Was the New Aero Package a Success at Texas?

T

his week brings us a special episode of Out of the Groove powered by our sister publication NASCAR Pole Position magazine. We sent Eric to Texas Motor Speedway so he could see first-hand, live and up close, the effects of the new aero package introduced for 1.5 Mile tracks. How did the new package turn out? It was designed, of course, to help reduce the number of races that deteriorate into single file parades behind the leader, an issue that’s been creeping up for a number of years but was really on full display last season, when Kevin Harvick seemed all but uncatchable at the mile and a halves.

Bristol PReview: April 4, 2019

The added variable that we haven’t seen so far this season at any of the other new package runs was the fact that Texas has a newer paved surface, far from the bumps and bounces of Atlanta or Las Vegas. What effect, if any, did this have on the racing at Texas, especially now that the teams have had a chance to fine tune their adjustments? And of course, this episode of Out of the Groove has the patented Groovy Gauge, giving NASCAR fans the definitive - well, OK, maybe not the definitive - answer on where Texas lands in the history of NASCAR. What did it rate? Watch the video and find out!

Bristol’s tight track could reignite feuds

T

here’s no track in NASCAR quite like Bristol Motor Speedway — a fast, high-banked .533-mile oval that has produced some of the greatest racing in NASCAR history. Needless to say, it’s anyone’s best guess what might go down in Sunday afternoon’s Food City 500. Here are five key storylines to watch for this weekend at the popular short track in East Tennessee. When will Martin Truex Jr. Win With JGR?

I

n his first season with Joe Gibbs Racing after five mostly successful seasons at Furniture Row Racing, Martin Truex Jr. is winless in seven starts. While Truex’s absence from Victory Lane this season isn’t shocking, it is mildly surprising in light of how fast the JGR cars have been and the talent that he and crew chief Cole Pearn bring to the powerhouse organization. Will Sunday’s race at Bristol be Truex’s big breakthrough with his new team? Truex has five top-10 finishes in his first seven starts with JGR and is seventh in the standings. However, Truex is winless in 26 career starts at Bristol and has failed to finish in the top 20 in his last three outings here. In fact, you have to go all the way back to the spring of 2012 — when Truex was with Michael Waltrip Racing — to find his last top-five finish at Bristol.

A Fourth Consecutive Bristol Winner Named Busch

T

he last three races at Bristol Motor Speedway have belonged to drivers with the last name Busch. Kurt Busch won under the lights last August at the .533-mile oval after younger brother Kyle won the two previous races in Thunder Valley. Combined, the Busch siblings have captured a total of 13 Monster Energy Series races here, with the younger Busch holding a one-win advantage over his brother. Kurt returns to Bristol this year with a new team in Chip Ganassi Racing, after winning last fall’s race with Stewart-Haas Racing. Kyle, of course, has remained the driver of the familiar No. 18 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. While Kyle is one of three drivers with two victories already in 2019, Kurt is seeking his first triumph with his new team and his first win since going to Victory Lane at Bristol last August. Both Busch brothers should factor heavily into the mix this weekend.

A Nail-biter Of A Finish

T

he 2019 season has been mostly bereft of close finishes, but look for that to change this weekend at Bristol — a track where nail-biters are the rule and not the exception. Think about all the thrillers that have transpired over the years at the Tennessee short track, and you will marvel not only at how often they’ve occurred but at how exciting a number of them have been. For example, who will ever forget the late Dale Earnhardt knocking Terry Labonte across the finish line here in the fall of 1995? How about Earnhardt spinning Labonte (or was it “rattling his cage?”) in Turn 2 on the final lap of the 1999 night race? Even when drivers don’t completely wreck one another at Bristol, the familiar “bump-and-run” method is often utilized. For whatever reason, drivers will stop at nothing to win here, and the result is often finishes that go down to the wire.

Testy Drivers and Temper Tantrums

G

ood luck finding a track anywhere on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series tour that is more prone than Bristol Motor Speedway to invoke boisterous displays of emotion often fueled by disagreements that start on the track. “Thunder Valley,” as Bristol is commonly known, has been the site of some of the most heated disagreements in NASCAR history. Witness, for example, the time Jeff Gordon emerged from his car and abruptly shoved Matt Kenseth on pit road moments after being spun by Kenseth in the race’s final laps. Likewise, no one will forget about the time — after the 1995 Bristol night race — when Rusty Wallace threw a water bottle at rival Dale Earnhardt, triggering a post-race garage area confrontation that came on the heels of Earnhardt knocking Wallace out of the race. Bristol, perhaps more so than anything, is known for raw emotions. Sunday’s showdown should be no exception.

