Kyle Larson Was Fed Up With His Talladega Performance By jared turner

ne driver facing long odds of advancing to the next playoff round is Kyle Larson, who sits 11th among the dozen remaining title contenders heading into the elimination race at Kansas Speedway. Regardless of whether Larson ultimately manages to advance or not, this much is certain: The Chip Ganassi Racing driver was less than happy with his car’s performance at Talladega, where he finished 11th but struggled mightily. “We just had a terrible race car and were really slow all weekend,” said Larson, whose biggest setback in the race was a tire failure that sent him for a spin. “We were able to salvage a decent finish, but the Fords are so fast here and can rack up a lot of stage points. Even when they have a bad day, they still gain points on us. It is what it is. We’ll just go to Kansas and try and win.”

Truex, Keselowski Are In Surprisingly Precarious Positions

wo drivers who have been on the shortlist of favorites to win the 2018 Monster Energy Series championship find themselves in extremely precarious positions after Sunday’s second of three races in the Round of 12. Brad Keselowski, who entered the playoffs as the sport’s hottest driver and then won the playoff opener at Las Vegas to solidify a berth in the Round of 12, is the first driver on the wrong side of the cutline for advancement to the next round. Keselowski trails the driver clinging to the final transfer spot — fellow championship heavyweight Martin Truex Jr. — by 18 points heading into Sunday’s elimination race at Kansas Speedway. While Truex clearly has the advantage over Keselowski at the moment, the reality is that neither driver can get too comfortable. A bad or even mediocre day at Kansas for Keselowski or Truex could eliminate one or even both from title contention.

The Notorious Talladega ‘Big One’ Was Conspicuously MIA

hen the Monster Energy Series competes at Talladega, you never know who’s going to win or run up front. You also never know exactly how the overall race is going to unfold in terms of strategy. But one thing you can almost take to the bank is that there’s going to be at least one major multi-car crash that wipes out a good chunk of the field. Yet, Sunday, in 193 laps of hard racing, the “Big One” never happened. The closest thing to a “Big One” was a five-car wreck in Turn 4 on the scheduled next-to-last lap that sent the race to overtime. During that overtime, more wrecking occurred, but it still wasn’t enough to qualify as a true “Big One.” So, there you have it. In case anyone ever wondered, it is possible to run a race at Talladega without the “Big One” rearing its ugly head.

2 StewartHaas Racing Was In Another League At ‘Dega

rom start to finish and even before the green flag ever waved at Talladega, Stewart-Haas Racing was in total command. Not since the days of Dale Earnhardt Inc. with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Michael Waltrip in the early 2000s has an organization been as superior to the competition at Talladega as SHR was on Sunday afternoon. In addition to making it a clean sweep of the top two finishing positions with race winner Aric Almirola and second-place Clint Bowyer, SHR drivers made it a clean sweep of the top four positions in Stage 1, Stage 2 and qualifying. Collectively, three of the four SHR drivers led a whopping 155 of the 193 laps run on Sunday, with SHR’s Kurt Busch (108 laps led) and Kevin Harvick (46) leading the way in individual laps spent out front. 1 The Stars Finally Aligned For Aric Almirola

n a season where he’s had plenty of fast cars and been in the hunt for the win on numerous occasions only to always come up short in the end, Aric Almirola finally put it all together for a complete race at Talladega and the result was a victory that punched his ticket to the Round of 8. While Almirola didn’t lead any lap but the final one at Talladega, the 34-year-old Tampa, Florida native spent virtually the entire race running in the top four with the rest of his Stewart-Haas Racing teammates. Appearing to be headed for a second-place finish, Almirola was there to capitalize when teammate Kurt Busch ran out of gas with half a lap to go. The win was Almirola’s first since joining SHR for the 2018 season and the second of his Monster Energy Series career, the first coming in 2014 at Richard Petty Motorsports.

Jimmie Johnson, Chad Knaus Breakup Necessary But Sad By Jared Turner

he old adage holds that all good things must come to an end. Sadly, that’s even true of the longstanding driver-crew chief pairing of Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus. Winners of seven championships and 81 races together (Johnson won two races when Knaus was serving a suspension), the dynamic duo has accomplished things that no one thought were possible. But as success for the No. 48 team has waned over the past couple seasons and this season in particular, the relationship between Johnson and Knaus — already known to be contentious at times — has suffered. So, instead of finishing out his career with Knaus in his familiar spot atop the No. 48 pit box, Johnson will go racing next season with rookie Monster Energy Series crew chief Kevin

Meendering, while Knaus moves over to the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports team of secondyear driver William Byron. Is the impending change a good and necessary one for both Johnson and Knaus? Without a doubt, it is. It’s clear that their communication is not what it once was, and that, be it a result of strained relations or something else, Johnson’s cars haven’t been up to speed this season. The breakup will also give both men an opportunity to enjoy a new beginning of sorts before they inevitably ride off into the sunset in the not-too-distant future. However, it’s both weird and sad to think of anyone other than Knaus calling the shots for Johnson on race day or going to Victory Lane with the seven-time champ. Despite their occasional quarrels over the years, what the two have accomplished together will likely never be repeated. Both are bound for future inclusion in the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and both, it would appear, still possess the passion to win races and championships. Unfortunately, any future successes they enjoy won’t happen together. tALLADEGA rearview: october 15, 2018

through his father who worked on race cars as a hobby. The younger Labonte started driving a quarter-midget at age 7 and became a star on the local short tracks when he was a teenager. Labonte joined the series full time in 1979 and the statistics show he won 22 NASCAR Cup Series races in 890 starts over 37 seasons. In 1984, Labonte became the first driver from outside the Southeast to win the NASCAR premier series championship since New Yorkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bill Rexford in 1950. He claimed a second series title 12 years later in 1996 while driving for Hendrick Motorsports. Including his two championship seasons,

