Brad Keselowski Predicts Tandem Drafting Will Return This week Eric Estepp, host and creator of Out of the Groove, brings us a whirlwind episode of news, rumors, and gossip from around the world of NASCAR. First up, the fan favorite discussion point - TV ratings. How’d we do this week? Outside of Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick, there weren’t any major storylines heading into ISM to hype it up. How did the UNC-Duke game affect the weekend viewership? Then we get to the big story - the possible return of one of the most controversial forms of racing, tandem drafting. Some fans loved

the pairings on super speedways as unique, while others thought it was bizarre and artificial. While it’s been missing from NASCAR since 2011, none other than Brad Keselowski himself predicted that it could be back this year, thanks to the new aero package for 2019. While he only predicted it for Daytona and Talladega, needless to say it got the fanbase talking. In today’s episode of Out of the Groove, Eric breaks down the new package, the race schedule ahead, and whether or not these factors might make tandem drafting a reality. Finally, a bonus topic - will we ever see a NASCAR dirt series? auto club preview: March 14, 2019

Going Back to Cali. Several top drivers will return to their home state
Having just wrapped up the first race of the season on a 1-mile track, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series heads to a 2-mile facility for the first time in 2019. Here are five things that all fans need to watch for when the green flag waves on Sunday’s Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway in Southern California. auto club preview: March 14, 2019

hanks to Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Larson, two of the past three Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California have been won by natives of The Golden State. Johnson, from El Cajon, California, last won at ACS in 2016 and is actually a six-time winner at the Southern California track where he picked up Monster Energy Series career
victory No. 1 back in 2002. Larson, a native of Elk Grove, California, went to Victory Lane at his home track two years ago. Both men look forward to racing and the possibility of winning at their home track this weekend. “You never forget the site of your first win,” Johnson said. “I love going ‘home’ and seeing familiar faces.” Larson calls ACS “an intense racetrack,” adding: “The race feels demanding with what you’re fighting in the car, but it’s a really fun place to drive.” auto club preview: March 14, 2019

artin Truex Jr. put a major beatdown on the field one year ago at Auto Club Speedway, leading 125 of 200 laps on the way to a commanding victory in his No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota. Truex returns to Fontana this year with a different organization (Joe Gibbs Racing) but the same crew chief (Cole Pearn), the same manufacturer (Toyota) and the same confidence that propelled him

to his 2018 triumph in Southern California. After four races as driver of the No. 19 JGR car, Truex has three top-10s that include a pair of runner-up finishes, one of them coming in this past weekend’s event at ISM Raceway in Phoenix, Arizona. Truex’s first victory with JGR seems virtually imminent, and there’s absolutely no good reason to believe it can’t or won’t happen this weekend at a track where the 2017 Monster Energy Series champion is the defending race winner. auto club preview: March 14, 2019

Kyle Busch’s Quest For 200
A
fter earning his 198th and 199th NASCAR national series wins in last weekend’s NASCAR Xfinity Series and Monster Energy Series races at ISM Raceway, respectively, Kyle Busch will have two chances this weekend at Auto Club Speedway to capture his historic 200th national series victory. The first will come in Saturday’s Xfinity Series race. If he doesn’t get it done
there, he will get to try again in Sunday’s Monster Energy Series race. Busch is a previous Fontana winner in both series. Adam Stevens, Busch’s Monster Energy Series crew chief, admits that he would prefer his driver wait until Sunday to hit the 200-mark so that he can be part of the milestone celebration. “It would be kind of nice,” said Stevens, who guided Busch to the 2015 Monster Energy Series championship. “Maybe I’ll have to take him for some bad sushi or something on Friday night (before the Xfinity race).” auto club preview: March 14, 2019

T
he temperature in the room got ratcheted up considerably last weekend at ISM Raceway when Daniel Suarez and Michael McDowell came to blows on pit road after their respective qualifying runs. While the two drivers claim to have smoothed things over, it’s anyone’s guess whether or not the bad blood between them will return this weekend at Auto Club Speedway or
2
somewhere down the road. It’s also possible — maybe even likely — that another feud or two could come to the surface this weekend in Southern California. After all, ACS has been the site of more than one controversy over the years, the most memorable coming in 2013 when crew members for Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin tussled in the garage after Logano wrecked Hamlin while racing for the win. That same race, Logano and Tony Stewart sparred on pit road. “It’s time he learns a lesson,” Stewart said at the time. auto club preview: March 14, 2019

