Hailie Deegan Talks Growing Up Racing, Future Plans, and More!

I

n this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp sits down with a very special guest - none other than one of the most formidable drivers coming up the ranks, Hailie Deegan. My editor would probably kill me if I just listed out every single accomplishment in her shockingly brief career so far, so here’s just one - out of six scheduled races she’s running this year in the ARCA Menard’s series, she already has three wins. How’s your favorite driver’s 2019 look so far?

Hailie’s conversation with Eric covers the gamut of her career, from how she got started racing to what her future plans are in professional stock car racing. She also makes a bit of her own news. Hailie is a fixture of the online community, so yes, she saw that Adam Stern Tweet. And yes, she knows what you thought about her dust up with Kraus in Colorado. What does she have to say about all that? Watch the episode and find out!

The Beginning Of Life After Restrictor Plates At Daytona

F

or the first time in 32 years, NASCAR’s premier series is set to compete at Daytona without horsepower-robbing restrictor plates. Instead, the cars will feature a smaller tapered spacer and increased aerodynamic downforce. The cumulative effect of the smaller spacer, larger spoilers and splitters, and the new 2019 aero ducts, is expected to reduce horsepower and increase drag to replicate the traditional brand of close-quarters, big-pack racing seen over the past three-plus decades at Daytona. This familiar style of racing is especially likely if Saturday night’s race plays out anything like the April race at Talladega — where NASCAR’s top series likewise competed without restrictor plates for the first time in more than 30 years. Of course, it’s also possible that the field will end up more strung out than is typical for Daytona. The only guarantee is that restrictor plates, used for the final time at the 2019 Daytona 500, are no longer part of the equation.

The Dreaded — And Often Unavoidable — “Big One”

W

ith every trip to Daytona, every driver rightfully fears getting caught up in “The Big One,” which is the nickname long ago given to the supersized and oftentimes downright sensational multicar wrecks that are so prevalent at The World Center of Racing and at Talladega, NASCAR’s other high-banked superspeedway. Under the right circumstances (or perhaps, more literally, the wrong circumstances), “The Big One” is prone to wipe out as much as half of the field or more and send cars flying airborne. Perhaps the worst part of “The Big One” is that there’s almost nothing that anyone can do to avoid it. About the only way to guarantee missing a big multi-car crash at Daytona is choosing to run at the back of the pack, behind everyone. That strategy carries a risk, however, because deliberately dropping to the rear can cause a driver to lose the draft — and with it, any chance of going to Victory Lane.

A “Surprise” Winner

R

emember last summer’s race at Daytona when second-year Monster Energy Series driver Erik Jones seemingly came out of nowhere to lead only the final lap and score his first career victory in NASCAR’s top division? Jones benefitted tremendously from a high attrition rate, as more than half of the field was eliminated in accidents. Expect this time around to be no different, once again setting the stage for a surprise winner — or even a first-time winner — to emerge. Don’t have the fastest car? No need to worry. Just steer clear of the wrecks, and there’s a pretty good chance you will end up at or near the front of the field. At Daytona, more so than at any other track other than perhaps Talladega, it’s rare for the best car or even the most talented driver to end up in Victory Lane. So, in a sense, having a surprise winner really isn’t that surprising at all.

A Suspense-Filled Final Few Laps

W

hen was the last time a race at Daytona didn’t end with lots of drivers running in a tight pack at the front of the field and aggressively jockeying for the lead? Even with a new rules package, Saturday night’s race should play out in predictable fashion for The World Center of Racing. Unlike at most tracks, where it’s often clear from the opening laps who’s going to contend for the win, a driver can seemingly come out of nowhere in the final laps at Daytona if he gets hooked up with the right drafting partner. With drivers running three- or four-wide in one or more tight packs, the margin of victory at Daytona tends to be ultra-thin — sometimes even a matter of inches and requiring a replay to see who beat who to the finish. Just ask Martin Truex Jr., who lost the 2016 Daytona 500 to Denny Hamlin by one-hundredth of a second.

Another Team Penske/Joe Gibbs Racing Battle

E

ven with all the unpredictability and uncertainty that racing at Daytona always brings, there’s a pretty good chance that the sport’s two leading organizations — Joe Gibbs Racing and Team Penske — will ultimately end up fighting it out for the win on Saturday night. JGR drivers have won the last two races at Daytona, with Denny Hamlin capturing the 2019 Daytona 500 and teammate Erik Jones scoring a surprise victory one year ago on the 2.5-mile high banks. And, of course, it would be foolish to forget about JGR’s Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr., who have combined for eight wins this year and both know their way to the front at Daytona. Team Penske drivers Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski have both won at Daytona in recent years and together have posed the biggest threat to JGR this season. No one will be stunned if that trend continues this weekend.

