How Long will NASCAR’s Season be Suspended? In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp talks through the recent postponing of Atlanta and Miami. NASCAR was previously going to run the next two races without fans in the stands, but opted later to postpone the race entirely out of an abundance of caution. So what will happen to these race dates once the regular season resumes later this year? As 0 0 4

Eric notes, many of the upcoming races, not just the two officially postponed, are also run twice throughout the year. This opens the possibility for doubleheader make-up races without too much schedule disruption. But what about TV contracts? How will they account for practice and qualifying, and will they be broadcast? Eric talks us through it in this week’s episode of Out of the Groove.

classic Nascar races to watch on youtube With the NASCAR season on hold to help fight the spread of a worldwide pandemic commonly known as the Coronavirus, Sunday’s scheduled NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway was postponed until a yet-to-be-determined date. While fans everywhere patiently wait for the United States’ No. 1 motorsports series to hopefully return to action in the relatively near future, following are five classic NASCAR races worth watching in full on YouTube while you’re all hunkered down and focused on avoiding contact with other people in the coming days and perhaps weeks. by Jared Turner

2000 Pontiac Excitement 400 at Richmond Raceway
A
lmost 20 years ago, Dale Earnhardt Jr. scored the first of three NASCAR Cup Series victories he would eventually post at Richmond Raceway. For good reasons, Earnhardt Jr.’s maiden Richmond victory couldn’t have been more memorable. In addition to being Earnhardt Jr.’s first triumph at the popular short track, it marked only his second victory as a driver in NASCAR’s premier series (his first came a few weeks earlier at Texas Motor Speedway). Also significant was how Earnhardt Jr. won — by batting his father, NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Sr., for a victory. “That was something that made me really proud,” Earnhardt Jr. said. Once Earnhardt Jr. got around his father in the closing laps, he still had to pass race leader Elliott Sadler and fend off a spirited charge from Terry Labonte. “To win two races so quickly in my first year was a big deal,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “It was like, ‘OK, yeah, Dale Jr. has arrived.’”

rom 1985-1997, any driver who could win three of NASCAR’s four “crownjewel” races — the Daytona 500, the spring Talladega race, the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway — would earn an extra $1 million payday dubbed the “Winston Million” and awarded courtesy of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, whose Winston brand was the longtime title sponsor of NASCAR’s premier series. In 1985, the first year of the Winston Million program, Bill Elliott took the victory at Darlington and with it the coveted million dollar bonus that only further cemented his rise as one of NASCAR’s most elite and popular drivers. Elliott’s Darlington win and accompanying million dollar check didn’t come without drama, however, as Elliott — running second behind Cale Yarborough just over 40 laps from the finish — emerged the leader after Yarborough’s car suffered a power steering failure, spewing heavy smoke right in Elliott’s path. Somehow Elliott managed to avoid wrecking and took the lead. He never trailed again.

lmost universally considered the most important race in NASCAR history, the 1979 Daytona 500 changed the trajectory of the sport forever. In addition to being the first NASCAR race ever broadcast live on network television (CBS) and the biggest race on the schedule, the 500 featured a thrilling and highly controversial finish. Donnie Allison and Cale Yarborough had distanced themselves from the field and ran 1-2 on the final lap before their cars body-slammed each other on the backstretch while battling door-to-door for the lead. The contact sent both drivers spinning and allowed Richard Petty to score his seventh Daytona 500 victory. But the real fireworks occurred after the race when Bobby Allison — stopping by to check on brother Donnie — parked his car near Donnie’s and approached Yarborough, who promptly punched him with his helmet. The two drivers then engaged in a brief a but made-for-TV-style fisticuffs as the entire country looked on in shock and awe.

