Everyone Loves “Throwback” Weekend By jared turner

niversal agreement on any topic is virtually impossible to achieve these days. But when it comes to NASCAR’s annual “Throwback” weekend just held for the fourth consecutive year at Darlington Raceway, the concept couldn’t be more widely embraced. From the retro paint schemes to the old-school firesuits and hairdos, there’s nothing not to love. “When we added in all this retro stuff a few years ago, it’s like a spark that just reignited this track as just being stupid cool,” said Sunday’s race winner, Brad Keselowski. Former driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., now part of the NASCAR on NBC broadcast team, shared the sentiment. “We all debate about what @NASCAR needs to resurrect from its past,” the third-generation driver tweeted. “In the Darlington Throwback weekend, we are living one of those fantasies. I still can’t believe that we have a weekend specifically dedicated to the sports past, at its most historic speedway.” Darlington Rearview: september 4, 2018

Kyle Larson Needs To Work On Being A Better Closer

quipped with hands-down the fastest car in Sunday night’s race, Kyle Larson easily won the first two stages of the Bojangles’ Southern 500. Yet, when the checkered flag waved at Darlington, Larson had to settle for third-place. This after leading 284 of 367 laps but losing the lead under the race’s final caution period when quick pit work by the No. 2 Team Penske group put Brad Keselowski out front for the restart. With Keselowski controlling the restart, which came with 19 laps to go, the 2012 Monster Energy Series champion pulled away from Larson to score the win. Larson, meanwhile, was unable to hold off Keselowski’s teammate, Joey Logano, who came home second. In addition to Larson having not won in 2018, this marked the fourth time in the Chip Ganassi Racing driver’s career that he’s led 200 or more laps but failed to go to Victory Lane.

The “Big 3” Suddenly Look Less Than Invincible

evin Harvick, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr.—the three drivers who have been head and shoulders above the rest of competition in 2018—suddenly look almost human. After combining to win 17 of the season’s first 23 races, the dynamic trio has been shut out of Victory Lane in consecutive starts for the first time all season. So is it possible that now, with the playoffs right around the corner, the Big 3 have lost some of their edge? “Sure, they should be scared,” second-place Darlington finisher Joey Logano said. “We’re coming for them. They’re still really strong teams, but the fact that we can keep up and race them and pass them, that felt good. That’s been about a year since I passed one of those cars. So that feels really good the last couple races. I didn’t know I could do that anymore. It felt good.”

or the majority of 2018, Team Penske has competed in the shadow of Stewart-Haas Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing and Furniture Row Racing. This may be changing, however. After an impressive 1-2 finish in Sunday’s Bojangles’ Southern 500, the organization coowned and founded by legendary motorsports tycoon Roger Penske is flexing some muscle. With one race to go until the Monster Energy Series playoffs commence, it’s looking as if Team Penske drivers Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano could slip into the title discussion. “I hope so,” Logano said. “It’s so hard to say. … I think some of the speed is there.” Darlington winner Keselowski seemed less convinced, after notching the company’s second victory of the season. “Winning is great, but there’s not a lot of carryover from Darlington, and we still have a lot to work on and improve to be considered a favorite for the playoffs,” Keselowski said. 1 Brad Keselowski Has Figured Out How To Win A Marquee Race

rior to Sunday’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington, Brad Keselowski had won 24 Monster Energy Series races and even captured a championship in NASCAR’s premier division. Notably absent from his resume, however, was a victory in one of the sport’s “crown-jewel” races. Keselowski’s win in the Southern 500 fixes that. “It means a hell of a lot,” Keselowski said after leading the final 22 laps. “It would mean more to me when it means less to others, because I’ll have a chance to reflect on it. But right now, it is special. It’s pretty damned cool. This is such a special racetrack. It always has been, and I think it always will be. This win is something that I’ll carry forever. It’s probably the biggest win of my career. I’m just really, really thankful, really, really proud, thankful of the team effort that it took to win this race.”

