Bristol Shows Off the Power of the Short Track
I
n this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us his recap of the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. But first, he has some real talk for us fans in the stands and the peanut gallery. With so much constant fan debate over the format of stage racing, rules for horsepower and aerodynamic packages, and even the exact number of races per season, it seems there’s always one lodestone for NASCAR fans that they can always rely on - We Want More Short Tracks! More at Bristol! More Martinsville! Bring back Rockingham!

And yet, as with this week, as soon as we fans get a whiff of a little bad news, a little cross talk in terms of attendance, suddenly we’re asking to get rid of Bristol? Was another Kyle Busch just too much to handle? Was that cold blooded dumping by Chase Elliot the straw that breaks the camel’s back, or Matt Tifft’s, as it were? Or maybe we just need a nice splash of cold water from Eric Estepp. Take a listen to his diagnosis, and stick around for an absolutely unprecedented Groovy Gauge. Where did Bristol end up? You’ll have to watch and find out!

Kyle holds off brother Kurt in 1-2 finish
K
yle Busch rallied from an early-race accident and then held off older brother Kurt Busch in the final laps to become the first three-time winner of the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season. Before the series heads to Richmond Raceway this weekend for another short-track showdown, here are five lessons learned in Sunday’s Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway: By Jared Turner

Bristol Is For Busch Brothers
B
rothers Kyle and Kurt Busch entered Sunday’s Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway as the prohibitive favorites to go to Victory Lane. It’s fair to say they didn’t disappoint. In addition to stretching their combined Bristol winning streak to four races, the brothers finished 1-2, with Kyle prevailing over his older sibling by .722 seconds at the checkered flag. Kyle won for the eighth time in Thunder Valley and for the third time in his last four starts here. Kurt, a six-time Bristol winner, just missed out on going back-to-back after triumphing here last fall. So, what is it about Bristol that just suits the Busch brothers? While they undoubtedly aren’t ready give away their secret, this much is certain: Sunday’s 1-2 was a rare achievement, it being only the second time that the brothers have swept the top two finishing positions in a NASCAR premier series race.

This Bristol Race Was Very Bristol-Like
R
aces at Bristol are traditionally on the more unpredictable side, and Sunday was no exception. Numerous multi-car wrecks, a total of 21 lead changes and a chaotic final few laps influenced in large part by differing pit strategies made for arguably the wildest race of the season so far. On top of all that, the first stage featured a surprising winner in the form of Germain Racing’s Ty Dillon, who earned his first stage victory as a Monster Energy Series driver. Even before that happened, Chase Elliott was caught up in a three-car wreck while leading the race, and eventual race winner Kyle Busch was drilled from behind by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and went for a spin on the second lap. Then, under a caution much later on, race leaders Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski inexplicably elected to pit — a decision that ultimately cost the teammates a shot at victory.

Clint Bowyer Has The Blues
C
lint Bowyer’s challenging season continued on Sunday where a late collision with driver Joey Logano sent him into the wall and ultimately out of contention for the victory. After finishing seventh, Bowyer didn’t even attempt to hide his frustration with his circumstances and Logano. “We had a good car. It’s just horribly disappointing,” said Bowyer, whose Stewart-Haas Racing Ford led 24 laps. “He was racing me pretty hard. I could get under him. I saw that I could get under him, and he would diamond it and just didn’t leave me much room there. It’s time to race; there’s no question about it. We just barely touched, and it must have cut the valve stem out of it or something, and hit it just right. Maybe his fender caught it or something; I don’t know. That’s about typical luck for here. You’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t.”

There’s No Slowing Down JGR And Team Penske
S
unday’s race at Bristol was the eighth event of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season. And for the eighth time in 2019, a Joe Gibbs Racing or Team Penske car went to Victory Lane. Sunday’s performance might have been the most indicative yet of how much distance the two organizations have put between themselves and the rest of the field. Just consider, for example: Of the nine drivers who led Sunday’s race, six were from JGR or Team Penske. That means three of JGR’s four drivers led at some point on Sunday, while all three Team Penske drivers did the same. Collectively, JGR and Team Penske drivers were out front for all but 68 of the 500 laps around Bristol’s high-banked, high-speed .533-mile layout. Said Stewart-Haas Racing driver Clint Bowyer after the latest dominant performance by JGR and Team Penske: “We’ve got work to do. We know that.”

