Kyle Larson to the No. 5 for Hendrick In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes a look at the climactic storyline from all of NASCAR 2020 silly season. That’s right, this week we finally got an answer on exactly where Kyle Larson would be ending up next year. Turns out the rumor mill was right all along, he’ll be taking over the No. 5 for Hendrick Motorsports next year. But that’s not the end of the story. Eric takes us through all the context of this 0 0 4
decision by Hendrick, and of course by NASCAR as well. How will Larson perform next year with a new team, and a team that’s quite a step up from his last when it comes to equipment and resources. Some questions do remain, like what exactly Kyle Larson’s relationship will be with manufacturer Chevy, and a list of sponsors to appear on his car haven’t been announced yet. Check out this week’s episode, Eric has the full story!

Live On Location at Texas Motor Speedway In this special episode of Out of the Groove, Eric takes a trip to Texas Motor Speedway to catch the truck race (yes, THAT one!) and the first segment of the Cup race (which was sadly delayed due to rain). Plus, thanks to the generous support of NASCAR, Eric was also able to catch all of the action from a very special vantage point. So how was Texas, a track that Eric personally has so much history at? What was it like during the pandemic? Take a trip around 0 0 6
the facilities with Eric as he explores all of the precautions and procedures NASCAR is taking to keep fans safe, along with the fun and exciting activities that are still available even during the pandemic. If you’ve never been to a NASCAR race, or are curious what it’s like during the pandemic, check out this special onlocation episode of Out of the Groove for a comprehensive tour, and of course, an exciting time at the race track!

Storylines of the Week W
hen NASCAR Cup Series drivers arrived at Texas Motor Speedway, their plan was to be back home in Charlotte, North Carolina no later than Sunday night and turn their focus to this weekend’s Round of 8 elimination race at Martinsville Speedway. Mother Nature had other plans, however, leaving drivers and teams stuck in Texas for four days as persistent rain delayed on-track activities. While things remained quiet on the track until Wednesday night, it’s been a busy news week for the sport, nevertheless. Following are the five biggest storylines. by Jared turner

A Quick Turnaround for Everyone
W
ith the NASCAR Cup Series race at Texas requiring multiple days to complete due to lingering rain showers, teams and TV crews will need to scramble to have everything ready to go for Sunday’s Cup race at Martinsville Speedway, which is set to host the all-important final event in the Round of 8. Thankfully, with NASCAR’s premier division moving to one-day shows since returning to action following the sabbatical necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s possible for NASCAR’s traveling circus to leave Texas as late as Thursday and still arrive in Martinsville with time to spare. However, if the Martinsville race weekend began on Friday as it customarily has over many years, racing in Texas so late in the week wouldn’t be an option. But even with the added flexibility that comes with a one-day event, teams and TV crews, especially, aren’t going to have any time to waste as they head east to Virginia and the paperclip-shaped Martinsville track.

More Buzz Surrounding ‘23XI Racing’
W
ith excitement already building since last month’s announcement that Denny Hamlin and NBA legend Michael Jordan would join forces in launching a brand new NASCAR Cup Series team in 2021 with Bubba Wallace as their driver, the anticipation reached a fever pitch heading into the Texas race weekend when the team revealed on October 22 that its official name will be 23XI Racing — pronounced twenty-three eleven — and that Wallace’s car number will be 23, the same number that Jordan wore for most of his playing career and the number he wore for all six of his NBA championships as a member of the Chicago Bulls. “Michael and I have a shared vision for this team, so it’s exciting to see it reflected in the team name and on the race car with the iconic number 23 that Michael made famous,” Hamlin said. The team also has launched an impressivelooking website, 23XIracing.com, and already created a social media presence on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Kevin Harvick’s Recovery from an Early-Race Miscue
C
oming into Texas, Kevin Harvick held a semi-comfortable 41-point advantage in the standings over fellow playoff driver Chase Elliott, who was the first driver on the wrong side of the bubble for advancing to the Championship 4. However, by the time the race at Texas was redflagged for rain just 52 laps in, Harvick found himself in a significantly more precarious position after slapping the wall while leading on a wet track and falling all the way to 36th and one lap down in the running order. Although Harvick was still ahead of the cutline when the race finally resumed on Wednesday night, his margin was razor-thin. But thankfully for the Stewart-Haas Racing driver, he recovered to finish 16th and actually add a point to his advantage over the first driver on the wrong side of the cutline. Still, Harvick’s early-race miscue at Texas was enough to remind everyone that anything can happen in this sport.

