POLE POSITION // 2011

In this third movie installment featuring the Transformers, three NASCAR cars race onto the big screen as fully equipped, high-tech Transformers. The Transformers brand has delivered “More Than Meets the Eye” fun to kids around the world for more than 25 years with action figures that convert from robot to vehicle and back again. As one of the hottest global entertainment properties, the Transformers brand launches a deep

and innovative product line in 2011 that captures the excitement of the movie while introducing new play patterns and experiences to the brand for kids and fans alike. Highlights in 2011 include the new Mechtech and Cyberverse action figure segments The No. 48 Lowe’s race car, known as Autobot Topspin in the movie, and Roadbuster, which is a Transformers version of the No. 88 AMP Energy Chevrolet, are available as separate Mechtech Deluxe Action Figures each equipped with a unique converting Mechtech weapon that is interchangeable with all other core Mechtech figures. Each weapon connects with other weapons for more powerful play. Both figures convert from robot to vehicle and will be available May 16 for approximately $11.99. The third Transformers character representing a NASCAR race car is the No. 42 Chevrolet known as Leadfoot. This Transformers figure is available as part of the Cyberverse line of action figures created in fun, small collectible scales that are easy to convert from robot to vehicle. The Leadfoot figure sports c-clamp hands that can hold weapons and interact with Cyberverse playsets, with more than 20 figures in this line. Leadfoot will be available May 16 for approximately $4.99.

green flag CORN GROWERS PROMOTE THE USE OF AMERICAN ETHANOL With NASCAR’s three national series now using Sunoco Green E15 fuel, the nation’s corn growers have joined forces with the sanctioning body to promote the use of corn-based American Ethanol. The National Corn Growers Association is using its relationship with NASCAR to educate race fans about the role of American farmers in the development of American Ethanol. “We’re greatly excited about this opportunity to help educate NASCAR fans at the race tracks and around the country about the great work of our corn growers in feeding and fueling the world,” said NCGA Chairman Darrin Ihnen, a family farmer from Hurley, S.D. “Ethanol is a growing use for corn, and provides us a domestic, renewable fuel that reduces emissions and creates jobs right here at home” “NASCAR is very proud to welcome as partners the hardworking family farmers all over the United States who grow the corn that will be used in our new Sunoco Green E15 fuel,” said Brian France, chairman and CEO of NASCAR. “We are happy our sport can play a part in creating jobs and fostering energy independence by using a renewable fuel grown and produced in America.” NCGA will work closely with Growth Energy throughout the 2011 NASCAR season to create educational and promotional activities in support of the corn growers.

BEING MISS SPRINT CUP Returning Miss Sprint Cup representatives Paige Duke and Monica Palumbo have been joined by newcomer Kim Coon for the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. Since its inception in 2007, the Miss Sprint Cup program has gained popularity among both race fans and industry insiders. Although their most visible role is representing the Sprint brand in every NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Victory Lane celebration, it’s a small portion of the overall job responsibilities for the Miss Sprint Cup lineup. In addition to making appearances at charity events and NASCAR sponsors’ functions, the representatives serve as the “fans’ friend on the inside,” offering behind-the-scenes access through regular video, photo and text updates to their more than 300,000 social media followers on Twitter, Facebook and the NASCAR.com “Community” page. The Miss Sprint Cup lineup also greets race fans each weekend at the Sprint Experience, the mobile marketing display Sprint brings to every NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event. There they talk with fans about the latest Sprint products and help emcee the weekend’s various contests and giveaways. On the Sprint Experience stage, they also interview the sport’s top drivers and personalities, as well as celebrities from the worlds of music, TV and film.

NASCAR FOUNDATION THANKS RACE FANS

MORE ‘GREEN’ ON THE TRACK IN 2011

In 2010, The NASCAR Foundation contributed more than $3.3 million in charitable support to nonprofit organizations and united more than 250,000 fans in support of children’s charities. “The NASCAR Foundation continues to fulfill – and exceed – the original vision for the organization,” said Betty Jane France, The NASCAR Foundation chairwoman. “We have our fans to thank for that. They have supported the foundation’s efforts from the start, helping us to undertake ambitious – and meaningful – projects that impact thousands of people. We are extremely grateful for that support.” The NASCAR Foundation is dedicated to raising funds and increasing volunteerism through events such as NASCAR Day.

NASCAR FANS ARE SEEING EVEN MORE “green” on the track this season as Ford Motor Co. and ROUSH CleanTech test a pair of environmentally friendly Track Services trucks. Two Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup trucks equipped with the ROUSH CleanTech liquid propane autogas fuel system are being used as part of NASCAR’s fleet of emergency vehicles. “NASCAR is famous for serving as a proving ground for new technology,” said NASCAR team owner Jack Roush. “It is a privilege to show race fans and the sport what we at ROUSH CleanTech know about clean alternative fuels. Propane autogas is already the third most widely used fuel in the world. It’s readily available in the U.S., and we’re ready to test it as a workhorse on the track this season.” Beyond this test, NASCAR has put significant emphasis on conservation with measurable initiatives on and off the track, including switching to Sunoco Green E15 race fuel made with American ethanol; recycling all tires, oils, fluids and batteries used in competition; rolling out the largest bottle-and-can event recycling program in sports; launching the largest tree-planting program in sports to neutralize the carbon produced by NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racing; and attaining LEED certification for new office buildings in Charlotte, N.C., and Daytona Beach, Fla.

MOST POPULAR DRIVER Voting is under way to determine the 2011 NASCAR National Motorsports Press Association Wheaties FUEL Most Popular Driver. Fans can visit WheatiesFuelMostPopularDriver.com and vote once a day for their favorite NASCAR Sprint Cup driver. Voting for the full field of 36 drivers will end on Sept. 10. At that point, the 10 drivers with the most votes will be announced as finalists, and the vote count will reset to zero. Fans will then have 10 weeks to cast their vote once a day. Voting concludes Nov. 20 and the winner will be announced at the NASCAR NMPA Myers Brothers Luncheon in December. 132981

GREAT OPPORTUNITIES REQUIRE GREAT SACRIFICES

I

t has been a little over a month since my big move to Mooresville, N.C., where I would officially become part of Revolution Racing and finally step into the amazing world of NASCAR. There is no doubt things have been great so far, but considering the sudden drastic change in every aspect of my life, I would be lying if I said it hasn’t also been very tough. Not only have I had to get used to a completely new place, totally different from where I have spent the last 22 years, but the climate, the language, and the distance from my family and friends make every day become a little challenge. Then again, knowing this is where I need to be to follow my dream and succeed provides me with the will and strength I need to continue this difficult path in such a demanding sport. I hear the voice of my mom as she would tell me time and time again, “Achieving great things in life requires a lot of sacrifice and hard work, but in the end you will see that the rewards will make your efforts entirely worthwhile.” Still, I can’t complain. This first month with Revolution Racing has been fantastic. The official announcement at the NASCAR Hall of Fame was an incredible experience, giving me the opportunity to be around so many influential people within the world of NASCAR, such as Brian France and Mike Helton, as well as providing a great deal of media exposure. Plus, I had the chance to fly back to Puerto Rico and have my own media tour, making the official announcement of my selection to the program in all the main TV channels, newspapers and radio stations. It was really awesome being able to get people from my home country to know more about NASCAR, Revolution Racing and the whole Drive for Diversity Program. Back in North Carolina, we also had our first test with the cars and everything went perfect. The whole team really came together, giving me plenty of confidence in Revolution Racing as a real contender for wins every single weekend. And you can expect that I too will be working hard and giving everything I have to be the first one to the finish line with the checkered flag in hand; if not me, one of my teammates. I know this is just the beginning, and I will keep putting the time to work at the shop, learn more about the cars, improve my fitness level, and meet new people in the sport. I will remain focused and pay close attention to everything and everyone I get exposed to, because you never know when another big opportunity will knock on your door by simply being there, at the right moment. I can’t thank Revolution Racing, NASCAR and Toyota enough for letting me be one step closer, and for now I will continue learning and making the best of this great opportunity to achieve my goal. We’re heading to the track soon, so be sure to follow me on twitter @BryanORacing, on my Facebook page “Bryan Ortiz Racing” and my website www.bryanortizracing.com.

