▶▶ The 1.5-mile Kansas Speedway was reconfigured and repaved between the track’s two Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series events in 2012. Expect Martin Truex Jr. to be a contender, as he swept the Kansas races in 2017. Jimmie Johnson won this race in May of 2015 thanks to a strong fuel strategy devised by crew chief Chad Knaus. Kansas had been a thorn in Kyle Busch’s side prior to his first career win here in May of 2016. Denny Hamlin set the race record here in 2012.

Cut-Down Day in Kansas Truex Jr., Keselowski Are in Jeopardy of Being Eliminated By Jared turner

nother elimination race is here. And, unlike the first elimination race in the playoffs, Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway could have a major impact on who ultimately wins the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship. That’s mainly because Martin Truex Jr. and Brad Keselowski — two drivers who entered the playoffs on the shortlist of championship favorites — are far from being guaranteed

advancement into the Round of 8. Clinging to the final transfer spot, Truex is eighth in the standings and 18 points ahead of Keselowski — the first driver on the wrong side of the cutline. Trailing Keselowski and in even more danger of not advancing are Ryan Blaney, Kyle Larson and Alex Bowman. Of the four drivers on the wrong side of the cutline, only Bowman absolutely must win to advance. But for Keselowski, Blaney or Larson to advance and not win, a whole lot of things would have to go right for them at Kansas. kansas Preview: October 18, 2018

The only surefire guarantee of advancing for most of the remaining championship contenders — including several on the right side of the cutline is winning on Sunday at Kansas. “Kansas is a good track for us,” said Larson, who trails Truex by 26 points for the final transfer spot. “We’ve challenged for wins there in the past, and, hopefully, we can go there next week and be strong.” Keselowski, a former Kansas winner and three-time winner this season, sounds much less optimistic about his chances of punching a ticket to the next round of the playoffs. “It’s certainly not ideal, but it is what it is,” Keselowski said, when asked to assess his feelings heading to Kansas.

Truex, despite facing some pressure of his own this weekend, carries the confidence that comes with being the winner of both of last year’s Monster Energy Series races at the 1.5-mile track. The reigning series champion finished second to Kevin Harvick at Kansas when the series returned earlier this year. “I think that’s a good place for us even if we had to win (to advance),” Truex said. “I am not saying we’re going

to go there and win. But anytime we can go to any of those tracks, I feel like we have a shot. It’s racing. A lot can happen. We’ll give it everything we got and bring a great car to Kansas. We’ll try to get the checkered flag.” Unlike the drivers who have to be mindful of the points situation, a win is the only goal this weekend for Aric Almirola, who with a victory last weekend at Talladega joined Dover winner Chase Elliott in punching an

We’re going to go there with no pressure at all, and one thing on our mind, and that’s to go win, to try and get some stage points, bonus points, get ready for that Round of 8. “For us, I think that’s our mindset. That’s a really fun mindset that I have never

experienced in my entire career. I’ve always went to the racetracks every single weekend, you know, anxious and focused and concentrated, nervous about, ‘what if, I hope we run good, I hope we have a shot to win.’ This weekend at Kansas, for us, nothing really else matters other than going there to win.” Harvick, who dominated the spring 2018 race at Kansas

with his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing team, is likewise guaranteed entry into the next round of the playoffs. But unlike Almirola and Elliott, Harvick’s berth in the Round of 8 is a result of all the playoff points he’s amassed over the course of the season. “It’s all about survive and advance at this point,” he said.

