REVIEWING THE FUN SIZED RACE AT DARLINGTON In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp is back with another race review and analysis, and this is a special one thanks to the mid-week races NASCAR is putting on over the next few weeks. After the last Darlington race this past weekend, a lot of hype and expectations were built up for this race, and while the rain didn’t allow a full race, the abbreviated race still entered the book as official. There were quite a few names expected to do 0 0 4

well last night, and Eric takes us through the list of rookies and veterans who’ve shown a lot of exciting performances this year. But Eric also takes us through the actual events, and tells us which drivers sadly didn’t live up to those expectations. And, of course, Eric has all the details on what went down between Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott, as well as where this Wednesday night race winds up on the patented Groovy Gauge. All that and more in this week’s episode of Out of the Groove.

THINGS WE LEARNED AT DARLINGTON DENNY HAMLIN WINS RAIN SHORTENED TOYOTA 500K HAMLIN WINS WHILE BUSCH AND ELLIOTT TANGLE The long and agonizing wait is just about over. It’s been more than two months since the engines fired and 40 drivers took the green flag at a real-life racetrack, but NASCAR is ready to make its triumphant return. With the sport set to officially resume on-track activities beginning May 17 with a NASCAR Cup Series event at Darlington Raceway and then host three more Cup races over the next 10 days, here are five things we didn’t realize we loved so much about NASCAR until it was gone. onsider that Kevin Harvick, winner of last Sunday’s Real Heroes 400, piloted the same car that netted him the victory in Round 5 in Wednesday night’s Toyota 500k. With all the work that his Stewart-Haas Racing team put into prepping this strong car for another battle at Darlington Raceway in three days is incredible. After starting 20th, as NASCAR inverted the top20 finishing order from the Real Heroes 400 for Wednesday night’s race, Harvick was quite fast, steady, and consistent. However, he was not as dominant as he was in Sunday’s race as he led on one occasion for 10 laps. Still, a third-place result at the track “Too Tough to Tame” is quite the feat no matter the race distance. As the circuit prepares for Sunday evening’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Harvick and crew chief Rodney Childers turn their focus with winning their second race of 2020.

JIMMIE JOHNSON REBOUNDS WITH EIGHTH AT DARLINGTON
I
f Jimmie Johnson could have a replay during any point of this season, he’d probably use it on Lap 90 of last Sunday’s Real Heroes 400. However, he redeemed himself with a solid eighth-place finish in Wednesday night’s rain-shortened race. While Johnson’s car for the Toyota 500k wasn’t quite as strong as the steel chariot from last Sunday, it seemed to get the job done for the seventime Cup champion and the No. 48 Ally Chevy team. As the sole Bowtie Brigade representative in the top-10, Johnson’s experience and patience was on display in this topsy-turvy race. When varying pit strategies threw competitors for a loop much like a helter-skelter, it seemed like crew chief Cliff Daniels made the right calls to keep his driver and team in the hunt for a respectable result. There’s no doubt that this is a stronger No. 48 team ready to win multiple races.

MATT KENSETH CONTENDS WITH MADDENING DARLINGTON RACE
O
ne of the incredible stories from last Sunday’s race, and much less, during the hiatus, was the return of Matt Kenseth. Clambering into the No. 42 Credit One Bank Chevy Camaro fielded by Chip Ganassi Racing, the future NASCAR Hall of Fame racer placed in the top-10 last Sunday. Starting in 11th for Wednesday night’s race at Darlington, Kenseth ran around the top-10 in the early going before his car was damaged around Lap 83. From there, it was kind of like a famed Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers song in which Kenseth’s night was free fallin’ down the scoring order as the race progressed. Struggling with a damaged car that was ill-handling, the 2003 Cup champion eventually worked his way up to 14th on Lap 158 before making multiple pit stops 20 laps later, eventually placing 30th. Kenseth’s seen better days (and nights) and he likely will at Charlotte.

BUSCH TANGLES WITH FAN FAVORITE CHASE ELLIOTT
O
ne of the biggest storylines emerging from Wednesday night’s Toyota 500k was the Lap 200 incident between Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott on the frontstretch. Elliott was charging his way towards the front and in position to battle for what would’ve been for the win against Denny Hamlin. However, Busch clipped Elliott’s left rear quarter panel which sent the latter right into the inside retaining wall and out of the race. Naturally, Elliott was peeved with Busch and proceeded to salute the two-time Cup Series champion with the number one gesture. As for Busch, who placed runner-up, he took ownership for their contact as he said, “I made a mistake, I misjudged the space. I apologize but it’s not like we’re gonna go have ice cream.” While the fisticuffs likely won’t happen due to physical distancing, Chase Elliott has a big on-track withdrawal that he’ll make at the bank someday.

