The city’s vibrant arts and cultural industry continues to evolve.
As mayor, I recall when a decade ago a Melbourne art critic commented that the Gold Coast “was a cultural desert”. Those words stung as I knew they were both untrue and out of touch with reality.
We have a deep and vibrant arts community on the coast.
The 2023 edition of the Bleach Festival showcased our incredible Gold Coast-based creatives. In fact, more than 170 local artists featured on the program including two world premiere performances.
Our HOTA precinct is growing in stature with the Pop Masters exhibition achieving huge interest - and attendances - in the main gallery.
From a council perspective, we continue to see the Level Up arts program expand as we support young emerging visual artists across the coast.
Art is an industry and I view it as a key economic driver for the coast. Major exhibitions like Pop Masters draw intrastate and interstate visitors who stay longer and spend more - good news for local businesses.

Apart from its role in promoting our city locally, nationally and internationally, the arts sector also reinforces the broader social fabric of our community.
I have always held the view that a “city without art is a city without soul”. Through HOTA, Level Up, the Broadbeach Cultural Precinct, the Gold Coast Eisteddfod and so many other wonderful festivals, we have a fantastic story to tell.
My message to the Melbourne art critic and his friends is: “if you think we are a desert, it has rained and today, our desert is blooming”.

Cosmetic Injectables
Cosmetic injections, also known as dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle treatments are used to smooth lines and wrinkles as well as add volume to lips and cheeks.

Gold Coast Marine Industry is Surging
Boating has been going crazy on the Gold Coast in the past two years. Since the pandemic began, Australians have shown an unprecedented demand to get out on the water. People who couldn’t travel overseas (or take international cruises) turned to our own waters instead.
There’s been a huge boom in new and used boat sales in the region – with local boat builders recording record growth in demand. Boat builders are forecasting at least a 25 percent annual growth across the next two years – and the region is home
to many of Australia’s most important shipyards and marina facilities. Every marina on the Gold Coast is close to full, while the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show had its best year this year with over 44 000 visitors, up 20 percent on last year’s numbers. It’s Australia’s biggest celebration of the boating lifestyle – held across four days in May. It’s the most glamorous boating lifestyle event in the Southern Hemisphere and visitors clearly couldn’t get enough of it.
There’s also been a huge growth in people buying personal watercraft such as jet skis on the Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast Builds Australia’s Largest Megayacht Berths
The Southport Yacht Club has built Australia’s largest floating megayacht berth – a key part of a strategy to position Queensland as the superyacht hub for the Asia-Pacific region.
In February the Southport Yacht Club opened 11 floating pontoons which span 160 metres to accommodate megayachts up to a length of a whopping 130 metres.
The difference between a superyacht and a megayacht is size – a superyacht starts at 24 metres in length, whereas a megayacht is anything over 80 metres long (all megayachts are superyachts).
The Southport Yacht Club was already seen by many as Australia’s most progressive yacht clubs in recent times, and now it’s taken another step into the sailing future.
The 11 huge concrete pontoons will bring in millions of dollars into the region and feature the most high-tech boating and engineering technology available on Earth.
The project was a collaboration between the yacht club, the City Of Gold Coast and the Queensland Government to attract the megayacht market. The Gold Coast is perfectly positioned between the super and megayacht sailing playgrounds of Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef and is fast becoming one of the industry’s major hubs.

What is the fixed-rate cliff and how can refinancing help?
You’ve probably heard the term “fixed-rate cliff” bandied about in finance news feeds. But what is it? And if you’re about to head over it, how can you prepare for a soft landing?
Astaggering 880,000 fixed-rate loans are set to end this year, and when they do, many Australian households will be facing significantly higher mortgage repayments.
That’s because the variable interest rates now on offer are much higher than the fixed rates locked in years ago.
So today we look at what this so-called “cliff” might mean for your budget and how you can reduce the impact by refinancing.
But first, why is the fixed rate cliff looming in 2023?
Before 2020, fixed-rate mortgages equated to about 20% of total Australian home loans.
But during the pandemic, the RBA dramatically slashed the cash rate to a record low of 0.10%, and many savvy Australians pounced on the opportunity to lock in a low interest rate in early to mid-2021 for two to three years.
This saw 2021 fixed-rate borrowing basically double to 40% of total Australian home loans.
However, as with all good things, the low rate times came to an end.
Since May 2022, the RBA has hiked the official cash rate back up to 3.60%.
Those on fixed-rate loans have had a reprieve, until now – with 880,000 mortgage holders set to start rolling off their fixed rate throughout 2023.
And CoreLogic warns “the pain will be felt most acutely from April” this year.
What effects can a fixed rate cliff have
According to CoreLogic data, a mortgage holder who took out an average-sized loan of $538,936 with a fixed rate of 1.98% could see their repayments increase by over $1000 per month when rolling over to a standard variable rate.
Those who locked in 2020/2021 interest rates that hovered around the 1.75 to 2.25% range will be transitioning to interest rates as high as 5 to 6%.
That’s an increase greater than the 3 percentage point minimum interest rate buffer that lenders use to assess the serviceability of home loan applications.
How to refinance (properly)
When a fixed-rate loan period ends, lenders often don’t roll existing clients over to the best rates they have on offer.
The most attractive interest rates are usually reserved for new customers as an incentive.
But by refinancing with another lender you can access lower introductory rates, which can potentially save you thousands of dollars in repayments over time.

