Team Hendrick Returns to Classic Form Dominance In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes a look back at some of the biggest stories coming out of the Auto Club 400 in California this weekend, and once again he was there live on location to catch all the action for himself. The top story coming out of the race was obviously the return to dominance by the once legendary Team Hendrick. While they’ve 0 0 4

struggled the past few years against the Toyotas of Joe Gibbs Racing and the Fords of StewartHaas, Hendrick appears to be making their way back up front in 2020. And speaking of the JGR boys, what happened to them? Are they finally getting a grip on their cars this year? And where does Auto Club land on the patented Groovy Gauge this season? You’ll have to watch the episode to find out!

things we learned at Auto CLub Putting on a Show Bowman the Story of the Stop in California He has been playfully referred to on occasion as “Bowman The Showman.” Alex Bowman certainly lived up to the moniker on Sunday at Auto Club Speedway, spanking the competition on the way to earning his second victory as a NASCAR Cup Series driver. While the Hendrick Motorsports driver left Southern California feeling upbeat about what the rest of the season may hold, other contenders weren’t in such jovial moods. Following are five takeaways from Sunday’s Auto Club 400, which was the second of three races in NASCAR Cup Series’ “West Coast Swing.” by Jared Turner

Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick Are Discouraged
D
espite coming home in the top 10, two drivers who qualified for last year’s Championship 4 left Fontana on Sunday feeling downright discouraged about their performance. Those drivers were Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick, who finished second and ninth, respectively. “We just didn’t have a very good weekend,” Harvick said. “This place wasn’t very good for us last year either. I am just having a hard time getting the car to be balanced all the way through the corner. I think as you look at it, we didn’t have a ninth-place car either; we just had a great day on pit road. Those guys did a phenomenal job on pit road, and that kept us in the game.” Busch, meanwhile, lamented the lack of speed in his No. 18 Toyota compared to Alex Bowman’s race-winning Chevy that led over half the race. “We were slow,” Busch said. “We have a lot of work to do.”

Jimmie Johnson Enjoyed A Nice Final Homecoming
W
hile not the win that he had hoped for, Jimmie Johnson enjoyed a more-than-satisfactory final race at his home track of Auto Club Speedway, which is situated less than two hours down the road from his hometown of El Cajon, California. On a day when Johnson’s No. 48 Chevrolet showcased the kind of speed that it has rarely displayed over the past two-and-a-half seasons, the seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion fought aggressively at or near the front of the field for most of the race and ultimately finished seventh after leading 10 laps. Johnson, though happy to be in contention, still wasn’t altogether satisfied. “I’m a competitor at heart, and I want to win races and be up front and get it all done,” Johnson said. “So, I was pretty disappointed the way it finished and that I ended up seventh. But it’s a good sign of where we’re heading.”

The Rookies Are Works-In-Progress
A
s NASCAR Xfinity Series drivers last year, Cole Custer, Tyler Reddick and Christopher Bell totally punished the competition as they each made the Championship 4 and combined to win an astonishing 21 of 33 races. Reddick ultimately captured his second consecutive title in a thrilling season-ending race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, where he edged out Custer and Bell for the series’ top prize. The first three races of their rookie seasons as NASCAR Cup Series drivers have proven a bit more challenging, however, for the talented trio. Perhaps surprising — or perhaps not — Custer, Reddick and Bell are all still in search of their first top-10 finish. Of the three, Reddick — who sits 23rd in the standings — is highest in points. If there’s any good news to be had for Custer, Reddick and Bell after their first three outings in NASCAR’s top division, it’s that there’s really only one direction to go from here, and that direction is up.

