EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE NASCAR RETURNS In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp does things a little different than usual. Rather than reviewing and analyzing this week’s storylines, Eric instead takes us through all of 2020’s NASCAR storylines to help catch us up before racing returns this week at Darlington. There is, of course, the season so far. Ending abruptly in March, just before Atlanta, only four Cup races were able to run in 2020. However, these were some of the most interesting and exciting 0 0 4

races in many years, and Eric takes us through what happened race by race. But that’s not all in this episode. Eric also takes us through the entire Pro Invitational series, including some of the driver changes we’ll see at Darlington that came as fallout from the iRacing events. Find out everything you need to know before NASCAR returns on this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, and share it with your non-NASCAR fan friends!

THINGS WE DIDN’T REALIZE WE LOVED ABOUT NASCAR The long and agonizing wait is just about over. It’s been more than two months since the engines fired and 40 drivers took the green flag at a real-life racetrack, but NASCAR is ready to make its triumphant return. With the sport set to officially resume on-track activities beginning May 17 with a NASCAR Cup Series event at Darlington Raceway and then host three more Cup races over the next 10 days, here are five things we didn’t realize we loved so much about NASCAR until it was gone. THE GAMESMANSHIP OF THE COMPETITORS

T

rue racers — it has been said — will race anything, anytime, anywhere. That certainly proved to be true during this recent sabbatical from “real” racing. Motivated by their insatiable thirst to “drive” anything that moves and take advantage of any opportunity to outrun a fellow driver, competitors from each of NASCAR’s top three divisions convened on multiple occasions from the comfort of their respective at-home simulators to particulate in an iRacing experience on a virtual racetrack. Among the highlights of these races — some of which were broadcast live on FS1 and drew large TV audiences — were Jeff Gordon coming “out of retirement” to race at a virtual Talladega Superspeedway, and 15-time NASCAR most popular driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. doing the same on more than one occasion. Not surprising in light of the drivers’ competitive fires, there were even a few moments of (somewhat) lighthearted tension among the competitors, who seemed to hate losing on a simulator as much as they do on an actual racetrack.

THE LEVEL OF FAN ENGAGEMENT FROM THE DRIVERS

D

uring their time away from the actual racetrack, drivers engaged fans in a number of ways. One of most unique ways that drivers stayed connected was by signing their “digital autograph,” which usually happened when a fan would put a photo on Twitter requesting a signature. To get the driver’s attention, the fan would generally tag the driver and include a short message noting their request. Once receiving the digital photo, the driver would screenshot it, sign it on their phone or another electronic device, and send it back to the fan. Among the drivers to get it on the “digital autograph” action were Corey LaJoie, Hailie Deegan and Austin Theriault. JR Motorsports went as far as to announce via the team’s official Twitter page that its drivers would be participating in a “digital autograph” session throughout the day on March 19. To get an autograph from a JRM driver, fans were encouraged to tag @JRMotorsports and use the hashtag #JRMDigitalAutograph on Twitter.

THE MEDIA-FRIENDLINESS AND FAN-FRIENDLINESS

W

ith a lot more time on their hands than usual, drivers were generally very accessible to both the fans and the media during the more than two-month break from competition. I personally was afforded the opportunity to interview several drivers, including Alex Bowman, Matt DiBenedetto, Erik Jones, Jordan Anderson, Justin Haley, Riley Herbst and Grant Enfinger. In addition to being media-friendly to print reporters like myself, drivers also made numerous TV appearances — one of the more memorable ones coming from Jimmie Johnson, who surprised a Michigan-based ER nurse by showing up NBCSN’s “Lunch Talk Live” with Mike Tirico. The male nurse, who is a big fan of Johnson, was talking with Tirico on-air when Johnson suddenly appeared on the set and offered some words of gratitude for the nurse’s efforts while being on the frontlines of treating patients affected by COVID-19. “You are such an inspiration to all of us,” Johnson said. “I can’t imagine what you and your family are dealing with.”

NASCAR’S RESOLVE TO GO RACING

W

hile executives from other sports leagues still can’t seem to be able to make up their mind about when play will resume, NASCAR execs were decisive in recently announcing that the sport would return to on-track action beginning with a May 17 NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway. Although Darlington originally wasn’t supposed to host a race until Labor Day weekend, NASCAR’s top brass realized that if racing was going to return anytime soon, they were going to have to think outside the box a bit. So, Darlington will now host three Cup races (up from one race on the original schedule), as will Charlotte Motor Speedway (up from two points races originally). NASCAR executives clearly thought long and hard about a way to bring the sport back — even if meant doing so without fans being allowed to attend, and that’s exactly what will happen when the Cup series competes at Darlington on May 17 and 20, and at Charlotte on May 24 and 27.