The Return Of The New Aero Package In Its Fullness
A
fter a race where the new 2019 aero package had minimal impact, the aero rules will play a more prominent role at Auto Club Speedway — a fast, 2-mile track where speeds approach 200 mph. At ACS, the cars will feature the totality of the new aero package for just the second time this year, after the complete package debuted
two weekends ago at Las Vegas. That means the cars will have both the smaller tapered spacer being used at select tracks to reduce engine horsepower, along with the aero ducts that are being utilized at certain venues to generate tighter racing. This weekend, the cars will also continue to feature the baseline aero elements of the 2019 rules package: a taller rear spoiler, a larger front splitter and a wider radiator pan. Will these changes for the first time lead to the close-quarters racing that NASCAR is desperately trying to create? auto club preview: March 14, 2019

▶▶ A three-time premier series winner at Auto Club Speedway, Kyle Busch returns to Southern California on top of the world after scoring his 198th and 199th NASCAR national series victories last weekend at ISM Raceway in Arizona. Will this be the weekend he reaches the magical 200? ▶▶ A six-time winner at Auto Club Speedway, Jimmie Johnson is understandably fond of racing in his home state of California. Johnson’s affinity for ACS is especially strong, with the seven-time champ having notched NASCAR premier series victory No. 1 at the track in 2002. ▶▶ Winning consecutive races at any track is always a difficult task, but Martin Truex Jr. — last year’s winner at Auto Club Speedway — has a good shot to do so this weekend. Truex, who dominated last year at Fontana, has finished runner-up two of the past three weekends. ▶▶ Reigning Monster Energy Series champion Joey Logano has been really close to winning several times at Auto Club Speedway but has never quite been able to close the deal. He will try again this weekend as he seeks his second victory in three outings. auto club preview: March 14, 2019

n June 6, 2004, Mark Martin, driver of the Roush-Fenway Racing Ford, collected his 34th of 40 career Cup series victories in the MBNA America 400 – Salute to Heroes at Dover International Speedway. He began the 400-mile event on the 1-mile Delaware track from the seventh position. The Arkansas native remained in the top 10 and ran a steady race, avoiding 11 cautions over 90 laps that
slowed the field for ¼ of the race distance. On Lap 346, Martin avoided a 19-car wreck that developed with the cars in positions ahead of him. He regained the lap he lost to the leaders and was able to make up lost ground. Martin sealed the deal by taking the lead when Kasey Kahne, driver of the Evernham Motorsports Dodge, crashed after hitting oil on the track with 19 laps
remaining. Finishing second was Tony Stewart, followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Burton and Scott Riggs. Even though Martin snapped a 73-race winless streak, he decided not to do the traditional victory burnout, saying he would instead leave it to the younger drivers to make the tire smoke fly. He simply waved to the crowd, circled the track and made his way to victory lane. “Everything worked out in our favor,” Martin said. “And believe me, we were due, because things have worked against us so much for so long.”

