Kyle Busch vs Richard Petty – the Best or Greatest Driver?

T

his week Eric Estepp, host and creator of Out of the Groove, covers Kyle Busch’s record breaking victory at Auto Club this weekend. Specifically, he hashes out from a fan’s point of view exactly what the difference is between Kyle Busch and Richard Petty, and how their records speak for themselves. But is it all about the drivers? What role do teams play in the standings this season? Eric looks at Joe Gibbs Racing and Team Penske, ostensibly the two best performing teams in the Monster Energy Cup Series this season.

Of course, the 2019 season is only just getting started, so the analysis really only focuses on the top finishers and performers so far – not points standings. And how did the drivers perform at Auto Club, given that this was their third live race using the full version of the new 2019 aero package package? Was it any different? Did it meet the expectations of the fans watching at home? And where did it land on Eric’s patented Groovy Gauge? You’ll have to watch and find out! auto club Rearview: March 18, 2019

yle Busch became the first back-to-back winner of 2019 and reached a major milestone as the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series wrapped up its West Coast swing. Before NASCAR’s premier division heads east to Martinsville Speedway for the first short-track race of the year, here are five lessons learned in the Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway in California. Team Penske Is On The Gas

fter winning two of the season’s first three races, Team Penske has been shut out of Victory Lane the past two weekends. The organization continues to impress just the same, however, with the latest evidence coming Sunday at Auto Club Speedway where Penske drivers Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski and Ryan Blaney finished second, third and fifth, respectively. “We have some work to do to get faster, but the team did a great job today,” said Logano, who came home the runner-up to winner Kyle Busch. “We held strong today with the Auto Club Ford Mustang.” No matter how you slice it, Sunday was an impressive performance for the Penske group, which continues to flex its proverbial muscle while in pursuit of its third premier series championship. “It was a good effort by the team, and we were right there in position and we gave it all we had,” Keselowski said. auto club Rearview: March 18, 2019

Team Chevy Is In A Slump

ith five races in the books, Chevrolet drivers have yet to win a race in 2019. On Sunday at Auto Club Speedway, only two Chevrolet drivers – sixth-place finisher Kurt Busch and 10th-place Austin Dillon – ended up in the top 10. To find the last time a Bowtie boy won a race in NASCAR’s premier series, you must go all the way back to October 23, 2018 at Kansas Speedway, where Chase Elliott took the victory. Since then, Chevy is a disappointing 0-for-9. “I want to see more Bowties up there all around me,” said Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kurt Busch, the highest finishing Chevy driver in three of the season’s five races. “It’s those teams that are there right now with Penske, SHR, Gibbs, that’s what’s towing the boat and towing the whole sequence. For us at Ganassi, we’ve got to cross over that threshold and get to that next level.” auto club Rearview: March 18, 2019

Kyle Busch Refused To Lose At Fontana

yle Busch enjoyed a superb Sunday at Auto Club Speedway, but it wasn’t without adversity. Hit with a tail-end-of-the-longestline penalty for speeding while exiting the pits on lap 123 of 200, Busch feared that his shot at victory might be over. “Yeah, that thought certainly crosses your mind,” he said after recovering to take the win and leading the final 26 laps. “I knew we had a great race car. We had a great race car all day long. We were fast. I wasn’t sure how well we were going to be able to come through the field, get back in traffic, get our way worked back up to the lead. Brad (Keselowski) was really fast that run, he was way out front. Sometimes you have to have a little bit of luck on your side. Fortunately, we were in the Interstate Batteries green today with it being St. Patty’s day.” auto club Rearview: March 18, 2019

Kurt Busch Has Brotherly Love For Kyle

espite achieving notable success throughout his NASCAR career, Kurt Busch hasn’t posted numbers that even remotely compare to those recorded by little brother Kyle, who on Sunday at Auto Club Speedway captured his 200th win among NASCAR’s three national touring series. However, if Kurt is at all envious of his younger sibling’s success, he certainly didn’t show it after Sunday’s race – a race in which he finished sixth. “For my little brother to have 200 wins, they’ve all added up through his hard work and his dedication to perfection,” said Kurt, who owns 39 wins among the national series. The older Busch sibling and 2004 Monster Energy Series champion admitted that he would like to win with more regularity – something Kyle has clearly mastered. “I’ve got to hold up my end of the bargain,” he said. “I’ve gotten too nice and I’m not winning enough; but I’m having fun.” auto club Rearview: March 18, 2019

