NASCAR IS OFFICIALLY BACK - HOW’D THEY DO? In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp is finally back with a real post-race review and analysis, for the first time since March, with real cars back on real tracks doing real racing. It’s quite the episode. The week’s racing turned out to be quite a competitive battle at Darlington, a surprise given so much time has passed since these drivers had been behind the wheel of a race car, 0 0 4

and because Darlington itself is known to be a uniquely punishing experience for even the best drivers. So how did the vehicles perform with so little preparation, at least compared to a typical race? And what were the major shake-ups since we last saw these drivers and teams? Eric has all the info, plus the return of the real Groovy Gauge, in this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

THINGS WE LEARNED AT DARLINGTON’S RETURN THE NEW NORM: MASKING AND DISTANCES NASCAR RETURNS TO DARLINGTON AFTER 2-PLUS MONTH LAYOFF After two months of life without NASCAR, the sport made its highly anticipated return on Sunday afternoon with a visit to one of its most fabled and notoriously difficult tracks — 1.366-mile Darlington Raceway in South Carolina. Dubbed The Real Heroes 400, this race wasn’t even part of the original 2020 NASCAR Cup Series schedule but was added to the calendar when Darlington proved to be a logical choice for NASCAR to make its comeback following a lengthy hiatus for the COVID-19 pandemic. Following are five key takeaways from Sunday’s race. BY JA RED TURNER

TWO ROOKIES SHOWED THEIR TREMENDOUS POTENTIAL
I
n the four races run this season prior to Sunday, no rookie had finished in the top 10. That changed at Darlington, where not one but two rookies — Tyler Reddick and John Hunter Nemechek — came home seventh and ninth, respectively. It was an all-around impressive performance for the two NASCAR Cup Series newcomers at a track that is widely considered NASCAR’s toughest to navigate and find success. “All in all, it was a great day,” said Reddick, a Richard Childress Racing driver who is the back-to-back and reigning NASCAR Xfinity Series champion. “A seventh-place finish is a great way to come back, and we’ll look to build momentum from here.” Nemechek — a second-generation driver who is the son of NASCAR veteran Joe Nemechek — was equally satisfied. “I’m very excited that we were able to come home P9,” the Front Row Motorsports driver said. “My entire No. 38 team and pit crew did an amazing job. Everybody executed all day with no mistakes.”

HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS DIDN’T MISS A BEAT
T
hough not evident in the final outcome, Hendrick Motorsports was superb from top to bottom at Darlington. Off to an impressive start to 2020 when the season was put on hold more than two months, the organization picked back up right where it left off in early March by bringing four super-fast cars to the track “Too Tough to Tame.” While Hendrick drivers Jimmie Johnson and William Byron were ultimately derailed by accidents, Hendrick still placed two drivers in the top five with Alex Bowman (finished second) and Chase Elliott (finished fourth). Bowman, for one, is really upbeat about the direction of the company. “It’s really different than how we started the season the last two years,” Bowman said. “I feel like our cars, the biggest thing is: When we’re off a little bit, we’re not running 20th anymore. If we have a bad run, we fall back to eighth. I think that shows a lot about the strength of HMS right now.”

EVEN LEGENDS ARE PRONE TO SCREW UP
L
ooking to snap by far the longest dry spell of his NASCAR career, Jimmie Johnson appeared to be well on his way to doing just that on Sunday at Darlington. Then came the final lap of the first stage. Leading the race and seeming all but assured of a rare stage win, Johnson saw his promising afternoon go south in a hurry when his No. 48 Chevrolet broke loose and smacked the inside wall after running up on the slower car of Chris Buescher. Johnson, who was trying to put Buescher a lap down, essentially wrecked himself when he ran into Buescher’s bumper and went sliding out of control. Just as one might expect from a seven-time champion, Johnson accepted responsibility for his misfortune. “Gosh, what I would do to get that corner back to do it over again,” he said. “Things just went horribly wrong there. What a great car. I feel terrible for my team and everybody at Hendrick Motorsports.”

NEWMAN AND KENSETH HAD NO TROUBLE KNOCKING RUST OFF
M
aking his first start since coming out of retirement to take over the No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, Matt Kenseth finished an impressive 10th on Sunday at Darlington. Five spots behind him at the finish but likewise on the lead lap was Ryan Newman, who was making his return to competition after suffering a brain bruise in a harrowing accident on the final lap of February’s Daytona 500. While neither Kenseth nor Newman was in serious contention for the win, it was a solid return for both of the veteran drivers. “The first few laps today were kind of nerveracking, but then it was sort of back to racing and thinking about what we needed to be better,” Kenseth said. “Everyone on the team has worked extremely hard the last couple weeks to prepare for today, and I’m proud of what we accomplished today. I learned a lot throughout the race about the way the car handles and reacts to different situations.”

