A New Round of Intrigue The Playoffs Continue with 12 Contenders at Dover By Jared turner

istorically the home to the final race in the Round of 16, Dover International Speedway finds itself in a new slot for the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs as the track hosts Sunday’s first race in the Round of 12. Dover, a 1-mile track known as the “Monster Mile,” was for many years little more than Jimmie Johnson’s personal playground, but in recent times the high-banked concrete oval has been kind others — most notably, spring

2018 Dover winner Kevin Harvick, fall 2017 Dover winner Kyle Busch and fall 2016 winner Martin Truex Jr. Harvick, Busch and Johnson, of course, have been this season’s three most dominant drivers, so no one will be surprised to see one of their car numbers atop the scoring pylon when Sunday’s Gander Outdoors 400 concludes. Then again, the start of a new playoff round could bring about the emergence of new contenders, or it could closely resemble the Round of 16 — which produced three different Dover Preview: October 4, 2018

winners (Brad Keselowski, Busch and Ryan Blaney) but only one from the so-called “Big 3” of Harvick, Busch and Truex. What’s going to go down at Dover? Only this much is certain: Each of the remaining 12 championship contenders certainly wants to get this round started off on the right foot and understands the importance of doing just that. After Dover, the series moves to alwaysunpredictable Talladega Superspeedway before heading to Kansas Speedway for an elimination race. “Definitely looking forward to it,” Truex said of this round. “A couple of good tracks for us and Talladega, so we’ll see.

Hopefully, we can do what we did the first round and have two really good first races and not have to worry about it. I feel like Dover and Kansas are both places we can go and win at. Our team has done a really good job of being prepared and showing up to the track ready. I feel like the first two races of the playoffs we were in position to win and we were doing all of the right things. We’ll just keep doing what we’re doing and hopefully win a race in the next round.”

Thanks to the series-high 55 playoff points he’s amassed for race wins and stage wins in the first 29 races, Busch begins this round as the points leader. Harvick, with 50 playoff points, is second, followed by Truex in third with 38 playoff points. The rest of the 12-driver championship field consists of Keselowski, Clint Bowyer, Joey Logano, Kurt Busch, Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, Aric Almirola and Alex Bowman. Johnson, who failed to advance on the basis of a tiebreaker, owns a Monster Energy Series’ record 11 victories at Dover. His most recent win at the Monster Mile — or anywhere, for that

matter — came in June 2017. After missing the Round of 12, Johnson is glad to be heading to Dover. “I can relax a little bit more coming to this racetrack,” he said. “With it being my best track and the love I have for this place, I’m always excited to come, but trying to get the No. 48 car back into Victory Lane, I can take a little pressure of myself here knowing that the rhythm-

▶▶ Jimmie Johnson’s 11 Dover wins are a Monster Energy Series record, and after missing the Round of 12 on the basis of a tiebreaker, the seventime champ will no doubt have extra motivation this weekend. ▶▶ Kevin Harvick led 201 of 400 laps on the way to a commanding victory at Dover earlier this year. Harvick earned his first Dover victory in even more dominant fashion when he led 355 laps in the fall of 2015. ▶▶ Always a contender to win at the concrete tracks of Dover and Bristol, Kyle Busch is the defending winner of the fall race at the Monster Mile, where he owns a total of three victories dating back to his first Dover win in 2008. ▶▶ Martin Truex Jr. owns two Dover victories, which have come with different teams and nearly a decade apart. He’ll have lots of incentive this weekend after being robbed of a victory at the ROVAL, where he led on the final lap before contact with Jimmie Johnson. ▶▶ Brad Keselowski has arguably been the Monster Energy Series’ hottest driver over the past six weeks or so. The Team Penske wheelman could continue his front-running ways at Dover, where he earned a victory in 2012.

Rusty Wallace became a hero to Midwestern race fans who were experiencing NASCAR racing for the first time as the sport’s popularity exploded during the 1980s and ’90s. Born on Aug. 14, 1956, in Arnold, Missouri, Wallace’s father raced at the local short tracks and Russ Wallace’s three sons, Rusty, Mike and Kenny, followed him into the sport.

