It IS Easy Being Green at ‘Brosia Bowl

Although Kermit the Frog once lamented that it’s not easy being green, one Sioux Falls business owner has elevated the profile of “green” with a plant-based food truck and restaurant.

It’s as if she was destined to get into this business because her name is…Darcy Green.

Knowing what kind of food she wanted to serve was the easy part, because plant-based meals were important to her personally, and she wasn’t finding many places in Sioux Falls offering 100% plant-based options. It took a little more thought to come up with a name, however.

“My whole concept was building a bowl of tasty food,” Green explains, “so I was thinking about something like build-a-bowl. But then someone advised me to find my own unique

word. I stumbled upon the word ‘ambrosia,’ which is Greek for ‘the food of the gods.’ I just modified it a little to create ‘Brosia Bowl.”

When Green first started out a few years ago, her focus was on food prep, selling meals at places like Pomegranate Market in Sioux Falls, as well as locations like the farmer’s market in Brookings. The business evolved quickly, with Green adding a food truck last year that became popular at sites like Levitt at the Falls concerts and the Falls Park Farmer’s Market. Then, an unexpected opportunity presented itself. The Jones Building in downtown Sioux Falls was seeing some changes with business relocations, leaving an opening next to The Source Coffee Roastery + Taproom. While it hadn’t been in Green’s immediate plan to have a storefront, she knew

she couldn’t pass up the space.

Now, two months after opening the restaurant, she knows it was the right decision. From Tuesdays through Saturdays, people can stop by ‘Brosia Bowl to try a wide array of plant-based grain bowls, salads and wraps from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The bowls start with a grain, such as quinoa, white rice or brown rice and add a tasty combination of plant-based protein, fruits and vegetables and spices. Bowl combinations include Black Bean Burrito, Teriyaki Chick’n, Thai Peanut and Creamy Coconut Curry. Some people may think salads are boring, but not at ‘Brosia Bowl. The salads are as pretty as they are delicious. The Greek Salad, for example, includes roasted chickpeas, quinoa, cherry tomatoes, parsley,

14 out and about | CONCIERGE

cucumbers, kalamata olives, vegan feta, red onions and soy tzatziki dressing. One of the most popular items is the Winter Salad, featuring roasted chickpeas, quinoa, apples, pears, cranberries, walnuts, red onions, vegan feta and white vinaigrette. If you’re on the go, you can get any salad made as a wrap so that it’s portable.

The flavors at ‘Brosia Bowl range from savory to spicy to sweet, so there is truly something for everyone. And, if you haven’t tried plant-based meals that feature meatalternatives, chances are you won’t be able to tell the difference.

“You can add Chick’n to any salad or wrap for just a bit extra,” Green says. “Chick’n is a plant-based protein. People love the Chick’n and Tofu Scramble and tell us they couldn’t tell the difference.”

You’ve always heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? Well, you can get your day started off on the right foot at ‘Brosia Bowl with roasted red potatoes, tofu scramble, pico de gallo and cheddar cheese topped with crunchy tortilla strips. It’s perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner as a bowl or as a Breakfast Burrito.

To satisfy your sweet tooth, Green offers dessert bars from another new plant-based business, the Bee Loved Kitchen, with flavors such as chocolate cherry espresso, key lime and peanut butter chocolate.

Green is mindful about her menu and providing good food to fuel the body, and she is just as mindful about other aspects of her business. ‘Brosia Bowl uses all-compostable packaging, from the containers to the forks.

Be sure to follow ‘Brosia Bowl on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) to find out where you can find the food truck and what meals are being featured in the graband-go section at Pomegranate Market. You can also order online through Google or by downloading the Clover app.

By the end of his song, Kermit the Frog realizes that green isn’t so bad, saying, “I am green and it’ll do fine. It’s beautiful and I think it’s what I wanna be.”

As for ‘Brosia Bowl…it’s green, and it’ll do fine. And, it’s just what Darcy Green was hoping it would be.

