Among giants, a compact-car owner risks road rage

As I pulled up to the intersection in my relatively small and low-slung car, stopping just short of the crosswalk, I glanced to my left to see if the coast was clear enough to make a right turn on red.

But when I glanced left, I didn’t see a couple of cars barreling down on me. Nor did I see a completely empty street devoid of cars and pedestrians.

Instead, I was looking into the bottom door panel of a huge, white pickup truck, with my eyes essentially at crotch level of the driver, who as far as I know had absolutely no idea I was even there.

The truck driver had pulled the nose of his vehicle over the crosswalk; there were no pedestrians here, so I didn’t have a big

He also was driving a tall, jacked-up pickup truck, so he could see just fine through and over the truck on my left. Apparently, no one was approaching the intersection, so he thought I needed to get moving.

His leaning on the horn didn’t sit well with me. From his perch high in the sky overlooking the top of my car, he probably had no idea that I couldn’t see a thing and would be risking my insurance premium, not to mention the front of my car, by blindly pulling into the intersection.

For a moment, I thought about putting my car in park, popping out of the driver’s door and walking back to visit with my impatient neighbor as we waited for the light to change.

It was just a brief moment, though, because my thoughts also quickly turned dramatic: Maybe he legally carried a gun and might see my approach as threatening.

problem with his positioning. It’s just that the size of his vehicle (or, depending on your perspective, the size of mine) kept me from seeing anything except shiny white paint.

I was content to sit and wait for the green light; something interesting was on KERA, and I wasn’t in a big hurry.

The guy behind me had other ideas, though.

He leaned on the horn a couple of times, clearly needing to be somewhere 30 seconds more quickly than he was going to with me blocking his way.

In fact, I could imagine the excitement at 6 and 10 as local newscasters talked about the meaningless shooting, with no one having any idea why a quiet, unassuming dude like me would block an intersection and threateningly approach another driver. Given the chance that I might not be around to explain my actions, I thought better of exiting the car.

So I just endured what I assumed was the angry glare of the driver behind me, because I really couldn’t see much above the grill of his pickup.

The light mercifully turned green, and all three of us headed off to our respective destinations. The guy next to me probably was unaware. The guy behind me raced past me after we both turned. I continued on, wondering what else I could have done to make him understand I had no options.

There’s no lesson here that I can discern, nothing else I could have done to make things better, except perhaps to own a taller vehicle.

Maybe it was all just the product of a steaming, hot summer day in Dallas.

Q+A: Norma Valles

preston Hollow resident Norma Valles will sing the national anthem for thousands of baseball fans at the rangers game on Sept. 15, which also marks the start of Hispanic Heritage month. Valles is a recording artist, a wife and mother of three, as well as a co-owner of the tex-mex restaurant Nueva Casita, near Northwest Highway and Greenville. every Saturday night from 7-10 p.m., Valles performs mariachi music at her restaurant. the Advocate had lunch with Valles, to talk about how her family business and singing career began.

When did you first start singing?

When I was little, my grandpa would sit me on his lap and play his three-stringed guitar and sing songs at family get-togethers. He won my heart.

How did you get started singing professionally?

Back in the late 1990s I had a friend who entered me into a singing contest without me knowing about it.

Were you upset?

I was nervous, but I sang in the contest anyways and ended up winning the mariachi category of the competition. Backstage I was so overwhelmed that I missed the announcer call my name as the overall winner. I beat out over 40 other performing bands. The overall cash prize was $200, and I was so excited.

Did winning the contest help your career?

Yes. For the next several years, I performed at different restaurants and was asked to do voice-overs, record music and sing the national anthem for both the Dallas Mavericks and the Texas Rangers. I also performed with the Tejano group Grupo Cariño.

Was it hard for you as a woman to break into the typically maledominated world of Tejano and mariachi music?

It was easier with mariachi. The Tejano band wanted me to dress like a man and not wear my dress. I had to stand in the back during our performances. In the end I left the group and stayed with mariachi. I can sing and I am friendly, so I think that’s what helps me get along well with other mariachi performers.

Earlier this year, there was some backlash against 11-year-old Sebastien De La Cruz when he sang the national anthem in his mariachi outfit during the NBA finals. Some people accused him of being unAmerican. Was that hard to watch?

I didn’t understand it. When I sing the national anthem at the Rangers stadium, they ask me to wear my mariachi outfit. It’s an

honor to sing the national anthem. I do it because I believe in my country, I love it, and I am proud to be an American of Hispanic descent.

So how did you get into the restaurant business?

The previous restaurant owner fell into hard times financially, and my friend David Albert was the property owner and truly did not want to see the restaurant fail. It was called Casita Dominguez at the time, and it had been around since the 1960s. In December, David asked if I would help co-own the restaurant with him and his wife, Ginette. I didn’t want the employees to be out of a job before the Christmas holiday, so I said yes.