▶▶ Kevin Harvick has won two of the past four races at Kansas, his most recent victory coming in May of this year. Already locked into the next round, the 2014 champ has nothing to sweat this weekend. ▶▶ Martin Truex Jr. swept last year’s two races at Kansas and then finished second to Kevin Harvick in the spring of this year. Based on that stellar streak of recent performances here, he’s probably the favorite to go to Victory Lane. ▶▶ Kyle Busch struggled at Kansas for many years before finally scoring a breakthrough victory at the 1.5-mile track in May 2016. In some way, shape or form, “Rowdy” will almost inevitably be a factor on Sunday. ▶▶ Emporia, Kansas native Clint Bowyer is a two-time winner in 2018 but he’s never unlocked the door to victory at Kansas Speedway — his home track. When and if Bowyer finally does win at Kansas, it is bound to trigger a celebration for the ages. ▶▶ Brad Keselowski’s lone Kansas victory to date came in the spring of 2011. Currently on the wrong side of the cutline, the Team Penske driver may need a similarly remarkable performance this weekend to advance to the next round of the playoffs.

uck Baker, who honed his driving skills behind the wheel of a city bus in Charlotte, North Carolina, was one of NASCARâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s early stars and the first driver to capture consecutive championships in the Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premier stock car racing series.

Born on March 4, 1919, Baker began racing in 1939 at the legendary short track in Greenville, South Carolina, and his first NASCAR start came during the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race on June 19, 1949. hall of fame spotlight: Buck Baker

in 635 NASCAR Cup Series starts. His most successful seasons were during an incredible four-year span in which he claimed backto-back championships (1956 and ’57) and finished second in points twice (1955 and ’58). Baker’s first championship came while driving for owner Carl Kiekhaefer, who had assembled the first multi-car team in NASCAR while also blazing a trail by using his race cars to the promote his primary business. Baker’s second title was earned in his own cars.

Baker stepped away from driving following the fall 1976 event at Charlotte Motor Speedway. After his retirement, Baker owned and operated the Buck Baker Racing School. Baker died on April 14, 2002, at the age of 83, and he was posthumously inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2013.

t’s been a wild year for Alex Bowman, attempting to bring Hendrick Motorsports’ No. 88 car back to Victory Lane. While that hasn’t happened quite yet, he is still alive in the Round of 12 with momentum on his side. ▶▶ What did it mean to you to move onto the next round of the playoffs? “It meant a lot to make it to the Round of 12. A lot of people counted us out, so to be able to prove ourselves and make it makes me feel good. Our team has put in a ton of work this season on making our cars better and faster, and I think that is paying off.” ▶▶ What do you need to do to make it to the Round of 8? “I think we need to have a solid week. We need to go out and execute like we know how to do and get some stage points. Getting a win is key, so that is a big goal for this race.” ▶▶ How can this No. 88 team find Victory Lane? “If we can continue to make gains, we will be in Victory Lane soon. We have gotten stronger as the year has progressed, which is a positive for sure. We need to eliminate mistakes and continue making gains and we will get to Victory Lane.”

A Passion to Race Williams Works Hard to Keep McDowell’s FRM Ford Strong BY BEN WHITE

en Williams, underneath mechanic for Front Row Motorsports and driver Michael McDowell, has been a fan of NASCAR since he saw Bill Elliott win at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1985 when he was 5 years old. As he got older, he was attracted to not only watching stock car races but also competing in them. Williams drove his own race cars until

sponsorship became too difficult to find. “I worked with some short track teams and did that while in college at N.C. State and completed my business degree in the fall of 2003,” Williams said. “I felt I was pretty good at working on race cars and made a lot of friends in the garage at Hickory Motor Speedway and TriCounty Speedway. After college, I joined a Busch Series (now Xfinity Series) team sweeping floors and here I am.” Williams joined PPC Racing’s Cup series team and Roush Fenway Racing’s Busch Series program before joining Front Row Motorsports in 2012. He has since rejoined FRM. “I can work up front just as easily as I can underneath the race cars, just like a lot of guys in the garage,” Williams said. “I keep an eye on the transmission, keep an eye on the drive shaft and change grease in the rear end. What I spent most of my time on is the rear end housing and the rear suspension when we are changing springs and shocks.” kansas Preview: October 18, 2018

hat’s a monster truck competition without the proper mix of dirt underneath those whirling tires? The New Orleans Monster Jam was at hand and the equipment at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome was preparing the ground accordingly for the loud spectacle – lots of added soil and rearranging of earth. Then a front-end loader involved in the work blew a hydraulic hose. The rental company that provided the equipment called PIRTEK to get the preparation back on track. “It was an interesting chain of events,” said Carl Prince, owner

