ARE ALL THE HENDRICK CHEVY’S CURSED? In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp is back with another race review and analysis, this time for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The patriotic paint schemes were out in full force in honor of the US Armed Forces, and Eric is here to talk us through all the on-track action. The race went deep into the night, after experiencing a little over an hour delay due to rain over the track. However, once the racing got back 0 0 4

under green, some problems with the racing started to become apparent. Very few passes were made, with only a few passes made for the lead. Eric talks us through the differences between this year’s race and the spectacular action we saw in 2019. But that’s not all. Eric also talks us through the seeming curse on Chase Elliot, and he puts the whole show up on his patented Groovy Gauge. Find out where this year’s race ranks on this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

THINGS WE LEARNED AT CHARLOTTE NASCAR’S MARATHON ENTERTAINS Despite being run without fans in the grandstands and delayed for more than an hour by rain, Sunday night’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway proved to be an entertaining affair from start to finish. As a matter of fact, the race took arguably its most bizarre turn before it even began (read more about this on the next page). Check out the following five lessons learned from Sunday night’s event — which is the longest race and one of the most grueling races on the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series schedule. BY JA RED TURNER

DENNY HAMLIN’S TEAM DID A BIG NO-NO

F

resh off a win on Wednesday night, Denny Hamlin had every reason for optimism entering Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600. However, his chances of winning NASCAR’s only 600-miler went out the window quite literally before the green flag even waved. The source of Hamlin’s troubles was a ballast that inexplicably came flying off of his No. 11 Toyota and onto the track before the first lap of green-flag racing. Hamlin immediately came to pit road, where he lost eight laps while his car underwent a repair. The worst part for Hamlin and his team might not be the poor finish, however; it could be the fact that according to the NASCAR rulebook, any driver whose car loses a ballast during a race will lose his crew chief, car chief and head engineer to matching four-race suspensions. While no official penalty has been issued to Hamlin’s team for the ballast issue, the aforementioned penalty would seem to be little more than a formality at this point.

DESPITE FLUNKING POST-RACE INSPECTION, JIMMIE JOHNSON IS GETTING HIS MOJO BACK

I

f this is, in fact, Jimmie Johnson’s final year as a full-time driver in NASCAR’s top series (he recently left the door open to possibly returning in 2021, but such a change of heart seems unlikely), he’s certainly off to a good start. Johnson’s best all-around performance yet of 2020 came on Sunday night when his No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet led six laps on the way to a second-place finish. Johnson and his team were handed bad news after the race, however, when Johnson’s car was disqualified for flunking post-race inspection. As a result, Johnson was stripped of his second-place finish and earned no points for his efforts. “We think something must’ve broken but won’t know until we get it back to the shop tomorrow and can diagnose,” crew chief Cliff Daniels tweeted after NASCAR DQ’d the seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion. “Tough news after a strong night. This team is getting stronger. We are focused forward.”

CLINT BOWYER’S WOEFUL 2020 CONTINUES

fter prevailing twice in 2018, Clint Bowyer was widely expected to continue his winning ways in 2019. But it didn’t happen. Instead of building on the success of the prior season, Bowyer was shut out of Victory Lane in Year Three with Stewart-Haas Racing — leading many to speculate about his future with the Tony Stewart co-owned organization. Yet Bowyer managed to secure a contract extension — albeit only a oneyear one — for the 2020 season. Based on how Bowyer’s season has gone so far, however, don’t be surprised if he soon finds himself on the hot seat again. With a tire failure that sent his No. 14 Ford hard into the Turn 1 wall about a fourth of the way through Sunday night’s race, Bowyer has now finished outside of the top 10 in five of the season’s seven races to date. Sunday night’s outcome seemed particularly hard for Bowyer to accept. “It pretty well sucks,” he said.

CHASE ELLIOTT’S FRUSTRATIONS ARE MOUNTING

n Wednesday night, Chase Elliott was in the hunt for the win at Darlington when Kyle Busch sent Elliott’s car into a spin. On Sunday night at Charlotte, Elliott appeared to be in an even better position to nab his first triumph of 2020 when a caution flag waved with two laps to go for the spinning car of William Byron — Elliott’s teammate, of all people. Elliott, who had a comfortable lead before the caution flag flew, was ordered by crew chief Alan Gustafson to come down pit road for tires despite concerns that he may not have time to get back to the front in just two green flag laps. Sure enough, Elliott did run out of time, finishing third after eight drivers elected not to pit under the final caution period. “Those guys are going to do the opposite of whatever we do,” Elliott said after the race. “So that’s just part of it. You make decisions and live with them.”

GAMBLING PAID OFF FOR BRAD KESELOWSKI AND CREW CHIEF JEREMY BULLINS

B

rad Keselowski probably didn’t have the best car on Sunday night at Charlotte. However, when it came to the winning strategy, Keselowski and his No. 2 Team Penske team led by crew chief Jeremy Bullins couldn’t have played their cards more perfectly. Seemingly destined for a second-place finish after being passed by Chase Elliott for the lead in the race’s final laps, Keselowski found his ace in the hole when the car of William Byron — who is, coincidentally, Elliott’s teammate — brought out a caution with two laps to go. Faced with the choice of remaining out on old tires or coming to pit road for fresh rubber, Keselowski and his team opted to stay out, believing that track position would be golden in a two-lap dash to the checkered flag. Their forecast proved to be correct, as Keselowski managed to hold the field at bay and capture his first win of the 2020 campaign and first ever victory in the Coca-Cola 600.