1992 Hooters 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway
O
ne of the most consequential and exciting days in NASCAR history came in the 1992 season finale held at Atlanta Motor Speedway. In addition to being legend Richard Petty’s last race and future superstar Jeff Gordon’s first, the race also featured a hotly contested championship battle involving six drivers who all entered the finale with a mathematical shot at the crown (there was no playoff or Championship 4 back then). Ultimately, it came down to a three-way fight for the title among Davey Allison, Bill Elliott and Alan Kulwicki. After appearing for a while as though Allison might claim his first series crown, it wasn’t meant to be. Allison was caught up in a wreck with Ernie Irvan, leaving Elliott and Kulwicki to battle it out in the final laps. And battle they did, as Elliott won the race but Kulwicki — with a second-place finish — took the championship by 10 points, the result of leading just one more lap than Elliott.

1998 Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway
A
rguably the greatest and most popular NASCAR victory of all time came in the 40th annual Daytona 500 when seven-time premier series champion Dale Earnhardt — in his 20th attempt to win The Great American Race — finally exorcised the demons of Daytona 500s past and captured the sport’s biggest and most prestigious event. Earnhardt, who led 107 of the race’s 200 laps and fended off late challenges from Bobby Labonte and Jeremy Mayfield among others, celebrated his long-awaited Daytona 500 triumph by cutting number threes in the infield grass with his race car. Then, before he could reach Victory Lane, he was greeted by what remains to this day the longest receiving line in NASCAR history as one or more representatives of every team came out to pit road to offer their congratulations to the fan-favorite and would be NASCAR Hall of Famer. Sadly, three years after Daytona became the site of his greatest triumph, Earnhardt lost his life in the 2001 Daytona 500.

Just Sayin’
Rescheduling Atlanta and Homestead dates shouldn’t be too tough
▶
Atlanta Motor Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway won’t be able to host their respective March race weekends due to the Coronavirus outbreak that led to NASCAR postponing them. But provided there aren’t more races that ultimately have to be rescheduled, the good news for AMS and Homestead is that neither track should have a problem landing an alternative race date — even if it means racing there on a weeknight or moving to late summer when NASCAR has back-to-back off weekends available for a potential make-up. Jared Turner ▶ iRacing was all the rage on a Sunday afternoon With Sunday’s Atlanta race postponement, iRacing became the buzz of the NASCAR world as a number of well-known NASCAR personalities — including former driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., crew chief Chad Knaus, and current Cup Series drivers Bubba Wallace, William Byron and Alex Bowman — competed germ-free in a virtual 100-lap race appropriately dubbed The Replacements 100. The race, which was available for live online viewing and held on iRacing’s entirely realistic version of Atlanta Motor Speedway, offered a suitable alternative for everyone on a day bereft of real-life racing.
■■ Atlanta Motor Speedway will look to host a reschedule Cup Series race later in the season.
0 1 8
▶ Unscheduled break in NASCAR season is far from ideal While NASCAR had no choice but to postpone this past weekend’s event at Atlanta and next weekend’s event at Homestead-Miami, we can only hope this hiccough in the schedule is short-lived. After all, race postponements or cancelations equate to a lot of money lost for racetracks, host cities, teams and sponsors. Not to mention the disappointment felt by people who had planned to attend these races. As necessary and unavoidable as taking a break for the Coronavirus might be, it’s still bad for business.

Parker Kligerman by Rob Tiongson
Throughout the NASCAR season, Rob Tiongson will interview various drivers in NASCAR. This week, he talks with NASCAR driver and NASCAR on NBC analyst Parker Kligerman.
■■ Parker Kligerman drove the #96 Toyota in 2019
▶▶ Despite your NASCAR career, have you ever considered driving in F1? “Yeah. That was really where I wanted to go when I first started racing. Then reality kicked in around 16 years old and I realized I had no money and I was not going to make it to Europe on hopes and dreams. At the time, NASCAR was booming, and I was a fan as well. I’ve always been a bit of a motorsports fan. And I felt like there was a lot more opportunity here. I brought my realism down to the fact that I would one day like to test one, a real test – not a show car test, but like an actual test. How do I get there one day? I’ll never know. But that would be really cool.” ▶▶ If Hollywood approached you to do a biopic, what actor would you hire? And you can include an NBC personality! “I’m going to say this name, and it probably won’t come out at the same time, but it’s kinda coincidental because I’ve never really thought about that. Of course, you’d be like, ‘Yeah! Brad Pitt can play me. He’s the man! Like Leonardo DiCaprio! Hell yeah!’ I’ll take Matt Damon and Chris Pratt. I’m thinking of guys with blonde hair. Matthew McConaughey doesn’t really fit, but hey! I’ll take it. Any of those would be cool. And then, NBC personalities? Kyle Petty.” Kyle Petty would have to trim his hair, you know. “Yeah! He’d have to change his hair. But I’d want him to play me. Actually, take my life and live it how he would’ve and see what the difference was.” 0 2 0