HOW MUCH NASCAR GIVES BACK

D

espite taking its own proverbial punch to the gut as a result of having to postpone numerous events in response to COVID-19, NASCAR should be applauded for still making a difference. The sport is teaming up with “The Real Heroes Project” to recognize the courage of frontline workers who have stepped up and put others before themselves throughout this pandemic. Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick are the drivers participating in the project by honoring a special healthcare hero who is helping the community on the forefront of the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, NASCAR has been utilizing 3D printers at its Research & Development Center in Concord, North Carolina to produce face shields for healthcare workers. In total, 2,000 face shields have been sent around the country for medical professionals. Meanwhile, the NASCAR Foundation has joined the #GivingTuesdayNow movement, standing together in unity with people around the world to share the same mission of helping children in need.

RECAPPING JIMMIE JOHNSON’S NASCAR CAREER

■■ Jimmie Johnson’s No. 48 team celebrated his win at Phoenix in 2007.

JOHNSON ICES 2007 CHAMPIONSHIP WITH WIN AT PHOENIX BY JA RED TURNER

J

immie Johnson has had a lot of great seasons since joining NASCAR’s top series full time in 2002. However, no season has quite compared to 2007 — when he earned a career-high 10 victories on the way to his second championship. Johnson, who a year earlier enjoyed a five-win campaign, was even more unstoppable in 2007 as he made the battle for the championship a virtual snooze fest in the final weeks. Johnson’s final victory came in the season’s next-to-last race, the Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix Raceway. Arriving in the Valley of the Sun red hot after going to Victory Lane the previous three weekends at Martinsville, Atlanta and Texas, respectively, Johnson all but put the championship on ice by winning his fourth race in a row. Although Johnson wasn’t dominant at Phoenix, his Chevrolet still led 55 of 312 laps, including the final 24 laps, to take the checkered flag .870 seconds ahead of the Fords of Roush Fenway Racing teammates Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth. “I think we had a third-place car most of the day,” Johnson said.

0 1 8

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: MAY 15, 2020

“I think the 17 (Kenseth) and the 1 (Martin Truex Jr.) were probably the best two cars. I was really impressed with Matt. I think at one point he had 30 lap older tires than I did, and I had fresh tires, and I couldn’t catch him. “Everything just came together for us. We finally figured out what our car wanted, to roll the center a little bit better without sacrificing corner exit. So we were just coming into our groove, and circumstances on tires worked out and off we went.” Prior to 2007, Johnson’s career-high for wins in a single season was eight victories. “When we won the 8 in ‘04, I think we even talked about it and said that was probably going to be the high win number for this decade from here forward,” Johnson said. “So to have 10 really is a surprise to us.”

Bayley Currey BY ROB TIONGSON

Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson will interview various drivers in NASCAR. This week, he talks with Bayley Currey of the NASCAR XFINTIY Series and NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series. ▶  YOU HAIL FROM THE AUSTIN, TEXAS, AREA. HOW’D YOU GET YOUR START IN MOTORSPORTS? I’m from Driftwood, Texas, just south of Austin. I got started because my dad raced in the Thunderhill Speedway in Kyle in the limited late model class out there. I always wanted to do it. From there, I got into go-karts and slowly worked my way up to where I am now. ▶  WAS PURSUING A NASCAR CAREER SOMETHING THAT YOU WANTED TO DO OR BECAUSE YOU WANTED TO CARRY THE FAMILY LEGACY? My dad being in racing made me want to do it. I wanted to be like my dad. As soon as I started, I fell in love with it and wanted to do it for the rest of my life. ▶  HOW HARD IS IT TO MANAGE TIRES AND EQUIPMENT BUT NOT COMPROMISE YOUR EQUIPMENT TO GET THE BEST FINISH POSSIBLE? It just comes down to you driving as hard as you can every lap. There’s obviously that line that you can’t step over. You can feel it in the racecar. But you go as hard as you can and as hard as you feel as far the tires can go. ▶  WITH NASCAR’S LIMITED ON-TRACK TESTING POLICY, HOW HELPFUL IS VIRTUAL RACING LIKE IRACING? The visual reference points are what helps me the most by seeing the actual shape of the racetrack. My setup is pretty low budget. I’ve got a steering wheel and pedals at my desk in my apartment and my laptop sitting on top of a shoebox for the screen. It works and I figure out what I figure out and we usually show up pretty good.