A technician drove out immediately to the Superdome to provide custom, onsite hose replacement for the idled equipment. Monster Truck Jam is a popular competition that has been going on every year since 1992. PIRTEK Elmwood’s Mobile Service Vehicle drove inside the Superdome right over the malleable mixture being prepped for the event. “The driver wondered if he might get stuck,” Prince said. “But it was OK, he didn’t have a problem.” PIRTEK provides hydraulic and industrial hose replacement sales and services. Since completing the service call, PIRTEK Elmwood has gone on to perform several other jobs for the rental company that furnished the front-end loader. “It was a good opportunity for us,” Prince said. Prince moved from his native Florida to live in the New Orleans area, where he’s been for the past 30 years or so. Before his PIRTEK ownership, he worked many years for a supply company that helped other businesses manage their inventories after Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill. The doors of his franchise opened in 2016, and he has pursued business from the oil market, port and marine companies, petrochemical plants and the manufacturing sector. But the job in the Superdome, Prince said, was one of the most interesting to date. “It gave the guys something to talk about,” he said.

This month, Dr. Cormier answered a series of questions about his preferred concussion evaluation tool, the I-Portal Portable Assessment System (I-PAS). ▶▶ What impact do you think the implementation of the I-PAS will have on NASCAR? “We always want to make sure it’s more of a help to NASCAR than a scare. We’re not trying to pull drivers out of the car. We’re trying to help them feel better so they perform better.” ▶▶ How does the I-PAS compare with other concussion tests? “From the standard of detecting and diagnosing oculomotor, vestibular and reaction time deficiencies, it takes the subjectivity out of the hands of the examiner. spotlight going on in the brain without the subjectivity of some exams, or without an athlete trying to trick a certain test.” ▶▶ Will a driver go through baseline testing at the start of the season so that the test will detect discrepancies from those metrics head impacts? “You don’t need any baseline testing. The system is able to track and develop a data bank of what’s normal for people of a certain age group. It can alter some of the parameters. When dealing with racecar drivers, it considers that their reflex timing and reaction timing is going to be quicker than the average population. Once you establish a normal value for a particular sport, you can test and see variances when there’s some sort of issue.” ▶▶ How is the test administered? “You put these goggles on, and you have the ability to make sure your vision is completely clear. You can see the stimuli. Then you follow the stimuli. It’s testing the functionality of smooth pursuits and looking for stagnants. Blurred vision isn’t a part of it. It will find what’s going on in the microscopic function of the brain. Say you’re having difficulty looking to your left. If we find that’s where the deficit is occurring, then we can focus on those areas to rehab and get where they need to be.” ▶▶ When do you expect to administer this test to racecar drivers? After races? “This isn’t necessarily going to take the place of a clinician’s medical acumen. If a driver didn’t lose consciousness and his car wasn’t altered, he’s going to continue to drive. A driver won’t come off the track for testing. If the car flips or collides, then I see the utility in using this. IndyCar has already started to use this at the track. For NASCAR and ARCA, from what we’ve been told, it doesn’t look like it will be an issue, but we haven’t been given the green light yet.”

n Feb. 28, 2010, Jimmie Johnson, driver of the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, won the Shelby American 400-mile race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The El Cajun, Calif. native sealed the deal by passing teammate Jeff Gordon for the win with 17 laps remaining. Gordon led 218 of the 267 laps in his No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. He took two tires instead of four on his final pit stop and was unable to hold off Johnson when the checkered flag waved. Johnson took four tires

and restarted in fourth and had no problem putting Gordon behind him. The victory was the 49th of Johnson’s then nine-year Cup career and second of six wins that season. “I’m really proud of the car we brought to the track,” Johnson said. “We had to work on it some through the race. But, you know, it was so fast on the long haul that we could make up ground from the 20th place starting position we had. “The four tires I think helped us more than anything. I was behind Jeff, chasing him. I’d been chasing him all day and wasn’t sure I’d get by him. How the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs Work by jared turner

