ith one of three races down in the Round of 8, half of the remaining championship hopefuls have a tall hill to climb. With Joey Logano having punched a ticket to Homestead by virtue of his Martinsville win, and the “Big 3” of Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. seemingly primed to pick up the three remaining Championship 4 berths due to the vast number of playoff points they’ve amassed this season, the odds are stacked against Kurt Busch, Aric Almirola, Clint Bowyer or Chase Elliott moving beyond the Round of 8. For any one of these drivers to advance, he will almost certainly have to win either next weekend’s race at Texas or the following weekend’s elimination race at ISM Raceway. That’s because — barring an unforeseen set of circumstances — the points gap between the “Big 3” and everyone besides Logano is going to be too great to overcome.

Joey Logano Is A Legitimate Title Contender

or most of the season, Joey Logano has flown under the radar in terms of being considered a serious championship threat. That all changed on Sunday at Martinsville when the Team Penske driver notched his second win of 2018 and in so doing became the first driver to solidify a berth in the Championship 4. While Logano won’t go to Homestead as the favorite to win it all, he has one obvious advantage over whomever he faces in the Championship 4: He can use the next two weekends to fine-tune and prepare for the finale, while his competition has to focus all of their efforts on just making sure they get to Homestead. Regardless of which three drivers Logano goes up against in South Florida, it also doesn’t hurt him that this will be his third appearance in a Championship 4 race. In other words: Stage fright won’t be an issue.

3 Roger Penske Is Standing By Joey Logano

sked to weigh in on Joey Logano’s controversial last-lap bumpand-run maneuver on Martin Truex Jr., team owner Roger Penske made his feelings abundantly clear during the post-race press conference with the winning team owner. “I think Joey drove a great race,” Penske said. “He didn’t knock him off the racetrack. It was side-by-side racing at the end. You could see that. Nobody lifted. I want to make sure people know my position. I thought it was fair, I thought it was square, and Joey deserved the win.” Penske also took umbrage with Truex’s statement that Logano’s move on the final lap was a cheap shot. “He’s a racer and should know better than to say that,” Penske said of Truex. “That’s as clean a shot as you can have in a race like this. 2 No Mr. Nice Guy For Truex, Pearn

o say Martin Truex Jr. didn’t take too kindly to Joey Logano’s lastlap bump at Martinsville would be an understatement. Truex, typically one of the more mild-mannered drivers in the garage, was downright furious — and showed his anger by running into Logano on the cooldown lap, and then vowing to make sure the Team Penske driver doesn’t win the championship. “(Logano) won the battle, but he ain’t winning the damn war,” a visibly angry Truex said. “I’m just not going to let him win it. I’m going to win it.” Truex wasn’t the only one from the No. 78 camp who was irate about Logano’s moves on the final lap. Truex’s crew chief, Cole Pearn, was equally livid, and made his feelings known by getting up in the face of Logano crew chief Todd Gordon on pit road after the race. “I mean, whatever,” Pearn said. “It’s just tough to take.”

emember back in 2015 when Joey Logano took a lot of heat for wrecking Matt Kenseth while the two battled for the win in the final laps of a playoff race at Kansas Speedway? Well, Sunday’s race at Martinsville proved that the Joey Logano of 2018 isn’t much different from the Joey Logano of three years ago. Rather than being content to finish second, Logano went for broke in the final turn on the final lap, shoving Martin Truex Jr. out of the way to take the victory and punch a ticket to Championship 4. Later, despite Truex’s insistence that Logano played dirty, the Team Penske driver showed no remorse for his aggression. “Some are going to like it, and haters are going to hate a little bit, but I’m a hard racer,” Logano said. “I don’t think that’s a secret to anyone. We’re here to win a championship this year.”