The Rain that Refused to go Away
T
hey say everything’s bigger in Texas. Apparently, that includes rain events. Beginning Sunday evening and continuing through Wednesday afternoon, wet weather besieged Texas Motor Speedway — keeping the NASCAR Cup Series race at a grinding halt after just 52 of 334 laps. Attempts to resume the show on both Monday and Tuesday proved worthless, as speedway and NASCAR officials were unable to get the 1.5-mile track race-ready despite ongoing attempts to dry the drenched surface. While the precipitation tapered off at various points on both days, any letup wasn’t prolonged enough to dry the track enough for drivers to safely compete. So, the waiting game continued until Wednesday night, when the race resumed and was finally completed in its entirety, and reigning series champion Kyle Busch went to Victory Lane for the first time in 2020 despite no longer being one of the drivers in contention for the title.

The Marriage of Kyle Larson and Hendrick Motorsports
T
he worst-kept secret in NASCAR in recent history became official on Wednesday: Kyle Larson will drive for Hendrick Motorsports in 2021, completing the organization’s fourdriver roster. Larson, who was recently reinstated by NASCAR after undergoing extensive racial sensitivity training following his use of a racial slur in April, will drive Hendrick’s flagship No. 5 car that last competed in 2017. The No. 88 car, which Hendrick has fielded since 2008, will no longer compete. Larson will be paired with crew chief Cliff Daniels, now the crew chief on the No. 48 team, which will effectively become the No. 5 team in 2021. Larson, who lost his ride at Chip Ganassi Racing during NASCAR’s hiatus for the COVID-19 pandemic, couldn’t be any more thankful for a second chance — with one of NASCAR’s premier teams, no less. “I can’t put into words how grateful I am for the commitment, the faith and the confidence from him and everyone at Hendrick Motorsports,” he said.

▶ NASCAR Needs to add more saturday races Just imagine if the NASCAR Cup Series race, originally scheduled for Sunday
evening at Texas Motor Speedway, had been run earlier in the day or, better yet, on Saturday. Yep, you guessed it: Drivers and teams wouldn’t have been stuck in Texas until Wednesday night, waiting out a wet-weather pattern that didn’t want to cooperate despite nothing less than valiant track-drying efforts on the part of safety personnel. Look, I’m no expert on scheduling, and I know NASCAR has a lot to consider when it comes to drawing up a calendar each year, but why not add more Saturday races to future schedules? Fans love them and, more importantly, they create a one-day buffer that would make situations like the one we’ve had this week in Texas far less likely.

▶ NASCAR screwed up and kevin harvick paid the price It’s kind of hard to pity a guy who has won a NASCAR Cup Series-high nine races in
2020, but anyone who didn’t feel at least a little sorry for Kevin Harvick on Sunday at Texas is pretty hard-hearted. After all, it was NOT Harvick’s fault that he scraped the wall, suffered damage and dropped all the way to 36th in the running order after previously leading the race. No, this was NASCAR’s fault for letting its drivers continue to make laps at full speed despite the fact that rain was clearly falling. Harvick ran over a wet spot and, as a result, was in jeopardy of taking a major hit in the standings — although he ultimately recovered nicely and avoided such a hit. NASCAR should apologize to Harvick, own up to its mistake and never again knowingly let drivers race on a wet oval. 0 2 2

▶ someone should hire deserving ty dillon Among the more notable drivers still looking for work in 2021 is Ty Dillon,
whose Germain Racing team is folding at season’s end. Dillon’s bigger problem, however, is that with Wednesday’s announcement that Kyle Larson will drive for Hendrick Motorsports next year, there are no more quality rides available. Although it might be natural to assume Dillon could continue his Cup career at Richard Childress Racing, the organization owned by his legendary grandfather, it’s not that simple. RCR would need a major primary sponsor to step up in order to field a third team for Dillon. All I know is this: Dillon is a talented driver and even better person. Fingers crossed he somehow still lands a decent opportunity. 0 2 3