ubba Wallace, the 25-year-old driver of the No. 43 Chevrolet owned by NASCAR legend Richard Petty, is the first African-American since the early 1970s to compete full time in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Wallace’s journey to NASCAR’s premier series started in go-karts when he was 9 years old. “We put about two years into that and worked our way up through the asphalt ranks,” said Wallace, who was born in Mobile, Alabama, but moved to Concord, North Carolina, when he was 2. “We graduated from go-karts and went to Bandoleros, Legend Cars, Late Models, and eventually got our start in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series with Rev Racing and the NASCAR Drive for Diversity program.” Wallace’s first NASCAR Gander Outdoors
Truck Series victory at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway on Oct. 26, 2013, was a milestone moment as he became the first AfricanAmerican to win a major NASCAR race since Wendell Scott took the checkered flag in 1963. “It was huge,” Wallace responded when asked about the significance of that victory. “There are a lot of variables that go into where I’m at today and that is right up there at the top. Without that win, who knows if I would have been back in the truck again in 2014.” Wallace is in his sophomore season behind the wheel of Petty’s No. 43 entry. Truck Series Driver Sees Growth With GMS By Joseph Wolkin
NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series rookie Sheldon Creed is an interesting character. He can’t sit still, and it’s something the GMS Racing driver believes will help him compete for a championship this year. What’s it like to know you have the opportunity to race full-time at such a young age? “I wouldn’t say it’s overwhelming, but I put pressure on myself to perform. When I don’t do well, I just work harder that week. I put more time into it to fix those mistakes and stop myself from making them.”
Sheldon Creed, 21, has a full-time ride on the Gander Outdoors Truck Series.
What do you do with your free time? “When I’m home in California, I go ride bikes. Now, I do mountain biking more. I like working on a lot of projects at home, which I haven’t been able to do as much because I’m in an apartment now. I’ve been adjusting to the North Carolina life. I’m trying to figure out some hobbies here. I can go wakeboarding or snowboarding. Pretty much anything action-sports I just love.”

amon Lopez, transporter driver for Levine Family Racing and driver Matt Dibenedetto, was introduced to motorsports through his geographic location as a child. At the time, he was fascinated by the open-wheel Indy cars and loved seeing them race at high speeds. “I’m from Ontario, Calif., so I went to the Ontario Motor Speedway as a kid in the 1970s,” Lopez said. “It was close enough to the house that you could hear the Indy cars
and NASCAR there. I liked Indy cars better at the time. Their California 500 race was always held on Labor Day, and that’s my birthday.” Lopez studied computer science and worked in that field until 1999 when he answered an ad from the newspaper asking for help with hospitality. As it turned out, the job was with Team Penske’s Indy Car team. He also worked with Penske’s driving school at the speedway and became a crew member for Indy car driver Hélio Castroneves. In 2006, he turned his attention to driving transporters for H. Scott Motorsports, the Monster Energy hauler and now Levine Family Racing for his second full season. “Hauler driving is about getting from point A to Point B safely,” Lopez said. “It’s also my responsibility to make sure we have what we need on the hauler. I check with the mechanics to make sure everything is there.” Lopez enjoys taking the team’s racecars all around the country. “The travel to me is exciting,” Lopez said. “I enjoy the solitude of being in the truck and being on the road. That can be very relaxing. Other than that, it’s also awesome meeting the fans and getting to know them.” auto club preview: March 14, 2019

Jeffrey Earnhardt’s Golden Opportunity BY Jared Turner
W ith primar y sponsorship from Xtreme Concept s, Jef frey Earnhardt is embarking on a nine - race NASCAR Xf init y Series schedule with Joe Gibbs Racing. Here’s what the four th generation driver had to say. How excited are you about 2019? It’s huge, obviously. This is an opportunity every driver dreams of – getting to run in the best of the best equipment out there. To be involved with a team that, No. 1, is so good, and, No. 2, is coming off such a successful season last year with Christopher Bell, is really, really exciting and a dream come true.
Do you feel like this is the big break you’ve been waiting for? Yeah, for sure. It’s put up or shut up time. This whole time you’ve been wanting to get in good equipment to go prove that you can drive and run up front and be successful in the sport, and now I’m being given that opportunity. What would you consider a successful season? Go win all nine. That would be a successful season. The thing is; the equipment’s there. But it is racing and at the end of the day, everything’s got to go your way. I think the biggest thing is going to be me just trying to do my part as the driver, because they’ve got quite the stacked crew at Gibbs to make sure the rest is all taken care of. What’s your relationship like with Xtreme Concepts? It all started this past year. Landon Ash, the owner of Xtreme Concepts, is a big-hearted guy and a guy that I now consider a really close friend who just really wanted to see me get an opportunity to be in successful equipment and get a chance at this deal. That said a lot to me about the kind of person he is, and he’s also done so much in our military community. Their company trains a lot of military dogs, police dogs, TSA dogs and bomb-detection dogs. auto club preview: March 14, 2019