RYAN NEWMAN LENDS A HAND

HELPING OTHERS THE MARTIN TRUEX JR. FOUNDATION

S

hortly before heading to the season-opening Daytona 500, Martin Truex Jr. was focused on stuffing backpacks as part of his foundation’s support of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina’s Backpack Program. Thanks to Truex, 200 children attending Troutman Elementary in Iredell County, N.C., and their families received nutritious, child-friendly food via the backpacks. The needy children receive the backpacks when other resources, such as school lunches and after-school meals or snacks, are not available. The backpacks include foods such as peanut butter, tuna or chicken, breakfast bars, macaroni and cheese, soup, canned

fruit, raisins and pudding cups. They are collected from the children on Mondays and discreetly distributed to participating children at their school on Fridays and before holidays. School teachers and counselors have said the children often tell them the backpacks provide the only food in the house for the entire weekend. Founded in October 2007, the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation partners with non-profit organizations that are limited in funding and visibility but touch the lives of children stricken by illness, neglect and poverty. Since its inception, the foundation has raised more than a half-million dollars. In addition to its backpack program, the foundation has supported the building of the Martin Truex Pediatric Care Center at Southern Ocean Medical Center in New Jersey. A native of Mayetta, N.J., Truex concentrates on helping needy children in his home state and the one where he now lives – North Carolina. The two-time NASCAR Nationwide Series champion also has touched thousands of lives through his foundation’s Teddy Bear campaign, pajama drives and involvement with the Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center. The foundation, however, doesn’t accept unsolicited proposals and it’s unable to provide funding directly to individuals.

Ryan and Krissie Newman are well-known as advocates of programs that improve the lives of rescue animals, but recently the Ryan Newman Foundation joined the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation in helping 200 needy families in Iredell County, N.C. Newman joined Truex at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina shortly before heading to Daytona for February’s Speedweeks to assist in the backpack program. While Truex’s foundation provided nutritious food for 200 needy children and their families at Troutman Elementary, Newman’s foundation made sure each fourlegged family member was fed as well. While at the food bank, Newman and Truex helped stuff 1,000 backpacks. In addition to educating and encouraging people to spay/neuter their pets and adopt dogs and cats from animal shelters, the Ryan Newman Foundation educates children and adults about the importance of conservation and provides funding through the Rich Vogler Scholarship program to students interested in motorsports careers.

Last fall, the foundation collected and distributed supplies for underprivileged elementary school-aged children. It also hosted a golf tournament at Sea Oaks Country Club in Little Egg Harbor Township, N.J., held a fan event in Manahawkin, N.J., and raised more than $15,000 for the backpack program via a fashion show.

green flag FANS WIN WITH NEW RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN WALMART AND NASCAR

W

almart and NASCAR have formed a relationship designed to give race fans new NASCAR branded merchandise and special savings on race tickets in select races nationwide. The retail program, branded “Race Time,” is the largest retail promotion in NASCAR’s history and was launched in 1,500 Walmart stores prior to the season-opening Daytona 500. The consumer program highlighting the assortment of exclusive NASCAR retail products continues throughout the entire 2011 season with regional activation targeted for 38 NASCAR race market locations. In addition, Walmart customers and NASCAR fans can save money by purchasing a “Walmart Family Track Pack,” discounted ticket packages available exclusively through Walmart.com/NASCAR for select NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races. Ticket packages include four race tickets, four hot dogs, four beverages and one race program for just $99, a savings of approximately $100, while supplies last. Special NASCAR fan events, featuring stock car displays, racing simulators and driver appearances, are also planned at select Walmart stores in several race markets. “When Walmart wants to do business with NASCAR on this kind of level, it sends a strong message,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. “Our fans win by getting quality products for race day at lower prices, and the sport benefits from a program that allows us to explore product development and expansion over the coming years with Walmart.”

BE A PART OF HISTORY Race fans can be a part of history on Saturday night, July 9, when the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series makes its first visit to Kentucky Speedway, the newest member of the Speedway Motorsports, Inc. family of race tracks. The Quaker State 400 concludes a tripleheader weekend that also features a 225-mile NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on Thursday night, July 7, and a 300-mile NASCAR Nationwide Series race on Saturday night, July 8. Kentucky Speedway was founded in 2000 and quickly established a reputation for generating dramatic finishes. Just a short drive from Cincinnati as well as Louisville and Lexington, Ky., the speedway also is easily accessible from major markets such as Dayton, Ohio, Indianapolis and Pittsburgh in addition to Nashville and Knoxville, Tenn. The 1.5-mile track offers excellent views from all grandstand seats in addition to extensive infield and reserved camping options. Race tickets, campsites and Fan Zone infield passes can be reserved at kentuckyspeedway.com and 1-888-652-7223.

LATER DATE FOR 2012 DAYTONA 500

NASCAR SPRINT PIT CREW CHALLENGE SET

The 54th Daytona 500 will be run on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, one week later than the traditional date for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season opener at Daytona International Speedway. “The decision to kick off the NASCAR racing season one week later was made in close partnership with the sanctioning body, our broadcast partners including FOX, community partners and others within the industry,” said Joie Chitwood, president of Daytona international Speedway. The move shortens the NASCAR season by one week as it eliminates the off-weekend typically scheduled in March. Information about the 2012 Daytona 500 is available at daytonainternationalspeedway.com.

The NASCAR Sprint Pit Crew Challenge presented by Craftsman, a fan-friendly, competition featuring the top-24 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series pit crews, is scheduled for Thursday, May 19, at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, N.C. The competition begins at 7 p.m. (EDT) and also will air on SPEED at 9 p.m. that evening. Entering its seventh year, the NASCAR Sprint Pit Crew Challenge is the signature lead-in event to the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race Saturday, May 21, at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The pit crew of the No. 11 FedEx Toyota driven by Denny Hamlin is the defending champion. Visit pitcrewchallenge.com for more information.

