Brad Keselowski Moving to the No. 48?! In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes a look at some of the biggest stories going into the Auto Club 400 in California this weekend. And this week is a doozy to be sure, with a blockbuster rumor hitting the online community from a very unlikely source. With the 2020 season being the last for Jimmie Johnson, a lot of questions have swirled 0 0 4

around not just his future (Indy maybe?), but also around who would take the driver’s seat in the now iconic No. 48 for Hendrick Motorsports. Follow along as Eric breaks down the startling theory that veteran Brad Keselowski, currently comfortable over at Team Penske, might find himself in the seat of Jimmie Johnson’s vacated No. 48 next year. What? How? You’ll have to watch the episode to find out!

things to watch at Auto club The Wild, Wild West Several Top Drivers Looking to Rebound at Auto Club Speedway Welcome to Round Three. With two races down and a whopping 34 still to go, the NASCAR Cup Series continues its West Coast Swing this weekend with a visit to Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California for Sunday’s Auto Club 400. While Kyle Busch is the defending race winner, one of Busch’s biggest rivals — Joey Logano — is the talk of the town after winning this past weekend in Las Vegas. Following are five things to watch for in and leading up to Sunday afternoon’s highly anticipated showdown in Southern California. by Jared Turner

A Joe Gibbs Racing Rebound
M
ake no mistake about it: Last weekend’s race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway wasn’t particularly kind to Joe Gibbs Racing, which uncharacteristically failed to place any of its four drivers in the top 10 and, perhaps even more shockingly, placed only one — Kyle Busch — in the top five. To say JGR merely hopes to rebound this weekend in Fontana would be an understatement of epic proportions. While it’s true that no driver or team ever enjoys a bad day, no organization is less accustomed to bad days than JGR, which won 19 of 36 points races last year and opened 2020 in predictably grandiose fashion with JGR driver Denny Hamlin winning the Daytona 500. For JGR, days like the one the organization endured in Sin City are understandably hard to swallow, if for no other reason besides the fact that they are so incredibly rare. Rest assured that JGR will stop at nothing to bounce back big in Fontana.

Tributes To Kobe Bryant
W
ith Auto Club Speedway being only an hour’s drive from Los Angeles, it’s appropriate that more than one driver and team will pay tribute this weekend to Los Angeles Lakers basketball legend Kobe Brynasant, who died in a helicopter crash with eight others just a month ago. Axalta — primary sponsor on the No. 24 Chevrolet of William Byron — will remember the victims of the tragic accident with a special one-race-only purple and gold paint scheme on Byron’s car, which carries the same number that Bryant wore for part of his career with the Lakers. Axalta will also make a donation to After-School All-Stars, a non-profit organization where Bryant served as a National Ambassador. “It’s humbling to be able to run such a special car, especially in the Los Angeles area,” Byron said. “I’m a huge sports fan and followed Kobe’s career really closely.” Meanwhile, Ryan Blaney’s No. 12 car will carry a Kobe Bryant tribute paint scheme from primary sponsor BODYARMOR.

Jimmie Johnson’s Final Home Game
O
f all the tracks on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule, none is more near and dear to Jimmie Johnson’s heart than Auto Club Speedway — a two-mile oval situated only about an hour and 45 minutes down the road from Johnson’s hometown of El Cajon, California. Along with being a home game of sorts for Johnson, ACS has also produced some of the seven-time champion’s greatest moments behind the wheel. In fact, Fontana has played host to six of Johnson’s 83 premier series wins — including career victory No. 1 recorded early in his rookie season of 2002. It’s no wonder, then, that Johnson has long wore his affinity for all things Fontana on his proverbial sleeve. Needless to say, this weekend will undoubtedly be a bittersweet one for the Hendrick Motorsports driver as he competes for what will likely be the final time on not only his home turf but at a place that has served him incredibly well.

A Rejuvenated Hendrick Motorsports
A
lthough it might not have been reflected in the final finishing order, last Sunday’s race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway bodes well for Hendrick Motorsports heading to Fontana. Prior to suffering a late-race tire failure that ruined his hopes of victory, Hendrick driver Chase Elliott led a race-high 70 laps, won both of the first two stages and looked to have the fastest car on the track. Meanwhile, Hendrick driver Alex Bowman appeared poised to come home second before a caution with under five laps to go jumbled up the running order. While neither Elliott nor Bowman ultimately got the finish they deserved, the Hendrick organization still placed a driver in the top five by virtue of Jimmie Johnson’s fifth-place finish. While it’s too early to draw any firm conclusions from one non-superspeedway race, early signs suggest that Hendrick Motorsports as a whole might be primed for its best season since Johnson won his last title in 2016.