Rusty Wallace Casts Unique Shadow on Brad Keselowski’s Darlington Win By Jared Turner

One on the neatest moments of the Darlington race weekend occurred late Sunday night after the race when NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace — having just wrapped up his duties as an in-race announcer for Motor Racing Network — paid a visit to Victory Lane to celebrate with his former team and driver Brad Keselowski. Wallace, who drove for Team Penske from 1990 through his final season of 2005, never managed to win in his 43 starts at Darlington Raceway. So seeing Keselowski do it — with Wallace’s old car number and while sporting one of Wallace’s old paint schemes — was understandably pleasing to the 1989 champion of NASCAR’s premier

series. Keselowski, for his part, was thrilled to share the limelight with the man who brought the No. 2 car to prominence some two decades ago. “He’s a legend in the sport, he’s a Hall of Famer, so you can’t deny what he’s done for our sport,” Keselowski said. “And it’s great to be able to honor him, and the best way to honor him is to make the car run good and to win the race, and that just, of course, is going to make that car even more immortal than it is already. So that’s very special. I don’t know what we’re going to do with this car, but I hope they’ll leave it together and park it somewhere special. It would be a really cool gift for Rusty and his family if we can do that.” Great idea, Brad.

Kudos to NASCAR for waiting out the weather Sunday’s race started about an hour later than scheduled due to lightning in the Darlington area. As tempting as it might have been to drop the green flag with the track being dry, NASCAR did right by playing it safe and making sure all lightning — something far more dangerous than rain — had ceased.

spotlight Series, so he was pleased earlier this year when NASCAR acquired the stock car series, reaffirming its commitment to the next generation of racers. “Overall, it’s a very good thing for both atmospheres,” Cormier said. “It brings more eyes to the ARCA Series and provides the drivers with better equipment, technology and oversight. NASCAR brings attention to some of the rising stars of ARCA that will be superstars once they make it to the Cup Series.” Cormier makes himself available to all ARCA Series drivers at races, and also accepts calls from any driver who might require further insight or advice. “Before each of the races I’m able to attend, I walk from the start to finish and shake every driver’s hand, wish them luck and let them know I’m here,” Cormier said. “I think that makes them feel more secure and supported. We let them know, if there’s some sort of injury, ARCA has a close circle of support.” Cormier mentioned ARCA drivers like Sheldon Creed, Zane Smith, Natalie Decker

and Chandler Smith as some of the future stars of the sport. The doctor met with many drivers and their parents in Daytona during February to review racing-specific injuries and the protocols for rehab. Cormier is also a strong supporter of the I-PAS technology for concussion testing, a series of high-quality diagnostic tests to evaluate patients with symptoms of dizziness and/or balance disorders, especially those associated with medical conditions such as concussions, migraines or BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo). “It’s a system that can detect brain injuries and concussions inside 90 seconds and up to 10 minutes,” Cormier said. “It takes the subjectivity out of the examiner, and cannot be manipulated like some other tests.” Cormier is also working with the After the Impact Fund, a nonprofit that facilitates custom treatment plans for veterans and athletes with traumatic injuries. ATIF provides a clear path to healing for these individuals and their families.

or NASCAR drivers, it’s personality and character. For Off Axis Paint founder and owner Greg Stumpff, it’s long days, intense labor and even the occasional sleepless night. But it’s all so worth it. Based out of a 5,000-square-foot facility equipped with a state-of-theart airbrush booth, Stumpff and his team of talented helmet designers work

tirelessly to deliver quality products that have gained notoriety throughout the motorsports world. The company’s growing clientele includes the likes of 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Martin Truex Jr., two-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Matt Crafton and retired fanfavorite Mark Martin. When Stumpff painted his first NASCAR helmet in 2010

Stumpff promptly pulled three all-nighters and handdelivered the helmet the day before the race. “That was the most hours I’ve ever put in a helmet in that short of time,” Stumpff said. “It was just the coolest and most rewarding thing in the world to see him win his first championship and capture their story on the helmet.” In addition to requiring the driver’s approval and being in full compliance with NASCAR safety standards, each helmet produced by Off Axis must

get a full sign-off from the driver’s primary sponsor for that particular race. “Sometimes we nail it the first time but sometimes when you’re working with a new sponsor for that first time, you might go through five to 10 renderings,” Stumpff said, noting that his team designs up to eight unique helmets annually for some drivers. “It just kind of depends on how much they trust you. If you do that first helmet and knock it out of the park and they love it, it’s a lot easier for the years to come.”