HAMLIN EARNED WIN WITH SOME DARLINGTON LUCK
I
f you’re going to lead just 12 laps in a race, it might as well be the final 12. That was the case for Denny Hamlin as he captured his second win of the year and his third overall at “The Lady in Black.” Starting relatively midfield in 16th, Hamlin was steady all evening long as he placed eighth in Stage 1 and seventh in Stage 2. As the race progressed, Hamlin’s No. 11 FedEx Toyota Camry kept getting faster and stronger. In fact, he found some Darlington luck in the waning laps. When Matt Kenseth brought out the yellow on Lap 178, it trapped many racers one lap down. However, Hamlin remained on the lead lap and inherited the lead during a round of yellow flag pit stops on Lap 197. Taking the win after heavy rain fell over Darlington, Hamlin also won with his rather creative face mask.

t took him 12 ½ seasons and a total of 25 tries, but on June 15, 2014, Jimmie Johnson finally pulled into Victory Lane at Michigan International Speedway for the first time. Rest assured that the significance of this milestone wasn’t lost on the seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and driver of the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Nor was the fact that it happened to be Father’s Day or the fact that team owner Rick Hendrick was in attendance or the fact that MIS is the track where manufacturer bragging rights reach their crescendo, since the headquarters of General Motors and Ford are just down the road in Detroit, Michigan and Dearborn, Michigan, respectively. “Winning on Father’s Day, having my family here, having the boss here, it’s all exciting,” Johnson said after taking the checkered flag 1.214 seconds ahead of second-place Kevin Harvick to win the Quicken Loans 400. “He (Hendrick) wasn’t here at the last race win that we had, so it’s fun to see his face in

Victory Lane, for Chevrolet to win in their own backyard. We need to switch that stat where that other brand wins too much here, and we need to get the bowtie more victories here. Just a lot of things to be happy for.” With a history of heartbreaks and near-misses at MIS, Johnson couldn’t help but stress a bit in the final laps about the possibility of something going awry — despite being comfortably out front. “We had a good lead, so it allowed me to take care of my stuff,” the seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion said. “I wasn’t taking anything for granted on that final trip around, and about 200 yards before the finish line, I knew if the car exploded, I’d still slide across the finish line and it didn’t matter. That’s finally when I relaxed and let it go.”

Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson will interview various drivers in the world of NASCAR. Today, he talks with seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson. ▶ AS THE SEASON RESUMES FOLLOWING THE TWOMONTH COVID-19 HIATUS, WHAT’S YOUR INITIAL FEELINGS WITH RETURNING TO THE SEAT OF YOUR NO. 48 ALLY CHEVROLET AND BEING AN INTEGRAL PART OF NASCAR’S RETURN? Well, first and foremost, we are still thinking of those who have been affected by this pandemic and hope people continue to be safe. I have missed racing more than anything in the world! ▶ OVER THE YEARS, YOU’VE HAD A “WHO’S WHO” OF SUPERSTAR TEAMMATES IN YOUR NASCAR AND MOTORSPORTS CAREER. WHO ARE SOME TEAMMATES THAT YOU FEEL YOU’VE LEARNED A GREAT DEAL FROM, NOT ONLY WITH RACING, BUT WITH LIFE, AND WHAT WERE THE QUALITIES THAT YOU ADMIRED ABOUT THEM? Gosh, great question. There have been so many, and I have always been close to all my teammates. I feel like Jeff Gordon has been so instrumental to my career – on and off the track. He is a true champion, and amazing father, a smart businessman and just an all-around great person. Dale Earnhardt Jr. and I became close while he was at Hendrick. I still see and talk to him a lot. Dale is a really sensitive, introspective and deep person. The guy has a heart of gold and it’s been amazing to see him become a husband and a father. His career in the booth is also a natural for him. So, I would have to say Dale Jr. and Jeff, for sure.

▶ YOU’VE COMPETED AGAINST SOME OF THE BEST IN THE WORLD OF RACING. WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE RIVALS, AND WHICH OF THOSE ON-TRACK BATTLES STAND OUT TO YOU? Battling with Carl Edwards in Atlanta and Denny Hamlin for championships in Miami– even Kurt Busch when things came down to the wire. Competing against Jeff was tough at times too. There is a level of respect we all have for each other, but we have had some great on-track battles. 0 2 2

▶ YOU’VE BEEN ABSOLUTELY DEVOTED TO YOUR PHYSICAL FITNESS, WHETHER IT’S RUNNING, CYCLING, OR COMPETING IN TRIATHLONS. WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST WITH THIS AND HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND WORKING OUT TO MAINTAIN OR STRENGTHEN YOURSELF? Yes, my training has become a lifestyle. Although during this time away I admit I have hit the refrigerator a little too much. I try to spend a few hours a day training. It helps me physically and mentally.

