UNBELIEVABLE RACING ACTION AT BRISTOL In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us his race review and analysis of last night’s race at Bristol Motor Speedway, and this week, Eric can barely believe what he saw out on the track. This is not only the first time racing at Bristol in the 2020 season, it was also our first return to short track racing period this year. The teams were using a slightly modified rules package, and Eric takes us through the details of how it affected the racing, whether 0 0 4

it continued to favor clean air over dirty air, and more. Some drivers commented afterwards about the package, and Eric takes us through what it might mean for other short track events. But of course, the finish takes top billing in Eric’s video. How did we get to this point, what are the consequences for the rest of the season, and where did Bristol wind up on the Groovy Gauge? THINGS WE LEARNED AT BRISTOL MOTOR SPEEDWAY PACKED CUP SERIES SCHEDULE CAUSES TEMPERS TO FLARE A predictably entertaining race on Sunday at Bristol Motor Speedway provided its share of excitement and controversy as Brad Keselowski seemingly came out of nowhere to capture a victory that looked to be Denny Hamlin’s, Chase Elliott’s or Joey Logano’s for the taking. In the end, Keselowski was in the right place at the right time and edged out an unlikely runner-up in Clint Bowyer. Following are five lessons learned in the Food City Presents The Supermarket Heroes 500 — the first true short-track race on the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series schedule. BY JA RED TURNER

JIMMIE JOHNSON IS INCHING CLOSER TO VICTORY LANE
A
s of Tuesday, it will be exactly three years since Jimmie Johnson last won a race — at Dover International Speedway on June 2, 2007. Johnson and Hendrick Motorsports crew chief Cliff Daniels appear to be inching ever closer to their first victory together, however, with the latest evidence of their progression being a third-place finish on Sunday at Bristol. “We’re excited,” Johnson said after posting his fourth top-10 finish in nine races this season. “I felt like when the lockdown and quarantine started, we had momentum on our side. I was really bummed that we couldn’t see that through. Then to sit on ice for eight, nine weeks, then come back and really actually be stronger than we were before the lockdown happened is really a testament to everybody at Hendrick, the leadership on Cliff’s side, what he’s doing with these crew guys. I felt like we would be good, but we definitely stepped it up after the lockdown lifted.”

RYAN BLANEY BLEW A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY
D
espite competing for one of NASCAR’s premier organizations since 2018, Team Penske driver Ryan Blaney has prevailed only twice in NASCAR Cup Series competition while teammates Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano have won eight and seven races, respectively, over that same stretch. Blaney blew another golden opportunity on Sunday at Bristol when his No. 12 Ford spun and was subsequently drilled by the car of Ty Dillon. Blaney took responsibility for the accident, which resulted in a 40th-place finish after leading 60 laps. “I hit a slick spot,” he said. “I was way high (on the track), and that’s obviously not where I wanted to be, but I didn’t think I was that high getting in there. It might have just been trying to get too much and got in the marbles and spun out. I probably shouldn’t have been pushing that hard. … I thought we found some speed up there, but just a mistake on my part.”

ne of the most startling statistics of 2020 is the fact that two-time and reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch is winless in nine starts. At the same point in the 2019 season, by comparison, Busch had been to Victory Lane a series-leading three times. But even though the veteran Joe Gibbs Racing driver — who happens to be one of the fiercest competitors in the sport — is certainly less than pleased about being winless a fourth of the way through the season, he’s seemingly not panicking. This was clear from his comments after finishing fourth on Sunday at Bristol, where he led 100 of the race’s 500 laps but was hampered by a penalty for speeding on pit road and, later, a slow pit stop. “My pit crew is normally really, really good at getting us spots, and today we just didn’t have one of those days on pit road,” Busch said. “We got the result we got.”

BRAD KESELOWSKI HAS THE GOLDEN HORSESHOE
B
y all accounts, Brad Keselowski didn’t have the fastest car in the second half of Sunday’s race at Bristol. Likewise, he didn’t have the fastest car a week earlier in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Yet, when the dust settled on both races, it was Keselowski and his No. 2 Team Penske Ford in Victory Lane. It’s no wonder that Keselowski shouted, “Let’s go to Vegas!” over his team radio after capturing his second win in three events. For whatever reason, Keselowski can’t seem to do much of anything wrong these days. That was particularly evident on Sunday in Thunder Valley, where he looked to be headed for no better than a fourth-place finish before race leader Denny Hamlin suffered a tire failure, and then Joey Logano and Chase Elliott tangled while battling for the lead — all within the final 13 laps. “We kind of got a Christmas present here in Bristol,” Keselowski said. “We’ll take it.”

