hen Leslie Dolby started DART Boutique in Tea, South Dakota, three years ago, she never could have imagined the journey it would take her on over the next three years. It’s not unusual to experience a few bumps in the road when opening a new business, but Dolby certainly didn’t see a global pandemic coming. Still, the clothing and gift store persevered and even grew to the point where she began thinking about

an expansion into Sioux Falls. She found a location at The Bridges at 57th and immediately went to work creating the vision and the vibe for the new store. While preparing the new space last year, she faced another one of those bumps in the road with unexpected staffing shortages. So, as she had done before, she pivoted and decided to close the Tea store and focus on the Sioux Falls location. Dolby said she would never be in the position she’s

in now, were it not for the support of the Tea community. Being in such a friendly community gave her business and her confidence the necessary boost to take the next step in her business journey. “Where Fun Meets Chic” is the motto at DART Boutique, and Dolby has taken great care to create an environment where everyone feels welcome. In fact, the front door reads, “ALL sizes for ALL women.” Dolby calls the aesthetic at DART

a combination of vintage, artsy, quirky, fun and cool – whether in the clothing available for sizes small to 3X or in the unique gift items that feature everything from Betty White to the characters from Schitt’s Creek. Favorites at the store – which are also available for purchase in the online shop – include Judy Blue denim in sizes 0-24W, graphic tees and cardigans. The store also carries unique jewelry, shoes

and other accessories. Dolby’s attention to detail with all of the clothing at the store comes from her own “nontraditional” body size, as she describes it. Knowing the challenges she had in the past finding clothing that was both stylish, and had a great fit for her body type, served as the initial inspiration for DART. Rather than being defined by the “P” in plus-sized, she says there are many other P’s that define her, including passionate, positive,

purposeful, performer (she’s a musician) and a people-person. Not taking herself too seriously, she also throws in a self-admission as a procrastinator and the fact that she’s peculiar…because “it keeps life interesting.” In all that she does – and through what she has created at DART Boutique – Dolby’s main goal is to inspire others the way she has been inspired to not be defined by a size and to have fun creating your own style.

Some things are just meant to be.

t took some time and a couple of jogs in the road, but for one Sioux Falls couple, a wish became reality when they moved into their dream house in the fall of 2021. Flashback about a decade when the couple was growing out of the house they shared with three young children and a fourth on the way. They had always loved the Tuthill area with the mature trees, proximity to parks and the character of the homes. There was one house in particular they had their eye on, so they sent a letter asking those homeowners if they were interested in selling, and if they were, to please let them know. Unfortunately, the timing wasn’t right, so the couple found a home on the east side of Sioux Falls for their growing family. To their surprise, less than two years later, the couple heard from “the homeowners” saying they were considering selling their Tuthill home. Having settled in where they were, the couple wasn’t yet ready to move, but they also weren’t going to let the house slip away. So, they bought it and decided to rent it out until they were ready to make another move. Knowing the 1980s era house was going to need some remodeling to fit both their needs and their style, the couple took their time – sitting down and each making a wish list of features they wanted if they were ever to renovate the house and move in. Five years later, they decided it was time. Renovations started during the summer of 2020. “It was right after COVID hit,” they said. “At first that really didn’t have too much impact on the renovations, but then we did have to wait for some things to come in. Well, and we also added to the

project, so that made it take a little longer.” Comparing the “before” pictures to the finished product, it’s hard to believe it’s the same house. “Anything you see in the house now basically isn’t the same as when we first looked at it,” they explained. “The trends back when the house was built was honey oak everything and lots of pastels. Even the bathroom had pink fixtures. Every room needed something.” They took out a tall brick corner fireplace in the living room, bumped out the kitchen, and even moved the staircase that leads up to the second floor. Once they took out what they knew they didn’t want, they were able to map out where they wanted to go. The couple credits both their contractor and the designers from Houndstooth House for helping check off their wish lists one item at a time. The outdoor space really excited the couple, for example, so when they took out the brick corner fireplace in the living room and opened up the floor plan on the main level, they added more windows, as well as

