job, and you’re happy for them. You always miss them.

“It just feels so good, even when you’ve had a bad day, to come home and there’s not chaos. It’s refreshing. I can remember when the girls were here, and we used every inch of this house. We love our kids; we’re just at a different point in our lives.”

Bruce came to terms with his daughters’ independence a long time ago — as soon as they turned 16.

“You see them drive off, and you know that they can fend for themselves.” n

How one modern family is turning heads in Northaven Park

On the outside, the mid-century modern home looks like any other on the block. But the curvy black-and-white checkered walkway in front hints at the creativity inside.

Some neighbors even walk up and knock on the door just to sneak a peek.

“I always tell people, if you want to know what the inside of my head looks like, come see my house,” says Justin Crake, who owns the home with Kyle Schmid and Wolfe Kennedy.

The biggest element here is color. Shades of blue, green and yellow gush from the dining and living room floors but in a clean, square design.

Circular orange patterns trickle down the hallway, and Crake’s large, dynamic anime paintings line the walls of the entire house.

“It’s vibrant. It makes you feel happy,” he says.

The guys remodeled the house themselves, leaving no trace of its brutal backstory. Built in 1959, the home appeared in the Dallas Morning News as “the house of the future”. The original owner sold it to someone who then rented it out, and the last tenants completely trashed the place, Schmid says. Overgrown landscaping covered the exterior, and the swimming pool had turned black. They left behind carpet stains throughout

the house along with an overwhelming stench. Schmid says it took four 40-yard dumpsters to transport all the trash inside. As for that foul smell — a dead possum turned up in the master bedroom closet.

“This was the worst house on the block,” he says. “We just saw what it could be.”

First, Schmid knocked down the walls surrounding the dining room, opening everything up so that the kitchen, dining and living rooms meet. After ripping

“Japanese mangas came to South Africa long before it came to America,” ing with extreme facial expressions, action and, of course, lots of color. In fact, the guys based the entire design of the house on one anime painting — a close-up figure of a man’s face with orange and green undertones. It hangs near the kitchen, which has green walls and orange cabinetry. Only the vintage 1950s oven remains the same for an interesting contrast to the ultramodern home. n

EASTER IN EAST GERMANY

A HOLIDAY DEFINED BY PRAYERFUL PROTESTERS

INSTEAD OF CHOCOLATE BUNNIES

Easter Sunday will come in this month of April, the twenty-fourth. That’s almost the latest Easter can be (the latest is April 25).

In case you didn’t know or have forgotten, the First Council of Nicea (325 A.D.) set the date of Easter by the lunar calendar: It falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the northern hemisphere’s vernal equinox, the first day of Spring.

One April day, while standing in line at the grocery store, I overheard a man ask his wife, “Does Easter fall on a Sunday this year?”

If that was your husband, give him a copy of this article!

I’ll spend this month of April thinking once again about the meaning of this Easter celebration. I’ll try to get past the chocolate bunnies, the baby chicks and the accoutrements of the season, once again to plumb the deeper meaning of the day. I’ll try to take in the most audacious claim of my faith — that God has broken one of the most immutable of divine laws, and brought life out of death.

One of the greatest moments of the 20th century has to be the fall of the Berlin Wall. A case can be made that what brought down the wall was the power of Easter. It all began in the Kikolai Protestant Church in Leipzig, East Germany, when the pastor of that church, Kristian Fuehrer, decided that it was time the Christian church stopped — in his words — “diluting its message.” So his church started holding prayer meetings on Monday evenings, meetings that began by expressing the Easter theme that “all things are possible” with God.

Within a short time, the pastor said that the people who were praying encountered “in our services and meetings, the miraculous experience of feeling the effect of the Word.” God’s presence “was with us. It was with ... all of us,” and soon the number of pray-ers swelled to more than 200,000 people, 90 percent of whom were non-Christians but were drawn by this Easter energy. Those pray-ers poured out of the meeting one fateful Monday evening to protest in the streets, shouting, “We are the

People!” and in doing so created the movement that toppled the Berlin Wall.

When Pastor Fuehrer was asked why the people hadn’t felt God’s presence that strongly before, he theorized that it was because the church had been seduced by what he called “the [middle class] image of Jesus as one who doesn’t disturb, who is only passive,” the Jesus whose only goal was to make people vaguely

happy. But through prayer and study, he said that the members of those prayer meetings found a different kind of Jesus — a “Jesus who spoke the truth directly to the people” rather than a Jesus who diluted the truth. They found in the resurrected Jesus the power to dream new dreams for their city and their nation.

And through that resurrection power, our world was changed forever.

As I reflect this year on Easter Day, I’ll ask myself once again how its message might change the world — again.

The Victim: Johnnie Shackelford

The Crime: Auto accessory theft

Date: Monday, Feb. 7

Time: Between 12:45 p.m. and 9:15 p.m.

Location: 8500 block of Thackery

THE CROOK POPPED OFF THE TAILGATE AND FLED.

Johnnie Shackelford describes herself as a people person. She has worked in home health care with a retirement community in Preston Hollow for several years. She enjoys her job and working within elderly residents in the area.

“I like helping people,” she says. “It’s a personal job, and if you don’t like that, it’s not for you.”

It was while doing what she loves, serving others, that she became a victim.

“I went to leave and go home and my tailgate was missing,” she says.

Shackelford drives a Ford F-150, and was furious at the violation of her personal property. The loss will cost several hundred dollars to replace. The incident was the first time Shackelford has been the victim of a crime.

“I was upset; I was livid,” she says of seeing the void left by the missing tailgate. “I wish someone would find the tailgate and return it to me, but I know that’s probably not going to happen.”

Dallas Police Lt. Barry Payne of the North Central Patrol Division says this type of crime is one of many types of auto accessory crimes that can be a real nuisance to citizens.

“This happens fairly regularly and really, there is not a lot one can do other than the standard security recommendations like parking in safe locations and secure garages,” Payne says. “One additional recommendation would be to engrave the VIN of the vehicle somewhere on the tailgate in a non-obvious place. Thieves who take these tailgates sell them to body shops and people who need to replace their tailgates that were stolen.”

For those concerned about these types of crime or who may have been victimized in the past, Payne says certain auto accessory stores sell aftermarket tailgate locks that can prevent thieves from actually opening the tailgate.
