Prepare for a Texas Throwdown Truex Jr. Is Out for Revenge Against Logano By Jared turner

exas Motor Speedway, host to Race No. 2 of three in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series’ Round of 8, is primed for a Texas-sized showdown with the running of Sunday afternoon’s AAA Texas 500. And if this past weekend’s opening race in the Round of 8 is any indication of what’s to come, there’s no telling what’s liable to go down this weekend in the Lone Star State.

First things first: Martin Truex Jr. has vowed retaliation on Joey Logano for Logano’s last-lap bump-and-run move at Martinsville that resulted in Logano winning and punching a ticket to the Championship 4. Truex, who had been leading going into the final turn after executing a clean pass on Logano, was denied his first short-track win and an automatic berth in the Championship 4. “They won the battle, but he didn’t win the damn war,” Truex said in a clear reference to Texas Preview: november 1, 2018

Logano’s championship pursuit. Asked how he planned to stop Logano from winning the championship, Truex added: “I’m just not going to let him win it. I’m going to win it.” What that means for how Truex will race Logano at Texas and the rest of the season remains to be seen, but this much is certain: Logano isn’t apologizing or backing down. “How he wants to handle it from here, that’s his decision, how he wants to handle that,” Logano said. “My focus can’t be on that. It has to be on winning a championship. There can’t be distractions.” While Logano is already looking ahead to the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, the other seven

championship contenders are looking no further into the future than Sunday’s race at Texas, where someone else could potentially lock up a spot in the Championship 4. If the Championship 4 were set today, the drivers joining Logano to race straight up for the title at Homestead-Miami would be Kyle Busch, Truex and Kevin Harvick. For Chase Elliott, Aric Almirola, Kurt Busch or Clint Bowyer to advance, they will likely need to find a way

to Victory Lane in Sunday’s race at Texas or the following weekend’s elimination race at ISM Raceway. “We are in a hole and probably going to have to win one of these next two races,” said Elliott, who is sixth in the standings and trails Harvick by 31 points for the transfer spot. Harvick, despite currently not needing a win to advance to the Championship Round, feels really good about his chances at Texas — a fast 1.5-

mile track where he finished second in April after leading 87 laps. “I think next week (Texas) is our best bet as we go into the next two races,” Harvick said after finishing 10th at Martinsville. “I look at Texas as our best racetrack. We ran really well there in the spring and won the race there last year, and our mile-and-a-half stuff has been really good.” The driver who beat Harvick at Texas earlier this year is Kyle Busch, who like Harvick,

is well-positioned to join Logano in the Championship 4. This weekend, however, Busch, Harvick and everyone will have to deal with a recently repaved track — which throws just one more wrinkle into an already intriguing scenario coming off the craziness that took place at Martinsville. “Obviously, you hope that with time and age and the asphalt surface that it gets better and more racey,” Busch said of Texas, where

he led 116 laps in the spring. “Not sure we’re really there yet. “It was a good place for us before the repave, and now since the repave I think it’s been a pretty good place for us as well. We’ve run well there, we won there this spring, and hopefully we can continue that sort of momentum there.”

▶▶ Kyle Busch has won multiple races at Texas, his most recent victory coming in the spring of this year when he outhustled Kevin Harvick for the victory. Busch and his No. 18 team could be even better this time around. ▶▶ Kevin Harvick gave Kyle Busch all he could handle at Texas back in April, crossing the finish line in second place and .3 seconds behind the race winner. Despite boasting more wins at Phoenix, Harvick believes Texas is his best shot to get a victory in this round. ▶▶ Martin Truex Jr. comes into Texas with a chip on his shoulder and plenty of extra motivation after being denied a victory at Martinsville thanks to Joey Logano. Rest assured, if Truex doesn’t win this weekend, it won’t be for lack of effort. ▶▶ His ticket to Homestead already punched, Joey Logano has no reason to hold anything back this weekend. The Team Penske driver is a former and fairly recent winner in the Lone Star State, which certainly doesn’t hurt his chances. ▶▶ Prior to Martinsville, Chase Elliott was hands-down the hottest driver on the Monster Energy Series tour. illy Pelotte, engine tuner for Go Fas Racing and driver Matt Debenedetto, was introduced to NASCAR during an afternoon outing at one of the most popular sporting venues in the northeast. “I’m originally from Maine and saw my first NASCAR race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 2007,” Pelotte said. “I was in middle school at the time and I went with my Dad. When I was about nine years old, I started racing go-karts so it was a cool experience to

