WAS 500 MILES TOO MUCH FOR ATLANTA? In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through his complete race review and analysis of the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Fan expectations after Bristol’s block of incredible racing were high going into Atlanta, but it seems there might have been some grumbling about the length. First up though, there were quite a few incidents in the earlier stages of the race. Not necessarily wrecks, but incidents of drivers 0 0 4

making mistakes or getting each other. “Lazy spins,” as Eric says in the video. This led to some bad days for Front Row Motorsports and others. But that wasn’t all this weekend. This was one of the hotter Atlanta races, running much later in the year, and that caused some problems for several drivers. So where did it fall on Eric’s Groovy Gauge, especially with so much fan conversation about the future lengths of these races? Find out in the latest episode of Out of the Groove!

LESSONS LEARNED AT ATLANTA MOTOR SPEEDWAY NASCAR JOINS PUSH FOR PROGRESS Race No. 10 of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season belonged to veteran Kevin Harvick, as the Stewart-Haas Racing driver cruised to a comfortable victory in Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. While Harvick’s third win at AMS and second win of the season was certainly notable, it was by no means the only noteworthy takeaway from the weekend, which NASCAR used to shine a light on issues concerning race and inequality in the United States. Following are five important lessons we learned at AMS. BY JA RED TURNER

2020 IS A YEAR OF PARITY AMONG THE BIG BOYS
W
ith 10 NASCAR Cup Series races in the books this season, four drivers — Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick — have repeated as winners, each going to Victory Lane on two occasions. Teammates Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman account for the other two race wins this year, with each of the Hendrick Motorsports drivers going to Victory Lane once. While 2020 has produced only six different winners in the 10 races run so far, it’s equally notable that none of those drivers has come from an organization that wasn’t Joe Gibbs Racing, Stewart-Haas Racing, Team Penske or Hendrick Motorsports. To no one’s surprise, the top teams are performing at a high level and winning races as they so often do. While all this doesn’t equate to parity as it relates to the rest of the field, it does suggest a higher than usual measure of parity among the top organizations — unlike last season when Joe Gibbs Racing prevailed in an incredible 19 of 36 events.

MARTIN TRUEX JR. IS STARTING TO SHAPE INTO FORM
E
ntering the 2020 season, one of the biggest question marks was how Martin Truex Jr. would do in his first year with crew chief James Small. Truex, who won 24 races over the past five seasons with crew chief Cole Pearn, was left to face life with a new pit boss when Pearn abruptly left the racing business at the end of the 2019 campaign. Although Truex expressed optimism that he would be fine with Small — a former lead engineer for Truex’s team, first at Furniture Row Racing and then at Joe Gibbs Racing — some doubts still lingered about how the pair would perform in their first season together as a driver/crew chief combo. Those doubts are beginning to ease a bit, however, as Truex has now recorded five top-10 finishes in 10 starts with Small atop his pit box. The most recent of those came on Sunday at Atlanta, where Truex finished a season-best third and won each of the first two stages.

BUBBA WALLACE GAVE EVERYONE A SCARE
y far the scariest moment of the Atlanta weekend came not during but after the race when driver Bubba Wallace fainted twice on pit road after emerging from this No. 43 car on the heels of 500 long miles behind the wheel. Wallace, who was believed to be suffering from dehydration brought on by this dry, humid day in South Georgia, was in the middle of a live TV interview with FOX Sports’ Jamie Little when he passed out for the second time, prompting little to say, “he’s not OK,” and tell NASCAR and everyone watching that Wallace needed medical assistance. Fortunately, Wallace quickly came to himself again and was transported to the infield care center where he was treated and released before too long. Wallace later sent out a tweet letting everyone know he was fine, but what happened during his interview with Little was one of the most frightening situations a TV viewer could ever witness during a live broadcast.

JIMMIE JOHNSON IS LEADING NASCAR’S FIGHT AGAINST SOCIAL INJUSTICE
W
hile numerous things happened throughout the NASCAR community leading up to and during the Atlanta race weekend to bring attention to issues of social injustice and racial inequality, no one took a more prominent role in this fight than seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson. In addition to being one of the leading voices in a newly released video where numerous NASCAR drivers came together to express their shared commitment to becoming more educated on race and inequality, Johnson was one of the first drivers to use his personal Twitter page to let everyone know exactly where he stood after the death of George Floyd. “It hurts to see our country being torn apart by racism & hate,” Johnson wrote on the popular social networking site. “I can’t pretend to understand what black men & women have experienced but I can speak out & condemn racial inequality. I hope love for all mankind can prevail & make changes to build a better future for our children.”

