THE PHILADELPHIA EAGLES CONGRATULATE
EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA YOUTH SOCCER ON THEIR 50 TH ANNIVERSARY
WELCOME TO THE EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA YOUTH SOCCER
50TH ANNIVERSARY AWARDS GALA To Our Extended Soccer Family: It’s our pleasure to welcome you this evening to the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer 50th Anniversary Awards Gala. The past two years have been challenging to say the least, but there’s nothing better than being back with family, friends, teammates, and colleagues to celebrate something special to all of us. Soccer has held a special place in all of our lives but perhaps has become even more so in recent times. The game has been, and always will be, a bonding experience. Soccer is something that is always meant to be shared with others. Soccer creates memories. Tonight, we will share old memories and create new ones. Our history and tradition are rivaled by few. Our shared history with the adults, Eastern Pennsylvania Soccer Association, dates us back to our days as a charter member of US Soccer in 1913. Tonight, we celebrate that history. We celebrate it together while honoring our current youth players, youth referees, and other award winners, along with the Eastern Pennsylvania Soccer Association Hall of Fame inductees. Although our organization split from Eastern Pennsylvania Soccer Association to focus on youth soccer 50 years ago, our two paths never really diverged. We maintained connectivity in many ways, particularly as youth players became adult players and adult players became coaches. More than that, we continue to remain united in a common mission: to grow the game and develop lifelong supporters. We look forward to tonight’s program by honoring outstanding achievements in our sport and our community. We congratulate all of our honorees and thank those of you who have supported them in their efforts. Soccer is a shared experience. It takes two teams and a referee to play a game. Thank you to each family, team, club, and other support groups for making soccer so special in eastern Pennsylvania. On behalf of our Board of Directors and our staff, we thank you for sharing your soccer experiences with us over the last 50 years. We are looking forward to sharing more together with this wonderful, growing soccer family in the future.

50 Years occer has far exceeded Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer’s establishment. Though the organization was formally founded in 1972, its dedication to youth sports has coexisted alongside its original parent organization, Football Association of Eastern Pennsylvania and District. Numerous records and publications show that organized soccer was played at a high level throughout Philadelphia and eastern Pennsylvania as early as 1880. The Football Association of Eastern Pennsylvania and District was formally established in 1913 as a charter member of the United States Football Association (U.S.F.A.). Through its well-established leagues, Philadelphia soccer leadership was a significant presence during the creation of the U.S.F.A., which we know today as the US Soccer Federation. Having established a national federation, the U.S.F.A sanctioned competitions of the Football Association of Eastern Pennsylvania and District. The organization, which changed its name to Eastern Pennsylvania Soccer Association in the late 1960s, would quickly become a source of soccer’s growth and development throughout Pennsylvania and have a strong influence across the country.

Several clubs developed national reputations by winning championships at the youth, amateur, and professional levels. Teams from Bethlehem Steel, Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals, and Lighthouse Boys Club were incredibly successful and established Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer’s reputation as a leader throughout the 20th century. Eastern Pennsylvania’s dedication to the youth game dates back to those early days as well. Before structuring Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer as its own independent entity in 1972, youth soccer was originally developed under the jurisdiction of the Football Association of Eastern Pennsylvania
SOCCER HISTORY
Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer is celebrating its Golden Anniversary season with a special 50th-anniversary logo that will be used throughout the year.
and District/Eastern Pennsylvania Soccer Association. Lighthouse Boys Club won their first U19 National Championships in 1938, followed by four more through 1967. Many clubs and leagues sponsored and operated youth programs to teach children the game and develop players for the future. Frequently, many youth leagues grew out of the senior adult leagues, and some still exist today. The history and tradition of the two associations are shared and inseparable. With the continued growth of the youth game through the late 1960s, it became evident that youth soccer would need its own jurisdiction. In 1972, Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer president Werner Fricker and the charter member leagues (Inter County, DELCO, and United Junior’s) founded Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association. It would be one of the first dedicated youth state associations in the country and predates the founding of US Youth Soccer by two years. Mr. Fricker would eventually become President of the United States Soccer Federation in 1984 and would lead the bid to award the 1994 FIFA World Cup to the United States. Today, his legacy lives on as Eastern Pennsylvania U16 State champions are awarded the Werner Fricker Cup. Eastern Pennsylvania has strong roots in developing players, coaches, referees, and administrators. Three eastern Pennsylvanians have served as US Soccer President.
Twenty-three have been inducted into the National Soccer Hall Of Fame. Two have been inducted into the US Youth Soccer Hall of Fame. There are also many players and coaches representing US National Teams and referees who reached the FIFA list. In recent years, several Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer teams have won US Youth Soccer National Championships and have consistently been represented at the regional level of the Olympic Development Program. Though the names are too many to mention, legends like Bahr, McLaughlin, Fricker, Chyzowych, Fleck, Groff, D’Anjolell, and Moran built an incredible foundation for the association of today. Today, Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer remains at the forefront of the game. With nearly 400 clubs and leagues, and consistently registering 120,000 players a year over the last decade, Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer is positioned well for the next generation. Grassroots efforts continue to grow and develop players, coaches, and referees. With a strong vision at the board level, steady leadership from a dedicated professional staff at the state office, and emerging professional leadership at the club level, Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer has been able to become the sixth-largest youth soccer organization in the United States and has established a respected presence internationally. For decades, soccer has always been a passionate sport throughout eastern Pennsylvania. It is for the continued interest of players, coaches, parents, and everyone involved who keep the sport moving ahead. Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer can celebrate its 50th anniversary because of the individuals and teams who make it happen.