Did you have any experience with the restaurant industry?

No, and it is a very tough industry. I feel like in life you choose to sink or swim, and I’m not going to sink. I’m going to try to do whatever I can to make things work. So in three days, we closed Casita Dominguez, re-hired the employees, and re-opened as Nueva Casita. Fortunately for us, the customers continue to come.

Do you have any interesting regular customers?

We get some former Cowboys players. One night President George W. Bush and Laura dined with some friends at the restaurant. There was lots of security, but they were pretty friendly and relaxed.

What did the former President eat?

Cheese enchiladas.

Does your family work with you?

My husband does all of the maintenance. He can fix anything. My children have helped out a lot, too, but right now they are focusing on their studies at Brookhaven College and Hillcrest High.

Tell me more about your friend, David Albert. How did you meet him?

At a Mavericks game, David loved my rendition of the national anthem and asked if he could meet with me that night. It was the start of a partnership that is still going strong to this day.

What’s he like?

Well, I met him when he was in his 70s — he’s 86 now — but he acts much younger than he is. He is a military veteran, businessman and an entrepreneur at heart. He always encourages me to “throw things against the wall until something sticks.” David is an amazing mentor.

You co-own Nueva Casita with Albert. What other projects have you worked on with him?

I’ve released nine CDs of jazz, mariachi and cover music, including tutorials for Spanish speakers to earn their citizenship and learn English. In the past we manufactured jars of the Nueva Casita salsa and recorded children’s books. Recently, we have been looking for a manufacturer for these really great dish sponges.

Wow, that’s quite a range of projects. You seem like you have another idea that you aren’t even telling us about. [laughs] I can’t say too much, but I did a half marathon this last year, and it has to do with training.

How do you balance your singing career and the restaurant business?

Since the beginning, I wanted the restaurant to give back. On the first Tuesday of every month, I sing patriotic songs and old military songs at the restaurant. We even pass out song sheets. I always end the night by singing “God Bless America.” There’s a bunch of veterans that come out almost every Tuesday to sing along. We donate a portion of our sales back to the nonprofit Defenders of Freedom. I think I’ve only missed two Tuesdays in the past six years.

That’s a cool way to give back.

All of the music and projects I do are to help other people. It’s about being involved and helping the community. I also work with the Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas to help younger women pursue scholarships so they can get into college. You can make all the money in the world, but if you don’t have a good heart, as far as wanting to give back, then there’s no joy in it.

Preston Hollow Village breaks ground

The city has approved plans for the first phase of construction at the northwest corner of Walnut Hill and North Central, which will be developed over the next several years into the Preston Hollow Village. The 42 acres of land will be turned into retail, residential and office buildings.

The first phase includes construction of the building for anchor tenant Trader Joe’s, 46,000 square feet of office space, and more than 60,000 square feet of restaurant retail, says Leon Backes, president of Provident Realty.

Backes calls the location “the gateway to the highest-income areas in Dallas,” adding that the architecture of the development will be clean, timeless and somewhat modern.

He says he has worked closely with the surrounding neighborhoods for years to meet their requirements.

“The neighbors didn’t want big-box retailers, and they wanted the property to be mixed-use development, so we met those requests,” Backes says. He adds that there will be a tree-lined street with lots of outdoor patios. “It won’t be like anything else in Preston Hollow.”

District 11 Councilman Lee Kleinman says that the neighborhood associa-

tions surrounding Preston Hollow Village, which include Glen Lakes, The Meadows and Windsor Park, created a task force five years ago to have a say about future plans for the land.

The task force worked with the developers to create a complex planned development district (PDD) with several tracts, including restrictions on density, parking, traffic flow and setback specifications.

Kleinman says it’s one of the most specific PDDs in the city that he has seen. He says he’s excited about the project.

“The development will generate new tax revenue for the city and help take some of the burden off of homeowners.” Kleinman says.

Trader Joe’s spokeswoman Allison Mochizuki confirmed that the Trader Joe’s in Preston Hollow Village will open in 2014, but had no additional information about the store.

Next year we’ll also see the beginning of 500 residential units within three separate seven-story towers in the Preston Hollow Village.

Backes says construction will start in the first quarter of 2014, and the units will be amenity-driven, similar to those found in the upscale Turtle Creek neighborhood.