sliders to the back patio. Taking out the old oak woodwork and changing everything to white also lightened up the entire house. There were some features they liked, however, such as the wood treatment on the sloped ceiling that was accented by large beams. They braved the heights and got up there to paint the wood white and stain the beams themselves. The kitchen was a primary focus of the project because, as they said, “That’s where everyone seems to congregate.” To get the open look and feel that they wanted, they relied on the expertise and creativity of their team. There was a supporting beam right in the middle of the kitchen, but when they expressed wanting to have that gone, the team figured out a solution. Now, the kitchen has cabinets and counters along three walls with open space in the middle for two islands – one primarily to be a counter for seating and the other with a prep sink and plenty of storage. Although the couple said their contractor thought they were a little crazy to propose the two islands,

but when everything was done, everyone agreed that it works. The homeowners have a friend from Albert Lea who did all of the custom cabinetry work. When his shop closed during COVID, he was looking for something to do, so their remodeling project came at a perfect time. “He’s highly skilled and a perfectionist, so we couldn’t have asked for anything better,” they said. While the couple stayed with oak cabinets, they used a dark stain on the quarter sawn wood for the lower cabinets and islands. The lighter wood floating shelves and cabinets on the third wall provide a pretty contrast. The walk-in pantry and mud room behind the main kitchen space were on their “must have” list of desired features, adding storage and functionality but with the ability to “just close the doors.” As they opened up the back of the house, they saw an opportunity to move the master bedroom to the front, locating it in a space that had previously been a

This space ended up being an unexpected surprise. “We knew we were going to enjoy the new kitchen and the outdoor space in the back,” they explained, “but moving the master suite to the front of the house was better than we imagined.” There is plenty of room for their furniture, including a sitting area, and their bedroom connects to a spacious master bath with a walk-in closet where they added a stacked washer and dryer. “It is amazing to be able to just relax in here, and in the morning, if we feel like it, we can even get up and do a load of laundry, all here in our own space.” The kids, ages 16, 14, 11 and 8 – each have their own rooms, along with a great “teen hang out space,” as they call the lower family room. The wet bar area downstairs has a full-sized refrigerator and dishwasher, and the room has plenty of seating to gather around for a movie on the flat screen TV hanging over the fireplace. One of the boys has a room downstairs, and the couple’s daughter and other two

sons have rooms on the second floor. As part of the remodeling project, they moved the main staircase, which gave them some extra space on the upper floor. So, they decided to move the main laundry upstairs, which is a great convenience for the kids. They also realized that having just one furnace in the basement wasn’t very efficient for heating the entire house. With one of their sons having an especially roomy closet, they utilized some of that space to install a second-floor furnace. It took many months, and even more decisions to complete the renovations inside the house, but the couple had also spent time thinking about the backyard. They are anxiously awaiting the end of winter when they can get back out and enjoy the concrete fire table they built, as well as the family-sized hot tub on the patio. They added a retaining wall in the back, and they can walk down the hill where there is a little pond and stock dam. The family gets a glimpse of the occasional fox or deer – and plenty of squirrels – that enjoy the heavily-wooded yard. “When the leaves are filled out in the summer, you can’t even see that we have neighbors,” they said. “And we love that we can get to the mountain bike trail right through our neighbor’s yard. Ten years ago, we weren’t sure we’d ever be here, but it’s the perfect house for our stage of life right now. It was our dream come true.”

Mix these ingredients for 2-3 minutes and pour into cupcake pans ( makes 22-24) and bake at 350˚ for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool for 30-45 minutes.

The Bridge at

Iverson Crossing BY WAYNE FANEBUST

he bridge at Iverson Crossing and the road leading up to it are both named in the honor of Ole B. Iverson, a Norwegian immigrant who came to Dakota Territory from Iowa in 1868. He came with his father Iver, his brother Peter and brotherin-law Andy, all of whom claimed a series of 160 acre chunks of land along the Big Sioux River, from where present-day Brandon is located, all the way south to the Iowa border. The Iverson’s domain also included what is now Gitchie Manitou State Preserve, a

beautiful, well-wooded parcel of prairie located in the extreme Northwest corner of Lyon County Iowa, with the Big Sioux River as its western boundary. The park became part of a homestead in 1868, when Ole B. Iverson purchased 148 acres at a cost of $1.25 per acre. Iverson described the land as “smooth prairie with a very gentle slope toward the river,” a tract of land that included ten acres of “red Sioux Falls sand stone.” This, of course, is a reference the pinkish quartzite stone, the huge outcroppings of which that adds

great beauty to the park. Iverson also noted that his land featured “the largest cottonwood tree I ever saw.” Iverson also pre-empted the adjacent quarter of land on the Dakota side of the border. Other members of his family also claimed homesteads along the Big Sioux River, in Dakota, because Ole’s father wanted each of his children to have a farm “in the same neighborhood.” The land that would eventually become Gitchie Manitou State Preserve was part of the “neighborhood.” A peculiar feature of that