TO WHAT DOES GREG Stumpff attribute the growth and success of Off Axis Paint? One key, he believes, is location. In 2012, Stumpff moved his business from Missouri to North Carolina. Today, the company is based in Mooresville, North Carolina — the heart of NASCAR country. “Drivers can actually stop in and see the helmet being done or even help on it,” Stumpff said. “I’ve had Chris Buescher and Justin Allgaier and Noah Gragson in the booth painting their own helmet. I think they enjoy seeing the level of difficulty involved, and they have even more respect for the process after they do something like that. It’s a very personal thing to get your helmet painted.” Another factor, in Stumpff’s view, is Anest Iwata — his longtime preferred choice of airbrush. “I’ve used about every other airbrush I could possibly use, and Iwata is the best product on the market,” Stumpff said. “I’m not just saying that because I use it every day; it’s because I’ve tried them all. I’ve been airbrushing since I was 14 years old, and I’m 31 now, so literally half my life I’ve had an airbrush in my hand five to seven days a week, and 95 percent of that time it has been Iwata.”

n April 6, 1986, Rusty Wallace, driver of the No. 27 Blue Max Racing Pontiac owned by Raymond Beadle, used his short-track talents to score his firstcareer Winston Cup victory at Bristol Motor Speedway. Wallace led the final 101 laps of the Valleydale Meats 500 and gradually increased his lead in dominant fashion. Wallace sealed the deal by holding off Ricky Rudd, driver of the No. 15 Bud Moore Engineering Ford, by 10.6 seconds to give Pontiac its first NASCAR victory in more than two years.

The Fenton, Mo. native was in his second full season of competing in NASCAR’s premier series. The win was also the first in NASCAR competition for crew chief Barry Dodson, a former employee of Petty Enterprises. Wallace excelled at the high-banked Tennessee short track because of a wealth of experience on similar tracks while racing and winning in the Midwest on ASA (American Speed Association) circuit. Wallace went on to win the Winston Cup championship three only years later in 1989 as well as 55 victories before his retirement from driving in NASCAR in 2005. “A lot of people have doubted that this team because we haven’t win in a while,” Dodson said that day, according to the Forty Years of Stock Car Racing book series. “But anyone who has won 200 short track races is a winner.”

much more yet to come. “The goal is always to find ways to make the data more useful to the analyst or the engineer that needs to use it to do their job,” Infanti said. “It’s not about using data analysis to replace the role of somebody on the team. It’s about allowing them to spend less time focused on figuring out where the data is and pulling it together on spreadsheets, and more time focused on actual decision-making during the race.”

“When you see ‘The King’ walking through your offices with his trademark cowboy hat and the sunglasses, it’s hard not to get excited about that,” WWT senior engagement manager Chris Infanti said. “Even the people who might not have been NASCAR fans and don’t really know the specifics, they see that something cool is going on and they know Richard Petty.” Not as widely known but equally aligned with the company’s brand is driver Bubba Wallace, a 24-year- old Monster Energy Cup Series rookie who has all the makings of a future NASCAR star. “It’s just been really easy to work with these guys,” Infanti said. “There hasn’t been much of a feeling out process or, ‘Are we on the same page?’ It’s kind of like we’ve been working together as one team, and Bubba’s been great, too. He’s been to some of our offices and we’ve done the meet-andgreet type events and he’s really been awesome to work with, in particular. We found a team that really syncs up with WWT and our core values.”