CHASE ELLIOTT NEEDS TO KEEP EMOTIONS IN CHECK

Chase Elliott needs to catch his breath and take a minute to reflect on how he would like to be perceived by the NASCAR fanbase. Up until this past week, the sport’s two-time most popular driver had managed to maintain a pretty clean image, despite a few ontrack dustups. But after being wrecked by Kyle Busch at Darlington on Wednesday night, Elliott promptly emerged from his car and gave Busch the proverbial one-finger salute. Then on Sunday, after a late caution erased his comfortable lead, Elliott used some highly unsavory language over his in-car radio. Come on, Chase. There’s nothing wrong with showing emotion, but you can do better than this. JA RED TURNER ▶  RACING WITH NO FANS STILL SEEMS WEIRD Sunday night’s Coca-Cola 600 was the third consecutive event that NASCAR’s premier series has staged without fans. Unfortunately, the absence of fans in the stands doesn’t feel any more natural with time. If anything, it seems more unnatural with each passing race. Of course, NASCAR has announced that all races run through at least June 21 will be held without fans in attendance. The next tracks affected are Bristol, Atlanta, Martinsville, Homestead and Talladega. Let’s hope that by the time June rolls around, fans will be welcomed back at the track. This much is certain: It can’t happen soon enough.

■■ Chase Elliott and Kyle Busch have butted heads in recent races.

0 1 8

▶  MIDWEEK RACES WILL SOON LOSE NOVELTY After Wednesday night’s thriller at Darlington, Twitter was abuzz with banter centered around the idea that NASCAR should institute more midweek races in the near future. After all, the argument was, who says NASCAR needs to be primarily a weekend sport? Well, I do. Here’s why: As exciting and novel as it might be right now to dream about regularly tuning in for or attending midweek races, the reality is that many fans simply can’t do either, due to work and/or family obligations. So while midweek races might be fun for the time being, they don’t need to become a staple of the schedule. Not by a longshot.

IN THE HOTSEAT

IN THE PITS Breanna O’Leary BY ROB TIONGSON

While the drivers garner the attention with their on-track efforts, there are the select women and men who go over the wall during each race to make a difference. In this special segment, the spotlight is on Breanna O’Leary, a tire changer in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. ▶  CONSIDERING YOUR JOURNEY SO FAR AND WITH YOUR PROGRESS, HOW WOULD YOU EVALUATE YOUR JOURNEY SO FAR IN NASCAR? DO YOU FEEL LIKE THERE’S CERTAIN THINGS YOU CRITIQUE YOURSELF ON TO IMPROVE UPON YOUR EFFORTS AS WE PREPARE FOR NASCAR’S RETURN? Oh yeah, no I think even as an athlete, you always look back and think, “Dang I coulda done this differently” or “coulda done this better” or even if it’s something you’re giving your all, you’ll always look back and you’re not satisfied, in a good way of course, just like a drive to keep you going. And, I think that’s where I’m at right now. Obviously, my situation this year is a lot different than last year. So mentally, that’s something I have to fight through, but skill-wise, and even mentally wise, I’d say I’m where I should be. ▶  WITH YOUR CURRENT ROUTINE, WITH THINGS GETTING SLOWLY BACK TO NORMAL, HOW DO THINGS WORK NOWADAYS? AND DO YOU GET CALLED UP TO WORK FOR A CERTAIN TEAM? For me, being an independent contractor, who goes through a pit school, the pit school is almost like our middle man, maybe like our manager almost, who the smaller teams go to him and tell them like, “We need a crew for the full season for this, this, and this car.” And then, just based on talent and skill, the pit school kinda assigns us different cars hopefully for the whole season unless something happens. Then things get rearranged, but that’s how it works for me. ▶  WHAT SONG HAS BEEN STUCK IN YOUR HEAD LATELY? Because it’s always in my head, it’s “Rich” by Maren Morris.

Kyle Busch advocating mask use!

There are times when Kyle Busch can certainly incite polarizing reactions for his actions on the track. However, his social media post regarding the usage of masks during the pandemic is something we can all agree on. While NASCAR and short track series are returning during this new normal, we can’t ignore the fact that we are still fighting this invisible battle against COVID-19. Please heed to Kyle Busch’s advice and continue to wear a mask when in the public.

BorisJGR shared the image seen all around the NASCAR scene from this past week. Indeed, who’ll ever forget Denny Hamlin’s lifelike mask from Wednesday night’s Toyota 500k? ▶  In week two of NASCAR’s return, Kurt Busch had a case of the incorrect firesuit during Coca-Cola 600 qualifying. Accidentally grabbing his firesuit from last season with the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series badge instead of this year’s with the NASCAR Cup Series insignia, perhaps it was a “happy accident” since Busch nabbed the pole for Sunday’s 600-miler. One thing that certainly carried over from last year for Busch is the tenacity and speed that led to a Playoffs appearance. 0 2 6

Seriously, seeing the gold uniform with the bear wasn’t that bad!

MILITARY MEMORIES

ON MEMORIAL DAY O

n this Memorial Day, we honor those brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our country’s common purpose. Histoirically, the NASCAR industry has honored the United States Armed Forces heroes and their families as part of NASCAR Salutes Refreshed by Coca-Cola – an industry-wide expression of respect, appreciation and reverence for those who have served the nation both past and present. Yesterday marked the sixth straight year in which the 600 Miles of Remembrance had naming rights to the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. NASCAR Cup Series race cars carried the name of a fallen service member on the windshield during the race in honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Here are some memories of NASCAR drivers paying tribute to United States Armed Forces heroes through the years. 0 3 4