The bridge was the third to be built at this location. It was built for use by horse drawn wagons and buggies and was of the Parker through-truss architectural style ca. 1907.

rocky Iowa corner was a “rectangular block of stone ten feet long and five feet high….” It stood parallel to, and about six feet from, a “vertical cliff eight feet high.” The structures were such that the Iverson’s put up two other walls and a crude roof “for a very substantial house.” It became the family headquarters. Unfortunately, they had swarms of mosquitoes for company, a common frontier pest. Eventually the Iverson’s built a large sod house on the property for father Iver. “This was the best house of the lot,” Ole recalled. About ten feet of it was situated in Iowa, the rest in Dakota. Many years later, when writing articles about his frontier experiences for The Daily Argus-Leader, Ole stated that his father’s bed “was placed so that his head and shoulders would sleep in Iowa and the other parts of him in Dakota.” As they were the first to settle in what became Split Rock Township, their nearest neighbors were soldiers stationed at Fort Dakota, near the falls of the Big Sioux River. Ole conducted a life-saving journey to Sioux City and back with supplies badly needed by the soldiers. Life was indeed, one of hardships and danger

and yet the Iversons thrived due to the presence of relatively clean water, rich soil, wild fruit and timber that grew along the river. In 1871, the settlers petitioned the Minnehaha County Commission to create a road through the Iverson property that forded the river at a place called “Iverson Crossing.” The area near the crossing was called “Gibraltar” no doubt because of the outcroppings of quartzite stone. From the early 1870s until 1878, when the first railroad arrived in Minnehaha County, Iverson Crossing road was the principle artery of transportation for freight, mail and passengers from parts north and east. Stagecoaches from Blue Earth, Minnesota and Sibley, Iowa, forded the river at the crossing, as did other conveyances. During times of high water, fording was treacherous and many a wagon found itself tipped over or forced to retreat, thus stranding unhappy travelers. Through it all, Iverson Crossing became a landmark and a point of reference. It was frequently mentioned Dakota Territory newspapers. In 1871, Ole B. Iverson was in the territorial legislature when that body sent a memorial to Congress asking that a bridge

be constructed “at or near Gibraltar, or near where the Sioux Falls and Blue Earth City road crosses the same.” The idea was pre-mature because the first bridge over the Big Sioux River, “at or near Gibraltar” was not built until 1889. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by the calamitous flood of 1895. Another bridge was built but it too, gave way to springtime high waters. The present bridge was constructed by S. W. Hewitt and Company in the Parker style, with arch walls and diagonal bracing. It features five connected structures meaning a main span camel back truss with a west approach of three four panel pony trusses and an east approach of one three panel pony truss. Although it has stood strong against many floods, the bridge was closed to the public in 1983. The sturdy old bridge is now private property. Some years ago, my late friend Aaron Munson and I got it added to the national registry of historic places. While it will never see a tractor, truck or car pass over it, the grand old bridge will likely remain in place as a reminder of the past and of the visionary character of men like my friend Aaron, and of course, Ole B. Iverson.

AN IRISH BLESSING BY LURA ROTI

e recently finished the basement of our 1888 home, and to commemorate the space, friends gave us a framed Irish Blessing. “May you always have walls for the winds, A roof for the rain, Tea beside the fire, Laughter to cheer you, Those you love near you, And all your hearts may desire.” Who could ask for more? I’m a sucker for quotes, blessings, verses – words written with a purpose – I love them. As a teen, I was given a small blank bound notebook and I began collecting quotes. The book fit neatly into the inside pocket of my corduroy FFA jacket, so during my high school years, I took it to every camp, contest and convention. I asked new friends and old to jot down their favorite quote. My favorite quote? I have a few. But the one I think about most, is one my college roommate gave me as a graduation gift. It is inscribed in a paper weight, and it sits on my desk, so it serves as a daily reminder.