Kyle Busch Cherishes His Remarkable Run To 200

yle Busch captured first NASCAR national series victory in a NASCAR Xfinity Series race on May 14, 2004 at Richmond Raceway. Driving for Hendrick Motorsports at the time, Busch took the win after starting from the pole. Fifteen years later, with a dominating victory in Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway, Busch amassed his milestone 200th win among NASCAR’s three national divisions – the Monster Energy Series, Xfinity Series and NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series. “Feels just like number one,” the Joe Gibbs Racing driver said after sweeping all three stages and leading 134 of 200 laps at Fontana. “It feels just like yesterday. Man, that was such an awesome race car. Just awesome. To win 200, I mean, whatever it means, it means a lot to me. It’s an amazing opportunity to drive for Joe Gibbs. I cherish every minute of it, love it always.” auto club Rearview: March 18, 2019

No Excuses For Fontana Qualifying Debacle By Jared Turner

G

roup qualifying for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series is under enormous scrutiny after nary a driver managed to post a time in the final round of time trials for Sunday’s race at Auto Club Speedway. What happened at Fontana was a debacle of epic proportions as pole winner Austin Dillon was declared the top qualifier based on his speed in the second of three qualifying rounds. “That’s what you don’t want,” NASCAR senior vice president of competition Scott Miller admitted to reporters at the conclusion of the session. “Obviously having the last 12 cars wait until they couldn’t get a time posted

on the board and kind of making a mockery of the qualifying is not what we expect for our fans.” Of course, NASCAR could have and should have seen this coming. Thanks to the new rules package implemented for this season, drivers are more inclined to run close together during qualifying in an effort pick up a draft from another car and record better times. But the unintended consequence of this shift in strategy is drivers waiting until the final moments of a round to make their qualifying run. At Fontana, the dozen qualifiers in the final round all waited too long, and were thus unable to record a time. “I am a little bit out of patience now with Fridays,” said Clint Bowyer, referring to NASCAR’s traditional qualifying days. “There is so much hard work and dedication by so many teams to go out there and build the fastest car known to mankind inside the walls of their organization, and it just doesn’t matter. That is not racing. I feel like we are capable, as an industry, of putting on a better show than this.” Indeed, the sport can do much better. And let’s hope it will … before what happened at Fontana happens again. auto club Rearview: March 18, 2019

Wild three-wide finish in eNASCAR PEAK iRacing Series iRacing Drivers Put New Aero Package to the Test at Auto Club By Matteo Marcheschi

T

he eNASCAR PEAK Antifreeze iRacing Series was back on track on Tuesday night, this time at the virtual Auto Club Speedway. The race was full of unknowns, the main one being that the event was the first using the new 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series package, which was introduced into iRacing in its latest update, about two weeks ago. This package has been on track three times in the MECS, but hadn’t been used in the PEAK series until the drivers tried their hand at it at Auto Club - and boy was it a wild ride! The race featured eight cautions, with nearly 30 of its 100 laps being run under those cautions. Despite this, 35 of the 40 drivers competing finished on the lead lap, and all but one was still running at the end of the night. Driving for the Renegades was Corey Vincent, who led a racehigh 32 laps, followed by Daytona winner Zack Novak, who led 28 laps. Also leading a significant number of laps were Nick Ottinger and Michael Conti. None of these drivers, though, took home the win. That honor would be achieved by independent driver Eric Smith, who led only the final lap after an incident collected several of the leaders. auto club Rearview: March 18, 2019

Jeffrey Earnhardt’s Golden Opportunity BY Jared Turner

W ith primar y sponsorship from Xtreme Concept s, Jef frey Earnhardt is embarking on a nine - race NASCA R Xf init y Series schedule with Joe Gibbs Racing. Here’s what the four th generation driver had to say. How excited are you about 2019? It’s huge, obviously. This is an opportunity every driver dreams of – getting to run in the best of the best equipment out there. To be involved with a team that, No. 1, is so good, and, No. 2, is coming off such a successful season last year with Christopher Bell, is really, really exciting and a dream come true.

Do you feel like this is the big break you’ve been waiting for? Yeah, for sure. It’s put up or shut up time. This whole time you’ve been wanting to get in good equipment to go prove that you can drive and run up front and be successful in the sport, and now I’m being given that opportunity. What would you consider a successful season? Go win all nine. That would be a successful season. The thing is; the equipment’s there. But it is racing and at the end of the day, everything’s got to go your way. I think the biggest thing is going to be me just trying to do my part as the driver, because they’ve got quite the stacked crew at Gibbs to make sure the rest is all taken care of. What’s your relationship like with Xtreme Concepts? It all started this past year. Landon Ash, the owner of Xtreme Concepts, is a big-hearted guy and a guy that I now consider a really close friend who just really wanted to see me get an opportunity to be in successful equipment and get a chance at this deal. That said a lot to me about the kind of person he is, and he’s also done so much in our military community. Their company trains a lot of military dogs, police dogs, TSA dogs and bomb-detection dogs. auto club Rearview: March 18, 2019

