RAGE AGAINST THE

RULES MACHINE Pro Golfers and Celebs Sound Off

BY MIKE DOJC

Just under a year remains before the R&A and USGA, the game’s stewards of equitable competition, are set to implement a new simplified rule book which takes dead aim at some of golf’s most rigid and exacting standards. So we hit up a few celebrities, PGA TOUR Champions and LPGA pros in the field at this week’s third annual Diamond Resorts InvitationalTM to riff on the rules they’d amend. 6

Tom Glavine

Brittany Lang “For me, when you’re just kind of hovering over your ball, you’re not touching your ball, and your ball moves, why are you being penalized for that?” wonders Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Glavine. “You didn’t do anything to cause it. Something like that has always been kind of silly to me,” admits the two-time Cy Young award winner. While Glavine can’t recall getting called for a penalty during a tourney, anxiety over it happening is something he regularly sweats. “I can promise you I’m always a nervous wreck about stuff like that. It’s one of the things I stress over, being caught on a rule that I don’t necessarily know, but I would never think is a problem.” “If you’re doing something where the intent -- and ‘intent’ I think is the key word -- is to stretch the rules or even break the rules then I think a penalty has to be assessed,” pipes Washington Redskins great Mark Rypien. The Super Bowl XXVI MVP was a top ten finisher on the celeb leaderboard at last year’s Diamond Resorts InvitationalTM. If Rypien was Rules Czar, his first order of business would be to give a break to players who hit the ball exactly where they’re supposed to off the tee but end up rolling into mangled turf. “I definitely think hitting a ball into the middle of the fairway into a divot is the one thing you should get a free drop from.” 1989 British Open winner Mark Calcavecchia sympathizes but he worries addressing it will lead to a slippery slope effect. “There are definitely some things that happen out there that don’t seem right. If you hit it right down the middle and Jesper Parnevik is playing in front of you and you end up in his divot…. I mean, you can break an ankle in some of Jesper’s divots.” But “if you change that rule and move balls out of divots you can have a divot from three weeks ago that’s almost filled in, so do you get a drop out of that? That would slow play more than anything.” At the top of U.S. Open winner Brittany Lang’s priorities is allowing golfers to tap down spike marks on the green. “That makes no sense to me. Say you hit a beautiful drive and then a beautiful shot to leave a five-footer and there’s a huge spike mark [in your way] because somebody was lazy and didn’t want to pick their feet up. That’s ridiculous!” Penalty free spike mark and animal mark repair is one of the thirty proposed changes being looked at so Lang may just get lucky next January.

Jeff Sluman

Mark Calcavecchia

Meanwhile Larry Mize, the lone Augusta native to win the Masters, would like to see golf rethink the O.B. penalty. “You can whiff a ball and it’s better than hitting one out of bounds. I just feel like the out of bounds rule can be a little cruel. You hit a really good drive, you hit it just a little off and it could be an inch out of bounds and you got to go back and tee it up and it’s costing you a stroke and distance which is basically two strokes… that’s a harsh penalty.” Jeff Sluman, the 1988 PGA championship winner, is on the same page as Mize regarding the out of the bounds rules, but is reticent to tinker too much with the rules in general. “I think it’s cumbersome when somebody says that this third of an inch-long twig or whatever that had no bearing on the swing was snapped off. That’s insane. But can anybody write a rule that doesn’t have unintended consequences? You can’t cover every situation.” The key is to provide a mechanism so that common sense prevails. “I had an instance two years ago on the last hole of a tournament,” Sluman relates. “I was behind a tree and I had to take the club straight inside and I’m looking and looking and just ticked the tree, and I’m telling you a paper thin piece of bark fell off. The official was there and I looked at him and said, “that’s one isn’t it’ and he said ‘ya.’” Later Sluman goes to sign his card and the official lets him know that actually his bark scrape will result in a two-stroke penalty. “Now obviously I’m not happy finishing with a triple that cost me a significant amount of money,” remembers Sluman. But the story has a happy ending. On his way to the airport, he gets a ring from that same officiator who has since run it up the chain. After determining what happened was clearly accidental and after confirming with Sluman that the bark on club contact didn’t affect his intended swing, the final ruling was no infraction. “So that’s the USGA and R&A being proactive and reasonable and that’s how the rules should be.” (Scratch golf pundit Mike Dojc has slung copy for 19thHoleMag.com, Maxim, ScoreGolf, Esquire.com, Atlanta Magazine, Fatherly, and many other outlets. W