immie Johnson will hardly be the only driver in Sunday’s field who calls California home. Other natives of the Golden State set to compete in this weekend’s 400-mile affair include Kevin Harvick (Bakersfield), Kyle Larson (Elk Grove), Matt DiBenedetto (Grass Valley), and rookies Tyler Reddick (Corning) and Cole Custer (Ladera Ranch). Although every driver who takes the green flag would love to win on Sunday, the race doesn’t carry any extra special meaning for most drivers. However, for the guys who were born and grew up in California, there’s hardly any race on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule that matters more. “Auto Club Speedway is by far one of my favorite tracks we go to,” said 2014 series champion Harvick, whose lone victory to date at ACS came in March 2011 with his former team at Richard Childress Racing. “It’s top three on my list as far as tracks that I’m excited to go to.”

■■ Jimmie Johnson’s 2013 win at Dover was his eighth at the track.
JJ’s Eighth Win at Dover Made History by Jared turner
I
t’s no secret that Jimmie Johnson loves racing at Dover International Speedway. But what has been the secret to Johnson’s incredible success over the years at the high-banked track known as The Monster Mile? The seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion has never quite said exactly, but there’s at least one thing he’s readily willing to admit. “My love for it has grown deeper,” Johnson said of the 1-mile Delaware oval. “It’s a cool track, and I enjoy it so much. It’s a feeling I’ve been able to keep for a lot of years.” Johnson’s affinity for Dover reached an all-time high on September 29, 2013 when he triumphed there for a record-eighth time — snapping a tie he had previously held with NASCAR Hall of Famers Bobby Allison and Richard Petty for the most wins on the high-speed, concrete mile. The accomplishment certainly wasn’t lost on Johnson, a true historian of the sport at which he’s been so successful. “Truthfully, it was the first thought that went through my mind
0 2 0

when I crossed the finish line,” said Johnson, who at the time was also chasing a sixth championship that he ultimately captured at Homestead-Miami Speedway that November. “It wasn’t long after I thought about the impact of winning in the (playoffs).” Johnson’s win was certainly no fluke; he led 243 of the race’s 400 laps and — in typical Dover fashion — had the dominant car. Johnson’s previous Dover victories had come in 2002 and 2009 (when he earned the season sweep), 2005, 2010 and 2012. “You’ve got to win when you’re at your best track,” Johnson said. “We had to win here today. I think any points on the 18 (Kyle Busch) or 20 (Matt Kenseth) would have been a very good day. Max points; it’s an awesome day.” And a historymaking day as well.

In the Hot seat Tyler Reddick by Rob Tiongson
Each week during the NASCAR season, Rob Tiongson will share an interview with a driver. This week, he interviews NASCAR Cup Series driver Tyler Reddick.
■■ Tyler Reddick drives the No. 8 Chevrolet in the Cup Series.
▶▶ Following your back-to-back NASCAR XFINITY Series championships, you’re driving Richard Childress Racing’s No. 8 Chevy. How special is it to compete in the Cup Series this year? “It means a lot. It’s exciting stuff. I know that it’s going to be difficult, but I know our guys are up for the challenge as we always have been.” ▶▶ Like most sports, NASCAR embraces the eSports movement with the iRacing and NASCAR Heat platforms. What’s your take on this and the potential for virtual racers crossing over to on-track racing? “At this point, with where sim racing’s at, those guys are really talented with their reactions and what they see with their eyes, and what they’re able to break apart and put back together to go fast, whether that’s on an iRacing simulator or NASCAR Heat, what they do is incredible. It’s a different style of racing. And for them to go as fast as they do, sometimes compared to guys like me who rely on instinct and what we feel in the car, it’s totally different. Some of the really cool simulators that we test on are about as close as real life as you can get. I’m sure the simulators will get advanced enough where people will have stuff moving around. When that happens, when you feel like you’re going as fast as you truly are, I’d say that’s when those drivers will make that crossover. What those drivers see and react to, whether it’s in the feedback with the steering wheel, or in the controller and their eyes, is a different feel and beyond what some drivers like myself are doing in a racecar.” 0 2 2

