A Salute to Coca-Cola 600 Paint Schemes There’s a lot of great racing to look forward to this weekend, with the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indy 500, and the Coke 600 all happening in the next few days. The Coke 600 has a special place in the hearts of NASCAR fans, not only because the 600 mile endurance race touches the fundamental core of stock car racing, but it’s also Memorial Day weekend! And that means Patriotic Paint Schemes for the race cars. This week, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through a classic Reaction episode of Out of the Groove, where he reviews the patriotic and Memorial Day-themed paint schemes that drivers will be rocking on their cars for the event. 0 0 4

Charlotte PReview: May 23, 2019

This year’s Coke 600 will also feature a moment of silence to honor veterans and service members, and several drivers have gone with a more military themed livery set, notably with several cars rocking a camouflage paint scheme. More the usual, though, we get to see a number of different Stars & Stripes-themed schemes as well. But that’s not all in this episode. Eric also covers the opening of the eNASCAR Heat Pro League this weekend in Charlotte, the first main event of NASCAR’s esports program on NASCAR Heat 3. And also, don’t miss out on your chance to win a 1:24 diecast. Check it out!

resh off of one of the more exciting and drama-filled All-Star Races in recent memory, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series is back at it for a second consecutive weekend of racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The Distance Factor

N

o matter how you slice it, 600 miles and 400 laps at Charlotte Motor Speedway constitute a long race that puts both man and machine to the test. While it’s important to have a fast car, it’s more important to have a car — and, especially, an engine — that actually lasts 600 miles. Likewise, drivers in superb physical condition are more likely to find success than those whose endurance might not be as great. Hydration both before and during the race is also key, given that the 600 isn’t only the longest race of the season; it’s also traditionally one of the hottest. And, of course, drivers and crew members who stay mentally focused for such a long race tend to perform better than those more prone to zone in and out. The bottom line? A good night in the Coca-Cola 600 requires a host of intangibles that go beyond raw talent and speed.

Changing Track Conditions

B

ecause the Coca-Cola 600 begins in the heat of the day and ends under notably cooler nighttime temperatures, it’s crucial to have a car with some adjustability built into it. All too often in the 600, drivers will march straight to the front in the early going, only to fade significantly once the sun goes down. Conversely, drivers are prone to start off a bit slow but pick up steam and become contenders as sunshine gives way to darkness. Ideally, a driver wants to be fast from start to finish, and the best way to accomplish that is having a car that responds well to adjustments throughout the race. “The track typically goes through a lot of changes over the course of the night,” veteran Ryan Newman said. “Keeping yourself in the game is really what it is all about. It’s really similar to how you race the Daytona 500.”

Ryan Newman vs. Clint Bowyer Part II

W

hile the on-track action during last weekend’s All-Star Race certainly offered a lot to love, the most intense fireworks occurred just after the race when Clint Bowyer ran up to Ryan Newman’s parked car and began lunging at Newman through the window. Newman promptly emerged from the vehicle and the two drivers engaged in a heated, profanity-laced, finger-pointing exchange as NASCAR officials and PR representatives intervened in an effort to preempt a potential full-fledged fisticuffs. The two drivers — whom NASCAR chose not to fine for their actions — later castigated each other during post-race interviews. “Where I come from, you get punched in the nose for that, and that’s what he got,” Bowyer said, referring to a late-race bump from Newman. Meanwhile, Newman mocked Bowyer for keeping his helmet on when he approached his car. “I think he should be embarrassed for himself,” Newman said. Will the two spar again this weekend? Stay tuned.

More Joe Gibbs Racing Dominance

T

rying to figure out which organization has the upper hand going into NASCAR’s longest and arguably most grueling race? The answer couldn’t be any more obvious. Exactly one third of the way through the season, Joe Gibbs Racing has collected seven of the 12 trophies handed out. Current or former JGR drivers have also won three of the last four Coca-Cola 600s, with the organization’s most recent victory in the 600 coming last season courtesy of Kyle Busch, who led 377 of 400 laps and won all four stages. This season’s success combined with JGR’s recent history of success in the 600 certainly bode well for JGR on Sunday, when two JGR drivers — Busch and Martin Truex Jr. — will be seeking their second victory in NASCAR’s longest race, respectively, while teammates Denny Hamlin and Erik Jones will be looking to win the marathon-style event for the first time.

