THINGS WE LEARNED AT TEXAS (PICKUP THROWDOWN STYLE) To be successful as a driver in NASCAR requires a lot of talent and driving ability. Being successful as a team owner demands tremendous leadership skills and a knack for finding and hiring quality drivers and team personnel. Few people have managed to excel in both the driving and team ownership arenas, but the ones who have excelled at both have left quite the mark on the sport. Following are the five drivers who have found the most success as team owners over the course of the past two decades. BY ROB TIONGSON

irstly, Happy Birthday, Hermie Sadler! Before turning 52, the pride of Emporia, Va. entered Thursday night’s Gen-Y Hitch 100 at the virtual Texas Motor Speedway. As the most experienced on-track NASCAR driver in the field, it’s no surprise that Sadler knew when to drop the hammer and when to bide his time during this 105-lap race. Ultimately, Sadler found himself restarting in ninth in the race’s only Green-White-Checkered restart and he placed a solid eighth in his No. 02 Chevy. While Sadler may be an iRacing rookie, he outlasted some of the best virtual drivers with a calm, calculated race that was likened to a runner who sprinted towards the final stretch of a marathon. The former FOX NASCAR pit reporter and XFINITY Series veteran showcased a bit of Indiana Jones-like strategy. Let’s just make sure he doesn’t have to run from a boulder in his next virtual race.

FERRUCCI PUTS VERSATILE IRACING SKILLS ON DISPLAY
antino Ferrucci went from the comfort of his open wheel life to the world of NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck racing for the Pickup Throwdown’s kickoff event at Texas. Honestly, if anyone predicted that the Connecticut native would likely score a top-10 finish and mix it up with some of NASCAR’s leading Truck racers at a tough Texas speed arena, it’d be like predicting that Tom Brady would leave the New England Patriots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Oh wait, that happened. And, so did Ferrucci’s sixth place finish in his virtual Truck debut, at least in this special series. OK, so he did tangle with Austin Hill on Lap 99 in Turn 2. However, he held his own, particularly when he first took the race lead on Lap 42. It’ll be interesting to see if Ferrucci duplicates his Texas showing when the series heads to virtual Kansas Speedway.

TENACIOUS TEXAS GOBBLES UP SEVERAL TRUCK FAVORITES
henever Ty Majeski is in any NASCAR race, on-track or virtually, he’s always a threat for Victory Lane. For the early portion of the Gen-Y Hitch 100, Majeski looked like a virtual lock for the win at Texas. However, Lady Luck left Majeski on Lap 34 when he was pinned into the Turn 3 wall. Just 15 laps later, Majeski’s race was over when he was collected in a grinding Turn 1 crash that involved Tommy Joe Martins, Tyler Ankrum, and Stefan Parsons. In Martins’ case, it was truly a case of bad luck when his wheel stopped working which caused his throttle to freeze wide open. While Martins owned up to the Turn 1 fracas, there were other violent virtual crashes like Tyler Hill’s on Lap 12 on the frontstretch, Brennan Poole’s backstretch ride on Lap 91, and Austin Hill’s wild wreck on Lap 99 in Turn 2.

HARRISON BURTON EARNS HARD FOUGHT RUNNER-UP
ho here remembers Mike Skinner’s 1997 Daytona 500 performance? Well, let’s just say that Skinner knew what bullet timing was before Neo did in The Matrix in 1999. Perhaps Harrison Burton is “The One” when it comes to the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series. There were at least two instances in which Burton narrowly escaped some harrowing wrecks at Texas Motor Speedway. Keeping composed during those heart stopping moments, it’s safe to say that Burton truly earned his $100.00 runner-up prize following the Gen-Y Hitch 100. When it seemed like Burton would get swept up in the big wrecks, his green Toyota Tundra emerged from the scene like Cole Trickle off Turn 4 in the Daytona 500. If his former Truck Series owner’s nickname is “Rowdy,” someone ought to nickname Mr. Burton as “Cole” because he was like Tom Cruise by essentially making all the right moves in Thursday night’s race.

9-year-old Christian Eckes raced like a Truck Series veteran at Texas Motor Speedway. Sure, he had plenty of chances to push the envelope when his No. 18 Toyota had the preferred line in various points of the Gen-Y Hitch 100. Instead, Eckes was patient, smooth, and efficient. The Middletown, NY native channeled some positive energy from his rough start to the 2020 NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series season by leaping to the lead on Lap 96. Certainly, the man that Eckes passed for the win was perhaps the one driver that competitors would not want to see in their tailgates in the final laps. Taking the lead and win from Chase Briscoe, Eckes netted $500 as he sets his sights on winning the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series championship. Along with a potential title, Eckes may gain confidence when he and his Truck competitors make their eventual on-track return.

