Brad Keselowski Peaked Too Soon By jared turner

oming into the playoffs, Brad Keselowski was riding high from back-to-back victories in two of the sport’s crown-jewel events — the Southern 500 at Darlington and the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis. Then, the playoffs commenced and Keselowski captured the playoff opener at Las Vegas and became the first driver to punch a ticket to the Round of 12. But that’s where his hot streak ended. After finishing ninth and 31st, respectively, in the other two races in the Round of 16, Keselowski began the Round of 12 with a 14th-place finish at Dover that was followed by a 27th-place finish at Talladega. Consequently, Keselowski arrived for the elimination race at Kansas on the wrong side of the cutline. While Keselowski managed to finish sixth at Kansas, it wasn’t enough to overcome his points deficit. So, all this begs the question: Did Keselowski peak too soon? It certainly seems that way. 4 Kansas was Kevin Harvick’s Race to Lose …and He Lost it

rom the earliest moments of Sunday’s race at Kansas, it was obvious that Kevin Harvick had one of the cars to beat. And as the race wore on, it became obvious that Harvick’s No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford was, in fact, the car to beat. But instead of completing the Kansas season sweep and going to Victory Lane for the eighth time this season, Harvick finished 12th after NASCAR busted him for speeding on pit road in the final stage. The mistake forced Harvick to serve a stop-and-go penalty that for all practical purposes eliminated him from contention for the victory. Despite leading 76 laps and scoring a stage victory, Harvick left Kansas disappointed. “Our Ford was really fast and leading the race there, and I got a speeding penalty,” Harvick said. “That was my fault. I tried to get a little too much and wound up going too fast.”

Ryan Blaney Blew It and Took the Blame

or much of Sunday’s race at Kansas, it looked like Ryan Blaney — one of four drivers on the wrong side of the cutline coming into the day — had a great shot to defy the odds and actually advance to the Round of 8. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. And Blaney had no one to blame but himself. Running third on lap 204 of 267, Blaney endured a costly setback when his No. 12 Ford bounced off the wall when he charged into a turn a bit too aggressively. The second-generation driver was never the same from that point on, losing several positions before ultimately crossing the finish line in seventh. “Obviously, it was a mistake,” Blaney said of his brush with the wall. “I was trying to work hard to catch those guys, and I pushed too hard and got in the fence. 2 Kyle Larson Deserves an ‘A’ for Effort

ven before arriving at Kansas, Kyle Larson faced an uphill climb in his quest to reach the Round of 8. By the time the green flag waved, the Chip Ganassi Racing driver was in an even more precarious spot as a result of a mistake in Friday practice that left his No. 42 Chevrolet with significant damage. Larson also qualified poorly and started at the rear of the field in a backup car, leaving little reason for optimism about his chances of winning — his only plausible path for advancing. But despite everything, Larson enjoyed a terrific Sunday, charging to a third-place finish and nearly passing runner-up finisher Kyle Busch on the final lap. Based on Larson’s speed, he probably could have even run down race winner Chase Elliott with a few more laps. Regardless, it was a valiant effort for Larson, who delivered an allaround applause-worthy performance.

1 Chase Elliott is on Fire

hat can you say about Chase Elliott? It’s truly remarkable that this young driver — shut out of Victory Lane in his first 98 starts in NASCAR’s premier series — has now won three of the past 11 races. Elliott’s victory in Sunday’s elimination race at Kansas Speedway not only earned him an automatic berth in the Round of 8, but it also solidified the Hendrick Motorsports driver’s standing as the driver most likely to join this year’s “Big 3” of Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. in the Championship 4. If Elliott can advance to Homestead-Miami Speedway for the winner-take-all championship race, there’s no telling what might happen. While the secondgeneration driver would almost certainly arrive for the South Florida finale as an underdog, the fact is that — at least for right now — no team or driver in the Monster Energy Series garage is performing any better. t first glance, Chase Elliott has all the ingredients necessary to become NASCAR’s next big superstar. Youth. Good looks. Popularity. Pedigree. Speed. A great team behind him. So what, if anything, is Elliott missing that he needs to become hands-down the sport’s most popular driver?

Chase Elliott doesn’t seem to have the “it factor” to attract fans.

In short: It’s the “it factor.” While Elliott is extremely well-spoken and mild-mannered, there’s nothing about the way he carries himself that is particularly alluring. To say it a bit more bluntly, Elliott has a personality that’s akin to watching paint dry — and that’s probably putting it too kindly. I’M JUST SAYIN’ do to take his popularity to the next level? Simply put: He’s going to need to work on sounding a little less programmed and a little more authentic, which means being a little less politically correct in how he answers questions or addresses fans of the sport. Remember last year when Elliott, then still in search of his first victory, refused to back down to veteran Denny Hamlin when the two drivers butted heads on more than one occasion? At some point, Elliott needs to again remind people that he’s willing to get in there and mix it up, and that he’s not afraid of controversy. Only then will he be able to reach his full potential on the popularity meter.

in 635 NASCAR Cup Series starts. His most successful seasons were during an incredible four-year span in which he claimed backto-back championships (1956 and ’57) and finished second in points twice (1955 and ’58). Baker’s first championship came while driving for owner Carl Kiekhaefer, who had assembled the first multi-car team in NASCAR while also blazing a trail by using his race cars to the promote his primary business. Baker’s second title was earned in his own cars.