Parks began his career as a stock car owner in 1938 with drivers Lloyd Seay and Roy Hall, two very talented moonshine runners that showcased their talents on dirt tracks around the South. Though Parks’ team competed for only four NASCAR seasons — 1949, 1950, 1954 and 1955 — he could afford to field the very best cars of that era through various businesses he owned. His team produced two premier series wins, two poles, 11 top-fives and 12 top-10s in 18 events. Drivers Byron, Bob Flock and Hall drove Parks’ cars during the 1949 season. From the beginning of his ownership career until his death, Parks was known for his trademark suits, blazers, white shirts and ties and Fedora hats, even in the days when NASCAR garage areas were often dirty with oil and dust in makeshift work spaces. “I think I was 11 years old when we ran our first Cup race in ‘49, and Mr. Parks had already been there a couple of years,” said seven-time Cup Series champion Richard Petty at Atlanta Motor Speedway in March of 2009. “He was the class of the field; he kind of set the standard. MAKING A CAREER MOVE TANNER GRAY TRANSITIONS FROM DRAG RACING TO NASCAR BY JOSEPH WOLK IN

As Tanner Gray continues his rather smooth transition to NASCAR after years of competing in drag racing, the New Mexico native is ready for any challenge that comes his way. The DGR-Crosley Racing driver is set to compete for the Truck Series championship, and he’s determined to enter Victory Lane. ▶  HOW EXCITED ARE YOU TO GET BACK ON TRACK WITH DGR-CROSLEY? “I’m excited to get back to the track with my DGR-Crosley team. We had a good run at our last race in Las Vegas in March and I feel like we were gaining momentum. It’s hard to be off for about two months, but I’d expect we can pick up right where we left off at Vegas.” ▶  WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS WITH THIS TEAM? “I have high expectations for this team. We bring competitive Ford F-150s to the track every week and I think once we can get back on track and get in a rhythm that will really help. We’ve got Charlotte coming up later this month, which is another intermediate track, so we should be in good shape for that.” 0 2 6

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: MAY 15, 2020

■■ Tanner Gray, driver of the (15) Ford/Ford Performance Ford

▶  HOW DOES YOUR DRAG RACING EXPERIENCE HELP YOU IN STOCK CAR RACING?“My drag racing experience itself doesn’t really help me on the technical side of NASCAR racing, but it taught me a lot about competition and being mentally prepared.” ▶  WHAT IS YOUR LONG-TERM GOAL IN NASCAR? “My long-term goal in NASCAR, or in any form of racing, is to win in whatever I’m driving. I’m really enjoying the NASCAR Truck Series, and I know we are capable of making it to Victory Lane this year. Wherever my driving career takes me, I just want to win.”

Overall statistics show that cars carrying No. 21 in the NASCAR Cup Series have visited Victory Lane 92 times while recording 530 top-10 finishes in 1,584 starts. No. 21 first appeared in a NASCAR Cup Series race on Aug. 7, 1949, when Bobby Greene used the number on his 1948 Ford in series race No. 3 at Occoneechee Speedway in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Harold Kite was the first driver to win a NASCAR Cup Series race in car No. 21. Kite kicked off the series’ second season on Feb. 5, 1950, by driving his 1949 Lincoln to victory on the legendary Beach & Road Course in Daytona Beach, Florida. In addition to Pearson and Yarborough, other drivers with multiple victories in car No. 21 are Neil Bonnett (9), Marvin Panch (8), A.J. Foyt (4) and Speedy Thompson (2). Thirteen drivers have single victories in No. 21, including Tim Flock, Curtis Turner, Buddy Baker and Glen Wood.

lthough Round 7 of the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway was the longest race in terms of mileage, it was also the fastest for this 11-year-old virtual racing division. Certainly, the stars were bright when dusk settled into nightfall over the 1.5-mile speedway as Keegan Leahy, the pole sitter, led the field to green. Emerging as the early favorite, even after the race’s only caution period that fell on Lap 7 for a Turn 4 incident involving Phil Diaz and Dylan Duval, Leahy held the top spot for 28 laps. However, Ryan Luza, the series points leader, looked like the man to beat after climbing from the 12th starting spot into the race lead on Lap 66. Luza’s No. 53 Williams eSport Ford Mustang seemed to run on rails during the long green flag run, particularly during the dusk to night transition.