JOEY LOGANO IS FURIOUS WITH CHASE ELLIOTT
J
oey Logano left Bristol very unhappy with Chase Elliott. After taking the lead from Elliott just a lap earlier, Logano lost the lead — and his shot at a victory — when Elliott’s No. 9 Chevrolet dove to his inside and washed up the track into the No. 22 Team Penske Ford, causing both cars to all but wreck and allowing Brad Keselowski, Clint Bowyer and others to pass them. Afterward, Elliott and Logano — both clad in masks to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19 — engaged in a spirited discussion on pit road. While Elliott was conciliatory during his postrace interview, accepting the blame for the contact, Logano did nothing to mask his anger. “He wrecked me,” Logano said bluntly. “He got loose underneath me. The part that’s frustrating is that afterwards a simple apology — like be a man and come up to someone and say, ‘Hey, my bad.’ But I had to force an apology, which, to me, is childish.”

JUST SAYIN’ ▶
BRISTOL NEVER FAILS TO DELIVER
From the unforgettable last-lap battles between Dale Earnhardt and Terry Labonte to Jeff Gordon’s infamous post-race shove of Matt Kenseth, Bristol Motor Speedway is nicknamed “Thunder Valley” and “The Last Great Colosseum” for a reason. It seems that no matter the year or the cast of characters, the races always tend to end in controversy. On Sunday, it happened again — thanks to Chase Elliott and Joey Logano. But, really, thank Bristol, because after all these years, there’s still not a more entertaining stop on the NASCAR Cup Series tour. JA RED TURNER ▶ A RACE WITH NO RAIN? COME AGAIN! Prior to Sunday’s race at Bristol, rain had impacted three of the four NASCAR Cup Series races run since the sport returned from its two-month hiatus necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. And, of course, rain also forced February’s Daytona 500 — NASCAR’s ultimate crown-jewel event — to be postponed by an entire day and run on a Monday evening. So, needless to say, it was a beautiful sight to see sunlight bouncing off the cars as they roared around Bristol’s highbanked .533-mile layout on Sunday. In the coming weeks and months, let’s hope the rain stays away for good. ■■ Joey Logano and Chase Elliott butted heads at Bristol Motor Speedway.

▶ BRAD KESELOWSKI IS CEMENTING HIS FUTURE While the fact remains that Brad Keselowski is in a contract year with Team Penske, here’s the bottom line: Nothing does more to shore up a driver’s future with a team than winning races. Keselowski — arguably NASCAR’s most coveted free agent — has triumphed in two of the last three events and jumped all the way to fourth in the standings after leaving the season opener at Daytona in 28th. I don’t know where Keselowski will be racing next season, and perhaps neither does he, but with every success he enjoys in 2020, it seems more likely that he will stay put for 2021.

ALFALLA RETURNS TO VICTORY LANE AT ATLANTA BY ROB TIONGSON
W
hile Denny Hamlin delivers with wins in the NASCAR Cup Series, Ray Alfalla, a four-time eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series champion, literally does this for a living as a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier. Heading into Friday evening’s eighth race of the year at the virtual Atlanta Motor Speedway, the halfway mark of the regular season, Alfalla sought for his win eNASCAR race victory in 25 events. Following a difficult 2019 campaign, Alfalla moved from the Wood Brothers Racing team to Virtual Racing School’s No. 2 Chevy Camaro ride for this year. Qualifying deep in the field in 26th, Alfalla made his march to the front with some patience but a lot of authority with a fast, virtual hot rod. Meanwhile, Kollin Keister assumed command of the race in the early going, moving up from his third starting spot to the lead as he got past pole sitter Corey Vincent. These two drivers would play a cat and mouse game until Lap 37 when Matt Bussa got into the Turn 4 wall before spinning on the frontstretch, bringing out the race’s first caution. Once the race restarted, with Jimmy Mullis leading the way, Ryan Luza, Keegan Leahy, and Brad Davies tangled in a skirmish off Turn 3 on Lap 41, quickly prompting the second yellow of the evening.

Although Leahy would recover to finish a respectable fifth, it wasn’t exactly smooth sailing for Davies and Luza as they would relegate to respectively place 30th and 34th. Mullis would lead the way on the Lap 45 restart before getting passed by Keister one lap later. Not long after on Lap 47, Graham Bowlin’s spin in Turn 3 produced the third caution of the 167-lap race. On Lap 57, the No. 1 of Steve Sheehan along with the No. 4 of Santiago Tirres, Bobby Zalenski in the No. 83, and Bowlin in the No. 18 tangled in a frontstretch fracas. Certainly, one had to wonder if it was going to be more like a short track race at this virtual 1.54-mile speedway. Finally, on the Lap 61 restart, the race would settle down for some great on-track action. As Jarl Teien led the way, Nick Ottinger made an exciting threewide pass for the third position on Lap 62. on Lap 65, would drop to third on Lap 68 with Ottinger and Alfalla bringing their Chevy Camaros to the toptwo spots. As these formidable Bowtie Brigade racers ran close together, Alfalla took the lead from Ottinger on Lap 71. Alfalla, who led the way until pitting with 52 to go, dropped to 11th on Lap 121, 4.2 seconds behind new leader Leahy. Much like Michael Jordan or Tom Brady during the final minutes of a crucial game, Alfalla crafted his way back to the front in G.O.A.T.-like fashion. Climbing up to ninth with 43 to go, Alfalla made his way up to second just 13 laps later, catching new race leader Mike Conti. Just one lap later, Alfalla made the racewinning pass, scooting by Conti for the lead. In this case, Alfalla never looked back as he snapped a 25-race winless streak, returning to Victory Lane for the first time since the 2018 championship race. “Holy cow, we’re back in in Victory Lane!” Alfalla excited proclaimed after his 25th career eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series

