The Future of FOX Without DW In this episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp talks us through all the hot topics in NASCAR. And this week certainly had its share of impacts! First up, this past weekend was the last race called by legendary driver Darrell Waltrip. It’s a bittersweet piece of history for NASCAR fans, but it may not come off as seamless as fans would hope. It was reported this week that FOX currently has “no plan” to replace Waltrip, despite the fact that his retirement was announced long ago. Eric talks us through the line up of potential replacements, including the likes of Michael 0 0 4

Waltrip, Vince Welch, and even dark horses like Kevin Harvick. But the real big stories lately have come out of the truck series. Ross Chastain continues his dominance, despite setbacks like the Iowa penalty. Eric walks us through the history of this driver and this team, and gives us some insight on how they’ve come to trample over more established teams like Kyle Busch Motorsports. Who would be Eric’s pick to replace DW on the NASCAR broadcast? And what’s next for Ross Chastain and the truck series? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

The Charge to Chicago
Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. remain the favorites

fter a weekend of road course racing out West, it’s back to left turns only as the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series heads to the Midwest for its only visit of 2019 to Chicagoland Speedway — a 1.5-mile track in the suburban Chicago city of Joliet. Here are five key storylines to be on the lookout for in Sunday’s Camping World 400. By Jared Turner

More Struggles For ‘Seven-Time’
W
hat’s harder to believe: The fact that Jimmie Johnson has gone more than two whole years without a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series win or the fact that Johnson — the seventime series champion and one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history — has never won a Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway? Both, of course, seem just about equally perplexing when considering Johnson’s impressive body of work that includes not only the seven championships but also 83 points-paying wins. Yet, for whatever reason, Johnson can’t seem to win for anything these days, and that’s unlikely to change at Chicagoland — a track where he’s mysteriously been shut out of Victory Lane in 17 career Cup starts and failed to finish in the top 10 in four of his last five outings. Oddly enough, Chicagoland was the site of Johnson’s lone career NASCAR Xfinity Series win, which came way back in 2001.

A Chance For The Rules Package To Shine
W
hile the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series’ 2019 rules package continues to be the target of considerable criticism from various drivers, the most notable being Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch, Chicagoland Speedway might be better-suited for this year’s aero rules than any other track on the entire schedule. At exactly a mile-and-a-half in length and featuring a D-shaped layout, fast speeds and moderate banking, Chicagoland is the kind of place where this year’s high-downforce, reduced-horsepower aero rules have the potential to really shine by creating the kind of closer-quarters racing that NASCAR has long desired for its intermediate tracks. Arguably the best race of the season to date came on Mother’s Day weekend at Kansas Speedway, a track bearing notably similar characteristics to Chicagoland. Don’t be surprised if Sunday’s race turns into an equally stellar show, maybe silencing the many critics of the package for at least a couple of days.

Hello, NASCAR on NBC Crew
W
ith the NASCAR on FOX team having wrapped up its portion of the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season last weekend at Sonoma, the NASCAR on NBC broadcast team of Jeff Burton, Steve Letarte, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Rick Allen takes center stage on Sunday at Chicagoland. While this group might lack the folksy, casual style of FOX’s team of Darrell Waltrip, Jeff Gordon, Larry McReynolds and Mike Joy, the NASCAR on NBC bunch offers its own unique flavor that fans have come to enjoy. After all, there’s no one in NASCAR who brings more insight on the sport than Burton, a 21-time Monster Energy Series winner whose nickname is “the mayor.” And, there’s certainly no one who is more beloved than Earnhardt — a winner of NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver Award 15 years in a row leading up his retirement from driving at the end of the 2017 season.

A Long-Awaited Stewart-Haas Racing Breakthrough
A
t some point — and perhaps any day now — Stewart-Haas Racing is going to finally return to a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Victory Lane. Will it happen Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway? Dating back to last season, SHR has now gone a total of 18 races without a win. The fact that the Tony Stewart co-owned organization hasn’t triumphed in 2019 is particularly surprising given that SHR captured a whopping one-third of last season’s 36 races, eight of them belonging to the company’s flagship driver — 2014 series champion Kevin Harvick. That Harvick and the entire organization, which includes 2018 race winners Clint Bowyer and Aric Amirola, have been shut out of Victory Lane this season is bordering on preposterous. Perhaps the best news for SHR heading into the weekend is that Harvick is a two-time Chicagoland winner (albeit with a different team) and finished third here last year after leading 39 laps and recording a stage victory.