THIS WASN’T JUST ANOTHER WIN FOR KEVIN HARVICK
B
y virtue of winning on Sunday at Darlington, Kevin Harvick reached a significant career milestone — victory No. 50 in NASCAR’s premier series. Harvick, who joined NASCAR’s top division full time in 2001 a week after the untimely death of Dale Earnhardt, spent his first 13 seasons at the sport’s highest level with Richard Childress Racing where he competed for Earnhardt’s old team. In 2014, Harvick joined Stewart-Haas Racing where he captured his first premier series championship that November. Over half of his premier series victories have come with SHR despite having raced for RCR more than twice as long. “I’ve been fortunate, especially since I’ve come to Stewart-Haas Racing,” Harvick said. “This was 27 wins together with this group of guys.” Harvick tied NASCAR Hall of Famers Junior Johnson and Ned Jarrett as a 50-time winner. “It’s just an honor to have your name next to them,” Harvick said. “It’s a little bit surreal, I guess you’d say.”

RACING WITH NO FANS WAS SURREAL
From the absence of all fans, dignitaries and drivers’ families to the presence of masks on the faces of every driver and crew member assembled on Sunday at Darlington Raceway, NASCAR’s return to racing on the heels of a two-month hiatus for the COVID-19 pandemic was more surreal than satisfying. As great as it was and is for NASCAR to be one of the sports that is leading the way in the quest to help life to return to normal, you didn’t have to be tuned into Sunday’s broadcast for more than about 30 seconds to realize this wasn’t a normal race. Not even close. JA RED TURNER
■■ NASCAR’s return with no fans was surreal.
▶ KUDOS TO HARVICK, FOX FOR MAKING MOST OF CIRCUMSTANCES The old adage goes like this: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” That’s precisely what both race winner Kevin Harvick and the FOX NASCAR team did on Sunday at Darlington. Instead of foregoing a traditional post-race victory celebration, Harvick performed multiple burnouts in his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford — this despite no fans being in attendance to witness it in person. The FOX team, meanwhile, did everything a network could have possibly done to deliver a business-as-usual kind of broadcast, even though the surroundings suggested something much different.
■■ Kyle Busch honored Heather Pleasant on his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.
▶ TRIBUTE TO HEALTHCARE WORKERS WAS DESERVED Through a collaboration with NASCAR, FOX Sports and the race teams, each driver’s name was replaced above his driver-side window with the name of an individual healthcare worker currently battling the coronavirus pandemic. The featured healthcare workers, who represented cities from around the country, also served as grand marshals for the race — appropriately dubbed “The Real Heroes 400” — and appeared in an on-air mosaic that simultaneously gave the command for drivers to start their engines. Both NASCAR and FOX Sports should be commended for using Sunday’s event as a platform to bestow honor on a particularly deserving population.

NASCAR (AND RUSTY WALRUS) RETURNS AT DARLINGTON This week, popular YouTuber and streamer Rusty Walrus is back outside in his car for another fast reaction to the weekend’s race, and it sure has been quite a while since we’ve had one of these race reviews from Rusty. Now that NASCAR is back, he’s got a lot to say! The hype for the return to Darlington was enormous, and Rusty takes us through the emotional roller coaster of watching the return 0 2 0
live, seeing the empty grandstands and infield, and the return of the roar of the engines around Darlington. But beyond the excitement of racing returning, what about the actual race itself? What kind of action did Darlington deliver after so much time for the drivers? Check out Rusty’s review and find out what he has to say about NASCAR’s comeback!