The Next Step In A Possible Hendrick Motorsports Resurgence

A

fter a painfully slow start to the season, Hendrick Motorsports showed its first real signs of life last weekend at Texas Motor Speedway, where Hendrick teammates Jimmie Johnson and William Byron finished fifth and sixth, respectively, after Hendrick drivers swept the top three positions in qualifying with Johnson leading the field to the green flag. Now, the 12-time championship-winning organization, which hasn’t won a race since Chase Elliott went to Victory Lane at Kansas Speedway last fall, is looking to take it up yet another notch as the series moves to the high-banked, .533-mile short that is Bristol Motor Speedway. Last fall’s race at Bristol was a good one for Team Hendrick as Elliott (third), Alex Bowman (eighth) and Johnson (ninth) all came home in the top 10. Bristol is also the site of Johnson’s next-to-most-recent victory, which the seven-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion recorded in April 2017.

drivers to watch at Bristol

By Jared Turner ▶▶ Kyle busch. Kyle Busch has won two of the last three Monster Energy Series races at Bristol and owns a total of seven premier series victories at the Tennessee short track. Given how strong Busch has been just about everywhere in 2019, he’s the prohibitive favorite to end up in Victory Lane this weekend. ▶▶ Kurt Busch. Kurt Busch is the most recent Bristol winner, having prevailed last August. Incredibly, Busch’s six victories at Bristol have been divvied up among three different teams — Roush Fenway Racing, Team Penske and Stewart-Haas Racing. If Busch can win on Sunday with Chip Ganassi Racing, it will be the fourth team he’s taken to Victory Lane in Thunder Valley. . ▶▶ Brad Keselowski. A two-time Bristol winner, Brad Keselowski hasn’t gone to Victory Lane here since 2012. However, he’s already won twice in 2019 — including most recently at Martinsville Speedway, a short track that doesn’t bear many similarities to Bristol but is a short track, nevertheless. ▶▶ Joey Logano. Joey Logano owns a pair of Bristol victories, both coming in the August night race. The reigning Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion won earlier this season at Las Vegas and appears to be well on his way to another championshipcaliber campaign. ▶▶ Jimmie Johnson. Boasting a renewed sense of confidence on the heels of his best overall weekend of the season, Jimmie Johnson has high hopes for Bristol, where he’s a two-time winner and most recently triumphed two years ago this weekend.

n May 25, 2014, Jimmie Johnson, driver of the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, collected his fourth-career Coca-Cola 600 victory at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The El Cajun, Calif., native sealed the deal by passing Matt Kenseth with nine laps remaining to log his first victory of the season. Johnson broke a 13-race winless streak dating back to Texas Motor Speedway in November of 2013 and put to rest any concerns about the team’s chemistry. He would go on to win three more Cup events by season’s end. Johnson dominated the race by leading 10 times for 165 of 400 laps in NASCAR’s longest race. Kevin Harvick finished second, followed by Kenseth and Carl Edwards. Johnson broke a tie with Darrell Waltrip and Bobby Allison for

Cup victories at the track with seven. Three career wins at the Concord, N.C., track were logged in October 500-mile events. “To deal with all the things that are thrown at a race team through the evening with the track changing, the mechanical obstacles that you have to overcome, keeping an engine alive, tires alive, all of it, it means a lot,” Johnson said in post-race interviews. “It’s a serious team effort to finish 600 miles. And then win here, especially as hard as we had to run throughout the night, the pace we had to keep up, I’m certainly proud of that.”

yler Ankrum became a NASCAR champion at just 17 years of age when the native of Bernardino, California, won four races en route to securing the 2018 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship. That effort during his rookie NASCAR season earned Ankrum a promotion and he became a full-time NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series driver for DGR-Crosley after celebrating his 18th birthday on March 6. Ankrum’s racing journey began at age 9 in Quarter Midgets and he earned multiple local, regional and national championships in the small, open-wheel cars before advancing to Late Model competition. His first Late Model victory came at North Carolina’s Caraway Speedway when he was 14.

Bristol PReview: April 4, 2019

The young racer eventually graduated to Super Late Models and made sporadic starts with the CARS Super Late Model Tour, where he had 11 top-10 finishes in 17 races during four seasons. In addition to running the full K&N Pro Series East schedule a year ago, Ankrum made two Truck Series starts with a best finish of sixth at ISM Raceway in November. “Honestly, this is a dream come true,” said Ankrum about racing in the Truck Series. “It’s crazy to think that something I’ve been a fan of for so long, I’m now going to be a part of it. It’s even more special that I get to stay at DGR-Crosley and progress within their organization.”

msg: making racing safer TM

By dan guttenplan

A

cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One health issue that affects NASCAR racecar drivers and fans alike is neck and back pain. Cormier shared some preventative measures one can take to help avoid lower back pain. “Outside of the red flags – like a fever, weight loss that is not explained by a change in diet, suspicion of cancers, long-term steroid use, or a weak immune system – we can look at simple things to prevent lower back pain,” Cormier said. “We’ll take a look at improving the diet, weight loss, smoking habits and exercise.”

