The good news is there’s nothing to stop fans from filling this hiatus with reruns of old races. Thankfully, YouTube has a treasure trove of them — in their entirety, no less. Following are five classic races that every NASCAR fan should take the time to watch while they’re stuck inside the house in the coming days. BY JA RED TURNER

lready known as “The Intimidator” for his aggressive style of driving, Dale Earnhardt took on a new moniker — that of “One Tough Customer” — in the summer of 1996 at Watkins Glen International. Dealing with the pain of a broken sternum and collarbone suffered in a harrowing crash just two weekends earlier at Talladega Superspeedway, Earnhardt went out and put his No. 3 car on the pole at The Glen. But that accomplishment, though certainly significant, paled in comparison to what Earnhardt did just two days later in the race when he led 54 of 90 laps before ultimately finishing sixth. Punctuating Earnhardt’s performance was the fact that it came on a 2.45-mile road course that is notoriously one of NASCAR’s toughest and most physically-demanding tracks. Also notable was the fact that Earnhardt’s team had a relief driver on standby, only for the seven-time champion to refuse to get out of the car and battle through tremendous pain to the bitter end

ASCAR has always been a family-oriented sport, but it’s hard to find a more memorable family moment than the one that went down in February 1988. The setting was Daytona International Speedway, the race was the Daytona 500 and the participants in this family fairytale were legendary driver Bobby Allison and his young son, Davey, who was beginning just his second season in NASCAR’s premier division. To the delight of virtually everyone watching that day, and the especially those from the Allison family’s hometown of Hueytown, Alabama, the Allisons came home 1-2 with Bobby taking the win and Davey finishing second. Over the final laps, Davey hounded his father’s back bumper but was never able to complete a pass. Afterward, the father and son poured beer on each other while celebrating together in Victory Lane. “When I was a kid, I used to dream of a 1-2 finish,” Davey said. “But I dreamed of it the other way around.”

hat had long seemed like a pipe dream became a glorious reality on August 6, 1994, when NASCAR stock cars competed for the first time at Indianapolis Motor Speedway — a world-famous 2.5-mile venue synonymous with open-wheel racing legends and lore. NASCAR’s maiden trip to the fabled Brickyard certainly disappoint. In fact, it couldn’t have featured a more fairytale ending, thanks to the heroics of a then 23-year-old Jeff Gordon, who was born in Vallejo, California but raised not far from IMS in Pittsboro, Indiana. Driving his now-iconic No. 24 Rainbow-colored Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, Gordon made the winning pass on Ernie Irvan with five laps to go and held on to score an emotional victory in front of a partisan crowd consisting largely of native Hoosiers. For Gordon, who was in just his second year of full-time competition in NASCAR’s premier series, this was the first of five triumphs he would ultimately capture on the historic Indy hardtop.

decade after instituting a season-ending playoff for its premier series, NASCAR shook things up once again by making its premier division’s final race of 2014 a “winner-take-all” finale where four drivers — dubbed the “Championship 4” — would arrive with equal points and an equal opportunity at being crowned champion. The first ever Championship 4 race, held in South Florida at Homestead-Miami Speedway, featured Kevin Harvick, Ryan Newman, Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano as the quartet of finalists set to race straight up for NASCAR’s biggest prize. Predictably, the championship wasn’t settled until the last turn of the last lap when Harvick held off a hard-charging Newman by half a second to take both the race victory and the title in one swoop. Hamlin, meanwhile, faded to finish seventh after giving up the lead with eight laps to go. Logano — besieged by a rash of late-race miscues on pit road — came home 16th and last among the Championship 4.

ne of the most anticipated races of every NASCAR Cup Series season is the annual summer night race at Bristol Motor Speedway — the .533-mile highbanked oval appropriately nicknamed “Thunder Valley.” Arguably the most exciting and controversial finish in BMS history occurred on August 28, 1999 when Terry Labonte, on fresher tires than race leader Dale Earnhardt, caught Earnhardt’s No. 3 car coming to the white flag. But as quickly as Labonte cleared Earnhardt, the seven-time champion drilled Labonte’s left rear quarter panel in the middle of turns 1 and 2, sending the popular Texan into a spin that collected several cars. Earnhardt was scored the race winner but was greeted in Victory Lane by a loud chorus of boos from disapproving spectators. Asked about his controversial bump of Labonte, Earnhardt delivered what would go down as one of the famous quotes in NASCAR history, saying, “I didn’t mean to really turn him around. I meant to rattle his cage, though.”