KNICK KNACKS OF LIFE

“Good writing is clear thinking made visible.” I still have the quotebook. It’s fun to look through and read the quotes teens in the ‘90s deemed to be their favorite. I really should begin collecting quotes again. Today, many decades later, it would be interesting to read what we all deem to be our favorite quotes. And there would be many new names added to the book. I consider myself fortunate to remain connected with my closest friends from high school and college. And I consider myself quite fortunate to have made new, dear friends since. Anytime there’s a cold, bleak winter or spring day lacking sunshine and color, and I ask myself why I live in South Dakota. Friends is always my answer to myself. I am fortunate to have amazing friends. Friends of all ages, wages and backgrounds. There are many beautiful quotes about friendship. But the one I reflect on most often is one my mom reminded me and my brothers of often. “To have good friends, you must be a good friend.” I use the word “fortunate” and not the word “lucky” because I believe very little in life is left up to luck. I think most good things are the result of actions and behaviors. Not all. But most. I do not use the same logic when it comes to bad events and circumstances. In most cases, I believe we have little control over

the bad things that happen in life. I have witnessed too many good, honest, hardworking, giving people have horrific and unfair things happen to them to think otherwise. This is where good friends come in. Good friends are here for us in the good times and the bad. Early January our family caught COVID. Thankfully we were all vaccinated and boosted, so it was mild for all of us. But we had to quarantine for about two weeks. I went stir crazy. And I began to wonder, “How did we do this for so many months in 2020 and early 2021?”

Friends. Even on the coldest of weekends, we would have friends over to sit outside by our fireplace, bundled up in coats and snow pants. We’d visit for hours. As I reflect on the Irish Blessing our friends gave us that now hangs in our basement living room, perhaps the most applicable line is: “Those you love near you.” When those we love are near, we are indeed blessed.

THE TIPPING FACTOR BY RICCARDO TARABELSI

his month I’m going to depart my usual musings about wine since March has always been more of a beer month...drinking green beer on St. Patrick’s Day, previewing new seasonal beers for the summer, and indulging in beer with friends for March Madness basketball. This month I’d like to address a relevant topic since we are all affected by it; whether we depend on it for income or if we decide it for service. Tipping. Call it a gratuity, a service fee, or just a way to reward the person that is serving you; tips affect everybody. I remember working at my dad’s gas station as a kid. It was the perfect summer job. I would wait for someone to pull up to the pumps, run around to the driver’s window and ask with a smile, “Fill up?” Now, I’m probably dating myself by writing this, but this is when unleaded gas was about $0.89 a gallon, and we even offered leaded gasoline! Anyway, most people would have me fill up their tanks, hand me a $10 bill (for a fill up!) and then something magical happened… they would say, “This is for you,”

and hand me a quarter or a fifty-cent coin or even a whole dollar! They actually tipped me for a service that I provided. They didn’t have to get out of their car, or get their hands dirty, or even figure out how to open their gas tank door. I did that FOR them, and they rewarded me for it. Now, almost four decades later, I work in an industry where good service is rewarded, and exceptional service is the goal. In restaurants, tipping is more of a carrot-and-stick arrangement: “Serve us well and we’ll leave you a nice tip—maybe.” But it’s also a cart-before-the-horse arrangement. Far more practical in terms of getting results was the British habit of the mid-eighteenth century: patrons of pubs and coffee houses would hand waiters coins wrapped in a note reading “To Insure Promptitude.” Giving tips in anticipation of service, rather than after the fact, gave waiters the motivation to move it. Tipping reflects our desire for our servers to like us even though we’ll be leaving in five minutes and may never see them again.

Tipping Other Service Providers Bathroom attendant: $2 a visit. Bellhop: $2 a bag, plus $10 for showing you how to turn on the TV and air conditioning. Bus tour driver and guides: $5 per person, per day. Coatroom attendants: $2 per article of clothing. Concierge: $10 to $20 for getting tickets and a difficult restaurant reservation; more for special services. Hairdresser: 20 percent of the bill, plus $2 for the shampoo technician. Housekeeping: $2 to $5 a day, and more if you’re messy. Leave the tip in your room at the end of your stay (though some folks leave a daily tip to get their pillows fluffed regularly.) Valet parking: $5

Perhaps this is because we fear waiters’ anger if they’re stiffed. There used to be a website called The Waiter’s Revenge dedicated to servers posting fantasies in which punishments were given to bad tippers. Among the more interesting: bad tippers have to sit in a special saltines-only section of the restaurant, the bad tipper has a flat tire and the waiter is the only one with a spare, and bad tippers are given a complimentary after-dinner chocolate—the waiter explains that the word “Ex-Lax” printed on them means “Have a great day!” in Latin. So how much should you tip? Fifteen per cent used to be the standard for good service, but these days most diners consider 20% to 25% more appropriate—for good service. Let’s assume that the service was good. This means that the waiter was attentive, prompt, and knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. Your waiter was friendly, but didn’t hover like a fairy godmother. Keep in mind that the more capable the service, the more invisible it becomes.