After showing promise on the rough-and-tumble tracks of his home state, Rusty Wallace’s first taste of national success came in 1979 when he finished third in the USAC stock car championship and was named rookie of the year. In 1980, Wallace gave a brief preview of things to come when he finished second in his NASCAR Cup Series debut at Atlanta Motor Speedway while driving for Roger Penske. He became a Cup Series regular in 1984 and won 55 races over the following 22 seasons. The highlight of Wallaceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s NASCAR career came in 1989 when he edged Dale Earnhardt by 12 points to claim the Cup Series championship.

Wallace retired from racing at the end of the 2005 season and he has worked as an analyst for both television and radio coverage of the sport. He was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2013.

Hopefully, they’ll be happy about it.”

A Wearer of Many Hats Lowe Works to Keep MBM Moving Forward BY BEN WHITE

anny Lowe, tire specialist for Management Business Motorsports and driver Timmy Hill, was introduced to NASCAR through the 1998 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis. In 2006, he attended his first Cup series event at Bristol Motor Speedway. He immediately considered NASCAR his favorite sport and dreamed of someday being a part of the action.

While working full-time in a capacity away from the sport, Lowe found his calling as a mechanic for a short track team in Austin, Texas. Doing so proved valuable for his present role as a crew member in NASCAR’s premier series. “They were a small short track team and they let me to play around with their cars and learn a few things,” Lowe said. “Then when I moved out to Catawba, N.C., I saw in January of this past year that (team owner) Carl Long was asking for mechanics. I responded to him on Facebook and then went it to talk with him and got an interview and everything went from there.” Lowe works in various positions at MBM that includes seeking out sponsorship for the team. During the times he isn’t turning wrenches, he spends time behind a desk working on the business side of the operation. “Back at the shop, I do a lot of the administrative things with NASCAR and things of that nature and also marketing and public relations,” Lowe said. “I work as tire specialist during races and manage all of our tires. I put all of them in sets to make sure the pressures are correct and check temperatures and tread depths and things like that.” Dover Preview: October 4, 2018

technician from PIRTEK Overland got a call recently to perform a task that sounds simple enough: setting a wheel in motion. Except that this wheel is 180 feet tall. The St. Louis-area PIRTEK dispatched a Mobile Service Vehicle to an amusement park in Eureka, Missouri, to work on a giant Ferris wheel. “It was pretty cool working on the

inside of the park,” said Chris Gibson, lead technician at PIRTEK Overland. “We did the work early in the day so we wouldn’t disrupt the park’s customers.” The van rolled in at 5 a.m. and was out by 10 a.m. during the three-day project. PIRTEK provides industrial hose replacement service on site. When hydraulic or pneumatic equipment

blows a hose, a technician is available 24 hours a day to perform the replacement from a Mobile Service Vehicle. Globally, PIRTEK has more than 400 locations and 2,000 Mobile Service Vehicles in 23 countries. The Ferris wheel that Gibson worked on has a maximum capacity of 320 riders who move around the colossal circle at about 10 miles per hour – a rotation-and-a-half per minute. The ride had been shut down for repairs when an inspector spied some worn hydraulic hoses. “The Ferris wheel had blown out a pump,” Gibson said. “They did the repair, but the final inspection of that repair