2022 Hope for the Holidays Gala

Join us for our 2022 Hope for the Holidays Gala in Sioux Falls! This event will be held on November 4th at The District here in Sioux Falls. The evening will be an elegant, seated meal type of night with a short program and some live/silent auction items to bid on. We will have a patient story, some entertainment, and the chance to support cancer research both locally and at the national level. We have a lot of great people, including our outstanding co-chairs Micki Lundin and Stacy Wrightsman, involved in our event planning this year. Our planning committee has been hard at work to truly elevate this event and make it both an entertaining/successful fundraiser which will help us serve an even greater number of patients. We’re confident it will be a night to remember!

Event Co-Chairs, Micki Lundin and Stacy Wrightsman, say, “We are both so proud to come together and lead the Board of Ambassadors’ planning of the ACS Hope For the Holidays Gala this year. We wanted to do this so that the American Cancer Society is highlighted as a strong partner to both Avera and Sanford in the fight against cancer, and in the fight for a cure. Raising dollars for research benefits both health systems locally, as it supports the work we all do to find the very best treatments for the patients we serve.”

The Sioux Falls Gala brings together a premier group of businesses, organizations, and area professionals to support the American Cancer Society’s mission to eliminate cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and local support of patient services.

The American Cancer Society exists because the burden of cancer is unacceptably high. We are the only organization that integrates advocacy, discovery, and direct patient support to measurably improve the lives of cancer patients and their families.

Cancer affects everyone, but it doesn’t affect everyone equally. We are working to ensure everyone has a fair and just opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.

With local support, we can continue to reduce the burden of cancer for local patients and their families. Proceeds that we raise at the Sioux Falls Gala will allow the American Cancer Society to continue funding the life-saving research that helps South Dakota cancer patients every single day.

Cancer directly touches the lives of people throughout our community. Our distinguished and community events to align allow community members to help us fight back against a disease that has, or will, touch nearly every friend, family member, colleague, neighbor, or loved one:

• 6 in 10 people have had an immediate family member or close friend with cancer.

• 1 in 4 people have served as a caregiver to someone with cancer.

• 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will develop cancer during their lifetime.

From 1991 to 2019, there has been a 32% decline in cancer mortality. We can directly track declines in the overall cancer death rate by investment in advocacy, discovery, and direct patient support. The American Cancer Society’s new goal of reducing cancer death rates in the United States by 40% by 2035 is only possible through the support of businesses, donors, and volunteers in our community and throughout the country.

The bottom line is that with your support, the American Cancer Society can save even more lives every day. We hope that you can join us for our 2022 Hope for the Holidays Gala! To learn more or to purchase your tickets for the event, you can visit http://e.givesmart.com/events/sip. Rock the Rim

Saturday, October 29th you’re going to want to make your way to the Sanford Pentagon for Rock the Rim 2022! Trevor’s Legacy Foundation has joined forces, with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, to bring you an evening you won’t forget.

On August 29, 2015, Roxanne Vogelgesang lost her 17 year old son, Trevor, in a head-on collision due to a drunk driver. Shortly thereafter, she created Trevor’s Legacy Foundation, with the mission of carrying on her son’s compassionate heart, and to bring awareness to the dangers of drinking and driving. Vogelgesang states “Trevor had three passions in life that stood out above all others; children, sports (mainly basketball) and his mom. It is my mission, to combine the three and carry on his legacy”.

Trevor’s Legacy Foundation is a 501c3, non-profit, organization founded in South Dakota, in 2016. Trevor’s foundation assists children and their families who have incurred substantial medical expenses due to serious illness or accident. Each year TLF hosts its annual Rock the Rim benefit, organized to raise funds for these families.

Funds raised ensure recipient children get the medical care they need, be it; travel & lodging to and from treatment, occupational therapy, home accessibility improvements, prescription costs or any other related expenses insurance may not cover. Recipients also gain substantial emotional support, which is vital, during their new uncertain journey.

Rock the Rim is a jam packed, high flying, edge of your seat, Skyforce basketball game where fans enjoy specialty acts during each break. Many of these acts are from the professional sports world, including;

several NBA Mascots and Dunk Teams, as well as, former contestants of ‘America’s Got Talent’, showcasing their amazing talent, leaving the crowd stunned. TLF is also proud of alumni; former ‘Nashville Star’ contestant, Charley Jenkins, and “The #1 Most Booked Halftime Act in College Basketball 2017-2019, TYLERS AMAZING BALANCING ACT”!