RECAPPING JIMMIE JOHNSON’S NASCAR CAREER

■■ Jimmie Johnson’s victory in the 2005 Coca-Cola 600 took 5 hours and 24 minutes.

A MARATHON VICTORY FOR JJ BY JA RED TURNER

J

immie Johnson has turned in a lot of memorable performances over the course of his illustrious NASCAR career, but few have been as electrifying as his drive to victory in the 2005 edition of the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. In pursuit of his third win in NASCAR’s longest race, Johnson spent much of the 600-mile distance battling a less-than-dominant car that didn’t appear to be headed for Victory Lane. But thanks in large part to some major attrition that took its toll in the form of 22 cautions that wiped out a considerable chunk of the field and caused the race to take an inordinately long 5 hours and 24 minutes to complete, Johnson was running fourth and still in the hunt when the race restarted for the final time with five laps to go. Pushing his No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy to its absolute maximum capabilities, Johnson closed in on race leader Bobby Labonte on the white flag lap and inched ahead of Labonte at the checkered flag to win by a scant .027 seconds. Johnson, who led only 11 of 400 laps, executed a bold move

to Labonte’s outside coming through Charlotte Motor Speedway’s double dogleg to steal the victory and continue his streak of wins in the marathon-style race that even today stands as NASCAR’s ultimate driver endurance test. “Three 600’s — that’s just amazing,” Johnson said. “Tonight was a tough race for us. We didn’t have the best car until the end, when it mattered.” Johnson’s last-lap heroics allowed him to not only get the win but also to maintain the series points lead — a position he held for most of the season up until the last five weeks when he faded and ultimately finished a disappointing fifth in the standings. The next season, however, began Johnson’s remarkable run of a NASCAR-record five consecutive premier series championships.

▶  YOUR FAMILY HAS BEEN PART OF THE WORLD OF NASCAR OVER THE YEARS. HOW SPECIAL IS IT TO CARRY THEIR LEGACY? “My family has been involved in NASCAR for decades, and continuing the legacy is a dream come true. My grandfather worked on Jim Reed’s car, which is in the Darlington Museum. They won the 10th Southern 500 in 1959. My mother and father met at the racetrack, and I basically grew up on pit road. I always knew I wanted to work in the sport, and it took a lot of hard work and sacrifice to get to where I am. But I wouldn’t change a thing.” ▶  GIVEN THE GRIND OF A TYPICAL NASCAR SEASON, HOW DO YOU KEEP REFRESHED? “Our schedule is very demanding, and it’s very important to keep refreshed. Our managers do a great job because they understand the grind, but it is important to have a life outside of NASCAR. I love kickboxing and staying in shape. It’s a nice release, physically and mentally. I also rescued a pitbull, Ash, two years ago and I love to spoil her and take her to the lake.” ▶  WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU SHARE TO SOMEONE ASPIRING TO BE IN PR AND COMMUNICATIONS, PARTICULARLY IN MOTORSPORTS? “Learn as much as possible, volunteer, and get real-life experience. What you learn at the track does not compare to what you learn from a textbook in school. Take every opportunity and internship you can.”

any NASCAR drivers, teams, tracks and foundations have been working to offer help in our country’s response to the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Each has stepped up in various ways toward moving closer to eradicating the disease. These are a testament of some of the heartfelt efforts by the NASCAR community. Denny Hamlin, driver of the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, pledged $100 for each lap led in the iRacing Pro Series Invitational race at the virtual Homestead-Miami Speedway on March 22 and $5,000 after winning the race. The donation was given through The NASCAR Foundation and Feed the Children to benefit families in the Homestead-Miami area affected by COVID-19. The total donated by Hamlin was $6,400 after leading 14 laps in the race.