ONE LAP TO GO
ONE LAP TO GO BY ROB TIONGSON It shouldn’t be surprising, but when Christian Eckes passed Chase Briscoe for the lead on Lap 96, not only was it for the win, but it was a testament to Eckes’ brilliant patience in the closing moments of the Gen-Y Hitch 100. While the IceBox Pickup Throwdown’s kickoff race’s short distance may have given the illusion to execute daring moves in the early going, Eckes knew when to show his best hand at the Texas Hold ‘Em Poker table. While Eckes won $500, his winning pass was as clean and smooth as it gets in any form of NASCAR racing.

RECAPPING JIMMIE JOHNSON’S NASCAR CAREER
■■ Rick Hendrick and Jimmie Johnson celebrate the historic win at Darlington in 2012.
JJ’S SOUTHERN 500 VICTORY DOUBLES AS HENDRICK’S 200TH BY JA RED TURNER
M
ost of Jimmie Johnson’s 83 wins as a NASCAR Cup Series driver will be remembered for personal achievement or at least the achievement of the driver and his No. 48 team. But when Johnson scored a victory in the Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway on May 12, 2012, it wasn’t about him or his No. 48 team in particular. No, this win and this night were all about Hendrick Motorsports and team owner Rick Hendrick, who — thanks in large part to Johnson’s efforts — celebrated its milestone 200th victory in NASCAR’s premier series. Johnson, who won for the 56th time in his career and for the third time at Darlington, took the checkered flag .781 seconds ahead of second-place Denny Hamlin. “My mind goes back to the early days of Hendrick Motorsports, the people that won the early races, worked on the early cars, helped Rick build Hendrick Motorsports to what it is today,” Johnson said after elevating the organization to the double century mark for premier series wins. “So happy for Rick, his dedication to the sport, the performance.” The organization, which Rick Hendrick originally founded as All

Star Racing in 1984, has fielded cars for some of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history. Among them are Johnson — a seven-time premier series champion — four-time champion Jeff Gordon, three-time champion Darrell Waltrip and two-time champion Terry Labonte. Hendrick Motorsports owns a record 12 premier series championships, which include all seven of Johnson’s titles. Johnson’s victory at Darlington snapped an unusual dry spell for the organization, which had been sitting on 199 wins since the previous October. “I mean, we had oil pump issues, we’ve had cut tires,” Rick Hendrick said. “I mean, just things that were out of our control. Then cautions coming after you’ve dominated the race. It just looked like that we were stuck.” Until Johnson showed up at Darlington and got the 199 monkey off his team owner’s back.

Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson will interview various drivers in NASCAR. This week, he talks with Jordan Anderson, driver of the No. 3 K-Seal/Bommarito Automotive Group Chevrolet Silverado. ▶ LIONEL RACING WILL OFFER A DIE-CAST REPLICA OF YOUR NO. 3 CHEVY SILVERADO. HOW EXCITED ARE YOU ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY? Oh man, it’s cool. They’ve given us confirmation that the 1:24 scale truck is going into production. I’m as much of a race fan as I am a team owner and driver. And as a kid, I fell in love with the sport playing with the 1:64 and 1:24 scale diecasts in my room and outside in the dirt. I never could imagine that I would have one of my own and have it come from a race that was special and to have a Raced Version is cool. We had K-Seal in their first race with us along with Bommarito.com, two big partners of ours that made that race weekend happen. We did a Zoom conference call with Grant Enfinger and I told him, “Be glad that you won that race because I think I’ve run that finish through my head over a million times on what I could’ve done differently.” ▶ THE ICEBOX PICKUP THROWDOWN SERIES ALLOWS DRIVERS LIKE YOU TO SPOTLIGHT YOUR PARTNERS. WILL WE SEE YOUR FAMILIAR PAINT SCHEME IN THIS SERIES? We’ll have a lot of our partners on there. Bommarito and K-Seal will be back on the truck. We’ll debut a couple of different paint schemes as the series goes on. That’s exactly what we wanted the series to be about. Our team will represent and promote our partners and we wanted to allow other teams to have the same opportunities. It’ll be cool to get 007’s paint scheme riding again and to see it come to life in iRacing.