WELCOME TO NASCAR TAILGATING THE ULTIMATE RACING EXPERIENCE

J

o Ann Hlavack can’t look at life through the rearview mirror – there is too much stuff in the way. “When we go tailgating, it is packed to the gills,” Hlavack laughed. “You don’t leave an inch of space and, if you have an inch, find something and stick it in there.” So last year Hlavack used the side mirrors, turn signals, hand gestures, blind faith and memory to once again navigate her way to Charlotte Motor Speedway. She really knows the way blindfolded, because she has seemingly been making the trek to the “Mecca” of motorsports before Bruton Smith even imagined it. “We know every spot there,” Hlavack said. They, Jo Ann and her husband Jimmy, got just the spot they wanted last year at Charlotte. They crow-barred out all the essentials – yes, that meant the portable hot tub as well, and headed back home to Charleston, S.C., for more. The race was still more than a week away. “We just wanted to be prepared,” she said. Welcome to NASCAR tailgating, where race fans come early, come in droves, preparation is the better part of valor and valiant efforts are on display everywhere one turns. Even on the side of I-95 outside of Jacksonville, Fla., where Chris Dotson

Fetha Styx Fishing Rods

THE MOST POPULAR OUTDOOR ACTIVITY OF NASCAR fans, fishing, now has an officially licensed line of NASCAR fishing rods featuring drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Danica Patrick and Mark Martin. Fetha Styx Fishing Rods, based in Redmond, Wash., has developed an exceptional line of rods for bass fishing and trout fishing. performed an undercarriage crawl the day after the Daytona 500. Dotson’s 40-foot motor home had wheezed and died. The towing company needed some specs about the undercarriage before it sent a truck. And there was the little matter of the 28-foot car carrier on back on the motor home too. “You should have seen the size of the truck they used to tow it,’’ Dotson said. A full day later, Dotson was still waiting at the Jacksonville South Travel Center for the right alternator. He didn’t mind. He’d just been tailgating at Daytona and this was another chance to savor the memory before getting back to the real world. A real sacrifice would have been breaking down on the way to the race, instead of on the way home. The thing about NASCAR and its legions of fans is that to them no sacrifice is too great when it comes to tailgating. “There are million dollar motor homes right next to people in tents,’’ Hlavack said. “I’ve seen those motor homes pull in right next to a tent and then invite the people in the tent to watch the race from on top of the motor home. “Everybody gets along. We are all there to tailgate,’’ she said. “The race, that is just the cherry on top of the tailgating.’’

or top water, Fetha Styx’s line of NASCAR-licensed rods has an action for you. They come with a split-grip handle and a weighted butt cap to help eliminate casting fatigue. RACE ROCK EGYPT CENTRAL

D

uring the third or fourth flip of his go-kart coming off Turn 3 at Atoka Race Track outside Munford, Tenn., John Falls got the idea that maybe, just maybe, racing wasn’t going to be his future. That is even if there was a future when his kart came to a rest seven rolls later. Luckily, there has been. Falls walked away uninjured, and undeterred. So while he may not be speeding around race tracks anymore, Falls is still laying tracks down and racing up the charts. Falls, after a few more years of weekend racing, took his hands off the steering wheel and wrapped them around a microphone. Now he is the hard-charging lead singer of Egypt Central, an up-and-coming rock band based in Memphis. Six guys go over the wall during a pit stop. Which job would you want? J.F.: “Probably the guy that refuels the car. If I was changing the tires or the jackman or something like that, I could mess it up and hurt the car. But if I did the gas … I could do that and even if I messed it up some, it would still be OK.” You do realize if you mess that up

16

POLE POSITION // 2011

BY CARTER STRICKLAND

you’d be the guy who catches on fire? J.F.: “Yeah, but I would take one for the team. I just don’t want to mess up the car or the driver. I’m a team player. If I catch on fire and everything else is good, the car gets out of the pit. Then it’s OK.” If you could run on any track which would it be? J.F.: “I would have said Daytona, but they had all those wrecks this year. I love watching Bristol because there is so much action. And being from Tennessee, Bristol is my track. But I would probably run Indy. There is just so much history and then to say you ran Indy, that is something that would be amazing.” OK, running a race might not be a reality, but what about singing the national anthem before a race? J.F.: “That would be so much pressure. I mean football games you have a huge crowd, but NASCAR, those crowds are twice the size of a football game. If you aren’t perfect they are going to be on you. You can’t come to the South and mess up the national anthem. That is sacred.” If you could pick a song from Egypt Central’s library to be NASCAR’s

theme song, which would it be? J.F: “That depends on how much language the guys at NASCAR would allow. We have a song on White Rabbit that is coming out now, ‘Kick Ass,’ that would be a great song for NASCAR, or ‘Taking You Down.’ Those two would be good songs.” Who would you pick as a drafting partner? J.F.: “You have to go with Trevor Bayne right now. He was ready to settle for second at Daytona. He is a team player. But I am really a huge Hendrick Motorsports fan, and [Dale Earnhardt] Junior. He will push as much as he gets pushed.” Egypt Central features John Falls, vocals; Joey Chicago, bass; Blake Allison, drums; and Jeff James, guitar. The band’s first single and title track, “White Rabbit,” was released to active rock radio on Feb. 15, debuting at No. 37. The full CD, White Rabbit, will be released nationwide on May 17. Egypt Central hit the road earlier this year with COLD. The band recently launched a revamped website. Check it out at egyptcentral.net.

COPD is slowly robbing as many as 24 million Americans of their ability to breathe—and an estimated half of them don’t even know they have it. It’s a race against time to spread awareness.

TREVOR BAYNE MAKES HISTORY …AND A NEW SUNDAE

T

wenty-year-old Trevor Bayne made history when he won the 53rd Daytona 500. He is the youngest driver to win “The Great American Race,” kicking his childhood hero, Jeff Gordon, out of the top spot. His amazing accomplishment, winning the Daytona 500 in his first attempt, prompted a crazy media tour that took him from Florida to Connecticut, Illinois and California for various appearances. Bayne arrived in San Francisco and headed straight to Ghirardelli Square, with a police escort, to meet fans and media during an Ice Cream Social, complete with a new sundae named in his honor. The Trevor Bayne Sundae, Sundae, Sundae was officially added to the menu at the Ghirardelli Square Ice Cream Parlor and Bayne even tried his hand at creating the

sundae – consisting of one scoop each of rocky road, chocolate chip and chocolate ice cream, plus multiple toppings. Fans, who each received a free sundae, and media gathered in the square’s courtyard for a Q&A session with the young driver. “This has been an incredible stop,” Bayne said. “There are some great NASCAR fans out here in the San Francisco area. I didn’t know I had so many fans! This was great.” Following his time in San Francisco, Bayne headed south to Los Angeles for another free fan event at L.A. Live. He continued his media tour with an appearance

on “The Ellen Degeneres Show.” During his conversation with Ellen, Bayne admitted he doesn’t have a girlfriend, saying, “Well, I didn’t have a Valentine this year, so I’m hoping for better things next year.” To which Degeneres replied, “You will. I think you’ll be OK.” At the end of the interview Degeneres presented Bayne with two gifts – a hula dancer dashboard bobble head and a personalized Ellen car sticker. Bayne also made his late-night talk show debut on “Lopez Tonight,” hosted by comedian George Lopez.

WEDDINGS & ENGAGEMENTS

ROUSH FENWAY RACING LEADS NASCAR BABY BONANZA During the annual NASCAR Sprint Media Tour in Charlotte, N.C., Jack Roush, owner of Roush Fenway Racing, inadvertently announced that Greg Biffle and his wife, Nicole, are expecting their first child. “Matt [Kenseth] has been thinking about he and Katie having a baby,” said Roush. “In fact, Greg, Carl [Edwards] and Matt – all three families are expecting children. I don’t know what they were doing in the late portion of the year, but, anyway, it’s gonna come to fruition in 2011 and they’re great role models for the family spirit that NASCAR wants to be known for.” Biffle, who learned later that same day that the couple is expecting a baby girl, wasn’t planning on having Roush share the news, but there it was, along with a confirmation that Edwards and his wife are expecting their second child. Kenseth’s wife, Katie, gave birth to the couple’s second daughter, Grace Katherine Kenseth, on Feb. 22 at 3:49 a.m. (EST). She weighed in at 7 lbs., 8 oz. Grace joins her big sister, Kaylin, and brother, Ross. Also contributing to the baby bonanza are Scott and Amanda Speed. They’re expecting their first child (that Scott hopes is a boy) in October. Michael Waltrip had two amazing moments to celebrate during February. His new book, In the Blink of an Eye: Dale, Daytona, and the Day that Changed Everything, debuted on the New York Times Bestseller list at No. 11 and he became a grandfather for the first time when oldest daughter Caitlin gave birth to a baby boy, Bryson, on Feb. 22.

NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES DRIVER Regan Smith proposed to his girlfriend of seven years, Megan Mayhew, and she said, “Yes!” Meanwhile, Kelley Earnhardt, oldest daughter of Dale Earnhardt and sister to Dale Earnhardt Jr., married NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour driver L.W. Miller III on Jan. 22 in Mooresville, N.C. Earnhardt Jr. walked his sister down the aisle. Their siblings, Taylor and Kerry, were also part of the wedding party, as were Kelley’s two daughters from her first marriage, Karsyn and Kennedy. Kelley carried a bouquet of pink roses. Attached to it was a photo of her with her late father.

PATRICK AND EDWARDS ENTER THE HALL OF GAME DANICA PATRICK AND CARL Edwards earned honors at Cartoon Network’s inaugural Hall of Game Awards. Patrick earned the She’s Got Game award (Best Female Athlete), beating out skier Lindsey Vonn, golfer Michelle Wie and tennis player Serena Williams. Edwards was a presenter at the show and won the In It To Win It award, which posed the question “Who is the most focused and intimidating player?” Edwards beat basketball’s Amar’e Stoudemire, football player Ray Lewis and baseball pitcher Cliff Lee. All votes were cast online by fans.

11 THINGS TO LOVE

ABOUT THE NASCAR HALL OF FAME

O

nly open since May 2010, the NASCAR Hall of Fame has quickly morphed into a must-see attraction for even the most casual observers of America’s fastest sport. The sprawling entertainment venue in Charlotte, N.C., is unequivocally a NASCAR lover’s dream. Stop in and you won’t be able to leave after just a few minutes. There’s so much to take in that hours will pass and fans will feel like they’ve just arrived. Still young compared with other monuments to the sport, the NASCAR Hall of Fame figures to hold an even more prominent place in NASCAR lore as time passes and more visitors experience all it has to offer.

1

THE HISTORY The NASCAR Hall of Fame is a shrine like no other to the history of the sport. While other areas of the building focus on modern-day NASCAR, the fourth floor is devoted mostly to the sport’s past. “We kind of saved the best for last,” Winston Kelley, executive director of the Hall, said in reference to the building layout.

22

POLE POSITION // 2011

The centerpiece of this floor is Heritage Speedway, which consists of individual galleries telling the story of NASCAR’s past. Among the nearly 1,000 artifacts are Richard Petty’s seven championship rings, a full-size moonshine still built by Junior Johnson, along with a pair of cowboy boots and a pair of dress loafers that belonged to Dale Earnhardt.

BY JARED TURNER // PHOTOS COURTESY OF NASCAR HALL OF FAME

The Honoring Our Legacy Theater, also on the fourth floor, serves as a memorial area where visitors can reflect on late NASCAR heroes. THE FUN FACTOR In addition to artifacts, memorabilia and legendary race cars, the NASCAR Hall of Fame boasts 50 interactive attractions that will thrill visitors of all ages. Want to drive a race simulator? Get behind the wheel and see if you have what it takes to be a NASCAR driver. If you would prefer to sit in front of a screen and race rather than strapping into a vehicle painted like a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car, there are more conventional iRacing simulators that allow guests to pursue their speed passion through an alternative virtual means.

Want to broadcast a race by adding voice commentary to video footage from an old event? You’ll have the chance. Want to tour the inside of a NASCAR team hauler? The No. 48 Lowe’s team rig is here and waiting. THE SIZE Of the 150,000 square feet in the NASCAR Hall of Fame, approximately 40,000 feet are reserved for exhibit space showcasing the history and heritage of NASCAR. The four-story NASCAR Hall of Fame sits on a five-acre site that includes a privately developed 393,000-square-foot, 19-story office building known as the NASCAR Plaza. A 40,000-square-foot ballroom is part of a 102,000-square-foot expansion to the Charlotte Convention Center. The

3

Crown Ballroom has a seating capacity of 2,400 banquet style and more than 4,200 theater style. A 278-seat state-of-the-art theater inside the NASCAR Hall of Fame features an informational film about the history of NASCAR. FAMILY-FRIENDLY ACCESS, AFFORDABILITY The NASCAR Hall of Fame is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week, 362 days a year. Average visits last about three hours. Shoppers certainly won’t be disappointed as the NASCAR Hall of Fame includes a 5,800-square-foot retail store with an array of NASCAR gear and memorabilia ranging from T-shirts and die-casts to videos and books.

Visitors won’t leave hungry, either. There’s a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant and Pit Stop Café on site. Admission is under $20 for all ages, with veterans, senior citizens and children receiving a discount. Children under 5 are admitted free. Ticket combinations, coupon books and group discounts also are available. A ticket upgrade allows fans to make unlimited visits for one year. Baby strollers, cameras and wheelchairs are permitted. THE LOCATION Charlotte was one of three finalists in the running to serve as host city for the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Ultimately, Charlotte got the nod over the other two contenders – Atlanta and Daytona Beach – because, ultimately, it just makes sense for the NASCAR Hall of Fame to be there. Indeed, nearly every major NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team is based within an hour of Charlotte’s downtown area where the NASCAR Hall of Fame resides. Less than a half hour away is Charlotte Motor Speedway, home of two annual points-paying NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races plus the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. The NASCAR Hall of Fame’s location is ideal for fans attending races at CMS and the thousands of NASCAR enthusiasts who call Charlotte home.

GLORY ROAD A banked ramp bearing characteristics of various race tracks, Sunoco Glory Road showcases 18 historic cars and highlights 40 current and historic tracks. It also mimics the various degrees of banking at race tracks, including the impressive 33-degree incline at Talladega Superspeedway. Fans have the opportunity

to walk on the surface and experience the high banks at 14 and 33 degrees. Glory Road, which connects the second and third levels of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, has been captured in numerous photos since the building opened and probably serves as the facility’s most iconic and well-known symbol. Cars on the impossibleto-miss ramp include a famous black No. 3 driven by the late Dale Earnhardt and a rainbow-colored No. 24 Jeff Gordon car. THE INDUCTEES The first class enshrined into the NASCAR Hall of Fame last May represents a who’s who in motorsports. Dale Earnhardt, Bill France Sr., Bill France Jr., Junior Johnson and Richard Petty – arguably five of the most influential people in NASCAR history – each now have a permanent place in the Hall of Honor where fans can watch videos and view pictures dedicated to their accomplishments. A high-level of suspense surrounded the selection of the first five-member class, which obviously couldn’t include all of the sport’s prominent contributors. Three-time champion and NASCAR legend David Pearson will have his day when he’s enshrined with the second five-member class this May. He’ll be joined by Bobby Allison, Ned Jarrett, Bud Moore, and Lee Petty. THE SUPPORT When officials of Charlotte and NASCAR broke ground on the NASCAR Hall of Fame on Jan. 25, 2007, anticipation began building for the grand opening. That day finally came on May 11, 2010 – and some of the most accomplished figures in the sport’s history were there to witness the kick-off ceremonies. It’s safe to say those on hand were impressed by what they saw. “I had no idea it was going to be as magnificent as it is,” said 10-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion team owner Rick Hendrick. “I wanted to see more of it. I wanted to learn more. I wanted to look at all of the interactive areas and to look at the memorabilia. I am just so proud of our city. I’m proud of our sport. But it is way more than I ever dreamed it could be.” THE COMPETITION If you think competition is reserved only for the race track, think again. Visitors to the NASCAR Hall of