Opportunity of a Lifetime Howard Enjoys Time on the Road with Germain Racing by Ben white
R
andall Howard, transporter driver for Germain Racing and driver Ty Dillon, was introduced to NASCAR when he was 14 through a family trip from his hometown of Thomasville, N.C., to see the 1978 Daytona 500. Many years passed before his entrance into NASCAR became a reality. Having worked as a commercial truck driver, Howard was given the opportunity to come into the sport after learning of an opening with one of the Cup Series teams. “My son, Matthew Howard, is an engine tuner with ECR Engines,” Howard said. “He told me about an opening with StarCom Racing. They needed a transporter driver for their No.99 team so I did that. They decided to run only one team, which is the 00 car. When that happened, I came over to Germain Racing. My first race with this team was at Indianapolis in 2018.” Like the other 39 teams that compete in the Cup Series on a weekly basis, there’s work to be done before transporters leave for the next race on the schedule. “Every week we go back and restock everything,” Howard said. “That means gears, transmissions, parts, spare motor, and the car that’s going to be run that week, naturally. Once the primary car gets loaded at the top, we can load the bottom. “We make sure everything on and around the transporter is clean. I also try to make sure the guys have what they need. Little things like cleaning gear oil pans or keeping drinks stocked in the cooler helps a bunch.”

dirt track. Rice eventually stepped out the cockpit but continued field a car carrying No. 2. His driver, Bill Blair, became the first to win in car No. 2 when he topped the June 18, 1950, visit to the Vernon Fairgrounds dirt track in Vernon, New York. Dale Earnhardt, a brash secondgeneration racer, first made a name for himself while driving the No. 2 car owned by Rod Osterlund. Earnhardt won six times and claimed the 1980 championship during his time in car No. 2. Team Penske began using the number when Rusty Wallace, who had carried No. 2 during the formative years of his career, joined the operation. Wallace (37), Kurt Busch (8) and Brad Keselowski (29) have won races in car No. 2 for Team Penske, and Keselowski secured the 2012 Cup Series championship. ■■ 2020 – Brad Keselowski (Getty Images photo)

the sport. How did they manage to let their place in history slip? Or how about the former member of Jeff Gordon’s race team? Or even the driver connected to a very famous reality TV show? Are any of the names new to you? Who did you forget about, and who did you know just by looking at the thumbnail? Be sure to drop your answers in the comment section below this week’s episode from Danny B Talks.

▶▶ What are your expectations for 2020? “As an organization, GMS started working a lot better in 2019. The [No.] 24 [with Brett Moffitt] and even the [No.] 52 [with Stewart Friesen] shared a lot of notes with us. Instead of working with two trucks every week, we’ll be working with four, so that will be nice. We have Bono Manion coming over. We’re getting some new stuff that will help us find speed. We’re learning as much as we can over the offseason.” ▶▶ What can you do to be successful and stand out in 2020? “To stand out in the Truck Series, you need to get six wins, maybe even eight. If you’re in the top five every week and get four or five wins, that’s hard to beat. That’s something everyone would look at.”

A True NASCAR Legend
Glen Wood Built Family Legacy from the Ground Up by Ben white

len Wood, founder of Wood Brothers Racing, opened his highly respected motorsports organization in 1950, two years after NASCAR was officially formed on Feb. 21, 1948. A scary incident during his first year of team ownership threatened to end the dream. While flat towing his racecar home after a race at Morris Speedway near Martinsville, Wood’s Ford was difficult to handle on the road due to a badly bent rear-end housing due to a crash. The wobbling left wheel broke the axle, putting the brake drum on the pavement. When the wheel came out, it jerked the gas neck out of the tank and gas spilled and caught fire. The car, tools, gas cans and equipment burned to the ground in the middle of road on that dark country night. Wood thought it was all over, at least for a week or two. But he and his brother Leonard built a new car and were off racing again before season’s end.

Glen made his first start in NASCAR as a driver in 1953. He recorded four victories in 62 starts, all coming at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston Salem, N.C., between 1960 and 1963. Glen retired from driving in 1964 and in 1965, turning his full attention to team ownership. Over the past 55 years, a virtual “Who’s Who” of American motorsports have wheeled cars for Wood Brothers Racing. When Glen retired in the late 1980s,

Glen passed away at the age of 93 on January 18, 2019. Many of NASCAR’S 50 Greatest Drivers have driven for Wood Brothers Racing. That list includes Curtis Turner, Tiny Lund, Bob Welborn, Dale Jarrett, A.J. Foyt, Glen Wood, Buddy Baker, Marvin Panch, Junior Johnson, Cale Yarborough, Ned Jarrett, Fred Lorenzen, David Pearson, Joe Weatherly, Dan Gurney, Neil Bonnett, Ricky Rudd and Bill Elliott. Wood Brothers racing have been victorious in each of seven decades. “I’m proud to have been with Ford Motor Company for the last 60 years,” Glen said during his induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2012. “We started racing in 1950, and I’d like to thank all my friends and fans from the past 60 some years, and especially from Patrick County.”