Consider, as well, what you’re demanding from your server. How many courses and drinks did you order? Did you ask for substitutions or special dishes? Did the waiter, at your urging, consult with the chef about ingredients and preparation? Did the sommelier help you match each course with a glass of wine? Did you bring any children with you? The more you ask of the wait staff, the more you should reward them. In the end, great service deserves a great tip. Carpe Exceptional Service! 3 (and a half) Things That Will Make Your Meals Better BY JIM MATHIS

ne of the shows I find myself watching too often is Beat Bobby Flay. If you’re not familiar with it, the premise is pretty simple. The titular Iron Chef gives two chef-contestants 20 minutes to create a dish using an ingredient he chooses. The winner then challenges Bobby with their signature dish. Spoiler alert: Bobby wins more than he loses. If the contestant is a pastry chef or cooks something Bobby’s not familiar with, they have a chance. But most of the time Bobby prevails. What does he do that makes him win so often? Well, aside from the fact that he’s a great chef and thinks well on his feet, he tends to lean on a few simple tricks. And the more I’ve watched the show, the more I’ve learned from his winning techniques. I swear, these three things will make your food taste better whether you’re cooking fresh lobster and filet mignon or a box of Hamburger Helper. Give them a shot, and if you find yourself challenging Bobby Flay to a Hamburger Helper battle, all I ask is that you give me a little shout out when you win.

A Splash of Acid! One of the things the judges frequently praise in the winning dishes is balance. The chefs balance fat with acid, and heat with sweet. The acid can come in any number of forms, a simple squeeze of lemon juice, a few drops of vinegar, a few pickled vegetables or maybe some citrus zest. A couple of pickles on a hamburger help to cut through the fat and add balance to the flavor. What makes a bahn mi so good? Pickled vegetables. And a Cuban sandwich without mustard and pickles is just a boring pork sandwich. Classic fish and chips, about as fatty a dish as you can find, comes to life with a splash of malt vinegar. One of my favorite side dishes is collard greens, cooked for a long time with a generous amount of smoked pork in the pot. But the greens I cooked at home weren’t as good as I had in the south, until a southern cook shared his secret — two tablespoons of white vinegar added to the two quarts of water the greens are braising in. Boom. My greens now taste like they were cooked by someone’s grandmother from Alabama. As you’re working on your next meal, give it a taste and ask if a little acid could help. The answer is probably yes.

A Little Sauce! One thing missing from many dishes that home cooks make is a sauce. Or if there is a sauce, it comes out of a bottle that says

ketchup, A.1. or Hidden Valley Ranch. But go to a nice restaurant and your meal will likely include a sauce of some kind, and the better the restaurant, the better the sauce! Think about a plate of steamed broccoli. Not very exciting, is it? But drizzle on a little Hollandaise sauce and it goes from bland to fancy. Hollandaise has a reputation for being hard to make, but it is really just three ingredients: egg yolk, lemon juice, and melted butter. The lemon balances the butter, and the egg helps bind it together. With a steak at a nice restaurant, you’ll often be offered a variety of sauces: hunter, a house-made steak sauce or au poivre. Ah… that au poivre sounds fancy and time consuming to make, which makes it worthy of a hefty upcharge. But I’ll let you in on a little secret. It’s cream, brandy, and pepper (some recipes add shallots or Dijon) on a pepper crusted steak. You can do it at home. Your friends will be impressed, and if anyone’s watching you cook and they see the brandy flare up, they’ll be really blown away. One of my beloved’s favorites is pork chops with a simple pan sauce. When the chops come out of the pan, I add a small finely diced shallot, some minced garlic and sauté until softened, then add a couple tablespoons of sherry and an equal amount of grainy Dijon mustard. Stir it together and spoon over the pork chops. Easy and delicious.