Fame compete against each other for the high score of the day in the NASCAR Hall of Fame Challenge. Fans can earn up to 800 points at eight different stations that test skill, knowledge and performance. Contestants can monitor their progress and compare their score with others by clicking their hard card – an all-access pass – at stations with hardcard activities. Finding infractions on pit road and tracking the order of the cars; performing a live pit stop; conducting a pre- or post-race inspection on a car; matching pictures and videos with historic NASCAR events; and playing NASCAR trivia games are just some of the ways to earn points. THE EDUCATION Think you know something about NASCAR? You’ll know a lot more after spending time at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Exhibits provide rare insights into race-car aerodynamics, technical and safety features on the cars and types of crashes that NASCAR’s Research & Development Center reviews to improve safety. You’ll also get to rev up an engine and learn how teams maximize performance, scan car parts and learn how teams check to see if they’re usable for another race, and see how shocks are tested on a dynamometer that simulates conditions at Charlotte Motor Speedway. If that’s not enough, you can set up the tire pressure, shocks and springs for an upcoming race based on driver/crew chief input. By the time you’re done, you’ll feel like a crew chief. THE CARS If you’re a car lover, get ready for this. It’s all but impossible to leave unsatisfied. Automobile buffs have a chance to get a close-up look at 31 meticulously maintained cars spanning seven decades. “One of the cars from the racing community that’s extremely popular is Richie Evans’ modified,” Kelley said, “because it helps validate that we’re a NASCAR Hall of Fame and not a NASCAR Sprint Cup Hall of Fame – and people don’t expect that. People expected to see a Richard Petty car, a Dale Earnhardt car – you’ve got to have it, it’s historic, it’s iconic – but they didn’t necessarily expect Richie Evans’ and Jack Ingram’s cars.”

AT HOME WITH DAVID GILLILAND

S

ix years have passed since David Gilliland, driver of the No. 38 Taco Bell Ford, became a fixture in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The native of Riverside, Calif., is still searching for his first series win, but a third-place finish in the seasonopening Daytona 500 certainly offers hope that the elusive victory could be just around the corner. Counting the two non-points, special events – the Budweiser Shootout and the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race – the NASCAR Sprint Cup season features 38 weekends of racing that take drivers and teams across the country to a variety of race tracks. From January testing until the finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November, it’s a long season. Days off during the week are somewhat sacred for those who endure the busy schedule and Gilliland has invited

NASCAR Pole Position readers to come along as he enjoys a day at his home near Charlotte, N.C. 8:00 a.m. I’m up and start my day with a banana and a bagel for breakfast because I usually like something light. I have a routine of eating my bagel with peanut butter and have a cup of coffee. 9:30 a.m. What I do on off days varies. If we’re talking about a day where it’s still cool out, a lot of times we’ll ride four-wheelers. It’s good exercise and it’s a lot of fun. I really enjoy doing that as much as I can. When it gets hotter, we take the boat out or maybe do some wakeboarding. 11:00 a.m. I might go out and park my boat in the middle of the lake, turn it off and just sit there. I love the peace and quiet, and it’s just relaxing. 12:30 p.m. I like to get an Italian sub sandwich from somewhere because that’s usually my first pick. 2:30 p.m. If it’s a day in the middle of

the week, I like to be home when Todd (10) and Taylor (7) get home from school to see how their day went. I like to be there when they get to the house. 3:00 p.m. I like to play a little catch with Taylor or maybe shoot a little basketball. 4:30 p.m. This is when I get into the “Honey Do” list. The problem is I let it get rather long before I get down to doing it. Every week, my wife, Michelle, will give me a warning and say, “There are two light bulbs out.” Then four, then six. I don’t like changing them because our house has high ceilings and it’s just not my favorite thing to do. 6:00 p.m. That’s about the time Michelle makes dinner. She likes to make chicken. I ask from time to time if we can mix it up with spaghetti or something else and she agrees. But we have chicken prepared different ways most of the time. I need to try and pry her off of that, but that’s what it usually is. 7:30 p.m. After homework, we spend time at night watching movies at home. We will go downstairs and find something good for the kids to watch. We like to have evenings with them as much as possible since we have such a busy race schedule. 9:30 p.m. By now, the kids are in bed and Michelle and I watch some TV, maybe the 10 o’clock news and get to bed ourselves. Then we start another day!

DAVID GILLILAND ON... Finishing so well in the Daytona 500: “It’s a 500-mile race. I don’t think I finished the last three or four restrictor-plate races. We knew we needed to be there at the end. We had a great day.” Goals for the 2011 season: “You can look for Front Row Motorsports, I think, for sure, to be the most improved team from last year. I’m proud of weathering the storm last year and now I have a top-three finish at Daytona, not only for myself, but for [team owner] Bob Jenkins.” Secret to success: “We have to make sure all of our Fords are as good as they can possibly be on every track. [The team] has taken 10 steps forward on the competition side and I’m really proud of that. It really feels good coming to the race track knowing that you have the power to run up front.”

S

ponsorship dollars fuel NASCAR racing and a majority of the cars prominently display a wide variety of corporate logos as they zoom around the track at speeds at or above 180 mph. Teams and companies spend a great deal of time and money, especially in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, designing paint schemes and logo layouts for their race cars. But much like the actual construction of the car, the placement of sponsor logos is tightly controlled by NASCAR and all car designs must be approved by the sanctioning body. These pages include an overview of where sponsor decals can be placed and what type of sponsorship is typically represented in a specific area.

FRONT FENDERS: This area is reserved for series sponsors and NASCAR contingency program sponsors. Each car is required to display the series sponsor decals as well as decals for Goodyear and Sunoco, but participation in the various NASCAR contingency programs is optional, which is why all cars do not carry exactly the same decals on their front fenders. However, in order to collect money from a NASCAR contingency program the appropriate decal must be displayed in its assigned location.

180-MPH BILLBOARD RULES DICTATE THE PLACEMENT OF SPONSOR LOGOS REAR BUMPER: Advertising logos, other than identification for the automobile manufacturer, are not permitted on the rear bumper.

FUEL PORT: New for 2011, all race cars in the three national series will be required to carry the American Ethanol decal that circles the fuel port.

FRONT BUMPER: Advertising logos, other than identification for the automobile manufacturer, is not permitted forward of the hood pins.

28

POLE POSITION // 2011

HOOD: The hood is traditionally reserved for the logo of the car’s primary sponsor while an associate sponsor is sometimes placed on the leading edge of the hood. NASCAR rules allow the hood decal to continue laterally beyond the hood seams to the top of the fenders and longitudinally beyond the rear hood seam to the forward edge of the cowl opening.

TV PANEL: The area above the rear bumper has become known as the TV panel because it is most often visible from an in-car camera shot. Some teams include the TV panel as part of the primary sponsorship package while others sell it to an associate sponsor.

B-POSTS: This is the metal piece that runs from the top of the door to the roof between the front and rear windows. Teams use the B-posts to display the logos of smaller associate sponsors or major product suppliers.

C-POSTS: This is the metal piece that runs from the back of the roof to the top of the rear quarter panel between the rear quarter window and the rear window. Teams use the C-posts to display the logo of a major associate sponsor.

DECK LID: The area covering the trunk between the back edge of the rear window and the spoiler is traditionally sold to an associate sponsor, but it can also be part of the car’s primary sponsorship package.

