BBQ EXCHANGES AT AREA BUSINESSES. CALL FOR LOCATIONS
Publisher’s Welcome Welcome to Southwest Harbor and Tremont — the “quiet side”! You have chosen to visit one of the most naturally beautiful places in the country — Mount Desert Island. This PORT DIRECTORY is intended to enhance the time you spend in this area by providing easy access to information about places to stay, things to do and see, activities, and places to dine, among other things. In the back of the book, you will find an extensive index of merchants. Also useful are the marina rules, rates and telephone numbers, tide charts, ferry schedules, museum listings, church services, maps of Southwest Harbor (including Bass Harbor and Tremont), and a full map of Mount Desert Island in the center section. It is our hope that the Port Directory will serve as a helpful reference book for the visitors and residents alike. We want this publication to be useful, fresh, fun, and appealing. Keep it aboard your boat, in your home, by your phone, or in your car. For additional copies, please ask at a place of business, Chamber of Commerce office, or just contact us. As we are a member of the Maine Tourism Association, our books can also be found at most visitor centers throughout Maine. Our sincere wish is that you enjoy your time on Mount Desert Island, and thank you for reading the Southwest Harbor & Tremont Port Directory. Please let those advertisers you visit know that you learned about them in the Port Directory! On a personal note, there are so many people who have guided me into this business in one way or another. I have to thank Frank Matter, who hired me over 30 years ago to work at Acadia Publishing Company, working on Acadia Weekly along with other publications. The knowledge I gained about the dynamics of publications on Mount Desert Island and learning that I actually DID have a creative bone in my body have helped make me the person I am today. I am so thankful to both Bruce Kosmusin and Wes Shaw, who have both passed. Bruce designed a new map for the Cranberry Isles; and Wes not only owned the Port Directories for years, but also the MDI Business Location Maps, which he sold to me five years ago. I am deeply indebted to each of these people.

LocaL Hands ReacHing out This is the thirteenth year that the Port Directories have put a spotlight on a local organization that “reaches out” - be it reaching around the world or around the corner. Last year we focused on an organization that works with our local children - this year to the opposite end (for the most part) of the age spectrum! All photos in this article are used by permission of Island Connections. Island Connections began in 1997 as the result of an informal needs assessment performed by The Mount Desert Island Senior Task Force which consisted of multiple agencies and organizations interested in addressing the unmet needs of the underserved and senior populations. A $25,000 Faith in Action seed grant was awarded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to establish the Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers project for seniors and people with disabilities (be it temporary or permanent), on Mount Desert Island. Volunteers were recruited from area faith congregations to provide basic needs such as transportation, grocery shopping and other services.

We are coming up on 22 years of service in the community and transportation remains our top priority. The people we serve we consider our neighbors. We offer free transportation service to those needing transportation to scheduled medical appointments including: chemotherapy, radiation treatments, dialysis treatments, out-patient surgery, mental and physical therapy, dental, and eye appointments, as well as rides for grocery shopping, banking visits, exercise classes and A volunteer’s van with bins desigother various trips. Our transportation service area nated to each of the neighbors she takes on a grocery shopping trip. includes all of MDI, Ellsworth, and as far as Blue Hill, Brewer and Bangor. Additionally, we work with the Mount Desert Island/Ellsworth Housing Authority to deliver meals to island neighbors in need. Island Connections is considered to be the “wheels” for the Meals on Wheels program on Mount Desert Island. Island Connections also owns and operates a wheelchair accessible van for those neighbors with mobility issues. All rides are provided with door to door service by our volunteers using their own resources such as vehicle, fuel and Google Stock Photo - Delivery of Meals time. While we can have as many as 100 on Wheels. registered volunteers, we typically have between 50-75 active drivers at any given time. Between transport of our neighbors to their needed appointments and meal deliveries, we provide between 250 to more than 400 rides per month. In 2017, our yearly ride total was 3,654 rides, including meal deliveries of up to 13,000 meals. In 2018, we saw a substantial increase in the number of neighbors we support and the ride total rose to 4,628 including meal deliveries above 14,000 meals. This significant increase resulted in a 28.5% increase in services delivered in one year. We expect that increase to be the “norm” going forward. As we look to the future, we are very excited about recently acquiring a sevenpassenger van through the generous donation from the Cough Family which will be used for a new program to transport several neighbors at a time to the grocery store on a weekly basis. We are working through other program ideas for the van

