Don’t Touch a Thing on This Package! This week is another very special episode of Out of the Groove, as host and creator Eric Estepp was live on location for all the races in the West Coast Swing. This week he reacts to the FanShield 500 live from the pits at Phoenix. “This was one of the most fun races I can remember watching at Phoenix,” he says, which is certainly saying something for 0 0 4

Phoenix Rearview: Mar. 9, 2020

Phoenix, a typically difficult and single file race experience. But this weekend was filled with action, and Eric takes us through the top finishers for a look at the storylines ahead. And there’s more! Which rookies are showing themselves this year? Where did Phoenix land on the Groovy Gauge? And look out for the cameo from the race winning car in this week’s episode of Out of the Groove.

things we learned at Phoenix A Wild West Coast Finish Logano Outlasts All-Time Phoenix Wins Leader Harvick Two weekends after triumphing in Las Vegas, Joey Logano made it two wins in four weeks to open the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season by holding off Kevin Harvick for the victory on Sunday at Phoenix Raceway. Harvick, the all-time wins leader at Phoenix, had a strong car but was no match for Logano in the final laps as the No. 22 Team Penske Ford sped away. Following are five takeaways from Sunday’s Fan Shield 500, which was the last of three races in the NASCAR Cup Series’ “West Coast Swing.” by Jared Turner

Tyler Reddick Flashed His Enormous Potential

P

rior to a late-race accident that resulted in a disappointing 33rd-place finish at Phoenix, rookie Tyler Reddick ran as high as second and appeared poised to grab his first top-10 finish as a NASCAR Cup Series driver. It was an encouraging performance for the two-time NASCAR Xfinity Series champion, who had struggled in his first three outings as a full-timer in NASCAR’s premier series. “Saturday, we finally got our car better and we went too far,” Reddick said. “We had it pretty much just right it seemed like for most of the race when the traction compound was really good there in the middle of the race. It’s a tough part about it. This (Phoenix) is where we’ll end our year, and if you’re in the championship, this is where you have to win. It’s nice to know we have some speed. But we can most certainly make our car better, too.”

Frustrations Are Mounting For Martin Truex Jr.

F

our races into the 2020 season, Martin Truex Jr. has yet to record a top-10 finish. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver and 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion led 11 laps on Sunday at Phoenix and looked to be headed for a solid outcome before late contact with Aric Almirola resulted in a 32nd-place finish and left Truex steaming. “I just got ran over,” said Truex, whose best finish this year has been a 14th-place result two weekends ago at Auto Club Speedway in California. “He (Almirola) ran into the back of me earlier getting into (Turn) 1. I hung on to it. These restarts are crazy, it’s fanned out. The 48 (Jimmie Johnson) was in front of me. I wasn’t sure if he was going to come up in front of me on the short shoot or not. Then the 10 (Almirola) ran into us. Can’t finish a race. It sucks.”

Reduced-Downforce Aero Package Earned Applause

S

unday’s race marked the debut of a reduced-downforce aero package designed to enhance competition this season on the NASCAR Cup Series’ road courses and shorter oval tracks. The amended aero rules include a significantly smaller spoiler, splitters and other aerodynamic devices aimed to place a greater emphasis on handling and driver input with less stabilizing downforce. Among those pleased with the package was race winner Joey Logano. “Hats off to NASCAR for collaborating with the teams, the track, and ultimately putting on a way better race than what we saw here last year, which is a combination of a lot of things that made it a lot better,” Logano said. “There’s so many unknowns. Those unknowns made it a great race. Even as the teams figured it out throughout the race, it still produced good racing where cars were able to pass, get close to other cars, do things. Just a way better short-track package than what we had last year.”

Chase Elliott Is Feeling Encouraged

C

hase Elliott enjoyed his best overall weekend of 2020 so far, winning the pole and leading 93 of 316 laps on the way to a seventh-place finish at Phoenix. Elliott, however, had hoped for an even better outcome — especially given how much speed he had in his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet for most of the race and in qualifying. Even so, the second-generation driver is optimistic about how such a strong performance could bode for his chances if he returns to Phoenix in the fall as part of the Championship 4. “We will build off of it, for sure,” said Elliott, who is now third in the NASCAR Cup Series standings after earning his second consecutive top-five finish. “Kevin (Harvick) was probably a tick better than us, I thought. But we’ll go to work. It’s just something to build off of. Hopefully, we can come back and we’ll be better.”