It’s been a tough summer for parts of Florida’s Gulf Coast. The phenomenon known as “red tide” has blanketed beaches in dead marine animals and filled the ocean breeze with a stench. Consequently, many tourists have stayed away and locals have busied themselves with the arduous task of cleanup. PIRTEK Sarasota in Sarasota, Florida, has been there to lend a hand during the ongoing remediation efforts. “It’s significant: The water

here is a brownish-red color, not the beautiful blue-green, like we’re used to,” said Art Snyder, operations manager at PIRTEK Sarasota. “It’s been a serious problem here and we at PIRTEK are glad to be helping out in whatever way we can.” Snyder also oversees operations for PIRTEK franchises in Lakeland, Ocala and Fort Myers. During the red tide outbreak, hydraulically powered sweepers stay busy at the beach removing dead fish and other debris. The city of

Longboat Key near Sarasota recently needed hose work on some of its idled sand-raking equipment, so a PIRTEK Mobile Service Vehicle came out to perform the work. PIRTEK technicians are on call 24 hours a day to provide onsite replacement of hydraulic and pneumatic hoses. algae explosion – especially severe in 2018 – depletes oxygen levels in the ocean. As an unpleasant result, heaps of fish and other sea creatures succumb to the oxygen deficit and wash up on shore where they pollute the beaches. Another negative impact is that it renders shellfish in the affected regions dangerous to eat. There are also concerns that toxins from the algae can mix with ocean spray and become airborne, causing irritations in people’s throats, eyes and noses. The Florida Department of Health is cautioning people with chronic respiratory conditions to avoid areas where red tide is a problem. “Red tide has really affected my family’s weekend visits to the beach,” Snyder said. “We haven’t been there in a few months now. It bothers people’s eyes and throats, it makes breathing very difficult.” A number of different machines are designed to clean the resulting mess. One

piece that PIRTEK serviced is a tractor that pulls a small trailer across the sands. The tractor uses a power “rake” that whisks the debris up a conveyor and into a holding compartment. Snyder said that it’s critical to keep the machines operational during the red tide crisis, because they’re in perpetual use. “If that rake’s not constantly cleaning up what the waves bring in, the area is littered with fish – it’s a terrible eyesore,” he said. Technicians Giovanni Austin and Eric Sanchez have both worked on the remediation equipment. Sanchez said that when he arrived recently to replace a blown hydraulic hose, the machinery still had rotting fish inside. “Smell-wise, this was definitely the toughest service call I’ve ever had to do,” Sanchez said. “But we got the job done.” tALLADEGA rearview: october 15, 2018

We’re not trying to pull drivers out of the car. We’re trying to help them feel better so they perform better.” ▶▶ How does the I-PAS compare with other concussion tests? “From the standard of detecting and diagnosing oculomotor, vestibular and reaction time deficiencies, it takes the subjectivity out of the hands of the examiner. spotlight going on in the brain without the subjectivity of some exams, or without an athlete trying to trick a certain test.” ▶▶ Will a driver go through baseline testing at the start of the season so that the test will detect discrepancies from those metrics head impacts? “You don’t need any baseline testing. The system is able to track and develop a data bank of what’s normal for people of a certain age group. It can alter some of the parameters. When dealing with racecar drivers, it considers that their reflex timing and reaction timing is going to be quicker than the average population. Once you establish a normal value for a particular sport, you can test and see variances when there’s some sort of issue.” ▶▶ How is the test administered? “You put these goggles on, and you have the ability to make sure your vision is completely clear. You can see the stimuli. Then you follow the stimuli. It’s testing the functionality of smooth pursuits and looking for stagnants. Blurred vision isn’t a part of it. It will find what’s going on in the microscopic function of the brain. Say you’re having difficulty looking to your left. If we find that’s where the deficit is occurring, then we can focus on those areas to rehab and get where they need to be.” ▶▶ When do you expect to administer this test to racecar drivers? After races? “This isn’t necessarily going to take the place of a clinician’s medical acumen. If a driver didn’t lose consciousness and his car wasn’t altered, he’s going to continue to drive. A driver won’t come off the track for testing. If the car flips or collides, then I see the utility in using this. IndyCar has already started to use this at the track. For NASCAR and ARCA, from what we’ve been told, it doesn’t look like it will be an issue, but we haven’t been given the green light yet.”

n Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018, Kyle Larson, driver of the Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, looked deeply disappointed. The California native looked to be out of contention to continue on in this year’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs at the conclusion of the 109-lap race on Charlotte Motor Speedway’s new 2.8-mile Roval road course. Miraculously, he sealed the deal by nursing his badly battered machine across the startfinish line in 25th and continued on to the next round. After being involved in a Turn One

multi-car crash with six laps remaining, his No. 42 crew made repairs and got him out to limp around the track during the final three laps. During the final circuit, race leaders Martin Truex Jr. and Jimmie Johnson made heavy contact with the checkered flag in sight, giving Ryan Blaney and Team Penske the surprise win. Larson passed the stalled cars of Jeffrey Earnhardt and Johnson, setting up a threeway tie along with Almirola and Johnson for the final transfer spot. The tiebreaker of best finishes in the first round of four races went to Larson and Almirola with Johnson’s hopes for an eighth-career title dashed. “Thankfully, we got the tie-breaker,” Larson said. “At the same time, I’m happy to make it to the next round. I’m disappointed we didn’t get the win today. I felt like I had the fastest car.”