Dec. 21, 2012 — the day the world was supposed to end. And the day Craig Collins, founder of the popular barbecue joint Red, Hot and Blue, opened his latest concept, the South American restaurant Nazca Kitchen. “What have you got to lose, right?” he jokes. As he did with his first venture, Collins brought something relatively new to the neighborhood with Nazca. “When we opened Red, Hot and Blue in 1994, no one ate pork. Now it’s a barbecue staple.” At Nazca, the focus is fresh fish and organic, sustainable, healthful ingredients. It isn’t easy, Collins says, for a North Texas restaurant to obtain fresh seafood. In fact, he’s in the process of attempting to strike a deal with an Alaskan supplier. Fingers crossed. Until then, you can bet Collins and his team will not serve anything that doesn’t look, smell and taste as fresh as anything in the DFW area; this is evidenced in menu items such as the grilled tilapia or roasted half chicken that came recommended by manager Juan Chavez. Culinary creations a quinoa salad tossed in tahini glaze or a butternut-squash-and-cranberry side, for example — leave a lasting, crave-inducing impression. The fish “tacos” with aioli drizzle come wrapped in butter-leaf lettuce that is grown in neat, aesthetic soil rows alongside the eatery. Collins painstakingly selected the wine list. A self-proclaimed “wine geek,” Collins says he tasted 400 wines before narrowing down the 12 available at the Nazca bar.

Cheap is the new pricey

Joel Gott sauvignon blanc ($10) California

This month marks a milestone for the Advocate and cheap wine. In fact, the milestone probably wouldn’t have been possible without the Advocate wine column, which helped demonstrate that consumers are interested in wine that doesn’t cost a lot of money.

Because that interest was one of the first steps in getting to my new book, “The Wine Curmudgeon’s Guide to Cheap Wine,” which will be published later this month. It will be available as an e-book ($9.95) and in paperback ($12.95), and you’ll be able to buy it at the regular online retailers as well as winecurmudgeon.com.

When Advocate founder Rick Wamre asked me to write a wine column some 10 years ago, I wasn’t sure there would be any interest and didn’t expect to be doing it for long. But there was interest; Advocate readers were looking for simple, clearly written advice about wine they could afford to buy. That’s a market that the wine business has traditionally taken for granted, and hence the column’s longevity and the book.

Dough Pizzeria Napoletana

The book focuses on the process of cheap wine. In this, there aren’t any recommendations, which is probably a first for a wine book. That’s what this column and my wine blog are for. The point of the book is to help consumers figure out for themselves what they want, offering common-sense advice about how to make that decision.

This month, then, three of my favorite cheap wines:

100,000+

• Any number of $10 white wines from the French region of Gascony. There are cheap, well-made and offer refreshing grapey and citrus flavors. Look for Domaine du Tariquet and Mont Gravet among many others.

• Sicilian reds and whites, which are practically subversive $10 wine is not supposed to be this interesting. They include Notorius, a white, and the Cusumano red.

• California sauvignon blanc, including Dry Creek, Joel Gott and Benziger, all of which are around $10 and are clean, crisp and tasty.

FOR LIFE Best Friends

A tribute to joyful, loyal, beautiful creatures

It is just an animal ...

an inferior species prone to flea infestation, shoe destruction and squirrel abuse, right? Like other cases of true love, man’s connection to domesticated beast defies logic. Pet behavior — slap-happy romping, guttural purrs of pleasure and exuberant expressions of gratitude in the form of unbridled kisses can inspire profound joy. Conclusively, their companionship can boost the quality of a human life. But no use trying to define how or why humans grow so attached to their fleabags. We would rather show you.

Good luck not falling in love.

Lily

Cory Smith’S life Changed about eight years ago when his mom handed over her tortoiseshell cat, Lily. “My mom was a crazy cat lady and always had it in her heart to rescue the ones who were trapped out,” he says. Smith said he was living alone for the first time in years, and though he was dating his current partner, Brian Garrison, he needed some company. “She was destined to be with us,” Garrison says. “She has great taste. She only lounges on our best throws and loves to barf in my partner’s Italian shoes and the Italian dining room chairs.” Though that part is pretty frustrating, Smith says, 9-year-old Lily is his to keep. Lily also likes to rule another portion of the house, the backyard, where the couple’s 7-year-old Australian shepherd doesn’t use his 67-pound advantage on her as intimidation. “They get along just great,” Smith says. “He’s pretty docile — doesn’t mess with her ever.”

Coco and Abby People’s Choice

This Time of year, “fur sisTers” CoCo and abby spend their days nuzzling on the couch and watching their favorite teams play. Saturdays are dedicated to Aggie football, and Sundays are reserved for the Cowboys. Anna Temple and her husband don’t have children, so she says they treat their labrador retrievers as their kids. Temple and her brother acquired Coco when they lived together. After he moved out and took his dog Shiner with him, Coco became depressed. But Anna’s sister-in-law knew someone whose dog had just had puppies, and Abby entered the picture. Six-yearold Coco suffers from appetite-suppressing allergies, but after the vet recommended that Temple give her a little “people food,” Coco learned what a food coma is. “Sweet potatoes are her absolute favorite thing,” Temple says. Well, that and spaghetti. At 3 years old, Abby is more focused on play than food. She loves to roam the house with her “lovies,” or stuffed toys.