Fans can also find one-of-a-kind NBA player-autographed (and/or team) memorabilia on the silent auction, as well as, local hand crafted goods and services.

Rock the Rim is much more than an exciting evening out for the entire family. It is a time to come together, show support, and to help children, and their families, when they need it most. When asked her hopes for the evening, Vogelgesang stated “Trevor’s Legacy Foundation is passionate about creating a positive change for others. And Rock the Rim is about manifesting hope. That is my main goal for the evening; to bring HOPE to a world which could really use some hope right now. I aim to inspire others to strive for understanding, show kindness, and change lives. It only takes one act of kindness to begin a movement. After all our world has gone through in the recent years, I would like to be the match which reignites that.”

If you are inspired by Trevor’s story, and would like to become involved, you can visit www.trevorslegacyfoundation.org to learn more information or make your way to Rock the Rim on October 29th.

Tickets available at the door. $10 for adults. $5 children ages 4-12. Children 3 and under are free.

Halloween with the Ellerbroeks

“Growing up, I had many Halloween-themed birthday parties. It has evolved, though, into at least a week’s worth of decorating from 20-plus totes.”
32 nest | AT HOME

For Craig and Angela Ellerbroek, October means putting out another issue of etc for her magazine, prepping for the ever-popular etc Expo for her event and staying involved with their son Nick’s activities. Amidst this busy-ness, however, comes Angela’s favorite time of year…Halloween.

“I think Halloween became my favorite holiday because my birthday is right before it,” she says. “Growing up, I had many Halloween-themed birthday parties. It has evolved, though, into at least a week’s worth of decorating from 20-plus totes.”

For the month of October – well, maybe starting in mid-September – their 1940s era house is transformed into a spook-tacular display, with creepy things to catch your eye in nearly every room.

Angela and her husband Craig moved into the house 20 years ago as a young couple attracted to the unique characteristics of an older home, features like a bathroom with pink tile and a green bathtub or a little niche in the three-quarter bathroom off the kitchen originally designed to hold cigarettes.

When they started planning for a family, the Ellerbroeks decided a little more space would be beneficial, so they added on a master suite, two bedrooms and another bathroom. And…along came Nick.  Now 14, Nick’s room is filled with mementos of life as a young sports mascot, along with awards from his own sports participation. He’s already a 10-year veteran as “Peep” with the Sioux Falls Canaries, with his eye fixed on a career as a professional mascot.

Adding on to the main floor also gave the family additional room in the lower level, creating a space Angela refers to as “Craig’s area” with a bar and multiple TVs on the wall,

to ensure they can catch all the seasonal sports.

The tubs of Halloween decorations are filled with items Angela has collected over the years, while traveling or just randomly when she sees something at an antique store, estate sale or yard sale. If asked to pick

out the most unique part of the collection, she would likely say, “the puppets.”

Found at an estate sale from the neighborhood, the puppets once belonged to a man who not only was a puppeteer, but he also made

all the characters himself. Some are obvious additions to a Halloween collection, including a witch and a skeleton bride, and others she was able to incorporate into creepy vignettes.

“I’m really love vintage pieces,” Angela says. “I found old books that

once belonged to an eye doctor, that had an amazing collection of old books, so there were books about bones and skin diseases and such. Two of the puppets looked like a magician and a mad scientist. So, I put those all together on a table with a model of an eye, containers of test tubes

and old medicine bottles.”

The wonderful thing about Halloween, she adds, is that anything goes. You can find all sorts of random items and put them together…the creepier the better. That would explain why one display has little skulls

and a collection of doll heads under glass domes.

“If you look at the one with the heads, you’ll see arms in there too,” Angela laughs.

RENNER FIELD and the Lindbergh Landing

The town of Renner, South Dakota, was created in 1898, named after a local farmer, on whose land the depot for the Milwaukee railroad was built in 1907. The Mapleton Township farming community in Minnehaha County served people who were only too happy to have merchants closer to them than those in Sioux Falls. Renner has a church that is the oldest house of worship in South Dakota, along with the dubious distinction of being the site of a bank robbery by two women.

A sensational murder riled up all of Mapleton Township and the surrounding area in 1907 but Renner was generally speaking, a quiet town until men and flying machines changed everything. Flying was something that dreamers aspired to do, and not long after the Wright brothers put their primitive plane in the air at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17, 1903, men with similar ambitions went to work.