Josh Williams Eyes His Way Towards Replacements 100 Win at Atlanta by Rob Tiongson

hile the actual on-track action may be on hold for NASCAR, that didn’t stop many of today’s stars and figures from having a fun race thanks to iRacing and Podium eSports. Certainly, in just a matter of over 14 hours, 35 entries quickly formed up to create Sunday afternoon’s Replacements 100 at a simulated Atlanta Motor Speedway. Truly, it was an impressive field that included talents like William Byron, Garrett Smithley, Bubba Wallace, and Alex Bowman from the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR XFINITY Series racers Chase Briscoe, Justin Haley, and Justin Allgaier, Cup spotters Josh Williams, TJ Majors, and Coleman Pressley, Tyler

Overstreet, the public relations representative for Martin Truex Jr’s No. 19 Cup Series team, country musician Tim Duggar, retired NFL linebacker Kyle Long, and NASCAR on NBC analysts Dale Earnhardt Jr and Parker Kligerman. Other than needing great computers and gaming equipment, the field of 35 prepared for a truly competitive race at this rough but competitive 1.54-mile quad-oval. With a practice round followed by a qualifying session, Byron topped the chart and seemed like the man to beat in the Peach State. Despite scoring the pole for the 100-lap race, Byron relinquished the top spot to Williams, spotter for Ryan Blaney’s No. 12 Team Penske Ford entry. For much of the race, Williams answered the bell, holding off Byron, Kligerman, Majors, Overstreet, and Steven Steffen, racers who tried their mightiest to emerge triumphant at Atlanta. In the words of the late Buddy Baker, Williams had one eye in the mirror and the other looking at the front of his windshield. Cool, calm, and collected,
Williams drove with absolute confidence, timing his restarts with perfection and even throwing a brave block on Byron during the waning laps of the race. Behind the top-two were some chaotic moments, including a lap 47 crash on the backstretch that involved Wallace, Kevin Iannarrelli, Gary Sexton, and Justin Haley. Ultimately, on the final restart that came on lap 62, Byron tried different grooves to get past Williams, but it was all for naught. On this day, Williams emerged triumphant in front of Byron, Steffen, Majors, Kligerman, Overstreet, Smithley, Earnhardt Jr, Wallace, and Pressley. For at least two hours on March 15th, race fans and those in the NASCAR community had something else to consider aside from the coronavirus crisis. 0 2 3

NASCAR’s Response to COVID-19 Megathread In light of NASCAR’s announcement at 1PM ET regarding “near-term race event scheduling”, we’re starting this megathread for Official news regarding upcoming races and how/if they will be effected. We’ll update this thread with any official information.
▶▶ It’d be foolish not to talk about the coronavirus endemic that’s impacted our entire world. Certainly, these are uncertain times in almost every walk of life for anyone. Still, NASCAR nation is taking this crisis in stride as fans look for ways to make for the best of things. From suggesting old NASCAR races to watch, potential schedule changes, to sim racing, a common thread seen with these selected reactions, by all means, fans are coping as well as possible.