ixteen drivers qualified for the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, with entry based on having a win or their position in the standings following the 26-race regular season While baseline point totals are reset equally heading into the playoffs, a driver earns five playoff points for every race win, and one playoff point for every stage win, during the regular season. Drivers can continue to amass playoff points once the playoffs commence, adding to their regular season totals. A driver’s playoff points carry over to each new round – except the Championship Round – provided he is still championship-eligible. The driver leading the point standings at the end of the regular season starts the playoffs with an additional 15 playoff points. In fact, the top-10 drivers in points after the regular season are all awarded playoff points on a descending scale. The number of playoff drivers in contention for the championship decreases after every three playoff races, from 16 to start the playoffs; 12 after playoff Race No. 3; eight after playoff Race No. 6; and four after playoff Race No. 9.

A win by a championship-eligible driver in any playoff race automatically clinches the winning driver a spot in the next round. The positions for each round that aren’t filled based on wins in the previous round are filled based on point totals at the end of the previous round. The first three races of the playoffs are known as the Round of 16 and are held this year at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Richmond Raceway and the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway, respectively. The ROVAL, a new 17-turn road course where the field of championship-eligible drivers decreases to 12, is the first of three playoff elimination races. The next three races make up the Round of 12 and are held at Dover International Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway and Kansas Speedway, respectively. At Kansas, the playoff field is whittled to eight. Martinsville Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway and ISM Raceway make up the Round of 8, which culminates with four drivers leaving Arizona in title contention. or many NASCAR fans, the playoffs are undoubtedly the most exciting time of the year. For the drivers in pursuit of a championship, no time is more stressful. Stressors aside, there are many reasons to love the playoffs – especially in NASCAR’s premier division, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Here are the top five reasons:

▶▶ THE SCHEDULE SHAKEUP: The Monster Energy Series’ Round of 16 has an all-new look this season. Out are Chicagoland Speedway (which hosted the playoff opener from 2011-2017), New Hampshire Motor Speedway (which lost its fall race date) and Dover International Speedway (now the first race in the Round of 12). This year, the Round of 16 consists of races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Richmond Raceway and a new 17-turn road course formally dubbed the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway. ▶▶ THE CHAMPIONSHIP 4: It’s one race featuring four championship contenders all on equal points footing, with no bonus points up for grabs. The first driver among the four finalists to cross the finish line when the checkered waves at Homestead-Miami Speedway is the Monster Energy Series champion. Does it really get any better than this? NASCAR knocked a home run with its implementation of a winnertake-all Championship Race in 2014. Expect 2018 to be no exception.

▶▶ TALLADEGA, AKA ‘THE WILD CARD’: Want intense racing? Try a race at wild, wacky and notoriously unpredictable Talladega Superspeedway situated smack dab in the middle of the Monster Energy Series playoffs. Talladega, a 2.66mile track widely considered the most treacherous of all venues on the Monster Energy Series tour, is the second race in the Round of 12 and has consistently proven to be a game-changer in terms of which drivers ultimately advance to the Round of 8.

▶▶ THE ELIMINATION RACES: If you like witnessing aggression, tune in or buy a ticket for any of the three elimination races in which the Monster Energy Series playoff field will be reduced by four drivers. This year’s elimination races are being run at the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Kansas Speedway and ISM Raceway, respectively. All three tracks are poised to crush some drivers’ dreams while propelling others further down the path to a possible championship.

