Alex Bowman Scores His First Win In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through the top stories in NASCAR, and today, he’s got a review of Chicagoland. With the rain delays threatening to take out the event entirely, it was a relief when it got underway under the lights. One of the key factors at Chicago’s 1.5 mile track is the restarts, much like the other 1.5 miles this year as the drivers run the 2019 aero package. The entire field can be scrambled at each restart, with at one point Alex Bowman starting at the front of the pack, and ending up in twelfth by the end of the lap. Restarts are unforgiving or miraculous, depending on your seat. 0 0 4

Chicagoland Rearview: June 27, 2019

And speaking of the young Hendrick team member, the major storyline coming out of Chicagoland was the first time win for No. 88 driver Alex Bowman. While Kevin Harvick, Joey Logano, and Kyle Busch all appeared to be dominating at various points in the race, each succumbed to the dangers. Logano took out himself and Busch, and Kevin Harvick even managed to make a mistake that couldn’t be pinned on his team. So what does Bowman’s win mean for his future in NASCAR? And how did this year’s Chicacgoland race stack up on Eric’s patented Groovy Gauge? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

Hendrick Driver Scores First Win in No. 88

O

n a day when the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas of Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. were uncharacteristically less than stellar, Alex Bowman took full advantage and executed a bold late-race pass on Kyle Larson to score his first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory. Before the series heads back to Daytona, here are five takeaways from Sunday’s Camping World 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. By Jared Turner

Alex Really Is ‘Bowman The Showman’

A

fter winning the pole for the 2018 Daytona 500 to kick off his first full season with Hendrick Motorsports, Alex Bowman was playfully dubbed “Bowman The Showman” by some fans and commentators of the sport. While Bowman has been reluctant to embrace the moniker, it seems pretty appropriate after his showman-like post-race victory celebration at Chicagoland. So caught up was Bowman in the moment that he failed to remember it had rained heavily just a few hours earlier. The result was his No. 88 Chevrolet getting stuck in the grass while attempting a celebratory burnout or something like it. So, before Bowman’s car could go to Victory Lane, it had to get pushed out of the wet grass. “I made a really bad choice and came down here in the dirt and forgot about the rain today,” Bowman said. “I’m the dumb guy that won the race and got the car stuck in the mud.”

Kyle Busch And Martin Truex Jr. Have Off-Days, Too

C

oming into the race weekend, Kyle Busch had finished in the top 10 a remarkable 15 times in 16 races this season and scored four victories. Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Martin Truex Jr., though not as consistent as Busch, had likewise earned four wins, and had been the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series’ hottest driver over the past two-and-a-half months. But on Sunday at Chicagoland, both Truex and Busch looked atypically average, as neither driver led a lap and the two finished ninth and 22nd, respectively. “We fought it hard,” Truex said. “We knew at the end of practice that we were a little bit lost.” Busch’s finishing position was somewhat deceiving, however, as he was forced to bring his car to pit road for an unscheduled stop after suffering a flat tire from contact with Joey Logano while the two battled for a position in the top five in the latter part of the race.

Chicagoland Was Just What Hendrick Motorsports Needed

T

he 2019 Monster Energy Series season has in many ways been a disappointment for Hendrick Motorsports, winners of just one of the first 16 races. But Sunday’s showdown at Chicagoland was the ultimate breakout race for the fabled organization, which sent Alex Bowman to Victory Lane for the first time in his career and placed three of its four drivers in the top eight and all four in the top 11. Aside from Bowman, the most notable Hendrick finisher was fourth-place Jimmie Johnson, who led 10 laps and came home in the top five for just the second time in 17 races this season — Johnson’s first with crew chief Kevin Meendering calling the shots for the No. 48 team. “I’m really proud of everyone,” said Johnson, a seven-time champion and 83-time premier series winner who has gone more than two years since his last victory. “I’m extremely happy for Hendrick Motorsports. It was a good night.”

Kyle Larson Is Starting To Find His Rhythm

E

quipped with one of the fastest cars at Chicagoland on Sunday, Kyle Larson looked to be sailing toward his first win since 2017 after methodically chasing down Alex Bowman and snatching the lead away from the Hendrick Motorsports driver with eight laps to go. But as quickly as it looked like Larson had the race in hand, Bowman rallied by retaking the lead and pulling away to his first career victory. The outcome, though disappointing for Larson, said a lot about how far the Chip Ganassi Racing driver has come after posting just two top-10 finishes in the season’s first 10 points races. Since that time, he’s recorded four top-10s and five top-15s in seven points-paying starts. Sandwiched somewhere in the middle was a victory by Larson in the nonpoints-paying Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. If Larson can continue at this pace, a return to Victory Lane seems almost inevitable.

Alex Bowman Wasn’t Going To Be Denied This Time

I

t took 134 attempts and some disappointments along the way, but Alex Bowman is finally a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race winner. Tapped to replace retiring Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the iconic No. 88 car after the 2017 season, Bowman accomplished a lifelong dream with his victory on Sunday at Chicagoland, where it looked like he was going to finish second for the fourth time this year after being run down and passed for the lead by Kyle Larson with eight laps to go. But just when it seemed like Bowman was bound for another runner-up finish, he seemingly found another gear and retook the lead from Larson two laps later. Bowman never trailed again. “I’m just tired of running second,” Bowman said. “I don’t want to do that anymore. So, I feel like this is the last box, aside from chasing the championship. I needed it personally, for myself, to validate my career.”