HOW SPECIAL HAS IT BEEN TO RACE FOR ONLY HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS IN YOUR NASCAR CUP SERIES CAREER? It’s been incredible. That place is my family. I’ve made friends there, watched people go through all kinds of life changes, and Mr. Hendrick has always been there for me. I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s been the best experience ever.

WHAT WERE YOUR TAKEAWAYS WITH TAKING ON THE WORLD OF IRACING IN YOUR FAMILIAR NO. 48 CHEVY AND IN AN INDYCAR? My takeaway is for me to not quit my day job and become an iRacer! The sims are cool, but nothing really compares to the real thing. ▶ LET’S SAY THAT HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS THREW A “VIRTUAL JIMMIE JOHNSON APPRECIATION DAY” FOR YOU AND YOUR FANS. WHICH MUSICIANS WOULD YOU INVITE TO PERFORM FOR YOUR AND YOUR SUPPORTERS, AND WOULD THERE BE THE CHANCE YOU’D SING OR PERFORM A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT WITH ONE OF THE MUSICIANS? I’m a music guy, so I would say the lineup would include Snoop Dogg, Darius Rucker, Chris Stapleton, The Avett Brothers, Midland, my buddy Doug Keith, G Love, Metallica, and if John Denver was still alive, I would love to hear him sing. I would play the triangle or cowbell. ▶ AS WE’VE ALL ADJUSTED TO THIS TEMPORARY NEW “NORMAL” IN OUR LIVES, WHAT’VE BEEN SOME OF THE POSITIVE TAKEAWAYS FOR YOU THAT YOU FEEL REENERGIZED YOUR OUTLOOK WITH RACING AND YOUR PERSPECTIVE WITH LIFE OUTSIDE OF THE TRACK? I’ve developed a newfound respect for frontline heroes. I have cherished every minute with my family, and I have learned to be a homeschool educator. Scott’s lone NASCAR Cup Series victory came on December 1, 1963 at Jacksonville, Fla. Scott was forced to retire from NASCAR as a result of a near-fatal crash at Talladega Superspeedway in 1973. He did return in October of that year at Charlotte Motor Speedway and finished 12th. He often ended his seasons in the top-10 in points, his best being sixth in 1966. Overall statistics show that cars carrying No. 1 in the NASCAR Cup Series have recorded only 20 victories while posting 431 top-10 finishes in 1,523 starts. B.E. Lloyd Dane, of Eldon, Missouri, was the first driver to win a Cup Series race in car No. 1. That victory came on Sept. 23, 1956, at Oregon’s Portland Speedway. McMurray, Donnie Allison and Billy Wade are the top race winners as each driver has four victories while driving car No. 1. Frey, front end mechanic for Stewart Haas Racing and driver Clint Bowyer, saw his first NASCAR race in the mid1990s at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. “I went with friends to Sonoma for the drag races there and also Cup races,” Frey said. “I’m from the middle of nowhere (Ferndale, Calif.) so even going a few hours was big. We really didn’t travel all that much.” Both of Frey’s grandfathers were mechanics with cars, farm tractors and other machinery. As a result, Frey grew up working at the same farm implement company that employed several family members.. “I raced some myself but I was also realistic about having too little money to do it,” Frey said. “So it was a lot less expensive for me to help someone else race. I was a part of it by working on things, you might say.” Frey attended a technical school in Wyoming to work on passenger cars and enjoyed his job. After coming to North Carolina for the Coca Cola 600 with friends he raced with in California in 2003, they met with a fellow friend that worked with Ganassi Racing and eventually found themselves employed there themselves. Frey joined Michael Waltrip Racing in 2012 and H Scott Motorsports in 2016 before going to Stewart Haas Racing in 2017. I joined because I like the way you get more perks. We get up close with drivers and the introductions. We’ve gotten to ride the pace car. The things they offer you are things you wouldn’t be able to do as a regular fan.” ▶ WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE DRIVER? “He just came back -- Matt Kenseth. I don’t know why I went with him, but I did. He seemed like a nice person. When he left, it was hard to pick another driver. I went with someone different depending on the week.”

A TURN OF FAVOR
AT THE 1989 ALL-STAR RACE AT Charlotte, Darrell Waltrip was leading Rusty Wallace to the checkered flag when Wallace sent Waltrip sliding across the infield grass. Crews scuffled over the finish. Wallace won the race, but Waltrip won over the fans while Wallace became viewed as the overly aggressive driver.