hen it comes to golf there’s one singular sensational challenge that every person who has ever picked up a golf club would love to achieve: a hole-in-one. After all, what golfer - pro, amateur or weekend enthusiast - wouldn’t want to tee it up, swing away and have their ball roll into the cup. One of the best things about acing a hole is that the achievement often reaps the achiever a nifty present. Take for instance, Canadian LPGA star Brooke Henderson, who returns to the Diamond Resorts InvitationalTM benefiting Florida Hospital for Children. After finishing 24th among the pros in last year’s competition. Henderson’s career highlight took place in 2016, when she became the second youngest player in LPGA history (18 years old) to win a major championship (Lydia Ko) at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. That victory featured a hole-in-one on the 152-yard Par-3, 13th hole in her first round. “I’ve been lucky enough to have a few good hole-in-one stories over the years, but the best one and the one that means the most to me was during the first round of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in 2016,” Henderson said. “I didn’t have a hole-in-one as a member on the LPGA yet, and I had a long-standing deal with Brittany (my sister and my caddie) that if I ever made a hole-in-one on the ‘car hole’ during a tournament, that she would get the car.” “We didn’t have a great view but the reaction from the crowd confirmed it,” added Henderson, of how she knew she aced the hole. Brit is still driving (that car) today.” While many hole-in-ones are rewarded with pricey presents, there are times that a different kind of acknowledgement fits the bill as Jeff Sluman, the 1988 PGA Championship champion, is well aware. Sluman has the distinction of being the only player to ace the 212yard fourth hole during the Masters. “I think I’ve had around 11 hole-in-ones, but I would say without question the one that is the easiest to recollect is that I’m the only one in the history of the Masters to make a hole-in-one on the fourth hole,” Sluman said. “At the Masters, if you make an eagle, or have the low round of the day or something like that, they give you a crystal with the date and your name on it. So I’m the only one in the world with this singular trophy of a hole-in-one at (the fourth hole) at Augusta.” It was a 4-iron and as for Sluman’s ball that went in the Cup, he gave it to his mother and it was buried with her when she died. This year’s Diamond Resorts InvitationalTM, will host quite a number

of participants who’ve not only experienced making a hole-in-one, but have done it more than once in their lives. Among the multiple hole-in-one artisans are: PGA TOUR Champions Mark Calcavecchia, Larry Mize, and Sluman; LPGA players Paula Creamer and Brittney Lang; NFL quarterback Mark Rypien; and MLB pitchers Mark Mulder and Tom Glavine. Sometimes a hole-in-one story turns out to be a solo expedition with no one but oneself on the scene to celebrate the moment. That’s how it was for Mulder, a former all-star pitcher and the 2017 Diamond Resorts InvitationalTM defending celebrity champion. “I have three hole-in-ones and two of them are pretty cool considering my first one and my second one I didn’t see either of them go in the hole,” Mulder said. “The first one is embarrassing since I was playing by myself. Ha, Ha, when does that ever happen? I mean seriously, imagine getting your very first hole-in-one and you have no one else there to see it. Kind of embarrassing having to tell people that and have them say, ‘Yeah, sure.’” Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Glavine has special memories of his third hole-in-one. In his mind it was best of the trio because it was a shared family experience. “I didn’t have any hole-in-ones and then in a span of 18 months I had three,” Glavine said. “I was playing with my son (Peyton), who is now a freshman in college, but was then, probably, around 14. When we got near the hole I didn’t see the ball so I said to my son, ‘Hey just take a peek in the hole and see if my ball is in the hole.’ He looked in and said, ‘Oh my God, dad, it’s in. There it is.’ I was taking my joy by seeing his reaction.” This year’s Diamond Invitational will mark the return to the links of LPGA star Paula Creamer, who underwent wrist surgery in September. Creamer, the 2010 U.S. Women’s Open champion who lives in the Orlando area, has four hole-in-ones on her resume. “The first one is always the best one,” Creamer said. “I was 16, I was in Texas, and it was over a ridge and I didn’t even get to see it. Everyone is always excited for their first hole-in-one. It was during a tournament, the U.S. Girls’, and everybody up on the green went crazy. “Not seeing it didn’t matter - a one is a one,” Creamer added. “They’re so rare and you have to be lucky. One of the first questions people ask me is, ‘How many hole-in-ones have you had?’” Although the Diamond Resorts InvitationalTM is only celebrating its third anniversary, it has already established a reputation as an event not to be missed, where the golf is great and the entertainment exceptional. And, who knows, maybe this year some participant might add to the party by striking that perfect shot that finds its way straight into the cup.