5 things we Learned

1

Joey Logano Is Already In Championship Form

W

ith two victories in four races this season, Joey Logano looks like a good bet to return to the Championship 4 following a one-year absence. Logano, the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series champion, won two of the three races in NASCAR’s early-season “West Coast Swing” to both punch a ticket into the playoffs and solidify his standing as a popular pick to capture the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series title. Logano, for his part, is cautiously optimistic about his championship prospects — especially since Phoenix will host the winner-take-all race that will determine that 2020 championship. “It’s early,” the Team Penske driver said. “A lot of things can happen. I feel like Paul (Wolfe, crew chief) and I and the engineers have really have an open line of communication, which has been nice to where, hey, if any of us feel like we’re failing in a department, we’re going to say it. I’m good with that. … I think that’s what’s made us strong so far.”

Just Sayin’

Brad Keselowski is Non-Committal About Future

Asked over the weekend about whether he would be open to the idea of talking with other teams about opportunities for 2021, Brad Keselowski made the somewhat surprising revelation that he is not 100 percent committed to re-signing with Team Penske. Keselowski’s willingness this early in the season to admit that he would consider jumping ship is a pretty telltale sign that he would move on if he felt such a move was in his best interests. And you can bet other teams with open rides are paying attention. Jared Turner ▶ Ryan Blaney Knows Where He Wants To Be The 2020-2021 “Silly Season” figures to be wild, but Ryan Blaney won’t be part of it. Blaney and Team Penske announced over the weekend that Blaney has signed a multi-year contract extension to remain together beyond this season — which was a contract year for the secondgeneration driver. While Blaney undoubtedly would have had opportunities to go elsewhere, kudos to him for locking down his immediate future and being loyal and committed to the organization that gave him his big break in the sport.

■■ Brad Keselowski hinted that he may be open to leaving Team Penske after the season.

0 1 8

Phoenix Rearview: Mar. 9, 2020

▶ Phoenix Is Primed and Ready To Host Championship 4 By virtually all accounts, Sunday’s race at Phoenix was a highly entertaining one, as a new aero package and recent changes made to the 1-mile track allowed drivers to put on a great show defined by lots of passing and close ontrack battles. Look for an even better show in the fall, when NASCAR’s premier series concludes its season in the Valley of the Sun for the first time and four drivers battle straight up for the championship as part of the Championship 4.

Logano versus Harvick in a Championship Preview YouTuber Danny B is back this week with another episode of his news series, Danny B Needs a Minute. This week’s episode has Danny reacting to all the racing this weekend at Phoenix, both Cup as well as the exciting battle we saw Saturday in the ARCA and Xfinity Series. While everyone expected Cup veterans Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski to completely run away with the Xfinity win Saturday night, 0 2 0

it actually came down to a very close battle between Kyle Busch and his teammates Harrison Burton and Brandon Jones - with Jones ultimately taking home the checkered. Danny also runs us through the ARCA results from Friday night, with a surprising winner after all, and fan favorite Hailie Deegan coming out strong in the final point standings. As always there’s more, so check out the latest episode and let Danny B know your thoughts!

Phoenix Still Championship Worthy? This week NASCAR YouTuber Rusty Walrus is back in his car for a quick-fire reaction to the FanShield 500. And with so much action on the track yesterday, Rusty’s got a lot to react to this weekend. The big angle that everyone is looking at, of course, is the fact that Phoenix will be the site of this year’s Championship race at the end of the season. Going into 2020, it was feared that the racing in Phoenix hasn’t 0 2 2

always been the best, with seemingly only one viable lane of grip, and almost no chance of passing. But that’s not what we saw this weekend, and Rusty Walrus is here to relive all the best moments for you, and give his thoughts on how Phoenix is going to do at the end of the year. How does Rusty think the final race will play out? Watch the episode and let him know your thoughts!