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: MAY 15, 2020

With Leahy, Luza, and Michael Conti fast off the start of Tuesday evening’s CocaCola 300, they were challenged by Roush Fenway Racing’s Kollin Keister, the 24-year-old rookie racer. For the balance of this event, it was essentially a race between these four fierce, tenacious drivers who amped up the aggression. In this case, Leahy, Luza, and Keister would benefit on a two-stop strategy, a tricky but well executed tactic that provided this trio with great track position and the focus to duke it out for a victory at one of eNASCAR’s crown jewel events of the season. As the race wound down, Keister would assert himself as the man to beat in his No. 17 Fifth Third Bank Ford Mustang, relentlessly holding the lead for 84 of 200 laps. That’s not to say that the rookie racer had it completely easy at virtual Charlotte Motor Speedway. “I actually got mired back in traffic as my pit stop messed

IRACING that up,” Keister said. “Had to drive from 18th and (at the) beginning of those runs, I was kind of out-of-control loose, but it helped in the long run, that’s for sure.” Ultimately, the CocaCola 300 came down to an interesting cat and mouse battle between Keister and Luza. During the final run to the checkered flag, Keister and Luza seemed to trade punches, with one wondering if Luza was saving his tires to make a pass for the lead. Instead, Keister’s biggest challenger ran into some woes, mainly in the handling department. “I thought (Luza) was saving tires there behind me,” Keister observed. “I was able to pull away there at the end. We were really close there for a while, but I was able to drive away with about 30 to go and just kept on going.” With the road to victory a bit easier for Keister, Luza went into defense mode to retain a podium finish. Despite Garrett Lowe taking second spot within the final two laps, Luza took his third-place result in stride. 0 3 2

“For some reason, in the last 10 laps, we were super tight,” Luza said, before observing the big picture with his strong start in the 2020 season. “It’s been great. It’s been all top-fives. The wins are important for the bonus points. Consistency is key. We want to keep on running well.” As for the man behind the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford Mustang, a runner-up at Charlotte was like having a great T-bone steak that was just missing that special sauce. “I just needed a little bit more,” Lowe said. “A little more draft would’ve helped there. Overall, it was a good night. I think it’s more about points racing. I would’ve liked to win. But Atlanta is a second home track.” The seventh race of the 2020 season belonged to Keister nearly 20 years to the night of Matt Kenseth’s first NASCAR Cup Series win, which coincidentally happened at the on-track version of Charlotte Motor Speedway. Enthused and taken aback, the young racer took in his special moment. “It’s awesome,” Keister said. “I’ve wanted to be in this series. It’s huge to get my first one. I’m super excited!” After the longest race of the season, Keister and his competitors tackle the virtual Atlanta Motor Speedway for Round 8 of the season on Tuesday, May 26th, 2020, at 9:00 PM ET/8:00 PM CT. RACING TO THE TOP LYDEN ENJOYS FAMILY ATMOSPHERE OF NASCAR BY BEN WHITE

P

atrick Lyden, tire specialist for Wood Brothers Racing and driver Matt Dibenedetto, grew up watching NASCAR races on television and also attended races at Lake Erie Speedway, a 3/8-mile asphalt track where several of NASCAR’s short track divisions have raced in recent years. In 2001, Lyden’s father purchased a U.S. Legends car to drive himself. As the years progressed, the Lydens were racing all over the country with Patrick driving a second Bandelero as part of their small father-son team. “That was the most fun getting to race with my Dad and travel all over. It was really cool,” Lyden said. “It was sort of to create some fatherson bonding time. We got to race against such guys as Daniel Hemrick, Gray Gaulding, Chris Buescher and Ryan Blaney. It was really a lot of fun. How many people can say they’ve raced against their Dad?” To further his career, Lyden received a degree in motorsports management from Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C., in 2014. Having graduated mid-season, he decided on working in construction until the 2015 racing season began. That year, Lyden got his start in NASCAR when Jordan Anderson, a fellow student at Belmont Abbey, formed his own Gander Outdoors Truck Series team. Lyden later joined NASCAR’s Diversity Program, working as a Late Model mechanic as well as a tire specialist in the K&N Pro Series East. He also worked with ARCA Series team owner Roger Carter and Tristar Motorsports before joining Wood Brothers Racing in 2017.