that will include weekly drives to Walmart and various local social events to include Open Table MDI, a weekly community meal in Bar Harbor; in the winter months from November to April to the MDI Coffee House, a collaboration between Island Connections and the YWCA MDI; and the Senior Movie Matinee at Reel Pizza in Bar Harbor which has been a long time collaboration for Island Connections providing a weekly discounted movie to older adults. We are very excited to see where this takes us and our neighbors! While we recognize the speed at which older people are requiring more services, it is always critical for us to maintain and recruit volunteers who are passionate about our mission. In 2018, a new recruitment program was developed, fittingly named Joy Riding with Island Connections. The joy is found during a ride when connections are made between our volunteers and neighbors. Many bonds and friendships are fostered, producing meaningful lasting connections. This program has proven to be a successful tool for recruitment purposes and it allows us to collabA volunteer assisting a neighbor orate with local libraries and churches to utilize into the car for an appointment. their spaces for such an event. Many of the neighbors we serve are living independently in their own homes without family or friends living nearby. You can certainly say that the rides are a means to give the neighbor the opportunity to not only get transportation to their appointments but to allow precious time for engagement with another member of their community. This is a vital consequence of our transportation service that can help alleviate isolation.

Our Annual Popover Event (held in May) at the Jordan Pond House, is hosted by our friends at Dawnland. This event has been running for many years. We invite about 100 neighbors from MDI and the 1.75 surrounding islands as well as volunteers to have those delectable delights (the famous popovers) along with tea in beautiful Acadia National Park. The morning seating consists mainly of our neighbors who look forward to this event all year long and the afternoon seating is for our

Our other annual events include our Chowder Chowdown for Rides, Driving for Rides Golf Tournament, Dine-Around Day, Running for Rides Mary Parker Memorial 5K Race and Holiday Raffle. All proceeds are used for the sole purpose of facilitating the services that our dedicated volunteers provide. Our goal is to provide this service for generations to come. If you would like to learn more about Island Connections to volunteer or donate, please call us at (207) 288-4457 or visit our website at www.islconnections.org and/or visit us on Facebook. Our Mission: Island Connections provides free transportation and other services to seniors and people with disabilities from Mount Desert Island and the surrounding islands to enhance their independence and quality of life by utilizing our core group of dedicated volunteers.

Youth Acadia Youth Conservation Corps (AYCC)- This is a full-time, eight week, non-residential trail maintenance program for High School Students ages 15-18. The program runs late June to mid-August, pays minimum wage, and awards participants who complete the eight weeks an education award. Join a team of your peers, learn valueable skills for the future, and help restore and maintain Acadia National Park’s beloved trails and carriage roads. This program is offered in partnership with Friends of Acadia. It may be too late for 2019, but check it out for 2020! Artist-In-Residence The Artist-in-Residence program is dedicated to creating new ways for visitors to experience Acadia through the arts. In exchange for a two-week residency, artists lead one outreach presentation for the public, and donate within one year one work of art that depicts a fresh and innovative new perspective of the park for visitors that’s drawn from their own experience. Selected artists travel to and take part in the program at their own expense at the invitation of the park superintendent. An online application process is open to all, but is highly selective based upon prior professional achievement and broader program goals to foster innovation, diversity, and relevance with new audiences. Three categories of applicants are considered: Visual Artists; Writers; and At-Large Participants working in such forms as music composition, performing arts, indigenous arts, and emerging technologies. Applications are reviewed by appointed juries including park staff, community members, past program participants, and subject matter experts. This final recipe was hand-written by Ella M. Benson in 1882 in her personal recipe book. This comes to us from the Tremont Historical Society.
Salt Fish Put a layer of fresh skinned codfish shred fine in a pudding dish. Then a layer of pounded crackers, bits of butter, a little pepper, then another layer of fish and crackers till the dish is nearly full. Beat 1 or 2 eggs. Add milk and pour over the fish until well covered. Bake for 1⁄2 to 3/4 hours. Good i.dea to have a dish of sliced lemons for any kind of fish and especially for those boiled or fried. Nice way to use cold pack fish: Remove the fish from skin and bone. Break it up small. To one pound of fish put 1⁄2 lb bread crumbs, 2 tablespoons of cream and 2 eggs well beaten. Mix all together with a seasoning of pepper and cayenne. Butter a dish. Press the mixture down to it. Score the top with a fork. Bake half an hour in a quick oven. The top should be nicely browned.