A CLUB MEMBERSHIP THAT SPARKED A FRIENDSHIP WITH CARL EDWARDS BY DA N GUT TENPL A N
Greg Lee, 62, is a longtime of the Original NASCAR Members Club. Through his affiliation with the club, he has forged a friendship with former NASCAR Cup Series racer Carl Edwards. Lee recently joined ROAR for a Q&A. ▶ HAVE YOU BEEN A FAN OF NASCAR FOR YOUR ENTIRE LIFE? “I’m 62, and I remember going to the Atlanta 500 with my father and grandfather. That’s when Cale Yarborough and Richard Petty were racing. I didn’t follow it very closely. Here and there, I’d watch on Sunday. About 2008, I started watching again.” ▶ WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE DRIVER? “Well, back then, you were either a Ford person or a Chevy person. I was a Ford person. I got to be a Carl Edwards fan.” ▶ WHAT DID YOU LIKE ABOUT HIM? “I went to Talladega one year and camped on the infield. I had Ford Excursion decals made. One afternoon, Carl and his wife came by in a golf cart. He had been playing tennis and stopped to say hello. I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, my favorite driver just stopped and talked to me.’” ▶ DID YOU REMAIN IN TOUCH? “I live in North Georgia, so I started going to Talladega twice a year, Bristol twice, Charlotte, Atlanta. After the first time I met Carl, I went to the Charlotte Hall of Fame with my wife and grandson. I had a piece of metal for him to sign, and he actually remembered me from the last race.” ▶ WHAT EXPERIENCES HAVE YOU GAINED FROM YOUR ONMC MEMBERSHIP? “When I joined, they did a lot of garage tours. I actually saw Carl a few more times. He’d recognize me and always was very friendly. 0 2 4

J
oseph Pugh, graphic designer for RCR Graphics and RCR Enterprises, saw his first NASCAR race at one of North Carolina’s most famous short tracks near Asheboro, N.C. “That was at Carraway Speedway,” Pugh said. “That’s going back in time so I would say the late 1980s. I went there with my Dad, Tony Pugh. I was always an Earnhardt fan and that was what our family was raised on.” Pugh received an associate’s degree in Graphic Design at Randolph Community College in Randolph County, N.C., in May of 2005 and began working with a screen printing company. Simply by chance, he met Kenneth Ward of RCR Graphics and was told of an opening. Pugh accepted the position four years ago in 2017. “I’ve really been drawn to sport my whole life, but really, sports in general,” Pugh said. “It’s kind of been a dream of mine to work with a professional sports team. So it’s been a cool experience.” Pugh is partially responsible for designing scheme wraps for the organization’s Cup Series and Xfinity Series cars. He also provides a variety of graphic services to companies outside of racing. “I do a lot of work for outside vendors that come to RCR Graphics,” Pugh said. “I also do a lot of in house designs for our pit crews and do work with the haulers and work on layouts for them. “Basically we start out with whomever the sponsor is and kind of get what their feel is and their layout ideas” Pugh said. “We sent them a few designs and get the ball rolling and then we hone in on that and take it to the next level when we get it produced.”

tock car racing legend Buddy Baker spent his entire life involved around NASCAR’s premier series circuit. It all began when his father, NASCAR champion Buck Baker, began his driving career in 1949 when Buddy was only 8 years old. By 1959, Baker slipped into one of his father’s Oldsmobiles and began fantasizing about winning races of his own. For 25 years, he drove Dodges and Fords owned by others and enjoyed 19 career

victories and 38 pole positions. Another milestone came on March 24, 1970, when he set a world closed-course record lap of 200.447 miles per hour, becoming the first race driver to exceed 200 mph on a closed course. The 6-foot-5 “Gentle Giant” was a crowd pleaser that kept his team colors up front. Baker won on the fastest tracks, Daytona and Talladega, with regularity. He won the Winston 500 there in 1975, 1976 and 1980, and the Talladega 500 in
1975. At Daytona, he won the Daytona 500 in 1980, and the Firecracker 400 in 1983. Before each race, he was known to pace back and forth while waiting for races to begin. Once in the car, the bundle of nerves would settle and he would keep his cars up front. Baker drove for top team owners, such as Cotton Owens, Nord Nord Krauskopf, Harry Ranier, the Wood Brothers, among others. When he parted ways with Glen Wood at the end of the 1984 Winston Cup season, there were few rides to be had. It was time to try something he had wanted to do throughout his career. Baker and business entrepreneur Danny Schiff joined forces to create Baker-Schiff Racing in 1985. They built their shop in Kannapolis, N.C., and began fielding Oldsmobiles, just as Baker had done in 1959. He and Schiff even used the old family No. 88 on the door panels and roofs in familiar fashion. It was almost like old times, but with a much bigger fan following that
measured in the millions. “I looked around and asked myself, ‘What can an owner do for me that I can’t do for myself?’” Baker said in an article in the Morning Call newspaper of Lehigh Valley, Pa., on June 7, 1985. “…When you do something for a long time, it becomes more than just what you do, it becomes a way of life. I’ve been in racing my entire adult life. What was I gonna do? Just retire? And then do what?” The Baker-Schiff team entered 124 Cup Series races through the 1989 season with 12 top-fives and 39 top-10s with Baker, Al Unser, Greg Sacks, Morgan Shepherd, Rick Mast and Jimmy Spencer behind the wheel.