OFFICIAL NASCAR MEMBERS CLUB Q&A ■■ Bryan Platt brought his daughter to a race at Charlotte.

TEACHING HIS DAUGHTER THE NASCAR WAY BY DA N GUT TENPL A N

B

ryant Platt doesn’t hesitate when asked to share the greatest experience he’s gained from his membership in the Original NASCAR Members Club. “A couple of years ago, I got hot passes for a race at Charlotte,” Platt said. “My daughter was a big Danica Patrick fan, and we lucked out and got into her garage. The hot passes were incredible. It’s a bummer we can’t get them all of the time.” Platt, a high school teacher and college professor from Ellington, Conn., has been a NASCAR fan since his early teen years. He fell in love with Jeff Gordon’s Rainbow Warrior and has followed the sport ever since. He recently joined ROAR for a Q&A.

0 3 6

▶  WHAT DID YOU LOVE ABOUT THE RAINBOW WARRIOR? “I thought, ‘Wow, that is a cool looking car.’ He was always challenging Dale Sr. That’s when I became a fan of the sport.” ▶  WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO JOIN THE CLUB? “I became interested in the business aspect of the sport and the aerodynamics. I’m not a traditional fan, but I really like to take the garage tours.” ▶  HAVE YOU BEEN TO MANY RACES? “I went to my first race at Dover in 2004. I’ve been every year after that with the exception of a couple of years. I’ve been to Charlotte for both races a few years. It’s looking like I may go to the ROVAL this year.” ▶  WHO DO YOU ROOT FOR THESE DAYS? “I follow Chase Elliott. I’m just a Hendrick Motorsports guy. Once Chase moved to the 24 after Gordon, I could see the writing on the wall that Chase will go to the 9 and William Byron would take over the 24.”

THINGS WE LEARNED AT GATEWAY PICKUP THROWDOWN STYLE

HARRISON BURTON SNEAKS BY FOR GATEWAY VICTORY BURTON PREVAILS WHILE COMPETITION’S PATIENCE SET SAIL How often does the driver in the fourth spot on the final lap wind up crossing the stripe with the victory? Other than a short track or the superspeedway races, the odds of that happening are about as good as seeing Sunday school etiquettes observed in the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series. Ultimately, Harrison Burton, the fourth-place racer on the final lap of the Bommarito.com 100 at the virtual World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, snuck past the top-three for the victory. Now, here’s the five takeaways from the PUTD’s action-packed race! Go to www.wholesomehide.com for dealers

FRUSTRATION RUNS HIGH BETWEEN MOFFITT AND FERRUCCI

M

aybe some of our IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series racers needed some etiquette lessons from Dr. Frasier Crane. Sure, the good fictional TV psychiatrist properly put this to use at Café Nervosa with a surly customer, but hooey, tempers flared with some of racing’s top talents. Notably, on Lap 88, it wasn’t a matter of give and take between Brett Moffitt and Santino Ferrucci. Clearly, buttons were pushed, the tea kettle boiled, and chaos ensued at Turn 1 of the World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway. Moffitt was clearly fed up with Ferrucci and he plowed right into his truck, virtually destroying their machines. From there, the damage was done with Moffitt being placed in the iRacing sinbin while Ferrucci’s precarious points lead vanished just 13 laps from the finish. Virtual or real, does Gateway bring out the angst and anger for any racers competing in a Truck Series event?

WEATHERMAN AND VARGAS SHOWCASE THEIR TREMENDOUS TALENTS

t first glance, Kyle Weatherman’s 13th place result and Ryan Vargas’ 10th place finish wouldn’t appear to be results that would garner attention. However, these two were refreshing presences during Thursday night’s Bommarito.com 100, running well inside the top-10 for a majority of this race. Weatherman, who won the pole, might’ve only led one lap, but he was poised, patient, and had a Matt Kenseth-like approach in letting his truck do all the talking. Meanwhile, Vargas didn’t let a Lap 20 incident with Harrison Burton deter his drive. Instead, he kept at it, overcame setbacks in the race, and found himself in prime position for a sweet top-five finish. As Vargas later tweeted, “That got wild, P4 entering (Turn) 3, P10 at the line.” Ultimately, the beauty of the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series was on display with racers like Weatherman and Vargas showcasing their incredible talents at the virtual Gateway.

