Wish granted. With the creation of the all-new ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the big day has

finally arrived. And, boy, what a day it could turn out to be. Along with being the first playoff race on a road course since NASCAR instituted a season-ending playoff for its premier series in 2004, the Bank of America ROVAL 400 is also an elimination race in which the field of championship contenders will be whittled from 16 to 12. points scenarios and all the implications that come with a strong or poor finish this weekend, Sunday afternoon’s showdown on the new 17turn, 2.28-mile ROVAL road course oval could set a new standard for what wild and crazy look like. “We’re all going into it with no real experience there,” said championship contender Aric Almirola, one of the drivers looking to solidify a berth in the Round of 12. “It’s an unknown and all of the drivers are a little nervous about it. For the fans, the most exciting part is the track’s narrow and low on grip, so it’s a bit sketchy. “We’re going to be beating and banging trying to battle for position in the slow, technical parts of the infield and we’re going to be flying around the oval part. It’s going to be interesting.”

While drivers have tested at the ROVAL, putting 40 drivers on track at the same time is an entirely different matter. “Surviving is going to be the biggest thing,” seventime Monster Energy Series champion Jimmie Johnson said. “There’s so many places you can make mistakes. For our fans to be able to sit in the stands and watch us turn left and right is going to be different. The likelihood of there being contact between

second place and first, late in the race, is very high there. … It is a true wild-card race.” And that goes not just for the drivers, but also for the crew chiefs and mechanics who build their cars. One of the most unique aspects of the ROVAL design is that it includes a significant portion of the traditional Charlotte Motor Speedway quad-oval layout. So, while the two layouts are obviously quite a bit different, there’s some

overlap, too. “The interesting thing about Charlotte, as opposed to like Watkins Glen, is we do still have the actual oval track we go on,” said Billy Scott, crew chief on the No. 41 StewartHaas Racing Ford of playoff driver Kurt Busch. “Going on the oval with the extra banking and the speed does change it a little bit. You have to keep that in mind. So, essentially, this race is going

to be the first one of its kind.” So what if, just hypothetically, a team brought the same car for this weekend’s ROVAL race that it campaigned on the quadoval back in May? How would that work out? “Any time you tried to turn right, you basically would not make the turns,” said Greg Ives, crew chief for championship contender Alex Bowman. “It would be pretty

much a disaster. You would be lapped pretty quickly. You would be better off bringing your street car than you would your Charlotte Cup car that’s just for the oval. The setups are just so different. “The dynamic of an intermediate Charlotte versus the ROVAL Charlotte, it’s really even hard to fathom the pain you would feel.”

If anything translates over from The Glen to the ROVAL, Elliott could be a factor.. ▶▶ One of the Monster Energy Series’ best and most consistent road course racers in recent years, Kyle Busch comes to the ROVAL riding high on the heels of a big win at Richmond. Known in the garage area as “Golden Boy,” Fred Lorenzen was one of NASCAR’s first superstar drivers even though the native of Elmhurst, Illinois, competed in only select races. Born on Dec. 30, 1934, Lorenzen began racing modifieds and late models at Chicagoarea short tracks soon after graduating from high school. He made his debut in NASCAR’s premier series in 1956 at Pennsylvania’s

1961 season. Over the next seven seasons, Lorenzen won 26 NASCAR premier series races in only 112 starts. His victories included the 1965 Daytona 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 in 1963 and ’65. Lorenzen shocked the NASCAR community in April 1967 when he stepped away from driving. He returned to the cockpit in 1970 but ran only 29 races over three seasons before

A Life of Service Robbins is Very Happy with Stewart Haas Racing BY BEN WHITE

cott Robbins, transporter driver for Stewart-Haas Racing and driver Aric Almirola, was introduced to NASCAR through a trip with his Dad and friends to the inaugural Cup series event at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 1993. Soon after, Robbins began his own racing career by helping his brother work on racecars for local dirt track competition around the state. In 2000, a friend Robbins served with in the United States Army was helping a NASCAR Busch North Series team and invited him to join the team. Employment and a championship with another Busch North organization prompted Robbins to make

the move south to North Carolina in 2006 in hopes of becoming involved with a NASCAR team. Robbins began working with Team Penske’s Busch Series team before joining owner Randy Humphrey in 2010. Positions followed with Swan Racing, Front Row Motorsports and Richard Petty Motorsports before joining Stewart Haas Racing in 2016. “I had worked as a general mechanic with Penske before becoming a transporter driver with the rest of the teams I’ve worked for,” Robbins said. “(Laughter) I had my CDL and somebody found about it. I helped Brad Keselowski for just a little bit and the driving kind of took off from there. I found out I really liked it. Stewart Haas is absolutely awesome to work for. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working for them the whole time I’ve been here.” Robbins is in charge of making sure every piece and part needed for any given race weekend is within arm’s reach. It’s an important responsibility, especially when repairs are needed. “We have everything on the truck we need to rebuild the car,” Robbins said. “Sometimes that equipment changes from week to week.”