In barns and garages in various parts of South Dakota, men were happily engaged in designing and constructing their own flying machines. It just seemed so unfair that birds could fly while people had to stay grounded.

The first airplane seen above Minnehaha County skies was on June 20, 1912. The South Dakota Elks Association convinced a company known as Curtiss Pusher to launch a biplane near Sioux Falls, as part of an annual program for a large gathering of the curious. The first attempt by pilot Claude Berlin to get the plane airborne, on June 19, ended in disaster when a strong gust of wind sent the machine crashing into a fence. Berlin was embarrassed but uninjured and on the next day, after some repairs, the second attempt at take off was successful and according to the Daily ArgusLeader, “the machine was soon gliding skyward at 1000 feet in the air.” To the amazement of the spectators, it made a smooth landing at the

Clark Coats athletic field, about three miles southeast of downtown Sioux Falls, after a twelve minute flight.

Interest in manned flight only seemed to increase because the dreamers had their heads and hearts on the controls. World War I saw pilots and planes change the technology and method of warfare. The term “dogfights” was used to describe the air battles between allied and German forces. After the war ended, airplanes assumed their place in the commercial field. In April of 1919, a total of seven planes landed at the W. H. Lyons Fairgrounds on the western edge of Sioux Falls. Spectators were treated to an aerial circus that caused people cheer and talk for weeks. Unfortunately, the excitement over airplanes was compromised due to a large number of fatal crashes in other parts of the country. Still the pace of the grand experiment with flight continued unabated.

Sioux Falls First Aviator

Lt. Harold W. Tennant was a pilot who served with the US Army Air Service during World War I. He moved to Sioux Falls after the war and in 1921 bought a government surplus JN-4D airplane, commonly called a “Jenny.” He spent the summer and fall barnstorming in this region. The next year, Harold and his brother Ed formed an aerial team named “The Tennant Brothers.” Harold piloted the plane while Ed performed aerial acrobatics. Other pilots and stuntmen joined the group which was then billed as an “aerial circus.” They performed in the Sioux Falls area for several summers. In 1925, Harold Tennant was granted a Commercial (Transport) pilot’s license, the 33rd to be issued in the US and the first to a South Dakotan.

Lt. Harold W. Tennant, moved to Sioux Falls after the war ended and in 1921, he bought a government surplus plane known as an IN-4D, that soon became known as a “Jenny.” Sioux Falls’ first aviator, Herald W. Tennant, and his brother Ed, treated excited spectators to a show called an “aerial circus.” The death-defying, barnstorming stunts made the Tennant brothers local heroes as they performed over the skies of Sioux Falls and the surrounding communities during the course of four summers.

The daring brothers needed a place to park their airplanes and as it turned out, the flatlands at and around Renner filled the bill. When Tennant retired from aerial stunts, he started the Tennant Air Service and School at Renner Field in 1925. Renner Field proudly featured three hangars for plane storage along with space for maintenance and repair. Two years later, the federal government established the first air mail routes, having issued 19 contracts to private airlines.

Interest in flying seemed to peak in the summer of 1927, with the arrival of Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh, who at that time was the biggest, most well-known name in the early years of flight. A true pioneer of manned flight, Lindbergh wowed the global public when on May 20-21, 1927, he piloted his plane, the “Spirit of St. Louis,” across the Atlantic Ocean

from New York to Paris. The 33 and ½ hour trip in a single monoplane with no radio, and only simple navigational equipment was the first of its kind, making “Lucky” Lindbergh a national treasure, adored by millions.

Following the historic, trans-Atlantic flight, Lindbergh embarked on a nation-wide air tour of America that included South Dakota on its schedule. On August 27, 1927, Lindbergh took off in Fargo, North Dakota, and after flying over and circling a number of towns including Aberdeen, Redfield, Huron and Mitchell, he landed safely at Renner Field precisely at 12:00 noon right on schedule.