Ricky Craven Nabs First Cup Win at Martinsville In 2001 by Rob Tiongson

fter 173 starts in the NASCAR Cup Series, Ricky Craven had to wonder when his time to shine would arrive. Perhaps in fitting fashion, on Monday, October 15th, 2001 at Martinsville Speedway, the 2001 Old Dominion 500 would play a role in incredible fashion. In one of the most emotional races in what was an already moving season in more ways for NASCAR, a 35-year-old Newburgh, Maine native seemed up to the task, even in a better late than never race. Although the 2001 championship was Jeff Gordon’s to lose, on this day, while he would be a factor for most of the race, it was an event that belonged to the grittier drivers of the time. After a stormy Sunday postponed this fall short track special to a Monday afternoon, the drivers forgot about their Sunday etiquette and 0 2 4

raced like most folks trying to get through a Monday morning traffic jam. Early on, it was clear Craven had a strong No. 32 Tide Ford Taurus, a team fielded by Cal Wells, a car owner who made a name for himself in the IndyCar Series. Snatching the lead from Bodine on Lap 10, Craven led the way for 47 laps before Matt Kenseth, Jeff Gordon, Mike Wallace, and Elliott Sadler enjoyed their stints at the front of the field. Along the way, Robert Pressley had an incident near Turn 2 on Lap 55 while Rich Bickle spun near Turn 2 just 12 laps later. Following Jerry Nadeau’s spin in Turn 3 on Lap 74, the first multi car accident of the day transpired on Lap 87 when John Andretti, Jason Leffler, and Jeff Burton tangled in Turn 3. A six lap caution kicking off on Lap 125 for oil on the track would be followed up for Bickle on Lap 170 when he crashed in Turn 4. Trouble would find Rusty Wallace on Lap 207 when he spun in the vicinity of Turn 3 while Earnhardt and Blaney had their separate issues in Turn 2 respectively on Laps 278 and 285. More chaos would ensue on Lap 354 when Robby Gordon went for a spin cycle on the backstretch before Earnhardt went for a loopty loop on Lap 383. Apparently, Dead or Alive’s hit song from 1984 was appropriate for this race at Martinsville when Joe Nemechek, Kenny Wallace, and Jerry Nadeau

likely thought, “You spin me right round” in Turn 2 on Lap 447. Mark Martin, Kurt Busch, Ward Burton, Dale Jarrett, Casey Atwood, Bobby Hamilton, and Johnny Benson, Jr. made some noise at the front of the field before Kevin Harvick found himself in the lead on Lap 453. Harvick, who made the somewhat short trip from Memphis, Tenn. to Martinsville, Va. following his NASCAR XFINITY Series race on Sunday, was just 48 laps away from his third victory of the 2001 season. As the Old Dominion 500 was winding down, Harvick’s car was getting tight with 32 to go. Staying out to gain track position with an aggressive call by crew chief Kevin Hamlin, in the spirit of Manny Ramirez, Harvick could say that Martinsville was just being Martinsville on Lap 473. Hamilton used the old chrome horn on Harvick in Turn 2, sending Harvick on the outside line while Craven took advantage of both drivers’ little squabble, going three wide on the backstretch and into Turn 3. Clearly upset by Hamilton’s bump in Turn 2, Harvick checked up and dished out a Klingon like tap to Hamilton’s car, spinning the 1998 Martinsville race winner out of contention. Needless to say,

