Justin Haley Catches Lightning In a Bottle
I
n this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us his reaction to the Coke Zero Sugar 400 race at Daytona. Or more accurately, his reaction to the non-race at Daytona. That’s an exaggeration, there was a race that took place despite the seemingly non-stop weather delays. The biggest story was the upset pulled off by Justin Haley, who took home the checkered flag after the race was called early. But even with the abbreviated schedule, Daytona still had time to cause trouble.

Keselowski and more got into it, and it ended poorly for some. This was the measure of the race, it seemed, as even the weather couldn’t stop the drivers from battling and showing off great racing. But the big story was Justin Haley’s victory by decision. Haley now joins some 192 other drivers as winners in the Monster Energy Cup Series, an exclusive club, and one you get into any way you possibly can. So how did the summer Daytona race stack up on Eric’s patented Groovy Gauge? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

Superspeedway Racing Has Become An All-Out Manufacturer War
M
uch like the spring race at Talladega, Sunday’s race at Daytona turned out to be an event where the battle lines were clearly drawn between the three manufacturers that compete in NASCAR’s premier series. For the second time in as many superspeedway races, Chevrolets, Fords and Toyotas chose to stick together and provide drafting help almost exclusively to their own kind. Drivers from the different camps left Daytona mostly pleased with how the plans unfolded. “It’s been working well,” said Chevy driver Jimmie Johnson, who finished third. “We are still learning how to use each other in the right way and protect as many lanes as possible. I think, in general, I netted a better finish as a result of working closely with my Chevrolet teammates.” Said Ford driver Ryan Blaney: “You see it out there all day with manufacturers working together and snookering each other left and right. That’s kind of how it is nowadays.”

Brad Keselowski Is Cool With Kevin Harvick
O
ne of the more surprising moments of the race at Daytona came when veterans and former champions Kevin Harvick and Brad Keselowski came together and Keselowski wrecked after the two had been drafting nose-to-tail near the front of the field. A bump like the one Harvick gave Keselowski on the straightaway typically wouldn’t cause a driver — particularly one of Keselowski’s caliber — to lose control and wreck. But that’s exactly what happened. Harvick, meanwhile, suffered damage to his car as well. “I know we got to three-wide at the top of Turn 3, and it looks like Kevin gave me a real straight push,” Keselowski said. “I don’t know. It just took off on me. The Fords were working really hard to run together, and … I thought we were doing really good at it, but for whatever reason, the car just instantly turned there. It’s a bummer for everybody, but we’ll move on.”

The Hendrick Motorsports Uptick Continues
A
week after Hendrick Motorsports driver Alex Bowman scored career win No. 1 at Chicagoland and was joined in the top five by fourth-place finishing teammate Jimmie Johnson, the Hendrick cars of William Byron and Johnson finished second and third, respectively, at Daytona. Byron, who earned his best career finish, did so in a backup car after being wrecked by Brad Keselowski in practice. “Our team did a great job this week managing all the chaos, and finishing second with a backup car is pretty good,” Byron said. “Overall, it was a good race for us.” Johnson, who prior to Chicagoland had scored just one top-five finish in 16 starts this season, has now recorded back-to-back top-fives for the first time since April 2017. It’s looking more and more like Johnson and Hendrick Motorsports as a whole have turned a corner. “I think we’re really starting to hit our stride as a group now,” Johnson said.

Clint Bowyer Is Miffed At Austin Dillon
T
he biggest accident of the day at Daytona came past the halfway point when Clint Bowyer and Austin Dillon tangled while jockeying for position at the front of the pack. The contact, which took place when Bowyer moved to Dillon’s inside and Dillon appeared to move down to block, eliminated both drivers and a host of other fast cars from contention. Bowyer, speaking moments after emerging from his badly-damaged vehicle, took umbrage with Dillon’s aggressive maneuver. “I guess he didn’t want me to pass him,” Bowyer said. “I don’t know. I got under him and he blocked, and we got together. I got off of him — moved down and got off of him — and here he comes back down even more and just finally wrecked us all. … What do you do? That was terrible. You want to be (upset), frustrated and blame somebody, but at the end of the day, it’s just part of racing.”