make it to my first one.” After Pelotte graduated from high school, he continued his education where many crew members begin their motorsports journey. “I went to the NASCAR Technical Institute and graduated from there in 2013,” Pelotte said. “I started working at Roush-Fenway Racing tearing down cars in June of that year. I did that for about a year and a half. (Engine builder) Doug Yates came to me and asked me to represent Roush Yates, NASCAR Tech and all of our affiliates on the road. I spent another year in training and in 2016, began my first full season in the Cup garage as an engine tuner for the No. 32 Cup car.” These days, Pelotte wears several hats for one of NASCAR’s smaller Cup series teams. “I’m the guy that installs the engine at the shop and removes it from the car after a race,” Pelotte said. “I clean all of the parts that are required for it. I have to track mileage and service my own equipment. When I get to the race track, I have to make sure I can pass technical inspection. During practice, I download data looking at engine temperatures, throttle traces to make sure we can get all we can. Texas Preview: november 1, 2018

With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative

decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. This month, Dr. Cormier answered a series of questions about his preferred concussion evaluation tool, the I-Portal Portable Assessment System (I-PAS). ▶▶ What impact do you think the implementation of the I-PAS will have on NASCAR? “We always want to make sure it’s more of a help to NASCAR than a scare. We’re not trying to pull drivers out of the car. We’re trying to help them feel better so they perform better.” ▶▶ How does the I-PAS compare with other concussion tests? “From the standard of detecting and diagnosing oculomotor, vestibular and reaction time deficiencies, it takes the subjectivity out of the hands of the examiner. spotlight going on in the brain without the subjectivity of some exams, or without an athlete trying to trick a certain test.” ▶▶ Will a driver go through baseline testing at the start of the season so that the test will detect discrepancies from those metrics head impacts? “You don’t need any baseline testing. The system is able to track and develop a data bank of what’s normal for people of a certain age group. It can alter some of the parameters. When dealing with racecar drivers, it considers that their reflex timing and reaction timing is going to be quicker than the average population. Once you establish a normal value for a particular sport, you can test and see variances when there’s some sort of issue.” ▶▶ How is the test administered? “You put these goggles on, and you have the ability to make sure your vision is completely clear. You can see the stimuli. Then you follow the stimuli. It’s testing the functionality of smooth pursuits and looking for stagnants. Blurred vision isn’t a part of it. It will find what’s going on in the microscopic function of the brain. Say you’re having difficulty looking to your left. If we find that’s where the deficit is occurring, then we can focus on those areas to rehab and get where they need to be.” ▶▶ When do you expect to administer this test to racecar drivers? After races? “This isn’t necessarily going to take the place of a clinician’s medical acumen. If a driver didn’t lose consciousness and his car wasn’t altered, he’s going to continue to drive. A driver won’t come off the track for testing. If the car flips or collides, then I see the utility in using this. IndyCar has already started to use this at the track. For NASCAR and ARCA, from what we’ve been told, it doesn’t look like it will be an issue, but we haven’t been given the green light yet.”

n March 5, 2006, Kurt Busch, driver of the Team Penske No. 2 Ford, led only 33 laps of the Food City 500 to score his lone victory of the season. The Las Vegas native sealed the deal by taking the lead with four laps remaining over Matt Kenseth, driver of the Roush Fenway Racing Ford. It was Busch’s fifth win at Bristol of 15-career victories and first of his six-year tenure with team owner Roger Penske. Since that day, Busch has doubled his win count to 30. Busch used the short track bump and run on Kenseth, making him loose before

dropping underneath him to take the lead. Kevin Harvick, driver of the RCR Enterprises Chevrolet, took the second position as Kenseth worked to recover and not spin. A shoving match developed between them after the race after Kenseth spun Gordon thinking he had been mistreated by Gordon on the track. Busch has proven he is a master on Bristol’s high banks. “This track brings out the best in everybody,” Busch said after his victory there this past August. “Just to come here and feel that Saturday night atmosphere and racing under the lights, it brings you back to your roots. It just matters to win. It’s all about winning. It’s great to win on the old one and the new one. It’s been a while.”

comprehensive hose work for a new barge. PIRTEK’s shipbuilding customer installed a powerful hydraulic engine that operates “spuds,” steel pilings that drive down and pierce the lake floor. That means hoses, lot of them, to provide all of that heft. “The customer literally created everything – this entire barge – from scratch,” said Jose Vega, technical inside sales representative for the PIRTEK location in Valley View, Ohio. “They needed us to install all of the hoses that connect to the engine. PIRTEK provides industrial hose replacement service on site. When hydraulic or pneumatic equipment needs hose work, a technician is available 24 hours a day to perform the job from a Mobile Service Vehicle. While a large portion of PIRTEK’s business is in manufacturing, construction and the rental equipment industry, maritime service calls are fairly common in port locations. Hydraulic power has many applications on ships, including control systems, deck equipment, maintenance, steering and others. The barge PIRTEK worked on is called a “walking spud.” These vessels are engaged in a number of heavy jobs on the water, such as dredging projects. Accordingly, they are often equipped with cranes or excavating shovels. A regular spud barge uses its pilings to simply moor itself in place as it performs