ROOKIE ROUNDUP
ROOKIE ROUNDUP Tyler Reddick trending in right direction
BY ROB TIONGSON
Life in the NASCAR Cup Series can have its ups and downs as a fresh rookie working to make a name for themselves. Today, Tyler Reddick talks about his freshman efforts as he prepares for NASCAR’s return. ▶ WHAT’S YOUR INITIAL THOUGHT FOR THESE RACES AT DARLINGTON? It’s two totally different challenges. We’ve gone through a lot of changes in pace over the last couple of months. The first one was getting used to self-isolation life and being back at home, wondering when things would go back to normal. And then, boom, we’re thrown back into jumping into the cars and being back on the track for the first time in 10 weeks. It was a shock to have racing taken away, and it’s going to be a shock to have it back at Darlington. ▶ CATERPILLAR HAS A NEAT “THANK YOU” CAMPAIGN FOR THOSE WORKING IN THE FRONTLINE DURING THE PANDEMIC. HOW SPECIAL IS IT TO HAVE THIS INITIATIVE AND HONOR THESE INDIVIDUALS AND YOUR FRIENDS? It’s just cool. Whenever you travel down the highway, there’s one thing you always see wherever you go and that’s semi-truck drivers taking and delivering goods to different distributors. There’s men and women working around the clock to keep the supply lines going for different companies, big and small. It’s cool that they’ll give gift bags to some of the truckers across the country with goodies from Alsco and TaxSlayer. Caterpillar wanted to say thank you and we’re excited to be a part of that and helping push the word around that we appreciate all the work that everyone is doing from all the truck drivers, frontline workers, first responders – these are challenging and scary times. But it’s cool that we get to put that in our car and hopefully bring more exposure around it.

▶ It was truly a tough moment to see Jimmie Johnson wreck from the lead on Lap 90, the final circuit of Stage 1 of Sunday’s Real Heroes 400 at Darlington Raceway. To his credit, Johnson took ownership of his backstretch crash. He’s got Wednesday night’s race to consider and he is a man on a mission along with his hardy No. 48 team. Surely, it’s a dangerous prospect knowing how tough his No. 48 team will be on Wednesday night. 0 2 6

▶ Absolutely, it was incredible to see race cars back on the track. NASCAR Hall of Fame racer Mark Martin expressed this sentiment on Twitter just as the Real Heroes 400 at Darlington Raceway was about to get the green flag. Hopefully, with Sunday’s race appearing as smooth as possible in terms of the temporary new normal, we can build upon this moment before we return together on the track. For now, we can enjoy these races from the comfort of home.

▶ FOX NASCAR’s Regan Smith was the true MVP on the track for the TV side. After his epic run at Fontana, the fact he was the eyes and ears for Mike Joy and Jeff Gordon at Darlington, mostly on his own, kudos to the man known as the “super sub!”
▶ If there has to be a caption for this honorary tweet of the week, let me put it in the simplest words. Ken Squier narrating a clip about the return of NASCAR is like hearing the voice of John Facenda in the NFL Films documentaries. Seriously, it’s amazing and inspirational!
▶ When you get NFL Network’s Rich Eisen’s attention, it’s got to be a good thing. Sunday’s Real Heroes 400 may go down in NASCAR history as one of the most important moments in terms of leading the way towards a slow return to normalcy. Isn’t this what makes sports great?

SEEING THE RACE THREAD BACK ON REDDIT NASCAR’S PAGE WAS LIKE KNOWING IT WAS the first day of school amongst friends and even frenemies. While some fans were disappointed to see Kevin Harvick win after the 10-week hiatus, let’s face it. It is amazing to even have racing back again. One of the wonderful moments during the hiatus was the rise of eNASCAR. Now, it’s just incredible to have the on-track product back and at a track that defines NASCAR.

CHASE BRISCOE, A FAVORITE OF REDDIT NASCAR NATION, ASKED FANS WHAT THEY looked forward to most about Sunday’s race. Most were excited about seeing their favorite racers return on-track while most pointed out the simple sound of the engines of the cars. When there’s been 70 days since the last NASCAR Cup Series race, it makes it delightful to appreciate a particular experience that sometimes gets taken for granted during normal times. THE GREAT AMERICAN RACE AT THE SEASON-OPENING DAYTONA 500 IN 2007, HARVICK claimed his first NASCAR Cup Series victory in a restrictor plate race with a dramatic final lap pass over Mark Martin by .020 seconds in a green-white-checkered finish, the closest margin at the 500 since electronic scoring started in 1993. The race was on the sixth anniversary of the death of Dale Earnhardt.

FAIR OR FOUL?
AT THE AARON’S 499 IN 2010, KEVIN HARVICK executed a crazy Lap 200 (third green-white-checker finish situation) pass of Jamie McMurray that was the 88th lead change of the race, setting a new NASCAR record. It was speculated by McMurray’s team owner Felix Sabates that Harvick was below the yellow line when he made the pass, but this was denied by NASCAR at the track.