Just Sayin’ Chicagoland Speedway was able to complete its race Sunday thanks to the Air Titan system and the track’s lights.

Kudos To NASCAR For Being Weather-Ready By Jared Turner

A

few weeks ago at Michigan International Speedway, Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers and teams had to stay an extra day because of persistent rain showers that forced the postponement of the race, which had been originally scheduled for a Sunday afternoon start but was delayed a full 24 hours. Completing Sunday’s race at Chicagoland Speedway on the day of the scheduled event appeared equally doubtful when severe thunderstorms and a deluge of rain forced NASCAR to halt proceedings and fans to head for safe cover after just 11 green-flag laps. But following an extended red flag period of 3 hours, 18 minutes during which NASCAR’s mighty Air Titan did an exemplary job of drying the track, the race resumed. And, thankfully, it was able to be run in its entirety, with no more delays for weather. While the chances of getting the race in on Sunday were certainly buoyed by the fact that Chicagoland Speedway has lights, NASCAR deserves tremendous credit for not just getting the race in, but for doing so within a very reasonable timeframe, given the circumstances (the race ended before 9:30 p.m. ET and before 8:30 local time).

0 2 0

Chicagoland Rearview: June 27, 2019

Had NASCAR been dealt a similar hand from Mother Nature 10 years ago, the race would have probably resumed around the time that it ultimately ended. But thanks to major advances in trackdrying procedures, NASCAR is more equipped than ever to deal with difficult weather situations — Sunday’s being a terrific example. While it’s easy sometimes to focus on the things NASCAR should change or do better as a sport, let’s give credit where credit is due. The fact is that NASCAR’s track-drying capabilities have come an awfully long way in a relatively short time. And for that, every fan of the sport — especially the ones who buy tickets — should be extremely grateful.

otorsports Safety Group is a collaboration of innovators in the sport who are determined to improve the safety of racing. MSG shares tips for race car drivers to help avoid injuries during races and practice sessions. Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. For Dr. Cormier’s most recent side project, he co-authored an autobiography – with the help of acclaimed author Clifton Lambreth. The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things. “I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. People were pushing me to share my life experiences because there are many others currently suffering through some of the same things. My hope is that people might draw from

this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.” Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal

health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about

his past unearthed some feelings that he’d compartmentalized for years. “You don’t really know how your parents’ divorce resonates deep inside you,” Cormier said. “In self-reflection, I don’t think I ever dealt with that correctly. I recall a lot of yelling and screaming in front of us, in addition to physical abuse. That became somewhat of the norm. I kept it hidden and tucked away. I have come to realize that this really wasn’t my fault. Hopefully this helps with issues that others currently deal with – like relationships and friendships. This is what I’ve come through. Things could always be so much worse.”

The Man Behind the Book Dr. Jason Cormier teaches both medical students and residents many innovative neurosurgical techniques including endoscopic pituitary and image-guided surgery, and minimally invasive complex spinal surgery. Dr. Cormier was named as one of “America’s Top Surgeons,” in the field of Neurosurgery, by the Consumers Research Council of America, Guide to America’s top surgeons and currently listed as one of the leading physicians in the world for Neurosurgery. Hot off his victory at Sonoma, his third at the track, Joe Gibbs Racing driver Bobby Zalenski was on pole, but Matt Bussa grabbed the lead on lap 2. Zalenski was able to grab the lead back shortly after a caution on lap four, the only one of the day. G2 eSports driver and secondin-points Keegan Leahy grabbed the lead from

Leahy ran away with the victory, with Renegades driver Corey Vincent, Zalenski, Flipsid3 Tactics pilot Ryan Luza, and Sonoma runner-up Michael Conti rounding out the top five. Luza’s fourth-place finish serves as a nice rebound from a disastrous run at Sonoma two weeks ago. However, that run took its toll, as Leahy’s win, his second of the season, propelled him past Luza in the points standings by two

NASCAR eSports points. Those two stand alone, with third-inpoints Blake Reynolds 35 points behind Leahy. Reynolds has a goose egg in the win column, and only three top five finishes, versus Leahy’s two wins and eight top fives, and Luza’s three wins and seven top fives. To put the top two’s dominance in perspective, let’s look at the points standings a little closer. Keegan Leahy has a 35 point lead over third-place Reynolds. Only 28 points separate Reynolds from eighth-in-points Nick Ottinger. So, while these top two certainly appear to be the favorites for the title, the rest of the field will be jockeying for the opportunity

to make it into and through the playoffs, and, they hope, the chance to challenge Luza and Leahy come Homestead. It isn’t a sure bet that those two will make it to that final race either, though. Given Luza’s record at Sonoma, the appearance of the Charlotte Roval in the playoffs has to be worrying, and anything could happen to Leahy. The NASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series will be back on track on Tuesday, July 9th, at Kentucky Speedway. As always, the race will be at 9 PM eastern time, and will be broadcast live on iRacing’s Twitch channel and the iRacing eSports Network YouTube channel.

NASCAR PETS

Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Jared Turner

L

ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want

0 5 0

to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”