WINNING AT ATLANTA CARRIES SPECIAL MEANING FOR KEVIN HARVICK
REPLACEMENT
LIFETIME
D
espite there being no fans in the stands on Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Kevin Harvick still took a Polish victory lap and held three fingers out of his window in memory of the late great Dale Earnhardt, whom Harvick was called on to replace at Richard Childress Racing in 2001 the week after Earnhardt’s tragic death on the final lap of the Daytona 500. Harvick, who won at Atlanta in his third start with Earnhardt’s old team, celebrated that day in similar fashion to the way he did on Sunday and following a victory at Atlanta two years ago. “For me, this place is pretty special just because of the fact that this is where I got my first win, so for me coming back here, it brings back a lot of memories,” Harvick said. “It brings back a lot of things that we didn’t really know how to celebrate on that particular day (in 2001).”

JUST SAYIN’ ▶
IT’S TIME TO REPAVE ATLANTA MOTOR SPEEDWAY
No matter how you spin it, Sunday’s race at Atlanta Motor Speedway was far from thrilling. Aside from the first couple of laps after restarts where drivers typically jockeyed for position, drivers spent most of the day very spread out on the track, with very few close battles for position. Race winner Kevin Harvick ran unchallenged in the final laps, taking the checkered flag by more than 3 ½ seconds ahead of second-place Kyle Busch. All this begs the question: Is it time for AMS to go against conventional wisdom and finally repave its aging, abrasive surface? The evidence suggests it is. JA RED TURNER ▶ IT WAS TOO HOT FOR A RACE IN ATLANTA The Atlanta area is often nicknamed “Hot-Lanta,” in part for its sultry summer temperatures. The moniker couldn’t have been any more appropriate on Sunday, when drivers at Atlanta Motor Speedway in nearby Hampton, Georgia faced extreme heat in a race that was originally scheduled for mid-March — when the weather was much cooler — but that had to be postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to driver Bubba Wallace passing out twice after the race from apparent dehydration and heat exhaustion, other drivers — most notably, Ryan Newman — appeared visibly overheated as well. Before NASCAR schedules another race at Atlanta in June, perhaps the heat should be a consideration.
■■ The track at AMS is due for a repave.
0 1 8
▶ NASCAR NAILED IT BY ADDRESSING RACING INEQUALITY Often criticized for its perceived lack of diversity and attention to issues of race and social injustice, NASCAR knocked a home run on Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway where much of the telecast leading up to the green flag focused on what NASCAR is doing to promote racial inclusion and sensitivity. The most poignant moment came during the pace laps when drivers stopped on the track and paused for a moment of silence after hearing a heartfelt speech from NASCAR president Steve Phelps on racial injustice. Well-done, NASCAR.

HARVICK WINS ATLANTA WITH THE NO. 3 SALUTE This week, popular YouTuber and streamer Rusty Walrus is back outside in his car for another fast reaction to last night’s race in Atlanta. The Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 was a hot one, both literally and figuratively, and Rusty is here to take us through his thoughts and feelings following Harvick’s last win this weekend. But Rusty also gives us his opinion on the fan conversations around the length of races. Many 0 2 6

fans have wondered if NASCAR races, at least the non-Crown Jewel events like Talladega or the Coke 600, should be reduced from 500 miles down to 400, or even 250 like some of the truck series races. Rusty goes into detail beyond just his own personal reactions, and digs into exactly why fans might be having these race length conversations. Myatt Snider BY ROB TIONGSON
Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers in the world of NASCAR. Today, he talks with Myatt Snider, a driver in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. ▶ YOU’RE RANKED 15TH IN YOUR ROOKIE NASCAR XFINITY SERIES SEASON. WHAT’S IT MEAN TO BE IN THIS SERIES AND WITH RICHARD CHILDRESS RACING? It’s been very special because this is one of the most tenured organizations in NASCAR. Just to be a part of that history is pretty special to me. So, the fact that I can bring my sponsors there and we can run well, it’s really important to me. I can’t thank RCR, TaxSlayer, Superior Essex, and Lousiana Hot Sauce for believing in me like they do. I can’t thank them enough for that. ▶ YOU AND YOUR PEERS SPOKE UP TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR RACIAL EQUALITY. WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT YOU’LL DO TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE? For me, to be frank, I’ve lived life in a privileged position because I haven’t had some of those struggles that people of color may have had in their lives. For me, I really can’t really relate to what they’re going through. But I can donate money, I can speak up, and use my voice. For a long time, I made sure to keep anything political off my Twitter. But this is important. We need to take away the stipulation that, “It doesn’t affect me so I shouldn’t talk about it.” Because it affects all of us in the end. These people’s right getting violated is wrong in a lot of ways. Doing what I can is helpful for their cause which is using my voice and donating. I can’t really relate to what they go through, but I want to help out in any way I can, even if it’s in a small part.