Memory Lane NASCAR, during these times, was not all about “Boys, have at it” type racing. Harvick might’ve believed in the Code of Hammurabi but it didn’t win him any favorable impressions with the officials. Served with a one lap penalty for rough driving, Harvick was upset and radioed to his crew that Hamilton hit him first and that it was fair play with the right for him to retaliate. By all means, Harvick was frustrated with the events of Lap 473 but it was just one of the many steps into the mature, confident racer that would emerge kicking off in 2014. As for Craven, his brave move on Lap 473 netted him the lead. However, he had to succeed in the Buddy Baker School of Success in terms of having one eye on the mirror and one eye on where he was going. On the race’s final restart on Lap 484, Craven had to stave off a determined and hungry Dale Jarrett, the spring race winner at Martinsville that year. Although Jarrett had plenty of chances to apply the bump and run on Craven, the 1999 Cup Series champion was a gentleman on this day as he 0 2 8
wanted to earn the victory as cleanly as possible. A clean victory certainly happened at Martinsville but it was Craven and his Tide Ride car that emerged victorious in one of the most emotional Victory Lane celebrations in recent memory. Needless to say, Craven earned his maiden Cup win and he worked for it not only throughout his career but in this 500-lap classic. On the final lap, Jarrett pulled alongside Craven and the two drivers traded paint on the backstretch. Craven masterfully held off Jarrett, trusting his rival along the way. “I used him (DJ) up little bit, you know? I knew he expected me to. My first win...and I found comfort with Dale Jarrett in my mirror and I just prayed the last 20 laps that I had the strength to keep going because we took two tires and it was getting away from me. It was the hardest 20 laps I’ve ever driven in my life. But I want to tell you - I owe everything to this team. First, Cal Wells for giving me the chance to drive this car. I’d be remiss if I didn’t

recognize my wife, Riley and Everett. There were two years where we were floating around Moosehead Lake and gave little chance of ever getting back to the Cup. And my wife said to me one day, she said, ‘Tough times don’t last. Tough people do.’ And I found inspiration in that. I just won a Cup race, that’s awesome.” Remaining as calm as possible, Craven reflected on the arduous journey to become a NASCAR Cup Series winner. “I knew when I got this opportunity, it was what I needed to get the win and get back on track,” he said. “We were so thankful that Larry Hedrick gave me my introduction into Cup racing. I got the opportunity with Rick Hendrick and I thank him for that because I really enjoyed it. Then, things didn’t go the way I’d hope and I got beat up. And wow, what a perfect story! Here’s the good news - I’m only 35 years old. Two years ago, that looked old. Right now, it’s looking pretty young.” Classy in defeat, Jarrett understood Craven’s hard racing upon reflection when he 0 3 0
crossed the stripe in second. “Well, it was exciting,” he observed. “Congratulations, first of all, to Ricky Craven and that entire team. He did a great job and he did exactly what he was supposed to do. I mean, I had four tires and he only had two. And I could see his car was really loose up off. I could’ve pressed the issue down on the bottom. I could tell he was really protecting that but I’d have to hit him. I didn’t want that to be the way. As for the two combatants who tangled on Lap 473, as they’d say, there’s two sides to every story. Harvick, who wound up placing 22nd after leading 20 laps, quoted Hammurabi’s Code in terms of his role with the incident. “Well, I mean, we’re at Martinsville and there’s not a whole lot of room. And we gambled and we stayed on the bottom of the racetrack and did what we thought was right. Kept it glued to the curb as much as we could and tried to get good runs up off the corner. Bobby Hamilton got into us a little bit and we just kind of returned the favor. I guess that’s not what they wanted to see. We’ll just live and breathe with their calls and those kinds of calls aren’t what fill these grandstands though. “I’ve watched several guys go out there today and spin people out. I think it might have to do something with the rookie stripe on the back of the car. I didn’t feel it was right that Bobby Hamilton knocked us out of the lead the way he did. An eye for an eye, and that’s the way we race.” On the other hand, Hamilton, who placed 13th after leading 92 laps, voiced his displeasure with the young buck while

Memory Lane
evaluating what separated that racer from the late Dale Earnhardt, Sr. “I mean, I was running real close to him and I wasn’t doing anything different,” Hamilton said. “All of a sudden, his momentum broke and I accidentally hit him. Hell, I could’ve hit him three laps before that. I hadn’t been driving like that all day. And I knew that he had four old tires and we had new tires. I was sort of biding my time. And I even slowed down and it let the 32 get up under me. And he ran into me and spun us around. “That’s Martinsville racing. Yes, NASCAR did see what happened. They saw his momentum slow down and that’s why they’ve done what they did. The problem you got here is you’ve got a young kid with a lot of talent trying to fill 0 3 2
Dale Earnhardt’s shoes and thinks he is Dale Earnhardt. And he wouldn’t make a scab on Dale Earnhardt’s butt right now. He just needs a little more time.” Ultimately, Craven would find Victory Lane one more time in his Cup career in one of the most thrilling races in NASCAR history at Darlington Raceway in 2003 while Jarrett tallied his last four Cup wins of his career from 2002 to ‘05. By all means, on this edition of “Memory Lane,” while it might’ve been one of the angriest Martinsville races in recent times, it was ironically won by a driver who proved to be one of the nicest ones around in NASCAR’s circles.