Justin Haley Is NASCAR’s Real “Lucky Dog”
T
here’s an old, familiar adage in racing that says it’s better to be lucky than good. That’s never been truer than it was for Justin Haley on Sunday at Daytona International Speedway. Making just his third career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series start and competing for little-known, low-budget Spire Motorsports, Haley did the unthinkable by being declared the winner at Daytona when heavy, persistent rain forced NASCAR to call the race official with 33 laps remaining and Haley’s No. 77 Chevrolet sitting P1 on the leaderboard. Haley, a full-time Xfinity Series driver making only select Cup starts this season, was 27th in the running order before his team took a big gamble by electing not to pit on sequence with the rest of the lead-lap cars as rain and lightning moved closer to the Daytona Beach area. With NASCAR ultimately unable to restart the race, 20-year-old Haley became arguably the most unheralded race winner in the sport’s history.

Justin Haley’s Daytona Win Will Forever Have An Asterisk By Jared Turner
D
id that really just happen? Did a 20-year-old, virtually unknown driver making his third career start for a back-marker, first-year team really just win a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway — the undisputed Mecca of stockcar racing? Surely, this must be a dream. Or, for NASCAR, more like a nightmare. Or maybe we’ve all now officially moved to an alternate universe. Regardless of how anyone views the events that transpired on Sunday afternoon, the entire NASCAR world can at least agree that no one this side of Mars could have ever in a million years predicted an outcome this insane. The question, though, is whether this shocking turnabout was good or bad for the sport. Had Haley won the race under even remotely normal conditions, you’d be hard-pressed to find a soul anywhere who felt anything less than thrilled for the young driver. After all, what is better in this life than the classic underdogbeats-all-odds story? Not much. But what Haley did on Sunday just didn’t feel exactly right, even to the most casual observer who knows little about how NASCAR

actually works. The manner in which Haley “won” went far beyond luck — it was bordering on voodoo. As much as I hate to discredit Haley, any fair-minded person who watched that race had to walk away feeling sorely unsatisfied. Especially when you consider that Haley was running 27th and no one knew he was even there, prior to the unusual set of circumstances that led to him sitting P1 on the leaderboard when NASCAR called the race official 33 laps shy of the scheduled distance. Still, Haley left Daytona with the trophy. His name will forever be etched in history as the winner of the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway on July 7, 2019. But those of us who watched know the real story.

And this week’s race, with rain, thunder, and hardcore on-track battling, left Rusty with plenty to react to. Rusty recalls back to earlier in the season at Talladega as a preview of this weekend’s racing, and talks about how Daytona stacked up against the other plate races, or “plate races” given the new 2019 aero package for

super speedways. Early on the racing might have appeared as less than spectacular, owing to the heavy involvement of the manufacturers. They micromanaged the first stage, apparently, leading to almost every car running the same strategy. But we also have the exceedingly rare occasion of a brand new winner in the Cup Series, none other than truck series and Xfinity veteran Justin Haley. Find out Rusty’s reaction to this and more in this week’s episode!

NASCAR eSports allowed and who is allowed to join. Both of these types of sessions allow for just about anything you’d want to do. Want to race with friends? Host a session! Want to join a preexisting group of iRacers? Join a league! These are perfect outlets when official racing isn’t going your way, and you just want to have fun. Drive IndyCars around Bristol, Cup cars around the Kansas Roval, or Street Stocks around Watkins Glen. The possibilities, realistic and not-so-realistic, are truly endless. So when you hear about iRacing being used as a tool for professionals, take it with a grain of salt, because that’s not all it’s for. At the end
of the day, iRacing was released to the public so that you and I, average Joes with a racing wheel, could get about as close as we could get to the thrill of driving around Talladega at 200+ MPH, or whizz around Bristol in 15 seconds (or maybe 20, if you’re like me). The experience is supposed to be fun, but sometimes it can make you want to pull your hair out. If your frustration is building over official races, think about what led you to iRacing, and gather some friends for a race around anything from Atlanta to Talladega in any car you can imagine.

For Dr. Cormier’s most recent side project, he co-authored an autobiography – with the help of acclaimed author Clifton Lambreth. The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things. “I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. People were pushing me to share my life experiences because there are many others currently suffering through some of the same things. My hope is that people might draw from

this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.” Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal
health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about
his past unearthed some feelings that he’d compartmentalized for years. “You don’t really know how your parents’ divorce resonates deep inside you,” Cormier said. “In self-reflection, I don’t think I ever dealt with that correctly. I recall a lot of yelling and screaming in front of us, in addition to physical abuse. That became somewhat of the norm. I kept it hidden and tucked away. I have come to realize that this really wasn’t my fault. Hopefully this helps with issues that others currently deal with – like relationships and friendships. This is what I’ve come through. Things could always be so much worse.”
The Man Behind the Book Dr. Jason Cormier teaches both medical students and residents many innovative neurosurgical techniques including endoscopic pituitary and image-guided surgery, and minimally invasive complex spinal surgery.