AT THE 1965 NATIONAL 400, FRED LORENSEN, A.J. Foyt and Dick Hutcherson treated fans to some entertaining racing. They went three wide battling for the lead - and maintained the heated push for 44 laps. It was unlike racing seen in the past. Then, with six laps to go, Foyt hit the wall and was out of contention. Finally, Lorenzen surged ahead of Hutcherson and held on for the win.

JJ BY A NOSE AT THE 2005 COCA-COLA 600 BEFORE HE was a five-time champion, Jimmie Johnson was already making history. In 2005, Johnson and Bobby Labonte waged a stellar battle for the win in the Coca-Cola 600. In the end, Johnson edged Labonte by .27 of a second, the closest margin of victory in the race.

BEFORE HE WAS KNOWN FOR HIS ABILITY TO contend for wins, Dale Earnhardt Jr. made his mark on the sport at the 2000 All-Star Race. In his rookie season, Earnhardt Jr. and his team opted to pit for four tires late in the race - and then started charging back through the traffic. Dale Jarrett, his car coughing smoke, held the lead at the white flag. Earnhardt Jr. pulled to his outside and slowly pulled past Jarrett - to take the prestigious win in his rookie year.

THE INTIMIDATOR DELIVERS THE COCA-COLA 600 WAS REINVENTED AS A DAY-TOnight event in 1993, the year after lights were added at the Charlotte track, and nobody in that race shined brighter than Dale Earnhardt. Of course, it didn’t exactly start out that way — the Intimidator was forced to make a pass-through penalty after speeding on pit road. Later, he was sent to the rear of the field for having too many men over the wall. He rebounded and was running second with 73 laps remaining when he spun the lapped car of Greg Sacks trying to get by. For that, Earnhardt was hit with another penalty — rough driving. Earnhardt went on to win, adding another colorful chapter to both the Intimidator legacy, and that of NASCAR’s longest race.

KYLE BUSCH & CHASE ELLIOTT - THIS ISN’T OVER! This week, popular YouTuber and streamer Rusty Walrus is back outside in his car for another fast reaction to last night’s race, and this one sure had a lot to react to and comment on. With this being the first Wednesday night race in decades, and with so much built up over the past few days after the previous weekend’s Darlington race, this was sure to be an action packed night. Without a doubt, the biggest storyline coming out of last night’s race was the dust 0 5 0
up between Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott, all taking place on what turned out to be the final lap due to a rain storm. As many have noted, it’s probably for the best that the race was run without fans, as the anger from the drivers alone was palpable. But Rusty talks more than just the conflict, as there was plenty of long green flag runs and on track action to make the night one to remember. Check out what Rusty has to say about it all in the latest episode!

NASCAR RELEASE outside of the U.S. and Canada. “IMG ARENA is the leading partner for global sports and entertainment media. We are excited to work together to provide a global audience the ability to engage with our sport virtually and in realtime,” said Scott Warfield, Managing Director of Gaming, NASCAR. “The international sports gaming landscape is mature and vibrant, and this partnership allows us to offer compelling products that further enhance our international footprint.” “Adding NASCAR to our client roster is a proud achievement. The brand is renowned in sport and entertainment with the highoctane race series providing must-watch, appointmentviewing content for more than 70 years,” said Freddie Longe, Executive Vice President and Managing Director at IMG ARENA. “The partnership significantly bolsters our streaming and official virtual sports offering with a product that we expect to be popular in a number of different markets.” This partnership comes on the heels of an announcement 0 5 4
made earlier this year introducing Penn National Gaming as NASCAR’s first authorized gaming operator in the United States. The partnership centered around a free-to-play, mobile game named NASCAR Finish Line, which offers users the chance to win a $25,000 jackpot every race. Headquartered in London, IMG ARENA works with more than 460 leading sportsbook operators worldwide, providing alwayson services including 24/7 live streaming and on-demand virtual sports products designed to evolve and inspire engagement by placing fans at the heart of the action. Its ground-breaking data collection system ensures that the fastest and most accurate sources of data are delivered live from the action to the end user in less than a second. In the past year, NASCAR announced a series of agreements to prepare the industry and its fans for the rapidly growing sports betting landscape in the U.S., including its first authorized gaming operator, an exclusive data partnership, an integrity partner to safeguard and protect the sport, and unique content deals. Furthermore, the sanctioning body granted all teams and tracks the ability to sell marketing sponsorships to sports betting companies and licensed sportsbooks.