Alex Bowman’s Big Breakthrough

B

y virtue of finishing runner-up in each of the past three races, Alex Bowman became the first driver in Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series history to record three second-place finishes before claiming his maiden win. Thirteen others in the series’ modern era have posted three consecutive second-place finishes, the most recent being Kyle Larson in 2017. As for Bowman, he has led laps in each of the past three outings, with his biggest laps-led total of 63 coming at Kansas Speedway in the most recent points race. Perhaps the Coca-Cola 600 will be Bowman’s race to finally be a bridesmaid no more. If that happens, Bowman certainly wouldn’t be the first driver to make NASCAR’s longest race the venue for his first career victory. Most memorably, Jeff Gordon accomplished that feat in 1994, and Matt Kenseth did the same in 2000. Both went on to become champions of NASCAR’s premier division.

drivers to watch at charlotte

By Jared Turner ▶▶ Kyle Busch. Kyle Busch torched the field in last year’s 600mile event at Charlotte, leading 377 of 400 laps and winning all four stages. Given how fast Busch has been almost everywhere this season, expect the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to be up front and in contention for the win virtually all night. ▶▶ Alex Bowman. Three races, three consecutive secondplace finishes for Alex Bowman. The driver of the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy rides into NASCAR’s longest race red-hot and seemingly right on the cusp of a breakthrough first career victory in NASCAR’s premier division. ▶▶ Martin Truex Jr. A winner of two of the last four points races, Martin Truex Jr. comes to Charlotte carrying a lot of momentum. Truex has also won two of the last five races on the Charlotte quad-oval, the first of those victories coming in historymaking fashion at the 2016 Coke 600. ▶▶ Brad Keselowski. Brad Keselowski has been a force to be reckoned with this season, scoring three wins in 12 points races — including the most recent points race, held at Kansas Speedway on May 11. The Team Penske driver has never won the 600 but recorded a lone Charlotte victory in fall 2013. ▶▶ Kyle Larson. After a miserable start to 2019, Kyle Larson exorcised his early-season demons with a head-turning victory in last weekend’s All-Star Race at Charlotte. Now, the Chip Ganassi Racing driver is poised to make a run at the rare All-Star/Coke 600 sweep.

The Greatest of Cinderella Finishes Mears Wins at Charlotte with a Cup of Fuel By Ben white

O

n May 27, 2007, Casey Mears, driver of the No. 25 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, collected his lone-career Cup series victory in NASCAR’s longest race held at the 1.5-mile Charlotte Motor Speedway. Starting 16th in the 43-car field, the California native ran in the top-10 throughout the 400-lap event. Drivers Kurt Busch, Brian Vickers and Mears’ teammate Jimmie Johnson led 260 circuits and were poised for a fight for the win. With 60 laps remaining, many of the race’s top drivers began conserving fuel. Out of options, Tony Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr. eventually pitted for fuel, handing the lead to Denny Hamlin.

0 2 0

Charlotte PReview: May 23, 2019

With six laps remaining, Hamlin was forced to pit road, setting Mears up for the surprise victory. Mears prayed his fuel would last long enough to cross under the checkered flag. Before he could get to the first turn on his cool down lap, his engine fell silent with a dry fuel tank. It was his first victory in 156 Cup series starts. “We were a third- or fourthplace car at the time. The only way we could win was to gamble, and that’s what we did,” Mears said in post-race interviews. “It’s unbelievable. I can’t believe we’re in victory lane. It’s huge to happen right here at home. What a great call our crew chief (Darian Grubb) made to keep us out!”

wenty-six-year-old Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver Kyle Larson has been around racing his entire life. “My parents (Mike and Janet Larson) were really big race fans growing up and would go to Sprint Car races at West Capital Speedway and other tracks in California. They got the racing bug when they were teenagers,” Larson explained. “When they had me, they took me to my first race when I was a week old. “My dad built me a little go-kart when I was 4 years old to play around in. Then I got into competitive racing when I was about 7 years old.” A native of Elk Grove, California, Larson skyrocketed through the open-wheel, dirt-track ranks and eventually made headlines in USAC’s top three divisions. He began transitioning to stock car racing in 2012 as part of the Earnhardt Ganassi Racing driver-development program and

Hall of Fame spotlight

Tony Stewart leads a NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of 2020 By Reid Spencer

T

hree-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Tony Stewart will join the NASCAR Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2020, arguably the most interconnected group of five inductees yet to be voted into the sport’s most prestigious fraternity, as announced Wednesday at the Hall of Fame. Joining Stewart are car owner Joe Gibbs, for who Stewart won two of his three Cup titles; fellow series driver Bobby Labonte, who won his 2000 championship with Gibbs; crew chief and engine builder Waddell Wilson, who worked with Stewart at Ranier Racing during a limited run in the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 1996; and hard-charging Buddy Baker, who got his first look at Stewart when the 49-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series winner was testing his mettle at the Buck