its heavy work. A walking spud has an extra advantage: Its pilings actually provide some locomotion. “The hydraulic cylinders allow the barge to walk along the bottom while working, right through the mud,” Vega said. “It’s an ingenious concept.” Here’s how it works: A piling plunges into the lake floor and hydraulic power then pushes on it, laterally. Because the piling is rooted, the barge itself moves over the piling via a cutout section. The walking spud’s prime advantage is the ability to reposition itself and move around without the aid of a tugboat. “It takes quite a bit of force to move the barge,” Vega said. “We put in a lot of hoses with inch-and-a-half diameters. How the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs Work by jared turner

ixteen drivers qualified for the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, with entry based on having a win or their position in the standings following the 26-race regular season While baseline point totals are reset equally heading into the playoffs, a driver earns five playoff points for every race win, and one playoff point for every stage win, during the regular season. Drivers can continue to amass playoff points once the playoffs commence, adding to their regular season totals. A driver’s playoff points carry over to each new round – except the Championship Round – provided he is still championship-eligible. The driver leading the point standings at the end of the regular season starts the playoffs with an additional 15 playoff points. In fact, the top-10 drivers in points after the regular season are all awarded playoff points on a descending scale. The number of playoff drivers in contention for the championship decreases after every three playoff races, from 16 to start the playoffs; 12 after playoff Race No. 3; eight after playoff Race No. 6; and four after playoff Race No. 9.

A win by a championship-eligible driver in any playoff race automatically clinches the winning driver a spot in the next round. The positions for each round that aren’t filled based on wins in the previous round are filled based on point totals at the end of the previous round. The first three races of the playoffs are known as the Round of 16 and are held this year at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Richmond Raceway and the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway, respectively. The ROVAL, a new 17-turn road course where the field of championship-eligible drivers decreases to 12, is the first of three playoff elimination races. The next three races make up the Round of 12 and are held at Dover International Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway and Kansas Speedway, respectively. At Kansas, the playoff field is whittled to eight. Martinsville Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway and ISM Raceway make up the Round of 8, which culminates with four drivers leaving Arizona in title contention. or many NASCAR fans, the playoffs are undoubtedly the most exciting time of the year. For the drivers in pursuit of a championship, no time is more stressful. Stressors aside, there are many reasons to love the playoffs – especially in NASCAR’s premier division, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Here are the top five reasons:

▶▶ THE SCHEDULE SHAKEUP: The Monster Energy Series’ Round of 16 has an all-new look this season. Out are Chicagoland Speedway (which hosted the playoff opener from 2011-2017), New Hampshire Motor Speedway (which lost its fall race date) and Dover International Speedway (now the first race in the Round of 12). This year, the Round of 16 consists of races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Richmond Raceway and a new 17-turn road course formally dubbed the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway. ▶▶ THE CHAMPIONSHIP 4: It’s one race featuring four championship contenders all on equal points footing, with no bonus points up for grabs. The first driver among the four finalists to cross the finish line when the checkered waves at Homestead-Miami Speedway is the Monster Energy Series champion. Does it really get any better than this? NASCAR knocked a home run with its implementation of a winnertake-all Championship Race in 2014. Expect 2018 to be no exception.

▶▶ TALLADEGA, AKA ‘THE WILD CARD’: Want intense racing? Try a race at wild, wacky and notoriously unpredictable Talladega Superspeedway situated smack dab in the middle of the Monster Energy Series playoffs. Talladega, a 2.66mile track widely considered the most treacherous of all venues on the Monster Energy Series tour, is the second race in the Round of 12 and has consistently proven to be a game-changer in terms of which drivers ultimately advance to the Round of 8.

▶▶ THE ELIMINATION RACES: If you like witnessing aggression, tune in or buy a ticket for any of the three elimination races in which the Monster Energy Series playoff field will be reduced by four drivers. This year’s elimination races are being run at the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Kansas Speedway and ISM Raceway, respectively. All three tracks are poised to crush some drivers’ dreams while propelling others further down the path to a possible championship.

▶▶ THE SURPRISES: Almost without fail, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs produce a major surprise or two. In 2014 – the first year of the elimination-style format and winner-take-all Championship Race – Ryan Newman came one position short of the championship, despite going the whole season without a win. The following year, Martin Truex Jr. – then considered a major underdog – surprised almost everyone by reaching the Championship 4 with a single-car team. Who will be the biggest surprise of this year?