ROOF: The roof panel of the race car is reserved for the car number and advertising logos are not permitted. The roof number must be solid and at least 36 inches high, reading from the driver’s side. For numbers that contain two numerals there must be a separation of two inches between the first and second numerals.

REAR QUARTER PANELS: This is the area where a majority of the business is done. The top of the rear quarter panel carries the logo of the car’s primary sponsor. Major associate sponsors are traditionally placed on the lower rear quarter panel behind the rear wheel while the logos of smaller associate sponsors are placed in front of the rear wheel.

DOORS: No sponsor identification is allowed on the sides of the race car between the back edge of the air deflector and the B-post. This area is reserved for the car number. Numbers must be solid and at least 21 inches high, excluding borders and silhouettes. A door number must be at least four inches wide and slant no more than 30 degrees. No mirror-foil numbers are permitted. For numbers that contain two numerals there must be a separation of two inches between the first and second numerals.

MISCELLANEOUS: Decals, advertising logos, text or identification of sponsors are not permitted on the windshield, rear window, rear quarter windows or the rear spoiler. All sponsor logos are subject to approval by NASCAR.

Meguiar’s car care and appearance company thrives under third-generation leader Barry Meguiar

Barry Meguiar represents the third generation of Meguiars who have been near fanatical in their quest for creating show car perfect paint finishes. The company was founded in 1901 by Barry’s grandfather, Frank Meguiar Jr., whose original passion was focused on furniture polishes. That focus quickly expanded to cars as Meguiar’s products were found to work equally well on the cars that were beginning to populate America. Following the call to “Go west, young man,” Frank moved his fledgling business from Evansville, Ind., to Pasadena, Calif., in 1913. Little did he know that So Cal was to become the birthplace of what is now known as the Car Hobby. His obsession with creating perfectly clear reflections inspired him to name his company the Mirror Bright Polish Company. It was that distinction that resonated with Car Guys who do not stop polishing their cars until the last imperfection is removed. It was the perfect marriage.

Barry’s dad, Malcolm Meguiar, and his dad’s two brothers, Maurice and Kenneth, carried on the family business following their dad’s passing in 1950. They continued their dad’s interest in selling to the car manufacturers, car dealers, body shops and what we now call “detailers.” The professional market represented 95 percent of Meguiar’s business up until the time Barry graduated from college in 1964. Barry had worked in the family business every summer since grade school and served as the one-man accounting department during his college years. At the time of his graduation, sales had plateaued at $600,000 a year. Having grown up in the Car Guy culture of Southern California, Barry’s personal passion for cool cars and perfect paint finishes marked his life. The luxury of having so many car shows popping up within such a short driving distance from home became a major influence on his weekend activities.

While all of the Meguiar’s sales efforts were directed at the professional marketplace at the time, Barry made an amazing discovery. Based simply on its performance, Meguiar’s No. 7 Sealer and Reseal Glaze had become the product of choice among the builders, painters and owners of the top show cars across the country. Barry saw this as an opportunity to enter the retail market with the Meguiar’s brand. In 1969, he called a family meeting to introduce the idea of creating a line of consumer products aimed specifically at Car Guys who demanded a higher level of performance and were already familiar with the family name. It was a heated discussion as some family members felt that entering the retail market would disparage Meguiar’s reputation as the professional’s product. It was the first of many related decisions that passed with the majority of one vote. At the time, participants in the Car Hobby were all but invisible to mass retailers. Barry

saw this as an opportunity rather than a hindrance. Each sales call became a sales pitch on the growing Car Hobby and the Car Guy’s willingness to pay more for a highperformance car wax. His plea was for the opportunity to get one “facing” of Meguiar’s Cleaner Wax on their shelves. His promise was that he could bring a whole new set of heavy car wax users into their stores. Over time, the strategy worked. It was not easy. Being completely unknown in the mass market and with zero dollars for marketing the brand, Barry hit the road working car shows. The goal was to gain lifetime customers, one Car Guy at a time. During set-up days before the shows opened, he would put shiny spots on cars that would make each car owner say, “wow.” This was followed by giving a free bottle to the car owner with the request that they display a Meguiar’s sign by their car if they liked the results. By the time the show opened, every car had a Meguiar’s sign. For the crowds attending the car shows the message was set. If you want to have a show car perfect paint finish, you need to use Meguiar’s. It’s often said that “necessity is the mother of invention.” At that time, no one could have guessed that this unusual grassroots marketing campaign would become the backbone of what has made Meguiar’s a global brand. Today, Meguiar’s sponsors more than 9,000 car shows domestically and an additional 3,000 shows outside the U.S.

In the early 1990s, the aging population of the Car Hobby created a serious threat to everyone selling products to Car Guys. The youthful attraction of the Car Hobby was not keeping pace with the passing of the old guard. Most car clubs and car shows were beginning to experience declining numbers. The Car Hobby was in desperate need of a new generation of Car Guys. Sensing that need, Barry created “Car Crazy” TV to capture the emotional connections that Car Guys have with their cars and pass them on to the next generation. ive-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson launched his foundation five years ago and has recently added the All-Star Club, which unites donors who share the passion of helping others in need. Last year, the Jimmie Johnson Foundation awarded more than $650,000 to 13 schools across North Carolina, California, and Oklahoma in conjunction with the Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Champions Grant program. Johnson, driver of the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet, and his wife, Chandra, feel there is a tremendous need throughout the country to give children the tools for the best education possible. “Right now, our focus has been on educational grants around the areas where my wife and I grew up as well as where we live in Charlotte,” Johnson said. “We’ve been able to contribute to a lot of great things, but the educational grants are so important and obviously something that out country needs in school districts nationwide. “Funding is so down in our educational system and there are gaps that need to be filled. I wish I could raise hundreds of millions of dollars to help close that gap, but it’s just impossible,” Johnson added. “We feel really good about what we’ve been doing. It means a lot to us to try and help make a difference.”

ony Stewart, driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet, loves organizations that support children in need and the two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion enjoys doing a variety of things to benefit them. The Tony Stewart Foundation awarded just over $730,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations in 21 states last year. Organizations serving children received almost $467,000 while organizations serving endangered or abused animals received $174,000. Almost $80,000 was allocated for backpacks that were provided to specialty camp children in seven states. During July, Stewart made a nice donation of backpacks to children in the Chicago area. “It was neat to see the smiles on those kids’ faces,” Stewart said about participating in the program headed by Office Depot, one of his primary sponsors. “It’s a program that by the end of the back-to-school season will have donated 2.3 million backpacks to kids over the 10 years that this program has been going on. “Seeing these kids that are underprivileged, who don’t have the resources to have nice things for going back to school, to see them have the tools they need and the confidence that they’re just like any of the other kids, that is a pretty neat feeling. It’s a pretty big honor to be a part of that program with Office Depot.”