Spotlight They do a lot there and also on the training side with special ops guys. Landon is a huge supporter of our military and our country, and that’s something I’m really big on, too, so we jell together pretty good and we like to have fun on the side and just enjoy our time. It’s been a great partnership, and they’re giving me a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I will be forever thankful for. How do you spend your downtime? When I’m not racing, you tend to find me out

Landon Ash, CEO of Xtreme Concepts

What were your first impressions of Jeffrey? Jeffrey is as genuine as it gets. The person you see on TV and on social media is the same guy that you would see if you were hanging out with him at his house or in the duck blind. He loves a day with his dog in the boat or in the field just as much as he is invested in his work and his fans that come with it. After seeing his devotion to the veteran community and the gold star families, the

in the woods somewhere doing something outdoors. I grew up as a big outdoorsman, and I try to hunt as much as I can. I get enjoyment out of knowing I’m eating something that I went out and harvested myself instead of something you bought in the grocery store that you’re not really sure where it came from. I spend a lot of time outdoors, whether I’m hunting, riding four-wheelers, hanging out with buddies, whatever it may be.

impression that he made stuck with me. What are some ways Jeffrey can build the Xtreme Concepts brand and help you reach a larger audience? Jeffrey is a fourthgeneration Earnhardt and the pedigree that comes with that name holds a lot of weight with the sport and the fans. We want to highlight our foundation – First Foundation – that gives back and supports our military and first responders, those on scene first, foreign or domestic. It is striking that those

groups of people that put themselves in harm’s way to protect American values and freedom are not getting the proper support. They are not appreciated enough for what they do, and their heroic actions are taken for granted, and that in itself is a national tragedy. What do you hope Jeffrey accomplishes this season? I expect big things in 2019. The sport will be celebrating another Earnhardt in Victory Lane. I expect for Jeffrey to be able to show the world what he is capable of and be competitive week in and week out.

Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training.

MSG: Making Racing Safer By Dan Guttenplan

A

cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One health issue that affects NASCAR racecar drivers and fans alike is neck and back pain. Cormier shared some preventative measures one can take to help avoid lower back pain.

“Outside of the red flags – like a fever, weight loss that is not explained by a change in diet, suspicion of cancers, long-term steroid use, or a weak immune system – we can look at simple things to prevent lower back pain,” Cormier said. “We’ll take a look at improving the diet, weight loss, smoking habits and exercise.” A patient can also strengthen his or her core to help prevent lower back pain. Improving one’s range of motion and maintaining an active lifestyle are also helpful preventative measures. In the event that a patient is already affected by lower back pain, Cormier recommends he or she take an anti-inflammatory, such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol – if the patient has been cleared by a doctor. Avoiding carrying large bags, briefcases and purses can also limit the stress on a person’s back. “Watch your posture,” Cormier said. “Make sure you’re not overloading your back. Consider switching to a briefcase or bag on wheels.” auto club Rearview: March 18, 2019

spotlight One of the most common causes of upper back and neck pain in this day and age is poor posture when sending text messages and looking down at smart phones. Writing for extended periods of time without stretching your neck is another common cause. “It’s the result of constantly looking down at a computer or phone,” Cormier said. “It’s important to think about posture.” Neck trauma is a more serious issue that can be managed non-surgically with traction therapy, physical therapy or an interventional procedure, depending on the results of one’s

MRI. Racecar drivers also are at risk of suffering compression fractures. Austin Therriault and Aric Almirola have both suffered those types of injuries in the recent past. “When you’re driving at high speeds, the spine absorbs the ‘G’ forces of the wreck, which predisposes one to the possibility of spinal fractures,” Cormier said. “Protect your body by consistently exercising for a few minutes three to four times weekly, and maintain a healthy life style, and your body will be significantly optimized to endure the physical challenges ahead.”