Ashley stephens And her husbAnd were not on the same page when they first met. “I’m a vegetarian, and I love animals more than anything in the world. I grew up with pets. My husband is the exact opposite,” Stephens says. “When I first met him he said he didn’t like pets, and I thought it wasn’t going to work.” So after eight years of being together, Stephens decided it was time to break the news — she was going to get a dog. She searched rescue shelters for five months looking for the perfect pup. Stephens wanted a Great Dane, but she knew she needed to convince her husband, Michael Stephens (pictured with Smalls on page 19), who had never owned a pet. In October 2012 the publicist was on her way to introduce herself to a TV network at the annual Fiesta Latinoamericana when she got sidetracked by a White Rock Dog Rescue setup. There she found Smalls, who changed her husband’s mind about pets. “It’s amazing how my husband has fallen in love with him,” Stephens says. “We can’t go to the grocery store without him buying a new bag of treats for him, even though we already have two big bags at home.”

Winging it

My adventures in grandparenting

As I write this month’s reflection, I’m winging across the country to visit my two daughters and four grandsons in Pennsylvania.

It’s a different experience, grandsons. Raising two girls was an experience full of joy and “emotional complexity.” Now our next generation of all boys is emotionally pretty simple and straightforward, but life is now characterized by what I might call “physical exuberance.”

I don’t mean to stereotype — I’m just tell you what our life has been like.

If you are one of our younger readers, it may seem that being a grandparent is several lifetimes away, but it’s not. As I get older, I am more conscious than ever of the swiftness with which time goes by. Yesterday I was a grandson scampering around Grandma Butcher. Today I’m a grandpa four times over. Tempus fugit.

I’m one of 65 million grandparents in the United States today, and that figure is expected to grow to 80 million by 2020. By that time, one in every three people in the United States will be a grandparent. Research shows that while many find grandparenting a highly satisfying time in life, an increasing number of grandparents face the added financial and emotional burden of being the primary caregiver of their grandchildren because of parents’ financial stress or other social problems. They need all the support we can give them.

In our increasingly mobile society, 75 percent of grandparents say they wish they could see their grandchildren more often, and only 33 percent live within 25 miles of their grandkids. When asked, “What is the most satisfying thing about being a grandparent?” 45 percent answer, “unconditional love,” and not being responsible for the discipline of the children.

Of course, becoming a grandparent can be a mixed bag. While we might have had

some control over the timing of our children, the arrival of grandchildren is out of our control. And when we first gain this new status, we may have to deal with the reality of our own aging.

In fact, I read recently that folks in my generation — the Baby Boomers — are seriously concerned about being called names that sound old. Grand-Dad or Grammy? Perish the thought. We’d prefer all kinds of outlandish but younger-sounding names, inventing a new generation of handles.

Of course it never works, because the

truth is that we don’t name ourselves — our grandchildren do. And don’t be surprised if the name they choose makes you sound old. After all, to them you are already ancient!

So I feel a strange calm, up here at 33,000 feet, knowing that soon this peace will be replaced with the physical exuberance of my grandsons. Do these visits make me feel older? Probably. But that’s OK. I don’t fight it.

As the plane banks to the northeast, I’ll simply utter a few lines from a 17th century prayer: “Keep me reasonably sweet; I do not want to be a sour old person — some of them are so hard to live with and each one a crowning work of the devil. Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places and talents in unexpected people. And, give me, O Lord, the grace to tell them so. Amen.”

someone swiped the parallel bars.

For years, Debby Cresswell has had a set of parallel bars at her Windsor Park home. The kids and grandkids enjoyed playing on them. They may not have been the next Mary Lou Retton, but they had fun nonetheless, swinging and flipping around on them. The entire setup was a very large recreation-park-size piece of equipment. Unfortunately, the opportunity for some acrobatic action came to a halt recently.

“They took it from the side of the yard,” Cresswell says of the day someone stole the 12-foot-long parallel bars. “It weighed a ton. Go figure.”

Cresswell was amazed and frustrated that someone would steal something so big, and she found the crime unnecessary.

Lt. Richard Dwyer of the Dallas Police North Central Patrol Division says that even though the price of scrap metal, mainly cooper, has gone down since last year, metal theft remains a concern in the area.

“One of the main issues with metal theft is the identification of the property. Many items cannot be marked for various reasons; therefore, it makes it hard for detectives to identify the property as stolen,” he says. “What owners can do is take photos of the property, especially if it is unique in size or style. Also, photos of any manufacturing or foundry markings that can help detectives trace the property are helpful. “