the Port directory featured hike To the summit of Beech Mountain. Then descending on the south ridge and returning on theValley Trail. Beginning and ending at the Beech Mountain Parking Area, GPS coordinates, N44,18,54.626,W68,20,36.941. Distance 2.3 miles All photos used in this article are used by permission of Bayside Graphics. This is our 12th season of presenting an outdoor activity in the Southwest Harbor & Tremont Port Directory. In the past we have featured hikes, bike rides, canoe and kayak trips. This year we offer a hike that includes a mountain summit with a fire tower and extensive views. The hike begins and ends at the Beech Mountain Parking Area. From the traffic light in Somesville, travel south on Route 102 .8 miles and turn onto the Long Pond Road, (blinking yellow light). Alternatively, if coming from Southwest Harbor, from Seal Cove Road, travel north on 102 4.9 miles and turn onto the Long Pond Road. In .3 miles turn left on the Beech Hill Road and go 3 miles to the Parking Area. Shortly before getting to the Parking Area, you will enter Acadia National Park. The trail begins on the north end of the parking area to the left of the bathrooms. The trail descends gently and then splits into two different routes up the mountain. Bear right following “Beech Mountain .7 miles”. This is a longer more gradual route up the mountain. As you ascend gently, you will swing around to the west slope of Beech Mountain. As the trail levels out, you will begin to see the water Long 2014 red 4/24/14 7:36 PM SW of Cycle Pond through the trees.

While all seasons are beautiful here in Maine, we did this hike during a favorite time of year - autumn! The colors were glorious, the air a little crisp, and the sky nice and clear. The trail re-enters the woods and climbs gently and then more moderately over rocks. You are generally going in a southerly direction with Long Pond peeking through the trees here and there. Then the trail turns left and moderately climbs the slope with some zig zag turns. After climbing for a short distance, the trail emerges out on to open ledges with very nice views to the west. At the intersection where the West Ridge Trail turns right and descends to the shore of Long Pond, you will stay left and continue to climb to the summit over steps. As you approach the summit, the Beech Mountain fire tower looms high above. The tower is closed, but you can climb up to the first landing. The views are excellent. The fire tower is on the National Registry of Historic Fire Towers. The first fire tower on Beech Mountain was constructed of wood and was removed in the mid 1950’s after being in service for about 15 years. The current steel tower was flown up and erected in 1962. Up until 1976, the tower was manned only during high fire danger times.

The views starting from the northeast take in the outer islands and the Atlantic Ocean. To the right are Mansell and Bernard Mountains and Long Pond. Further to the right you see the head of Mount Desert Island, Ellsworth and beyond. The view to the North is obscured but then Acadia, Norumbega and Sargent Mountains are lined up in a row. Finally, the view is completed with Northeast and Southwest Harbors, at the mouth of Somes Sound. When it’s time to move on, you will proceed south from the summit on the South Ridge Trail. This is a nice, open walk over smooth ledges for a while. The views to the south, east and west continue to be nice. The trail is marked in places on the ledges by blue paint blazes. There are places where you will need handholds as you clamber down the smooth ledges. You’ll notice as you descend that some of the rocks have very well defined parallel grooves cut into the surface - probably caused by glaciers eons ago. About a half mile from the fire tower, the trail turns sharply to the left and descends into the woods and zig zags down the steep slope. There are many stone steps in this section. As you reach the bottom of the hill, you will bear left on the Valley Trail. The valley trail is a nice walk over pretty level terrain. Traveling generally north, the cliffs of Beech Mountain are impressive on your left. Photos just can’t capture the splendor you see with the naked eye! After you have been on the Valley Trail for .6 miles, you will bear left as the Canada Cliffs Trail leaves to the right. Another .2 miles and you return to the parking area. We hope you enjoy your hike of Beech Mountain and the surrounding area. If you would like to share your trip with us, or make suggestions, please write to Bayside Graphics, PO Box 55, Mount Desert, ME 04660 or email us at info@visitsouthwestharbor.com