Fair Play Joey Logano’s Late-Race Bump Was Totally Acceptable By Jared Turner

fter getting dumped by Joey Logano on the final lap at Martinsville, Martin Truex Jr. had every reason to be upset. After all, he had just been denied his first-ever win at a short track and, more importantly, missed out on an automatic berth in the Championship 4. Throw in the fact that Truex had come from the back of the field and cleanly passed Logano for the lead moments before Logano all but ran over him, and you can clearly understand why Truex — the reigning series champion — would be lessthan-pleased. But, here’s the thing: Should Truex really have expected any different in that situation? And, moreover, would he not have done the same thing in the final corner

if the roles had been reversed? Martinsville, a .526-mile short track notorious for all manner of bumping and bruising and banging among competitors, has always been and always will be one of those tracks where knocking someone out of the way to win is almost universally accepted. Knowing that Martinsville was his best and likely only chance to punch a ticket to the Championship 4, who wouldn’t race with the aggression that Logano raced Truex? After all, at the end of the day, Logano must answer to his team owner, Roger Penske, and a tier-1 sponsor in Shell Pennzoil that is shelling out millions to have their logos emblazoned across the sides and hood of his No. 22 car. Here’s the bottom line: No one can blame Truex for being ticked off about Sunday’s outcome, but neither can anyone really fault Logano for doing what he had to do to win and advance. What Logano did is called short-track racing. It was nothing more and nothing less. And if Truex was totally honest with himself and everyone else, he would acknowledge this and move on.

NASCAR Cup Series championship in 1983 with DiGard Racing. Yates became a NASCAR team owner in 1988 after purchasing the assets of Harry Ranier’s operation. spotlight going on in the brain without the subjectivity of some exams, or without an athlete trying to trick a certain test.” ▶▶ Will a driver go through baseline testing at the start of the season so that the test will detect discrepancies from those metrics head impacts? “You don’t need any baseline testing. The system is able to track and develop a data bank of what’s normal for people of a certain age group. It can alter some of the parameters. When dealing with racecar drivers, it considers that their reflex timing and reaction timing is going to be quicker than the average population. Once you establish a normal value for a particular sport, you can test and see variances when there’s some sort of issue.” ▶▶ How is the test administered? “You put these goggles on, and you have the ability to make sure your vision is completely clear. You can see the stimuli. Then you follow the stimuli. It’s testing the functionality of smooth pursuits and looking for stagnants. Blurred vision isn’t a part of it. It will find what’s going on in the microscopic function of the brain. Say you’re having difficulty looking to your left. If we find that’s where the deficit is occurring, then we can focus on those areas to rehab and get where they need to be.” ▶▶ When do you expect to administer this test to racecar drivers? After races? “This isn’t necessarily going to take the place of a clinician’s medical acumen. If a driver didn’t lose consciousness and his car wasn’t altered, he’s going to continue to drive. A driver won’t come off the track for testing. If the car flips or collides, then I see the utility in using this. IndyCar has already started to use this at the track. For NASCAR and ARCA, from what we’ve been told, it doesn’t look like it will be an issue, but we haven’t been given the green light yet.”

What a Sweet Accomplishment Allison Wins 1983 Cup Series title BY BEN WHITE

n Nov. 20, 1983, Bobby Allison, driver of the No. 22 Digard Racing Buick, collected his lone Winston Cup championship by finishing ninth in the Winston Western 500 at Riverside (Calif.) International Raceway. Ironically, Allison led only one of 119 laps on the 2.6-mile road course, in part due to fuel issues that were later discovered to have come from sugar someone had poured in his gas tank. After a hard fought season long battle,

Allison bested reigning champion Darrell Waltrip, driver of the Junior Johnson and Associates Buick, for the title. Waltrip’s sixth-place finish was not enough to erase Allison’s 47-point lead after the 30th and final race. Allison waved to the crowd during the cool down lap and rolled into the garage area just as rain began to fall. Allison exited his car and was met by a large crowd of crew members and supporters. “What an incredible feeling to finally win the Cup series championship that year,” Allison said. “On several occasions, I was close to winning the championship with various teams but just couldn’t make it happen. Then in 1983, it all came together with Gary Nelson as my crew chief and Robert Yates building engines. We were able to overcome all of the obstacles, even the mysterious sugar we found in the gas tank after we got back to the shop.” Martinsville rearview: october 29, 2018