Introducing Brain Armor

A

new product that excites Cormier in terms of improving brain function is the Brain Armor nutritional supplement. The product is the work of Dr. Julian Bailes, a recognized leader in the field of neurosurgery and the impact of brain injury on brain function. The supplement includes Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which help the human brain possess the ability to grow new nerve cells, or neurons. Cormier said that patients tested after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty

Acids were less likely to incur brain-related injuries. Also, patients that suffered brain-related injuries were more likely to recover after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty Acids. “That component of the nervous system is huge,” Cormier said. “We found that people who are rich

in DHA and EPA levels are more protected with regard to brain function. That drew me in. If we pursue that in racecar drivers, we can protect them with a supplement like Brain Armor that includes fish oil and Omega-3 Fatty Acids.” Fish oils are also available for purchase over the counter. Cormier said the only downside of ingesting fish oil is that of its blood thinning properties. “Other than that, we haven’t seen any downside,” Cormier said. he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

ohn Hunter Nemechek’s house could be likened to an animal farm these days. A pet lover from childhood, the now 21-year-old NASCAR Xfinity Series driver is the owner and caretaker of three rambunctious but friendly dogs: a 3-year-old Goldendoodle named Layla, a 3-year-old Charcoal Lab named Tucker and a 1-year-old Black Lab named Nyx. With his trio of furry friends to care for, Nemechek is never concerned about boredom.

“Everyone jokes around and sends me pictures with a bunch of puppies running into a house and stuff like that,” he said. “I feel like that’s what I have right now with these three. They’re definitely a handful, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” While Nemechek is still relatively new to life with three dogs, his passion for pets is nothing new. “I’ve always had a love for animals,” said the son of longtime NASCAR Cup Series driver Joe Nemechek. “We used to own a horse farm. So I was around horses, but my passion has always been for dogs. They’re a man’s best friend. Being able to walk in the door to them, hang out with them and hug them and play with them, it’s a lot of fun.”

SureCan: A New Way to Dispense Fuel BY Jared Turner

W

ho likes spilling gasoline when you’re simply trying to fuel up your lawnmower? Thanks to a revolutionary, highly sophisticated but easyto-use product appropriately dubbed the “SureCan,” pouring gas doesn’t have to be so frustrating anymore. In fact, the SureCan makes pouring a downright enjoyable experience. “The most important benefit that people see right off is it’s just easier to use,” said Brad Ouderkirk, the founder and CEO of SureCan,

Inc. “It takes all the pain out of it. When you are filling anything up, you can hold the can in a comfortable position, you can see what you are filling up and you’re not standing on your head.” Ouderkirk owned a cabinet shop where he built custom cabinets when he first conceived the SureCan concept about 10 years ago. “There was an awful lot of wood in that first prototype since that was what I had,” Ouderkirk recalled. “I put it all together and started showing my new gas can prototype to everyone who would listen, and then asked them if this was something they would buy if it was on the market. I just got a resounding, ‘Yes, if that thing was available, I would take one in a second.’” auto club Rearview: March 18, 2019

Spotlight After some eight years of dreaming, planning, development and testing, the SureCan was ready to hit the stores in the spring of 2015. Now, it’s being sold by all the major outdoors retailers – Lowe’s, Menards, Tractor Supply and Ace Hardware. Meanwhile, SureCan, Inc. – headquartered in Utah but with its factory in Lebanon, Tennessee – has more than tripled in size. “People have really taken to our gas can since it’s a lot safer and since the gas only

‘People Are Noticing’

In addition to being picked up by major retailers, the SureCan has received global recognition. In 2014, Ouderkirk took his new product to the National Hardware Show in Las Vegas where the SureCan won the Most Innovative New Product Award and a Retailers Choice Award. Later, the SureCan was featured on the DIY Network’s hit show, “I Want That,” and as a Top 100 Product for This Old House Magazine. The SureCan has since been selected a Silver Winner at the Edison Awards in New York City where 300

goes where it’s supposed to go,” Ouderkirk said. “It’s also greener so you’re not spilling all over the ground and getting all the emissions into the environment. And, it’s the easiest gas can to use. “The can is 100-percent made in the USA and it will always be that. We’re going to always keep it here. That’s important to us. I think we’re on our way to changing how people dispense fuel into their machines.”

judges around the world voted on new innovative products. “People are noticing that we’re different and that we’ve actually changed the way people do things from here on out,” Ouderkirk said. “Basically, our growth is attributed to our innovation. All we have to do is get in front of people and people immediately see the benefit and they’re purchasing our cans.” One of the most innovative features of the SureCan – which is available in both 2.2- and 5-gallon sizes – is its thickness. Ouderkirk recalls conducting an

informal test last summer when he intentionally left two 5-gallon cans in the back of his truck. After a week, he couldn’t smell the gasoline. “Our can is six layers thick,” Ouderkirk said. “One layer in the middle is a barrier layer that locks all the vapors in the can. One thing you’ll notice right away is that if the can is in your shed or garage, you’ll never smell gasoline, because the vapors are locked in so tight. It does its job. It locks the vapors in and keeps the emissions from escaping into the atmosphere.”