a climate to thrive by Jill Higgins
If the natural beauty of Mt Desert Island (MDI) inspires you to want to preserve it, you’re not alone. Most of the people who live here year-round are here because of their love of nature, and this community is becoming a model of sustainability in the face of climate change and plastic pollution. Last year, four eighth grade girls in Southwest Harbor, Ella Izenour, Caroline Musson, Charlotte Partin, and Logan Wilbur, did a school research project about plastic in the ocean that shocked and frightened them. They initially felt depressed and powerless about it, but when they asked their teacher if there was anything they could do to get plastic bags and polystyrene foam (aka styrofoam) banned in their town, she explained the local ordinance process to them, and they became determined to make it happen. They did a presentation for the Board of Selectmen that was so compelling that they were asked to help write the ordinances and do the presentation for all four MDI towns. A local grassroots organization, A Climate © Bonnie Norwood The four girls giving their presen- to Thrive (ACTT), whose Zero Waste Group had been educating the public on the growing plastics problem, tation at the Town Meeting. helped form a group of concerned citizens, including doctors and scientists, to join forces with the girls. And last November, Southwest Harbor voted overwhelmingly to ban single-use carryout plastic bags and polystyrene foam food containers. Cont’d. on p. 42

The girls were invited to present to the three other towns on MDI, and in January, Bar Harbor passed the same ordinances. Northeast Harbor and Tremont are voting on them at their May town meetings, and the island is making a transition to reusable bags and compostable take-out containers. If you’re a visitor and don’t have reusable bags with you, you can buy them at most stores on the island, and paper bags will also be available, sometimes for a 5 cent charge. Last year, A Climate to Thrive also helped a group of concerned restaurant and cafe owners and caterers to create the Sustainable MDI Pledge to reduce plastic waste and increase sustainable practices. Fifty businesses took the pledge last summer and made significant changes, and this summer the pledge is expanding to hotels, inns and bed and breakfasts. You can support this effort by bringing your own bags, water bottles, and mugs; asking cafes to refill your water bottles; sorting waste correctly so businesses can recycle and compost; and asking to not be given plastic utensils, straws, packaged condiments or bags if you don’t need them. Sustainable MDI decals can be seen on the doors and windows of pledging businesses. More information can be found at www.aclimatetothrive.org. A Climate to Thrive’s mission is to make MDI energy independent by 2030 and to be an inspiring model of sustainability in the face of climate change. MDI is already seeing the effects of climate change with sea level rise, lobster fisheries moving north, and increases in forest pests and invasive plants in the national park, and islanders are taking charge with local action to reduce energy waste and transition to clean renewable energy. “Climate change is such a big issue; it’s easy for people to feel daunted or overwhelmed. The whole notion of A Climate to Thrive turns that on its head, focusing on effecting change locally, in towns, businesses, schools and homes. ” says ACTT founder Gary Friedmann. Seventy-six homes and businesses responded to ACTT’s Solarize MDI campaign - the most successful one of its kind in the state - to double the island’s solar capacity. This included a Community Solar Farm on a Southwest Harbor boat storage building with the capacity to power 12 homes. Tremont Selectman Kevin Buck worked with members of the Tremont Solar Task Force last winter on a project to build the first solar array on a capped landfill in

© Joe Joe Blotnick Blotnick northern Maine. “We’re going to © have the largest array on the island, for awhile anyway,” said Buck, smiling as his young granddaughters performed the ribbon-cutting. “I’m doing this for them.” The solar array is expected to save $400,000 MDI solar capacity has tripled since 2017 in electricity costs for the local school and town buildings over the next 25 years. Almost as important for the town’s 1,590 residents is that it looks like Tremont may now have the most solar per capita in Maine. Ideas spread quickly around the island, and the Mount Desert Island High School in Bar Harbor is now making a student’s senior project a reality by installing 1,300 solar panels on the roof this summer. Besides making a big dent in carbon emissions, these projects are saving the towns and schools a lot of money to spend on other things, and they’ll hopefully inspire similar projects all over the country and beyond.