“The Replacements” race to be ran tomorrow on iRacing by many Cup regulars and Crew Chiefs
▶▶ It’s incredible how quickly and organized drivers, crew chiefs, and various personalities in NASCAR banded together to schedule this race. Where else can you find William Byron, Dale Earnhardt Jr, and Ben Rhodes compete against Kevin Hamlin, Chad Knaus, and yes, Kyle Long, the retired NFL linebacker? Whether you found time to watch this live or caught it after this issue published, e-Sports is a great way to cope and get through this time as a community with our friends.

Dale jr agrees that Fox and NBC needs to start showing much older races (any race besides the one from the previous year)
▶▶ Whether it’s a rain delay or the suspension of NASCAR activity due to the crisis, it’s certainly polarizing when networks air races from the prior season. Leave it to NASCAR on NBC personality and two-time Daytona 500 champion Dale Earnhardt Jr to chime in and ask for actual classic races.

A competing stock car series is formed and they’re building all new race tracks in nonNASCAR cities. What kind of generic odd-sounding tracks do we get?
▶▶ Admit it, you’ve always wondered about a Dayton 500 or if Utah could have a Salt Lake City 500. As the NFL had the XFL to consider, fans have wondered about NASCAR’s competing stock car series for years. If this became reality, would you attend a race in your locale?
12
Does Nascar have too many Villains?
▶▶ This could be a matter of perception to some while others view this topic as a fact. Still, it’s interesting to ponder how fans perceive who serve as protagonists and antagonists in the major three series. As the sport endures changes with its talents, what traits do fans look for?

Tweetstorm Compiled by Rob Tiongson
▶▶ If ROAR! had a Radio Sweetheart segment, I guess Tweetstorm would serve as its equivalent with Jimmie Johnson leading the way with meaningful social media posts. Prior to the new wave of fans in the 12 years, Johnson was accused of being too vanilla. However, as that supposition was debunked, fans have gotten to know about this legendary driver serving as a man of the people. Understanding and respectful, Johnson speaks for all of us once more with this crisis. 0 2 6
Atlanta Rearview: Mar. 16, 2020
▶▶ While frustration and anger were prevalent given the fluid changes for the postponed Atlanta and Homestead race weekends, Kurt Busch offered reassuring words and insights that would comfort not only race fans, but our world. In just one tweet and a 47 second video clip, Busch offered his support to NASCAR fans and radiated so much positivity and optimism, perhaps it’s something that others could follow at any time. Ultimately, Busch’s words were inspirational and that of a true champion.
▶▶ They say that things stay on the internet forever. In this case, Aaron Clay Burns, PR for Charlotte Motor Speedway, provided a photo of 2018 NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano from the vault. While Logano raced a legend car as a kid, he’s quickly becoming a legend in Cup racing.
▶▶ Double A from FOX NASCAR provided a true golden tweet that could mean more than wrapped presents or goodies in stockings. The co-host of Race Hub and FOX NASCAR’s XFINITY Series races speaks truth even with his green sense of humor that some of our more mature readers jokingly considered.
▶▶ Great minds think alike, and FOX NASCAR’s Kaitlyn Vincie proposed this gem of an idea that fans and drivers considered. Vincie, since you made a good with this, I’d say you have better fortune telling that Ms. Cleo or forecasting skills than some meteorologists. Still, keep up the good work!
▶▶ It’s truly neat hearing drivers like Bubba Wallace sharing stories of their past with their Cup Series comrades. The reason that many folks clamor for support of local short track series is to build loyal fanbases that can remember where these talents came from before they strike paydirt and fame. 0 2 7

Experience security and peace of mind with the Honda EG2800i Inverter Generator. It provides quiet power, long run times, and a 30A receptacle for easy connection to a transfer switch. And at only 67 lbs., it’s trusted, portable home backup and DIY power where you need it, when you need it—for your home, and life. Find out more at gen.honda.com.
Please read the owner’s manual before operating your Honda Power Equipment and never use in an enclosed or partially enclosed area where you could be exposed to odorless, poisonous carbon monoxide. Connection of a generator to house power requires a transfer device to avoid possible injury to power company personnel. Consult a qualified electrician.