The Current State of the World & NASCAR Statements - A Megathread #BlackLivesMatter
Change isn’t an overnight process. But, we, as a community, can make the difference each day and night as the Reddit NASCAR community did with the moderators this past week. Words can be encouraging. However, implementing action for a positive change can be challenging. Still, seeing the community band together and realizing the realities of NASCAR and society is a start to a conversation that cannot limit itself to this past week. Let’s keep having these conversations to be better.

Steve Phelps addresses drivers on recent events prior to the start of today’s race
Prior to the start of Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, NASCAR President Steve Phelps addressed drivers and teams on recent events impacting all of us nationally. This goes beyond politics. This is about human rights. Knowing the leader of NASCAR addressed his support for the African American communities and people of color is a huge step for this series. Hearing from the drivers as well is encouraging to show support for our friends and neighbors. 0 3 0

[Pockrass] AJ Allmendinger admits he didn’t enjoy racing in his final full year as a NASCAR driver. His part-time schedule and commentator duties have rejuvenated him.
Nas160 shared FOX NASCAR’s Bob Pockrass’ tweet in which AJ Allmendinger expressed displeasure during the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series season, his most recent effort in the premier division. It’s refreshing to see this excitable, animated racer finding joy and confidence with Kaulig Racing. His celebration at Atlanta was authentic happiness.

What can NASCAR do to help drivers prevent heat exhaustion?
How many times do you recall seeing Ryan Newman, a brawny driver, look exhausted and spent after a race? Understandably, these latter start times for races need to be looked into to ensure all drivers and teams are as safe as possible while maximizing on TV ratings across the country.

Yesterday, my friend bought a Craftsman Series NASCAR truck, the Addington Racing #60. Driven by Andy Houston and Travis Kvapil. In the latest episode of, “Don’t You Wish You Had This,” skatenula’s friend bought an actual NASCAR Truck. Likely a NASCAR Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series ride from the late 1990s, it was just the tires and body. But imagine when this friend of skatenula has that incredible engine?

TWEETSTORM COMPILED BY ROB TIONGSON
▶ Unfortunately, it was one of the last words spoken by Eric Garner and George Floyd. Prior to Sunday’s race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Bubba Wallace’s shirt sported those impactful words that sadly serve as a reminder of the atrocities in our country. The Black Lives Matter movement isn’t to solely say that it’s just African American lives that matter. And it’s up to us to show Bubba, our friends, and neighbors that we’re alongside them every step of the way. 0 3 4

▶ Jimmie Johnson spoke for all of us when he tweeted his take on the happenings in the U.S. Johnson spoke up to show his support and desire to be a part of this ongoing conversation. While some fans may have expressed their incomprehensible displeasure towards Johnson, the lot of NASCAR nation appreciated the seven-time Cup champion’s tweet. Ultimately, an athlete like Johnson using his celebrity and platform to be a voice of change is meaningful, powerful, and inspirational to see.

▶ Anthony Alfredo’s sleek No. 21 Death Wish Coffee Chevy Camaro could’ve been mistaken for the Batmobile. Seeing that matte black on that Bowtie steel chariot was a cool sight to see even on TV. The Connecticut native made the most with his ride with another solid top-10 finish at Atlanta.
▶ When NASCAR’s most popular icon speaks up, everyone needs to listen. Dale Earnhardt Jr took to his Twitter to lend his support for this incredible human rights movement and explained why this is happening. Ultimately, it’s about love and respect, two qualities that this world sorely, always needs to give.
▶ Leave it to Landon Cassill and his incredible sense of humor with Larry McReynolds’ illustration of Atlanta’s impact with tires, particularly with the abrasive track surface. How many of us thought about a restaurant when analysts say that an abrasive track surface’s impact on tires is like a “cheese grater?”

FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT TO ENSURE BLACK LIVES MATTER BY ROB TIONGSON
A
s a minority who covers NASCAR and motorsports, there are times in which I cannot fully relate to the struggles and atrocities that African Americans endure and have experienced. However, in some ways, I can understand the pain, agony, and despair that African Americans feel with fighting for racial and social equality in this amazing country and in our world. Last month, George Floyd’s death served as a reminder of the racial divide that still plagues our world. For the past two and a half weeks, protests have been held in various cities to lend support for the Black Lives Matter movement, a call to action for equality that’s sorely needed with healing the wounds for minorities and African Americans.

Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr shared his perspective on Floyd’s passing and how Americans and those around the world could be a positive steward for change this past week. Notably, during an appearance on NASCAR Race Hub on FS1, Wallace said, “Words from you could change the way you think by just hearing you say something. I encourage all of my peers to step up and do better than what they have. Don’t let this week go by like everything’s OK.” Certainly, Wallace spoke truth with supporting the Black Lives Matter movement and others that demand for equality. As one of the few African Americans in NASCAR, and the only African American racing full-time in the Cup Series, Wallace’s words resonated with his peers and race fans. Visibly and emotionally
moved prior to Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, FOX NASCAR analyst Jeff Gordon said, “I’ll never know what it’s like to walk in Bubba Wallace’s shoes or those who’ve faced racism. We can do better to create positive change. I’ve been in NASCAR for more than 25 years. Our community doesn’t take that lightly. We are ready for change.” Undoubtedly, NASCAR’s efforts with diversity, while slower than most sports, has made some strides in recent years. Consider that there’s young talents like Rajah Caruth, a racer who’s making his way up the racing ladder. Then there’s Brehanna Daniels, a tire changer and Drive for Diversity graduate, who’s used her platform to be a positive catalyst for change with racial and social equality, not solely with NASCAR. Wallace wasn’t alone with speaking up in the NASCAR arena as fellow drivers like Ty Dillon, a racer who he held a productive dialogue with last week on Instagram, Jimmie
Johnson, Myatt Snider, Parker Kligerman, and Daniel Suarez lent their support. Sure, there’ll always be facets that make each of us different. Ideologies, upbringings, lifestyles, and experiences certainly mold people into who they are on an elementary forefront. However, no matter what beliefs and concepts that we subscribe to in our lives, fighting the good fight in ensuring that black lives matter doesn’t just start and end today with a retweet, like, or video. Instead, all of us need to do our part to be in this ongoing conversation even when this battle has completed. Ultimately, as Wallace tweeted, “It’s inclusion. We’re one race…humans.”
■■ Ty Dillon is one of many drivers speaking out against racism.

HARVICKDEFINED: NASCAR THROUGHATHE CONTINUED YEARS: ‘HAPPY’ DRIVE FOR HITS DIVERSITY THE HALF CENTURY MARK
A CONTINUED DRIVE FOR DIVERSITY There have only been eight African-American drivers to ever race in NASCAR’s Cup Series. After a pilot project by three race teams in 2003, in 2004, NASCAR created Drive for Diversity, a developmental program created to help get minority and female drivers behind the wheel and on to the track. Aside from pushing for more diversity inside the race car, D4D also looked at increasing diversity among sponsorship, ownership, and support roles in the sport. In the wake of national protests against Confederate monuments, in 2015, NASCAR also made an effort to distance itself from the Confederate flag. The governing body released a statement leaning towards “an all-inclusive atmosphere” at races, asking fans to “refrain from displaying the Confederate Flag at our facilities and NASCAR events.” Here are the eight African American drivers who have raced in NASCAR’s premier series. 0 4 0

RANDY BETHEA
BETHEA’S LONE START CAME ON MAY 25, 1975, WHEN he raced in the World 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. And who was the man who made it possible for Bethea to race at Charlotte? None other than Humpy Wheeler. Bethea qualified 39th for the race, out of 40, and finished 33rd. Finishing the World 600 is an accomplishment in itself as it is still the longest race (600 miles) of any NASCAR race. 0 4 6

ON JULY 15, 1971, GEORGE WILTSHIRE COMPETED IN THE Islip 250, a short-track race at Islip Speedway in Islip, N.Y. Wiltshire, a Corona, New York native, started the race 29th and dropped out just two laps in finishing one spot up in 28th. The race was won by Richard Petty. On August 3, 1975, Wiltshire started the Purolator 500 at Pocono International Raceway. He completed just 15 of the race’s 0 4 7

WENDELL SCOTT’S FIRST TOP-TIER NASCAR RACE was the Spartanburg 200 in Spartanburg, SC on March 4, 1961. Two years later on Dec. 1, 1963, he won at the Jacksonville 200 at the ½ mile Speedway Park track in Jacksonville, FL. Scott’s win wasn’t without controversy. Race officials originally declared Buck Baker the winner even though Baker finished the race two laps down. Officials figured out their mistake two hours after the race was over 0 4 8