COVID-19 RESPONSE Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 14 Stewart-Hass Racing Ford, also pledged to match Hamlin’s donation of $6,400 through the Kevin Harvick Foundation. Also, Hamlin’s primary sponsor, FedEx, is playing a major role in the fight against COVID-19. According to a release, FedEx recently worked with the U.S. government to quickly move COVID-19 test specimens from more than 50 remote drive-thru testing centers at major retailers across 12 states. This critical mission was a collaborative effort among retailers and healthcare companies to enable quick processing of COVID-19 test specimens to help prevent spread of the virus. To further assist, FedEx Express dedicated 28 flight legs, as well as specialized pick-up and delivery operations, while also using its patented SenseAware® technology and monitoring to help safely transport the test specimens collected. ordan Anderson, driver of the No. 3 in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series, has partnered with Forney Industries, one of America’s longest operating family owned tool, welding equipment and accessory product companies, for the 2020 season. The partnership continues a trend in which Anderson serves as an authentic representative

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: APR. 3, 2020

for his sponsors. He plans to use Forney welding products in his racecar shop in North Carolina. “This partnership is a throwback to how it used to be in the sport,” Anderson said. “We have a small-growing team, and it aligns well with their business. They started with humble beginnings in 1932, and have grown and evolved over time. When I think about the

foundation of racing in NASCAR, I think about the chassis and bodies being welded together. We have to have reliable products that are consistent, and Forney provides those products for us to get out on the race track.” With over 80,000 fans across all the major social networks, Anderson not only provides a fascinating level of access to his fans, but also delivers his sponsors millions of impressions every month purely from his social media content. Over 15 years, he has built his racing career from the ground up, handled several marketing programs from concept to reality, been a brand ambassador for more than two dozen companies, and recorded over 200 race wins and 10 championships along the way. Headquartered in Fort Collins, Colo., Forney was founded in 1932 and introduced the first publicly available arc welder in the 1940s. Today, the company offers close to 5,000 metalworking products within four categories: welding, abrasives, personal protective

equipment and shop tools. Forney Industries issued the following statement: “Forney Industries is proud to partner with Jordan Anderson Racing and support their daily fabrication with our quality welding and metalworking products. The Jordan Anderson racing team represents integrity, hard work and passion which aligns with our company’s values. We’re excited for this partnership and to see what’s in store for this team!” Anderson plans to share the Forney partnership experience with his fans by posting videos of the welding process on his various social media outlets. “I’ll show our followers behind-the-scenes action of welders using the products in the shop,” Anderson said. “We have a couple of guys who focus on fabrication. Being able to let the fans see that process of how the product is used will be really cool. That will be something our followers want to see – what it takes to make a NASCAR racecar.”

AN AUTHENTIC PARTNERSHIP Anderson believes Forney Industries is a natural sponsor for NASCAR racecars due to its trademark green color scheme on its logo and website. “It’s a cool product, and the green color definitely pops,” Anderson said. “I’m excited to work with them. A lot of our fans are potential cli-

ents and purchasers of Forney products.” Throughout his racing career, Anderson has always attempted to form partnerships with companies he believes in. “We talk about authenticity a lot,” Anderson said. “We want to be aligned with sponsors that we’re passionate about.

I’m a big fan of fabrication and seeing the process of a truck going from a couple of pieces of metal to a finished product ready to hit the race track. It’s a blessing to be associated with a product like Forney. They have a vision to create excellence in everything they do, just like our race team strives for.” 0 3 1

ith virtual racing guiding and carrying competitors, teams, fans and media during challenging times, one thing remained the same for the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series. Even after the field of 40 worked a bit of overtime at Bristol Motor Speedway, Ryan Luza decided he wanted to “bat for .500.” In this case, the driver of the No. 53 Williams Ford Mustang was a lot like DJ Khaled’s song as all he does lately is win, win, win, no matter what. While he started 10th, Luza carved his way to the front in spite of

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: APR. 3, 2020

a tough first pit stop in the 253-lap race. Sure, Round 4 of the season featured typical Bristol carnage and tempers, but Luza and his Williams eSports team were no match during a long green flag run. Throughout the race, favorites like Graham A. Bowlin, Ray Alfalla, Michael Guariglia, Logan Clampitt, and John Gorlinsky found themselves tangled in their own versions of the Bristol Stomp. That would not be the case for Luza as he caught race leader Brad Davies on lap 158 before both