Anthony Alfredo Scores An Emotional Third Place Finish at Texas by Rob Tiongson
I
f there’s one thing that Anthony Alfredo’s showcased in his 19-start NASCAR XFINITY Series campaign, it’s that he was like Electric Light Orchestra’s 1981 hit song by holding on tight to his dreams. Kickstarting his full-time racing journey at the age of 15 in Legends cars, the Ridgefield, Conn. native excelled in late models before graduating to the ARCA Menards Series East in 2018. Alfredo, otherwise known as “Fast Pasta,” scored his first career win at South Boston Speedway that netted him a fifth place points finish. Competing in a partial schedule in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series for the DGR-Crosley outlet last year, Alfredo compiled respectable finishes of eighth at Charlotte and

ninth at Chicagoland. When Alfredo earned his part-time opportunity with Richard Childress Racing’s No. 21 NASCAR XFINITY Series program, he thrived in one of the most unique seasons given the learning curve and challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. As one of the three drivers who took the reigns of
making the connection Richard Childress Racing’s No. 21 Chevrolet Camaro for the 2020 season, Alfredo excelled at various tracks. Starting his season off with a sixth at Fontana, the 21-year-old displayed remarkable poise and maturity at tracks like Atlanta (10th), Homestead (fourth), Talladega summer (sixth), Kentucky (a pair of sixth place finishes), Bristol (sixth), and Las Vegas (eighth). Incredibly, Alfredo’s strong, steady efforts were good enough to place him 18th in the NASCAR XFINITY Series driver’s standings, an impressive feat in a division filled with talented racers and teams competing on a full-time schedule. Additionally, he’s become a fan favorite not only for his memorable nickname, but for his determination on the track and social media interaction. Heading into Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 300 at Texas Motor Speedway, the pride of the Nutmeg State bided his time in a rather wild Stage 1 before picking up the pace in Stage 2 with a solid sixth-place finish. Surviving the rash of cautions in the final stage that eliminated contenders like 0 4 2

Riley Herbst, Jeb Burton, Joe Graf, Jr., Colby Howard, Myatt Snider, Justin Allgaier, Ross Chastain, Brandon Jones, and Jeremy Clements, Alfredo found himself in a position to possibly nab his first career NASCAR XFINITY Series win. Running in second position and right along the PJ1-laden middle groove in the waning laps, Alfredo started closing in on leader Noah Gragson. Despite the gains he made in the final circuits of the race, Harrison Burton and his No. 20 Toyota Supra made like Lewis Hamilton at Portimão by just sending it with an incredible pace. Passing by Alfredo with less than five laps remaining, Burton caught Gragson on the final corner on the final lap, scooting to his inside for his third career win. Crossing the stripe with a careerbest third, Alfredo, who was understandably emotional following the race, reflected on his journey as a young man from New England to a competitive, frontrunning racer in one of NASCAR’s top national divisions. “I never even dreamed (of

this),” Alfredo said. “Of course, I found my passion with racing pretty late compared to the other guys. I’ve only been racing for six years which that’s crazy in itself. The fact I’m at this level and have so many amazing people around me that help me get to the track every week and do what I love and be competitive is something that I’m really thankful for. “It was a surprise to be where I’m at today and be as competitive as I have been, especially with a year like this with no practice and qualifying, I’ve surprised myself in a lot of ways this year.” More than making the grade in a year in which 0 4 4
on-track familiarity and finetuning was essentially eliminated with the COVID-19 protocols, Alfredo gelled with crew chief Andy Street while knocking on the door for strong finishes and, in Saturday’s case, a battle for the win. As of press time, Alfredo’s 2021 plans in NASCAR haven’t been set in stone, a situation that would certainly make Saturday’s finish even more emotional and poignant to the normally mild-mannered racer. When Alfredo was asked what he hopes team owners recall and appreciate with his performances and efforts this year, he