0 3 0

Bristol PReview: April 4, 2019

A patient can also strengthen his or her core to help prevent lower back pain. Improving one’s range of motion and maintaining an active lifestyle are also helpful preventative measures. In the event that a patient is already affected by lower back pain, Cormier recommends he or she take an anti-inflammatory, such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol – if the patient has been cleared by a doctor. Avoiding carrying large bags, briefcases and purses can also limit the stress on a person’s back.

health and wellness “Watch your posture,” Cormier said. “Make sure you’re not overloading your back. Consider switching to a briefcase or bag on wheels.” One of the most common causes of upper back and neck pain in this day and age is poor posture when sending text messages and looking down at smart phones. Writing for extended periods of time without stretching your neck is another common cause. “It’s the result of constantly looking down at a computer or phone,” Cormier said. “It’s important to think about posture.” Neck trauma is a more serious issue that can be managed non-surgically with traction

therapy, physical therapy or an interventional procedure, depending on the results of one’s MRI. Racecar drivers also are at risk of suffering compression fractures. Austin Therriault and Aric Almirola have both suffered those types of injuries in the recent past. “When you’re driving at high speeds, the spine absorbs the ‘G’ forces of the wreck, which predisposes one to the possibility of spinal fractures,” Cormier said. “Protect your body by consistently exercising for a few minutes three to four times weekly, and maintain a healthy life style, and your body will be significantly optimized to endure the physical challenges ahead.”

Introducing Brain Armor new product that excites Cormier in terms of improving brain function is the Brain Armor nutritional supplement. The product is the work of Dr. Julian Bailes, a recognized leader in the field of neurosurgery and the impact of brain injury on brain function. The supplement includes Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which help the human brain possess the ability to grow new nerve cells, or neurons. Cormier said that patients tested after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty

A

Acids were less likely to incur brain-related injuries. Also, patients that suffered brain-related injuries were more likely to recover after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty Acids. “That component of the nervous system is huge,” Cormier said. “We found that people who are rich

Bristol PReview: April 4, 2019

in DHA and EPA levels are more protected with regard to brain function. That drew me in. If we pursue that in racecar drivers, we can protect them with a supplement like Brain Armor that includes fish oil and Omega-3 Fatty Acids.” Fish oils are also available for purchase over the counter. Cormier said the only downside of ingesting fish oil is that of its blood thinning properties. “Other than that, we haven’t seen any downside,” Cormier said. Find out more at brain-armor.com.

The team has also created a humorous video surrounding the episode at Daytona mixed of interesting facts and tidbits about the ongoing epidemic. “It was unfortunate what we had to experience at Daytona, but this is a prime opportunity for us to turn a negative into a positive thanks to my sponsor EAT SLEEP RACE,” offered Joe Graf Jr. “Who couldn’t use $1,000 to help with their every day needs all with a vow to help spread our message? It’s a win-win for everyone.” Graf Jr. will announce the winner of the contest next month at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway where the 20-year-old returns to the 2.66-mile superspeedway after drafting into the spotlight by being a part of the closest finish in the series’ 66-year history – crossing the start-finish line in a dead heat against competitor Zane Smith. Graf Jr. lost the race by 0.0029 seconds, a photo finish. The winner does not need to be present to win and no purchase is necessary.

NASCAR PETS

Drivers and their furry friends By Jared Turner

J

ohn Hunter Nemechek’s house could be likened to an animal farm these days. A pet lover from childhood, the now 21-year-old NASCAR Xfinity Series driver is the owner and caretaker of three rambunctious but friendly dogs: a 3-year-old Goldendoodle named Layla, a 3-year-old Charcoal Lab named Tucker and a 1-year-old Black Lab named Nyx. With his trio of furry friends to care for, Nemechek is never concerned about boredom. “Everyone jokes around and sends me pictures with a bunch of puppies running into a house and stuff like that,” he said. “I feel like that’s

0 5 2

Bristol PReview: April 4, 2019

what I have right now with these three. They’re definitely a handful, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” While Nemechek is still relatively new to life with three dogs, his passion for pets is nothing new. “I’ve always had a love for animals,” said the son of longtime NASCAR Cup Series driver Joe Nemechek. “We used to own a horse farm. So I was around horses, but my passion has always been for dogs. They’re a man’s best friend. Being able to walk in the door to them, hang out with them and hug them and play with them, it’s a lot of fun.”

SURECAN ▶▶ The award-winning SureCan was designed with all of your gas-powered machines in mind. With patented technology, the SureCan offers its user the best experience they have ever had with a fuel can. The flexible spout rotates down more than 180 degrees and fits perfectly into any machine’s fill location, while the thumb-release trigger on top controls the flow. By pulling straight back on the safety trigger and then down on the thumb button, fuel is released immediately while you stay in complete control. When you notice your tank is almost full, slowly release the thumb button and allow the excess fuel to drain from the top of the spout before rotating it back up. No more bending over, tipping your fuel can forward and holding it in an awkward position. The SureCan is a high-quality fuel dispensing machine. Learn more at surecanusa.com. 0 5 6