Hendrick Motorsports Has Closed The Gap On Joe Gibbs Racing
A
fter Sunday’s race at Auto Club Speedway, at least one thing is crystal clear: Hendrick Motorsports has closed the competition gap on Joe Gibbs Racing from last season. In the two races since opening the season with a victory in the Daytona 500, JGR driver Denny Hamlin has struggled to find his way to the front. Ditto for teammates Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. and Erik Jones. Meanwhile, Hendrick — which won just four races last year compared to JGR’s 19 victories — has taken it up a notch. Case in point: The dominant performance of Hendrick driver Alex Bowman on Sunday at Fontana. “We’re still slow,” Hamlin said. “Our cars handled okay. If we don’t have a draft, we’re just run over. It’s tough, because I feel like we’re getting beat on throttle time, but we’re also just getting murdered down the straightaways. Just need more horsepower, more downforce and less drag. If we can have all those, we’ll be better.”

Alex Bowman Still Feels Like He Has Something To Prove
n picking up his second career NASCAR Cup Series win on Sunday at Auto Club Speedway, Alex Bowman steamrolled the competition by leading an impressive 110 of 200 laps and taking the checkered flag a whopping 8.904 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Kyle Busch. Bowman, who punched his ticket into the playoffs by virtue of his victory, realizes his work is far from done, however. That’s because he’s in a contract year with Hendrick Motorsports, meaning there’s no guarantee that he will remain in the seat of the No. 88 Hendrick Chevrolet for the 2021 season. Speaking with reporters after Sunday’s win in Fontana, Bowman clearly indicated that he feels like he has something to prove this year. “I’ve had a lot of motivation every week,” he said. “There’s a lot of outside pressure. There’s a lot of pressure from myself. I just want to win races. That’s all there is to it.”

Just Sayin’ ▶
Cheaters, Pay Attention
NASCAR is dropping the proverbial hammer on cheaters this season. If there was ever a question about it, that question was more than answered when Brian Pattie and Trent Owens — the respective crew chiefs of JTG Daugherty Racing drivers Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Ryan Preece — were ejected from Auto Club Speedway Sunday morning for making illegal modifications to their cars. If NASCAR wanted to send a message about where it stood this year on bending the rules, the message was certainly delivered. Jared Turner ▶ Jimmie Johnson Tribute Was Fitting Auto Club Speedway paid a fitting and much deserved tribute on Sunday to hometown hero Jimmie Johnson, who is retiring from the sport at season’s end. Johnson — a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion who hails from nearby El Cajon, California — was honored on the pace lap by being allowed to lead the field while the rest of his competitors drove behind him in a five-wide salute. “There’s nothing like coming home, and this was beyond anything I could have ever imagined,” Johnson said.
■■ Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was ejected from the Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway.

Auto club Rearview: Mar. 2, 2020
▶ Denny Hamlin Would Be Wise To Throttle Back Denny Hamlin didn’t do anything on Sunday to endear himself to any of his competitors. In fact, two of them — teammate Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Larson — were on the receiving end of some aggressive moves by the veteran driver of the No. 11 Toyota. Hamlin, however, was unapologetic when asked after the race about his contact with Truex. Perhaps Hamlin should tone it down a little bit moving forward. It’s simply too early in the season to be making enemies.

Rusty’s excitement level is a little different in the latest episode, although he does have a lot of positivity for the racing. Rusty does talk us through Alex Bowman’s second Cup Series win since last year’s Camping World 400 in Chicago. The fresh faced Bowman has a lot of fans, especially in the online 0 2 2

Are we still in the honeymoon phase from the 2019 changes, or is it more like the lame duck period before the next gen cars arrive next year? Is the racing better, or just slower? Myatt Snider made a shirt depicting his post Vegas interaction with Noah.
▶▶ Some call it petty, some found it hilarious. No matter how you look at it, you’ve got to appreciate Myatt Snider’s sense of humor with his post-race refusal to handshake Noah Gragson following their incident at the Boyd Gaming 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Sure, it may have earned the ire of a long-time NASCAR Cup Series spotter, but Snider made light of a moment in which he stood his ground and followed the Jimmy Spencer School of Thought.