acknowledged his strongest intangible, a quality that separates the contenders from the pretenders. “I think consistency,” he observed. “It’s probably been the biggest thing. It’s been difficult not being in the car every week, not As featured in (with) that only for me behind the wheel Cape Cod, MA VERTISEMENT momentum people speak of physically 2020and mentally, and all that, but even for the race team. “This car ran every race. So there’s different drivers in it at times. You have to adjust the car to different drivers’ driving styles, communicate differently, and all that’s been tough. However, considering all of that, we’ve been very consistent. We

making the connection finished sixth five times. And we’ve finished in the top-five twice. So, we’ve had some really successful runs.” Like another New England sports icon proudly embraced with his exploits on the gridiron, Alfredo displays a confidence, poise, and humility exemplified by football great Tom Brady. Humble but candid, Alfredo praised the hard work and effort put forth by his team while he delivered with constant, strong performances, regardless of the challenges presented before him. “I feel like every week, at worst, we’re a top-10 car,” Alfredo said. “But we find ourselves running competitively in the top-five and top-three a lot of the time in these last handful of races, even with having to start in the back a lot because of something that happened the week before, whether I was in the car or not, and the algorithm or the driver change algorithm they had, there’s a lot of things that forced us to start outside of the top-15 in a majority of our races. “Of course, track position, as everyone talks about, is huge. You’re kind of a little bit behind the eight ball from the start but 0 4 6
we find a way to get up there and run very consistently every week. And I feel like I finished consistently in a majority of our races.” Beyond finishing consistently, Alfredo contended for a victory at the treacherous Texas Motor Speedway. Ultimately, Alfredo’s made a compelling case of “Making the Connection” this week as a thriving, bonafide NASCAR superstar racer who gave it his all in a 19-race audition this year for a full-time drive in the 2021 season and beyond.

interviews various drivers and personalities in the world of NASCAR. Today, he catches up with Harrison Burton, driver of the No. 20 DEX Imaging Toyota Supra in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. ▶▶ Congratulations on your win at Texas. Given that you went through a summer swoon, how special was it to win at a track that your father Jeff won at twice in his Cup career? That’s always cool. I love winning at places that I grew up either watching my dad win at or seeing videos and pictures of my dad winning. My dad won his first Cup race (in 1997), the first Cup race here as well, and the videos of my mom crying and my dad excited and all that. I grew up watching that stuff. When my racing career took off in a way where I had opportunities to come to the places that my dad had raced at, it was always cool to kinda remember what I did here as a kid playing on the playgrounds at each racetrack or motorhome lot with other kids in here. Now, to be my own man and do my own things here is awesome. Obviously, I haven’t done at the level that my dad did yet and he’ll probably still hold that over me as much as he can. But hopefully, one day, I’ll have the opportunity to do that as well.

In the hot seat ▶▶ Earlier this year, you won the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series race in nearly the same fashion at the virtual World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway with a last lap move. How cool was it to see real life imitate iRacing and win in the fashion that you did? That is crazy and awesome! Those things that we did in the iRacing realm while we were kind of all quarantined away and trying to stay safe was what kinda kept me sane. I was leading the points at the time in the XFINITY Series. And I just wanted to be at the racetrack. This is my happy place and this is what I love to do. When you’re kind of stripped away from that and sitting on your couch wondering what to do, that was nice to be able to have something to compete in and I definitely think those races kept me fresh and kept me in the competing mindset. Also, they were a lot of fun so that was the main thing.

Overall statistics show that cars carrying No. 5 in the NASCAR Cup Series have visited Victory Lane 45 times while recording 575 top-10 finishes in 1,569 starts. A total of 121 drivers have wheeled car No. 5 in at least one race. Felix Wilkes, driving a 1949 Lincoln, was the first driver to use No. 5 when he finished 27th in the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race on June 19, 1949, at the three-quartermile Charlotte Speedway. Cotton Owens was the first driver to win in car No. 5 when he led all 200 laps of the Aug. 16, 1960, event at the Piedmont Interstate Fairgrounds in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Hendrick Motorsports has not used No. 5 since the 2017 season but the number is expected to return to the team’s four-car lineup next year.