LOWER BEECHMONT CONSERVATION AREA
A rugged area with various trails with steep hills and challenging terrain, the Lower Beechmont Conservation Area covers 775 hectares and is one of the largest conservation areas managed by the City. Frequented by horse riders, mountain bikers and bushwalkers, you’ll have to be self-reliant in this natural environment, and with trail names such as Hellfire Pass, you know it’ll be difficult.
THREE HILLS – NERANG NATIONAL PARK
Three Hills is a fun 2.7km long trail that you can start at the trailhead or at NG26 for a more downhill run. Either way, be prepared to climb more in the beginning, and to be ready to enjoy a long descent. If you start at NG26, the trail takes you southeast, back down the mountain, through tallowwood and grey gum. Be prepared to roll over or around some big stones and roots in the track, and also take on navigate over or around obstacles. Red wallabies may make an appearance, and there are some good views out to the city skyline.
THE GOLD COAST HINTERLAND GREAT WALK –SPRINGBROOK TO LAMINGTON NATIONAL PARK
This 54km walk takes you through ancient rainforests and along the shield of an historical volcano and features steep slopes and unformed creek crossings; it usually takes about three days to complete. It’s popular with keen bushwalkers, trail runners and marathoners. Most people walk from west to east and start at Lamington National Park in Green Mountains section (near O’Reillys), and finish at Springbrook National Park.

HINZE DAM – ADVANCETOWN
These trails are a hit with runners and cyclists wanting a picturesque way to get their exercise fix but there’s also more difficult walks. Popular with horse-riders, mountain bikers and runners, you can weave your way through some of the fire trails and a dedicated MTB single track through catchment land around the lake. There’s also links to the trail network within the adjoining Springbrook National Park. A café and amenities are on site.
WARRIE CIRCUIT – SPRINGBROOK
This 17km challenging loop track takes you from Springbrook Plateau down through the valley and back, crossing creeks, walking through waterfalls and among some giant historic rainforest. The waterfalls are particularly stunning after rain; bring good shoes and a sense of adventure.
THE BORDER TRACK – TUGUN TO CURRUMBIN VALLEY
Just a few minutes from Tweed Heads, this 22km return track is popular with mountain bikers. It’s a great way to knock out some kilometres but be prepared to grind up a few hills; you’ll have stunning views across the Gold Coast. This track is also busy with trail runners looking to push themselves. Just follow the border fence that divides QLD and NSW from Tugun to Bains Road Currumbin Valley.
NERANG NATIONAL PARK
Home of the mountain bike race during the 2018 Commonwealth Games, this park has steep stony trails
that are also suitable for strong walkers, but walkers be sure to avoid the dedicated MTB tracks. The bike trails range from easy to expert and scenery is dry rainforest and open eucalypt forests. Horse riding is allowed on a designated track. In rainy weather the steep trails are super slippery.
POLLY’S CLIMB AND PAGES PINNACLE –NERANWOOD
What goes up, must come down! Polly’s Climb is a steep quest to the summit with an exhilarating descent. Push yourself to the limit with added trails to Pages Pinnacle – an impressive 400m volcanic plug sitting proudly between Springbrook and the Numinbah Valley. This one is not for the faint hearted but the views are well worth it.
Bushwalking tips for adrenaline junkies
• Don’t forget your phone or GPS, not just so you can track your awesome trek but also for safety reasons.
• Be prepared for the worst and carry spare tubes or puncture kit in car or on you, also basic first aid gear.
• Tell someone your plans in case you have a bad stack or lose your way.
• Always carry plenty of water to stay hydrated and be sun smart.
• Stick to the trails, take rubbish with you and check the weather forecast for warnings.