What drivers seemed like one-got wonders but turned out not to be?
▶▶ In all walks of sports, nobody likes being a one-shot wonder. Perhaps that’s what makes drivers like Martin Truex Jr. and Jimmie Johnson so captivating to watch in the NASCAR Cup Series. Combined, both drivers have eight Cup titles, 109 Cup Series race wins, and the satisfaction that they’ve defied expectations from the press and fans with future NASCAR Hall of Fame numbers. However, consider folks like Dale Jarrett and Joey Logano with this conversation as truly successful, dominant racers. 0 2 4

▶▶ As with any sport, competition can draw out extreme emotions from competitors and their families. Of course, fans have polarized reactions when the cameras turn to Kim Burton. Ultimately, if TV networks had cameras in the living rooms of race fans, just imagine how others would react to those reactions.
▶▶ Ah, who doesn’t love rain delays? Alright, so nobody really does, but wondering what to do during these unwelcomed respites is a timeless predicament for anyone at the track. AHayes31 had the most logical suggestion and it’s something that can be forgotten about in today’s digital age of one-on-one interaction.

Drivers who succeeded in Xfinity OR trucks, but not both?
▶▶ Following Harrison Burton’s win at Auto Club Speedway, fans ruminated over racers who succeeded in the NASCAR XFINITY Series or NASCAR Gander RV and Outdoors Trucks Series but not both in their careers. Fans recalled James Buescher, the 2012 Truck champ who struggled in the NASCAR XFINITY Series in 2013.

Why do I find myself suddenly liking Ricky Stenhouse?
▶▶ Whether our readers or race fans appreciate Ricky Stenhouse Jr for his mullet or hard racing style, one thing’s for certain. He’s having a better start in 2020 than he did last year and that change of scenery certainly allowed him to have his hair down at JTG Daugherty Racing.

▶▶ Without a doubt, the “Kyle Busch Bounty” from Kevin Harvick turned a lot of heads and piqued the interest of many teams and drivers. GMS Racing, a perennial frontrunning NASCAR Truck team, hopes to answer the call with Chase Elliott at Atlanta and Kyle Larson at Homestead. Whether you’re at home or watching at these tracks in the coming weeks, it’s going to be a treat to see some exciting competition with the regulars and Cup stars on the track. 0 2 6
Auto club Rearview: Mar. 2, 2020
▶▶ On the flipside, Kyle Busch raises an interesting point with the bounty. In recent years, there’s been some heated dissension with his participation in Truck races. In fact, he won in all five of his Truck starts last year. Now, there’s positive reception with Elliott and Larson entering the races at Atlanta and Homestead. Ultimately, is it a dislike towards Busch due to his domination, or should the stance with Busch apply with other Cup racers competing in Truck races?
▶▶ Jimmie Johnson embraces the love from tracks in his final full-time Cup season. Certainly, Johnson’s helmet from his motorbiking days is not only “Too Hip,” but it’s a kind gesture from his hometrack. Now, if only he could race a No. 48 car in a similar livery later this year.
Blake Shelton @blakeshelton
▶▶ Somehow, Brett Moffitt dug up an old treasure online of his golfing buddy from the 2006 NASCAR Cup Series season. Of course, Hamlin is one of the series’ most physically fit drivers today, but for newer fans, it’s the early 21st century version of seeing Jeff Gordon with a mustache.
Congrats @ClintBowyer on the pole!!!! You are the man!!!!! #nascar ▶▶ It’s no secret that the “Honey Bee” singer certainly enjoys seeing his friend Clint Bowyer succeed on the track. Surely, these two are equals in their fields and there’s a lot of brotherly love. By that, he’s not afraid to make a playful jab at the animated Cup Series veteran. 0 2 7

Experience security and peace of mind with the Honda EG2800i Inverter Generator. It provides quiet power, long run times, and a 30A receptacle for easy connection to a transfer switch. And at only 67 lbs., it’s trusted, portable home backup and DIY power where you need it, when you need it—for your home, and life. Find out more at gen.honda.com.
Please read the owner’s manual before operating your Honda Power Equipment and never use in an enclosed or partially enclosed area where you could be exposed to odorless, poisonous carbon monoxide. Connection of a generator to house power requires a transfer device to avoid possible injury to power company personnel. Consult a qualified electrician. Specifications subject to change without notice. © 2019 American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