A massive, cheering crowd was on hand to see the historic, once in a lifetime, landing but certain restrictions were put in place. Other than the township dignitaries, no one was allowed to greet and shake hands with Lindbergh. Hero worshiping had to be done at a distance. Another strict rule was that no one would be permitted on the air field. Should anyone violate this rule, Lindbergh would abort the landing, fly away and circle Renner until the field was cleared. While on the ground, Lindbergh was photographed, took questions from reporters and gave a short address to the crowd. Then he got back into the “Spirit of St. Louis” and flew off to Sioux City. Strict rules and short visit notwithstanding,

a spirit of joy and celebration prevailed that magical summer day in 1927.

In December of 1927, Dakota Airlines became the first full-scale flight facility to serve the Sioux Falls area. Harold Tennant sought to keep pace with the new and thrilling airline business that seemed to have adopted a “sky is the limit” attitude. But tragedy struck on September 28, 1928 when Tennant’s plane, a Kari-keen Sioux Coupe, crashed in a Renner pasture. Both Tennant, and his passenger Frank Kuehn, were killed.

It was a terrible loss for the budding industry for the popular and gusty Tennant seemed to be on the cusp of national fame. Nevertheless, interest in flying continued apace. South Dakota girl, Nellie Willhite, a flight student at Renner School, became first licensed female in the state and the first deaf pilot in the United States.

The flying fever would know no cure; the deniers and nay sayers — the sane people who insisted that the automobile would never replace the horse and buggy — could only squeak with their faint, negative voices. The wave of optimism by the oncoming rush of eager pilots and new planes dominated the field and the public mind. In the final analysis, the uniquely American response to unbelievers is always the same. Innovation wins every time.

Rooster!

As a guy who likes to cook, I’m used to people asking me for favorite recipes and tips on how to cook this or what to do with that. It goes with the territory, and it usually leads to a lively conversation. I can’t help myself, it’s what happens when you ask a guy about a hobby; you’re likely to learn more than you really want to know. Don’t believe me? Ask a golfer what he thinks you can do to improve your handicap or a fisherman what kind of bait he’s been using for walleye. You’ll likely get more information than you wanted to know!

The one cooking question I’m asked most often includes two of my hobbies, hunting and cooking. People ask about how I cook pheasant. Seriously, my unscientific guess is that half of the questions I get about cooking are about pheasant, and most of

those are about THE pheasant recipe; my now infamous Pheasant with Olive. More questions about roosters than pasta sauces, vegetables and all manner of desserts combined… people call, text and email asking about that one dish.

A little back story: I’ve hunted pheasants since I was old enough to carry a shotgun, and I still get excited when I hear the cackle of a pheasant and someone yells “rooster!” But growing up in Iowa, we’d be lucky to bag one or two a day. When I moved to South Dakota more than 30 years ago, I suddenly started filling the freezer with pheasants. So, I started looking for recipes and almost every one I found tried to hide the bird in a pool of cream of mushroom soup.

As I dug deep, I found more options; I tested, tasted, and tweaked recipes. I

discovered that when it was treated right, pheasant could be good without any cream of mushroom soup. Then I started looking at other game recipes for quail, duck, and goose. This one is an amalgamation of a several recipes for game birds rolled into one.

I started sharing this recipe back in the early ‘90s and in 1994, the local daily paper published it. In October of 2009 I ran the recipe in one of the first columns I’d written for this publication. In August of this year, I found myself talking about the upcoming pheasant season, so I’ve decided that it’s time to run it again. The olives bring a big bold, salty kick and the wine and tomatoes make a nice, sweet broth with just enough acidity to stand up to the pheasant. I serve it over rice, so you get every drop of the sauce.

Pheasant with Olives

4 pheasant breasts cut into half-inch pieces

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1 medium sweet yellow onion, diced

3 to 4 cloves of garlic, chopped fine

1 cup of good, dry red wine (Cabernet, Chianti or red zinfandel work well)

One 28 ounce can of diced San Marzano tomatoes

1/4 cup fresh parsley chopped fine

1 tablespoon each fresh rosemary, basil and oregano, chopped fine

One 12 ounce jar of green olives, stuffed with pimentos, drained and rinsed

Two tablespoons of capers, drained and rinsed

Salt and pepper

Two cups of white or brown rice, cooked

Season the pheasant with salt and pepper and brown the chunks in a large skillet with two tablespoons olive oil. Remove and set aside. Sauté the onion in remaining olive oil over medium heat until soft and transparent, then add the garlic and cook for a few more minutes. Return the pheasant and deglaze the pan with the red wine. Add the tomatoes, the rosemary, basil and oregano. Cover and simmer for about a half an hour, then add the olives and capers and cook for another half hour. The pheasant should be tender. Stir in the parsley and serve over rice.