maine-made Wines This article was written by Dawn Lamendola, owner of HouseWine in Bar Harbor. Dawn attended College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor with a focus on sustainable agriculture and ended up at the University of Iowa studying Political Science. Most of her years after college were spent in the wine industry working as a sommelier in NewYork and Boston as well as at the Windows on theWorld Wine School in NYC. In 2009 Dawn returned to Bar Harbor to open HouseWine. Dawn lives in Bar Harbor with her husband Josh who teaches photography at COA, son Griffin an imaginative third grader at Conners Emerson School, and their crazy silver lab. While Maine may not seem like the most likely region for wine production with our cold winters and short growing season, there are some 25+ wineries making wine in the state. Maine wines have been made from honey, European Vitis vinifera grapes, American Vitis labrusca grapes, cold resistant hybrid grapes and myriad other fruits and combinations of all of the above. Apples, pears, blueberries, cranberries, strawberries, peaches, blackberries, elderflower and rhubarb have all been turned into Maine wine. In addition, some wineries bring in grapes or pressed juice from other wine producing regions and make the wines in their own Maine wineries. Maine wines suffer from the common misconception that wines made from fruit other than grapes must all be quite sweet. However, these fruit wines can be anywhere from very dry to dessert wine sweet, semi-dry, sparkling and everything in between. I have tasted blueberry

At House Wine shop in Bar Harbor, we field the most questions about blueberry wines. It is said that it takes about 5 gallons of wild Maine blueberries to make a single bottle of wine. Wild Maine blueberries are low bush blueberries that grow throughout the state and most prolifically in the Downeast region – with Cherryfield, Maine recognized as the Wild Blueberry Capital of the World. Due to the amount of skin to juice ratio, these tiny berries are capable of producing dark wines with deep tannic structure. When fermentation is stopped early on, a sweeter wine is produced. Maine growers know that the key to quality wine making is experimenting to find which grapes (if any) do best in their area. In some parts of the state, wineries are experimenting with growing some European varietals (Vitis vinivera), finding the interior region better for ripening these grapes than the foggy coastal areas. However, the Maine soil and climate are not very conducive to growing and fully ripening these kinds of grapes. Many wineries are having success growing and producing wines from cold weather hardy hybrid grape varietals such as Marquette, Frontenac, La Crosse and Leon Mallot. In 2019, we will tell a story in our museum about bird carving that explores the lives and work of these two extremely talented carvers. Museum member, and carver, Paul Haertel will curate this exhibition with the help of museum carver Steven Valleau. This exhibition is possible thanks to the generosity of Tom Haertel - Harold’s son, and a carver himself. June 28 - Oct. 16: Summer Exhibition Opening Beginning of Treasure of the Farnsworth Show. The Gilley and the Farnsworth join forces in order to bring you a unique collection of Maine Masterworks, especially curated for the Gilley, including a range of important painters such as Fitz Henry Lane, George Bellows, Marsden Hartley, Neil Welliver, Emily Muir, Jaime Wyeth, and many more. The exhibition will also feature outstanding modern bird scupltures by Maine artists Edwin Gamble and Bernard Langlais and by Louise Nevelson. July 13: Flamingo Festival Parade: The Gilley will be marching, with flamingos flapping, in the parade. Come join us! Contact the museum for more info or to register at info@wendellgilleymuseum.org. August 1: Flight of Swallows: Exclusive wine tasting to benefit the Wendell Gilley Museum will be held at the Neighborhood House in Northeast Harbor. By advance reservation only. Call (207) 244-7555. August 21: Celebration of Wendell Gilley’s 115th Birthday: Free admission all day, special activities ... and cake! 10am-4:30pm. September 12: Cinq a Sept Party: Maine Magazine Networking Event. An evening of wonderful food, drinks and conversation. 5-7pm. Free admission.