Kurt Busch Was Willing To Wreck His Brother To Win
D
espite his greatest efforts, Kurt Busch was unable to chase down younger brother Kyle Busch in the final laps of Sunday’s race at Bristol. For Kyle’s sake — and perhaps for Kurt’s future sake — that was probably a good thing. “I was going to wreck him,” Kurt admitted. “I was wanting to stay close enough so that when we took the white, I was just going to drive straight into (turns) 3 and 4; I mean he’s already won (in 2019). I figured he could give a little love to his brother, but no. I wanted that one bad.” Informed of Kurt’s intentions, Kyle responded with a playful jab. “I told him you can’t tell people you’re going to wreck them before you do it, because when the roles are reversed, that person is going to wreck you because you already told them that you were going to wreck them,” Kyle said.

Darrell Waltrip will retire from FOX’s broadcast team this season.
Darrell Waltrip Will Be Missed In The FOX Booth By Jared Turner
N
ext season’s FOX NASCAR broadcast booth will look noticeably different in the absence of legendary driverturned-announcer Darrell Waltrip, who revealed this past week that he will retire from the network’s on-air team after the FOX portion of the 2019 NASCAR season commences at Sonoma Raceway on June 23. Waltrip, known to most as simply “DW,” is a 2012 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee whose 19 years in the broadcast booth bookended a wildly successful driving career highlighted by three NASCAR premier series championships and 84 career victories, including the 1989 Daytona 500. Coincidentally, or perhaps not, the announcement of Waltrip’s decision to retire from FOX came just days after a prominent NASCAR journalist penned a column suggesting the time had come for Waltrip to hand over his microphone to someone

more in touch with today’s generation of NASCAR drivers and fans. While the thesis of the column perhaps has some merit (Waltrip is 72 years old and hasn’t driven a NASCAR stock car since the 2000 season), ole DW is a special breed. While his inrace commentary might not be as crisp or relevant as it was, say, 15 years ago, he has still forgotten more about NASCAR than most people ever knew. His colorful wit and candor along with his vast understanding of the sport and how it got to where it is today remain a tremendous addition to each and every NASCAR broadcast (Can I get a “boogity, boogity, boogity,” someone?). So rather than chastising Waltrip as washedup and over the hill, it would be a good idea for us all to soak up as much DW as we possibly can over these next couple of months. After all, it’s oftentimes hard to fully appreciate someone until they’re gone. So it will be with Waltrip — whose one-of-a-kind voice will be missed, eventually even by his detractors, when it’s no longer heard.

How to Continue Progressing in NASCAR on iRacing Your Training Moves through the Rookie Series By M atteo M archeschi
T
wo weeks ago, I wrote an article about how to get started in iRacing, including what equipment to buy. Now that you know that, let’s get racing! You’ll start your career in rookie class, just like every iRacer does. iRacing has four disciplines to choose from: Oval, Road, Dirt Oval, and Dirt Road. For this guide, we’ll be focusing on oval. As a rookie, you’ll have two series to choose from: Street Stocks and

Legend Cars. Every iRacing series changes tracks week-to-week. In the street stock series, you’ll alternate between USA Speedway, a 0.75 mile oval in Florida, and the iconic 1.5 mile Charlotte Motor Speedway. In the legend car series, you’ll cycle through a set of six short ovals, all of which come with the service. The main focus while you’re in rookie class should be car control and wreck avoidance. Because of iRacing’s safety rating system, you’ll

That means wrecks will be plentiful, and avoiding them is key, because the less contact you have with other driver and the wall, the more your safety rating will rise, and the quicker you’ll ascend to D class. Looking ahead and learning how to tell when a wreck is developing is key to staying out of trouble. The other piece of this is car control. Learning the limits of your car is extremely important to avoid getting yourself into trouble while still making as much speed as possible. The video

above, the first in a three-part series made by Scott Hanely, goes into more detail about this. While everyone’s experience in rookie class is different, especially depending on the series you run, it’s easy to get frustrated. Whether it’s your own mistake or somebody else’s, it’s easy to want to give up. However, practice will get you through. Every race you run will have something to learn, and watching the replay you’re provided with after the race can help you learn from your mistakes and improve. That improvement feels incredibly gratifying when you finally get up to D class. Until then, happy iRacing!