Our state bird is a proud animal with beautiful plumage. You and the family pooch worked hard to bring them home. They deserve better than a slow simmer in a crockpot full of cream of mushroom soup. So, get those roosters out of the freezer and do yourself a favor, eat something good today.

What were you doing in 1993? Waco, Texas, was under siege, Frasier was a hit on Must See TV, the silly ramblings of Beavis and Butthead ruled MTV, and you were probably trying to figure out if John Wayne Bobbitt would ever be whole again. The top five movies in 1993 were Jurassic Park, Mrs. Doubtfire, The Fugitive, Schindler’s List, and Indecent Proposal. What you probably didn’t know was happening in 1993 was a small town in the south of Tuscany was harvesting one of the best vintages of Brunello di Montalcino.

I was fortunate enough to get my hands on this vintage about 15 years ago. Moments like this don’t happen too often. To me, being able to even get a chance at a 1993 Brunello was a dream. I would compare this feeling to when I hit my first homerun in Little League as an eleven-year-old. I would compare it the game-winning goal I scored as a senior in high school to get my team into the state finals. I would compare it to any moment in my life when those butterflies flutter in my stomach. There’s a reason why they (the wine experts) consider 1993 to be exceptional.

This wine wasn’t just any wine, and it wasn’t just any Brunello di Montalcino, it was Banfi Poggio All’Oro Riserva (only made during exceptional vintages — did I mention that?) For those of you unfamiliar with Brunello di Montalcino, let me give you a glimpse into the magnificence that is The Big Brown grape. Grown in the small town of Montalcino (in the south of Tuscany,) the Brunello grape is actually a clone of the Sangiovese grape. If that grape sounds familiar to you, it should: Sangiovese is what is used to make Chianti.

There are so many unique things about Brunello. For example, it can only be made in the town of Montalcino. Similar to the laws regarding Champagne and Chianti, where only grapes that are grown and harvested in those geographical areas can be called their respective names, Brunello di Montalcino must be made from 100% Sangiovese grown in Montalcino… no where else in the world.

Brunello also must undergo extensive aging in oak before it is released for sale. A minimum of four years in oak is the rule, five years for a Riserva, and it is required that it spends at least six months in the bottle before release. So, a Brunello that was harvested in 2017 will not be released until January 1, 2022.

Getting back to my exclusive tasting of this rare 1993 bottle of wine, which, by the way, my friend found at an undisclosed gas station in South Dakota. How he got lucky enough to find it there, I don’t know. What I do know, is that I wasn’t going to let him open this bottle without me!

I remember it like it was yesterday. A group of us met up with my friend, who’s in the wine business, his girlfriend, who was recovering from knee surgery, myself, my wife, and two of our mutual friends — one who owns a wine and liquor store in Rapid City, and the other a self-proclaimed cigar aficionado living in Fort Worth, Texas. Quite the collection of people, I must say.

1993

As I looked around the table, my competitive juices started flowing. Who was going to get a taste of this 1993 Brunello di Montalcino special reserve, probably only one of a few hundred bottles or less left in the world. Obviously, my friend who found the bottle would drink some, that’s only fair. His girlfriend is taking pain meds for her knee… maybe she’ll only have a sip? My wife…she’ll drink some but will feel guilty because it’s such a rare wine, and she’ll want the girlfriend to have her share. The liquor store owner will want to savor it because it will make him that much more credible at his job; I can live with that. But the cigar guy doesn’t have any taste buds left from two straight nights of debauchery… that’s it, he’s cut off!

All this ran through my head even before the corkscrew pierced the capsule. Eventually, after a bottle of Pinot Noir to start the night off, and a bottle of Chianti Classico as an intermezzo, we all got to taste my friend’s treasure. We had it opened and decanted for about an hour-and-a-half before we imbibed a single drop. I’m sure it must have been funny to watch four grown men pass around a decanter full of wine, taking long sniffs, saying things like, “Ah, a fine bouquet,” or “It’s a bit musty,” or “Do you think it’s corked?!” I caught my wife rolling her eyes at me as I volunteered my opinion of the nose which smelled earthy with hints of dark fruit and leather.