MOST SUCCESSFUL DRIVER-OWNERS To be successful as a driver in NASCAR requires a lot of talent and driving ability. BY JA RED TURNER

KEVIN HARVICK
O
ne year after Kevin Harvick was tabbed by team owner Richard Childress to compete for the team that the late Dale Earnhardt had raced for in NASCAR’s top series, Harvick decided to embark on another big career move — starting his own racing team. Under the guidance of Harvick and his wife and business partner, DeLana, Kevin Harvick Inc. made its debut in 2002 in what is now the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series. Two years later, KHI joined NASCAR’s No. 3 division full time, and the company went on to record 43 truck victories and two truck championships — both with veteran Ron Hornaday Jr. From 2004-2011, KHI also had a presence in the NASCAR Xfinity Series where its drivers posted 10 wins in 367 starts. Seeking to focus primarily on his own racing interests, Harvick suspended the competition arm of KHI at the end of 2011, but not before establishing himself as one of the all-time great owners in Truck Series history.

DALE EARNHARDT SR.
I
ronically, on the day that Dale Earnhardt was tragically killed — February 18, 2001 — two cars that he owned finished 1-2 in the Daytona 500. While this will forever be remembered as both the saddest and most triumphant day in the history of Dale Earnhardt Inc., it was also the ultimate testament to what Earnhardt had managed to achieve as a team owner at a time in the sport when owning one team and driving for another — which Earnhardt did — was virtually unheard of. Even after Earnhardt’s death, the company he founded in 1980 with wife Teresa was a force for several years before eventually suspending its racing operations at the end of the 2008 season. DEI’s highlights included 24 premier series wins — including two in the Daytona 500 with Michael Waltrip — a pair of championships with Ron Hornaday Jr. in what is now the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series, and 41 victories in what is now the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

KYLE BUSCH
A
long with being arguably the purest driving talent in NASCAR today, Kyle Busch has proven to be quite the prolific team owner in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series. Just how prolific? Consider: Since Kyle Busch Motorsports — which Kyle runs in partnership with his wife, Samantha — joined the Truck Series full time in 2009, the organization has amassed a record 76 truck wins and seven owner championships on top of winning driver championships with youngsters Erik Jones (2015) and Christopher Bell (2017). KBM also owns an Xfinity Series win, having gone to Victory Lane with Kurt Busch when Kyle’s other brother made a cameo with the team. KBM made its Xfinity Series debut in 2011 with Formula One star Kimi Raikkonen and fielded a full-time Xfinity Series entry in 2012 and 2013 before opting to concentrate its efforts exclusively on the Truck Series. Given how much success KBM has enjoyed in trucks, it’s fair to say that decision has paid off.

DALE EARNHARDT JR.
O
ver a nearly two-decade career in the NASCAR Cup Series, Dale Earnhardt Jr. won 26 races and was voted the sport’s most popular driver a record 15 consecutive years. But Earnhardt Jr.’s most lasting legacy might be his accomplishments as a team owner — primarily in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Although Earnhardt Jr.’s race team — appropriately named JR Motorsports — has also fielded successful truck and Late Model entries, it’s in NASCAR’s No. 2 division that JRM has been the most impactful. Under Earnhardt Jr.’s leadership, the company has captured three Xfinity Series championships with drivers Chase Elliott (2014), William Byron (2017) and Tyler Reddick (2018), respectively. In 2017, JRM became the first Xfinity Series organization to make it a clean sweep of the top three positions in the final standings. Now in its 19th year of existence, JRM campaigns four full-time Xfinity Series teams and operates out of a 66,000-square-foot facility in Mooresville, North Carolina.

TONY STEWART

n 2009, Tony Stewart made the bold and seemingly questionable move of leaving a top-tier ride at Joe Gibbs Racing in favor of assuming a driving role and part ownership of the organization that would become known as Stewart-Haas Racing. Many people thought Stewart was crazy, since abandoning JGR meant giving up his ride with the organization where he began his NASCAR Cup Series career a decade earlier and had won two championships along with more than 30 races. Stewart, though, has proved his doubters wrong. Along with winning a championship and 16 races over eight seasons as an owner/driver for SHR, the three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion driver has cemented his place as one of the elite car owners in the sport. Although Stewart called it quits from driving at the end of 2016, SHR has remained strong under his leadership and continues to flourish and contend for championships year in and year out.