avoided a crash involving Michael Conti and Steve Sheehan on the front stretch. On lap 165, Luza dropped the hammer and took the race lead from Davies off Turn 4, and much like his Homestead performance, he held onto the top spot for the remainder of the race. Not even a rash of late race cautions derailed Luza and his Williams eSports team from capturing their second win of the season. At times, Luza’s restart skills were so impressive, one would’ve thought that Ron Hornaday Jr. was piloting the No. 53 car. “We just had an amazing long run car,” Luza said following his 14th career victory. “I had a pit stop malfunction after we got to third in the first run, and I was pretty upset. But we got another long run and came flying through the field after about 30 laps. We pretty much had the field covered on the long run, and I think that really showed.” Among the few racers who mustered any semblance of challenging Luza were Garrett Lowe, who placed second, and defending eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series champion Zack Novak, who finished third. By all means, Lowe had his work cut out for him prior to the start of this race. Starting deep in the field in 30th, the driver of the No. 21 Wood Brothers Gaming Ford methodically picked his way up through the field. One could say he nearly pulled off the Elliott Sadler special at “The Last Colosseum.” “I just needed a little drive off in the corner,” Lowe observed. “We had it on the long run when we passed 30 cars. Just had a rocket ship of a car. We were able to track them down but came up a

little short. We’ll take second.” Meanwhile, Novak finally shook off a tough start with his first podium of the season for Richmond Raceway eSports. The amiable racer seemed pleased but realized there was still work to be done in terms of contending for wins and the title. “We were pretty good, actually,” Novak said. “We didn’t qualify really well, but the racecar was really good. I knew we had top-10 speed. Struggled on the long run and couldn’t pass in the middle. “I’m really happy to finish P3. We really needed that run. We had a really good car and I’m glad we could finally execute.” Rounding out the top-10 finishing order were Conti, points leader Bobby Zalenski, Davies, Alex McCollum, Michael Guest, Caine Cook and Justin Bolton. Round 5 of the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series takes place on Tuesday, April 14 at 9 p.m. EST as the circuit heads to the virtual Richmond Raceway. Luza looks to score his third consecutive win of the season and his second straight victory at “The Action Track.” 0 3 3

RISE & FALL - DENNIT RACING In this very, well, “special” episode of his Rise & Fall documentary series, YouTuber Danny B takes us through all the exciting ups and downs of one of NASCAR’s arguably most well known racing teams - Dennit Racing. Though the story behind Dennit is incredible and unbelievable, Danny B finds a way to tell it like you’ve never heard it before. Dennit Racing’s securing of major sponsorships like Wonderbread and Old Spice seemed like they 0 3 4

couldn’t be true, especially after only so few top performances in the series. Danny also brings us into the sordid world of Formula 1 drivers, dog trainers, and on-track battles with team mates that ultimately led Dennit Racing’s star driver to have a mental breakdown on live TV. But that wouldn’t be the end of Dennit Racing’s story. Check out the latest episode of Danny B’s Rise and Fall series for the complete tale behind one of NASCAR’s biggest stars.

ASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon earned four NASCAR Cup Series championships and won 93 series races while driving the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Interestingly, No. 24 was not the team’s first choice for a car number when adding a third car for the USAC open-wheel sensation. The original plan was to use No. 46 on Gordon’s car, but 24 became the choice after it was learned Paramount Pictures, which produced “Days of

Gordon made his NASCAR Cup Series debut on Nov. 15, 1992, at Atlanta Motor Speedway and drove car No. 24 in 797 starts before retiring from full-time competition at the end of the 2015 season. Overall statistics show that cars carrying No.24 in the NASCAR Cup Series have recorded 679 top-10 finishes in 1,526 starts. Gordon is the only driver to win utilizing the number. Dick Clothier was the first driver to use No. 24 in a NASCAR Cup Series event. Clothier carried the number on his Pontiac in the Feb. 5, 1950, race on the Beach & Road Course in Daytona Beach, Florida. He finished 36th. Longtime independent racer Cecil Gordon made 373 starts in car No. 24, and current Hendrick Motorsports drivers Chase Elliott and William Byron have used the number since Gordon retired.

t was only one week into the popular and highly competitive eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series, and Hendrick Motorsports driver Chase Elliott knew he wanted a high-tech, high performance sim racing rig. Fortunately for Elliott – and many others – Hendrick fabricator Corey Williams is producing exactly that kind of next-level simulator during the current downtime in the racing world. Elliott’s rig was delivered last week just in time for the iRacing event at virtual Texas Motor Speedway, and with some solid time under his belt to get acclimated to the system now, Elliott should be in fine form for Sunday’s Food City Showdown at virtual Bristol Motor Speedway (1 p.m. ET, FOX, FS1, FOXSports App). “It’s kind of crazy to think this is where all the NASCAR guys have been sitting these past couple weeks, but it’s a tool that not a lot of people have and we’re lucky to have something like it to keep racing,’’ Elliott said of the sim equipment he received from the Williams