Anyway, we had waited long enough; it was the moment of truth… paradise. The wine had thick legs and a bright garnet hue. The nose was subtle which is consistent with a wine that has been aged for a long time. As I sipped on my first taste, I closed my eyes and imagined what it was like in the vineyard, in Montalcino, in the south of Tuscany, in 1993. Then I tasted it — the earth, the deep cherry Sangiovese flavor, the terroir. The finish lingered on my palate long after I had swallowed my last ounce. It was ethereal.

Thank you to my good friend with his good luck and good graces. It was something I’ll always remember… the wine, the company, and the butterflies. Carpe Vino!

Oh, the Silly Things

GROWNUPS ARE AFRAID OF

Picture a beautiful summer day in the Big Horn Mountains. The air is crisp and filled with the sound of a mountain stream. We’re on a mission to climb to the top of a boulder pile. So,we begin hopping from one boulder to the next. It’s a fun challenge. But because the boulders are close enough together –and large enough, it’s not dangerous. I’m having the time of my adult life – feeling like a kid again. Loving this moment with my husband and our daughter. And then I see a spider. It’s not just any spider. It’s an orb-weaver spider. Its body is about an inch in diameter and its legs are striped. My heart stops. I’m paralyzed...but not really because a loud scream escapes me. I look for an escape route and see another orb-weaver spider. And another. And another. Turns out, between every boulder is a web and on that web is a spider. I am now in my own personal hell. I. Hate. Spiders. My husband, Shon, comes to my rescue and escorts me off the boulder pile. He and our daughter finish the adventure without me. I try to rationalize my fear so I can resume what had been a fun family adventure. “I’m a fullgrown woman. This spider is not poisonous. In fact, it is dropping down from its web to avoid me. “It doesn’t help. I sit by the stream and wait for my family to finish their fun, mountain adventure without me.

The truth is, when it comes to fear, there is no amount of rational thinking that can talk me down. Spiders are among the silly things that I’m afraid of. In fact, I am so scared of spiders that one day, Shon and I were driving to a meeting together and a large black spider dropped down from behind our car’s visor. Fortunately, we were driving slowly because my reaction was to open the car door. Crazy, I know. But I could not help it. Even the plastic spiders I use when I decorate for Halloween give me the willies. Just writing about spiders for this column speeds up my heart rate. Why am I afraid of spiders? I really don’t know. What I do know is they have a powerful effect on me. If I see one and I’m alone, I have to vacate the area.

I have paid babysitters to help me clean my basement so that I would not be alone should I happen upon a spider. One time, when my husband was out of town on a work trip, I wanted to garden, but could not because of a large garden spider. So, I went next door and asked my neighbor to remove the spider. He was so kind and took care of it.

Fear and things that scare come to mind as I decorate for Halloween. I want my home to be spooky, but mostly in a delightful way...if that makes sense. Decorating for Halloween is something our daughter, Parker, and I love to do together. The other day we were discussing our Halloween décor style. It’s not cute and cuddly. But it’s also not gruesome. We settled on describing it as “sophisticated scary.” Our collection of decorations includes caged black rats, black birds, old black and white photos, ghostly mirror clings and lots of spiders and webbing. When we decorate, I hang the webbing on our front porch and Parker places the spiders. Because like I mentioned earlier, even plastic spiders scare me.

For Self-Care Habits, Set Smart Expectations

Too often, when we hear the expression “self-care” we imagine an annual island getaway or some afternoons in a spa. But smaller – and more regular –approaches to personal maintenance will produce better results.

“We wouldn’t think of doing exercise to maintain our physical health, as something we do just once a year when we have the time,” said Amber Reints, PMHNP, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner at Avera McKennan Behavioral Health. “We can’t afford to relegate self-care as something we’ll only do when we have time.”

What Is Self-Care?

Self-care is simple – it’s time you deliberately take for yourself. It’s your job to define what helps replenish your mental health.

It can be anything from a bubble bath or

reading to going to the gym. It can as simple as a five-minute break to do breathing exercises.