A Little Texture! One trick Bobby Flay often has up his sleeve is adding texture to dishes that might otherwise be kind of, well, mushy. You’ll see this when he’s making rice dishes. He cools the rice down so it’s cooked correctly, then adds some, or even all, of it to a screaming hot castiron pan so it will crisp up. “Develop a nice socarrat” he will say. Socarrat (sounds like so-kah-raht) is the wonderful, caramelized bottom layer of a perfect paella when the rice is done, and the liquid is absorbed. But it’s not just paella Bobby adds socarrat to, just about anything he cooks with rice, he’ll add this crispy trick. The other night he put crispy rice in a burrito. He won. Another of his devilish tricks is so simple it’s embarrassing. Toasted breadcrumbs. Yep, one of the world’s most renowned chefs will grab a box of panko breadcrumbs, toast them in a pan with a little butter and garlic, et voila! He is praised for the little crunch on top. Try it, it’s crazy, but it works. I swear, if you make a box of Kraft mac and cheese and sprinkle garlic-toasted panko on top, it will be ten times better.

And a Half So now that you’re armed with Bobby Flay’s secrets to winning dishes, how do you make them even better yet? Double down. Take that broccoli with Hollandaise and add some toasted breadcrumbs. Good just got better. Add some lemon zest to the breadcrumbs and now you’ve got a little acid and some texture. You’re kicking it up two notches! Now here’s Bobby’s big trick when he knows he needs to pull out all the stops to get a win: Anchovy & Garlic Toasted Breadcrumbs with Lemon Zest, Parsley, and Parmesan. This isn’t hard to make, and it is awesome. Wait, are you scared off by the anchovy? Hold on and bear with me. It really is good. Don’t let a tiny little fish scare you off. Here’s what you do. Start by mincing a small clove of garlic and roughly chopping two anchovy filets. You can buy a small jar at the co-op so if you hate it, you won’t be wasting much; but trust me, it’s worth it. Sauté the garlic and anchovy in a pat of butter and a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. The anchovy will melt right into the fat, and you’ll forget it’s even there. Then add about a half a cup of panko and stir until it turns a nice toasty golden brown. Transfer to a small bowl and grate the zest of about half a lemon and then add a couple tablespoons of both freshly grated

Parmesan Reggiano and fresh chopped parsley into the bowl and mix it up. You can sprinkle this concoction on just about anything. I’ve used it on lamb chops and polenta (see photo), all sorts of pasta and it even makes a boring grilled chicken breast taste great. The first time I made it my beloved declared “Where has this been all my life?!” It’s that good. Why? It adds salt (which most of us under-season our food), texture and acid. Then the parsley adds freshness. And the anchovy? You won’t taste “fishy”, but it will add seasoning, richness and a depth of flavor that is hard to describe. I think yummy may be the best word for it. Seriously, if you heat up a can of Chef Boyardee Beefaroni and sprinkle these breadcrumbs on top, it will taste good. There you have it, three and half tricks from an Iron Chef, passed on by a guy who’s just a home cook who watches too much TV. As you’re making dinner tonight, think about adding a little acid, a little sauce, a little texture or, maybe, all of the above. Do yourself a favor, eat something good today.

t used to be 50. Now, anyone approaching their 45th birthday should talk to their primary care provider to schedule a possibly life-saving colonoscopy. It’s an exam that can stop colorectal cancer, which is among the most common – and deadly – forms of the disease. Avera Medical Group and the American Cancer Association both recommend the new age guideline.

Why the Guidelines Changed Over the last 20 years, experts in the field of oncology and gastroenterology

noticed trends, including an increase of more than 10% of colorectal cancers in people ages 20–50. A study published in January 2022 shows people ages 20–39 have had the sharpest increase in early-onset cancers in glands within organs, including the colon. These cancers are known as adenocarcinomas. Non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic populations experiencing greater proportions of the disease, according to the study. This study show how changing

recommended age to 45 makes sense. The sooner the colon exam occurs, the more likely providers can either detect it, or better yet, stop colon cancer in its tracks.

Why Colonoscopy is Your Best Choice Colonoscopy is widely considered the best exam to stop this cancer for a reason: it can not only detect colon cancer early, they can stop it from developing altogether by removing precancerous polyps. Doctors use a scope fitted with a tiny camera to explore your colon, and if they

• Fatigue – Internal bleeding in the colon can prevent oxygen from circulating in the blood, causing you to feel tired. Your skin might appear pale, too. • A bdominal pain – Constant gas, cramps or bloating, along with discomfort, can all be signs of something going on down below. • Change in bowel habits – If you go from “once a day” to “a few times a day” it could be nothing. We all face bouts of constipation or diarrhea for many reasons unrelated to cancer. But if it seems abrupt or the shift is dramatic – talk to your provider. • Weight loss – Food becomes energy in a healthy digestive system. When cancer impacts the normal process, you could have unintentional weight loss. It’s a warning sign.