The Biffles have also supported Spay Day USA, a national campaign of the Humane Society of the United States to promote the life-saving benefits of spaying and neutering. Biffle believes that aggressive spay/neuter projects and progressive legislation in many areas of the Northeast have addressed the pet overpopulation problem. They hope to increase that success with their own personal campaign for animal well-being throughout other parts of the United States in the years to come. “We started the Greg Biffle Foundation to help a lot of animal rescue groups and shelters and we do a tremendous amount of work through that,” said Biffle, driver of the No. 16 3M Ford. “We also help all of the driver’s charities. We are also involved in charity work that NASCAR asks us to do. “It makes us feel good that we are giving a lot of these animals a second chance by helping to build facilities where they can be placed and taken care of until they get adopted out. Since 2004, one million children have benefited by increasing daily activity, confidence and healthy eating habits. “We have the ability to impress people in different ways,” said Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet. “What we can do is create an understanding for our goals and obviously the funding to support the things we believe in. W

hen Virginia native Wanda Miller watched her father and two brothers leave for races at nearby South Boston Speedway during her childhood, she never envisioned a career in motorsports. However, that door opened in 1987 and she immediately found a home that led her to becoming the first female vice president at Speedway Motorsports, Inc. Today, Miller is the president of The Speedway Club at Charlotte Motor Speedway and in 45 race weeks she’s discovered every event has a different personality. “They’re like snowflakes, no two are ever going to be alike,” commented Miller, who’s unable to detail the number of hours she spends at the exquisite club that employs at least 240 people during race weeks. “The challenges are to adapt to the circumstances that you have at that moment and make it work.” A corporate sales manager at a major hotel, Miller joined The Speedway Club, located high above the frontstretch at Charlotte Motor Speedway, in 1987 as its catering director. Several club managers later then CMS President H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler asked her to handle the position

on an interim basis. However, once he saw the club’s financial savings under Miller, the search for a new manager ended and she was offered the position. A couple of years later she became SMI’s first female vice president. Miller was promoted to the club’s president approximately three years ago. During Miller’s tenure The Speedway Club, which employs about 60 people year round, has become more than a state-of-the-art dining facility where members can enjoy on-track activities. It has transitioned into a home for numerous social activities, including weddings, proms and private banquets. “Our wedding business is huge,” Miller noted, “because we’re beautiful enough on the inside for a bride and we’re exciting enough on the outside for a guy.” During the speedway’s inaugural Carolina Christmas in December, more than 4,000 people were served in the restaurant, making it the club’s single largest guest dining program. The club’s three

professionally trained chefs also prepare special culinary delights for such events as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and the annual Father-Daughter Dance. Each race winner is also toasted in the club. Through the years the nation’s changing economic climate has forced The Speedway Club to reinvent itself. “This place is a Harvard Business School education,” said Miller, who was asked by SMI Chairman Bruton Smith to review the

KAREN LEETZOW

DREW PATEY: KEEPING NASCAR GREEN

S

ome kids want to be police officers or astronauts when they grow up, and wind up doing something completely different. Drew Patey always knew what he wanted. He’d go into the maritime business and do something good for the environment. Patey grew up on the water on the Jersey shore. At an early age, he fell in love with surfing and sailboats. In fact, he owned a boat before a bicycle. Coming out of Bryant College in Rhode Island, Patey talked himself into a job with Hobie Cat, known best for its catamaran sailboats. “In the early ’70s, Hobie Cat was the hot deal, and this New Jersey kid was going to work for a California company – now that’s cool,” Patey said. The extroverted, easy-going Patey ran East Coast sales. One of his dealers was Lee Holman from the powerhouse NASCAR team, Holman-Moody, which won championships with David Pearson. Holman turned Patey on to NASCAR, taking him to the 1976 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. “That day, I knew I’d want to get in the

50

race car business,” Patey said. Through Jersey connections, he landed a job with Stavola Brothers Racing. Safety Kleen, an environmental services company, was a sponsor. When the company wanted to expand in NASCAR beyond North Carolina, Patey joined. “Seventeen years later, we now serve 65 race tracks and 400 race teams in NASCAR, IndyCar, drag racing and sports car racing, including Grand Am,” he said. Patey manages the program for Safety Kleen, a key NASCAR environmental partner. He oversees the collection of all oils, automotive waste and fluids used in NASCAR. The used oil goes to a Safety Kleen refinery, where it’s re-refined for oil used by the U.S. Military, Parks and Postal Service. “It’s pretty cool to consider the oil Dale Jr. used at the Daytona 500 could be used in a Humvee in Iraq,” Patey said. “I’m proud to provide a service to the tracks while helping keep the environment clean and green.” ■■ Andrew Giangola is author of the book, The Weekend Starts on Wednesday: True Stories of Remarkable NASCAR Fans, available on the NASCAR.COM Superstore.

BORN IN HAWAII, AND RAISED IN 12 U.S. states (as well as Europe), Karen Leetzow is the prototypical “Army brat.” She gravitated toward the law, and following American University Law School, Leetzow figured she’d become a prosecutor. Then her brother was murdered in a carjacking. Instead of emboldening a crusader for justice and retribution, the tragedy “sucked the wind from my sails,” she said. “After that, I wanted to deal with creative people, not bad guys.” As VP Deputy General Counsel for NASCAR, Leetzow does just that – helping to protect and expand an enterprise “that brings joy and fun to millions of families.” She joined NASCAR in 1999 as an expert in trademark law – an important role during the sport’s rapid global expansion. Today, she oversees the day-to-day workings of the Legal Department, including NASCAR Media, Licensing, Sponsorship and Litigation. Even though Leetzow didn’t have much trial experience, NASCAR’s General Counsel, Gary Crotty, entrusted her to a key role in crucial legal case – an antitrust suit that could have irrevocably changed the sport. “NASCAR believes that as the sanctioning body, it must be able to decide what is in the best interest of the sport, including where to race. The other side suggested races should go to the highest bidder,” she said. Leetzow was on point for the contentious four-year battle, showing how the best partnerships are built through familiarity and trust. She led a team successfully defending the way NASCAR runs its business. “It was a true highlight to work closely with the France family, defending the business their parents and grandparents had built,” Leetzow said. “I was immersed in the history of the sport and got to understand the loyalty to our partner tracks and what Bill France Jr. was thinking when he scheduled the races. “Mr. France was a legendary figure – he had a real sense of humor and was so good to me. When the lawsuit began, my girls were 8, 5 and 2 years old. The Frances let me do my job while also allowing me to be a mom. I’ll always be grateful for that.”

advice DOWNTIME WITH DAVID REUTIMANN

W

hen David Reutimann isn’t at a race track driving his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car, the Michael Waltrip Racing driver relaxes by … working on race cars. Imagine that. Reutimann and his father, “Buzzie,” build and tinker with short-track cars for hours at a time at the younger Reutimann’s personal race shop in Sherrills Ford, N.C. The father and son usually build two cars a year, but seem to spend more time repairing and rebuilding those cars than actually building new ones. It’s not surprising that the Reutimann men enjoy this hobby so much. While David is a two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race winner and a rising star at Michael Waltrip Racing, “Buzzie” is a racing legend. The elder Reutimann has recorded about 1,200 documented short-track victories over a lengthy driving career that continues today. His one NASCAR start came in 1962 at Florida’s Golden Gate Speedway. The Reutimanns have been working on race cars in the same shop for about four years and it’s a way for David to get away from the hustle and bustle of the demanding NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule.

TRAINING WITH JUAN PABLO MONTOYA

MENTAL PREP WITH JAMIE MCMURRAY How do you mentally prepare to race? Is there anything special you do to get your mind ready?

“I tend to joke around and laugh a lot, and when I wake up on race morning, I seem a lot more serious. I didn’t ever realize this until [my wife, Christy] pointed it out, but we normally don’t talk for the hours before the race. We sit down and watch TV or eat, and there’s normally very little conversation, and that works well because Christy’s not a big talker. So probably when I finally shut up, she’s pretty content with that.”