Spotlight They do a lot there and also on the training side with special ops guys. Landon is a huge supporter of our military and our country, and that’s something I’m really big on, too, so we jell together pretty good and we like to have fun on the side and just enjoy our time. It’s been a great partnership, and they’re giving me a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I will be forever thankful for. How do you spend your downtime? When I’m not racing, you tend to find me out
Landon Ash, CEO of Xtreme Concepts
What were your first impressions of Jeffrey? Jeffrey is as genuine as it gets. The person you see on TV and on social media is the same guy that you would see if you were hanging out with him at his house or in the duck blind. He loves a day with his dog in the boat or in the field just as much as he is invested in his work and his fans that come with it. After seeing his devotion to the veteran community and the gold star families, the

I get enjoyment out of knowing I’m eating something that I went out and harvested myself instead of something you bought in the grocery store that you’re not really sure where it came from. I spend a lot of time outdoors, whether I’m hunting, riding four-wheelers, hanging out with buddies, whatever it may be.
impression that he made stuck with me. What are some ways Jeffrey can build the Xtreme Concepts brand and help you reach a larger audience? Jeffrey is a fourthgeneration Earnhardt and the pedigree that comes with that name holds a lot of weight with the sport and the fans. We want to highlight our foundation – First Foundation – that gives back and supports our military and first responders, those on scene first, foreign or domestic. It is striking that those
groups of people that put themselves in harm’s way to protect American values and freedom are not getting the proper support. They are not appreciated enough for what they do, and their heroic actions are taken for granted, and that in itself is a national tragedy. What do you hope Jeffrey accomplishes this season? I expect big things in 2019. The sport will be celebrating another Earnhardt in Victory Lane. I expect for Jeffrey to be able to show the world what he is capable of and be competitive week in and week out.

spotlight Dr. Jason Cormier spoke to NASCAR teams about safety and prevention at Daytona International Speedway.
MSG: Making Racing Safer By Dan Guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. As NASCAR unveils a new aero package in 2019, Cormier continues his focus on
concussion prevention and education. He maintains that preventing concussions among race car drivers actually starts several days before the race. “One of our biggest focuses for drivers is hydrating their bodies pre-race,” Cormier said. “It’s most important to cut back on processed foods, increase hydration for three or four days prior to the race, increase carbs, and decrease proteins and fibers on race day. They don’t hold up as well as carbs on race day.” Cormier also recommends that drivers familiarize themselves with the concussion protocol at each track. Sometimes, a driver can feel disoriented or confused after a wreck if he or she is unfamiliar with the track’s layout.

Introducing the Q-Collar One piece of technology that has Dr. Jason Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountaindwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull.
“Understand the protocol,” Cormier said. “The scariest part for the driver is not knowing what’s next. Don’t panic, settle down. Learn the system before you get in the car.” Many people who suffer concussions put their trust in doctors who are unfamiliar with diagnosing and treating concussions. Cormier suggests that anyone who is diagnosed with a concussion seek out a specialist. “General practitioners might not be certified in how to look at concussions,” Cormier said. “You need a practitioner who knows how to treat it.” Once a doctor diagnoses a driver with a concussion, the athlete must cross a number of milestones before returning to competition. For example, the protocol might include resting, then a ride on a stationary bike, then a run on a treadmill, then a run on land for 20-30 minutes, then a 50- to 60-minute workout with more intense exercises, then weights added to the exercise, and
then, following clearance by a certified specialist, a return to competition. “The biggest issue we have now is overly diagnosed concussions,” Cormier said. “A headache is a common symptom of a concussion, but we can’t forget that people have anxiety attacks, dehydration, migraines and tension headaches due to stress when they haven’t had a concussion. “When you get a concussion, once the injury has ended and you’re symptom-free, you are no more at risk of suffering another concussion. But if you return to action before you’re clear of concussion injury and the associated symptoms, you can absolutely get more concussions. We’re trying to teach people how to track the actual injuries – not the symptoms.”