▶▶ THE SURPRISES: Almost without fail, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs produce a major surprise or two. In 2014 – the first year of the elimination-style format and winner-take-all Championship Race – Ryan Newman came one position short of the championship, despite going the whole season without a win. The following year, Martin Truex Jr. – then considered a major underdog – surprised almost everyone by reaching the Championship 4 with a single-car team. ▶▶ Kevin Harvick: Kevin Harvick started the year red-hot, piling up five victories in the first 12 races. He’s since cooled off, but not a lot. At press time, the 2014 Monster Energy Series champ ranked second in the standings and had six wins — tied with Kyle Busch for most in the series. While no one is a lock for the Championship 4, Harvick comes pretty close. ▶▶ Kyle Busch: Handily beaten by Kevin Harvick in the first month of the season, Kyle Busch mashed the proverbial throttle in early April by going on a three-race winning streak, and he barely lifted over the remainder of the regular season. By far the most dominant of the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas, Busch stands an excellent chance of capturing his second Monster Energy Series championship. ▶▶ MARTIN TRUEX JR.: On pace to match or even surpass the numbers he laid down in last year’s championship season, Martin Truex Jr. has enjoyed another stellar Monster Energy Series campaign with his Denver-based Furniture Row Racing team. What’s the biggest difference between 2017 and 2018 for Truex? Last season, he was the clear championship frontrunner. This season, he’s one of three. ▶▶ CLINT BOWYER: Enjoying a renaissance kind of season, Clint Bowyer is finally back to his front-running ways after five years in the NASCAR wilderness. With wins in the first half of the season at Martinsville and Michigan, the second-year Stewart-Haas Racing driver proved that if anyone can hang with the “Big Three” of Harvick, Busch and Truex Jr., it’s probably him. ▶▶ JIMMIE JOHNSON: OK, so Jimmie Johnson hasn’t had a Jimmie Johnson-like season – big deal. He’s still a seven-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion, he still has arguably the best crew chief in the sport – Chad Knaus – and he certainly hasn’t forgotten how to drive. If Busch makes it back to Homestead as part of the Championship 4, he and his team, led by crew chief Adam Stevens, will be extremely tough for anyone to beat. “They out-execute what their car is capable of every single week,” teammate Denny Hamlin said.

If Harvick can avoid a major mishap in one of the elimination rounds, he’s all but assured of making the Championship 4. While claiming a second consecutive championship won’t come easily for Truex, especially in light of how strong both Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick have been this season, it’s certainly not outside the realm of possibility for the native of Mayetta, NJ.

Gibbs’ confidence in Jones was further solidified in July at Daytona when Jones scored his first career Monster Energy Series victory. From late June through early August, Jones finished worse than seventh just once in a seven-race stretch – a telltale sign of his progression.

hile Kurt Busch’s season has lacked a defining moment like he had in 2017 with his victory in the Daytona 500, the 2004 champ has been stout enough. Top-10 finishes have certainly come a lot easier than top-five results but, as of press time, Busch had snared three poles – a testament to the kind of speed his Ford has carried on occasion. Busch, who recently turned 40, appears to be as happy both personally and professionally as ever, which certainly can’t hurt in the ultra-competitive world of playoff racing where drivers look for every edge.

ne of the best active drivers still in search of a Monster Energy Series title, Denny Hamlin has struggled this season relative to teammate Kyle Busch – one member of a trio of remarkably superior frontrunners. While Busch has often crushed the competition and made winning look easy at times, Hamlin has shown only rare instances of significant speed and spent many races without making virtually any real noise at all. Being a former championship runner-up and Championship 4 qualifier could give Hamlin a mental edge in the playoffs compared to some of his less seasoned counterparts, however.

Following an offseason move to Team Penske, a Wood Brothers affiliate, the third-generation driver entered 2018 with much higher expectations. hile the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team has been uncharacteristically mediocre this season, Jimmie Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus can never be completely written off in a playoff, crunch-time scenario. After all, they haven’t won seven championships by accident. When it comes to clutch performances, no one is better. “I show up each week thinking that we have the capability to pull it off and still go to Victory Lane,” said Johnson, a winner of 83 NASCAR premier series races at press time. “That is that optimism that I refuse to lose.”

he relatively little known replacement for Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the No. 88 car this season, Alex Bowman started the year with a bang by winning the pole for the Daytona 500. As Hendrick Motorsports has made its cars better, Bowman has become a more consistent top-10 and even occasional top-five performer – which team owner Rick Hendrick has rewarded by extending Bowman’s contract through 2020. While a championship this season is probably a longshot, Bowman seems to possess the abilities and temperament to enjoy a bright future in the sport.