ENASCAR FEATURE Custom Fabricators business last week. It’s exactly the kind of positive feedback that should keep Williams – a former late model racer turned Hendrick Motorsports fabricator – busy in the near future as iRacing galvanizes the auto racing industry that would be otherwise parked during this COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Williams, 34, of Boothbay Harbor, Maine, started the business more than a decade ago, using the outlet to keep busy, make money and stay challenged after a successful career in racing, from his native Maine to eventually North Carolina – starting in go-karts and legends cars and ultimately racing super late models. However, the expense of driving soon pushed Williams to apply his mechanical skills in order to stay in racing. He was hired as a fabricator by the championship Hendrick Motorsports team in 2009 and currently works specifically on the team’s superspeedway cars – which have won the Daytona 500 pole position for five of the last six years. “I grew up racing go-karts and legends cars and ran super 0 4 8

late models, racing was the only thing I ever thought about,’’ Williams said. “You know I just loved it so much. “When my racing started slowing down, I still had to find an avenue to really get that competitiveness out of my system. So I got into iRacing and as soon as I got home with a wheel and pedals, and kind of was at my desk racing, I started seeing some issues with things moving around and pedals sliding around. “I just became quickly frustrated with that, so I’m like ‘There’s got to be a better way.’ So I went to work, brought my wheel and pedals in there and I just started kinda working away. I built a little rig and brought it home and took some pictures of it, and threw it up on the iRacing hardware forum and just began getting a lot of messages asking if I sold it, or would build it for other people. And I was like, ‘Yeah.’” One of the first major race names to seek out a Williams design was the late John Andretti, who purchased a sim for his son Jarett a decade ago. Williams remembers the interaction fondly. “That was pretty cool to sell one to him,’’ Williams recalled fondly. “I went over and set it up at his house and I have a picture on my [Facebook] page of John in the simulator trying to get his son

set up in it. That was probably the first real big name I’d say I made one for.’’ Williams’ work was wellreceived and he stayed busy, enjoying the extra opportunities until making the decision to take a break from the sim construction when he started a family. He estimates a 2009 photo of his then-infant daughter Macie in a sim he designed was one of the last he made before starting a self-induced sabbatical. But Macie, now 10, and her brother Corey Jr., nine, are older and Williams has even found ways to let them be a part of his recently reinvigorated business. Since last fall, Williams had been making new sim rigs. And now with the hold on on-track activity, the demand for them is booming – from high-profile clients to next-door neighbors. “It’s kind of funny because the last one I built was when I first started at HMS [Hendrick Motorsports] and I remember I had to go and ask permission to build it, but it was for Roush Racing,’’ Williams recalled. “I built one for them and that was the last one I’d done. I didn’t know if iRacing would continue to grow like it was. I kind of

thought it may be a quick little fad. Just recently, I realized it’s picking up speed so I was like, I need to get back in.’’ Williams estimates it takes about a day to produce one of his high-quality customized sim rigs while working at home – with Macie and Corey Jr. occasionally helping out to make sure the assembly is spot-on. “It’s pretty funny,’’ Williams said of the fast pace he’s kept. “I have a two-car garage, and my vision when I came back to this in October was I would clean everything out and put it in storage, but instead I just ordered tools. I had tools delivered in two weeks and by that time had designs in my head. As soon as the tools showed up we plugged them in and started throwing sparks. “I’m trying to keep my simulators the same, but I also want

to create a place where people can come and a la carte say, ‘I want this set-up with this wheel and pedal. I want that keyboard tray but I don’t want that shifter mount.’ So I’m just building them to what the customer requests. That’s what I’m trying to keep it at.’’ As more racing series choose the iRacing option, Williams business looks to accelerate. “It’s just crazy how this whole thing went. I got back into it and was kind of just building at night and on the weekend,’’ Williams said. “With everything shut down I really have nothing left to do right now except try to focus on this and that’s what I’ve done. “Between everyone having to be home and cooped up, it’s just exploded, and I’m looking forward to it.’’ So, too, are many others.