Another Kyle Busch vs. Martin Truex Jr. Battle
K
yle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. have combined to win eight of this season’s 16 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races, with each driver capturing four victories to date. As if that statistic isn’t bad enough for their competition, Busch and Truex have also combined to win the last three races at Chicagoland Speedway, with Busch prevailing one year ago and Truex taking the checkered flag at the 1.5-mile track in both 2016 and 2017. Busch also recorded a victory at the suburban Chicago track in 2008. Based on how dominant the two Joe Gibbs Racing teammates have been in 2019, including last weekend at Sonoma Raceway when they finished 1-2 and were light years ahead of the rest of the field, there’s no reason to think Busch and Truex won’t battle it out for the win at a place where they already know the way to Victory Lane quite well.

5 drivers to watch
5 Kyle Busch
By Jared Turner
Martin Truex Jr.
▶▶ Kyle Busch. Kyle Busch continues to flex his proverbial muscle just about everywhere this season, with last weekend’s race on the Sonoma road course being no exception. Chicagoland, where Busch is a two-time winner and went to Victory Lane last summer, should play even more favorably to the driver of the No. 18 Toyota.
Brad Keselowski
▶▶ Martin truex Jr. A winner at Chicagoland in both 2016 and 2017, Martin Truex Jr. returns red-hot and on the heels of an impressive victory last Sunday at Sonoma where he went to Victory Lane for the fourth time already this season. Based on Truex’s performances at Chicagoland and in recent weeks, no one will be surprised if he adds to his 2019 success this weekend.

drivers to watch at chicagoland
▶▶ Brad Keselowski. Brad Keselowski won at Chicagoland in both 2012 and 2014. That’s good news for fans of the Team Penske driver. The even better news, perhaps, is that, with three wins this season, Keselowski has managed to hold his own against the juggernaut that has been Joe Gibbs Racing. ▶▶ Kevin Harvick. When Chicagoland opened in 2001, Kevin Harvick went to Victory Lane. Then, in 2002, he did the same. But, strange as it might seem, Harvick has yet to add a third Chicagoland win. It could happen Sunday, though, especially in light of the fact that Harvick finished third here last year and is desperately seeking his first win of 2019. ▶▶ Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie Johnson has never won a Monster Energy Series race at Chicagoland Speedway. OK, stop and let that sink in for a minute. Johnson did, however, score his only Xfinity Series victory here, so there is that unusual factoid to which he can cling. Will the seven-time champ’s lengthy drought end this weekend? It’s possible but don’t count on it.

Focused and Determined Kyle Busch Makes Up Lap to Win at Talladega By Ben white
O
n April 27, 2008, Kyle Busch, driver of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, scored the victory at Talladega Superspeedway in the Aaron’s 499 after coming back from being a lap down with less than 70 laps to go. Busch also had a close call with Jamie McMurray, driver of the Roush-Fenway Racing Ford, in the closing laps. The two touched, causing McMurray’s car to fade, but Busch was able to continue to the front. With five laps remaining, Busch passed Michael Waltrip for the lead but kept his eyes on the rearview mirror and the tight pack

behind him. He sealed the deal by holding off second-place Juan Pablo Montoya on the backstretch just before an 11car crash in the second turn on the final lap caused the race to end under caution. Busch’s determination gave him his second of eight Cup victories that season. “With about 10 to go … I was running fourth or fifth and got a bump draft and got a huge line … and got into (Jamie) McMurray there,” Busch said. “I don’t know what happened with that scenario and we were able to straighten up and get going. The 42 (Montoya) pushed me all the way to the front. (He) gave me a great shock, got us both up to the front two spots and rode up there and stayed together.”