It’s just been the cars (and) it’s fun when you have a good car.” While Alfalla won the race, Garrett Lowe, Caine Cook, Chris Shearburn, Keegan Leahy, Kollin Keister, Casey Kirwan, Jake Nichols, Jimmy Mullis, and Nathan Lyon rounded out the top-10. Following an action-packed race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Alfalla and his comrades prepare for the All-Star Race on Tuesday, June 16, at a venue to be determined as of press time. The series makes the trek to virtual Indianapolis Motor Speedway for Round 9 of the year on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at 9 p.m. EST. NASCAR.com and iRacing’s Twitch channel will live stream the action.

Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers in the world of NASCAR. Today, he talks with Ray Alfalla, four-time eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series champion. ▶ YOU SNAPPED A 25-RACE WINLESS STREAK WITH YOUR VICTORY AT ATLANTA. AFTER ALL YOU’VE GONE THROUGH IN THE PAST YEAR-AND-A-HALF, HOW SATISFYING WAS IT FOR YOU TO RETURN TO VICTORY CIRCLE? It’s very satisfying and a much-needed result for several reasons. ▶ YOU’RE CONSIDERED ONE OF THE ALL-TIME GREATS IN ENASCAR WITH 25 VICTORIES IN YOUR 11-YEAR CAREER. WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED AND DETERMINED IN YOUR RACING JOURNEY? The competition keeps me going. The atmosphere around a Coke Series race is one-of-a-kind. It’s all still growing, so I want to be part of the journey for a long time to come. ▶ THIS YEAR’S GIVEN ENASCAR QUITE THE BOOST TO NEW AUDIENCES. WHAT’S IT MEAN TO SEE IRACING RECEIVE THIS EXPOSURE, PARTICULARLY WITH YOUR SERIES AND THE PRO INVITATIONAL SERIES? I’ve been here since the beginning, so to see the series grow as much as it has is great to see. There are lots of talented individuals in and around the series, and it’s awesome to see all of us in the spotlight. ▶ WHICH DRIVERS WOULD YOU CONSIDER YOUR FRIENDS? I get along with most of the drivers in the series, but my teammates on Slip Angle Motorsports are ones I’m closest with. They are Santiago Tirres, Eric Smith, Brandon Kettelle, Chris Overland and Jake Nichols. Great group of guys! ▶ IF IRACING THREW A “RAY ALFALLA DAY” FOR YOU AND YOUR FANS, WHICH MUSICIANS WOULD YOU INVITE FOR A CONCERT PERFORMANCE? WOULD WE SEE YOU ON STAGE WITH THESE MUSICIANS OR BANDS? Probably some really mainstream pop singer (looking at you, Camila Cabello). If there’s alcohol involved, I’ll be on stage and maybe even crowd surfing!

ONE OF THE WONDERFUL THINGS ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA IS THAT IT ALLOWS FOR healthy, productive conversations from anyone, be it any of us or someone with celebrity like Ty Dillon. No matter where anyone presides with this still pressing matter, the bare minimum is talking this over and hopefully building bridges versus tearing them down. It’s incredibly moving and encouraging for Dillon to make an authentic post about an issue that, no matter what, impacts everyone in making a change.

▶ There’s an adage that goes, “Sometimes, it’s better to be lucky than good.” However, Brad Keselowski has been lucky and good in two of the past three races. It seems like Keselowski and crew chief Jeremy Bullins have been gelling about as good as Dr. Scholl’s shoe inserts being compared to Ferdinand Magellan. That said, it was quite the opportunistic victory for Brad Keselowski following the bruhaha between teammate Joey Logano and Chase Elliott on the penultimate lap at Bristol. 0 2 8
ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: JUNE 1, 2020
▶ While Brad Keselowski emerged Bristol with a smile underneath his mask, it was evident how displeased Joey Logano was with Chase Elliott even with masks covering both racers’ faces. Naturally, the fan consensus with Logano was more of a “boo hoo” and “tough luck” attitude than a sympathetic perspective. That said, if one played devil’s advocate, it was a really tough break for Logano when he appeared to make the race winning move with two to go. On to Atlanta.

not just great racing, and Rusty takes us through why these moments are so important to NASCAR fans. The low horsepower, high downforce rules package that NASCAR has been using (and modifying) lately contributed heavily to action, and Rusty walks us through it all.