spotlight also determined that the hoses were bad and needed replacing.” Several contractors came out to bid on the job. The park gave the work to PIRTEK. Hydraulic power remains a logical choice for Ferris wheels, because it furnishes such a smooth, easy ride for customers – despite the significant amount of torque generated. Many of the other rides in a typical amusement park also run on hydraulics. The pressurized fluid flows through heavy-duty hoses and delivers energy to move the attractions along and keep the fun going. But these hoses require maintenance over time as their exteriors erode and as particles in the fluid break down the inside surfaces. Gibson changed out the wheel motor hoses, brake hoses and pressure lines. He installed about 850 feet of half-inch line during the course of the project, working on a man-lift that was 20 to 30 feet above the ground. “Heights and I don’t usually get along, but I had work to do, so I didn’t think much about it,” Gibson said. again. Floyd Mays, owner of PIRTEK Reading Road in Cincinnati, services dozens and dozens of rides each winter when a park in Mason, Ohio, reduces its hours for the offseason. Depending on the needs, Mays said the service requires about a day per ride at the 364-acre attraction, billed as the largest amusement and water park in the Midwest. We’re not trying to pull drivers out of the car. We’re trying to help them feel better so they perform better.” ▶▶ How does the I-PAS compare with other concussion tests? “From the standard of detecting and diagnosing oculomotor, vestibular and reaction time deficiencies, it takes the subjectivity out of the hands of the examiner. spotlight going on in the brain without the subjectivity of some exams, or without an athlete trying to trick a certain test.” ▶▶ Will a driver go through baseline testing at the start of the season so that the test will detect discrepancies from those metrics head impacts? “You don’t need any baseline testing. The system is able to track and develop a data bank of what’s normal for people of a certain age group. It can alter some of the parameters. When dealing with racecar drivers, it considers that their reflex timing and reaction timing is going to be quicker than the average population. Once you establish a normal value for a particular sport, you can test and see variances when there’s some sort of issue.” ▶▶ How is the test administered? “You put these goggles on, and you have the ability to make sure your vision is completely clear. You can see the stimuli. Then you follow the stimuli. It’s testing the functionality of smooth pursuits and looking for stagnants. Blurred vision isn’t a part of it. It will find what’s going on in the microscopic function of the brain. Say you’re having difficulty looking to your left. If we find that’s where the deficit is occurring, then we can focus on those areas to rehab and get where they need to be.” ▶▶ When do you expect to administer this test to racecar drivers? After races? “This isn’t necessarily going to take the place of a clinician’s medical acumen. If a driver didn’t lose consciousness and his car wasn’t altered, he’s going to continue to drive. A driver won’t come off the track for testing. If the car flips or collides, then I see the utility in using this. IndyCar has already started to use this at the track. For NASCAR and ARCA, from what we’ve been told, it doesn’t look like it will be an issue, but we haven’t been given the green light yet.”

n Sept. 1, 1985, Bill Elliott, driver of the No. 9 Melling Racing Ford, made NASCAR history by winning the prestigious Labor Day Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. The NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee from Dawsonville, Ga. led 100 of 367 laps including the final 44 to collect the Winston $1 million special bonus posted by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Amid 11 victories that season, Elliott collected the lucrative pay day by winning three of NASCAR’s four most prestigious races. The Daytona 500, the Winston 500 at Talladega, Ala., and Southern 500 at

Darlington sealed the deal, while brake issues in the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway prevented a sweep of NASCAR’s most prestigious events. Cale Yarborough, driver of the Harry Ranier Racing Ford, gave Elliott his closet challenge until a power steering pump failed in the closing laps. Amid initial heavy smoke, the Timmonsville, S.C. native continued on and managed to wrestle his car to a second-place finish. Elliott’s victory garnered headlines around the world, helping NASCAR to enjoy its first foray into the international spotlight. “Thank the good Lord for looking out for me today,” Elliott said in the “Forty Years of Stock car Racing book series. “A lot of things happened that were unexpected. How the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs Work by jared turner

ixteen drivers qualified for the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, with entry based on having a win or their position in the standings following the 26-race regular season While baseline point totals are reset equally heading into the playoffs, a driver earns five playoff points for every race win, and one playoff point for every stage win, during the regular season. Drivers can continue to amass playoff points once the playoffs commence, adding to their regular season totals. A driver’s playoff points carry over to each new round – except the Championship Round – provided he is still championship-eligible. The driver leading the point standings at the end of the regular season starts the playoffs with an additional 15 playoff points. In fact, the top-10 drivers in points after the regular season are all awarded playoff points on a descending scale. The number of playoff drivers in contention for the championship decreases after every three playoff races, from 16 to start the playoffs; 12 after playoff Race No. 3; eight after playoff Race No. 6; and four after playoff Race No. 9.

A win by a championship-eligible driver in any playoff race automatically clinches the winning driver a spot in the next round. The positions for each round that aren’t filled based on wins in the previous round are filled based on point totals at the end of the previous round. The first three races of the playoffs are known as the Round of 16 and are held this year at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Richmond Raceway and the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway, respectively. The ROVAL, a new 17-turn road course where the field of championship-eligible drivers decreases to 12, is the first of three playoff elimination races. The next three races make up the Round of 12 and are held at Dover International Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway and Kansas Speedway, respectively. At Kansas, the playoff field is whittled to eight. Martinsville Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway and ISM Raceway make up the Round of 8, which culminates with four drivers leaving Arizona in title contention. or many NASCAR fans, the playoffs are undoubtedly the most exciting time of the year. For the drivers in pursuit of a championship, no time is more stressful. Stressors aside, there are many reasons to love the playoffs – especially in NASCAR’s premier division, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Here are the top five reasons:

▶▶ THE SCHEDULE SHAKEUP: The Monster Energy Series’ Round of 16 has an all-new look this season. Out are Chicagoland Speedway (which hosted the playoff opener from 2011-2017), New Hampshire Motor Speedway (which lost its fall race date) and Dover International Speedway (now the first race in the Round of 12). This year, the Round of 16 consists of races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Richmond Raceway and a new 17-turn road course formally dubbed the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway. ▶▶ THE CHAMPIONSHIP 4: It’s one race featuring four championship contenders all on equal points footing, with no bonus points up for grabs. The first driver among the four finalists to cross the finish line when the checkered waves at Homestead-Miami Speedway is the Monster Energy Series champion. Does it really get any better than this? NASCAR knocked a home run with its implementation of a winnertake-all Championship Race in 2014. Expect 2018 to be no exception.

▶▶ Kevin Harvick: Kevin Harvick started the year red-hot, piling up five victories in the first 12 races. He’s since cooled off, but not a lot. At press time, the 2014 Monster Energy Series champ ranked second in the standings and had six wins — tied with Kyle Busch for most in the series. While no one is a lock for the Championship 4, Harvick comes pretty close. ▶▶ Kyle Busch: Handily beaten by Kevin Harvick in the first month of the season, Kyle Busch mashed the proverbial throttle in early April by going on a three-race winning streak, and he barely lifted over the remainder of the regular season. By far the most dominant of the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas, Busch stands an excellent chance of capturing his second Monster Energy Series championship. ▶▶ MARTIN TRUEX JR.: On pace to match or even surpass the numbers he laid down in last year’s championship season, Martin Truex Jr. has enjoyed another stellar Monster Energy Series campaign with his Denver-based Furniture Row Racing team. What’s the biggest difference between 2017 and 2018 for Truex? Last season, he was the clear championship frontrunner. This season, he’s one of three. ▶▶ CLINT BOWYER: Enjoying a renaissance kind of season, Clint Bowyer is finally back to his front-running ways after five years in the NASCAR wilderness. With wins in the first half of the season at Martinsville and Michigan, the second-year Stewart-Haas Racing driver proved that if anyone can hang with the “Big Three” of Harvick, Busch and Truex Jr., it’s probably him. ▶▶ JIMMIE JOHNSON: OK, so Jimmie Johnson hasn’t had a Jimmie Johnson-like season – big deal. If Harvick can avoid a major mishap in one of the elimination rounds, he’s all but assured of making the Championship 4. Gibbs’ confidence in Jones was further solidified in July at Daytona when Jones scored his first career Monster Energy Series victory. From late June through early August, Jones finished worse than seventh just once in a seven-race stretch – a telltale sign of his progression.

hile Kurt Busch’s season has lacked a defining moment like he had in 2017 with his victory in the Daytona 500, the 2004 champ has been stout enough. Top-10 finishes have certainly come a lot easier than top-five results but, as of press time, Busch had snared three poles – a testament to the kind of speed his Ford has carried on occasion. This season, Larson hasn’t been nearly as fast nearly as often, but he’s hoping to have better luck on his side in the playoffs while finding some of the speed he showed so often in 2017.

Following an offseason move to Team Penske, a Wood Brothers affiliate, the third-generation driver entered 2018 with much higher expectations. While nothing has come easy for Blaney this season, he’s one of several drivers capable of playing the role of championship spoiler if he peaks at the right time.

hile the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team has been uncharacteristically mediocre this season, Jimmie Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus can never be completely written off in a playoff, crunch-time scenario. After all, they haven’t won seven championships by accident. When it comes to clutch performances, no one is better. “I show up each week thinking that we have the capability to pull it off and still go to Victory Lane,” said Johnson, a winner of 83 NASCAR premier series races at press time. “That is that optimism that I refuse to lose.”

As Hendrick Motorsports has made its cars better, Bowman has become a more consistent top-10 and even occasional top-five performer – which team owner Rick Hendrick has rewarded by extending Bowman’s contract through 2020. fter limited driving roles in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in three of the past four seasons, Brett Moffitt was looking for a steady ride in 2018 and he found it in the Camping World Truck Series with Hattori Racing Enterprises. Turns out, the move has been nothing but a positive one for the Iowa-born driver. Fifteen races into the season, Moffitt had racked up four wins and looked the part of a serious championship contender. Whether he can ultimately pose a serious championship threat to Johnny Sauter remains questionable, however.