Florence was the Atlantic hurricane season’s first big event in 2018. During its trip from the African coast, the storm alternated between category 4 and category 1 status, back and forth, prompting fears of a disastrous blow to the United States. Thankfully, Florence weakened before making landfall in Wrightsville Beach, NC, but still brought destructive winds, rains and flooding in its wake. The immediate area around PIRTEK South End sustained little damage, Cook said. “People were bracing for the storm but there was no real damage to us,” he said. “We had heavy rains all day on that Sunday and there was flooding around some of the nearby creeks, but otherwise not too bad. Not nearly as severe as in New Bern, Fayetteville and cities near the ocean.” Hurricane preparation wasn’t the only preemptive maintenance going on during the last few weeks. PIRTEK South End was also busy re-hosing snow-removal equipment in advance of the winter months. PIRTEK technicians installed new hoses in plows, salt-spreaders and dump trucks.

Charlotte gets little snow, averaging only a few inches per year. But when a winter blast does come through that area, it can paralyze the community, Cook said, making the city’s removal efforts imperative. “Weather is usually mild in Charlotte. We tend to miss a lot of the major storms and the bad winter weather,” Cook said. “But when it does snow here, it can really shut things down. That’s why the city needs to keep this equipment ready and we’re a part of that.”

This month, Dr. Cormier answered a series of questions about his preferred concussion evaluation tool, the I-Portal Portable Assessment System (I-PAS). ▶▶ What impact do you think the implementation of the I-PAS will have on NASCAR? “We always want to make sure it’s more of a help to NASCAR than a scare. We’re not trying to pull drivers out of the car. We’re trying to help them feel better so they perform better.” ▶▶ How does the I-PAS compare with other concussion tests? “From the standard of detecting and diagnosing oculomotor, vestibular and reaction time deficiencies, it takes the subjectivity out of the hands of the examiner. spotlight going on in the brain without the subjectivity of some exams, or without an athlete trying to trick a certain test.” ▶▶ Will a driver go through baseline testing at the start of the season so that the test will detect discrepancies from those metrics head impacts? “You don’t need any baseline testing. The system is able to track and develop a data bank of what’s normal for people of a certain age group. It can alter some of the parameters. When dealing with racecar drivers, it considers that their reflex timing and reaction timing is going to be quicker than the average population. Once you establish a normal value for a particular sport, you can test and see variances when there’s some sort of issue.” ▶▶ How is the test administered? “You put these goggles on, and you have the ability to make sure your vision is completely clear. You can see the stimuli. Then you follow the stimuli. It’s testing the functionality of smooth pursuits and looking for stagnants. Blurred vision isn’t a part of it. It will find what’s going on in the microscopic function of the brain. Say you’re having difficulty looking to your left. If we find that’s where the deficit is occurring, then we can focus on those areas to rehab and get where they need to be.” ▶▶ When do you expect to administer this test to racecar drivers? After races? “This isn’t necessarily going to take the place of a clinician’s medical acumen. If a driver didn’t lose consciousness and his car wasn’t altered, he’s going to continue to drive. A driver won’t come off the track for testing. If the car flips or collides, then I see the utility in using this. IndyCar has already started to use this at the track. For NASCAR and ARCA, from what we’ve been told, it doesn’t look like it will be an issue, but we haven’t been given the green light yet.”

n Aug. 2, 1997, Ricky Rudd, driver of his own Rudd Performance Motorsports No. 10 Ford, won the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway by stretching his fuel without a pit stop during the final 46 laps. His surprise victory is still talked about as one of the greatest gambles in NASCAR history. As predicted, race leaders Dale Jarrett, Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon were forced to pit for fuel in the closing laps. But Rudd and Jeff Burton decided to stay out, hoping a combination of careful use of the throttle and

late cautions could stretch their gas tanks to the finish. Burton hit debris with 15 laps remaining but was able to get to pit road for four fresh tires. A speeding penalty issued by NASCAR erased any hope of pulling off the win. That put Rudd into the lead on lap 151 of the 160-lap race. The sixth and final caution period was displayed when Rich Bickle crashed in Turn 3 with five laps remaining. After track cleaning was complete, Rudd only had to hold off Bobby Labonte for two laps to take the biggest victory of his 23-year career. A dry tank on the cool down lap forced Rudd to coast into victory lane. “We rolled the dice,” Rudd said in Victory Lane. “We were either going to win it or finish last.”

ixteen drivers qualified for the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, with entry based on having a win or their position in the standings following the 26-race regular season While baseline point totals are reset equally heading into the playoffs, a driver earns five playoff points for every race win, and one playoff point for every stage win, during the regular season. Drivers can continue to amass playoff points once the playoffs commence, adding to their regular season totals. A driver’s playoff points carry over to each new round – except the Championship Round – provided he is still championship-eligible. The driver leading the point standings at the end of the regular season starts the playoffs with an additional 15 playoff points. In fact, the top-10 drivers in points after the regular season are all awarded playoff points on a descending scale. The number of playoff drivers in contention for the championship decreases after every three playoff races, from 16 to start the playoffs; 12 after playoff Race No. 3; eight after playoff Race No. 6; and four after playoff Race No. 9.