How to Prevent Colon Cancer Colon cancer can happen to healthy people who eat well and exercise daily. It can occur in people who have too much pizza and beer every day, too. Your genetic makeup is something you cannot change. But if you’re aware of it, you can lower your risk. Ask your parents and grandparents about family health history, and be ready to ask more than once. Cancer history can be a topic people prefer to avoid. If your family has that history, your doctor may encourage you to get a colonoscopy before 45. find a polyp, they can remove it right then and there. If they find a lesion, they can biopsy it and determine if you need further surgery or other treatment. Early detection offers the best chance for a better outcome should you receive a cancer diagnosis. Other screening tests, like stool immunochemical and DNA tests, can detect cancer and/or blood in the stool. But if it comes back positive, you still need to have a colonoscopy. And, it doesn’t offer the doctor an opportunity to spot and remove a precancerous polyp.

When people fear (and blow off) this vital examination, they’re just giving those precancerous or cancerous masses a chance to grow. However, any screening test for colon cancer is better than no screening at all, so talk to your doctor about your options.

Signs of Colon Cancer Talk to your doctor if you experience any of these: • Blood – Watch for blood in your stools. • Black – Sometimes blood will lead to stools that are tar-like and black in color.

You can lower your risk of colon cancer with these steps, too: • Exercise regularly • Maintain a healthy weight • Follow a diet low in fat and high in fiber • See your provider at least annually Simply put: If you’re 45, or close to it, talk to your provider about colon cancer. If you’re already 45 and postponed yours, step up and get it on the schedule. It can literally save your life. Learn more at Avera.org/Colon.

Victorian Girl Day Camp at the Pettigrew Home & Museum There are many activities happening at the Pettigrew Home & Museum this summer. These fun and festive sweet St. Patrick’s Day-inspired treats will be sure to charm your friends and family. They are so simple to make and tasty for both kids and adults!

Rolo Shamrock Pretzels

Materials Needed: 1 bag of mini pretzels, Rolos, plain green M&Ms, parchment paper, and a cookie sheet. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and create clover shapes with 3 mini pretzels each. Make sure the side with the indent is on the outside of each cloverleaf. Add a Rolo in the center of each of your pretzel clovers. When each clover has a Rolo, carefully place the cookie sheet into the oven, making sure none of the clovers shift around. Bake for 3 minutes, or until the Rolo is slightly melted. Once out of the oven, carefully place an M&M in the center of each clover on the cookie sheet. Do this step while the Rolos are still warm because they will harden quickly once they start to cool down. Let them cool completely and enjoy them as a festive treat for all!

Rainbow Pretzel Sticks

Materials: Fruit Loops, pretzel sticks, and mini marshmallows

These are super simple to make with just 3 easy ingredients. Thread the Fruit Loops in the order of the colors of the rainbow onto the pretzel stick. This will be the hardest part, as you will have to be gentle and twist the Fruit Loop onto the stick without breaking it. Some might break, but it will still be fun to try again until it stays on. Finish with a mini marshmallow on either side of the rainbow pattern, and you have some bite-sized rainbow treats for the holiday!

Leprechaun’s Hat Treat Cups

Materials: Paper cups, green and black construction paper, tape, a stapler or glue, a mug, a pencil, scissors, and gold pipe cleaners. Cut a strip from the green construction paper that is the same height and width as your paper cup. Staple or glue the green strip to the outside of your cup, covering it so that it is fully green in color. Cut a strip from the black construction paper that is the same width as your green paper and cup, yet much shorter. This will be the hat’s belt. Glue or staple this onto the bottom portion of your cup, on top of the green paper. Take a gold pipe cleaner and cut it in half. Form one half into a square shape and connect this to the top middle portion of your black belt on the hat. Find a mug with a mouth that is wider than the mouth of your paper cup. Trace the top portion of your mug onto the green paper and cut it out. This will be the hat rim. Place some tape on the bottom part of your paper cup and place it on top of your rim. You now have a leprechaun’s hat treat cup, ready to fill with any St. Patrick’s Day goodies you want to share!