Brad Keselowski denies retirement rumors, discusses contract renewal

▶▶ Team Penske dominated the headlines at Phoenix, in a way, with one of its drivers clarifying his long-term future in NASCAR. Firstly, Brad Keselowski dismissed any notion of retirement because being 36 years old apparently means you’re very old. In any event, NASCAR’s Reddit reactors continue to mull over his future in terms of his Cup Series home. Naturally, those pondering about the next chapter for Keselowski will have their concerns answered by the fall, the peak of Silly Season. r/NASCAR . Posted by u/GarageguyEve

Wondering what the Cup cars at the Daytona RC will look like? Wonder no more!

▶▶ Naturally, the news of next year’s Busch Clash at Daytona taking place on Daytona’s famed road course piqued the curiosity of race fans. Yes, it’s a known layout thanks to IMSA’s annual Rolex 24 and an IROC race held in 2006. However, Garageguyeve provides some unique insights on the driving side for this relatively new course for NASCAR next year. Of course, it’s on the iRacing platform, but it’s a pretty good, descriptive visualization of what’ll likely happen next February. 0 2 4

[Daniel Hemric] Been on a downhill spiral for the past 14 months.......

▶▶ Certainly, Daniel Hemric’s a passionate racer who desires nothing more than a pivotal win in NASCAR. After a tough 30th place finish at Phoenix, the normally mildmannered racer expressed frustration. Former Truck Series teammate Austin Theriault believes he can overcome this blip in an otherwise promising season.

r/NASCAR . Posted by u/MMCupSeries19 108

▶▶ Following a productive but not completely clean test session with the Next Gen car at Fontana, William Byron believes the car shouldn’t be hard to drive on its own. However, he acknowledged it’s not a finished product. Still, that didn’t stop fans from debating about the drivability of the cars.

r/NASCAR . Posted by u/acerogers85 19

10 years ago today, Brad Keselowski flys at Atlanta.

▶▶ With Atlanta’s race weekend looming, fans recalled an auspicious moment that occurred a decade ago with Brad Keselowski and Carl Edwards. As a result of their ongoing nasty feud and an ontrack incident at Atlanta, Edwards tangled with Keselowski. To this day, was this truly “boys, have at it” racing?

Shouldn’t the NextGen car be difficult to drive?...

Armani Williams, NASCAR driver with autism, races to win...

▶▶ It’s wonderful seeing folks share their experiences with autism. Moreover, young ARCA racer Armani Williams serves as an inspiration for those with it. Breaking the stigma with autism isn’t easy, but it’s a start seeing Reddit users showing compassion. Talking about it breaks those barriers down one at a time.

▶▶ Undoubtedly, Ryan Blaney’s multiyear extension with Team Penske silenced early Silly Season speculation for the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series roster. Moreover, Blaney’s really turned up the wick with his strong start this year despite the finishes not reflecting his performances. Yes, the No. 12 retains its personable driver, but they also gain a racer with incredible strength during all times. Mature, humble, but determined, Blaney won’t back off that gas pedal for wins and his first Cup title at all. 0 2 6

Phoenix Rearview: Mar. 9, 2020

▶▶ Champions like Jimmie Johnson are competitive because they aren’t resting on their laurels or accolades. Even seven-time champions critique their performances thoroughly and aren’t afraid to share their thoughts to the press and public. Taking to his Twitter, Johnson took ownership for his subpar qualifying effort for the FanShield 500 at Phoenix. Still, his legion of fans expressed belief in a great race day in the desert. Perhaps Johnson will change his angry emoji to the sunglasses-wearing, smiling emoji soon.

▶▶ Yes, Denny Hamlin can be quite the jokester, even if it angers Chip Ganassi, Kyle Larson’s team owner. Following a still unusual, unnecessary push by Hamlin that sent Larson into the frontstretch wall, Hamlin seemed to make amends with his friend at the grocery store. Imagine if they were enemies.

▶▶ And there’s a fight between Dillon Bassett and Brandon Brown’s teams! The tempers, they are flowing, you know they’ve lost. And what a bitter defeat. Honestly, who didn’t hear Ken Squier’s call of the Allison-Yarborough fight from the 1979 Daytona 500 when those two teams “hugged it out” at Phoenix?

▶▶ Sometimes, life can have miraculous moments. It’s remarkable seeing Ryan Newman, continuing with his recovery as he hung out with Ryan Blaney and Corey LaJoie. As evident from Corey LaJoie’s Twitter post, their smiles speak more than a thousand words. May their next meeting be on track in their cars. 0 2 7