The patriarch of the Petty racing family first used No. 42 during the third series race on Aug. 7, 1949, at Occoneechee Speedway in Hillsborough, North Carolina. In addition, Petty’s sons, Richard (28 starts and 2 wins) and Maurice (11 starts), also used the number on occasion during their driving careers, and his grandson, Kyle, won six times during 286 starts with the number. Overall statistics show that cars carrying No. 42 in the NASCAR Cup Series have recorded 75 victories with 703 top-10 finishes in 1,580 starts. Businessman Felix Sabates debuted as a team owner in 1989 with Kyle Petty driving the team’s No. 42 Pontiac. Sabates partnered with Chip Ganassi in 2001 and Chip Ganassi Racing continues to field car No. 42 with Kyle Larson behind the wheel. In addition to the Pettys, the list of drivers to win with No. 42 includes Larson (6), Juan Pablo Montoya (2), Joe Nemechek (1), Jim Paschal (4) and Marvin Panch (1). Country music singing legend Marty Robbins also used the number in 25 starts during the 1970s.

▶ WHAT WAS THE START OF THE SEASON LIKE FOR YOU? “The first few weeks were a little nerve-wracking because we were hoping for a strong start to the season, which is what we had, working to show off our preparations from the winter. We were still in the middle of moving into the shop that we’re in currently. We were much more prepared this year, and the results showed.”
•
▶ WHAT HAVE YOU IMPROVED UPON AS A DRIVER? “A lot of it is familiarity with the racetracks we’re going to. I have notes to look at and it’s not the first time I’m showing up at these tracks, which is really nice. I’m confident in the team and the garage. Having Doug Randolph on the pit box is an added confidence piece because he has experience coaching our team along the way. He allows me to improve myself overall.” ▶ YOU MENTIONED DOUG RANDOLPH IS SOMEONE WHO HAS WORKED WITH VETERANS AND CHAMPIONS. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO WORK WITH HIM? “It adds a lot of confidence to our program. I can focus on doing my job and I don’t have to worry about everything else. You can see it in our guys. We’re a lot more coordinated. He’s the overall leader that our team needed. He’s worked with the top equipment and knows where it needs to be. He points us in the right direction.”

here’s been no shortage of action and intrigue in the opening four rounds of the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series, but even the most experienced of the virtual competitors expect it all to turn up a notch with Sunday’s GEICO 70 at virtual Talladega Superspeedway (1 p.m. ET on FOX where available, FS1 and the FOX Sports App). Fourteen former Talladega winners are entered this week as the sport continues to compete virtually and offer fans a racing retreat of sorts as the country deals with the COVID-19 pandemic. The entry list for this week’s highly-anticipated virtual Talladega stop includes one of the track’s all-time best – and easily most popular – in six-time NASCAR Cup Series Talladega winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. And for the first time in the eNASCAR

iRacing Pro Invitational Series’ brief history, another six-time Talladega winner, NASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon, is coming out of the FOX television broadcast booth to test his own virtual Talladega grit competing against this talented entry list. “Man, I’m going to give it a try,” Gordon said Wednesday revealing his big news while doing a FOX Sports iRacing broadcast. “We’ve been trying to get me behind the wheel of one of these sim rigs and I’m coming out of retirement, boys!” This week’s grid will include former Talladega winners like Gordon’s fellow NASCAR Hall of Famer, Bobby Labonte, the 2000 NASCAR Cup Series champion who won a NASCAR Cup Series race at the big track in 1998 and then scored back-to-back IROC (International Race of
ENASCAR PRO INVITATIONAL Champions) wins in 2000-2001. Brad Keselowski, the 2012 NASCAR Cup Series champion, is right on Gordon and Earnhardt’s heels with five real-time victories at Talladega, earning his very first NASCAR Cup Series trophy with the win in the 2009 spring race at the track. His Team Penske teammate Joey Logano has three wins at Talladega and their teammate Ryan Blaney is the most recent winner, taking the 2019 Playoff race win there. Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson and popular driver/ eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational in-race analyst Clint Bowyer both own a pair of Talladega trophies. The last three races at the track have crowned first-time Talladega winners - Almirola (2018) and Elliott and Blaney in 2019. When it comes to the virtual world, however, the task is absolutely to find a way to disrupt the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational dominance of 22-year old William Byron. The current driver of Gordon’s former No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet has won the last two races and led more laps (319) than any other driver.