He is the driver and owner of the No. 77 Dodge Challenger fielded by JF77 Racing, and two of Fecteau’s top-three finishes have come in the popular event at Circuit de Trois-Rivieres. NASCAR Pole Position recently connected with Fecteau for a Q&A about his career and sponsorship opportunities. ▶▶ When did you get a sense that this was something you’d want to do professionally? AN ORIGINAL OFF-ROAD VEHICLE WITH MODERN INNOVATIONS Mahindra has been building vehicles for over 70 years. In fact, 600,000 vehicles every year. We know tractors, automobiles, airplanes, motorcycles and more. A more than $20 billion company supports the ROXOR brand.
Spotlight driver. My old man told me that very few people make a living out of it, but he pushed me to make it happen. I ended up going to school and working for a car manufacturer. Once I was out of school, I joined the pro series, but I was a late-comer. I guess I made the right choice going to school and getting a safe career. Right now, I can enjoy both of them. Would I want to do more racing? Yes, but it’s a challenge getting more seat time and sponsor money. Money is always the key. By having Mahindra ROXOR supporting me, it draws a line to help me fulfill my dream. ▶▶ What do you do for your other job? My dad worked at a car dealership all his life; and I studied at the Canadian Automotive Marketing Business School. I went to a program in Ontario and studied business management and automotive marketing. I spent 16 years with Toyota Canada. I’m no longer with them, but I’m with a company – OEM – that manufactures parts. We’re dealing with John Deere, Caterpillar – those types of businesses. This time of year, it’s difficult to juggle a professional career and professional racing. ▶▶ How did the partnership with Mahindra ROXOR come about? For me to be a representative for the company, I need to believe in it. It’s good to get money, but if I don’t believe in the product, I’ll say no to sponsors. It’s a hard thing to do, but if it’s not reaching your personal conviction, you should not be representing those people. ROXOR is the type of product I like – a multi-functional vehicle that can go off-road.

ROXOR’s Customer Service ocelyn Fecteau is quick to note ROXOR provides the highest level of customer service of any of his former sponsors. “Everywhere I go across North America, I see ROXOR there,” Fecteau said. “It could be an agriculture show, and I’ll go to their booth and see what people are saying. That gives me an ability to better represent the product in the market.” Fecteau rarely hears a complaint about the product. “I haven’t really heard anything negative,” he said. Fecteau has been impressed by ROXOR’s open line of communication with him since the company became his sponsor. “It’s a big company, but they’re very efficient,” Fecteau said. “They give good service. I call them, and they call right back.”

otorsports Safety Group is a collaboration of innovators in the sport who are determined to improve the safety of racing. MSG shares tips for race car drivers to help avoid injuries during races and practice sessions. Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. For Dr. Cormier’s most recent side project, he co-authored an autobiography – with the help of acclaimed author Clifton Lambreth. The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things. “I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. People were pushing me to share my life experiences because there are many others currently suffering through some of the same things. My hope is that people might draw from

this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.” Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal
health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about
his past unearthed some feelings that he’d compartmentalized for years. “You don’t really know how your parents’ divorce resonates deep inside you,” Cormier said. “In self-reflection, I don’t think I ever dealt with that correctly. I recall a lot of yelling and screaming in front of us, in addition to physical abuse. That became somewhat of the norm. I kept it hidden and tucked away. I have come to realize that this really wasn’t my fault. Hopefully this helps with issues that others currently deal with – like relationships and friendships. This is what I’ve come through. Things could always be so much worse.”
The Man Behind the Book Dr. Jason Cormier teaches both medical students and residents many innovative neurosurgical techniques including endoscopic pituitary and image-guided surgery, and minimally invasive complex spinal surgery. Dr. Cormier was named as one of “America’s Top Surgeons,” in the field of Neurosurgery, by the Consumers Research Council of America, Guide to America’s top surgeons and currently listed as one of the leading physicians in the world for Neurosurgery. Dr. Cormier is a member of the American Association of

Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. His busy practice involves performing complex brain and spinal operations on patients from around the country that seek out his surgical acumen.

Cormier crafted his strategic partnership with the ARCA racing series’ safety initiative Program to form a “Motorsports Healthcare Education Plan” Medical car. Utilizing the strength and demographic reach of NASCAR and the ARCA racing series, their mission is to provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. NASCAR PETS
Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Jared Turner
L
ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want
0 4 8
Chicagoland Preview: June 27, 2019
to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”