▶▶ Denny Hamlin. Denny Hamlin won February’s Daytona 500, making it two wins for him in the past four installments of The Great American Race. Can Hamlin complete the 2019 Daytona sweep on Saturday night? Unequivocally, yes. Will he? History suggests he will have his work cut out for him.

drivers to watch at daytona

▶▶ Chase Elliott. With a victory at Talladega in late April, Chase Elliott went to Victory Lane for the first time at a superspeedway. The Hendrick Motorsports driver now looks to make it back-to-back superspeedway wins by triumphing at Daytona — a track where he has three poles in seven qualifying attempts. ▶▶ Erik Jones. One year ago at Daytona, Erik Jones scored his first win as a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver. This weekend, the second-year Joe Gibbs Racing driver will aim to notch his second career Cup triumph with a return trip to Victory Lane at The World Center of Racing. ▶▶ Martin Truex Jr. He’s been close — like one-hundredth of a second close at the 2016 Daytona 500 — but Martin Truex Jr. has never won a points-paying race at Daytona. The 2017 Monster Energy Series champ obviously hopes to break through this weekend, when he’ll be seeking a series-high fifth win of the season. ▶▶ Alex Bowman. Still riding the wave of his thrilling first career Monster Energy Series victory last weekend at Chicagoland, Alex Bowman will try to maintain his hot hand this weekend at Daytona while driving the iconic No. 88 car that his predecessor — Dale Earnhardt Jr. — took to Victory Lane in two points races and numerous exhibition races at the high-banked trioval.

Keselowski Dominates at Daytona Former Series Champion Collects 100th Cup Victory for Team Penske By Ben white

O

n July 2, 2016, Brad Keselowski, driver of the Team Penske No. 2 Ford, put together a dominant performance to win the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway and the 100th Cup series victory for team owner Roger Penske. Keselowski led 115 of 161 laps to collect his first-career win on the 2.5-mile track. The Michigan native sealed the deal by holding off strong late-race challenges from brothers Kyle and Kurt Busch, drivers for Joe Gibbs Racing and Stewart-Haas Racing. At the checkered flag, Kurt Busch spun after contact with Keselowski’s teammate Joey Logano and finished 23rd. A 22-car crash knocked out or damaged several expected

contenders, including Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth. Jamie McMurray triggered the multi-car crash when he got loose while running in a pack of cars and made contact with Ganassi Racing teammate Kyle Larson. All told, five cautions slowed the race for 28 laps. “The wins are never easy to come by, and I think this one means a lot to me for sure because looking at our past here, it hasn’t been all that rosy,” Keselowski said. “I was telling Roger Penske when I was in victory lane and the fireworks were going off, usually I’m loading up the car and about to be to the airport, so it’s nice to be here and have a great finish.”

He was named the series’ most popular driver in 2015 and now has six Truck Series victories. Nemechek graduated to the NASCAR Xfinity Series a year ago, making 18 starts for Chip Ganassi Racing, and won the fall race at Kansas Speedway. This year, the secondgeneration driver is running for the full NASCAR Xfinity Series schedule for GMS Racing.

Born June 11, 1997, Nemechek is the son of Joe Nemechek, who has made more than 1,160 starts across NASCAR’s three national series since 1989 and is a four-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race winner. The younger Nemechek dove into the family business at age 5, riding dirt bikes and competing in go-karts and Quarter Midgets. He eventually advanced to the Allison Legacy Series, where he claimed the series title in 2012. Nemechek added Late Model racing to his schedule that same year and immediately earned praise for his speed and car control. He continued to hone his skills at short tracks across the country and won the prestigious Snowball Derby at Florida’s Five Flags Speedway when he was 17. J

ordan Anderson is a man of the people. He’s one of the most honest and outgoing people in the garage. But the driver and owner of the No. 3 truck wants to build his program, and he’s determined to get the job done.

▶▶ What’s been helping this team perform better? “I think the biggest thing is the Ilmor motor package. I’ve been a big fan of this program since they announced it. It helped my team get off the ground last year, and it’s allowed us to get better this year. We have three Ilmor motors – two rebuilt from last season and one we purchased this year. That’s the only way we can survive.” 0 3 2

▶▶ What are your goals moving forward? “We’re still way behind on the size of our budget, but the goal is to grow. If we moved up to the XFINITY Series with our budget, we’d run 20th to 30th every week. The Truck Series is where my home is. Down the road, I’d be grateful to move up, but I want to see this team grow first.”

otorsports Safety Group is a collaboration of innovators in the sport who are determined to improve the safety of racing. MSG shares tips for race car drivers to help avoid injuries during races and practice sessions. Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. For Dr. Cormier’s most recent side project, he co-authored an autobiography – with the help of acclaimed author Clifton Lambreth. The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things. “I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. People were pushing me to share my life experiences because there are many others currently suffering through some of the same things. My hope is that people might draw from

this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.” Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal

health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about

his past unearthed some feelings that he’d compartmentalized for years. “You don’t really know how your parents’ divorce resonates deep inside you,” Cormier said. “In self-reflection, I don’t think I ever dealt with that correctly. I recall a lot of yelling and screaming in front of us, in addition to physical abuse. That became somewhat of the norm. I kept it hidden and tucked away. NASCAR PETS

Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Jared Turner

L

ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want

0 5 0

Daytona Preview: July 3, 2019

to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”