0 2 4

Charlotte PReview: May 23, 2019

Baker Driving School. The relationships between this class and others already in the Hall also are inexorably intertwined. Baker’s father, the aforementioned Buck Baker was inducted as a member of the Class of 2013. Labonte joins his brother, Terry Labonte, a member of the Class of 2016. In 1972, Wilson built the engines for the Wood Brothers—NASCAR Hall of Famers Glen and Leonard—including the power plant that propelled A.J. Foyt to his Daytona 500 victory. Edsel Ford II, who on Wednesday was named the recipient of the Landmark Award for Outstanding Contributions to NASCAR, has enjoyed a relationship with the Wood Brothers that spans generations. Edsel Ford is a member of the board of directors of Ford Motor Company.

The Wood Brothers have fielded Ford products exclusively during their long tenure in the sport. Following Gordon from the open-wheel ranks, Stewart won his first Cup championship with Gibbs in 2002, added another in 2005 and claimed his final title as an owner/driver in 2011 after joining with Gene Haas to form Stewart-Haas Racing. Stewart led the Hall of Fame voting, which was conducted in a closed session on Wednesday at the Charlotte Convention Center. He was named on 88% of the 57 ballots cast, followed by Gibbs (72%), Wilson (72%), Baker (70%) and Labonte (67%). A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a three-time Super Bowl-winning coach of the Washington Redskins, Gibbs has four championships to his credit in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series—two with Stewart and one each with Labonte and Kyle Busch (2015). Gibbs’ 164 Cup wins as an owner ranks third alltime and includes three Daytona 500 victories and five Brickyard 400 triumphs. A champion in both the Monster Energy and Xfinity Series Labonte was selected in his third year on the NASCAR Hall of Fame ballot. In 729 career Cup starts, he accumulated 21 victories to go with 26 poles. He and Terry Labonte were the first brothers each to win a Cup title, later to be joined by Kurt and Kyle Busch. Known as the Gentle Giant, Baker always showed up in the important races. In 1980, driving the legendary Gray Ghost (the No. 28 Oldsmobile owned by Ranier), he won the Daytona 500 with an average speed of 177.602 mph, a track record that still stands.

Baker won the big races on the big tracks. Of his 19 career victories, four came at Talladega, four at Charlotte and two each at Daytona and Darlington. After retiring from racing in 1992, Baker embarked on a second career as a broadcaster on both television and radio, earning a large following with his and storytelling. Wilson built engines for the stars of the sport, powering David Pearson (1968-1969) and Benny Parsons (1973) to Cup series championships. Cars with his engines under the hood won 109 times and earned 123 pole positions. As a crew chief, Wilson won 22 races, including the 1980 Daytona 500 with Baker. He also triumphed in the Great American race with NASCAR Hall of Famer Cale Yarborough in 1983 and 1984. It was his engine in Benny Parsons’ car when Parsons became the first driver to top the 200 mph mark with a lap at 200.176 mph in Talladega qualifying in 1982. Landmark Award winner Edsel Ford’s tenure at Ford Motor Company includes a stint as president and chief operating officer from 1991 to 1998. He was also a director of International Speedway Corporation from 2007 through 2015.

Joe Gibbs’ 164 Cup wins as an owner ranks third all-time.

That led to forming a American Lemans Series team in 2005 where Albert mastered the electrical intricacies on those smaller road course machines. Further work on Grand Am cars helped him to become even more proficient in electrical engineering. The often long periods of time away from home prompted a look toward NASCAR, a sport much different than what he saw at North Wilkesboro, N.C., 33 years earlier. “I started in NASCAR in 2015 and worked at Joe Gibbs Racing for four years before coming

here (to JGT Daugherty) this year,” Albert said. “I started out doing some computer IT work for JGR and a little bit of engineering support in the Cup side before moving over as a race engineer on the Xfinity side.” Albert found that NASCAR was using the same types of computer technology he became accustomed to while working in sports car racing. His most trusted tool is his computer. “A race engineer deals with car set-up and documentation and working on car attitude,” Albert said. “I do more with the driver development than I do set up of the car. I work with him on his (driving) lines, throttle traces, brakes and things like that. I worked with Ryan while at JGR so that’s a bonus.”