IN LIGHT OF HIS SLENDER WAISTLINE, it’s not surprising Juan Pablo Montoya is keen on physical fitness. Montoya, however, does more than run-of-the-mill cardiovascular routines. Now a resident of Miami, the native of Bogota, Colombia, takes advantage of the balmy South Florida climate to pursue one of his favorite pastimes – water sports. “I do windsurf, a lot of activities all the time and I train as well,” said the 35-year-old who competes in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing. “I think the hardest thing is the races are very long, so I think it’s more mental than anything else,” Montoya explained. The 2000 Indianapolis 500 winner and 2007 NASCAR Sprint Cup rookie of the year is succinct in describing the specific nature of his workout regimen. “I’ve just got a guy at home and I train when I’m there,” Montoya said. “Some days you try to run for 25 minutes and some days you run for 40 or whatever, so it just varies,” he said. “I think it’s a lot easier to run outside than it is on a treadmill.”

FUELING UP WITH SAM HORNISH JR.

Breakfast

“MOST OF THE TIME ON race-day mornings, I like some oatmeal with some berries or whatever in it,” says the three-time IndyCar Series champion. There are also certain kinds of foods Hornish abstains from before a race. “I don’t ever have anything greasy on race-day morning,” he adds.

Lunch

HORNISH’S FAVORITE MEAL is chicken and pasta with a marinara sauce. “We got kind of on a kick this year. We were doing chicken parmesan and warming it up from the night before and it seemed like we always ran pretty good whenever we did that,” he says. “You kind of have to go, ‘I’m not superstitious but I’m going to do whatever I can do.’”

Snack

HORNISH HAS BEEN KNOWN to eat power bars inside the race car – especially during particularly lengthy races such as the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The driver’s preferred snack choice, although never consumed in the race car, is fruit – mostly in the form of oranges and bananas.

Dinner

“MY WIFE ALWAYS MAKES me some kind of sandwich to eat on the way to the airport,” Hornish says of his post-race dinner ritual. “I’ve also got to have my Diet Coke after I get out of the car. It’s like the last four or five days all I’ve been drinking is water. So I’ve got to have something different.”

SPRING CLEANING... FOR YOUR CAR Detailing Tips to Freshen Up Your Car – Inside and Out

dullness, scratches, swirls, etc. then select the appropriate product to remedy the defect.

S

p r i n g i s i n t h e a i r, a t i m e w h e n w e t u r n o u r a t t e n t i o n to cleaning... our cars! A good spring cleaning doesn’t need to be a complex process. So to help, the car care experts at Meguiar’s® will share with you some detailing tips that will make your car gleam. Better still, all of these techniques can be done in your driveway with just a few simple tools and a handful of car care products.

Wash

Interior

Use a wash specifically formulated for washing cars. Dishwashing soaps & detergents strip wax and dry out paint, reducing shine and promoting oxidation. What you use to wash and dry is important, too. Household sponges, brushes or old bath towels are typically too abrasive for your car’s finish and actually scratch the surface. These scratches (‘towel marks’ or ‘swirls’) dramatically reduce the glossiness and clarity of your car’s paint, making it look old and faded.

Vacuum carpets, floor mats and seats. Use a carpet & upholstery cleaner on stubborn stains.

For best results, Meguiar’s® recommends using a premium quality microfiber wash mitt & towels for drying, wax removal & detailing. Alternately, premium 100% cotton terrycloth towels can be used as a second choice.

Wheels/Tires Remove brake dust and road grime by using a dedicated wheel cleaning product (be sure to read the label to confirm that the cleaner is appropriate for your type of wheels and follow directions). Set off your freshly cleaned wh e e l s b y a p pl y i ng a t i r e d r e s s i n g (available in spray, aerosol or gel) for a glossy, like new appearance that will set your car apart.

C l e a n and dust the dash using an interior detailer like Meguiar’s ® Quik Interior Detailer, which has been specially

formulated to be safe on instrument panels and navigation screens. Protect vinyl/plastic dash and interior pieces from the harmful effects of the sun with a protectant that features advanced UV protection. L e a t h e r. U s e a dedi cated l eather product to clean, condition and nourish leather surfaces (note that Meguiar’s ® leather products also excel on leather furniture, too!)

Polish (optional) Polishing is an optional step to maximize gloss, especially on dark colored cars.

Wax/Protect Add a brilliant shine and long-lasting protection with a premium wax. Av a i l a b l e i n e a s y - t o - u s e s p r a y s , liquids or traditional pastes, premium waxes maximize glossy reflections AND protection of painted surfaces. A final tip is to revitalize black plastic/ vinyl trim with Meguiar ’s ® Ultimate Protectant which dramatically improves the appearance while providing lasting protection.

Maintain Now that your car looks phenomenal, keep it looking that way in-between regular washing and waxing by touching up with a detailer product that has been specially formulated to safely remove dust without scratching the surface, and also boost your wax’s performance. Follow these tips using quality products, and your car will not only be clean but will look newer, too!

If you choose to stop here, you’ll have a properly cleaned car. If you want your nice clean car to shine like a diamond though, then finish with these steps:

DID YOU KNOW? STRAIGHT TO THE POINT NASCAR SIMPLIFIES POINTS SYSTEM, REVISES CHASE QUALIFYING FORMAT

N

ASCAR has utilized several points systems to crown its champions through the years and most of them have been pretty complicated. One used a sliding scale that was determined by the total prize money for a specific race while another was built around a complex formula based on the number of laps completed and the size of the track. And those were in the days before computers or even calculators. Now, after using the same basic points system since 1975, NASCAR has changed to a much simpler formula for each of its national series. “Many of our most loyal fans don’t fully understand the points system we have used to date,” NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France said while introducing the new system. “So, we are simplifying the points system to one that is much easier to understand. Conceptually, it is comparable to our previous system, but it is easier to follow.” The new system awards points in onepoint increments. As an example, in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, race winners earn 43 points, plus three bonus points for the victory. Drivers can also earn an extra point for leading a lap and another for leading the most laps, bringing the total possible points to 48.

All other drivers in a finishing order are separated by one-point increments. A second-place finisher earns 42 points, a thirdplace driver 41 points, and so on. A last-place finisher – 43rd place – earns one point. In the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, the last-place finisher receives eight points, to account for that series’ 36-driver field. Kevin Harvick is among those with an example of how the old system often confused race fans.

the right direction. The American public is all about keeping it simple and the new points system accomplishes that goal.” NASCAR officials have also adjusted how drivers qualify for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. The top 10 in points following Race No. 26 – the “cutoff” race – continue to earn Chase berths, while the final two spots in the 12man field are now determined by race wins. Positions 11 and 12 are “wild card” posi-

“I got done with the season last year, and I got a text from [New York Yankees manager] Joe Girardi. He says, ‘Hey, man, great year, good job; but I don’t understand how you can have the best year and not win. I don’t understand your points system,” Harvick said. “If you look at the new points system, I think it’s easy to understand. It’s the casual fan that we need to recapture by making it exciting and easily understandable.” “As an industry, it is vital that we continually create a product full of drama and excitement,” said Jerry Gappens, executive vice president and general manager of New Hampshire Motor Speedway. “The changes NASCAR announced are certainly a step in

tions and will go to non-top-10-ranked drivers with the most wins, as long as they’re ranked in the top 20 in points. The top-10 Chase drivers will continue to be seeded based on wins during the first 26 races, with each win worth three bonus points. The wild card drivers will not receive bonus points for wins and will be seeded 11th and 12th, respectively. It’s a move aimed toward rewarding winning and consistency during the regular season. “The fans tell us that winning matters the most with them, so we’re combining the tradition of consistency in our sport with the excitement that comes along with winning,” France said.