Jimmie Johnson Prepares to say goodbye to hendrick motorsports BY Joseph wolkin Seven championships. Eighty-three wins.
He’s arguably the best competitor in modern-day racing. Jimmie Johnson is set to retire from full-time NASCAR racing at season’s end. But before he hangs up his helmet with Hendrick Motorsports, the legend himself is saying goodbye in his own, unique way. Johnson wants fans to know one thing: They can still see him race next year in the NTT IndyCar Series. ▶▶ As you wrap up your NASCAR career, is all of the success you’ve had surreal? “It really has been. My mom was a school bus driver and my dad was a heavy equipment operator in Southern California. I grew up racing on dirt bikes. As I moved up to bigger dirt bikes, it was too expensive. We couldn’t afford to go racing anymore. I can’t believe today how certain people believed in me, the opportunities afforded to me and the timing to perform at the right time. I’m still blown away that I even got the chance.” ▶▶ How difficult is it to say goodbye to NASCAR? “It’s bittersweet. I’ve been on the NASCAR scene for 21 seasons. In some respects, I’m fulfilled in that space. I’ve had a lot of success 0 5 8
and I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished. I’m in a unique position where I can create opportunities in other series. The racer inside of me wants to do that. I’m optimistic about the future.” ▶▶ What was your reaction when you saw Michael Jordan is investing in NASCAR? “I’m excited and I’m excited for NASCAR. We’ll see more new teams as we get closer to the debut of the new car. There’s a lot of talk about the business model that goes with the new car. I’m excited to see that car launch. Michael coming in -- there’s no bigger name in sports. Denny [Hamlin] has an open eye to many business ventures. I’m proud of him to step out and do this with Bubba Wallace driving the car. It’s a unique opportunity.”

Recapping Jimmie Johnson’s NASCAR career
■■ Jimmie Johnson, driving the #48 Lowe’s Chevrolet, during practice for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Subway 500 on October 22, 2004 at the Martinsville Speedway.
Darkest Day Jimmie Johnson’s victory at Martinsville in fall 2004 was marred by tragedy. by Jared turner While Jimmie Johnson has savored most of his 83 career NASCAR Cup Series victories, there’s one he remembers for the most tragic of reasons. It occurred on October 24, 2004 at Martinsville Speedway, where Johnson led the race’s final 61 laps but in truly unordinary fashion was ordered not to go to Victory Lane after taking the checkered flag and performing a burnout on the frontstretch. What Johnson didn’t know but would soon learn was that 10 people connected with the Hendrick Motorsports organization had died earlier that day when a Hendrick team plane crashed in dense fog while traveling en route to Martinsville Speedway. Among those killed in the accident were John Hendrick (Hendrick Motorsports’ president and the brother of team owner Rick Hendrick), Ricky Hendrick (Rick Hendrick’s son), Kimberly and Jennifer Hendrick (Rick’s twin nieces), Hendrick Motorsports general manager Jeff Turner and Hendrick Motorsports lead engine builder Randy Dorton. Johnson, who along with Hendrick Motorsports’ other drivers was summoned to the NASCAR hauler immediately after the race, was understandably in no mood to celebrate what was his sixth win 0 6 0
Roar! weekly racing magazine: october 22, 2020
of the season. Rather, his heart was heavy as he grieved the unexpected loss of those whom he not only knew but loved. Now, each time Johnson returns to race at Martinsville, he competes in memory of the lives lost on that dark Sunday in 2004. With this weekend’s race slated to be Johnson’s final one at the Virginia short track as a full-time NASCAR Cup Series driver and as part of Hendrick Motorsports, the seven-time champion would love nothing more than to pay tribute to his late friends by winning here one more time. “This race means a lot to us Hendrick drivers,” said Johnson, who owns an impressive nine wins at Martinsville but hasn’t prevailed at the .526-mile oval since 2016. “With or without a championship to compete for, I want to be the guy carrying the trophy out of here to honor those families.”