Spotlight driver. My old man told me that very few people make a living out of it, but he pushed me to make it happen. I ended up going to school and working for a car manufacturer. Once I was out of school, I joined the pro series, but I was a late-comer. ▶▶ I guess I made the right choice going to school and getting a safe career. Right now, I can enjoy both of them. Would I want to do more racing? Yes, but it’s a challenge getting more seat time and sponsor money. Money is always the key. By having Mahindra ROXOR supporting me, it draws a line to help me fulfill my dream. ▶▶ What do you do for your other job? My dad worked at a car dealership all his life; and I studied at the Canadian Automotive Marketing Business School. I went to a program in Ontario and studied business management and automotive marketing. I spent 16 years with Toyota Canada. I’m no longer with them, but I’m with a company – OEM – that manufactures parts. We’re dealing with John Deere, Caterpillar – those types of businesses. This time of year, it’s difficult to juggle a professional career and professional racing. ▶▶ How did the partnership with Mahindra ROXOR come about? For me to be a representative for the company, I need to believe in it. It’s good to get money, but if I don’t believe in the product, I’ll say no to sponsors. It’s a hard thing to do, but if it’s not reaching your personal conviction, you should not be representing those people. ROXOR is the type of product I like – a multi-functional vehicle that can go off-road. 0 3 8

ROXOR’s Customer Service ocelyn Fecteau is quick to note ROXOR provides the highest level of customer service of any of his former sponsors. “Everywhere I go across North America, I see ROXOR there,” Fecteau said. “It could be an agriculture show, and I’ll go to their booth and see what people are saying. That gives me an ability to better represent the product in the market.” Fecteau rarely hears a complaint about the product. “I haven’t really heard anything negative,” he said. Fecteau has been impressed by ROXOR’s open line of communication with him since the company became his sponsor. “It’s a big company, but they’re very efficient,” Fecteau said. “They give good service. I call them, and they call right back.”

hile Kaz Grala admits that it isn’t easy to be a part-time racecar driver, he is thrilled to be with Richard Childress Racing. Not only is it the start of what can be something bigger, but he believes it’s the move he needed in order to keep his name out there.

▶▶ What’s it been like to drive the No. 21 car? “It’s been a very different year for me. I have very few chances on track, which is a blessing and a curse, being in a great car with a top team. There’s so much to learn and prepare for in such little time. I’ve been working away from the track to find sponsorship to race more next year, to ideally run a full season.” ▶▶ How difficult is it for you to run part-time? “The obvious of course is that everybody else is warmed up and I’m coming in cold. Last year, when I ran my part-time schedule, we were lone wolves. To me, I feel like a brand-new XFINITY rookie with RCR. As far as I’m concerned, I have three races of experience rather than 25. You look at Tyler Reddick, who was a rookie last year and so was I, but he was three times as many starts as I do and with top teams.”

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

otorsports Safety Group is a collaboration of innovators in the sport who are determined to improve the safety of racing. MSG shares tips for race car drivers to help avoid injuries during races and practice sessions. Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. For Dr. Cormier’s most recent side project, he co-authored an autobiography – with the help of acclaimed author Clifton Lambreth. The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things. “I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. People were pushing me to share my life experiences because there are many others currently suffering through some of the same things. My hope is that people might draw from

0 4 2

Charlotte PReview: May 23, 2019

this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.” Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal

health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about

his past unearthed some feelings that he’d compartmentalized for years. “You don’t really know how your parents’ divorce resonates deep inside you,” Cormier said. “In self-reflection, I don’t think I ever dealt with that correctly. I recall a lot of yelling and screaming in front of us, in addition to physical abuse. That became somewhat of the norm. I kept it hidden and tucked away. I have come to realize that this really wasn’t my fault. Hopefully this helps with issues that others currently deal with – like relationships and friendships. This is what I’ve come through. Things could always be so much worse.”

The Man Behind the Book Dr. Jason Cormier teaches both medical students and residents many innovative neurosurgical techniques including endoscopic pituitary and image-guided surgery, and minimally invasive complex spinal surgery. Dr. Cormier was named as one of “America’s Top Surgeons,” in the field of Neurosurgery, by the Consumers Research Council of America, Guide to America’s top surgeons and currently listed as one of the leading physicians in the world for Neurosurgery. Dr. Cormier is a member of the American Association of

Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. His busy practice involves performing complex brain and spinal operations on patients from around the country that seek out his surgical acumen.

NASCAR PETS

Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Jared Turner

L

ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want

0 4 8

Charlotte PReview: May 23, 2019

to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”