A win by a championship-eligible driver in any playoff race automatically clinches the winning driver a spot in the next round. The positions for each round that aren’t filled based on wins in the previous round are filled based on point totals at the end of the previous round. The first three races of the playoffs are known as the Round of 16 and are held this year at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Richmond Raceway and the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway, respectively. The ROVAL, a new 17-turn road course where the field of championship-eligible drivers decreases to 12, is the first of three playoff elimination races. The next three races make up the Round of 12 and are held at Dover International Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway and Kansas Speedway, respectively. At Kansas, the playoff field is whittled to eight. Martinsville Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway and ISM Raceway make up the Round of 8, which culminates with four drivers leaving Arizona in title contention. The champion is the highest finisher among the four title contenders in the Championship 4 race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Stressors aside, there are many reasons to love the playoffs – especially in NASCAR’s premier division, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Here are the top five reasons:

▶▶ THE SCHEDULE SHAKEUP: The Monster Energy Series’ Round of 16 has an all-new look this season. Out are Chicagoland Speedway (which hosted the playoff opener from 2011-2017), New Hampshire Motor Speedway (which lost its fall race date) and Dover International Speedway (now the first race in the Round of 12). This year, the Round of 16 consists of races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Richmond Raceway and a new 17-turn road course formally dubbed the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway. ▶▶ THE CHAMPIONSHIP 4: It’s one race featuring four championship contenders all on equal points footing, with no bonus points up for grabs. ▶▶ Kevin Harvick: Kevin Harvick started the year red-hot, piling up five victories in the first 12 races. He’s since cooled off, but not a lot. At press time, the 2014 Monster Energy Series champ ranked second in the standings and had six wins — tied with Kyle Busch for most in the series. While no one is a lock for the Championship 4, Harvick comes pretty close. ▶▶ Kyle Busch: Handily beaten by Kevin Harvick in the first month of the season, Kyle Busch mashed the proverbial throttle in early April by going on a three-race winning streak, and he barely lifted over the remainder of the regular season. By far the most dominant of the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas, Busch stands an excellent chance of capturing his second Monster Energy Series championship. ▶▶ MARTIN TRUEX JR.: On pace to match or even surpass the numbers he laid down in last year’s championship season, Martin Truex Jr. has enjoyed another stellar Monster Energy Series campaign with his Denver-based Furniture Row Racing team. What’s the biggest difference between 2017 and 2018 for Truex? Last season, he was the clear championship frontrunner. This season, he’s one of three. ▶▶ CLINT BOWYER: Enjoying a renaissance kind of season, Clint Bowyer is finally back to his front-running ways after five years in the NASCAR wilderness. From late June through early August, Jones finished worse than seventh just once in a seven-race stretch – a telltale sign of his progression.

hile Kurt Busch’s season has lacked a defining moment like he had in 2017 with his victory in the Daytona 500, the 2004 champ has been stout enough. Top-10 finishes have certainly come a lot easier than top-five results but, as of press time, Busch had snared three poles – a testament to the kind of speed his Ford has carried on occasion. Busch, who recently turned 40, appears to be as happy both personally and professionally as ever, which certainly can’t hurt in the ultra-competitive world of playoff racing where drivers look for every edge.

Instead, he failed to advance even beyond the Round of 12 thanks to an untimely engine failure in the elimination race at Kansas Speedway. This season, Larson hasn’t been nearly as fast nearly as often, but he’s hoping to have better luck on his side in the playoffs while finding some of the speed he showed so often in 2017.

Being a former championship runner-up and Championship 4 qualifier could give Hamlin a mental edge in the playoffs compared to some of his less seasoned counterparts, however.

Following an offseason move to Team Penske, a Wood Brothers affiliate, the third-generation driver entered 2018 with much higher expectations. While nothing has come easy for Blaney this season, he’s one of several drivers capable of playing the role of championship spoiler if he peaks at the right time.

hile the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team has been uncharacteristically mediocre this season, Jimmie Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus can never be completely written off in a playoff, crunch-time scenario. After all, they haven’t won seven championships by accident. When it comes to clutch performances, no one is better. “I show up each week thinking that we have the capability to pull it off and still go to Victory Lane,” said Johnson, a winner of 83 NASCAR premier series races at press time. “That is that optimism that I refuse to lose.”

As Hendrick Motorsports has made its cars better, Bowman has become a more consistent top-10 and even occasional top-five performer – which team owner Rick Hendrick has rewarded by extending Bowman’s contract through 2020. While a championship this season is probably a longshot, Bowman seems to possess the abilities and temperament to enjoy a bright future in the sport.

fter limited driving roles in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in three of the past four seasons, Brett Moffitt was looking for a steady ride in 2018 and he found it in the Camping World Truck Series with Hattori Racing Enterprises. Turns out, the move has been nothing but a positive one for the Iowa-born driver. Fifteen races into the season, Moffitt had racked up four wins and looked the part of a serious championship contender. Whether he can ultimately pose a serious championship threat to Johnny Sauter remains questionable, however.