t’s clear that the Hill brothers have the iRacing gene. Timmy Hill, the dean of iRacing, and his younger brother, Tyler, clearly know how to mix it up at the front of the field in these IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series racers. While older brother Timmy won the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series championship, Tyler’s in a great position to potentially nab the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series title after logging his second straight top-five finish. Entering the penultimate race of this special virtual series, Hill ranked ninth in the points standings. Running in the lead with one to go, Hill saw victory snatched away from him in Turn 1 when he was the recipient of Anthony Alfredo’s bumper. However, he recovered and drove his way to a fifth-place result, boosting him to a two-way tie for fourth. More importantly, he’s only 11 markers from the new series points leader Harrison Burton.

THE OLD CHROME HORN DOESN’T ALWAYS WORK

hile losing your cool was clearly not the right strategy for a win at Gateway, the chrome horn didn’t exactly work out in the end for Anthony Alfredo. Coming to the final lap, Alfredo trailed Tyler Hill, seemingly waiting to take the number one spot. Utilizing the old “bump and run” tactic on Hill, instead of solely sending Hill “up the hill,” Alfredo accompanied him into the marbles of Turns 1 and 2. Needing time to woe their trucks, Hill managed to rally to a topfive while Alfredo dropped to 12th-place when all was said and done. Although Alfredo nearly played this tactic to perfection, it’s safe to say that he wasn’t thrilled about the Lap 88 caution when he tweeted, “I really, really wish the caution hadn’t came out at this moment.” It would’ve been a Hill versus Alfredo battle for the win. Instead, it’s a “what if” moment.

HARRISON BURTON EMERGES VICTORIOUS IN FINAL LAP

I

t’s good to be lucky. Then again, it’s better to be good and lucky. Harrison Burton, who started seventh, was lurking around the top-five for the majority of the Bommarito.com 100 like the T-1000 did with John Connor in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Unlike Robert Patrick’s menacing character, Burton prevailed, and he was overjoyed to be the winner at the virtual World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway. Entering the last lap in the fourth spot, Burton passed Kyle Weatherman and zipped past Anthony Alfredo and Tyler Hill to take the lead on the backstretch. In the words of Ken Squier, Burton was like “a bandit in the night.” After the race, the young NASCAR XFINITY Series star racer tweeted, “Definitely didn’t expect to win going into (Turn) 1 but that was pretty cool! I’ll take it.” Burton takes the win and the points lead into the season finale at Homestead.

ONE LAP TO GO

ONE LAP TO GO BY ROB TIONGSON If the Turns 1 and 2 virtual walls of the World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway could talk, they’d be clamoring over the incredible series of events that essentially decided Thursday night’s Bommarito.com 100. Tyler Hill seemed destined and poised for the win. Anthony Alfredo had a great plan in place to nab the victory while Kyle Weatherman had fresh tires. Instead, Alfredo, who attempted the bump and run on Hill, got into the marbles, with Weatherman gathering his truck. Harrison Burton went on the fast lane, scooting past the lead trio off Turn 2, and won in dramatic fashion.

n Friday, March 20, the CEO and founder of BuzzBallz, LLC/Southern Champion, Merrilee Kick, decided to adjust operations from solely cocktail production to add the creation of hand sanitizer, which would be donated to health care facilities, municipalities, and retail personnel in Texas. This decision was reached after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an emergency allowance for distillery owners to create hand sanitizer, which lifted customary limitations.

0 5 6

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: MAY 15, 2020

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT That day, Kick contacted the Vice President of Sourcing and Supply Chain Management at Texas Health Resources, Nate Mickish, to see if hand sanitizer was needed. “He said, ‘three out of their 14 hospitals were in dire need of hand sanitizer,’ so, I rallied our team...,” Kick said. “We also had a call from ProPath, which handles the pathology labs in North Texas.” After consulting the World Health Organization guidelines to create the formula and assembling a volunteer team of salaried employees, the company initially created and donated around 100 gallons of hand sanitizer to North Texas hospitals, local fire and police departments and US postal workers. Since March 21, the company has produced 18,000 gallons of hand sanitizer which has also been allocated to essential workers nationwide at Southern Glazers Wine & Spirits, American Airlines and Southwest Airlines, various grocery stores and Army bases in the US and Europe. The estimated value of the 18,000-gallon batch of hand sanitizer is more than $500,000.