T
he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

Nascar Pets
Drivers and their furry friends BY Jared Turner
J
ohn Hunter Nemechek’s house could be likened to an animal farm these days. A pet lover from childhood, the now 21-year-old NASCAR Xfinity Series driver is the owner and caretaker of three rambunctious but friendly dogs: a 3-year-old Goldendoodle named Layla, a 3-year-old Charcoal Lab named Tucker and a 1-year-old Black Lab named Nyx. With his trio of furry friends to care for, Nemechek is never concerned about boredom.
“Everyone jokes around and sends me pictures with a bunch of puppies running into a house and stuff like that,” he said. “I feel like that’s what I have right now with these three. They’re definitely a handful, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” While Nemechek is still relatively new to life with three dogs, his passion for pets is nothing new. “I’ve always had a love for animals,” said the son of longtime NASCAR Cup Series driver Joe Nemechek. “We used to own a horse farm. So I was around horses, but my passion has always been for dogs. They’re a man’s best friend. Being able to walk in the door to them, hang out with them and hug them and play with them, it’s a lot of fun.”

SureCan: A New Way to Dispense Fuel BY Jared Turner
W
ho likes spilling gasoline when you’re simply trying to fuel up your lawnmower? Thanks to a revolutionary, highly sophisticated but easyto-use product appropriately dubbed the “SureCan,” pouring gas doesn’t have to be so frustrating anymore. In fact, the SureCan makes pouring a downright enjoyable experience. “The most important benefit that people see right off is it’s just easier to use,” said Brad Ouderkirk, the founder and CEO of SureCan,
Inc. “It takes all the pain out of it. When you are filling anything up, you can hold the can in a comfortable position, you can see what you are filling up and you’re not standing on your head.” Ouderkirk owned a cabinet shop where he built custom cabinets when he first conceived the SureCan concept about 10 years ago. “There was an awful lot of wood in that first prototype since that was what I had,” Ouderkirk recalled. “I put it all together and started showing my new gas can prototype to everyone who would listen, and then asked them if this was something they would buy if it was on the market. I just got a resounding, ‘Yes, if that thing was available, I would take one in a second.’” auto club preview: March 14, 2019

Spotlight After some eight years of dreaming, planning, development and testing, the SureCan was ready to hit the stores in the spring of 2015. Now, it’s being sold by all the major outdoors retailers – Lowe’s, Menards, Tractor Supply and Ace Hardware. Meanwhile, SureCan, Inc. – headquartered in Utah but with its factory in Lebanon, Tennessee – has more than tripled in size. “People have really taken to our gas can since it’s a lot safer and since the gas only
‘People Are Noticing’
In addition to being picked up by major retailers, the SureCan has received global recognition. In 2014, Ouderkirk took his new product to the National Hardware Show in Las Vegas where the SureCan won the Most Innovative New Product Award and a Retailers Choice Award. Later, the SureCan was featured on the DIY Network’s hit show, “I Want That,” and as a Top 100 Product for This Old House Magazine. The SureCan has since been selected a Silver Winner at the Edison Awards in New York City where 300
goes where it’s supposed to go,” Ouderkirk said. “It’s also greener so you’re not spilling all over the ground and getting all the emissions into the environment. And, it’s the easiest gas can to use. “The can is 100-percent made in the USA and it will always be that. We’re going to always keep it here. That’s important to us. I think we’re on our way to changing how people dispense fuel into their machines.”
judges around the world voted on new innovative products. “People are noticing that we’re different and that we’ve actually changed the way people do things from here on out,” Ouderkirk said. “Basically, our growth is attributed to our innovation. All we have to do is get in front of people and people immediately see the benefit and they’re purchasing our cans.” One of the most innovative features of the SureCan – which is available in both 2.2- and 5-gallon sizes – is its thickness. Ouderkirk recalls conducting an
informal test last summer when he intentionally left two 5-gallon cans in the back of his truck. After a week, he couldn’t smell the gasoline. “Our can is six layers thick,” Ouderkirk said. “One layer in the middle is a barrier layer that locks all the vapors in the can. One thing you’ll notice right away is that if the can is in your shed or garage, you’ll never smell gasoline, because the vapors are locked in so tight. It does its job. It locks the vapors in and keeps the emissions from escaping into the atmosphere.”