msg: making racing safer TM
By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One health issue that affects NASCAR racecar drivers and fans alike is neck and back pain. Cormier shared some preventative measures one can take to help avoid lower back pain. “Outside of the red flags – like a fever, weight loss that is not explained by a change in diet, suspicion of cancers, long-term steroid use, or a weak immune system – we can look at simple things to prevent lower back pain,” Cormier said. “We’ll take a look at improving the diet, weight loss, smoking habits and exercise.”
0 2 6
Bristol Rearview: April 8, 2019
A patient can also strengthen his or her core to help prevent lower back pain. Improving one’s range of motion and maintaining an active lifestyle are also helpful preventative measures. In the event that a patient is already affected by lower back pain, Cormier recommends he or she take an anti-inflammatory, such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol – if the patient has been cleared by a doctor. Avoiding carrying large bags, briefcases and purses can also limit the stress on a person’s back.
health and wellness “Watch your posture,” Cormier said. “Make sure you’re not overloading your back. Consider switching to a briefcase or bag on wheels.” One of the most common causes of upper back and neck pain in this day and age is poor posture when sending text messages and looking down at smart phones. Writing for extended periods of time without stretching your neck is another common cause. “It’s the result of constantly looking down at a computer or phone,” Cormier said. “It’s important to think about posture.” Neck trauma is a more serious issue that can be managed non-surgically with traction
therapy, physical therapy or an interventional procedure, depending on the results of one’s MRI. Racecar drivers also are at risk of suffering compression fractures. Austin Therriault and Aric Almirola have both suffered those types of injuries in the recent past. “When you’re driving at high speeds, the spine absorbs the ‘G’ forces of the wreck, which predisposes one to the possibility of spinal fractures,” Cormier said. “Protect your body by consistently exercising for a few minutes three to four times weekly, and maintain a healthy life style, and your body will be significantly optimized to endure the physical challenges ahead.”
Introducing Brain Armor new product that excites Cormier in terms of improving brain function is the Brain Armor nutritional supplement. The product is the work of Dr. Julian Bailes, a recognized leader in the field of neurosurgery and the impact of brain injury on brain function. The supplement includes Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which help the human brain possess the ability to grow new nerve cells, or neurons. Cormier said that patients tested after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty

Acids were less likely to incur brain-related injuries. Also, patients that suffered brain-related injuries were more likely to recover after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty Acids. “That component of the nervous system is huge,” Cormier said. “We found that people who are rich

in DHA and EPA levels are more protected with regard to brain function. That drew me in. If we pursue that in racecar drivers, we can protect them with a supplement like Brain Armor that includes fish oil and Omega-3 Fatty Acids.” Fish oils are also available for purchase over the counter. Cormier said the only downside of ingesting fish oil is that of its blood thinning properties. “Other than that, we haven’t seen any downside,” Cormier said. Find out more at brain-armor.com.

NASCAR PETS
Drivers and their furry friends By Jared Turner
J
ohn Hunter Nemechek’s house could be likened to an animal farm these days. A pet lover from childhood, the now 21-year-old NASCAR Xfinity Series driver is the owner and caretaker of three rambunctious but friendly dogs: a 3-year-old Goldendoodle named Layla, a 3-year-old Charcoal Lab named Tucker and a 1-year-old Black Lab named Nyx. With his trio of furry friends to care for, Nemechek is never concerned about boredom. “Everyone jokes around and sends me pictures with a bunch of puppies running into a house and stuff like that,” he said. “I feel like that’s

what I have right now with these three. They’re definitely a handful, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” While Nemechek is still relatively new to life with three dogs, his passion for pets is nothing new. “I’ve always had a love for animals,” said the son of longtime NASCAR Cup Series driver Joe Nemechek. “We used to own a horse farm. So I was around horses, but my passion has always been for dogs. They’re a man’s best friend. Being able to walk in the door to them, hang out with them and hug them and play with them, it’s a lot of fun.”

SURECAN ▶▶ The award-winning SureCan was designed with all of your gas-powered machines in mind. With patented technology, the SureCan offers its user the best experience they have ever had with a fuel can. The flexible spout rotates down more than 180 degrees and fits perfectly into any machine’s fill location, while the thumb-release trigger on top controls the flow. By pulling straight back on the safety trigger and then down on the thumb button, fuel is released immediately while you stay in complete control. When you notice your tank is almost full, slowly release the thumb button and allow the excess fuel to drain from the top of the spout before rotating it back up. No more bending over, tipping your fuel can forward and holding it in an awkward position. The SureCan is a high-quality fuel dispensing machine. Learn more at surecanusa.com. 0 5 4

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com