Simple Steps for Self-Care

Look at your current routine and see if you can include a few simple steps that add depth to self-care, benefiting your mental health:

• Take three big, deep breaths after leaving your car but before going into work or when you get home from your busy day.

• Play a podcast, book-on-tape or other enjoyable recording during your drive to work (or home).

• Go through your list of things you’re grateful for when you’re on an elevator or when waiting in a line.

• Try some affirmations, prayers or reflections on a regular basis – aim for daily at first, and more as you get into a routine.

“Tiny steps are better than big and bold ones in self-care,” Reints said. “Look to add or adjust a few small things so there’s something soothing, encouraging or enjoyable in your day-to-day routine.”

Remember self-care is not selfish. Remember the payoff: when you commit to self-care, your work, family, friends and teammates will all benefit.

Barriers Beware, Here Comes Self-Care

It can be hard to keep a routine, in part because we can sabotage our own efforts. Those tiny voices in our head that dismiss our efforts can be tamed, Reints said.

She shared a hypothetical that presents a common barrier: You get home, your self-care walk plan in place when suddenly a spouse or

child needs you “now.”

What do you do? You know self-care is important, but you might feel guilt.

“It’s important to stop and rethink,” she said. “Is that guilt unreasonable? Can your loved one wait briefly while you care for you?”

Sometimes we can best care for ourselves when we step back and imagine we’re coaching a friend. Say a friend said they needed a 10-minute walk when they get home, “If they asked, you’d likely encourage them to take it,” Reints said. “You can look at yourself in the same way – offer yourself the same space for grace – and time for self-care.”

Why Does Self-Care Matter?

Your self-care habits are important because they replenish your energy and can challenge the stress and anxiety you face during the day’s challenges.

“Self-care is like rest – look at caring for your mind and spirit as you would caring for your body,” she said. “Exercise and activity

benefit you on many levels.”

Reints said look at caring for your mind and spirit as you would care for your body.

Also, remember that your self-care goes beyond you – you’re modeling a good trait for your kids, spouse, friends, colleagues, and loved ones around you.

Need Help With Self Care?

Some life events and circumstances can leave you in a place that’s beyond self-care.

If you find yourself struggling, or if maybe symptoms of depression or anxiety are barriers to you being able to practice self-care, seek

support from a professional.

Many people have Employee Assistance Program (EAP) benefits through their employer. This can include services to help with stress, anxiety and other issues. Check with your human resources department to see if this is available to you.

Sticky Spider Web Toss

highlight

Materials: hula hoop, masking tape, and cotton balls.

Create a spider web by placing masking tape across a hula hoop (or door frame, open cardboard box, or any other space that works).  Start with long strips of tape to create the base of the web, then tear off shorter pieces to create the middle portions in between the longer strips. Make sure to keep the sticky side of the tape all on one side, and that it will be sticky enough to catch a cotton ball.

Find a place to put the spider web where it will stay in place.  We found that a window frame was perfect for our hula hoop to squeeze into and an excellent location for tossing cotton balls from a short distance from the house.  The kids had a goal of seeing who could get their cotton ball the closest to the center of the spider web.  They soon decided that simply tossing the cotton balls at the web was enough fun to be had and the neighbors joined in as well!

Materials: 6-sided die, construction paper in white, orange, and black, a black marker, scissors, glue, and a container for small game pieces such as a ziploc bag or pencil box.

Cut out large pumpkin shapes from orange paper, making as many as you need for the number of kids who will be taking part.  Next, cut out various pieces from black and white paper that can be used as elements for the face of a Jack-OLantern.  Some ideas include triangles, circles, sharp teeth, buck teeth, hair, earrings, mustaches, eyebrows, nostrils, etc.  Place these pieces spread out on top of a surface where the kids can see their options.

Glue the orange pumpkin shapes onto a white piece of paper.  Next to the pumpkin, create a key showing what each side of the die will mean.  For example, if a four is rolled, they need to choose a shape for their nose.  If a six is rolled, they need to choose an embellishment such as some facial hair, jewelry, or a hat.  Keep rolling the die until your kids are happy with their pumpkin’s face or turn it into a game to see who can finish their Jack-OLantern first.

When it comes time to put it all away, save the pieces in a bag and label it for future play!