Baker stepped away from driving following the fall 1976 event at Charlotte Motor Speedway. After his retirement, Baker owned and operated the Buck Baker Racing School. Baker died on April 14, 2002, at the age of 83, and he was posthumously inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2013.

Keeping it dirty PIRTEK helps monster truck event stay on schedule

hat’s a monster truck competition without the proper mix of dirt underneath those whirling tires? The New Orleans Monster Jam was at hand and the equipment at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome was preparing the ground accordingly for the loud spectacle – lots of added soil and rearranging of earth. Then a front-end loader involved in the work blew a hydraulic hose. The rental company that provided the equipment called PIRTEK to get the preparation back on track. “It was an interesting chain of events,” said Carl Prince, owner

spotlight of PIRTEK Elmwood in Harahan, LA. “I’m happy we could help them out.” PIRTEK Elmwood is only about 10 minutes from the New Orleans city limits in an industrial park. A technician drove out immediately to the Superdome to provide custom, onsite hose replacement for the idled equipment. Thousands of fans pack venues around the country to watch these massive vehicles roar, fly up ramps and pancake cars beneath their tires. Monster Truck Jam is a popular competition that has been going on every year since 1992. PIRTEK Elmwood’s Mobile Service Vehicle drove inside the Superdome right over the malleable mixture being prepped for the event. “The driver wondered if he might get stuck,” Prince said. “But it was OK, he didn’t have a problem.” PIRTEK provides hydraulic and industrial hose replacement sales and services. There are 77 PIRTEK franchises and a fleet of Mobile Service Vehicles throughout the United States. Globally, PIRTEK has more than 400 locations and 2,000 Mobile Service Vehicles in 23 countries. The PIRTEK technician made it to the

Superdome in 30 minutes and had the equipment fully operational in less than an hour. PIRTEK Elmwood remained on standby that weekend to provide services in case another hose issue arose during the competition. Since completing the service call, PIRTEK Elmwood has gone on to perform several other jobs for the rental company that furnished the front-end loader. “It was a good opportunity for us,” Prince said. Prince moved from his native Florida to live in the New Orleans area, where he’s been for the past 30 years or so. Before his PIRTEK ownership, he worked many years for a supply company that helped other businesses manage their inventories after Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill. The doors of his franchise opened in 2016, and he has pursued business from the oil market, port and marine companies, petrochemical plants and the manufacturing sector. But the job in the Superdome, Prince said, was one of the most interesting to date. “It gave the guys something to talk about,” he said.

This month, Dr. Cormier answered a series of questions about his preferred concussion evaluation tool, the I-Portal Portable Assessment System (I-PAS). ▶▶ What impact do you think the implementation of the I-PAS will have on NASCAR? “We always want to make sure it’s more of a help to NASCAR than a scare. We’re not trying to pull drivers out of the car. We’re trying to help them feel better so they perform better.” ▶▶ How does the I-PAS compare with other concussion tests? “From the standard of detecting and diagnosing oculomotor, vestibular and reaction time deficiencies, it takes the subjectivity out of the hands of the examiner. spotlight going on in the brain without the subjectivity of some exams, or without an athlete trying to trick a certain test.” ▶▶ Will a driver go through baseline testing at the start of the season so that the test will detect discrepancies from those metrics head impacts? “You don’t need any baseline testing. The system is able to track and develop a data bank of what’s normal for people of a certain age group. It can alter some of the parameters. When dealing with racecar drivers, it considers that their reflex timing and reaction timing is going to be quicker than the average population. Once you establish a normal value for a particular sport, you can test and see variances when there’s some sort of issue.” ▶▶ How is the test administered? “You put these goggles on, and you have the ability to make sure your vision is completely clear. You can see the stimuli. Then you follow the stimuli. It’s testing the functionality of smooth pursuits and looking for stagnants. Blurred vision isn’t a part of it. It will find what’s going on in the microscopic function of the brain. Say you’re having difficulty looking to your left. If we find that’s where the deficit is occurring, then we can focus on those areas to rehab and get where they need to be.” ▶▶ When do you expect to administer this test to racecar drivers? After races? “This isn’t necessarily going to take the place of a clinician’s medical acumen. If a driver didn’t lose consciousness and his car wasn’t altered, he’s going to continue to drive. A driver won’t come off the track for testing. If the car flips or collides, then I see the utility in using this. IndyCar has already started to use this at the track. For NASCAR and ARCA, from what we’ve been told, it doesn’t look like it will be an issue, but we haven’t been given the green light yet.”

n Feb. 28, 2010, Jimmie Johnson, driver of the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, won the Shelby American 400-mile race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The El Cajun, Calif. native sealed the deal by passing teammate Jeff Gordon for the win with 17 laps remaining. Gordon led 218 of the 267 laps in his No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. He took two tires instead of four on his final pit stop and was unable to hold off Johnson when the checkered flag waved. Johnson took four tires

and restarted in fourth and had no problem putting Gordon behind him. The victory was the 49th of Johnson’s then nine-year Cup career and second of six wins that season. “I’m really proud of the car we brought to the track,” Johnson said. “We had to work on it some through the race. But, you know, it was so fast on the long haul that we could make up ground from the 20th place starting position we had. “The four tires I think helped us more than anything. I was behind Jeff, chasing him. I’d been chasing him all day and wasn’t sure I’d get by him.
